I´ve been absent for quite some time now...being mostly unproductive hobby wise...
got a new job, lost lots of time to it, had to loose the job due to health and for family...now i am reorientating...
but i want to be more productive in terms of hobby...and since my own old blog was collecting dust for quit some time now and since i am a bit shifting projects...i thought it was high time to start a new thread...
also...i started working on tau´s ...with the new start collecting boxes out there my son Oskar tempted me to start building a new tau army...as he thinks them cool looking...and i liked the challenge^^...
well...later on i will show you the first pics then^^+
hahahah...you and me both Vik! Welcome back old friend, good to see you back at the workbench! I Hope everything is on up with health and life! Looking forward to the madness that is about to ensue! Cheers!
so much applause indeed bore any contend was shown...i am genuinely flattered
to justify your faith and your need for a true cause to stay here...first the pics
and truly welcome to my:
now on to the projects...
for the raising interest in toy soldiers and terrain i started to work on some projects with my two sons...
Felix, the older one wanted to build orky ruins...pics of these later on...as they are very WIP for now...
with my younger Oskar i started some jungle terrain pieces...swampy was my intention...
and three more pieces of future swampy jungle terrain...WIP
mostly done with washes/inks...as i like to work with the more fluid washes currently...i feel very rusty when it comes to painting standards^^
also...this is the tribe of the ghost face clan... the first platoon of a highly auxiliary coloured tau army....blue kroots...also mostly washed...
the actual tau ...when they will be started for good should look a bit like this fella here:
(ignore the hideously done base.... )
more of my works later on...so sty tuned^^
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
now on to the comments....
Theophony wrote:Holy Subbed,

So will the Tau be based off your british-ish faction or something new to the steampunk frey, or will it be more 40K centric.
well...as seen above, the tau will benefit from lots of future auxiliary troops....i have lizardmen...beastmen and how knows who will follow too...i currently want to avoid humans...but we´ll see about that... and the scheme is still not nailed down...but currently i favor a drybrushed and washed look... so primed black, heavy drybrush of white to follow and then i color in some patches^^...so more 40k centric like you said in the end^^

so it is madness ye want...granted^^... well, we´ll see about sanity...but i also have some nifty scratch building planned...i probably will go down a different route where all vehicles of the tau are concerned...money is the limiting factor here...so creativity has to help me out here^^... the aim is to stay within the borders of the tau visuals but maybe create some new looks nevertheless...couriosly there arent that many cool and innovtive tau scratch builds out there...

RIGHT ON!!!!! BLUE KROOT! You KNOW ive gotta fondness for blue kroot...hmmmm....now im seriously excited to see what happens. Vik scratch building tau tanks is something i refuse to miss. I was kicking around ideas of kroot walkers fashioned from looted eldar war walkers with tau bric a brac...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......hehehe....bring it on vik!
Indeed, the eldar war walker would be a good starting point...
Can't link atm as I am seeing a doc, later on I'll show you what might be the foundation for a vik style hammerhead/ devilfish scratch build...
And indeed, your 100% guilty for my blue kroot, you and James Cameron...
Love the look so far, and the ghost face tribe is an excellent name.
Hope everything works out okay at the doctor's office......you didn't go see Dr. Doom did you??? He's not a good doctor, too busy taking over the world to stop you from bleeding out
Nice Blue Kroot, and your Tau promise some nice work ahead, not sure on the basing!
Jungle is looking good for a start too.
I also look forward to some scratch built Tau tanky goodness, and interesting thoughts on walkers also, mmmmm making my juices stir. No I have enough on my plate.
Good to see you around here at any rate bud, we have missed you, I know you have been loitering with intent, but it has not been the same.
I am sorry to hear that things did not all work out as your dreams intended, but when life gives you lemons....make Lemonade. It is difficult, but we have to make the best of what we have. And you sir have some amazing talents and a crazy bunch of miscreants that like to follow your exploits, so bring on the crazy sir. Bring on the crazy.
my sore shoulder/ arm has given me lots of trouble and lack of sleep over the c(o)urse of the past weeks...but i am a wee bit on the mend and urges have to be satisfied...so i started a wee bit of scratch building...see below...

the Doc you mentioned is infamous for one thing quick solutions.... thankfully my doc (or rather docs, cause i needed more than one opninion on my case...) didn´t opt for quick, that would probably ro rip the shoulder right off^^...

the base on that poor tau earlier on was for a comp i miserably failed...as alwayys... ...it was on a theme of brothers in arms...and they were all standing in a flaming backdrop...thus the red and yellow...no wonder i didn´t win that one
yeah... well the lemonade is somewhat sweet as i am able to be there for my kids when illnesses or school free times happen...so n fussing and explaining to bosses...you only cherish this one when possible...usually bosses grow an extra row of teeth whenever you ask something on the behalf of your kids...

Haha yes the spelling mistake... wish i would have chosen something else but oh well.
Nice blue kroot though, well worth the wait
by the way... Vikor von Domm is a name destined for faame but also due to a spelling error...
sooooo... back to business...
behold...and actual update! and even concerning the aforementioned craziness ...well...scratch builds...^^
here you can see some piranha stand in/ count as....not finished yet, as i need to find away to add weaponry and two drones to the build...well...i am open for ideas, as currently i am a bit puzzled how to accomplish these^^...
note...these are mostly build from deo roll on... i have stockpiled empty used up stuff from these for quite some years now... and was always eager to see them gettting used for a nice build...so if these work, then i can have quite a flock of prinahas...soon^^...
well...pics:
well...they still need some way to add weaponry as described above and under the rule of wysiwyg they also need room for two drones...ideas would be welcome on how to add these two details...
HAHA brilliant! i can see there going to look good, i think you should have the guns straight on the front, and the drones either cut into the bonnet area or hanging of the back. Wouldn't loose its aerodynamics then.
I thin with the rounded nature of your ships you should use "alien tech" and just make some "gills" in the bottom of the ships like the gills on a stingray.
No barrels need to stick out at all, it could all be internal in the ships.
I'll show some in there natural habitat, shall I?
Well they're so nice and curvy I wanted to use them for something scratch built for quite some time...
And I am doing this as a kind of homage towards the old times of shower gel bottle tanks
The Orgus Grav Attack? Wow, that was 'ancient' history--early '90's when I saw it--in the original Rogue Trader book. (I think. Did it make it into the 2e books? I cannot recall.) It was an old deodorant container. There was an Orgus flyer too.
Vik, What are those pieces on the sides? And if you have more of them, perhaps on the next piece, put them on wings of some sort, so it looks like a VTOL craft. The wings would also provide a place for the drones too.
Nevelon wrote: It made a cameo in the 3rd edition vehicle design rules.
I have a pair of them that I built kicking around somewhere.
Now you have to post those!
Not to derail this thread with my horrid attempts, I posted them in the Flashback Friday thread.
I actually had three! Forgot about the green one. A little worse for wear, but a couple decades loose in a box will do that. I also discovered the “how to paint” guide from my first Ral Partha paint set. Should be interesting to read.

The deodorant bottle challenge. Must show your used deodorant bottle before you start. That will eliminate half of the gamers I know as they still have the full deodorant bottles from when they were teenagers

And therein lies the challenge - to get them to use them....
i have finished and submitted m entry for the LoER Terrain competition...now awaiting who will win...
Spoiler:
finished the teleporter entry...
made mostly from ice pop makers and hot glue, and sugar eggs....and painted mostly by inks....these teleporters are meant to be used as gamming pieces....two of these six pieces can be used to hide a model inside...all six are numbered with tau signs and i even made a really small dice with tau numbers on it....the rule for the teleporters is that a model enters the energy beam in the middle and according to the dice it will emerge from the given number then... thus creating a random hide and seek gaming element on the table top...
well...:
WIP pics
and finished
easter eggs...as you´ve stated that you could be bemusedby the addition of easter eggs...
and the dice...
in the mean time i have been busy...making terrain...
i am currently coming up with an idea for a new table...i call it : Storage Wars...well....it is relying heavy on containers, and barrels and boxes of all kinds...thus i started with a little collection of barrels and a first small set of containers...all scratch build by yours truly...and made from wood, cardboard, paper and cork...without any help from any templates and such...but i think overall they look quite convincing...
have a look:
just a simple and plain log...with lots of addition so that it now looks like a container...at least i hope so^^ corrugated cardboard as the surface...and candy floss sticks used for the details...
scaleshot...
all will be fully stackable...
for now there are only fully solid ones...but i guess it is inevitable to have at least a couple of these hollow and open...
then there are the barrels...made from wine corks...(believe me, i didn´t kill all these bottles...i am not a drinking man at all and currently even forbidden as my cholesterol is too high and thus i am living almost as a saint...)
one is broken already to have a little leakage story telling object^^^
all these are in desperate need for paint...which wish will be granted soon as my son oskar is eager to help me and all this was planned as easy to paint terrain pieces so ideal for youngster painting^^
hope you´ll like...and more of this soon too!
also...cam...here is a mock up of your suggested look with a possible scratch build tau drone version and actual drones...:
cheers, vik
what do you think...? the aesthetics are a kind of double entendre...?
The shipping containers are great vik , you could also do a pile of rope/cable rigging parts and a dropped crate that hit the ground and shattered if your looking for ideas.
Teleporters look great, I really need to pay more attention to the competitions, but I never complete one and it's over in that other sub forum
It might just be my filthy mind, but I can’t look at that scratch build and not see something obscene. Well, at least a little risqué.
On a more practical point (which I’m not very sure on), don’t tau drones have the ability to do things (like shoot) while still attached? It looks like that placement will have them sunk into little bays, so their guns won’t be showing.
Welcome back, vic. I myself was gone for a long as well, i debuted my return with starting my blog thread for my looted drop pod idea from waay back. I invite you stop in and peruse my new stuff at your leisure.
As for the riders, nothing in the rules says you have to see them, so there's no reason You can't put a closed cockpit on those piranha. As for drones, regular bases 25mm could work, or the base of the small flight stand.
Edit: never mind, i see you found something already.
Something weird going on on Dakka, I have had a bunch of ideas lately, and before I start in on them someone comes along and does it! Actually had mould built for this.
Excellent shipping containers. Look perfect.
And Graven that is another idea out the window ta! Been thinking on a board that is the docks with a sunken broken up ship, true scale partially submerged. The actual table top being water, would only build the keys and the odd boat to play across.
Wow! A FRESH Vik Thread! see. I told you that you were the celeb! I think Tau-themed stuff is right in your wheelhouse Vik. Your imagination is great with round shapes and lines. You have to invent Tau Rivets though. Maybe just die-cut shapes you glue on in layers?
The Storage containers are amazing. They can get boring to paint, but they make great gaming scatter and photo backdrop bitz
and i followed my insticts....to what end you may ask?
well....let the pics do the talking here...
everything you here see was made firstly from pine wood sticks...the construction is really sturdy...
after this much further work went in the build and i added a wire fence by using sewing thread, match sticks and later on cardboard and of course rivets...and a brass angle too....also...since the comp requires something to make it sound^^ i got me a small and cheapo chip and micro setup that allows to record and play ten seconds worth of "noise"...
and this is where everything is atm...:still unpainted but riveted...:
also...this is an aquilla made by Camkierhi....excellent work and it helped me for ages...all my own eandeavors to fabricate something like that looked way too feeble...:facepalm....thanks agaiin Cam!!!
by now you probably guessed it right....it is a dice tower....^^
hope you like...
cheers, vik
Camkierhi wrote:Excellent work, the star of the show for me is that fencing, the wire work! it is amazing, brilliant idea, and looks perfect bud, great work.
one of the works i´ve done that inlcuded the heaviest use of swear words throughout as the thread always slipped where it should have stayed...even though i glued the start and then some inbetween stages points to the matchsticks......but many thanks matey^^

thanks neveon, thing is it can play anything up to ten seconds of time...it has two buttons...under the "vents" one for record and one for play...
aaaaannd...
we all know i have the attention span of a concussed kitten when it comes to seeing through a project....
i have around four or five worthy armies of imps...
then the tau xenos force i recently started...
two worthy forces of space marines...(can always cobbled together in one giant force...)
a quite big amount of green skins...enough to make an only grot force and a standard template force of orks...
and now...what could be the next shiny diversion from my not so clear path?
bet you wouldn´t guess that...
well....it is ssupposed to be sisters...
always faniced a female faction for our table (what table do yooou ask...well more to that still later on in this very post... )
sisters....of...er...(currently not done with the title^^)
but we have some footage of some tests...of kitbashhes that i need your expert opinions...
behold:
first a mix of bretonian body, skitarii hed and dark eldar secoond edition arms...
then a mostly second edition DE body and arms mixed with a skitarii helmet and marine flamer...and backpack of skitarii
second try of DE second edition body...where the first try was a female body...this oone is a male body but i used a bretonian fleur de lils to suggest boobs...what do you think? its still (h-)armless^^
and then i made the next one out of kabalite warrior bits and skitarii bits...what do you think?
i soon will be getting some harpy bits and will be making more trys...we´ll see how these then will work out...i also own the odd twenty something second edition DE warriors...i want to use...all comments will be apreciated...GS work is soon planned for the lot of them...after all some addition of cloth is need on the lot of them...!
also...thiis abomination i´ve built with corn foam with the kids...:
and i made this statue for an upcoming city scape table i am also secretly working on...:
speaking of the tale i mentioned earlier...:
we used four different sized storage racks of IKEA Trofast...lots of storage for lego and other stuff...
then we built it up with a giant wooden board...
and some scale shots of the finished table...
(zoom in....that´s my biggest tank on top of it...^^)
and it also has a day to day use as a play table for the kids...as its residenz is the kids room...^^
also...the measurements of the table are : 1,86m to 1,64m... fething big i have to say so myself^^
The sisters look good Vik, I'm not too sure about the hooded head though. Something doesn't seem to fit with the body robes...or maybe I just can't see the robes on the legs....
Orky dice tower needs Teef, Dakka, and needs to be painted red on the inside, to help the dice go Fasta.
Orks believe they will roll 6s when using it, so they naturally do roll 6s every time
Foam marine looks fun
What is this secret terrain?..you don't GET to have secret terrain Viktor VonDomm!
That Table is badass Vik! That's brilliant! That table will get used for all sorts of activities and play! I can tell the boys love it! Tell them Uncle Dave is proud of their Lego City and I want them to build the League Tower of Justice
Viktor von Domm wrote: ...you know what? through out the build i always speculated where to inlcude plant life to meet your expectations......and stll haven´t found a good spot.... ...
Well, at least I'm not judging this round.
Without much of a base (and therefore ground) there is limited places to add plants.
Look for cracks in the "wood", concrete, and/or brick and mortar structures and stick a small tuft of grass sticking out. Anywhere that gets little wear or footfalls to damage the young plant.
well...here goes nothing...these pics below show my efforts and entry for your round in these competitions...
Spoiler:
scale shots
Spoiler:
some WIP shots...
Spoiler:
explanation to the build and paint job...
well...mostly built from wood and cardboard, the walls should look like concrete, painted then aged beyond recognition...for strengthening the build it was fastened with steel bands.
the wire of the barbed wire was made from simple sewing thread...which more and more looked like barbed wire because it frizzed out due to the priming and painting process
this is a mostly airbrush paint job, as i recently got a compressor and i try to learn now how to cope with new tech^^...also...for the "grafitti" name tags on the walls i used acrylic pens...!!! highly recommendebale to add to everyones paint box!...
well...that´s that...
oh and since this is a competition about sounding terrain pieces...i made a video...uploaded it to you tube...here it is:
ok...this is shocking....more than a year ago was my last update...tstststs...
well i was not completely lazy...hobby-wise....more to that later...
but for now i want to show you all (for those still following this man´s comings and goings...^^) the "tower of death"...
as we all have seen, the new ´munda is out there... new shiny gangs, and terrain...and rules...well i got my own set of all of the above...but where would be the fun of it all if we only survived and played with what GW has provided us with? right? it would get pretty bland pretty soon...
so the message here is clear, at least for me and some selected few...making your own cool looking terrain sets to play gang wars ...
recently...read that as five years ago, i found a used smaller cable drum...and this together with foam sheets and foamboard and lots of cardboard will be the foundation of a hopefully cool terrain piece...if not the centre piece of a ´munda table...
oh...and the cool twist of the tower of death is...: it is mounted on a turntable...so it will be accessible from all sides all of the time...just with a litte twist of the turntable...cool, eh?
well i talked enough for now...picture time it is of now:
turntable in a foam "nest":
cable drum on top of it all...:
then with added platforms...i think the pics speak for themselves:
this all is very early...much changes still to happen and many crossroads probably on the way.... think of adding ladders, maybe stairs even, on top will probably be some buildings, landingplatform etc...lots of railing, hazard stripes and rivets...zillions of it^^...
He's baaaaack!
Great to see you return, and with a great idea too
I'm not much into Munda, but I always look Forward to your creations
Keep that Mojo flowing Mate!
There better be a Bruce Lee reference in there somewhere.
Also, consider (if you haven't already) a final floor at the top of that stair that spans around to the hole in the top (side of the spindle) and then a ladder up through that hole to get to the roof.
Theophony wrote:Good to see you back in business Vik!
I’m still holding off on necromunda till more of the game is out and about, but will be watching for updates.
well...to be honest...i will probably not be able to actually "play" a ruleworthy game of ´munda in the foreseeable future...but if that piece of terrain sees a bit of playing with with my kids...then every brush stroke was worth it...and my son felix is already edgy as heck to work with me and later on play with this set...
Klaus, not Santa wrote:He's baaaaack!

currently the mojo is flowing...as mentioned above my son is kindling the fires too...he has lots of ideas too...
can´t really say if munda is good or not...old munda or new munda, come to that, but i like that setting, that close quarter fighting, the gang making... so many oportunities for cool looking models...and with little to none restrictions...so double wielding bolters or lasguns or shotguns...^^ happy times for gun nerds^^

had to look that one up doc...didn´t watch that many Lee movies...i´m the generation of van damme for better or worse
the upper platform is a definite given that this will be used...either as a landing platform...or for that matter as a smallvillage worth of shacks and huts i am currently looking for good and easy ways to do stairs and ladders...with not too much effort...
CommissarKhaine wrote:Good to see you back at it. Lovely start to a huge piece of terrain, following
it is it appears somehow impossible for me to do small terrain...or tanks...somehow i always end up with huge projects...seems i have to compensate for something....
so....to keep this thing here rolling...it needs continuously to be updated...which is why...i present to you...support:
note: the whole build currently is still loosely stuck together...so it will later on be glued in place...my son suggested it to be able to have moving platforms...but this would mean the support columns would have to go...but the foam-board wouldn´t be that sturdy enough to hold metal minis...so a stationary approach is needed here... as you can see, in the relative middle i added a widened platform to use up all that empty space...
doc H ´s idea with the almost full final floor is something i need to think about... currently i have used up all foam-board atm... so i need to get me supplies for that first...
also...to later on not kill myself i need to build it in sections that i can then paint separately...so watch this space here...definitely more to come..

While I am also more of the Van Damme era, I am more of a Lee fan. Although Jackie Chan is my favourite if I had to choose.
Probably not a quick job to look it up, your "tower of death" was so close to the actual "game of death" (set in a tower/pagoda) I assumed it was an inspiration.
...i am currently looking for good and easy ways to do stairs and ladders...with not too much effort...
As an idea for ladders.
Take 2 long rods and drill through them at intervals. The uprights. Square or strips can be easier to drill through.
Push lengths of thinner rods through the holes from one to the other. The rungs.
Check my latest build in progress in my money making thread for an example of a ladder built like this.
Looking good! For easy ladder, the handholds on the old leman russ sprue on a strip of plasticard might be n easy wya if you cna source enough? Every guard player worth his salt should have gazillions, so that should be feasible.
I have some wire-bending pliers that make a perfect little 90 degree curve when bent around it. you could make up a bunch of them, then drill some holes or glue them on like rivets. Wire would be heavier tho
That spiral tower is looking good, very sci-fy. I'm looking forward to seeing it as you continue to work on it. Do you have any pics of that sweet game table you made with a battle happening on it?

hey doc! well...damme is really not someone i would like to meet...so not my kind to be fan of...chan...on a whole different book...that man is epic!!! and lee probably is a legend^^

i do own some ...a handful so to say... but i treasure these...i am an old miser^^...and since i have three levels...that would cost way too much in bits...^^

as stated above... i will try my best with a stapler...will keep you up with how this will work...
Syro_ wrote:That spiral tower is looking good, very sci-fy. I'm looking forward to seeing it as you continue to work on it. Do you have any pics of that sweet game table you made with a battle happening on it?
since the whole table was built, it has been not the time again to set the table for a game... well...when i say game i man the kids using the warhammer stuff to their own devices...they´ve developed their own rules...quite flexible ones which are akin to cheating...er roleplaying^^
SOOOOOOOOO......time for an update...lil ole me got a bit self unconscious about my work... so i often build without posting...and decisions were made...
the spiral tower went through some conceptual changes...now it has three levels...two floors i will insert, this means then i wanted to build nine walls with bulkheads and doors...my own design rather than something GW would do...but it has been riveted already to some extent...
here is what it all looks now, but everything is still loose...held with pegs...
see?.... what now needs to be discussed: i want to make ladders...that reach from floor to floor...manholes?...and should they be open "real" holes or should i built hatches and everything and leave the floor in RL intact?...the floors are two half rings each... currently held together by clamps/pegs...later on they will all be glued together and glued on the lower walls...for support...what do you think? the whole thing is a rather heavily sturdy thing, so no real need to have something that can be taken apart... also the kids are really eager to have it finished...they love the piece already....
originally it was meant as a scratch built lego death star stand in...well...it´s still something like that^^...once finished^^...
also...side news... dunno if i wrote this... last year...i killed my AB compressor...well Santa brought me a new one...small and hopefully quiter...we´ll see...but the tower of death will be the first piece to work with...(hell knows, painting such a big beast i really don´t have the patience to paint it with a mere brush )
cheers, and keep the comments comming...and all forms of discussion is highly sought for!
A good way to have multiple hatches that all look functional but are actually flat on the surface is to do one as open and the rest as closed (with floor intact). It gives the impression that they are all covering holes, but you only have to cut one hole.
Tower of Death = Turm des Todes or Totenturm? I know of the Einsteinturm in Potsdam. A seriously cool building.
Go with the hinged hatches for playability's sake. ANd do cover those exposed plywood and foamcore edges with something other than just paint. The piece will look just a bit more polished if you do.
Also, leave slots for catwalks etc to connect to other big buildings.
Vik....You have reimagined, the Cobra TerrorDrome and made it better!!
Spoiler:
It was bigger in the cartoon
I remember buying mine at the store with my own money, carrying that GIANT box up the the register and plunking down my hard-earned cash!
As for the ladder hatches (YES, now you MUST do ladder hatches) I wouldn't worry about real holes, unless you want to model the hatch open. Just glue two appropriately riveted hatch covers to the board.
update time...
red....i´m on it, no bare or ugly materials should be at then end to be seen...hopefully...also, catwalks will happen, they´re planned already and i have two nice salvaged Christmas tree stands that will make excellent catwalk supports...just you wait^^
as for the ladder issue... solved...for good... i went to a hardware store and found some plastic covering mesh for roof gutters...to avoid clogging with leaves... rather cheap and the (for me) excellent width and other measurements for the scale to go as ladders...see below...
dave, your ladders look cool on that tower...but i sometimes have not the patience...then on other moments when i´m in the flow the patience is there to do lots of rivet zen or ladder building...well...every moment creates new opportunities^^
and i loved such playsets too...had the playmobil space station/ ufo soup bowl...loved it for years...
so... pics....
as you can see lights are planned throughout the whole tower...gotta shed some light...right?...
as for the ladders...there is two on each level, and they´re in some sort of tube system... so that means no manholes that can be closed...but a long level to level tube...or maybe not... the ladders are still separate, so everything is still possible^^...god i have to decide...
the middle beam...the main spool "thing" is now covered to look like concrete...hope that is convincing enough... rough concrete...
also... on a not too shabby side note here:
the 25th LoeR terrain competition is on...hosted my Syro...who won with exceptionally cool looking DnD vault furniture set (what a small word for such huge amount of items....)
well...the theme is war efforts...something to battle for...either to keep it or to take it...
https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/751255.page well... i need to challenge myself with something i kept myself away from...casting...
i think to come up with new ideas and new looks i need to broaden my horizons...its still giving me the willies...but the first tries came out not too bad...
the idea is to have a stash of amo or whatever made mostly from casts made from chocolate and praline packagings...stuff you find after you gulped down the sweets...mostly oily and lightweight stuff which with you can´t really scratchbuild without too much hassle...but nevertheless is looking way too promising... ergo...using it as molds...
well...here you can see what my first mold to be was:
and then i filled it with cheap plaster...
i find that the outcome was not that bad... also i had some other "molds" used already as seen in the outcome pic which looked promising...and after a quick search in the kitchen we found even more promising ones...unfortunately we had to empty them first...yummy^^ with the spidey homecoming movie too on dvd^^...well... tomorrow more to this endeavour...
Vik, thanks for the kind words and the exposure for the newest LoER terrain contest. I'm hoping lots of people will join in. I already commented in the contest thread about you're work, but I'll do it here too, those cast pieces look surprisingly good and I can't wait to see more of what you do with them.
during the last days i have started with something completly different...well this sure isn´t news around these pages...but i even finished that piece...
inspired by many really good youtube tutors...i thouight i could do this too...(that´s of course the point of said vids...right?^^)
well...and a certain vibe stuck a chord in me... which led me to more fantasy stuff than actual 40k stuff...
so i made my own little corner of mortheim...well i started with this:
well...what do you think?
anyway...i am currently working on a second mortheim like building...not 100% architectuaral correct but fantasy,eh?
well...more of that later...cheers for sticking with me still^^
Really nice work on the inn or shop, I see a plaque out front so I assume it’s a business of some sort. Lots of cool techniques used on it from the shingles to the stucco finish.
Since your checking out youtubers, try looking up Luke towen, he is a model train terrain guru. Lots of great tuts by him.
The great thing about fantasy terrain is it can be used in sci-fi games as a backwaters world settlement.
THat's a bangin' old-school project Vik! Looks great! Make it just like Necromunda, lots of walkways and cover! Just wattle and daub instead of skull-steel
That is beautiful work bud, and nice to see you letting the muse take you.
To be honest i had to take a double take a couple days ago, after seeing yours, I was looking at some books on a web site and I would swear blind your house was on the site. Looks so professional.
well the first building was just the beginning....
look what i am currently working on...
what you here see is a tavern /inn medieval style...it is a bit big...but that´s how i fly^^
and some individual shots...:
at syro...unfortunatly i don´t have any WIP of the earlier build...but this new one here now shows hopefully plenty...
i kind of built both the same way... make a cube...and then dress it...the first building had lots of air dry clay for the stucco lookand i actually sculpted a lot...the stoneworks for instance...
the new building is more "traditional" foam cut bricks...the colourful wood work is made with actual wooden counting stick (pre school style...) on the whole everything you see here is recycled...
atm i am working on chimney and an inn sign...
so what do you think? on a more sinister side note...this project and the earlier one is meant to be sold via ebay... do you think there is a marketing base for this?
window box plants?...now there is a nice pittoreske idea...this could add a nice splash of colour...i love that idea already! hmmm....
as for the ivy...well as you´re a home owner...it´s understood...ivy can be a pain in the rear...it´s roots even are able to get IN your house...same as with lilac... but if you talk about aesthetics...well...it adds that dreamy touch to trees and walls... ^^ and if you don´t have to take care of said house...who cares^^

I grew up with ivy all over our house and trees. The only thing it’s good for is hiding snakes.
NO IVY , at least at my house. My neighbors is beginning to come through our fence. Time to get diesel fuel
if you want to kill any plants the sneaky way... take a hammer an copper nails...it´s cruel to the plant but it gets the job done...at least thats what my biology teach told me years ago...
Copper sulfate. Useful for algae control too. I do dislike Ivy as well. Hmm, all vines really. Common Greenbrier the most. But also Virginia Creeper.
Liking the building, Vik. The dormers are a bit unusual. Good to see that they are the right size. So many buildings these days have enormous dormers and they look ridiculous. Like they are compensating for something, maybe?
That looks GREAT Vik! I have to pay some big bucks to have a REALLY old Silver Maple tree on my property cut down, before it falls on the house. It's trunk is covered in Ivy. Here Creeping Charlie in the yard is common. It can completely replace your grass with a clover like stuff if you let it go. We live near a lot of old, historic homes (not European Old, but Victorian) , and some of the brick homes have well-manicured Ivy growing. It does look nice.
at red: the chimney is actually already implemented...
cruurently i am blocking the main colours in....pics later
at dave: thanks mate!
at doc: thanks mate!
also on another note:
after i am now a bit more on secure ground with my airbrush now
and being heavily inspired by certain youtube i have now stepped up the next level...(read my wife allowed me a proxxon foam cutter table...)
dsteingass wrote: That looks GREAT Vik! I have to pay some big bucks to have a REALLY old Silver Maple tree on my property cut down, before it falls on the house. ...
This was me last year with a 50 year old red maple. Took a crew of 5 men over 6 hours to down it. That is a lot of man- hours for 1 tree. Yes, expensive. I sleep better knowing it won't guillotine my house during one of the frickin' windstorms we keep getting these days.

yours truly vik^^
I really like it! The only thing that distracts me a little is the roof tiling. It is almost never so orderly and rectangular, as one tile should be covering the joining point of two tiles below it. Otherwise - great little building! Both thumbs up, sir!
Congratulations Vik! those hot wire foam cutting tables are great. My brother bought me one as a gift, it's a pain to pull out of storage, but when I'm willing to it makes amazing work of foam

Vik, a Proxxon? Sweet. Do have fun with it.
fun is such a small word mate! that thing is pure awesomness! it really gives a feeling of achievment when you cut stuff up in neat and small and easy to do portions!!! really everybody go for these^^

you are totally right... the main weak point of the build is the pattern of the shingles... but it is still a learning curve here...and i have made more than one mental note...believe me! (because i see my error every damn second i have to paint that monster...
Dr H wrote:I've just watched a few videos about those foam-cutter thingies. Something to get into once I've cleared out some of the piles of junk I have.
Let us know how it goes, interested in the learning curve.
learning curve is fast! as you litterally race through the stuff you cut, so you cut some more...and then some...materials are competitively cheap...wood or plastic card are way more expensive...when you compare the amount of products you can cut and build with one board of foam... as for now i am rather firm with cutting up straight stuff...what still is a bit of a challenge is free handing cuts....and then round shapes...ive build guides on my own...so i saved up money even here... but these shapes still mainly make up my learning curve...oh and heat management of the wire... that is what you have to master... and there is no second way around it as in the beginning the wire tore quite often^^...but not any more that often^^
Syro_ wrote:Congratulations Vik! those hot wire foam cutting tables are great. My brother bought me one as a gift, it's a pain to pull out of storage, but when I'm willing to it makes amazing work of foam
i currently have it free and out in the open in our apartment as i continously work on it...also...it is totally quiet...really...a mere whisper of a sound does it produce...! so i would recommend putting it back...because then you would have to dismantle it each time...and that hassle is tiresome!

well...now here are the news....the league is sporting the next terrain competition dear audience...and here you can find it

theme is "Sweet like chocolate"
so you have to use sweets packing material to build...something...anything^^...
well i choose this:
got me sweets packaging...in hex shape!
the chocolate chips are already all gone
then with my handy hot wire cutter table i made the surfaces...the foam board i use comes with a detailed surface...at first i hated that... now i see billions of uses^^...
process of building towers for `munda...
two towers for my entry... i will add later on some straps and then some mad amount of rivets of course...
but since the production time of workable materials is so fast... i made more even...just for other themes i am currently interested in...
i am thinking about building a cemetery worth of buildings and terrain pieces...
build already a mausoleum
and a "small" chapel...
in time a small well will follow and then i am open to suggestions regarding the theme cemetery...mortheim style of course...
Fantastic work bud, and really like that texture on the board for the towers. The cemetery work is great. Some nice monolithic monuments, plinths with broken statues etc. all come to mind.
The mad Man now has mad tools to create with. I see only great things in the future....including a long awaited blimp...... especially if it has sides made out of that foam as I could see it painted up as stealth camouflage.
I´ve built already two jigs...the straight edge is quite handy already...and while a bit brute in looks still trusty... the circle cutting jig is something i have to master its use...
(and to be honest... somehow i am too dumb to cut at an angle...so if i want to create trapeze shaped stuff...i feel like being born yesterday... my geometry teach must rotate in his grave...:( )
Just get it close and then add strips of card and rivets . That’s how us dumbies do it. My geometry teacher probably wanted to be buried at an angle, he probably left a formula for the gravedigger to figure out what angle it is.
Greeting folks,
a long quiet on my part always means i was busy on my own...
well...to prove this to you i finally am in a position to show you a bit of progress on what i can achieve with foam and the carving of...:
i have two major projects i am working atm, one is a cemetery i am building consisting of some rather different looking fantasy stoneworks...chapels and monuments...
the other project is that of a small fantasy village, lots of small cottage like buildings, a windmill and a smithery...
well...some peices you have seen in various stages already...but here they are as they are now:
the cemetry:
small chapel
Spoiler:
bigger chapel
Spoiler:
bridge
Spoiler:
Monument with steps
Spoiler:
Tealight monument
Spoiler:
fenced wall
Spoiler:

the village
Spoiler:
building 1
Spoiler:
building 2
Spoiler:
building 3
Spoiler:
building 4
Spoiler:
building 5
Spoiler:
smithery
Spoiler:
the watchtower
Spoiler:
the windmill
Spoiler:
note...everything is still not finished...some need washes, some need drybrushing...small details even might get added still...
in case of the windmill all other parts are already made, they still are not ready to be presented to you as i need to figure out a way/ means to put it together...
in case of the watchtower i might change all windows still... by the way...these parts are all magnetised so that the whole tower is a put together- pull apart piece....for ease of storage and transport...
which brings me also to point out that everything is meant to be sold...so should anyone be interested in buying something...drop me a line!
oh....and forgot to mention...i am building longboats too...:
Spoiler:
i hope i have redeemed myself from the long silence here^^
Your meer presence redeems you Vik , glad to see you haven’t completely disappeared. What I’ve seen so far looks great, but just started back to back double shifts at work, so I won’t be able to look at everything in detail till later. (8:30am this morning till midnight Sunday night , good thing is I get paid to sleep 8 hours in there somewhere .
Wow, so much stuff! The fenced area is beautiful, and I also like lot's of other things, especially the village smithy. I'm sorry to hear you are selling all this stuff, it looks like it's for D&D so I was hoping you had found a group to play with and were crafting all this for your own gaming.
Fantastic Vik, lots of great work in there, back with a bang I would say. It all looks quite brilliant and usable. Best wishes for the sale of much Vik goodness.
@ red
:bows: thanks red....and as i´ve said it probably before....you´re a regular teach... now i know the difference between clinker built and carvel built! (the latter i´ve done...if i had done the build in another way i might have done it proper viking way! ^^
soon....soon... my wife wants me to finish them but i need to do this at my own pace...well...also...i think a nice cobblestone board the size of a market square would help sell the lot...in my head at least...
@ cam... thanks mate... much appreciated
@ syro... yes...it is a shame...i want to at least play with my wife and kids a game ...but they lack the certain imagination skills to play and have fun... at least from my perspective...you might think otherwise...there are so many styles of playing D&D....
@ Briancj... thanks mate!
@ Theo... never will i leave my dakka freinds!
double shifts??? you sure not burning too brightly? steady pace mate! money is good and all but family needs a dad more than a wallet...(sorry if that is too much out of place talk from me...)
take a good look....i need the odd hint here and there to make these "rough hewn pebbles" into diamonds...
I'm sorry to hear that Vik. There are many ways to play D&D, so true. I play with a more wargaming feel, with full boards, terrain, and minis. The children I play with seem to enjoy that way the most. They look forward to combat and talk about how much they like the set-ups on the board. You could do the same thing with your crafting skills, so it might be worth trying again. The kids I'm playing with are between 9 and 12 years old mostly, I don't know how that compares to your family.
Good luck!
Busy boy! I love Buildings 2, 5, the smithy and the watchtower especially, though the fenced wall is great too, really clever, and the window details on the chapels shine also. Mighty productive!
Love the mausoleum and chapels, really liked their roofs.
The Tea light thing is great, reminds me of JFKs eternal flame, just with a roof, it was a strong memory from visiting as a child.
Great start on the windmill base, it looks really top notch, and I like how it has a finished top part so it could be used without the fan blade parts.
The building got better with each one you did, I like the black smith and number 5 the best of the lot.
Only critique I have is the yellow , it just doesn’t do it for me. Might be a picture didn’t grab it right, but to me (and my wife always critiques my color choices so take it with a pinch os salt) I think it’s too bright. Maybe a more earthy beige/yellow could fit it and make it look more like straw roofing and plaster.
The fence walls are great , maybe a second arch or one more section so you can have it all together in a big square.
Save your off cuts to make some tombstones and above ground coffins .
@ inmygravenimage : thanks mate... of course the pics show that i went through a try and error phase...thus your favorite buildings are the ones that i made more recently...my next aim is to make builds that look more lopsided...the hunched and shifted look you get after age and sloppy building processes make the parts settle in an unvuluntary way...
probably tomorrow i will be able to show some good progress...
@ theo: you are spot on with the memorial tealight! that was the idea behind it^^
and even more spot on on the windmill base... i wanted to leave no surface untextured as you never know when someone picks the stuff up and look beneath the "hem"
as for the yellow... just as you stated for your dark elf blood bowlers...it is a mere basecoat to be later serve for a more muted and warmer and calmer hue!
as for the fence...i am reaching again the language barrier...you´re onto something...but i need more (easier to understand for me ^^) hints as to how to better them!!! please... that fenced wall system was something on my mind for years....i really want to do that as good as can be!
also... tombstones and all related stuff already happened... no pics yet... but i want to make some open graves too...also...i have the urge to make it look for the whole cemetery that no actual RL religious "corporate identity" show through... so no crescents or crosses or stars for that matter...more temple than church...which i can tell you is really mind boggling to avoid in a build....cause the hands have a kind of memory and come up with designs we all are accustomed with... but more to this soon!
@ syro: fear not matey, cause i haven´t given up just yet... i have started paint a nice group of skeletons and other undead...so that i have something to populate the cemetery with...in my mind i want to have a mix between frostgrave and D&D to happen on that graveyard....
and my kids are exactly in that age span, Felix, the older one is now 13 and Oskar his younger is 11...and in essence both are quite interested in my endeavours...just lack the needed patience to help me paint ...
Sorry for not being to coherent in my thoughts there, still not fully recovered from the past weeks work.
I just meant that in the group shot of the fence parts you had a square area and one fence section left over behind it all. I just felt you needed to make one more section so the box could be larger, or make another archway like you have for a second entrance into the graveyard square.
Other ideas for your graveyard might be a fallen tree that has busted some tombstones on the way down, disturbing someone’s sleep.
Big spooky tree , because graveyards always have huge trees and b moonlight they get scary.
A little piece of upturned ground and a tipped over headstone (you know where the zombie clawed it’s way out of the grave to seek vengeance).
A fresh burial plot with shovels to fill the whole.

AH! now i got you! that is a good suggestion...although it wasn´t meant to be a square/ circular formation only... i also had the idea of a "snake" like formation too... so a wall with now end and beginning so to speak...
and mate... YOU are spooky...as i rencently got a really thick piece of XPS foam... around 30 cm thick and made a giant tree already from it...with a hot wire tool...man... you are inside my head... i was thinking of a kind of willowtree like thing... if i can do that right...^^

this is a nice idea... i had a foggy idea like that and i will make this tomorrow asap!!! it needs to be done
If you need a picture of a willow tree I’ll take one of ours in our front yard. Winter time with snow around it and yellowed grass like a dead earth setting . It looks great in summer and we get lots of compliments about it anytime we are in our yard.
Am interest (mildly) in Frostgrave as well, so would like any input you have on that. I think most scenery benefits from a seasonal touch. Winter always adds a nice effect to any terrain.
i am in a process to get me the rule book...watched some vids on youtube...it sounds like an easy and fun game...especially when you consider to play it as a campaign...
note...i am currently painting some ebay skeletons...party heroquest oldies and old WHFB ones...all for a nice upcoming game with the family...
also the walls are almost finished... just adding some final touches...
Ach, more people looking at frostgrave....I feel like I’m getting pulled in by others. Let me know how you like it....because I feel it is inevitable that I will get frostbite.
Oh my, I even missed my four years absent jubilee for posting new content...
dunno if someone is even remotely interested any more in my works, mind you the last years I wasn´t exactly lazy ... but live and jobs got the better of me... till my health got the better of me even more... well... as I am still upright but need something to do with my hands i have started yet again with something new...
the cool kids say the printing machines are all the wow nowadays... so I got me a tool too... a filament printer... but me being somewhat of a tech idiot, I have´nt yet figured out what to do with it... all my tries went for the bin... (main problem is probably leveling of the bed and bed adherence...) this at least got me half a year of no productivity alone...
but seeing all of you with new shiny stuff here and there and sources like ebay and etsy all around soon rekindled the flame... if the idiot can´t print, others are able... so I got me some new toy soldiers nevertheless...
games waorkshop sadly never produced something remotly resembling my ideas... but stl´s from really creative peoples do... thus is started to get insprired by products of stationforge... and especially the grim guard...
here I even found standing at attention guardsmen... and marching ones too... and a plethora of more yet to be bought....
and since these "stationary" models need a good and fitting backdrop I built a diorama base to honor them!
but see for yourself, note, painting the base is yet to start, but half of my newly aquired forces are already painted (almost finished too ):
The whole thing is meant to be a bigger imperial base entrance... everything made from styrodur and polysterol foam... cut with hot wire table etc...
Lovely to see you back old son! I think some others on patrol, maybe a shiny tank to proclaim the emperor's glory, a sneaky spy lurking in a corner, some arbites telling a couple of juves to move along... That sort of thing
the models for this diorama are from a creative team called "station forge" saw there stuff of myminifactory.com for quite a while and then recently the minis poped up on ebay as printing agents sell their licensed stuff there... they have a big range of grim guard minis. also nearly as big a range of mechanicus and goblins and orks too... rencently the started with notmarines too...
well... currently I regard this dio as a finished build, so now I have started the painting phase... looking for a warm and friendly looking official look...
to the two soldiers standing at attention eight more will follow and then ten marching towards them, each group overseen by an officer...
@ graven: intersting suggestions... i need to see... a smalish tank might happen... even a scratch build walker maybe... the arbites and juve idea is alone enough to justify their own scene! (tho the spy thing is really tempting...)
well... update shots:
on the last two pics shown are the bases for the soldiers... once all is completed they should fit on the base snugly...
