Hey Gits (mind if I call you that?), just a question: Would veteran Mantis warriors wear robes?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Well, this is just my opinion here... I don't think that as a matter of standard battle dress, they would wear robes... not really very insectoid if you get my drift. However I could easily see a marine with some special position or ceremonial role having some kind of battle robes. They'd really make him stand out and help to emphasize his special status.

Post by: Ogryn
Thanks, Gits. My brother insists that Mantis warriors look like robed Dark Angels. I showed him pics, but he meant the Veterans. So, I thought I would ask the expert.

Post by: Gitsplitta
Robes are cool, but they are definitely NOT stealthy... and the mantis warriors are a stealth chapter.

A Merry Gitsmas indeed. That's IF I can get my stupid internet to work well enough... right now my internet connection is so tenuous most web pages don't even load correctly, and there's no way I can actually get a picture into the gallery. I must admit to being almost giddy at the amount of progress I've made already... getting both monolith's done in a long weekend was unexpected and they turned out far better than I'd hoped. The other projects are either going faster than I'd anticipated or at the least, no slower... which opens up the possibility of getting even more things done than I'd originally planned. More stuff done means the kids have more options to field and hopefully will have more fun playing. All good!

Wait. You didn't think to stop after the first time? I am on the floor laughing right now because I am imagining the first time you were introduced to an electric fense.
Or maybe you should take a short nap .
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Well, the band aid proved proof against the chisel... then I hit a different finger.
First time I "met" an electric fence I was leaning on it (it was running along a wooden fence post). I leaned on it for a while as the sensation I was feeling made no sense to me what-so-ever (felt like someone was beating on the palm of my hand with a ball-peen hammer). Took me a bit to sort it out.

Post by: wyomingfox
My first encounter with an electric fense was at a horse riding stable with a group of young campers. I was around 10-11 at the time. Like Gits, I happened to lean against a live wire unknowingly and felt a kicking sensation at the heel of my foot. I kept looking around for the culprit, but nobody was nearby. Finaly figured out it was electricity. Then me and my fellow campers started experimenting with the fense by seeing what objects would conduct electricity or forming human chains to determine how far the electricity could pass from one kid to another.

... and on THAT bombshell.... let's move on.
I want to apologize for all of the updates without photographs to support them. I realize that this makes for a very boring P&M blog but given the circumstances (Christmas presents) the pics will have to wait until the 25th.
I completed Thing 1's projects last night. Took a bunch of pics for upload or sharing via e-mail. I really like the way everything's come together. A bit frustrating as when I look at it, it doesn't *seem* like that much new stuff, but it's sure taken a ton of concentrated work to pull off and the end result is looking really spiff. I have one more figure that I'd really like to paint up but I'm just not sure if I'm going to have the time.
Began Thing 2's big conversion project last night. It's unfortunately not going together as easily as I'd hoped, but I am making progress. With luck I'll have the build and GSing done tonight.
Can't believe how much primer, paint and wash I've been going through... today will be my 4th trip to my FLGS since I've started painting these projects to replace supplies.

What 40k stuff do people hope to get for Christmas?? As I said earlier, I haven't asked for any... but I did get myself some dakka dice and have picked up a few things for the boys... On a non- 40k note... I did get a Husqvarna Rancher chainsaw from my dad... a great toy... huge help in putting up firewood for winter. Not quite subtle enough for conversion work though. Enough bits that I could convert amazing pieces
and enough money to hire a commission painter to paint my Cadians and my Warriors of Chaos
I'm pretty set on 40k for a lifetime since I haven't touched a GW model in months...
But I'm sort of stuck more into Warmahordes recently...
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
You know, it's kind of funny for me now that I've gotten to the "more models than I could possibly paint" stage. I kinda don't like it as going to my FLGS or other supplier has lost much of it's luster. I can still get things for the kids on occasion, but frankly they've got more models than they could possibly paint as well. I've got some of the coolest minis and ideas for painting them... just don't know if I'm ever going to get to them. But, as long as I'm painting and not buying... I'm making progress eh? With a bit of luck and some more late nights... there should be major advances in both boys' armies by the new year... which would make me very happy (as well as them, I'm sure).

I might try to get some FW for Christmas, but other than that Im nearly set with everything I'll need for a while.
Back on the topics of electric fences, I first contacted one while playing airsoft-manhunt at a friends while it was dark. I saw him laying prone, and went to make a huge circle around to get behind him (he has sheep on his farm, but I forgot about their electric fences...) so I turned around and sprinted as fast as I could, and I slammed into the electric fence. Not only did I take a huge surge of electricity, the fence sling shotted me and I fell on my back. He had seen this happen and casually strolled over and shot me while I was on the ground

Well, theoretically I now have a back-up compressor (my old one still limps along). The new Grex is working fantastically well though. It's quiet too!

*chuckle* You are so right Lorna...
Well, finished the wings on the Tyrant last night, they're up on my Nid blog if you want to take a look. Advanced the work on three large bases... but I'm getting a bit worried as I'm slowly running out of steam. Even though I stayed up painting well after midnight last night, I got much less done than the night before, which was less productive than the night before that. Long commutes, full days of work followed by shopping & late night's painting are finally catching up with me I think. Only a couple of more days to go though... so if I can keep things moving until Christmas I'll have over a week thereafter to do things like sleep.
Luckily, most of things that are left to do can be done fairly quickly... i.e. it might take a while to paint, but I can keep working from thing to thing & won't have to leave things sit for long period while wash dries or GS sets.

Thanks guys! One final Christmas Day treat. Here's a shot of the post present opening aftermath at our house. Of course Mrs. Gits has dutifully run around and picked up the paper and bows that were tossed everywhere, and the toys have been spirited away and are being played with. But the mighty Xenos forces still stand vigil over the tree. I was a bit nervous when the boys went in to see the tree (their mom wouldn't let them go in until I was down stairs). The fireplace and stockings are in a different room so the kids were doing that first and had not yet seen the tree or the 40k figs. When they finally went into the tree room there was silence... I wasn't sure if they hadn't even seen the figures or hadn't sorted out exactly what had changed.... or just didn't care. Then I heard the little one start squealing in delight, and my eldest walked slowly back into the room and announced that it was the coolest monolith paint job he'd ever seen... gave me a hug & wished me Merry Christmas. It was all worth it.

Thanks guys. Taking care of a little unfinished business... whipped out 5 more bases of scarabs today... these are on the new bases and 3 of the bases are magnetized so they can keep track of wounds.
Have a 2000 point battle set up between the boys. But we'll need to quick build some termigants for the little one. Will paint them hopefully this week, but would like to have the build by tonight so the kids can start playing ASAP.

@proto: No bloody idea. I guess I'd look for a good base manufacturer if I could afford it. Use bits of building combined with some "sidewalk" plasticard & grey gravel if I couldn't.

I've seen people produce very convincing sidewalk with hand torn, sheet cork.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Or if you've got a blender, you can pop the sheet cork in and give it a pulse or three! :-) then you get the bigger parts and the fine stuff to fill in gaps nicely! once undercoated and dry brushed it'll be rubble in no time!
or just buy the resin ones! :-)

Well, that would probably be two 5-man assault squads with removable jump packs, outfitted BA style (not too extreme... just a flamer if I remember right) and a sanguinary priest aka apoth... but a cool looking one.
Also more GMS marines on tap...

@Egg: The same to you good sir! I'm really glad they liked the presents, but I'm still painting for them... got a ton of termigants to do for Thing 2 and some of the new IC's to do for Thing 1. All good though, I've been remiss in doing anything for them for a long time, so it's nice to really give their armies a major boost.

You missed the posts... here was the setup Christmas morning: They loved them. I haven't really done much in the way of close-up shots, but there are some closer shots on my Nid and Doom Eagle/Necron blogs (see sig). I could take some closer shots if people wanted, but as these are really only painted to a tabletop standard, I hadn't bothered to this point. I guess close-ups of the Tervigon might be interesting as it uses the Chapterhouse conversion kit.

26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Depends on how many "extras" you give the nids... but generally not quite... the Necron army is around 2000 pts and the Nids are at 2300+. Now I'm just doing two necron ICs and a cryptek, which should bring the 'cron total up a bit. I'm also working on a bunch of gaunts for the nids, which (because of the tervigon) won't affect their total very much at all.
24409
Post by: Matt.Kingsley
Gits, from what I've read if you take1 brood of gaunts as troops, you can take a tervigon as a troops choice???

Yep. We are putting together one group of gaunts with upgraded weapons and a whole bunch of nekked gaunts as spawned critters.

OK, just to finish up the Christmas extravaganza... I thought I'd point you to a couple of posts dealing with the xenos projects of the last couple of pages...
First, took some detailed shots of the Tervigon. These are not intended to be "look at my fancy paint job" pics ('cause it aint), rather just a better look at the Chapterhouse conversion kit & how it turns out. Include a couple of shots comparing the Tervigon to a normal fex. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/510/319195.page#3751621
Second, I finished one of the IC's for Thing 1's Necrons... Imotekh the Storm Lord. Painted to a higher level than the Nid so you can feel free to blast away on it if you like. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/1200/285111.page#3754418
Should be looking at my marines again soon... just taking care of unfinished business.

Assaulty squad?
pweetee pleeze
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Yes, assault squad... two actually. Since we've sold our souls to the tourney circuit and gone dex shopping... I've got 2 BA assault squads to make up. But to keep them flexible and use them in my (normal) vanilla army, I'm going to give them magnetized jump/back packs and enough magnetized options so that they can be fielded as a single 'nilla squad.
I have been really jonesin' for an assault squad or two for my army, so I'm pretty juiced about making this one (well... two, but you get my drift).
Boys and I just got back from wyomingfox's place where we had a tremendously fun 6000 point battle. Wyfox and Thing 2 with 3000 pts of Nids (total) vs. Thing 1 and I with Necrons and Orks. We used some mission out of the battle missions book. We basically sat back and let Imotekh do his evil work. Worked pretty damn well too, which is good cause I don't think the rest of our armies did much save pick off a few gene stealers and gaunts. We only got through four turns before it was wayyyy past bed time and I had to get us home, so we didn't pick a winner... but the Nids were all over us... think it would have gone badly in turn 5.
Night fight lasted the entire game and Imotekh's lightning accounted for a lot of figures. Pretty dang impressive.
I've been painting my butt off for the kids, even after Christmas. While I still have a few things I want to do for them, it's time to get back into my marines. Expect some build pics soon.

I'm back. Mantis Warrior in tow.
First assault marine. I know this pose won't make any sense with a normal back pack on... but I don't care. Pack is magnetized for easy switching. Will be mounted on an appropriate base. Happy with the way he turned out but I forgot how much of a pain in the * ss it is to get the beakie parts into any other configuration than they're normal one. If anyone has any Mark VI legs that are NOT from the original beakie set that you're willing to sell or trade... please let me know.
Decided these squads are going to be heavily bionic as they'd really get beaten up due to all the close-in action. Should make for some fun models (and it's another way to bi-pass the beakie leg issue).

I have made a bit of progress on the next figure... actually it's effectively done save for magnetizing the back pack / jump pack, just haven't had the energy. Feeling much better now though so I anticipate finishing it up this evening. Didn't quite work out exactly as I'd hoped but to be honest I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Got a 4-day weekend coming up... all the wood cradles are full and both kids are in a 40k modeling/painting frenzy (especially Thing 2... last night he primed all his termigants on his own without my even being there... which I know is no big deal but shows initiative, confidence and enthusiasm that I'm all in favor of). So, I plan on finishing the build of the first 5-man assault squad and with luck, getting the airbrushing done. I'll finish painting Tranzen (sp) the Infinite for Thing 1 while he'll be gleefully assembling his new box of Necron Praetorians (into whatever configuration is best... I have no idea). I'll also be helping Thing 2 paint his hoard of termigants (though I'm going to make him do most of the work) while working on his two, custom made Nid drop pods (thanks to Solar_lion). They're big enough and unique enough to warrant some airbrushing games. We may also go skiiing.... (thbbbbbt!)

LOL! Never thought of that....
I *wish* it looked more like me. And thanks for noticing... you're the first one to comment on it. It's just that in the midst of endless "quick and dirty" paint jobs... it's been the one figure that I've taken time with over the last couple of months... so I thought it deserved a bit of time as my avatar. So. What did you accomplish (40k-wise) in 2011? A couple of weeks into the new year I finally got the chance to take stock. Here's what I came up with. I built and/or painted... 20 gene stealers 2 zoanthropes 7 ripper swarms 7 warriors 1 trygon 1 winged hive tyrant 1 tervigon - 5 wraiths 4 scarab bases 2 spyders 2 monoliths 1 destroyer lord - 7 tranquility veterans of various configurations 2 razorbacks 1 iron clad dreadnought 3 drop pods 10 tac marines 2 tac marine sergeants 1 MoTF 4 ML marines (dev squad) 10 scouts 1 terminator librarian 5 scout bikers 3 objective markers 2 LS storms - 1 grot tank 1 cyber runt-herd (cybergits) - 5 "great marine swap" trade marines - hundreds of bases (since I re-based both my kids' armies) So, not counting the bases, that's 96 models. Woof! I participated in several local tournaments. Went to (and played in) my very first con (after 20+ years of gaming), which was Adepticon. Went to my second (albeit much smaller) con (Rock Con) and played there, as well as having a wonderful chance to get to hang out with some of the boyz from my FLGS in a more social setting. OH, forgot a *very important* one... ORGANIZED MY MARINE BITZ!!! What did I give up to do all this?? Mainly... time with my wife. Also time taking care of the house, which then fell on my wife. Man, on reflection... I owe her big time... How about you guys?

Hmmmm.... looking at the pic... I might re-position the head slightly so it's looking down more. Since these both (and perhaps the nearly the whole unit) will be leaping off of rock piles, it would make more sense, especially with the positioning of the bolt pistol. Don't know if you can tell from the pic, but his right arm, chest, left leg and left hand are bionic. The Srg has really had a tough life. More machine than man at this point. I have two different variations of the next figure in mind. He won't be leaping... but with luck should be very cool and help the over-all dynamic in appearance of the unit. I would kill for a good source of straight arms. GW hardly makes them... I've picked up a few for my vanguard but if I had them I'd use them all the time. Also, arms with a greater than 90 degree bend would be fantastic. If I had the time, I'd commission sets from Chapterhouse... but I don't... so I'll have to do them the hard way. Dagnabbit... @graven: Thanks mate! @Vit: The BLACKHAND heads are for my later period Mantis Warrior army (post crusade... 100 years after these Badab era marines). One of my stated goals for the year is to complete one full squad for my late period army. I know it doesn't sound like much, but it's a start. @IPS: Your work is great man. Your juxtaposition of last year's efforts is really funny though. @nerdfest: A very productive year to you too mate, eh? 65 figs with another 15 in the que... not bad at all!

Digging the new models!
As for what I accomplished in 2011:
- finished building my grots, which includes 20+ grots, 10 lootas, some burangrots, buggies, and a stompa!
- helped a friend with his Eldar army
- Painted some random IG stuff
Pretty short compared to other folks, but hey, it is what it is; In spend too much time rummaging through bitz boxes and lurking on dakka - not to mention we moved house which put things on hold for several months!

I got about 2500 points of Nids painted up (though I am now re-doing the armor highlighting), 3000 points of BA, which I have sprayed over in order to paint them all DA colors, and another 2k is (some of which is the previous BA).
My plans for 2012
- Model and paint remaining Nid's (modeling already all but done).
- Paint up everything that is modeled before starting anything new.
- Figure out the stupid airbrush.

So many people doing so much wonderful work! Thanks all for posting your progress on my blog. Remember volume doesn't mean everything, as long as your moving forward, you're in good shape.
Well, finished my 3rd assault marine built... little bit of Florentine chainsword action for ya. This is a pose Iv'e had in my mind for a very long time and for a variety of reasons, it was a major PITA to pull off. However, I'm pretty happy with the results. I have one more kneeling pose in mind for my assault marines, but I think I'll save it for the other squad.

I think it's a BA head... has the medieval "bowl" haircut. I need to get out my engravers as the top of his head/hair is rather featureless... I'll give it a bit of extra character before I paint.
Should have marine #4 done shortly. Will post if I get a bump.

Ck is obviously either psycic or like the rest of us know that whatever you produce will be epic!

Post by: Gitsplitta
Well, in the current write-up, marine #5 gets a flamer. Since I probably won't be using BA rules outside of Adepticon, I won't have to worry about giving him an interchangeable backpack, so I'll just make him as a normal flamer armed marine and the fold him into a tactical squad when I'm done. Which means.... I could actually just turn out a regular old beakie flamer marine. Bit of nostalgia there for the faithful. Not very creative though.
22619
Post by: inmygravenimage
Nostalgia is awesome. Also, it's good, sometimes, too not model, but just go with the fig. That in itself provides variety.

@graven: Well, this whole army is kind of a nostalgia trip.
@Matt: Good heavens you're right... OK, I can magnetize one more backpack.
@Captainsolstice: I've pondered cinematic effects before but haven't tried them. I'll give it some thought.
@CK: You got it bud, let's hope I don't disappoint.
Speaking of which, here's Assault Marine #5. He's all original save for the legs which just give him more of an upright posture as opposed to the crouching originals. Jump pack needs a bit of work yet, but otherwise he's all set.
38276
Post by: M0rdain
You are up nice and early Gits I'm starting to think about lunch here I can imagine #5 laughing manically as he burns the heresy to a crisp.
48376
Post by: Capitansolstice
I love the old school flamer!
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Like the original missile launcher, the beakie flamer is iconic. I could have concocted something else more interesting looking, but I don't think anything else would have really felt right. I know the picture is from kind of an odd angle, but the leg switch is important for giving the figure some "presence" and taller stature. I like the "rocked back" pose, which isn't so visible here but is really obvious from a straight side view. Seems appropriate for a marine with gouts of flaming fuel issuing from his weapon... especially with that huge pack on his back changing his center of balance. No bionics on this one... must be new.
So, should I paint these 5 now, or build the other 5 then paint all 10 together?

Post by: Alfndrate
Gits, any big plans for 250 pages?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Afraid not Alf... maybe it's time for another review/summary?? I'll wade though and see if there's enough new work to make it worth while. I kind of doubt it though, been spending most of the last several months on painting the kids' armies. Still, perhaps 250 is best represented the same way as the rest of the blog... with steady progress as I plow through yet another unit.
27214
Post by: IPS
Maniac laughter fits this marine pretty good indeed.^^
I'd say paint the 5 first, then make the other 5.
But in the end, just do what you feel like doing.
edit:
I would love to see a detailed review of your army.
Some detail shots of every squad, some army shots. Stuff like that.

Post by: Gitsplitta
By popular demand... OK... 2 people... I've decided to celebrate 250 pages by doing another P&M review! It's been 50 pages after all, I must have gotten something done.
We start off this review by featuring one of my "dream units"... scout bikers using the original RT era jet bikes that I've been hording for 20 years...
Brother Morpheus:
Brother Barak:
Brother Foreman:
Brother Phoenix:
Sergeant Blade:
And the whole squad:
An army shot:
Finished up the last of my sternguard, including one GMS marine.
The Grill Master:
Brother Zane:
Completed sternguard squad on it's display base with Kantor off to the side. While the image looks a bit blurry when displayed on the blog, it's quite large and if you zoom in you can see a fair amount of detail.
My 1850 pt army at Rock Con, my highest placement ever in a tourney (middle-of-the-pack). This is the army I set out to build 2 years ago when I started this process.
Got some terrific GMS marines!
From Njal:
From endtrans:
From graven:
So, there you have it. I haven't included the assault builds as they're still WIP. Thanks for hangin' with me everyone. I appreciate as always your patronage, friendship and help throughout this process.
Immediate goals for the army are as follows:
- 2x 5-man assault squads with interchangeable packs
- 1 sanguinary priest / apothecary
- finish my two LS Storms, including completing the detailing of the vehicles & getting the gunners and one passenger each painted (to represent squad embarked or disembarked)
Once these are done, I'll start thinking seriously about working on a unit for the post-crusade army... either that or =I= vehicles for my GMS marine squads.

And GRATZ on 250! Woohoo!
