Welcome to the 20th Unofficial Painting Challenge here on Dakka! Each month, entrants use these challenges as motivation to get painting, push their skills, clear their backlogs and get feedback from the amazing P&M community here. Anyone is free to enter, whether this is your first model or your thousand and first!
This month, the theme is 'Something Wicked This Way Comes'. As ever, this is open to interpretation, so whether your idea of wicked is a cackling witch, a shambling zombie, a lurking alien or anything else spooky, scary or creepy, it's in!
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 4 images and one separate image would count as your 5 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st October and will end at midnight GMT on the 31st October. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
How about some kind of Necromunda/Stealer Cult conversion thingamajig, proper Blanche-esque? Might be a nice challenge for you to take on a different style, and would fit the theme perfectly.
I was thinking of trying to sculpt something but I'd get to stressed out due to how much stuff i need to get done and how much time work is tasking up these days so will just do some chaos guys.
Paradigm wrote: How about some kind of Necromunda/Stealer Cult conversion thingamajig, proper Blanche-esque? Might be a nice challenge for you to take on a different style, and would fit the theme perfectly.
Oh, how I would love to. I don't really have any conversion skills yet, and probably wouldn't be able to make something good in a month :(
I am leaning towards doing a unit this time. Either my Genestealer Aberrants or a unit of 5 Scavvies. I'll keep rummaging around in my boxes to see if I have anything else a little better.
Have you thought what you will be doing?
And Jan, looking forward to seeing you do some guildball!
No idea on my end yet. There are a few Carnevale minis that I'm waiting to come back into stock that would fit perfectly, but there's no ETA on those yet so I doubt I'll manage to get those in time...
Likewise, I've got another Joker and Harley Quinn coming at the end of the month like last year, but they're also not likely to get here on time unless they're dispatched earlier.
I might see if the local GW has the Cairn Wraith or Wight King in stock next time I'm down there, I've been wanting those two for a while and did do some pretty successful test-paints for my planned Undead last month... We shall see...
It's either them or whatshisname from Inq54. Mutant fella. My prizes from the Eavier Metal comp arrived the other day so I have the werewolf queen by Michael Kantaros to paint. But I think that'll be saved up till I've got skin painting a little better down.
Any you folks ever watch the streams on Twitch?
Time to clear a random mini off the back of the bench!
Chammady Drovenge. One of the bad guys from the Council of Thieves Pathfinder adventure path. Mini belongs to a friend, who ran it, and just fielded her unpainted for the fight (where we punked her is no time) Asked if I would slap some paint on the mini when I got around to it. So here we go...
I was really struggling to think of a "halloween-y" model in my possession, but thanks to the slightly more open title, and somebody mentioning Genestealer Cult, I suddenly remember I have a bunch of unpainted Space Hulk genestealers. They're definitely wicked and unless you've very lucky they're definitely coming your way!
I think i'm going to do another Harlequin character for my Harlequins. A little boring because I submitted my Shadowseer last month, but whatever - progress on my Harlequin army is a plus! Death Jester it is.
Going to do another conversion this month with a bunch of Khorne bits lying around in the ol' box. I'm going to try and dig out all the most demonic stuff I can find, as well as sculpt something Halloween-y for a base. Here's the proof with the bits I'll be using:

I don't recognise the legs, where are they from?
They're just bloodletter legs, the bloodletter had been assembled, so I chopped him off about midway up the torso to leave the two legs intact. In the spirit of Halloween, I'm planning to add some hooves and fur to them with greenstuff to give him a more traditional biblical style demon feel, rather than the over-the-top fantasy monster type of thing bloodletters usually have going on.
Oh, if harlequins are in, I will definately be putting one (or more) up! Good excuse to get started painting them. I'll have to figure out which ones I want to work on...
And I might throw the Black Plague partially painted model on as a stretch goal for myself. Just so I actually finish him... because leaving a model half painted is bad for my painting mojo... Black Plague has been sitting about half done for a few months now...
Btw, thank you for putting this whole thing on Paradigm. It has really been helping me keep my motivation up
Good luck everyone, looking forward to seeing the Halloween inspired entries
I've been thinking about this a fair bit over the last few days to work out what to enter, I did want to do some more Ork Star Wars but that doesn't sit with the theme quite right.
Currently my 2 favourite options are an Ork puppet Master (dressed as a gentleman Ork) controlling a grot (dressed as Chucky) or since theres been a lot of talk about them recently an Ork Genestealer cult. I'll post a proof when I deciede
For the third month in a row - I'm out :( But I guess my honeymoon is a great reason to not be able to paint much this month Hopefully I'll be back in for the November challenge!
Buttery - hope you're feeling a little better and good luck with your dragon second time round
Midget - an Ork/Grot Chucky mini would be awesome. Always love to see your conversions.
Hmm...y'know, I'm actually not sure if I'll be entering this one ...my laptop's gak'd itself, some video driver issue or something...bluescreens within 5-10 mins of booting up ...so I'm not really sure how I'd even go about posting pics now...also, there's just nothing really jumping out of my pile at me to be painted for this theme...eh I dunno...I might figure something out in a week or two, we'll see
Since the theme is scary stuff, how about these Kroot:
These guys have a ritual of eating their victims after a battle, which is actually pretty scary gak. My intention is to paint all of these, then cherrypick the five best ones and post that as my entry. We'll see if it works out that way.
As an aside, its funny that I was lamenting not having Lost Patrol and those Genestealers, but yesterday I picked up that game and now have those models. Oh well, I'd still rather do Kroot as they fit in with the rest of my models better.
Trying to figure out what ork or blood angel thing I can do for this challenge which will advance the 'completeness' of my army and I cant think of anything. So as a bit of a change from my norm I enter a pansy space elf. I only have it as a friend came round a few weeks ago and gave me a bad of metal harlequins...
Awwwwwwwwwwwww - damn - that's gonna be awesome sauce. where the fig from.
Got my eadbanger prizes through the other day. One of the figs totally made me think of you - Kromlech's Handmaiden of Pain
Well, I have the Harlequin jetbike face on the way...and sadly a hurricane on the way as well. Assuming my house isn't destroyed and I don't lose all my models I will try for the Harlequin dread.
Where did you get him? He looks absolutely awesome! I cannot wait to see him all painted up! It sounds so thematic and wonderful! The grey-scale would depict the drab and somber settings of his stories so well, with the lantern that little spark of beautiful madness that lights the way...
Oh dear ... sorry, I got a little excited there. ...I'm maybe a bit of a Lovecraft buff... so, so, so excited to see him. I had no idea anyone made a Lovecraft model
Looking forward to that one, keezus, looks full of character. Likewise, BC, can't wait to see what you do with that one, should be a standout entry to say the least!
I'm in as well. I was a little stumped at first, as I don't have any minis to hand that really fit the scary/spooky/creepy theme going on this month, but then I had the idea of reversing it, trying to imply that sort of feeling without it actually being represented in miniature form. Thus, we come to this, a lone Deathwatch Terminator, isolated and alone in the bowels of a Space Hulk, acutely aware that something is coming from the darkness...
Spoiler:
Proof
Not final pics, the light here is not great and I need to experiment some more, but I could use some feedback all the same!
Very nice! (I was originally thinking of trying something similar until someone mentioned Harlequins were allowed.)
I am having problems getting too close of a look at him (dakka is refusing to allow me to zoom), but he looks great and the atmosphere is coming through really well. I have always found Marines to portray a bit too much power and surety to be honest though, so maybe a little combat damage would help portray the sense of dread even more - bringing the unseen lurker closer and implying it is just off the base about to finish the job? Or that it just moved through and took out the rest of his squad and now he can only wait for it to come back?
Btw, the shoulder pad on the floor is a nice touch. Kind of implies that the mangled mess is one of his friends. I like it.
Cheers, As mentioned, I'll get some better pics, I'm still trying to figure out the best lighting setup in my new flat.
That mangled mess is one of his friends, sadly I buried the Termie under too much Nid Slime, but you can just about make out his helmet to the right of the pad on the bottom right pic.
Ah! I see it now. Very awesome. I think the black hides him a bit - at least to me, his shoulder pad sticks out because of the color difference from the gore, but I like the subtleness of it. That way ups the creep factor though! It looks like he's protecting his friend's corpse. I love it!
My Diorama entry. Im gonna have a World Eater slowly advancing towards two wounded scouts, probably taking place some time after the Scouring. Dunno what Loyalist Chapter I should use, though...
Midget - an Ork/Grot Chucky mini would be awesome. Always love to see your conversions.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, I had a lot of ideas come into my head on that one, was thinking of making the Ork nob on a stage above the grot Chucky, connecting the strings, maybe a downlight giving OSL with the outskirts of the light circle dark and dingy. However I don't think I'll be able to give the time this month to do that idea justice so have opted for the Ork Genestealers instead.
Have fun on your honeymoon, will be good to see your entry in Nov when you get back
Spent the day working on my submission. Ended up finishing my entry. Another addition to my Harlequin army. This Death Jester turned out really nice - really happy with it. I think it's my best Harlie yet - i'm getting the technique down.
I'm torn between painting the Hellbrute from Dark Vengeance, which is a fantastic model, and one I've been meaning to paint for ages, or painting a 30-year-old Ratman model I found. The ratman is from before GW even came up with the name Skaven, and I think was one of the very first batch of models Jes Goodwin ever designed for GW.
So something of historical value, or something big and impressive? What do you guys think I should paint?
I finished up my brood lord. Used too many shades from GW... The highlights all were toned down, as well as the OSL effect on his back... It will have to do, though, still working on Contemptor, and last Cataphractii. Gonna have a good diorama piece to go with it...
Im just worried that my diorama wont be bright enough. I forget that you cant spraypaint mdf and had to undercoat it by hand, so the black turned out much richer than the GW chaos black... Almost done, though.
Is that Space Wolf shouting, "Come at me bro!" Kustomer?
Fantastic work, it looks amazing. Great paint job, and that is a base and a half!
Here's my proof picture(s). I still don't know which one to paint. It's 3-1 to the Hellbrute, but Jan put four exclamation marks on his Ratman vote, so that seems to carry more weight...
Hellbrute
or maybe Ratman.
Am I completely breaking the rules by not deciding yet?
What is this thread doing on page two? Here's a quick progress update to bump it.
and...
Spoiler:
Januine, that is such a brilliant idea, but I don't know if I have time to create any sort of scenic base for it, and it would be an odd diorama to have to explain to people who saw it in the future.
Nice Work KD, looks very good especially for your first Space Wolf, the amour looks good and you have got the skin to look like skin. Hard to pick any points for C & C, from a personal point I like to bold highlight the ridges in joins in the amour to give it a bit of contrast so its not just a black mass which is something you might consider.
The berserker looks like an interesting combination of parts Queen Ann, looking forward to seeing it painted
Go Feltmonkey, I'm sure you can come up with a story as to why both of those models can be entered at the same time
Some good stuff coming in folks. I've barely even started mine!! Trying to get some other bits finished up first. Hopefully get a move on this week. Discovering that painting while streaming is a lot slower than when not. Still, fun is fun
nice entries so far,
I've not got too much done but below is my WIP. I've spend more time working on his base than the model and I've been busy painting up some models for my friends Imperial assault game. Still plenty of time though =)
I know I'm a bit late, but I'll try to finish up one or more of this set of 5.
Proof:
I kind of got sidetracked by my stretch goal and finished him first. I would have entered him, but he was already half painted from a few months ago. Btw, still messing with my camera settings. Did these ones come out less blurry in your guys' opinions? The camera seems to take better pics with the flash on for some reason. I dislike the shadow showing myself, so I am going to play with my lights to try to get it to be less drastic.
Nice work on finishing your entry Elbows, a very menacing Grin.
Red Ink Cat. Flash can change the colour or make parts glare but those Pics of Death look pretty good, you can see all the detail. Keep experimenting until you find what you like, are you using a phone or proper Camera?
My entry is slowly coming together, as always, Bases done and some paint on the models now. Trying to go for a system of painting that can be rolled out across a unit/ several units rather than very slow individual painting I normally do.
It is a full camera, but it is starting to get a bit old.
Now that I go back and look at it, that makes a lot of sense, especially since the flash appears to have turned the background paper yellow. I guess I may just have to add a new camera to the list of things to buy... darn it
You can also try auto-adjusting the white levels using Photoshop/GIMP or other photo-editing software. I have to auto-adjust my whites on almost every picture I take.
Not sure what type of settings you have on your camera if its an old one Red Cat but these articles may also help, I tend to post them up every few months it seems when someone asks about photos since they helped me.
Thank you for those. I will have to take a look at my camera when I get home and see if it has the right settings. I have been toYing with the idea of getting a lightbox recently; I think this just solidifies how necessary it is.
Edit: my camera does have the required settings! It was just hidden in the last place I looked. It is also thankfully 8.1 Megapixel, so it should be ok to keep using. The delay trick is probs going to be the most helpful - I think that is the main cause of the blur, but the lightbox set I am looking at also comes with a tripod, so that should help.
Edit: I had no idea how little I knew about photography. Thank you for the help!
I've made a bit of progress, but I'm not convinced I'm going to finish the Hellbrute, so I may end up entering the Ratman after all. I've been hampered a bit by a persistent cold that refuses to go away, and leaves me a bit too tired to paint to my best ability in the evenings. I get shaky hands at the best of times, and it's worse when I'm not well.
Still, at least I've continued my tradition of getting my excuses in early!
Keep going feltmonkey, yeah get whatever you can finished, that cold seems like a pain.
Welcome Godfiend, good to have you onboard, this competition has motivated me to paint things and try strange ideas out for the last year and a half, the people here have also taught me a great deal.
I've got a couple of poll suggestions:
Ultimate Badasses: Basically any kind of very powerful model, so very open ended.
The Hunters: This could be interpreted in any number of ways, from an actual hunter tracking an animal to a Tyranid Genestealer hunting Terminators on board a Space Hulk...
How about "Armor"?
Could be tanks, a single unit that is heavily armored, etc...
Full disclosure: I have a big mek w/ kff that I'd love to paint for a comp.
My poll suggestions normally come from what's happening around me so since I'm off to Vienna shortly you could have a "Classical" type theme? (for the Music) or one like "The Architect" (for its buildings)
As kill team is quite new, maybe the different specialists could each be a poll option. I think they are all pretty open to interpretation and would work well across different game systems. Just a thought, I am struggling to think of ideas!
Paradigm wrote: Can't believe we're going into the last week of the month and we're only on page 4! Are you all on holiday? Let's get some more pretty pics in here!
The month did slip on by. It looks like we have about the normal number of entrants listed on the first page. Guess everyone is plotting and scheming wickedly from the shadows this month.
Quick progress update to remind everyone that I'm still in this thing:
I've got these four Kroot all done except for the bases, which will be pretty simple. If a miracle happens, I'll have a few more done before the end of the month, but right now it doesn't look good. I'll take proper photos of these guys after I base them; those pics will be my final entry.
Can't believe we're going into the last week of the month and we're only on page 4! Are you all on holiday? Let's get some more pretty pics in here!
Exact same thought as well.
I'm not sure I'm going to make it myself. I have been sick for the last week and between all the planning for the Halloween party on Saturday and trying to last minute get a costume for the SO done, I do not know if I will even have time to get one of those Harlies painted, much less all five.
I'll join the general chorus of "kinda running behind really..."
Do have a proof and a couple of WIP pics--sadly, plans to do a unit of privateer's werewolf guys foundered on the shoals of low enthusiasm, so I settled for a celtos barbarian/shamany kinda guy. Probably should get on with finishing him up, given the time...
Final pics from me, took about 50 shots then several hours in editing but I think I've finally got something that does it justice. Definitely the most pleased I've been with an entry of mine in quite some time, in terms of both 'getting' the theme and the overall job.
Buttery Commissar wrote:I am okay, but I was in a car accident Saturday. Not gonna lie, I can't sit and paint.
Oh crap. sorry to hear that...

really nice job, love it. I agree one of my favourites of yours. I was going to try and emulate your blood spatters on my skeleton but I never got round to it. May I ask your technique for it?
Midget Gems wrote: I keep trying to get that skeleton signpost on ebay but they always go for far to much, the Green & Blue on the legs look very interesting Mootlet
The base and a bag od metal harlequins were given to me by a friend who bought a few job lots of elder for his army then never painted it. I got about 15 harlequins and bunch of random stuff.. the square base with the birds/gravestone/skeleton came to me as it is seen (unpainted). As a thank you I said I'd paint something up for him and asked him what colour scheme did he want the death jester. So the interesting choice in colours was not my first choice but it was very fun to do, a little bit different. I honestly don't think it works very well but when I take my proper photos I hope the more subtle blend from black through blue to green will come through a bit more.
Not 100% happy, but that’s kida par for the course. Frankly my eyesight and brush control is not really up for detail work at this scale. But here is Chammady Drovenge, Chelaxian Noble:
She loves political scheming, devil worship, and murder plays Turn-offs include anarchy, paladins, and those pesky adventurers.
@Moolet: There's honestly no 'technique' to it, it's just GW's Blood For The Blood God applied in the relevant areas. If there's any skill involved, it's purely working out where the blood could conceivably be and how much is appropriate to the composition, all of which just comes with practice. I'll recommend grabbing a pot of BFTBG, though, it's great stuff!
@BC: Sorry to hear about the accident, hope you're doing OK!
Here are the final pics. I forgot if collages counted as one or multiples. I used it as a device to zoom in on the details, so i am making the argument that it counts as one? If I cant have all of the above please let me know and i will give you the desired formats.
Thanks! I have been working very hard on it.... no i couldnt finish the horse in time for the contest . I didn't want to rush it and produce something sub standard. And i am not going to have enough time in the next few days to add any more.
Lovely stuff! I'm afraid each pic in a collage does count towards the five allowed, so you can either take the collage and one other pic, do 5 individual ones or just do a new collage with the full 5.
Paradigm wrote: Lovely stuff! I'm afraid each pic in a collage does count towards the five allowed, so you can either take the collage and one other pic, do 5 individual ones or just do a new collage with the full 5.
ok i know you mentioned that before but i forgot, so i made my selections! please post these
Hopefully my entry will be a good addition to the ones so far.
Really nice work on the Terrain Tittlemanscrest, took me a while to notice the spider under the rock, I was wondering where it had gone
Your skin tones are always spot on Bottle, Nice Aberrants
Got mine done, I quite liked how it turned out, tthey are different anyway (like most of my oddball creations). I've learnt a few things on arm positioning and washing with other colours which I'll hopefully be able to use in future entries. I wanted to make it look like these models where mostly Orks with some Tyranid showing, (2nd Generation - Hybrid Genestealer) This group of Orks rather likes the extra arms and claws making them more fighty so have chosen to embrace the mutations. Hope you like them anyway
The Killy Klaws Kult........
I'm away for a few days now so will catch up on the voting when I'm back.
Finished up the October entry. Went for something with a Satanic feel in honor of this month's theme/halloween, and built this bad boy on a cork base in the shape of a pentagram. Unfortunately I was unable to get a good picture of the base now that the model's glued on. Oh well.
Nice brushwork and great choice of colours (absurd, I love it). I think the base really detracts from the whole thing though. Admittedly I have a huge bias against gigantic bases (I think it detracts from the lovely Chaos dread up top too!).
Great entries this month. I think it might be the best month ever, in terms of sheer quality. Some fantastic work done by everyone.
I didn't have much time to work on this entry this month. Was barely able to scrape together three sessions in the last few weeks due to starting a new job. I wanted to take my time though, as this bust is so full of character. So here he is... in his unfinished glory... (will get finished proper in the future...)
Just so I can get it in, I am going to have to skip my editing process and hope Dakka's auto-adjust does ok. (It's on my work computer.) If the thread is still open tomorrow (crossing my fingers), I will try to fix the pictures and make them a wee bit better.
Hm, looks like even changing the settings on the camera (does not have an option for exposure time/aperature but can change ISO) does not help with the blur. I even set it to a delayed shot so the button press would jar it less. Well, it is 8 years old at this point...
Well, here are some proper pics of my 4 finished Kroot Carnivores:
I hope you guys like them! I feel like a race of beings that eat their battlefield victims are a very scary thing and thus fit the theme pretty well. They were actually surprisingly fun to paint. I only wish I had had time to paint a few more of them so that I could pick the ones that turned out the best. Oh well. I am looking forward to the voting, as there are some frightfully great entries so far!

Thank you for the comment. Yeah I'm not really satisfied how it turned out. Though I must say that it looks worse in the photos.
Looks like I'm well out of this round folks. Not gonna get my 'entry' finished for another day or two. Stupid RL interfering with hobby. I mean, really?!!!!

I don't think you should feel dissatisfied with it at all - it looks great! The blending on the highlights in particular is amazing, and the colour choices are interesting and create a vibrant model. Elbows' views on large bases shouldn't be taken as gospel.
You mentioned my Hellbrute as well I think, Elbows. I take your criticism of the base on board, but I personally quite like a big base, so I'll probably end up ignoring it, sorry.
It's an interesting discussion point though - what's everyone else's views on larger bases? The Ratman I painted is a nice example. I had it on a little 28mm base at first, but it only really came together when I stuck him on the larger 32mm base. That was the making of the model, for some reason. It added a bit of narrative and atmosphere.
For me, it's less about the base and more about what's on it. That's why I like 32s, you can get just enough on there to lend some context to a mini without needing to have half a Land Radier or a 10-foot pile of corpses glued to it! There's a place for that sort of thing in dioramas and vignette type stuff, but when it's just stuck to the base rather than done as part of a larger scene I find it often detracts, even if it's done really well.
The FW Horus Heresy characters are a good example, some of them come with bases that are just nuts (I think Perturabo is standing on a Knight head... way too much)
My personal preference is for zero base overhang. I like everything to be contained within the limits of the base. After that I like some elevation here and there but not too much.

Cheers mate! Most work was done with glazing. I can't get the hang of wet blending but gazing takes a huge amount of time, well at lest for me.
Really great job on the Hellbrute. Love the crisp photos.
