Welcome to the 10th (10th! Wow, I never expected this idea to take off like it has done!) Unofficial Dakka Painting Challenge! For those who have not followed any previous challenges, this is a friendly competition for painters of all skill levels and experience, and anyone on Dakka is welcome to join in.
This month, things are a little different; as I'm sure many of you will be rather busy over the coming month, and because I wanted something a special for our final challenge of 2015, there is no theme this month! Instead, so long as it meets the rules below, you can enter any mini or minis you like! To send the year out with a bang, I encourage everyone to bring their A game here and really show off what you can do (and if you've participated in several of these challenges, how much you've improved, because every month the quality of entries seems to get higher and higher!).
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month Following the vote, points will be awarded for the following:
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st December and will end at midnight GMT on the 31st December. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
Good luck, have fun, and dare I say it, merry Christmas!

Terminator Sergeant Qaspian of the Blackened Angels
I'll enter something. I am undecided on what ( I have a few ideas, but am waiting on stuff to arrive), and whether I will have time to do it. But i'll try to commit.
Proof pics will come when I work out my entry.
Kind of planning a diorama, but not sure how many models will go on, I think it would be 6 or 7 which would break the rules.
I am also proverbially 'in', and this time, there's no waiting for models involved; all the choices I have are set out assembled on my shelf crying out 'Paint us! Have pity! It's Christmas!'
Just need to get my last essay finished up and then I'll be able to jump in, either with my last Kabuki Primarch (Lorgar), my converted BaC Contemptor or one of the characters from the same set.
I'll throw my hat in the ring, and will try to paint up a Tactical Marine Sergeant/Veteran Sergeant for my Blood Angels.
Merry Christmas indeed also!
Proof pictures will be added to this post later once I'm home and can compile the bits together, or just take pictures of the Blood Angels tactical squad sprue I've got sitting on my painting desk.
Edit: Proof Pic added! Not shown: Combi-weapon, likely to be a Combi-flamer or Combi-melta (Final choice to be determined, not sure which I'll decide to use. But all other bits are present).
Paradigm, if I need to update with another proof picture after I get the bit clipped off of the sprue for the combi-weapon, let me know.
Good luck everyone! Take it easy.
-Red__Thirst-
Edit: Changing my entry to a Death Company Marine on 12/12/2015.
I'm in. I've wanted an excuse to paint these for years and now I finally have it Will probably be like 2 weeks until I can start - so I may just have to do 1 but will try for the while squad especially if it comes early. Can't wait
Can I enter something that I finished the scenic base for about 10pm yesterday? I have pics that prove it wasn't painted before then, as I was taking step by step tutorials (mud). I've not painted or assembled the model itself.
I have to finish it by Friday either way, I just figure it's good use of a fun kit.

Go for it! It's generally the mini rather than the base that ought to be unpainted.
@.@ what do i do... i cant decide >.<
i have a set of doom blades... i just finished converting a pariah...
i just finished stripping all my Sob... i got some BA tactical marines in bits.... i have krones wife and a matching chaos lord... got some oop raptors... rippers with wings....
guess ill have to pic one after the hippy is done...
I've been looking forward to this one since I did my first challenge lol. I will be doing a Ork Santa Claws project of some sort hopefully I can get it all made and painted in time, proof to follow.
Question, If I was do make an Sleigh pulled by wolves do the wolves/reindeer count towards the model limit? I'm hoping not otherwise there won't be any helpers for Santa >_<
methebest wrote: I was wanting to make a phanta claws, but i think i'll enter my keeper of secrets to give me incentive to finish it as i need to redo it's 3rd arm.
Hey, don't feel bad. I'm entering a Santa ork diorama. Just need to take a picture of it.
@Jan: I've actually found you the entire Tanith CCS bar the un-named plasma gunner (sorry, dibsed him because he's too useful. ;P)
Gaunt, Milo, Larks, Dorden and Corbec. Milo may take the long road as he's not here, he's in Wigan.
Not my attempt to bribe you, I just found two, and then thought "well that stuffs him up if he ever wants the set" so I dug in my boxes and found the others.
Only condition is you never paint Gaunt because mine is gak and I don't need reminding. (Nah)
Back on topic: Gunner! My first time 2 part moulding anything. It came out spotless.

Sounds great Buttery - may take me a month or so to get them back to you!! Can't paint Gaunt???!!! Noooooooooo!!!!
What would a painting challenge be without some heavy metal?
Proof:
Traditional Spaced out Christmas marines. I am really looking forward to getting these fellas done!

Cheers a million mate. I actually have a wee sketch done out for the dio for that lasman we talked about. It's around ......somewhere. Based on that farmhouse siege some of the ghosts were caught up in at one point against the Pact
Bad news. I looked for the Santa Ork Diorama stuff (snowballs and cardboard painted white) and its gone. I'm guessing my parents threw it out, not knowing what it was.
Merry Christmas to all you painters! Here is my entry proof:
On the left, we have a Vindicare Assassin (in Finecast). On the right we have a Culexus Assassin (in metal). I've been thinking about painting these guys for a while now, so it's time for me to make it happen! I'd better bone up on my edge highlighting technique...
Well I got a look at my land raider I wanted to enter, as it was one of the first models I made two years ago and I have since squirreled it away, and holy crap it looks terrible. Terrible priming with lots of finger prints and parts that aren't even really primed. Should I try and salvage it, will a new coat of primer fill in the finger print marks? If not I got something else I could figure out.

Its possible to strip tanks, but you'll need patience to get the treads clean, and lots of paper towels to soak up the fluid, else it seeps out.
Priming again will just lose some detail and not cover every fingerprint.
Will be entering this month an Iron Warriors model. I hope this is enough proof?
Probably going to model and paint an Iron Warriors beserker.
Let me know if I need to give more specific proof than provided. Ive yet to enter the monthly challenge before, so I dont know if the sprues are good enough
Lol. Imperial administration would like to remind everyone that seatbelts are not just a good idea, they're the law. The emperor protects, yes, but only on a 5+....
OK, I’ve made a choice. Librarian on bike. Guy on the left here.
I’m also currently working on a farseer/warlock on a jetbike. I guess this month is all about the psycher bikers. But I like the marine better, so he gets the competition nod.
OK, this might actually help me pull my finger out and do some painting. Please see attached one Harlequin that I got for either last Christmas or my birthday at the start of March, and have thus far only assembled and primed...
JBSchroeds wrote: This is my first time entering one of these challenges. I've been working on my Firestorm Armada Battle for Valhalla starter set so I'll enter the two battleships as my entry.
Spoiler:
Proof picture. The two frigates are examples for the color scheme I'm using. A ceramic + red for the Terrans and a midnight blue + yellow for the Dindrenzi.
Dude, I can't wait to see those painted! I once considered getting into Firestorm Armada because the ships are so awesome, but my FLGS has almost no one who plays.
Out of curiosity, I noticed that I am not listed as an entrant to this contest... did my proof violate one of the rules or something Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am going to be doing something that I have not done in a long time. With the recent news that GW might be bringing back Battlefleet Gothic and the new video game that I have been following, I want to start working on my fleet again. The Gothic is painted in my old colors and will be getting repainted. If you would please accept this as a proof pic, otherwise I can post another picture after it has been stripped. The other ships are a Emperor class Battleship, x2 Lunar Cruisers and if I can find another cannon bay the last one will be a Tyrant class Cruiser. I am super excited to paint BFG again .
brushcommando wrote: Out of curiosity, I noticed that I am not listed as an entrant to this contest... did my proof violate one of the rules or something Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Same thing here, I posted a proof and I'm not in the list of entrants. I'm sure Paradigm just missed us, right?
I'm in! For me, this month's theme is "Grotz why nots?" The reasons (excuses) for keeping it simple:
1. These are the last two minis I need for a fully painted 1000 pt ork army without having to proxy anything.
2. I read somewhere in the previous competition threads that you don't want to undertake anything too ambitious during the holidays; sounds like good advice to me.
3. Maybe by setting the bar extremely low, anyone who might be on the fence about joining the competition will jump in because, surely you can paint something more exciting than a couple of lowly Grotz, right?
Lots of nice Christmas themed entries! Afraid I'll be dull and enter something I need to get done by the end of the year, was determined to get a whole army painted by the end of 2015 as I've never actually fielded an entirely painted force! So it's gonna be more Deathguard. Need to paint 5 more cataphracti, a landraider, 3 contempters, another preator and 5 grave wardens this month! So will enter the grave wardens and hope for the best, might be doomed to fail tho.
Will add a proof to this post once I get my phone working
Nah, there's no such thing as late in these challenges so long as you're in before the end of the month. There is, however, such thing as me being a total, scatterbrained, easily distracted idiot at certain times! That's me excuse and I'm sticking to it!
Well I could have entered a toaster, maybe even 2 toasters, but I'm sure some people might get a little steamy under the collar if I did, so I'm playing it safe and going for some thing a bit more subdued.
Its nice to see quite a few people that have been watching previous months are joining in this month, If your looking at the tread and wondering if you should join in, do it its great and everyone here is very friendly

An xmas toaster would be interesting The tank does look quite impressive though.
Great work BC, I do like a bit of modding to make a piece feel alive.
My proof image! Meet Froglet and his lovely ladies (who may or may not make the final Oo)
Spoiler:
(On closer inspection... one of Froglets ladies is actually a he-elf xD... and thanks to the inconsistencies of gesso Froglet himself is taking a nice bath in the stripper)
Some WIP. Got the Emperor built. Required some green stuff and some JB weld but I doubt it will fall apart anytime soon . It did not got together as well as I had hoped, lots of gaps and just poor fitting. It does look better with some paint on it though.
Hey there all, I think my DKOK will take too long too ship being around christmas time and all that - so instead I will enter this Ultramarines Command Squad (who'd have thought?!) built three of the members today, and absolutely munted my hands in the process, but i'm crazy excited to start work on these boys, and will do so after I finish my last 3 tacticals.
Some interesting WIPs so far, good to see so many entries progressing. you can enter at anytime so if you come across this thread half through the month you can still join in
Some Quick WIPs on mine, also just to point out my proof and a question are on the bottom on page 1 just in case it got missed >_<
Still have a lot of GS work to do, a base and then paint the whole thing, eek
Sure I'll bite. This will be my first time in a contest and like my 5th model posted. I'll do a modest 5 alpha legion tacticals. Bad lighting but oh well. WOW this I pad has a s y camera.

Man I love this contest. So many cool projects are coming out since there is no restriction this month! I am really excited to see some of the finished conversions and paint jobs.
Heres a WIP of my maulerfiend:
I have gotten a large majority of the skin to a nearly finished stage and now I can start moving forward with some detail work!
Ueuergh! Chief, that thing is savage! And I love it
Thanks for shouting out Nerdfests comp Para - i've entered and jumped my hobbying schedule up yet another notch :0 excited for all this hobbying thats going on.
Will not be entering this month as work will be stupidly busy but it already looks like this will be a bumper month for great entries, good luck everyone.
well, I did this today, so all-in-all, not half bad so far. I'm not done, but I'm still hunting for C&C on the scheme, as I want to use the grey and orange for my Auxilia as a whole.
I'll be changing my entry this month from a Tactical Squad Sergeant to another Death Company marine, as I REALLY need to get this squad finished, and this competition will keep me motivated with all the extra holiday stuff on-going.
Updated Proof Picture:
Thanks, sorry for the mid-stream change over. Work will be commencing soon (as in now!) as I just finished base-coating the component parts.

Yea, Sergeant Paint Pot is pointing at me, commanding me to paint him faster!
I noticed that after I posted the picture, glad someone else picked up on it
Excited to get this mini started. These Death Company are taking a LOT longer to paint than I expected. The joys of highlighting black are both many, and varied.
Other half got to go to his work xmas party so I finally got some painting time!!!
Very WIP pic here. Base coat of colours is down. Need to tidy up a little though. Warcolours paints are a bit more transparent than expected so there are a few splatters here and there xP
Prepare your eyes for the blinding pain of Froglet: The eyesore!
Spoiler:
Next stage is to clean up and start properly transitioning the colours.
Finally got him off his base too so I can start fixing that up too!
It's Dronecember, so that's my theme, Count me in for the first time. I plan on doing a line of drones, a total of 4-5, think of it as the happy mask salesman from Zelda, but instead with drones, and a Tau, and like nothing like that other thing I mentioned D:
Here's my bitz photo, the Crisis Suit isn't part of it, but I'll be using bitz from that kit to make some of the drones:
Wee bit of progress on librarian Turmiel over the weeknd.Blues and greens and skin. Need to revisit the osl from his psychic eye again and the greens need a final glaze but hey-ho progressis progress Excuse the usually pish wip photo
Not a WIP or anything, but I just want to say that after watching everyone paint for 10 months, I can see how everyone is improving more and more. Hell, I couldn't even edge highlight before this! Thank you Paradigm, I think you've helped a lot of us improve.
Hey! So here's a WIP - so far i've finished 2/5 veterans in the squad, which are pictured below. Been averaging 1 mini every 2 days which is a pace i'd like to continue
So, if someone could let me know if this counts, it would be a big help: I got these guys in a trade, and I will be stripping and repainting the models, but the only picture I have of them is them in their old colors, so it wouldn't count as a proof pic, yes?
Brennonjw wrote: So, if someone could let me know if this counts, it would be a big help: I got these guys in a trade, and I will be stripping and repainting the models, but the only picture I have of them is them in their old colors, so it wouldn't count as a proof pic, yes?
it would count as long as the end result is significantly different or clearly the work of a new painter.
You guys who can bang out mind blowing work in an afternoon make me sick. And by “sick” I mean "insanely jealous”. I will continue to think of you as either mono-task painting servitors, locked in a basement somewhere, or fell sorcerers, who have sold their souls to the ruinous powers for unnatural abilities. Possibly both.
I’m still slowly plodding away on my entry. I should have something mediocre by the end of the month.

Hey, don't be so hard on yourself buddy, those guys have loads of painting experience and have likely taken years of practice and hard work to get to such a level. There are a few in this competition that are leagues ahead of the rest of us, but do what I do and also use it as a good motivation to get something finished. I will be lucky to even get a point among such strong competition, but at the end of the month I will have a fully painted model which is a win for me personally

Thanks for the thought, but I probably have painted models on my shelf older then some of those guys. Some people can use the “they’ve got more experience” excuse, but not me. That said, self depreciating humor aside, I have gotten somewhat better with time. I’ve probably seen more improvement in my skills in the last year or two then the previous ~25. These competitions being a big part of that.

Regarding that, something to consider is that a lot of stuff becomes procedural. I was able to do the Ta'unar in about 6 hours, but its a very procedural piece and I was able to quickly move from one to the other. I'm full time Navy (at least for 318 more days ) and a Dad, so I dont have the luxury of being locked in a basement yet. Having said that, I'm trying to get better over the next year, and working on single model stuff from Painting Buddha can cost 8 hours of work just on small sections. One day I hope those skills will become procedural as well, and the time devoted wont be so high.
Just food for thought, I guess Im trying tio say if you actively work to reduce the time required not for the sake of rushing it but for the sake of getting to paint more, then its a skill you can develop.
lipsdapips - those Ultras are fantastic! Real depth on the metallics and you're quite right to post that detail shot of the plasma gun arm, the strap and plasma coils are particularly good.
lechine - so we're adding you to the top 3 on a permanent basis like Januine, then? Goodness that's impressive.
Holy smeg, there's some fantastic work being done here! I wonder if that's in part the open theme, people are just choosing the minis they really think they can do the best on.
Got to rustle something up to enter myself, no idea what yet. Possibly Lorgar if I have time, maybe something a little smaller if not...
Holy chuff, everyone's bringing their A game this month, the tau is beautiful, the shading on the solitaire is so sharp and those ultramarines are gonna look awesom. Sorry if I've not fan-boyed everyone, but those are most recently awesome
Sadly, I won't be able to do much hobby this month, as my entire Christmas break is lined with family stuff this year I had wanted to do a Sicaran, but there's just no way I'll get it finished.
So... just to play ball, I'll include the last member of my Calth tactical squad that I have to complete
Blood Angels Legion Tactical Marine with Missile Launcher
WIP 4: Decided to change colour of hair from blonde to dark grey and add a bit of stubble. Added another couple of layers. Should be able to start adding the finer details soon and do a bit more with the base. Photos taken with my phone so not the best I'm afraid.
I'm looking for a name for my Blood Angel veteran. Anybody got any suggestions?
Time for a bit of WIP.....in an ironic sense. To the right of the photo you can see this months entry, the Grave Wardens. As you can also see, been makings extent progress on everything else!
Ps, does everyone else have weird blue curly things covering all their 'buttons' like edit and exalt etc?
While working on one of my models I accidentally gutted my thumb to the bone with my hobby knife. I should be able to finish my models this month regardless of the week delay I had. Work will resume Friday.
Ruberu wrote: While working on one of my models I accidentally gutted my thumb to the bone with my hobby knife. I should be able to finish my models this month regardless of the week delay I had. Work will resume Friday.
Ouch. I'll echo Januine and say I hope you are okay. Was it a dull blade that suddenly slipped?
Whelp. Unfortunately, this Christmas will be tons of family stuff, so no time for a super-duper model. With the contest being an open challenge, I would have loved to have done a Sicaran, a Knight, or at least an Outrider, but I have to settle for this because of time constraints :(
At least I got to give the missile launcher some extra love
Guys, guess who managed to hurt his knee for the fifth time this year so he can hardly walk and therefore should finally be able to paint something? ME!

lalalalalalala
So many things to do, so little time. <sigh>
I’m also curious what’s on deck, but at the rate this month is going, I’m not sure how sane I’ll be at the start of the new year. I vote for something on the easy side, to slowly work back up to speed.
Poll will go up about the 20th as usual, not sure on the themes yet (apart from the one that carried over from November) so any suggestions are welcome!

I'm just feeling at a loose end because I pulled a Talys and got done on the 4th Dec. Need to tidy up and photograph but it's pretty much done.
I like resolute. The problem with that is most everyone will pick one on the 1st, and give up halfway through the month...
It might be a little meta/restrictive, but how about something like "3rd party". Paint a non-GW mini, or at least one with prominent 3rd party add-ons/bits. There are a lot of very good companies out there, and it might be fun to broaden our world. I’d worry that we’d exclude people though, as not everyone can go out and grab something in time. Not that there aren’t plenty of low cost options out there, but the logistics might be an issue for some.
Paradigm wrote: Poll will go up about the 20th as usual, not sure on the themes yet (apart from the one that carried over from November) so any suggestions are welcome!
Flashy and Shooty-Like Flash Gitz or units with big gunz
Tyranids-Army Specific, can also include Genestealer Cult.
Be Mindful of your surroundings-Got a few good diorama ideas for this theme, it was in a poll for October's challenge
Winter-Model must be associated with winter in some way.

Winter is slacking hard. I should have shoved a foot or so of snow at this point, and it’s raining and in the high 40s now. I primed stuff outside with a rattle can last week. Madness
I’m good with that as a theme though. I snow base my Ultras anyway.
Also - my entry is complete and 2 days ahead of schedule! Here is the Command squad in its finished glory - (also threw in a pic with the captain and some solo pics of the apothecary as he's the last finished model)
How about 'presents' you know we'll all get something nice for crimbo, and whoever gave it will want to see it built and painted. So the proof pic must be wrapped, might not even know what your do until you've opened it!

Thanks for the concern ZergSmasher and Januine, it tis just a flesh wound. It was a fresh blade that cut through the metal faster than I had expected it too. My effort this month has not been totally fruitless though. I got the Emperor finished a couple days ago
This is the original proof pic of it I posted earlier...
and now...
If I am unable to get anything else done this month because of the wound and the holidays coming up, at least I am happy with the completion of this model.

Coat 2: Reaper Ultramarine Blue + Ultramarine Shadow in 1:1
Coat 3: SW Blue Black wash
Coat 4: SW Blue Black wash again
Both ships, ready for detailing. I haven't quite settled on everything yet so I'll try out some stuff on the smaller ships in the force before getting to the big guys.
So far I'm quite happy with them. I'm really glad I entered the challenge, it's a great way to stay motivated. I think I'll probably try and stick with these competitions as a way of getting stuff done!
Plugging away here. Should be done with the blues, need to wash the golds, do the robes, and about a zillion other details. I need to be done by Tuesday if I want to make it, so need to get cracking.
Presenting Itchy and ShotCalla. Itchy is replacing a Grot from an assault squad who got promoted (demoted?) to artillery duty, and ShotCalla is now the fourth grot in the same artillery unit.
(@para think I have been missed on the list of entrants)
Glad to see we are still getting entries in, looks like it will be a packed month
lipsdapips really like the look of your squad, the power weapons are great.
Its been a pretty hectic week so haven't been able to undercoat the models yet, hopefully will this evening. I'm getting nervous that I won't finish in time but I'm off work now till the new year so hopefully will get some painting time now
A quick set of WIP pics, its taken ages to get the metal rods in and supporting the wolves weight and then wraping them in GS to try and make them look like reins (it could have gone better but can't change it now)
I'm not sure I'm going to get anything done this month. I have barely started on my Assassins, and I'm not feeling the inspiration I need. Plus real life has been making me tired, what with the holidays and all. And I have that Tau Stormsurge that has been occupying what hobby time I have had. At the very least I am probably going to change my entry. We'll see.

I'm sure they'd enjoy splatter style art designs on their clothes, so it's all win-win.
Of course now that I have snapped the pics, I see a few more things that need to be cleaned up. Zoom, you are a cruel mistress. Don’t think I have time to do the touch ups, and frankly it looks fine from a tabletop POV. Thanks for another month of competitions everyone, it’s been a good time as always!
Finished base coating and started some detail work. Hope to get that out of the way over the next few days and then I can get to the time consuming bit, the robes.
@Midget Gems: That looks insane, in the most awesome way possible. Great plasticard work
Thanks Noodles, I had to bend the plasticard into shape with a lighter to get the curves on the front and back (I don't recommend doing this in any way). Your tank is looking very good, I like the turret, gives it a good sense of chunkiness.
I really like the stubble you have done on that min Nevelon, really adds to the character of his face
I painted a guy! Almost, at least. I guess he's almost done, I just need to finish the details. I'm planning to finish a Thunderwolf, then I'll call it for this month.
oh - next month. had a thought for a theme while its still in my head. "It's a secret" something to do with clandestine, secretive ops/figs/characters etc
