Welcome to the 20th round of the League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain Competition. Noise pollution
Welcome, one and all, to the 20th round of the League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain contest.
For those who have not taken part before, this is a competition about terrain building (as you may have gathered from the title), but it is not strictly limited to pure terrain, dioramas that can be used as table top terrain are allowed (see rules below). To get a feel for how these competitions run and what to expect you may wish look at the previous rounds, linked below.
Each round has a “theme” or other defining attribute(s) that must in some way be applied to the your terrain project, to compete with other modellers for that most prestigious of prizes, membership into The League of Extraordinary Riveters [LoER].
The competition is open to everyone registered on Dakka Dakka, all are welcome to enter regardless of ability, etc.
The main aim of these competitions is to encourage gamers and model-makers alike to go that extra mile when building terrain that can be used for playing your preferred tabletop wargame (or similar pastime - for example, a board game playing piece would be acceptable). Those taking part can expect to receive ideas, inspiration, encouragement and feedback from each other, and at the end each of the participants is "rewarded" with a new piece of terrain for their own use (that's the thing you just built).
The winner of each round hosts the next round, and the cycle continues.
The theme, limitations, rules, judging and prizes are all the responsibility of the host, although he or she can get help from others for some of those things...
For those who are returning once again to compete a most sincere and heartfelt welcome back!
This round's theme is "Noise pollution".
I want you to interpret this in any way you see fit, but I will be impressed by any interesting, unusual and original interpretation thereof. The main idea is noise on FULL POWER. I think it is something everyone should try. Bonus goes to unusual material use.
You can be in any scale or any system you like. Ideally, your first WIP photo should what you bits and pieces you are starting with, but I'm aware these things evolve organically. Also, it's about being innovative with what you have lying about or can scavenge - but using a kit part for a totally different purpose, or on a different scale, will also be rewarded.
I like to see how people build their models, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this. So please post as many WIP shots as you can. This can achieve more than just keeping me happy (and you want to do that anyway ): Regular posts in this thread will keep it in the public eye and will allow more people to find this contest. Also, if you post WIP shots, others can give you feedback and ideas before it's too late to change it (this will only help you as a participant and we all learn something new).
However, FINAL pictures should not be shown here. This is important for motivation, we are all our own worst critics, and seeing someone's brilliant work should not put us off but it can. I can't stop you posting in your own threads, but please not in here. PM me with the pictures / links instead when they are ready.
One last note on photographs. Please put as much effort into taking photos of your finished model as you have building it. Poorly lit, out-of-focus, blurred, and low resolution photos can harm your chances in any competition. Remember, If I can't see it in the photo, I can't judge it. Only you can hold the model in your hands and turn it around to see everything. Make sure everything you want me to see is in the photos. Thank you.
If you build special terrain(like with functional mechanical parts) a video how it works, will be great.
Rules:. 1: Talk about fight club the Competition. Tell everyone. Post it in your blogs. Add the banner to your signature.

change all the "{" to "["
It should look and work like this one:
2: Must be completed by the deadline. And when I say "must", I mean "about". There is a fair amount of leeway given in these contests but assume there will be no extensions and we'll cross any problems when it arises.
The Deadline is 11 weeks which makes it midnight BST 11.11.2016 Which I believe is 19:00 EST or 16:00 PST!
But anything on that night through to midday will be accepted so that those of you living in the past can keep going until bed time.
3: Your piece should be scratch-built or heavily converted. Model kit parts can be used, especially if used in an unusual way, but you will get more points for something you sculpt yourself, so keep that in mind. Unconventional parts are highly recommended in addition to those you will be using as part of this competition.
4: Your model should be a piece of terrain or a diorama that can be used for gaming purposes. It cannot be a playable model in itself (a crashed tank must stay crashed), but removable models (people) are fine.
5: Any scale, any setting and any gaming system are welcome. A nice mixture of fantasy, sci-fi, historical, or modern will make this contest all the more interesting. If you don't play a game, that's fine too; just make a display piece, but keep rule 4 in mind.
6: The women are right, size doesn't matter. You can make as small or as large a model as you want. Bear in mind the time-scale and don't bite off more than you can chew. We've all made that mistake!
7: Final Entry: Six or more photos of your final entry, showing top, front, both sides, back and all the important parts - not to be posted in this thread. PM me with links to your galleries, albums, etc. As I said above, please take the time to take the best photos that you can.
Together with your photos, I would like a statement of the items (a photo would be ideal) that you used. This is not a must, but would be helpful.
Feel free to include some fluff or an explanation of the model/setting to allow the rest of us to fully appreciate your work.
8: AMBITION: Push yourself. Try something new! Always wanted to use leds? Go for it! Fancied weathering powders? Here's your chance! I'll be looking at your galleries for previous work, entries etc. I want everyone to feel that their best has a fair shot at this. This is very important, I did not expect to win the last round because most peoples work was such great work and many had pushed themselves way more than I did, so this will have a lot more wait for me this round. Another words it might not be the BEST model that wins, but the one that has shown themselves to have pushed that envelope.
9: Not so much a rule, but it wouldn't be the League of Extraordinary Riveters if there are no rivets. This also means similar small details are highly valued (rivets are the best example of this level of detailing).
10: Sprue. Find a use for the often discarded wonder material and bonus points will be yours.
11. Small bonus for being small, I have repeatedly seen amazing large pieces being made, and am guilty myself of such, however so many fall by the way side because the thing grows arms and legs and runs away with time. So a small bonus will be awarded to those who can give me a piece on a CD or less. This is not a hard and fast rule. See Rule #6 for size matters.
12. THE RULE OF COOL trumps all.
If you are unsure of anything just ask away.
Judging: Modelling: 45 points total. (10 points) Skill and Techniques - No mould lines, gaps or rough edges (that are not meant to be rough). Show that you know the difference between a hobby knife and a spatula.
(5 points) Originality - You could have built anything, what did you choose?
(10 points) Materials - Choice of Ordinary items (ease of use / ambition / originality). Scratch-building Vs. recycled materials parts.
(5 points) Little details - Rivets, eggs, and other small details that add realism to the piece.
(5 points) The wonder material - Use of Sprue in is own right not just as a hidden support structure. Good, new and original use of sprue.

(5 points) Size bonus: If you can keep it under a CD in base size, you could get a "little" bonus.
100 points total.
Yes, there is more emphasis on modelling than painting. And Ambition points are there becuase I want to reward folk who go the extra mile on this.
Prizes: 1st Prize.
Membership to the League of Extraordinary Riveters as top prize. You will be allowed to fly the League's banner and be recognised as a modeller devoted to Rivets.
People's choice: As voted for by your fellow Dakkanauts.
Warm feelings inside and the bragging rights that your peers love your work.
Judges:
Camkierhi
Inmygravenimage and DrH will be joining the judges circle for this round. Tough crowd guys and dolls.
So, go to it people. Get extraordinarily building!
Ok folks! some bla, bla, bla for beginning, now back to theme.
Noise pollution
What you can imagine about it?
really loud proclamator tower, xenos destroying morale again and again with device creating noise sound.
(big automata drums for Orks .... )
Diorama where we can see, destruction power of noise.
You really ask why I choose this one? Because i want you ALL PUSH to something extraordinary functional. Is like wonder, when you put your terrain on table, and this small piece start making NOISE. (music, special sound to actual action, etc)
I mean all have smartphone.(or similar device)
For smartphone you can buy item called bluetooth speaker.( cheapest ones cost under 10$...)
Imagine and make working NOISY terrain from it....
(build speaker into terrain.Yes, waterproof bluetooth speakers sell under 10$ too ^^ )
You can find it on large E-marts, like DX.com, Aliexpress.com, ebay, for sure is selled in your town(maybe a bit higher price...)
What are you waiting for? LET's make !!!!!!! NOISE !!!!!!!!! on table of silence
Automatically Appended Next Post: Don't know If i can join competition. (I don't have enough exp for judging, For me anyone win, who can sucesfull finish this in time)
It does not matter.
I devise this crazy idea, so I must lead as example.
I'm not entirely sure about this one. I might let it stew for a while, see if anything pops into my head- but I have class now, so I might decide to just focus on that alone.
I actually ordered a sound module...so soldering might enter my hobby task agenda...speaking of comfort zones...the only thing I have zero clue is what sound would fit to what terrain piece...?
I feel as if I won the noble prize of modeling....found my idea for my entry...I found in my junk box an old mc donalds toy from the kids club menu...it's of an old bike/sledge...and has a nasty sound function...combined with some scratch building this will make a really cool piece...
I will be traveling in Europe, I won't be home until late Oct, that only gives me 3 weeks to whip something up. Maybe MAYBE I can enter something small to participate xP
We mere mortals are but disciples to his cause.THE RIVET.
For those who are uninitiated, and have yet to gain the divine knowledge, dsteingass is the founder member of our glorious League and all should bow before him, his works are the inspiration behind so many of our endeavours.
And he makes a very good point, last round the entries were amazing and it was ridiculously hard to judge them, but one thing I noticed, the distinct lack of rivets.
With this in mind I am calling all the League to the challenge, no matter how far back you go, no matter how long it has been, and no matter what else you are doing, us riveters need to unite and show just what a wonderful thing a well done rivet is, lets show what it means to be a member of the greatest League ever!
So I say to you, shout it out, lets see you stand and be counted. Riveters we need you.
Oh and don't forget to be noisy while your at it! Tek has given us a great idea to run with, lets see some action.
oh well now I'm kicking myself!!...just noticed this thread the day I finished my ork goff rockers/rockwagon project!...wish I'd known this was coming up! I would've done a terrain-piece stage or something instead/as well! ...ah well, I don't think I'll be taking part in this one, I just spent basically the past month on a big "noisy" project, not sure if I have another one in me yet!
I'll be watching though, looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with! "sounds" like an interesting theme!
here's a pic of my band anyway, to cheer you all on
Interesting ideas all. I'm thinking a scale model of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-- with a few adjustments, so that it is playable terrain. Time permitting. Hobby time has been scarcer than hen's teeth these past few months.
Okay so hears my idea, and start. A wreaked tank turned commissar hut, pulpit. It'l have steps leading up to the address pulpit, a little shack to enlarge the quarters in the tank. A entrance in the side with some tarpaulin action and i'ma cover in propaganda posters because what speaks louder than words. (but really i just wana make some ).
everything you here see was made firstly from pine wood sticks...the construction is really sturdy...
after this much further work went in the build and i added a wire fence by using sewing thread, match sticks and later on cardboard and of course rivets...and a brass angle too....also...since the comp requires something to make it sound^^ i got me a small and cheapo chip and micro setup that allows to record and play ten seconds worth of "noise"...
and this is where everything is atm...:still unpainted but riveted...:
also...this is an aquilla made by Camkierhi....excellent work and it helped me for ages...all my own eandeavors to fabricate something like that looked way too feeble...:facepalm....thanks agaiin Cam!!!
by now you probably guessed it right....it is a dice tower....^^
hope you like...
cheers, vik
More work on my sonic emitters for the defense barrier.
Rivets of course!
[/img]
shrouded connectors that also protect the wiring to the emitters, they will help with connecting the emitters to the pylons.
[/img]
Pretty much what will be seen as they point to overlap their sonic disruption fields that are to stop many xenos hoards and other intruders.
[/img]
Of course I will have to add access to controls for the pylons at their base where the soldiers with the keys can open and turn the fences off for a short time to allow a patrol to pass through. Of course a remote access fob will be used to get back inside, just in case the intruders are smart enough to access a control box. So control box is on just one side.
Don't forget that speakers use cones to direct the sound. I mean, Orks and all, but a flat surface is less visually appealing as well as being a little less accurate.
Feat yer eyes on this all! Been said that Madness can inspire inspiration and maybe perspiration. Been awake a while now in the mad fever grip of the past to make ideas into reality!!!
Bases of the pylons are set for rivets, and now loo at how they grow! And a volunteer for size comparison!
[/img] [/img]
looks super...nice riveting effort love the spikes on top...ties them in with the 40k universe so much better!
but one question tho...did you integrate actual sound to the models? or is it intended to represent a "sounding" piece of terrain but staying quiet? both i think is a viable entry...just checking^^
Very nice looking, well-riveted. I can see game-wise, where your small team needs to take out the guards in different areas before they can make it to the "sound alarm" button, bringing in reinforcements.

Hey Vik! Thank you btw!
Sadly, no electronics or time to wire those up, so a static model for looks with the assumed ruling of a noise effect. Spikes will also be colored to represent low flight avoidance beacons. I wish I could have made the things with a set of micro-screamers for cool effect!

Thanks Dave. That would make a neat scenario for a kill team mission for sure!
I carved out the speaker hole, and filled it in with spackle. Looks more like a speaker cone now. Need add back the center bit (dust cap) before I can start painting.
stonned_astartes wrote: @shas Really does look like the lost pic now with that ivy effect, very nice.
Well, thank you, I am hoping to do well enough all things considered, and at least I managed that effect of long lost pylons like in the show Lost, but 40k wise!
All looking brilliant. Those look amazing Shas really hit the spot. Great work on the weathering. I am close to done, so no pics but I might put some bits together, good luck everyone
Just 3 shown, but they are part of a longer fence like set up where the system can detect movement from outside the barrier, and if something attempts to cross between the pylons, they emit a ear shattering, gut liquefying, lethal sonic burst in waves, repeated until the subject is down, or the commands are given to halt the sonic attack. Here we see that the plant life is trying to reclaim the devices and make them into part of the world.

As Judge, my terrain is only for inspiration others. So they can see, is possible to finish in short time Sonic tower is finished. Next day I make video how it ROCK's
Spoiler:
Guys come'on, end is near. Want see finished pieces. I have only one entry, don't make easy for him If you need few time more write it.
I hang my head in shame...due to dumbness and the inability to read my calendar...I am now with a short supply of time for painting... so...if a wee bitty bit of more time till the deadline rolls...I would be able to finish my piece...pretty puhlease?
Making good progress on my entry. Not quite done yet. I want to add some Ork glyphs to the sides. Ran out of time today. Hopefully finish it off tonight.
Close to the finishing line...sealed the tower of mine...walls need some small minute working steps...and I want to add/try out something new I found at pinterest...
Da Big Amp.
Excellent piece of usable terrain, either as terrain or objective marker, A very large amp, inspired by the opening scene in Back to the Future. Glyphs read "BIG AMP"
Viktor von Domm:
Dice Tower.
Excellent piece of usable terrain, that doubles up as a dice tower with actual sound, including the ability to record. Awesome.
oh and since this is a competition about sounding terrain pieces...he made a video...uploaded it to you tube...here it is:
Shasolenzabi:
Sonic Defence Towers.
Excellent pieces of terrain, which can also be used as objective markers or even a narrative for a scenario.
stonned_astartes:
Propaganda Outpost.
Awesome piece of usable terrain. Could be used as objective as well. Atmospheric setting with red mud to match his armies basing.
Camkierhi:
Waaagh! Tower.
Diorama possibly usable as an objective marker.
Cleatus: Like it. Fun piece, good reference. I like how you did the centre of the speaker with the wires, look just right. Like the dials on the amp too.
Vik': I commented over in your thread. Love the functionality of it.
Shas': Good concept, nice design. Good work on the weathering/plants.
stonned_astartes: Nice build. Good story to the piece.
Camkierhi: I'm fairly sure I've commented over in your thread... Lovely piece. Lots of story, lots of details. Great work.
Good luck to all, and to Tek for the work of judging.
i hope TEk is all right...no pressure, but i would like to know who won so that the next round might start...(i am in need of a new project...and inspiration is currently at it´s lowest^^)
Thank you all, was a tough contest, by my own criteria, others where better than mine. Thank you Tek, I know it was difficult for you, but well done, nice theme and great comp.
