For those who have somehow missed the 8 excellent challenges run so far (where have you been? Under a rock? ), this is a monthly competition open to all painters, whether you've won a Golden Demon or simply painted a Demon gold! At the end of each month, the entries are collected into a final showcase, in which the whole of Dakka can vote for their favourite entries, not just the best painted but also the coolest, most ambitious, funniest or simply the one you like the most! There is an ongoing League that these results contribute towards, which will run for 12 months before starting over in March next year.
The theme for this month's challenge is: Princes of the Universe
This theme can be interpreted however you like, but here are some examples:
- A model that is more powerful in some way, be that physically or through other means, than his regular compatriots
- A model of significant rank or position in its faction's hierarchy
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month Following the vote, points will be awarded for the following:
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
The League
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st November and will end at midnight GMT on the 30th November. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

“Not much is known about the mysterious psyker in blue astartes power amour known as Ignis. He always seems to appear when a situation become the most dire, only to disappear as quickly as he had appeared. Some say that he is the last survivor of his chapter yet he carries no known chapter markings, others think that he is just a psychic apparition. One thing is certain, he has never turned against imperial forces instead striking down their enemies with burst of white hot flame. Several reports have declared him dead, caught in the middle of an explosion or ripped apart by bolter shells, yet he seems return every time. Those who came close enough to the mysterious figure have heard him saying things like ‘fire is the beginning and the end’ and ‘burn heretics and be cleansed by fire’, leaving many to suggest he has an obsession with fire.”

I am in yet again Para, will get a proof up later today and edit it into this post.
EDIT: Proof pic:
Also a new challenge means a new banner link, so I thought I should post this here with a new link to this months challenge:
This banner is free for anyone to use, you may host it yourself or you can use the links below:
[IMG]http://i57.tinypic.com/6xwaw9.jpg[/IMG.] Just remove the last . from inside the /IMG brackets and paste it into the signiture box on your Dakka profile.
If you want it to be clickable and direct people to the thread, copy and paste this:
I'm usually not the kind of person that delves into the depths of fanboyism, but I've been watching too much dark souls on youtube and after playing a bit with some Perry WotR knights and some greenstuff I came up with this, Peeve "the parry king" Peeverson and Oroborotheninja, who mayor not be the masters of the universe but they are certainly above average when it comes to DkS PvP.
Count me in, I may change my mind but I think I want to go with the following. They're primed grey and a couple have a little extra color. I will be painting over those that do, the black was a failed color scheme. If you need an updated proof photo let me know.
I'll go in. Going to do a 54mm Eisenhorn that I picked up a while back.
Couple of proof photos. The image I have his just after I based him, I am trying to get another one of his current state (primed), but I am having no such luck. I'll edit with a new one shortly.
All of the epic is influencing me too. I mean the space/future barbarians kind of say He-Man to me which fits the title to a T imo... but I do have some over the top boss-captain-leaders I could dig up too..
I'm stuck between:
Forgeworld Keeper of Secrets (very unlikely to finish)
Magma Dragon in scenic lava base (more likely, need to find some cork)
Commissar Yorkie's blinged up tank (complete with rhinestones) - very unlikely to get any votes from people who like serious 40K Fulgrim (Kabuki)
Straight painted Commissar Cadet squad, led by senior commissar (I'd tilt shift blur out the rest of the squad and focus on 4)
I'd say Para and I should do a Primarch-off, but regardless of painting talent, *nobody* likes Fulgrim, and I don't think everyone is impartial in that respect.
I very nearly bought the green of the model when I made a large sake, it's an absolute gem.
(I'm not remotely flush, I put the money into a load of useful stuff to kill the urge)
The goth in me says Morty.
The sadist in me says all three.
(Hey, I am doing Slaanesh!)
If, and it's a massive if, I got that far, would two renditions of Fullers pass? A before HH (Kabuki) and after (FW, he's totally lost his beans in that rendition).
Automatically Appended Next Post: That was supposed to be phrased as a question, I'm working on 90mins sleep across three days. :x
Para, some of the proof pic's that are spoilered aren't showing up.
And buttery you better do that damn dragon! With the scales we talked about too Oh, and nice to see some kataphrons Jan!
I've ordered some bitz for a epic titan for my Sons of Malice. Seeing as it's the size of a terminator, I think I'll get it done, so he may be entered. Although I didn't even finish the skulltaker in one month.................
@BC: If you think you can do 2 Primarchs in a month, go for it!
I think Morty would be a nice opposite for Fulgrim, and given our respective painting styles fits rather well; you can do the shiny one (DO NOT put rhinestones on a Primarch! ) and I can cover mine in eleven different kinds of grime!
LeCacty wrote:Para, some of the proof pic's that are spoilered aren't showing up.

I'm afraid I have to get through this by the 5th of Dec. I can't rush a dragon, and I'd rather do it shortly after.
Only the central white infantry and two green rows are painted to TTS so far.
Paradigm wrote:@BC: If you think you can do 2 Primarchs in a month, go for it!

I couldn't do the scenic base (mostly because I don't even slightly understand how it goes together) but I could probably do whirlwind Fulgrim.
I thought that Morty's colours did lend themselves to your work, or perhaps Vulkan, but i don't know very much about him, and i can't see greens. ...But what am I supposed to do with my 1mm rhinestones? I may find a way to incorporate them on the base. Give the broken statue a necklace.
So it's a 3-way Primarch duel? I almost feel that deserves its own spin-off thread...
Paradigm Vs Buttery vs KB: Battle of the Primarchs... How about it? We set up another thread and can use it as WIP/motivation/competition/yelling-at-ourselves-to-finish-in-time thread?
I'm sure there would still be plenty posted here, I simply suggested it as a) there will hopefully be many, many WIPs between the three given the amount of work this kind of model needs, and b) where else can you see 3 Primarchs being worked on in one place?
Guess BC has the casting vote, fill this thread with Primarchy progress or' take it outside' to a Primarch-duelling thread?
Hm, guys, should I enter
1), an Ork playing QUeen? (GOOOOOOORK! Juz killed an 'umie! Put mah slugga against 'is 'ead! DAKKADAKKA! Now 'es dead...)
2), A Grot who dreams of becoming something bigger
or 3), Something else?
I can't decide! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Hold on a minute, the HH box is coming out soon...

I can vote for BC, I have Trevor held hostage so can pretty much do whatever I want.
Are you sure Trevor is the hostage there, after the trouble he's given you?
(I feel Trevor has featured in so many threads in this forum that's he's basically become the unofficial mascot for Dakka's painters... A symbol that we shall never give up, never give in, no matter how much superglue, putty, tape and probably even welding at some point are required to keep a model intact! )
I did actually consider soldering him at one point. We are bound to each other now, I am actually going to buy my own Trevor model after this one is done as a constant reminder of how much I hate myself.

Sorry for the slight OT, but I have to ask having seen the comments in the 'Borrow your model' thread, what exactly is Trevor? (Aside from an abyss of hate and dispair).
Trevor weighs roughly the same as a lead tennis ball, and the reaction I got upon unearthing him for that thread was "Jests Christ, that thing again."
I got him (painted) second hand from a teenager, who judging from the sale price wasn't the first owner (roughly £5), so the extend of his misery is both international, and impossible to track.
His original base was a solid metal square slotta bevel led thing that weighed as much as his unattached wing.
How's "Second Chancers" as a theme?
And honestly I'll either go all out and freehand Fullers, or not do anything, so it's good that KB threw his hat in.
Hahahaha, if December is Second Chancers, hopefully the modelling part is completed by then (need to get his tail on, and the wings pinned (but not joined) - I will totally have him done over that stretch, but I was hoping to have it done by Xmas (not likely, sorry BC). This is doubly disappointing as looking at the old thread I can see you raised the point of "what happens if the new recipient meets the same fate and it becomes a forever project" - TREVOR WILL BE FINISHED.
I will clean my desk and take some photos this weekend, Trev's base is mostly done, and once I get his bum back together he can get his first coat of paint.
Dual option proof.
I hope that as the tape on Phoenix Knight is intact you'll trust me without opening it. I don't really want to until I have a tray to do that.
Like some of the others have done on this thread, I will ask you guys: which of the following models would you like to see me put some paint on: Option 1: Finecast Tau Commander Option 2: Old metal Chaos Lord on Juggernaut Option 3: Bloodthirster of Insensate Rage I feel like the Chaos Lord would be the easiest, and the Bloodthirster would definitely be the hardest (that is a lot of detail on that model ), but the Tau would be challenging as well, as I have never painted a Tau battlesuit of any kind. I already have a basic paint scheme in mind for all three, I just can't decide which one I should do.
Need to see how this month goes with RL. Hopefully will be able to enter otherwise it will be three months in a row I haven't completed an entry
If a higher rank counts I would have more options and would probably go with Anrakyr the Traveller to lead the slowly growing Necron force I seem to be accumulating. Or expand my Tau to include a Finecast Commander to represent one of Farsight's Eight (ninja' by Zerg ). I'll wait to post a proof when I know how likely I am to complete.

I vote for the Tau. I like Tau and they just got their new codex. The old Commander is a good looking model and will be a good challenge.
As for me, this month my Princess of the Universe is going to be EHaley. Proof pic will be added when I get home from work in the morning.

Older ones used to be cast in White metal, whilst the newer ones, and some newer runs are being done in resin.
ok i have two blisters i wanna paint that might fit this
i will only have time this month for one i have a witch hunter inquisitor (GW), and major prime victoria harlee (PP)

Well, I'm painting Epic Haley so it could be interesting to see Epic Haley vs Prime Haley from two different painters.
Thraxas Of Turai wrote: What material are the Kabuki Primarch's (or as they are so cheap maybe Primark's ?) made from? Some look like metal and others resin.
Fulgrim is metal with a resin base.
The picture on the packet is of his green sculpt.
Don't have a Primarch, but will throw my hat into the Heracy ring with 1st Captain Typhon.
(3rd edit, oh for crying out loud, even when I flip the image it comes out upside down!)
Okay, thanks to a suggestion by Ruberu I will indeed be doing my Tau Shas'O. I think he fits the bill quite nicely as a leader-type person. Here is the proof pic:
As the proof shows, there will be some Space Marine debris on his base. It will look better once I add some texture paint to it (the marine stuff will look half-buried then). I will probably make it look like the unfortunate marine was one of the Raven Guard chapter (because of Kau'yon), although I will not be doing Vior'la sept for the Commander himself (he's getting my own special color scheme). The reason the missile pods at the bottom of the pic are already primed is because I took those off of a couple of other Crisis suits and did not want to prime them again when I do the Commander (that might mess up the little details). They will ultimately go on the arms.
Looking forward to seeing the battle of the Primarchs and other FW models, I think we should get some sort of sponsorship deal out of this.
Because of this challenge I actually sat down and watched the highlander movie, terrible acting but great storyline so quite enjoyed it and I'm using that as my inspiration (also Para said he'd dock me points if I didn't do it )
So as a small update, the base of a Plasticard Katana, need to do the detail on the grip. Sadly I'm not a ancient Japanese master sword smith so it hasn't been folded 200 times, only carved with a Stanley knife.

Damn right I would! You've got a reputation to uphold now... So next month we're expecting Boss Krissmass with a Santa Klaw!
Highlander is just so very 80s in all the wrong ways and all the right ones! Acting's wooden as a plank for the most part but the soundtrack is great, the plot is decent and there's some epic (if completely over the top and unrealistic) sword fights! Just don't watch the sequels...
Right now, my plan is to have an Ork playing Queen with a crowd of Gretchin. Yes... The guitar will be plasticard with greenstuff, I guess I'll use the wired my brothers use for soldering ss guitar strings. The base model is a Burna. Mad max? Yep I can upload a proof pic of the Ork tomorrow and the Gretchin in maybe a week. Looking forward to this!
I like that one too LordRahl. It just wasn't out yet when I started my Cygnar army. After I finish what I have I will probably pick her up, then I will have all the Haleys.
I've dug out this Robot Griddlepan model, it has made it onto the train this morning for some serious cleanup - he has unfortunately suffered some damage due to the previous owner not really understanding that all of the epoxy adhesive in the world isn't necessary.
I got him all apart, but some detail has been wrecked, smoothing it out and will try to freehand on it or something.
Base is not in terrible condition, but also needs some greenstuffing.
Ok, out of the hospital and back into the paint! This here will be the head honcho of my army, so will be awesome. If the model is too far along, I suppose I can think of something else.(please let me do it!)
Hmm forget the barbarians. Now I'm torn between trying to do khanjira though that's a bit daunting, or maybe having dino king Blaine squaring off with my converted foot-archaeon skull lord dude.
Not sure the kids will let me get anything done though.

Correction- Christopher Lambert's acting is wooden lol. Terrible, terrible decision to cast a Frenchman as a Scot lol.

Winter months. Go simple, get it done. Trust me. You don't wanna rush big projects, and you will likely end up having to, or dropping it, which would be a shame.
I'm doing one figure with another maaaaybe appearing alongside.
Thought Id finally get involved, I follow month after month and I just gotta man up and submit. Last months challenge had some very impressive stuff good job to everyone who was involved. couple names I want to mention for last weeks challenge.
Red thirst, your blood angels are really coming along keep up the good work, inch by inch its a sinch.
Inspector, love the diorama and your creativity.
Albnioork, Amazing nurgle daemon prince conversion not to mention the paint job, loved the vibrant colours together.
Januine, You just blow my mind month after month with your witty dioramas and stunning paint jobs, your work is just incredible and inspirational good job.
Paradigm, first off thanks for making all this happen. Joker is by far my most favourite bad guy and the paint job was spot on.
Midget Gems, Trick or treak? you fuckin nailed it my friend Love the ork2-d2 and Yodork.
October month was a tough vote for me there were many other impressive entries, big ups to everyone who submitted and I cant wait to see what you guys come up with this month.
Cheers Redflex - realluy kind words most gratefully received Cracking choice for your entry - absolutely love all the Dark Vengeance figs (well.....with the exception of the librarian - he can just sod off!) but the chaos ones are really top banana! Good luck
Buttery Commissar wrote: Get the resin version, Trev weighs an obscene amount and actually hurts if you drop him on you.
His is a strange legacy.
When you see the crazed gleam of insanity in they eyes of the grey-bearded grognards, just remember that we used to assemble large, poorly cast, fully metal models. The scars are not all from hobby knives, and not all are visible.
I must warn you both, you are talking to the person that found out about the horrors of the old heavy/poorly designed slann mage priest, then went and brought a used one. I prefer metal, the more the better!
But yes, the metal is misshapen and simply doesn't fit together - add that to the fact there are no flat surfaces and it weighs a ton, glueing it together is nigh on impossible.
Question can I join?.... I have a Thanqoul model I bought and assembled when it came out but haven't painted since really. I just have the first coat done on the skin and some of the silver bits, would that count as proof?
If not I'll find another model, just thought this might be fun
Making some slow progress. More pictures can be found in my Captain, My Captain thread if interested.
Ended up going with a different head on my Librarian than the one depicted in my proof picture. I want to use that one for a different model I've got in mind.
Just thought I'd pop in and show forward progress on this month's entry. Take it easy for now.

Hello and Welcome Redflex, yeah it is a big step but I found it quite fun now and all the people here are very supportive which really helps
Thanks a lot of your comments. they are very much appreciated.
Never really remember the sizes. The smallest magnet (3mm maybe) is in the bottom of the servitor 's cabling. Then bigger ones (7mm ish) are in the bucket part of the front of the Kat where the servitor goes and another 7mm at the back for the platform to attach to. U can see examples of the 2 sizes I used blu-tacked to the wooden block

Cheers. I'm always surprised by how teeny the magnets can be!
I tend to over compensate to avoid losing the pieces. My plastic tank commander is fitted with a 5mm I think. I'm a very clumsy player.
getting magnets over here is a nightmare. The 3mm ones I bought last time I was home in Ireland. Think I got 50 or so. All the bigger ones I end up having to dig out of cutesy fridge and stationary store office clips etc over here. Cannot for love, money nor the flail get a bag of neo-d hobby magnets over here.
I'll send you a pack or so with the Tanith, if you have a versatile size you prefer. Just waiting on them to be at the same end of the country at once. I've got Larks, but the trooper is in Lancashire-
[Very slow realisation] I have a box of 70 unpainted troopers, I don't need to wait for that particular one. Oh my god, I am a goon of the highest order.
hahahahaaa!! I spent 10 minutes searching my workspace for my size 1 brush.......fething thing was being held in my mouth. Not a one off experience -_-
5-7mm are my usual go to size. I've only got 1 left. need ot buy more butterfly/heart etc magnet clips again
My mouse for the main computer is a pen tablet, so I know your pain. If you can lose a biro inside ten minutes, imagine doing that with your mouse repeatedly.
Cheers LordRahl. He's the lead Kat - hence the conversion. He's got two buddies that'll get painte together after the main guy's scheme is finished and figured.
Is that a guitar, or is he happy to see me? Sorry I couldn't resist. You might want to paint that soon so it doesn't look so much like what it looks like now...
On a serious note, he'll be pretty cool when he's done, and you should go with some grots to be the crowd or something.
Another wee WiP - First Kat's primary paintjob is done. Lenses, weathering et al will all get done at the end when the other two Kats are up to the same stage.
Looks like we've got ourselves some pretty cool leaders to paint! I really need to start on my Tau Shas'O-I've started on a different battlesuit to test out my color scheme-no pics yet as I'm barely started, but I hope to at least get some pics up in my blog soon.
Speaking of the end of the year, I think I've mentioned this once or twice elsewhere, but for next month's round, my plan was to have an Open Challenge. Normal rules on Proofs and model limits and such would still apply, but there would be no 'theme' as such. Thought that might a) allow people to be very creative and not feel like they're 'pushing' the limits of a theme, b) give people a chance to really show off what they can do on whatever mini or minis they choose.
If no one has any massive objections, that's where I think we ought to go next month. Normal, theme-led challenges would resume in the new year.
Rather then a fully open theme, maybe let people pick one of the non-winning topics from the past year and work with that. Given the number, we all should be able to find something in there that works.
But how well an entry sticks to the theme is a major part of my voting process. If we remove that, I’d want some of the painters here to paint left handed. Just to keep things fair. Or right handed, if they are a fellow southpaw. And Januine should only have 24 hours to work, and should either be intoxicated the whole time, or paint with his teeth.

The problem with that is that it would then become a complete admin headache, trying to keep track of which entry is based on which theme and at that point it's basically an open contest anyway, as each person is working towards their own 'theme' anyway. If you like, the 'theme' of an open challenge is the mini itself, and 'sticking' to that theme comes in choosing the right tone/palette/techniques for the model in question.
I won't call it either way yet until I've got a better sample of who likes/doesn't like the idea. Totally in favour of insisting that Januine has to paint with one hand behind his back, while hanging upside down over a pit of snakes and blindfolded for good measure,,, and he'd still put us to shame more than likely!
Oi!!!! What's this??? Paint with my teeth?? I end up with paint in my mouth enough as it is (really need to stop licking the brushes - bloody Ben Komets >< !!!!! Snakes??!!!! Yuuummmuy
I'm half Irish half German, living in a convict colony - I can make fun of everyone for alcoholism
Back on topic, I haven't been able to do anything on this over the weekend like I had planned, but AS JANUINE AS MY WITNESS I will do something tonight on it (hopefully)
How about for every month won, a painter has to drink a beer before starting painting? I'd be screwed as I'm teetotal, but it's give everyone else a flying chance against Jan.
I'm really not feeling it with Fullers. His detail is hella shallow. I'll try, but I'm not thrilled.
I'm in; Freeboota Kaptin, da' real Princes of da 40K 'ooniverse. (I just hope I can finish on time; I haven't even taken off the mold lines and we're hosting Thanksgiving dinner!)
Hello guys, I found some time to glue some minis together.
This is my entry:
Two Kommandoz, Dak and Dakka who physically aren´t bigger than the other orks, Nobs, Bosses etc. but their mind makes them that tough that they are kind of princess in their universe!
That's pretty sweet. Given the colors, I must surmise that either his cape is made out of wind, or he's about to have the most epic trip-on-cape ever. Pretty cool either way

Haha, thank you. With the way that cape is flowing she is either about to unleash unholy hell comparable only to the lost ark that Indiana Jones survived, or it is going to be the most epic trip-on-cape face plant into the pit of doom to the likes of whom the world has never seen.
This is the very first time I'm participating in this. There is no grand-epicness, but here is the background of this guy. He is Sarge Nosebreaker, because when he was 13 he smashed a Heretic in the nose for insulting the Emperor.

Love those conversions mate! Very characterful, especially that mean-looking shoota. Looking forward to seeing some paint on 'em!
Going back a bit..... On themes for next month and drinking.... My local GW ran a drunken painting competition. Not that you actually had to drink and paint, that's always a good plan, but the theme was you had to paint a mini in totally outlandish and inappropriate ways. It was a really good laugh and really inventive.

I don't have anything particularly prince-ish to enter. So I figured I might try my hand at something combining NMM and OSL, with such a small and relatively simple thing to paint I should have time to mess around and make mistakes.
Besides what better thing to try them on than that prince of breakfast appliances the toaster.
Unfortunately, I don't think I am going to be able to have time to get through finishing Eisenhorn. Sadly, I have had a bunch of stuff come up with my grad program that I need to do.
With that said, if I can I'd like to swap to a smaller mini, because I should be able to finish that in time.
I'd like to swap to Njal Stormcaller in his Terminator Armour.
Work is continuing, here are a couple of more WIP shots of the Librarian:
Work has started on the right arm and Force Staff, as well as the right shoulder pad. Once they're finished up and attached I will begin work on the jump pack & get it attached to complete the mini.
Great work to everyone else participating. Redflex, those cultists look awesome! Good to see the Bone Legion still growing.
model is looking great the paint job is juat so Hella clean, good job. looks like you blood angel revamp is coming along.
Thanks Redflex, I appreciate that. I'm really pushing myself to make sure I hit as many details as I can as cleanly as I can. Hopefully I can do the Sons of Sanguinius justice properly That's my goal, anyway.
Your Bone Legion is shaping up to be awesome to behold. I can't wait to see these cultists finished up and see what your next addition will be.
Take it easy for now and good luck in the painting competition here also. Chat at ya later.
@Kustomer D - thanks so much for such a great compliement - really means a lot looking forward to seing these orks you're paintinfg. I need to have another bash at some orks some time. Lot of fun to paint those nutters!
Thanks for your kind words kustomer D, Cant wait to see how your orks turn out. I Havnt painted a ork before but im waiting for one to be sent to me from "the real ork MOB' topic. that should be awesome once all the models come together!
@ Januine: I would love to see an Ork painted by you. That would be great. Otherwise, after I saw an Ork painted by you, I guess I couldn´t paint Orks anymore due to the quality of your work ...
@Midget: Yes, sir. I had a few Boyz ready for painting but I didn´t like their "usual" looks. So I took my bitzbox and cut them into pieces, added the one or the other bitz and that´s what turned out.
They might work as a Kommando-squad ...
@Redflex: Orks are fun! You can do a lot of stuff and be very creative. Orks are very forgiving ...
@Kustomer D: Nice conversions as ever! Look forward to seeing paint hit plastic!
As for myself, I somehow managed to get Morty finished up today! Must have gain an extra hour or two this afternoon, or just completely lost track of time...
As these aren't final pics I'll just put the one here for now, you can see the rest in my blog or the Primarchs of the Universe thread. Any thoughts welcome.
Alpha looks badass, Jan. If the Kats end up looking this good, the rest of us might as well just play for 2nd. As for my entry, I still haven't really started other than hitting the armor with one coat of blue. It needs another coat of that, then some details. I have done some work on another battlesuit as a test of the color scheme; see my blog for a pic!
Left to do: Paint the jump pack (which I just spraypainted black while waiting on the pictures to upload/process) and then attach it. I'm in the home stretch now.
Look forward to final updates tomorrow evening once I get home. Thanks for looking, and take it easy.
Januine wrote: Crikey - I'm slow as hell! Para now - that boy has got the speedy gonzalez touch!
The difference being that your WIPs usually look better than my finished minis!
One trick I have found to help speed things up is to use a hair dryer (on low heat/power) to speed up the drying of washes. You need to be careful there's no pooling, but being able to dry a wash in a few seconds rather than half an hour or so is handy.
Niiiicceee!!! They're looking great. Your weathered painted plates ( the yellow and red) have come out brilliantly. Lovely touch having the guy reloading. Very nicely done indeed!
Technically that's two colours, one more than is allowed for Proofs, but since you can't possibly have been working on that prior to the competition (which is what the proof is meant to prove), yeah, you're in! I'm not going to be an ass about it!
No issues there, that was not a "get my excuses in early" post just a little reminder to myself. I have also told the better half to hide my Calth box set until the Celestant is painted up.

Oh, snap! Sorry :(
I was actually so excited yesterday that I started on that guy right away and didn't stop to snap a photo til I got a basecoat down, LOL. Thanks for letting me use him anyhow
Finished up the Librarian tonight. Very happy with the Librarian, and I hope you guys like the finished product. Without further ado.
Brother Epistolary Lexon, attached to the Blood Angels Vth Battle Company.
Very happy with this mini, despite the few bobbles here or there, specifically the right chest section of the torso, but overall it looks good and I'm going to run with it. I hope folks like the finished product.
Take it easy everyone.
-Red__Thirst-
Edit: Added another picture showing the Psychic Hood
Thank you both! I really enjoyed painting this mini up, and look forward to getting some solid use out of it in the future along side my Captain and Command Squad.
@Red__Thirst - Sweet! that's really nice -- awesome that you got the greaved shoulder pads to fit under the jump pack too. That can be tricky... I've had the whole model done, and then had a DOH moment, when the jump pack bumped into the shoulders
Incidentally, the shoulderpads you picked are a couple of my favorite ones.
For my own, I'm done, too, I think. I may ding him up a bit later on, but I doubt it... there's so much more I want to paint that going back to improve a finished model is a path of good intentions that usually leads nowhere

As I said in my reply over in the P&M Showcase forum, that dreadnought is amazingly well done. Hopefully if and when I get my hands on one, it'll look that good. Great work!
And thank you for the kind words. I've learned the hard way to dry-fit everything on a model before you even base coat, and I usually use the dry fit to fully build out (with blu-tack) the mini and determine the model's pose, etc after I get done scraping mold lines and cleaning the mini in prep for basecoating. This lesson was learned the hard way, with a D'HO! moment of my own, but thankfully the model still worked despite the slight hiccup.
Yea, I had initially planned on the Greaved shoulderpad I used on my Librarian above to be used on my Captain, but his helmet crest got in the way during test-fitting and I was able to save it for this model.
Glad to see one other Blood Angel represented in this little contest. Best of luck to you and I imagine your Contemptor is going to get quite a number of votes! I know I plan on voting for it at least.
Take it easy for now and great work once again. Catch ya later.
@Red__Thirst - Thanks again! And yeah, I know I should dry fit everything, but I get cocky with stuff I've done a lot of, so a little variation.. surely it will work right? And that's when I get those DOH moments, hehehe It's made worse, too, as I tend to paint stuff in subassemblies. So when I find out it didn't work, it's when I'm putting finished or nearly-finished subassemblies together
@Paradigm - I made a few simple cuts to give him less of a "golem" look. The two left leg pieces are cut at the joint to the hip, and that leg rotated backwards. I also cut the two upper and lower torso pieces at the waist, and rotated it to the right, to give it that "Slow and Purposeful" look of a big walker moving forward while rotating left and right at the waist and firing a spray of shells.
The leg is simple to separate, but a little tough to re-align to a good angle. The upper torso requires a bit of care to separate, because of the way the halves meet, but it's not hard at all with a sharp knife. When you put it back together, you need to use a little GS ball, just to give it some stability. You can see the different pieces I cut it into on my proof shot.
It's worth mentioning that the left leg comes with a slightly bent foot, and is naturally slightly angled back, but to me, it seems to be an awkward angle, because it's not quite bent enough to look moving, and not quite straight enough to look at attention.
Honestly, though, the most annoying thing about the model is that the two legs are cut right down the middle in a front-back arrangement. It's horribly visible and runs up and down the entire side on a model which has a very prominent profile. So you end up having to gap fill, file and sand *everything* right from the boot, up the side of the leg, the two big bolts, the hip pad, and then down the other side. The flat parts are easy enough, but all the little detailed parts are annoying as heck.
I almost don't wanna submit since basically everyone is doing better than I am XD
This is his current state, still needs the base done and some more detailing, but so far, I like him. I think the purple worked well. It doesn't help that I don't know how to take pictures and don't own a half decent camera
nailed it red thirst he looks top notch. good job. I sadly got no painting done last weekend, hopefully I can put some serious hours in and get some coats on my lord
Redflex wrote: nailed it red thirst he looks top notch. good job. I sadly got no painting done last weekend, hopefully I can put some serious hours in and get some coats on my lord
Here's hoping! Do post up pictures when you make forward progress!
Also, thank you for the kind words, I'm very happy with the way the mini turned out.
Thanks Zerg Smasher! LeCacty, the red is Khorne Red with a wash of Druchi Violet.
Any who, as far as I can tell, he should be done now, then again, I'll probably see a bunch of things tomorrow and continue working on them I like how the weathering turned out, but with that I could find a better way to make the necklace / Luminiferous Resonator.
So are those your final pics? I mean, you can still go back and change them after the fact if you do do some more, but you want those added to the list, yes?

Sure, Hopefully I can get a few better pics as well, but for now I'd call him ready.
Just a first impression, the cords on the front of the helmet are kinda dull in blue, as are the kneepads. I feel like if those were another color, the overall model would be much more interesting. Great work nevertheless!
Here is my finished Librarian, hope you guys like him.
I present to you,
Ignis, the mysterious librarian
And a close-up.
And lastly a bit of backstory on the guy.

Yep, to clarify, next month's challenge will be 100% open as far as minis go. All the usual rules regarding numbers of minis and Proof requirements remain, but you can enter whatever model or models you think you can do your best on!

Oh, cool! I've got a lot of Orks. Maybe I should do an ork portraying Santa?
Quick (crappy) WiP shot before I head out. Not much gonna get done today as off to Seoul to make kimchi :/ Kats are getting there - still a bit to do; detailing, highlights, weathering et al but should be finished in time.....
I was actually well ahead of schedule with this month's entry. Then photos of that new BA Chaplain surfaced and I had to create one of my own that's even better so that I wouldn't spend £20 on a single space marine figure. (fwiw I think i might actually pull it off! been press moulding bits of LotD iconography this evening).
Nice work on the flame there DaMekBoy1997, looks good.
Thought I'd post a WIP of what I've been up to, I'm quite happy with how ConnOrk Macleod is going, think I'm starting to get more confident with GS now.
Well, I've made progress on my entry, here is a quick WIP shot (excuse the poor photo quality, I was too lazy to get my good camera and just shot this one with my iPod touch): Lots of work left to do on him, but I feel like he's turning out ok. I'll need to clean up the blue armor before I do any shading (will help make the yellow freehand markings look neater). I've already tested out my edge highlight colors on a regular Crisis suit, and it looks good, so I've got a plan for this guy. Basing should be pretty simple, as well. Love what everyone else is turning out; it should be a pretty cool contest as far as final entries go!
Use a hair dryer to help the primer set quicker. So long as you have kept the spray can indoors before you spray you should be fine.
The main problem people have is that grainy texture forming, which comes from ice crystals forming from moisture in the air and on the model thanks to thermodynamics. This will be less of an issue if the air temperature is below freezing as the air holds less moisture, also helps if the model is dry too.
I recommend testing this on a peice of cardboard or sprue or whatever you don't care about first however.
Iechine wrote:I wanted to enter, but I overwrote my 'before' picture by accident. : /
Since I made the same mistake a couple of months ago when Buttery Commissar was running the challenge and was still allowed to enter, it's only fair I pass that on. So go ahead and just throw up the finished pics when it's done.
Well, then I won't get finished unless I get to my FLGS in a week.
Do you have any black paint? There's really no harm in just using that to lay down an undercoat (I've been doing it for years, I hate the texture of primer).

If that's okay with everyone, I wanted to enter Cor'bax Utterblight, Daemon Prince of the Ruinstorm (Since he is a Prince after all)
my future victoria is done just need to add the finish and put her together...
pic of her ass on my blog the icy blue was an accident while i was experimenting
Automatically Appended Next Post: omg brave little thor toaster ftw!
May end up dropping out or changing submission, nudging Fullers to Dec.
There was an accident with some Tarmac. I simply don't have time to restart him and do my army. :,(
Just the huge metal cape came off again, it was held on with epoxy, so I'll have to wedge and glue, and I only have two weeks. I may end up doing a squad of unique commissars and a female leader, as I need to do them anyway.
@BC - Yikes!! Hope it all works out bud. Tarmac > plastic :(
My guy is already done for the month, but the model I'm about to paint fits this month's theme, so I'll share some pics anyhow Not as part of the contest but just to be social If anyone is bothered by extra photospam, lemme know, and I'll refrain, hehe.
I'm sure y'all can guess where the fella comes from On a mission. Have to finish him before the BA Chaplain comes out this week, because I'll probably drop everything to work on that, lol.
@ LordRahl - nice job fella. Love the richness or her cloak - really gorgeous colour work
@Talys - you painting the chaplain up as a WB or another legion. Absolutely love his crozius. Saw it painted up in a marble effeect (think that's the official paintjob fig I'm thinking of) and looked pretty belting. looking forward to see him all Talys'd up
