Fantastic Vik, so much win. Brilliant design, so many great features. Excellent my friend.
That wire work is still the most brilliant for me, but record able sound it comes in sections. both brilliant features.
Good luck in the comp.

ok...this is shocking....more than a year ago was my last update...tstststs...
well i was not completely lazy...hobby-wise....more to that later...
but for now i want to show you all (for those still following this man´s comings and goings...^^) the "tower of death"...
as we all have seen, the new ´munda is out there... new shiny gangs, and terrain...and rules...well i got my own set of all of the above...but where would be the fun of it all if we only survived and played with what GW has provided us with? right? it would get pretty bland pretty soon...
so the message here is clear, at least for me and some selected few...making your own cool looking terrain sets to play gang wars ...
recently...read that as five years ago, i found a used smaller cable drum...and this together with foam sheets and foamboard and lots of cardboard will be the foundation of a hopefully cool terrain piece...if not the centre piece of a ´munda table...
oh...and the cool twist of the tower of death is...: it is mounted on a turntable...so it will be accessible from all sides all of the time...just with a litte twist of the turntable...cool, eh?
well i talked enough for now...picture time it is of now:
turntable in a foam "nest":
cable drum on top of it all...:
then with added platforms...i think the pics speak for themselves:
this all is very early...much changes still to happen and many crossroads probably on the way.... think of adding ladders, maybe stairs even, on top will probably be some buildings, landingplatform etc...lots of railing, hazard stripes and rivets...zillions of it^^...
´nuff said^^
cheers, vik
oh and welcome to 2018...

Good to see you back at the building.
There better be a Bruce Lee reference in there somewhere.
Also, consider (if you haven't already) a final floor at the top of that stair that spans around to the hole in the top (side of the spindle) and then a ladder up through that hole to get to the roof.

well...to be honest...i will probably not be able to actually "play" a ruleworthy game of ´munda in the foreseeable future...but if that piece of terrain sees a bit of playing with with my kids...then every brush stroke was worth it...and my son felix is already edgy as heck to work with me and later on play with this set...

currently the mojo is flowing...as mentioned above my son is kindling the fires too...he has lots of ideas too...
can´t really say if munda is good or not...old munda or new munda, come to that, but i like that setting, that close quarter fighting, the gang making... so many oportunities for cool looking models...and with little to none restrictions...so double wielding bolters or lasguns or shotguns...^^ happy times for gun nerds^^

had to look that one up doc...didn´t watch that many Lee movies...i´m the generation of van damme for better or worse
the upper platform is a definite given that this will be used...either as a landing platform...or for that matter as a smallvillage worth of shacks and huts i am currently looking for good and easy ways to do stairs and ladders...with not too much effort...
CommissarKhaine wrote:Good to see you back at it. Lovely start to a huge piece of terrain, following
it is it appears somehow impossible for me to do small terrain...or tanks...somehow i always end up with huge projects...seems i have to compensate for something....
so....to keep this thing here rolling...it needs continuously to be updated...which is why...i present to you...support:
note: the whole build currently is still loosely stuck together...so it will later on be glued in place...my son suggested it to be able to have moving platforms...but this would mean the support columns would have to go...but the foam-board wouldn´t be that sturdy enough to hold metal minis...so a stationary approach is needed here... as you can see, in the relative middle i added a widened platform to use up all that empty space...
doc H ´s idea with the almost full final floor is something i need to think about... currently i have used up all foam-board atm... so i need to get me supplies for that first...
also...to later on not kill myself i need to build it in sections that i can then paint separately...so watch this space here...definitely more to come..
cheers, vik

As an idea for ladders.
Take 2 long rods and drill through them at intervals. The uprights. Square or strips can be easier to drill through.
Push lengths of thinner rods through the holes from one to the other. The rungs.

I have some wire-bending pliers that make a perfect little 90 degree curve when bent around it. you could make up a bunch of them, then drill some holes or glue them on like rivets. Wire would be heavier tho

thought about handrails...it´s a tough decision...for to be convincing...yes, for access...hmmmm, not sure...everything is still highly WIP but the concept is strong even if it has still way too much flexibility...
bigger is better unless we are talking continents...er...north america thus is less good than europe?...hmmm

i do own some ...a handful so to say... but i treasure these...i am an old miser^^...and since i have three levels...that would cost way too much in bits...^^

Syro_ wrote:That spiral tower is looking good, very sci-fy. I'm looking forward to seeing it as you continue to work on it. Do you have any pics of that sweet game table you made with a battle happening on it?
since the whole table was built, it has been not the time again to set the table for a game... well...when i say game i man the kids using the warhammer stuff to their own devices...they´ve developed their own rules...quite flexible ones which are akin to cheating...er roleplaying^^
SOOOOOOOOO......time for an update...lil ole me got a bit self unconscious about my work... so i often build without posting...and decisions were made...
the spiral tower went through some conceptual changes...now it has three levels...two floors i will insert, this means then i wanted to build nine walls with bulkheads and doors...my own design rather than something GW would do...but it has been riveted already to some extent...
here is what it all looks now, but everything is still loose...held with pegs...
see?.... what now needs to be discussed: i want to make ladders...that reach from floor to floor...manholes?...and should they be open "real" holes or should i built hatches and everything and leave the floor in RL intact?...the floors are two half rings each... currently held together by clamps/pegs...later on they will all be glued together and glued on the lower walls...for support...what do you think? the whole thing is a rather heavily sturdy thing, so no real need to have something that can be taken apart... also the kids are really eager to have it finished...they love the piece already....
originally it was meant as a scratch built lego death star stand in...well...it´s still something like that^^...once finished^^...
also...side news... dunno if i wrote this... last year...i killed my AB compressor...well Santa brought me a new one...small and hopefully quiter...we´ll see...but the tower of death will be the first piece to work with...(hell knows, painting such a big beast i really don´t have the patience to paint it with a mere brush )
cheers, and keep the comments comming...and all forms of discussion is highly sought for!

Good work.
A good way to have multiple hatches that all look functional but are actually flat on the surface is to do one as open and the rest as closed (with floor intact). It gives the impression that they are all covering holes, but you only have to cut one hole.

Tower of Death = Turm des Todes or Totenturm? I know of the Einsteinturm in Potsdam. A seriously cool building.
Go with the hinged hatches for playability's sake. ANd do cover those exposed plywood and foamcore edges with something other than just paint. The piece will look just a bit more polished if you do.
Also, leave slots for catwalks etc to connect to other big buildings.
Very nice so far.

Vik....You have reimagined, the Cobra TerrorDrome and made it better!!
I remember buying mine at the store with my own money, carrying that GIANT box up the the register and plunking down my hard-earned cash!
As for the ladder hatches (YES, now you MUST do ladder hatches) I wouldn't worry about real holes, unless you want to model the hatch open. Just glue two appropriately riveted hatch covers to the board.
Remember this ladder?

so mates....
update time...
red....i´m on it, no bare or ugly materials should be at then end to be seen...hopefully...also, catwalks will happen, they´re planned already and i have two nice salvaged Christmas tree stands that will make excellent catwalk supports...just you wait^^
as for the ladder issue... solved...for good... i went to a hardware store and found some plastic covering mesh for roof gutters...to avoid clogging with leaves... rather cheap and the (for me) excellent width and other measurements for the scale to go as ladders...see below...
dave, your ladders look cool on that tower...but i sometimes have not the patience...then on other moments when i´m in the flow the patience is there to do lots of rivet zen or ladder building...well...every moment creates new opportunities^^
and i loved such playsets too...had the playmobil space station/ ufo soup bowl...loved it for years...
so... pics....
as you can see lights are planned throughout the whole tower...gotta shed some light...right?...
as for the ladders...there is two on each level, and they´re in some sort of tube system... so that means no manholes that can be closed...but a long level to level tube...or maybe not... the ladders are still separate, so everything is still possible^^...god i have to decide...
the middle beam...the main spool "thing" is now covered to look like concrete...hope that is convincing enough... rough concrete...
also... on a not too shabby side note here:
the 25th LoeR terrain competition is on...hosted my Syro...who won with exceptionally cool looking DnD vault furniture set (what a small word for such huge amount of items....)
well...the theme is war efforts...something to battle for...either to keep it or to take it...
https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/751255.page
well... i need to challenge myself with something i kept myself away from...casting...
i think to come up with new ideas and new looks i need to broaden my horizons...its still giving me the willies...but the first tries came out not too bad...
the idea is to have a stash of amo or whatever made mostly from casts made from chocolate and praline packagings...stuff you find after you gulped down the sweets...mostly oily and lightweight stuff which with you can´t really scratchbuild without too much hassle...but nevertheless is looking way too promising... ergo...using it as molds...
well...here you can see what my first mold to be was:
and then i filled it with cheap plaster...
i find that the outcome was not that bad... also i had some other "molds" used already as seen in the outcome pic which looked promising...and after a quick search in the kitchen we found even more promising ones...unfortunately we had to empty them first...yummy^^ with the spidey homecoming movie too on dvd^^...well... tomorrow more to this endeavour...

Vik, thanks for the kind words and the exposure for the newest LoER terrain contest. I'm hoping lots of people will join in. I already commented in the contest thread about you're work, but I'll do it here too, those cast pieces look surprisingly good and I can't wait to see more of what you do with them.
