Time to pick what we're painting next month! As usual, the poll will run for 2 days, with the winner being next month's theme and the runner up going forward to the poll for the the month after.
Without further ado, the options:
One Among Many: Your entry should either be a single model chosen fro your army's basic troops, or 2-5 models from any unit, where both coherency and individuality are the focus. For example, a single Tactical Marine, or 5 Warriors of Chaos
The Strategist: Your entry should consist of a model or models not directly involved in battle. They could be posed checking a scanner, reading a map, operating a radio or simply non-combatants like ground crew or medics.
Size Matters Not: Your model should be something either significantly smaller or significantly larger than an average human in its respective scale. For example, a Dwarf/Halfling/gretchin or a bulky Ork, a model in a large armoured suit or even a giant!
Extreme Range: Your entry should be carrying or operating some kind of long-range weapon, such as a sniper rifle, lascannon, longbow ect.
As usual, the poll will run for 2 days! Get voting!

Very well thought out solution, Para.
If One among many were to win, do you have any objection to set-dressing Photoshop? Putting the figure against a digital (unfocused) prop for one picture?
I have picked up Horus today, and I'd want to show him addressing ranks of troops like his paintings, but I own literally zero marines.

I've no issue with photoshop SFX, though I'd say Horus doesn't really qualify for 'army's basic troop type'! (unless you're fielding an army of Primarchs, I guess)

My brain went somewhere odd, blame the tiredness.
I was thinking because he was clear the basis of many clones, such as Little Horus, he was the sort of first, among many.
In which case I still don't have anything suitable to work on for that option.

Its a nice idea, but I don't want to mix that project with anything else. I also don't want to roll
It out publicly in February for the sake of having something to do in the competition.
Hell, if I take a month out, I take a month out. As I said before, there have been simple months I've intended to finish and failed, so I'm not going to stress.

Voted for Size Matters Not. I could probably think of something for every category though. My ideas for each:
One among many: I have so many basic mooks that need paint that it isn't even funny.
The Strategist: I have a CSM Dark Apostle that needs some painting love, and his pose looks like he might be behind the lines encouraging the forces of Chaos onwards rather than actually being in the thick of the fighting himself.
Size Matters Not: I'm looking at a Tau Stormsurge that really needs some paint...
Extreme Range: I've got Sniper Scouts, Tau Pathfinders with Rail Rifles and even a Predator Annihilator that would fit the bill nicely.

Can't believe there's such little attention for the strategist! Got my vote easy - however all the categories (except size matters not for me - I don't have anything big or small down here ) are appealing, so not phased if it doesn't go through.

Space Marine is definitely happening in March, I already had that planned as a nice, accessible start for newcomers (I'd like to see a month with 50 or more completed entries at some point, I think we've hit about 40 on the highest so far?) and as a way for those who've stuck with it the whole way to see how far they've come.

@BillyC: Welcome aboard! Is that Giant and Fanatic idea an actual option? Because I definitely, definitely want to see that if it is! Don't worry about a lack of experience or anything, the whole point of this challenge is that it's more about the effort you put in and the fun you have while doing so than how good the final results are. Equally, it is a chance to push yourself, so if you're getting back into painting then I say there's no better way to get motivated to learn something new (other than another kb_lock bollocking, but the challenge is undoubtedly less scary! )

After making a potato head stompa that literally reproduced Irondog's, and posting it here, I'm certainly not in any position to argue too heavily in favour of originality. But then, I wouldn't want to, either: part of the joy and great thing about this hobby is that we can inspire each other with our projects and ideas. You're not copying and pasting, you're taking an idea and developing it on your own. You still have to sculpt/convert the model, and you still have to paint it- so it's yours. I mean, I'd think that it's still important to cite the original source to give credit for the idea, but I'd say go for it!

I've been eyeing up the various Malifaux effigies as a possible alternative to a 3rd Witchling Stalker. Really like the Carrion Effigy, has a cool early-modern era plague doctor vibe, but it doesn't get released over here until February 26th. Does kinda make me want to paint something in a different scale though. I do have some OGRE stuff kicking around, and just found a lone epic mole mortar lurking around my workbench.
I think this would be neat for a "mini-poll" of sorts in next month's thread: people taking the challenge choose large model or small model so we can try to get an idea of what's more popular, and what's underrepresented. Of course, if I cannot find/buy Gretchin of sorts in time, I may resort to something like Hobbit or Goblin LotR repaints or a Deffkopta, if so permitted.

Can't decide, I've got Orclings and Trolls both in my queue. I've got some truly big stuff too but not sure I wanna deal with it at the moment.

It's liable to happen, but I'd be going over the 5 model limit

Of course! In general, you can interpret the theme however you like, but stuff like that is definitely good to go.

From reading through past comps etc having a mini thats primed/undercoated in 1 colour already is fine right?
I have a Goblin Bag Pipe player that was undercoated years ago I'd love to use but his skin is already basecoated.
I am stripping minis tomorrow again though so wondered if I needed to through him in?

So long as it's no more than one colour it's fine. So if it's just the skin that you've started then it's all good.
