Subject: Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge Round 21 November 2016: Heavy Metal!
Welcome to the 21st Unofficial Painting Challenge here on Dakka! Each month, entrants use these challenges as motivation to get painting, push their skills, clear their backlogs and get feedback from the amazing P&M community here. Anyone is free to enter, whether this is your first model or your thousand and first!
This month, the theme is 'Heavy Metal'. This basically covers everything that's bringing a lot of armour, from a Paladin in full plate mail to a Spartan Assault Tank. If it can take a beating, it's the kind of thing we want to see this month!
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 4 images and one separate image would count as your 5 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st November and will end at midnight GMT on the 31st November. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Hey Para, is it alright if I enter my Predator conversion?
It's technically only primed and base coated blue, so meets the rules, but it feels a bit cheeky having a base coated tank! Having said that I do only have two weeks before I go on holiday to get it finished.

I’m going to start out with my Honor Guard chapter champion with thunderhammer.
Depending if I can get mold lines cleaned and a good day to prime (which is very sketchy at this time of year) I might swap my entry to the tartaros terminator sergeant I’ve got tacked together at the moment.

Don't worry, I'll compensate for you by starting with a Land Raider that needs its previous paint removing first! I'm clearly over-committing but I didn't want to miss another month! Pics to follow tonight.
Dark Angels/Deathwing - just getting started!
Space Marines - Stark Crusaders 4500pts/PL244 (2700pts painted)
Eldar - Biel Tan 2000pts
Space Wolves 1500pts

These are the only really heavy units I'll have this month but I'd already based, washed and dry brushed when the poll was chosen. Would they still be acceptable?
G'day...now see, I've had a stompa sitting around for about 2 years now...I've made a couple of starts on it, but never got close to finishing it...currently, it's primed, sprayed silver, and has a smattering of panels based in red, white, yellow, blue, brown and olive...is that too much pre-work done on it to enter it as-is?...I mean, there is 7 colours on it already I guess, but then it is huge, with a lot more work to go...
If it is too much to go as-is, that'd be fine honestly, I've been contemplating respraying it and going with one of several other possible schemes anyway, so I could just do that if it makes everyone comfortable
Anyway, I want to (at least try to) get him done finally!...and really, what's more "heavy metal" than basically a walking pile of scrap metal/machinery?
Anyway, proof pic...taken and uploaded entirely with my phone, because my laptop's still dead...praying to mork this works!
...it's good to be green!

Okay, this is my entry. It's an original RT Land Raider I've had since I was about 12 (which was really longer ago than I'd like!). I need to strip the paint off, then fix it (I think I tried giving it battle damage, but basically just smashed bits!), then I can start painting it. That's a lot to do in a month for me, but I don't want to miss another month, so I'll give it a shot!!
I doubt I'll be able to take it apart, so I've got to live with 12 year old me's gluing skills :(
It's currently covered in Biostrip. Might get chance to clean it up later tonight.

Is it okay if the interior of my tanks were painted 3 years ago, assembled, primed and now sit with (some) basecoat? I hope so, because I am going to be doing my land raider!
I'm in with these Centurion Devastators:
As you can see I'm going to do the heads separately, as they will be impossible (or nearly so) to get to once glued in. I figure Centurion suits are suitably heavy and metal, huh?
@DAJimmyK: I look forward to seeing those Deathwing Knights. I did some of those as my first ever entry into one of these painting challenges (way back in April 2015). They really are awesome models!
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I'll give this one a shot. I have a few things around I could paint. FWDG Contemptor, centurions, Blood Angels Contemptor, .... . Now to make up my mind.

I'll be painting this Lord of the Rings Cave Troll is rescued off ebay. Just finished paint stripping him. He'll become a Super Mutant Behemoth for my Super Mutant warband for our second local This Is Not A Test campaign.
