Just popped up on my Facebook - seemingly first available at the Milton Keynes Store 8th and 9th July
Price confirmed to be £20 a pop.
A customer can buy as many as they want, as they're effectively being cast up to meet orders - downside is they come out on the 2nd September 2017, so anyone ordering one will have a bit of a wait, which is completely unavoidable.

going to be annoyed with this one, I don't usually care about store exclusives but there's no basic power armoured captain type character in the new primaris range yet, so making this a limited thing gets up my nose

Looks okay, particularly with the helmet. I can see this becoming a collectible like the other limited minis they've done. (Still a stupid thing, since all of those would sell well normally).

So need to sign up to their FB feeds and keep an eye out for other anniversaries.

You can be bothered, but it's a bit of a silly thing to be bothered by. This isn't Infinity where you have them pulling arm or head options from models to release them as limited editions/exclusives.
How hard do you think something like this would be to convert up from a full Primaris boxed set?

It's a shame I'll never, ever see one in person due to GW's ridiculous GW store only promo policy. I live in the US. We don't have GW stores everywhere and I'm not willing to drive hours and hours to get to the closest one.
I really wish they'd stick to promo items like dice or artwork cards. Making exclusive models that huge segments of your customer base will never reasonably be able to get their hands on just makes a bunch of people mad.

Again - we can speculate on what may be made available in the future but for now I'd rather stick to the topic of this thread, which is this model, which represents a gap in the range and which should not be limited availability in my opinion on that basis. Yes, I'm aware I could convert something.

'Normal' Marines can be upgraded to Primaris, and Cawl's first batch of Primaris have been fighting for over 100 years by the time of the Dark Imperium novel.

The Primaris booklet also mentions that Captains are sometimes singled out during training. As for Lieutenants, well modern militaries have Lieutenants that have no experience so consider it some added realism.

There appears to be conflicting reports here.
It has, apparently, been claimed during the 8th edition release hype that marines can be "upgraded", however 2 well established no reason to lie BL authors have independently stated that they have been told that this is not the case and that this is not possible.

Oddly when it comes to stuff like this, I'm entirely fine with limited editions and models only available at Forge World etc. I think it's particularly cool that you can only get certain things in certain places (as a normal Primaris captain will eventually be available elsewhere, etc.). I dislike the general entitled approach a lot of people take to limited edition or special miniatures.
What baffles me, is from the GW side - as a business decision. People like to drink the GW kool-aid. A lot of folks chug it. So from a business standpoint it seems silly - this is something they could easily get $20-30 per mini. GW doesn't benefit from these selling for $75-150 later on eBay (unless you consider it "elevating the brand image" and all that nonsense).
It made sense when you had metal miniatures because you - by default - were doing small runs. Maybe 20-30 miniatures in a single spin cast mould, etc. As a HIPS mold it seems bizarre. I can only imagine these are being saved up for potential later release.

I wonder if its a 'risky' process,
so Battle Brother Nobodysignificant can be submitted to the Primaris Embiginator,
but none of the 'Name' characters can as there's a real risk they'll die

I thought creating a plastic mold and cast for a model like this cost a lot of money? And they wouldn't do it if they couldn't get the productions costs back + a profit. Doing an exclusive plastic model seems to go against that information.
I don't have any GWs within 30 minutes, I doubt i'll be getting this model. I'm not even a huge fan of how it looks, it just looks okay...not great/amazing. I prefer hq models I can pose, with weapons and more head options. But GW has been moving away from the highly personalized plastic hq kits they used to make. The space marine commander would be the best example.

Interesting. I considered picking up the novel on 8th release day, but I figured I'd bought quite enough and that I'd get it soon. I do want to read it to learn more about the new boys on the playing field, so maybe sooner rather than later.

It's a relatively small sprue, so the cost isn't as high. And costs have gone down over the years. Admittedly, they're still artificially limiting how much money they could make on this.

Swings and roundabouts.
It gets people in-store, which drives custom. In the hands of competent staff, people there to spend money will easily exceed their budget - so that's a win. Especially as it's 'free' when you cough up £150....
And getting people in store gives you a chance to promote other events and even local gaming clubs. The busier the store, the more people return. The more people return, the more they spend. The more they spend, the more active they are. The more active they are, the more they drop into the store.
So pretty much a loss leader - yes they might not make their money back on that particular kit, but as a sales driver it'll offset down the line quite nicely.
Well, that's the theory anyway!

I believe digital technology has made it considerably cheaper, if you have access to the right gear. There are a lot of traditionally manual processes that are drastically streamlined or removed when the grunt work is controlled by computer.

Currently putting feelers out on line.
Word is, you order it on the day, then they're cast up to meet demand.
So potentially, any 'one per customer' limit is done away with. That works for my group, as someone could order 50 if they so wished, without screwing anyone in their local area out of their one.
However, that's for the Milton Keynes launch. It's not currently clear if that process is a) correct b) the norm going forward. Automatically Appended Next Post: Quick update.
Previous post confirmed accurate - and there's no limit on the number a single customer can buy - though the volume I'm looking at (20-25 already) may be a bit much!

I've been in the business (advertising, marketing, commission only jobs) long enough to see it for what it is. It'll get you in the store and maybe get you to spend more money than you planned to.

I actually don't know about AoS because I hardly go to a GW store and only know about an exclusive mini if I see the Dakka thread If there was an exclusive Stormcast, well, it's not like they get a disproportionate amount of releases as the new burly superhuman shock troopers, right. Their torsi should fit really well with Numarines for ornate or primitive true scale EC/ BA/ SW, though.

you thought wrong. It starts July. No day or date mentioned. "Starting this July." July starts when it starts. Usually on the 1st. https://www.warhammer-community.com/2017/06/27/birthday-battle-brothergw-homepage-post-4/
Birthday Battle-brother
Every year, each of our hundreds of Warhammer and Games Workshop stores across the world celebrate their anniversaries with a weekend of celebration, gaming, painting competitions and general festivities.
These are events when hobbyists across the town or city gather to celebrate Warhammer in their area.
Over the next year, Warhammer and Games Workshop store anniversaries will have a very special guest.
This Primaris Space Marine Captain will be available to pick up or order at store anniversaries from this July.
Clad in the new Mk X armour and wielding the classic power fist and plasma pistol combo, this guy will look right at home next to your new Dark Imperium Primaris Space Marines. As there is no Chapter-specific iconography on the miniature, you can very easily use this guy in a range of Space Marines forces. Using him in your games is easy too, as full rules are included with the model.
This captain will be available the world over, wherever there’s a Warhammer or Games Workshop store, and because these will be available for a whole year, everyone will have a chance to get their hands on one.
He’s not the only special product available at your local store anniversary though.
Also exclusive to those weekends will be a painting mat, brush wallet, ‘Eavy Metal Dice (literally) and a Warhammer 40,000 Artbook.
