Nurgley stuff is sooo good, and the Wolves are great. Might sound strange but I like the banner bearer, his face actually looks like he has been out in the cold.

Hey everybody! I have a boring grey update for you I just wanted to show you my progress on the build for my upcoming Minotaus army and a little update on Belisarius as well as a bit of terrain I finished after I found it in a drawer

So anyway here's a little run through, first my Terminator Chaplain I scored.

Ivanus Enkomi Head Chaplain of the Minotaurs, he can be fielded with a power sword/fist and a jump pack so I thought he would be fun to run with an assault squad I do need a jump pack for him but I can't find one of the older ones that have the jets on each side like the HH ones? any ideas?

I also finally got hold of these models and as is normal for me I removed one of the heads (the dead dudes skull) and added a suitably pained expression one instead!

The Command squad I built for the Fists now are going to destroy in the name of the Minotaurs, I also added some appropriate Bull horns on my chapter champion!

Ten man assault squad

cobbled together a dev squad with 4 missile launchers hope they'll be useful?

Sniper scouts (they were rescue models so a bit rough)

Still trying to work out if I should attack the Tac squad pads and cut them off with clippers? so i can add Minotaurs pads?

Boom Boom car.

Now here's Gits' stuff I was offered Celestine to keep but after a review from a mate of mine who played against her and said she was a pain in the ass I just HAD to paint her for him

and Belisarius CAAAWWWWWLLLLL

And the terrain from the old Battle for Macragge scrubs up well

Phew! a lot of not much but i'd love some talky talk so i can reply when I'm free at work tomorrow?

Very nice builds. I think you should caption your work...
Your HG marine in the terrain saying " I took this down with my power fist. I'm that good!"

lol must have been a low flying lander Solar! if he was an Angry Marine I'd understand.......

Whaley, I think the mk4 packs would look good but I'm doubtful it would work with his helmet crest? I had a Dark Furies pack I tried and it sort of hits the back of his head :-( I was looking at the MaxMini ones but I'm not really wanting to spend that much..... yet.

i've got some more to assemble for my Minotaurs but I'm going slow with them, namely another 2 Tac squads, 2 Rhinos and i'm waiting on some FW bits and some things in the post then i'll go go Gadget assembly arms....

Well I may need a jump pack but i'll let you know, you've already been more than generous with your gift of what shall be called Big Nasty! (that's not as dirty as it sounds guys...)

I also really need to get back to painting faces again! looking at how nice the HG face is and compared to some of my latest ones I feel i'm slipping a bit. but I need some fresh blood so to speak, anyone got any examples of cool expression filled bare heads I can spend way too much money to buy?

Moar finished model and more work in progress and more assembled Minotaurs! and I think you'll find that Howling Griffon is indeed already well placed throughout my posts as a scale measure and all round random dude

But today lets see what my rendition of Belisarius Cawl looks like! he was very fiddly but a very rewarding model, lots of metals that look very spindly and prehensile are a good match with some really nice red robes that sort of jump out at you and then his face sort of hidden but still very important to his overall feel.

Also today I started Celestine and her ladies, wanted a slightly different look to her than I have seen, still Celestine but a little more 'Damofied' so darker and a little more baroque and her wings on the jump pack are surging with energy.

and lastly my Mino scouts have new heads I bought! really crisp and clean sculpts from a place on FB and I assembled what is now one of my favorite kits! plastic Tartaros terminators are the bomb!

and now Celestine and her bodyguards!

Scouts with rebreather heads, I think they look good and still look marine.

and these beautiful Terminators one with a bearded head from the same seller as the scouts. I also have ANOTHER squad on it's way of Tartaros so they'll most likely be Storm Bolter and fist guys? but i'm open to thoughts?

I'm also waiting on a bunch of CD's from ebay and this is good because I just love listening to music and painting for hours........ which will be helpful as I need to finish off the Reaver titan and wave 2 of Nurgle.....

Thanks Archer I do enjoy painting reds, I'm trying to go a little out of my usual recipe comfort zone with some new reds on models i'm painting currently. Not so much a pain to assemble although he is a fiddly model only two mechamdrites gave me grief, he is harder to hold while you paint him and I even had him in sub assemblies!

Celestine the Living Saint! and she's finished and beautiful! I tried to grim darken her without going too grim or too dark.... a very delicate model but a very striking one, good height not too much ostentatious bling around her and I think really stays true to the original model I did my normal golds on her but focused the silvers at the reflection points since she's turning her face to the skies to bring down holy retribution.

I hope you guys like her, not much else to say about her really but the whole triumverate looks like one nasty bunch of s.o.b's

Steal away! I just wanted to try something a bit different than you normally see with her, plus I wanted to convey a sort of electric power to her presence and the wings were a good choice for doing that, funnily enough the base colour is actually just armour wash from SWM and then I added purple to darken it near the body and added the bolts obviously. I think she came up a treat!

I dig the armor, gives it more light than normal. Not a fan of the lighting on the wings though. It is kind of the opposite effect of the armor, where it makes it heavier.

Thanks guys, painting her did kinda make me want to paint a SoB force but the Russian site that does the models I like i couldn't read nor understand so it put cold water on that idea

but I do have a rough update on wave 2 of Nurgle! I just had to do a bit of very basic greenstuff work to fill in some holes on models, I left the GS fairly rough since it will be the painting that makes it all come together

I am quite excited actually to paint the Rhino with the 'Maw-Doors' I used left over mouths from the Maggoth lord to make the fleshy toothy entrances.

another Mauler fiend made from the left over parts from the maggoth Lord and the original fiend body, has kind of a nut sack neck....

and another rhino....

Should have these primed and started this weekend and done next week

Thank you gentlemen he is truly very yucky! I had a game against the Nurgle yesterday that we had to call short but I stayed true to form and lost as normal! Typhus and a Terminator bodyguard are really nasty even against Thrakka and MANZ! although I was chewing through them when we called it. I got some pics but haven't uploaded yet i'll try and do that tonight, it's just some random conflict shots. I have realised that when playing it really comes down to who gets to charge first, he was just in better positions and I suffered because of it but I'm looking forward to a re match!

So I was thinking that all my mini's and terrain now are really gritty and dark, which is cool, but I need to have some brighter colour to play with, should I re paint the buildings brighter in a red or something? or re do my ruined streets gaming table? or even just add lighter dust colours over it ?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Here's just a couple pics from the game, nothing too exciting but was a fun game!

My one and only squad of Boyz pile out of the Truk to get to grips with.....

These guys.....who duly beat the gak outta them.

the Nurgle terminatos and Typhus just casually walk over to beat the snot out of.....well, pretty much everything.

Damn Maulerfiend raced over a building to get to my Deff Dred charged him and crushed him like a paper cup.

After a bit of carnage the Wagon finally got around to unloading his mob of MANZ close enough.....

....for Typhus to beat the pus outta Ghaz how embarrassing.

while around the corner the Chaos chap on a bike roared into a 6 Bike Ork mob with the help of Spawn....

leading to this result....

Who promptly rode off the board getting away

Thanks Dr, I know exactly what you mean! I (as you should know by now) love the really cinematic story driven approach to everything I do and creating a battle in and among ruins that fit the warzone and armies is deeply rewarding, I feel I need to do more terrain now, something different, something multi level perhaps? or more theme driven scatter terrain? I found some cheaper Hexalog? terrain that could be done very cool so I might give them a shot, price wise they're cheap for what you get

Started back onto Gits Reaver today too, as well as a couple of bare heads, one for my Asterion Moloc model and I also started building my rhinos with FW doors! good times!

So I'm in a good place at the moment with painting, I managed to get more of the Reaver done which I may update later today after work and I'm steadily progressing through Nurgle wave 2! which only leaves unpainted 3 primarchs and a Warhound titan :-) easy peasy. and I also assembled stuff!

actually I will take some pics this arvo and update :-)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
A few pics, a question or two and ore pics

Reaver time, I washed all the metals darker by mixing poster acrylic black with an old pot of boltgun metal and adding water until it was sort of wash like then wiped excess off with my hands and a rag making sure it was darker underneath and where you wouldn't see much. Next I added different colours to vary the tones on different parts, dark blue where it's a bit oily and sepia to age it, a good coat of varnish followed as the parts need to withhold a fair amount of handling while I finish them.

Next up is some pretty cruddy shots of the Nurgle wave 2 stuff more tactical plague marines, 4 more spawn made this time from Gal Vorbak models, another Maulerfiend conversion and 2 rhino's

And lastly my Minotaur army build progress I took the plunge and cut off the pads to add on the FW ones and they look heaps better, I now have 20 tactical marines (and here's the question I alluded to) what do I give my Tactical Sarge's? I've armed one with a bolt pistol and a pointing hand and the other is just a marine with a bolter? should I actually give them anything different?

Oh and I built Hecaton Aikos from FW

Honestly, with 8th edition only a few weeks out now and bringing a total overhaul of the game, it's hard to say. But in general you want to keep them cheap. Combi-weapons matching the squad's special is usually a safe bet, or maybe a power weapon if it syncs with the squads other weapons (ie. if the squad has flamers/meltas and thus will be getting in close. No point putting a power weapon on a Las/Plas squad ect). Failing that, just keeping them stock and spending the points on the Veteran Sergeant upgrade for the Ld buff is perfectly sensible too.

If you're going power weapon, Mauls are the best all rounders, giving you (at the moment) decent AP, wounding most infantry on 2s and giving you some light anti-vehicle capability. If you're going for a sword to kill other Marines, I think the conventional wisdom is that a Lightning Claw is mathematically better most of the time.

Thanks Para, at the moment everyone just has bolters as I like the ease of having them all the same and I will use my other more specialised units to have heavier weapons. so I should be o.k just having them with a bolt gun? sounds good to me i'll just paint his helmet red

Yeah, if you're just keeping the tacs to fill troop requirements and sit on objectives, bolters are the best bet.

Thanks guys, not much more to go really on the reaver, it's an interesting model with it being so large, I approached it as a lot of different smaller models when it came to detail and painting but now it's nearly done I need to look at it from a different perspective and see how it all fits cohesively as a whole entity with colours and weathering etc.

DrH do not stress mate, that's only the start of those Nurgle :-) there is indeed more washes to come, they get an Agrax wash and then I pick out the choice rusty parts again!

Well guys, she's done! finally, I am exhausted after painting her and if i'm honest I could keep painting her! there's just so much to her it's ridiculous. But I had to look at the whole model and I realised I had to pull it together as one entity which was easier said than done lots of different tones and metal effects are featured throughout the model from oiled leg pistons to worn rubbed metal and aged or burnt metal which lends the main skeleton a darker ancient look but still fairly clean overall which is a nice effect when put beside the brighter armour plates and gold banding, I love the orange/red metallic it looks stunning in the light. Also there wasn't an airbrush in sight! she was all brush painted after a spray primer

I have taken a HEAP of pics and you get to pretty much see them all mainly because I couldn't decide between which ones to show the different finishes and parts, there's a lot to take in, so I'll dump some images and let you enjoy the journey! also spot where the target lock readout is sending her!

Thank you so much everyone! I am pretty happy with her, but as I told Gits, it would be easy to spend 12 month on her just pushing the details and scrollwork etc. so i kinda had to stop myself from going too nuts, but I think it's a perfect balance of show and game and no doubt she'll turn some heads when she hits the table! i'd say my favorite part is the fact I did it with a brush, it makes her look different and shows you can do anything when you set yourself a goal! I did have a few weeks of burn out but once I got back into the swing it came together very quickly, I might have to buy some FW models so I can maybe win a WarLord to paint next

Thanks again for each and every positive comment you guys give me, not just on Dues Ex Machina but on everything I do, I really appreciate the confidence you have in me and the fact you enjoy seeing what I paint no matter what level i'm doing, the more comments I get the more painting I seem to do

should have Nurgle to show you in the next day or two and then I'll finish up the 2 Asterion Molocs I have started (one mine and one Whaleys) and assemble and start Alpharius' Head Hunter squad which arrived yesterday and then I'll be back to being Whalemusic360's little brush bitch and i'll get Curze done next week too

Well, I got a message today while painting Cameron the Camper's Nurgle (he used to play Tau and just sat there camping and picking everyone off) and the message read that he needed to collect them today after work so in turn I needed to finish them all in short order! I did manage to get them all done but there are a few areas I would have liked to have spent more time on still they look good and match up with the other lot and you wouldn't notice pics are a bit rushed since I finished painting the last base 25 minutes before he got to my place and I had to set up and get snapping!

I also assembled a squad of Alpha Legion Headhunters these guys are a really sweet little detailed upgrade and I'm looking forward to having a go at painting this legion! I'll just have to work out if I want to do them a brighter or darker scheme in paint and feel.

and I got hold of some of that cracked earth GW paint and really like how it looks, I got it hoping I would like it enough to use for basing my Minotaurs and I certainly do

Could you use a darker scheme on the elite elements of the alpha Legion and lighter on the rank and file? Difficulty would be tying it all together. Or go from dark to light from head to toe?

Amazing Titan, Damo. It's truly a thing of beauty. Make sure you do another photo session of the thing before you ship it off
- and maybe a couple - set it up on your SWM Tablescape board in a battle diorama so we can see it (unleashing) it's full glory on some Orks or some such. Almost enough to inspire me to work on something large myself, but I just hate assembly.

The Nurgle stuff is sublime as well. I have no idea how you can turn out so much quality stuff of that level in so short a time.

...and Alpha Legion, hey? I wonder who they could be for?

Post by: nerdfest09

Hey guys, i'm going to share my start of the Alpha Legion the Tamiya clear paint is a new kinda beast and presents it's own unique challenges with my style, it is a much thicker paint than i'm used to and it's quite sticky off the brush, you don't want to play around once it begins to dry as you'll end up with it either wiping from your base coat or becoming gluggy on the model.

So this is the first coat of clear blue over silver.

Now the first two have a wash of Blue ink which darkens them, evens out the colour and starts shading.

next up I used the green clear and overbrushed the model to give it the shine,

So tomorrow i'll be washing blue again and using nuln oil to darken the shadows and see how the colour looks with a bit of contrast

Also started this guy today, hes going to be great fun to paint as I really love thinking about the models and what they represent and i've managed to go to some dark places while placing myself in his shoes, some places so dark not even Taylor Swift could bring me back......

You can thin down Tamiya clear paints with thier X-20A thinner.
I got a huge pot for about £5 from amazon.
I think its also supposed to be airbrushed rather than brush painted, this makes the stickiness easier to work with.
Nonetheless, the headhunters are looking pretty awesome and Curze is a gloriously evil model, I'm looking forward to what you do with him.

Those Alphas are off to a great start!

And though it seems as if the Tamiya is a bit of a pain in the beginning, it looks as if it will get you 'quicker' and (ha!) 'easier' to a better finish, if that makes sense?

And like magic they're finished I learnt a bit during this test and this is a level I'm happy with painting to my fairly quick standard that still looks good great colour on them even if the images can't show you the transitions between blue and green well so I upped the saturation to see if I can get them closer to accurate but you should see what I have I actually found a black wash over everything helped bring it together, darken and shade all at once then green as a highlight and silver, a troop heavy force would look sweet like this especially with some dust around the feet.

hope you like them, especially Alpharius, whoever that may be.....

I really like them!

I think I'd like them a bit more if they were a touch more 'blue' though?

Unless it is the pics?

Of course, having the Headhunters be their own color is OK too!

That would be cool. Then you could give stuff like sergeants a more "blue" armor, but a helmet that matched these guys. Terminators or other vets could have the helm and should pads the green color, etc.

I bet switching the order of when you lay down the clear colors would be all it took. Silver>Clear Green>Blue Wash>Clear Blue>finish as normal.

Just a quick reply tonight brothers but the hunters are actually more blue than green but for some reason they look greener . I did use the green as a highlight so perhaps that's where your eye goes? They certainly can be more blue but I don't want them to look like blue Marines :-) I'll see if I can get some other images to show Alph. If anyone wants to chat to me via Facebook messenger look for Oscar mallinson and my profile pic is Oscar.

So maybe I got a heap done on the night haunter! and maybe hes a wickedly cool model! I can't really convey the feeling he purveys but I took him as a real challenge for a couple of reasons, firstly it's been a while since i've painted a primarch, and secondly I really struggle with painting blue.

This led me to do a little research for something to inspire the Nerd within and I started looking at different blues and different ideas relating to the Night Lords legion, 'In midnight clad' and hunting by moonlight etc, I found some cool moody images of moonlight across water and a few of night hunts in some woods which made me look closer at what I was seeing, which was a very dark blue or black which was paired with strong highlights where the minimal light hit and that's where I went with Konrad Curze pair that with a pale face and dark eyes with a reddish tint around them and he looks suitably pained and unhinged while also suitably single minded in his purpose!

so lets have a look at him so far.

I'm not sure what to do with the two victims he comes with? how far to take them or what colour to do them to tie in and compliment the haunter? but that's tomorrows duty along with the rest of him.

Beautiful work as usual. The level of highlight is perfect imo,

I am going to dare to make critique...

I could easily be my monitor, but I am getting a hint of purple on the blue, particularly the shoulder pads. Not a bad thing, just maybe me.

And if this is supposed to be a moon lite scene, (completely personal thing) I would like to see the red on the wings much darker, in moon light red absorbs all light and becomes nearly black. Not sure how you convey that but maybe a shade darker with brighter very fine highlights!

By all means tell me where to go on this, he is looking well beyond anything I could dream of as is, and as I said the highlighting on the armour is truly stunning.

In Midnight clad we come.......

I kind of needed to paint this model, I was feeling a bit flat and not really up to it after the epicness that is Dues Ex machina! I wasn't sure how to approach Konrad Curze, as I mentioned in my previous post I am not confident with painting blues, it's been ages since i've painted faces or a Primarch and I couldn't quite work out my approach on the overall feel of the chapter's theme but still make him stand out and pervade that sense of foreboding and barely restrained malice Think i've nailed it

I kept his victims very dark and made them part of the overall picture with only relevant blood spatters to tell the story, his armour really is midnight clad and the shadows are strong with an overall darker look to him.

Again, I always seem to throw up a bunch of similar pics but they are each nice in a different way with shadows and focus so don't hate too much!

Astoundingly good! Really well done! It may sound a bit pretentious but i think its the overall feel that makes this one so good for me, dark and sinister. You honestly would never know that blue isnt your favourite colour to work with, you have pulled it off perfectly.

The base as well is fantastic, its an odd thing to focus on but what colours do you use for the stone?

(Going back a bit in time, the alpha legion are incredible, i may steal your technique, and the nurgle doors made me skin crawl, in a good way.

Always leave here feeling thoroughly inspired Damo, thank you!

p.s. the reaver titan made me choke on my tea i was that amazed. it goes without saying, it is the best thing anyone has ever done, ever, on anything.

The death guard are looking real sharp. I'm still loving that rhino, but where did you get that top bit with the star and the tentacle coming through it?
Alpha Legion look great too! That metallic blue is very pretty and contrasts with the dirty metal very well.
Konrad also looks great! I'm digging is pallid flesh tone and his power armor.

I want to add more colour in my terrain pieces since my models are very dark and dirty, I know it's not a model per se but hopefully it's cool enough.

Great looking Asterion Moloc there. I think some signage would break up the tank well, though depending on the "location" you envision for it, stencilled letters (and a warning logo or two) would work instead of or in addition to tags (that would go on top).

I really enjoy what I do when it comes to models and I have the same passion about the created world we play them in, but I've never got a solid grasp on the aesthetics of the terrain like Cam & Dsteingass have among others.I do feel I need to add more vibrancy to the colour choices and splashes, lucky I've got a few buildings to play around with soon and by soon I mean after I've done the large Dropfleet army for RiTides and the Lictor project for myself :-)

There are two kinds of people, Terrain lovers, and everyone else. You DO get the aesthetic, 100%, yours is just unique, different from mine, or Cam's, or Vik's. Let your terrain flag fly brother! There is room and advice aplenty.

If I could make a suggestion: Start out with smaller, linear terrain, pieces of cover, ammo crates, walls, pipes, other mobile scatter terrain, then move onto bigger things, your stuff will all blend better. That way you can try different techniques, and still get to use them in games or even for photo backdrops.

Oh, and when it comes to weathering, there are two schools, Comical fits the general 40K aesthetic that GW prints, and Realistic Weathering, where less is generally more.

Then there is my school, which is "make it look as filthy and disgusting and corroded, and rotted as I can"

Mad is how I roll crazy is the air I breathe and innuendo is the blood in my veins!

Thanks Dave for the support, I am sort of collecting a few smaller scatter bits of terrain to work on so they will appear soon, the can tank was already primed metal so I just grabbed it first I have to admit though I do lean more towards the dirtier the better and I especially love your current industrial yellow work.

Az, Tassie is probably better than Victorias weather now days mate! but I see your point! it's only going to get colder and wetter and worserer! this I see as a benefit to give myself the excuse to light the wood fire in the garage and stay out there for a while listening to the rain on the roof while I create my 3 boards for armies on parade!

So my working life for a week or so has been very debilitating when it comes to models and paint hence my quietness, but i'm nearly done with RiTides 50 or so space ships and then I'll get them under the brush and start cutting and re posing the Lictor when it arrives.

I think Az i'm just super organised with my styles! I know what i'm doing before I start painting and I usually work on a lot of models painting the same colour or layer on each one as a whole before moving on, I also paint all the colours that will get the same colour wash at once so I shade both at the same time, also i'm very fast lol! :-) imagine a mad orchestra conductor but with brush instead of baton, that's pretty much me on a daily!

I wish I could get myself more organised. But once I get the shed sorted out (once we actually move into the new place) I am hoping to get it all properly set up and then we will see if I am even half the hobbyist that you guys all are. Although set up advice for a hobby area would be much appreciated......

You should check Dsteingass' last 10 pages or so then as he redid his workspace in his new home. Lot of nice ideas from him and the community

Yeah Dsteingass' hobby area is the ultimate set up! very jealousy inducing! my own isn't so grand, I managed to buy a near new large school desk with a hutch and drawers for $80. and I grabbed a shelf with glass doors from Fantastic Furniture, my paints are in the mdf pot holders in front of me which works since the desk is large it gives me a good working area and I can literally have one side 'to do' and the other 'done' while I work in the middle. I can snap some pics if you want an idea? mine is also set up in the smallest bedroom in the home as a dedicated Nerd Lair.

Totally agree with Dave, the second you have space you fill it with more stuff, gets to a critical mass sometimes.

Have restrained from commenting, not really sure why. That scenery piece is great bud, your style is your own and your metal technique is to die for. If I may be so bold a few suggestions. (can't believe I am doing this! ) The rust is brilliant, the yellow paint is good, not how I would do it, but that is how we are here, your style is yours, Daves is his, mine is mine, and there are always dozens better at it out there. I would only work on the edges of the yellow, to make it look like has peeled off. You could get some alcohol or some Mentholated spirits and a cotton bud and rub away the paint at the edges, can be very effective. The red paint is winding me up though, it looks to painted on, is it meant to be rust streaks, or blood splatter, or is it were someone is attempting to repaint the tank? One trick I use for staining like I think you are trying for, is to put the watery paint on at the top, then add water, or in my case I add rubbing alcohol and water mixed, let it naturally run down, the alcohol lets it evaporate quick enough. and the runs go where they naturally should. Also experiment with taking the wet paint off, using a sponge or tissue over wet paint has very interesting effects for larger surfaces.

Overwhelmingly honoured you put me and Dave in the same sentence.

I am going to shut up now and will probably delete or edit this post down to, "Well done Nerdy", shortly. I am in awe of your skills sir and feel conscious of my lack there of.

Thanks for the leads. Have looked at what Dsteingass has and had to put the jealousy back in the cupboard. Am framing the inside of the shed this weekend. So should be able to get it clad as well so a sparky can get it all wired up for me soon. Then a bit of paint to the walls and I can start moving in with the shelves, desk and think about starting to make the gaming table.

Steve, your models are built but not sure when I can finish them.

i'm sorry guys, hopefully I can get through this.

Thanks guys, Nerdwench and I are all good, still going to Vegas for our wedding in October so I am putting it down to a test of our longevity and we succeeded with overcoming the hurdle, been together 10 years and that was our first argument so I suppose it was always gonna be a good one! but, yes, I am back home in the good sense, I did spend a few days with my parents and eating my mums cooking was punishment enough

so how about a model to kick things back into gear?

I have always loved the Lictors, the models and the fluff behind them! ever since I started I've loved them but not enough to do a Nid force so I'm thinking I might just do an artistic series of them in different battle zones? urban, jungle, sewer, feeding, hiding? also this was my first attempt to use a 2 part resin liquid for a deep base, still more learning to do to stop the concave lip and to seal the bases better for pouring as well as how much colour to add for what effect.

Overall i'm happy with how he looks, he might be a slight bit bright on the edge highlights? but it gives him his shape so you know he's a creepy creepy death machine.

Basing:
This IMHO is one of the better tut vids.

However, I really like what you have done, looks awesome, think people do there bases oversize and sand them down, polish the edges.

Lictor,:

Stunning, so creepy and menacing really top work, the edge highlights add to the effect for me, give it a ethereal quality. Fantastic.

Now go take care of your wonderful Nerdwench.

Thanks Cam, I watched Terrain Wench vids a few times, she describes everything really nicely for a beginner and i've ordered some thick gel medium to try some ripples and waves next time, I really quite enjoy using it to make different effects but i'm yet to attempt to file edges or polish anything in case I ruin it. if you know any other places I can check out i'm more than happy to have a look! might have to send one of them your way when i've done my collection

Archer you nailed it mate, gotta focus on the why rather than the now sometimes and we're good and comfortable again. as for the next Lictor I want a jungle one so having an Ork in the water gives me another excuse to use the water effects again

Hi San, I can see the movement and the lip isn't bad per se but just something I'd like to learn how to avoid in bigger projects. as for how long? I had him painted in about 3 hours, I know I could have spent more time and really gone to town but I am still happy with him.

Hey guys, i've made some progress on 2 of my 3 Armies on Parade boards, the Ork board is further along since it's easier to detail the Minotaur's one i've got a great blueprint to work on and think it'll look really cool when it's further advanced, so lets have a look in more depth eh!

Ork board, I wanted it to be fairly sparse with one larger focal point, this case it's the Orky fortification made from a shoe box lid and various roughly trimmed bits of plastic and semi melted room keys from a hotel I used some old tank treads and larger resin gates to make some rough barricades and cork bits to make some nice flat parts. I then went over it all with a slightly watered down pre mixed filler and added some good old fashioned garden dirt a little primer and that's where we're at.

Now my favorite board build at the moment, I wanted to get away from the ruined dirty battle scenes and do a clean display, I had a bunch of cake tier columns which suit the army as well as a few bits of balsa wood in various sizes the plan is to leave the wood and stain it and varnish to look like wooden floor (obviously) to offset the polished timber I wanted marble but couldn't bring myself to paint it so I thought outside the box and bought a self adhesive marble vinyl floor tile and cut it into rough squares to use as tiles next i'll work on a small balcony for the rear of the board and then start paint and subtle weathering and of course grouting those tiles!

and a couple smaller updates, I managed to finish priming the entire Dropfleet force for RiTides! so they'll be worked on soon too! Woo Hoo

and one last thing that shouldn't suprise any of you...... I got another dog! I borrowed a little friend to play with Daisy May to keep her entertained and burn off some energy and then I fell in love and couldn't let go back! this one was all me suprisingly since I've never liked smaller dogs for myself, but this little one has melted my heart and I find i'm very protective of her and like nothing more than having her curl up with me while I read a good white dwarf magazine or a novel. So i'll introduce to Kandy Kane the Wire Haired Dachshund the Emperor's wrath from the ankles down!

and yes, there'll be more pics of her soon.

Lol Gits Kandy does look a 'bit' like me she may be a hairy girl but we love nothing more than combing out beards while watching t.v, she needs a bit of help mind you... archer, don't stress dude, you know (or should by now!) I also have other hounds of more reasonable sizing! Kandy makes number 5 to the four legged clan, I've got Oscar my Labx about 30kg, Big Willy the rather large Samoyed (or small bear) weighing in at between 35-40kg and then the girls Izzy is about 26kg and Daisy may would only be 18-20kg but I assure you when they all want to be on the bed with you...... well, it's a squeeze

board number 3 is a Nurgle board using the models i painted for my mate cameron, still a rough idea for that one though, thinking of using expanding foam to get a rough shape and then add a mix of branches and tentacles/intestine parts to make a wet garden? perhaps marching over a swamp of corpses?

Erm,....thanks :-) he's quite the angry fellow isn't he! I'm starting to get a feel for the aesthetic of them and the fluff, no nonsense, very dark metals almost dirty brown due to the full on frontal assault they prefer, still need something else for the base but i'm not sure? maybe a little clump of spindly grass? any ideas?

That's the "I stepped on a Lego at 2AM" look if I'm any judge!

Minotaur looks amazing. Really shows off the Nerd knack for gritty metals.
For the base, yeah I think a spindly little tuft or two of some kind of brown grass should do the trick. It needs jsut that little bit more pop to it. Could even do a darker green/brown-green bit of clump foliage if that tickles your fancy?

Display boards are looking solid, too... Cant wait to see what you do with the Ork on in particular!

And the new furry kid looks great- Always loved Dachshunds myself- Havent seen a wire-haired one in a long long time... shes a real cutie

Thanks guys, 'Lego Raaaaaaaage' could well be a thing in 8th I'm thinking a small tuft of grass so i don't overpower the base, perhaps with a skull or two suggested by Az would also work! as for the Ork board, i'm not too sure to be honest, the main ground will be the normal earthy tones and drybrushed blending across it, and the main wall will be bolder in colours and hopefully look more tacked together when I'm done.

Glad you like Kandy too Ramos! she's a sweetheart, I only know of one other Wire haired which is her mum and I often get people saying "what a strange mix breed" she is NOT a mix (not that there's anything wrong with that, take Oscar for example) but people just don't realise they come in 3 different finishes! the long haired Dachshund are the sweet cuddly ones, the Wire haired are the funny clowns and the smooth ones are the bastards who love a good nip! as mentioned i'll be showing more of her soon, she just wants to be under my chair when i'm painting and she's just awesome.

San, the Minotaurs have been reputed to be somewhat controlled by the High Lords of Terra as their attack dogs who enjoy going toe to toe against other marines who have to be pulled back into line, take the Badab War for instance, the Space Sharks were the only other chapter as brutal!

I think a half buried skull with a tuft of grass next to it or growing out of an eye socket to show this is ancient battleground constantly being fought over.

Awesome job! I really like the dirtier metal choice over the usual bright bronze almost golden job that you see on other Minotaurs.

If you can find me a Dachshund figure I'll use it for sure! i've got a Labrador one I haven't painted.....

smallish update on the boards today, the Minotaurs one I made the upper balcony from Balsa and card and found some weird flippy bendy straw thingies with little balls on one end which I cut off to use as the supports, I pinned them all and then pushed the bases into the board and glued them. Next I added the top part by lining it up (best I could) and pushing it onto the pins

I wanted it to be textured like concrete or at least rougher than the rest of the floor so I used a can of Granite Spray from Dulux Duracoat range, it's not great as a product for terrain unless you're doing larger pieces since it is formulated to replicate rough granite, it's large finish would cover anything with fine detail but for this or even basing gaming boards it'll be fine and gives me something to drybrush the other thing to get this treatment will be a fountain for the front of the board which i'm building.

I think I need to add a backing board to it now? just a basic one maybe with the texture spray and a set of doors top and bottom? ideas?

now the spray coating.

and sitting in place. I'll be adding a strip of varnished Balsa along the top of the raining to add detail.

and while I was fiddling around I started washing RiTides Flotilla which gets no love since wash pics are boring for you guys and I started Asterion's HQ group, I had a real urge to do a quartered blue and metal scheme on an army so thought I could have a go by using the Libby as my outlet for that paint job the other 2 chappies are going to be more silver on the trim to be colder, with a few gold parts for good measure!

Suprise hairy sausage shot!

Also as a random after thought, how do you think i'd go learning to play 40k from scratch with this new edition? I hear the armies have entire points values lower as a whole now? eg. Az's Minotaurs are 25 points? i'm still pretty clueless but keen to start learning now rather than later!

Looking good good, that piece of scenery is looking epic.

I've only played quality couple of games, but it seems more streamlined as a whole compared to 7th. So you'Lloyd have no problem learning it, especially as everyone else is more or less in the same boat.

Start with smaller games would be my advice. Probably between 500 pts and 1000 pts, until you've got the rules down.

Thanks Doc, luckily one of my friends is quite the gamer so he will be helpful to have a smaller game with, plus i'm guessing there's still room for slight house rule adjustments? I think i've painted enough of his nurgle models to owe me a game!

Theo you god among men! I am totally getting that model!, I'll give it the gender re assignment surgery and add some more fuzzy face fur and then we'll be good! so i've now a Labrador, a Dachshund model but no suitable scale Samoyed/husky snow dog? .... you know what this means!? we need them so i can use them all as objective markers!!!! i'll show you the Lab one soon, I found him this morning and put him on a base and converted his leg so his paw is over the edge and gave him his blanket and a ball, looks good!

Cheers gits, I found it by accident, I was looking for a frosted glass film to give some privacy at our front entrance which has a narrow floor to ceiling window each side and came across a Dulux frosted glass spray which i went researching on the site and saw the granite spray and remembering the rough coat of old I thought it might suffice, but like i mentioned it's a lot heavier when applied so would be great for anyone doing scratch built ruins or buildings, it does need a lot of protection from overspray as this stuff goes everywhere but with some more experimenting we'll see what i can do with it!

Thanks San kandy is my little short legged shadow at the moment! you like the Libby!? that's good news for me I wanted to do a different Librarian with a jump pack so picked up the deathwatch one and tried to position him on the base so he looked slightly more dynamic or at least as if he's landed with weapons ready to hurl himself into the foe?

Nice to see you back around Elnibbus but you need to get your paint on man! miss your stuff!

I mentioned yesterday I was doing a fountain for the Mino's board, I started it using some good old plumbing parts from the hardware store so it'll be two parts until I glue it together, the main part i've just filed small channels in for water to cascade from the little pipes and i've pinned in a top cover, the whole thing will be granite coated so it will cover any imperfections nicely enough I'm going to make some little fish to swim in the resin I pour in the main fountain bed and experiment on how i can make the spouts of water look like they are pouring? also how to get the water to appear agitated where the water hits, so while it won't be perfect (whatever really is?) it will be a great little piece to learn and play with.

Now here's the part I need some help with! I wanted to add a statue on top like you'd expect and I couldn't find anything really suitable that wouldn't cost a heap of money or take ages to arrive here but I found an old Chimera I'd bought just because it was cheap a while back and I chopped him apart a bit in the vain hope of greenstuffing him slightly to become more Bull like and representing the Minotaurs my preference of aesthetics says I need the whole animal on his rear legs, but it is a bit overpowering and I think too large for it's purpose so I am proposing to cut him in half and his pose lends itself well to appear to be gripping the base with his forefeet pulling himself from the fountain? the chimera model will be getting the dremel treatment as well to smooth him out and add some shape and then i'll use GS to add more snout and horns and whatnot before he gets granited with the rest!

start of the fountain, little pipes!

the whole model on top.

and just half of him, keep in mind he's not positioned how he would be since he's kinda balanced there

Looks like a lot of work. The fountain is looking good, will look great once you have it painted. The water effects, I have had some success with evostik clear silicone.

Now how quick do you need a minator mini? I could send you something, but takes a while to get to you.

Hey Cam, thanks for the offer mate! :-) but I'm really trying to get them done or at least organised enough soonish as i'm off to Vegas for my wedding right around the comp time! i'll have a crack at the half a minotaur since it's not going to be really detailed just needs to give the impression really. but as usual i'd still like the feedback and ideas to be flowing, I'm feeling pretty calm doing the terrain stuff at the moment and am getting some more ideas, which is good because now i have my Minotaurs army primed and just a few other projects for other friends I can start looking at doing some gaming board terrain and playing around with the ultra clear resin again ;-0

Well in that case, the head needs to be bulkier, horns obviously and you are not far away. I personally go with patina bronze for the figure.

I have some Emperors Champions that are to rough to use as game models I've wanted to do similar with. Definitely looking forward to seeing it come together.

For water coming out of the pipes, I've seen people run a piece of fishing line and then put the water effects on top of it. Never tried myself though.

Just checking up on things.
Minotaur Captain: check, fantastic metal and a very angry look.
New Base : check, may have to buy some of that paint.
Fountain : check, is there anything about modeling that you can't do?

Getting married: check, wonderful news have a great time in Vegas!

Gentlemen, thank you for again keeping me buoyed to do more, Cam, i'm waiting for my friend to bring me back my little rotary tool so i can smooth and shave and shape the Chimer-ataur then i'll GS the snout and hooves and add some horns, which leads me to say if it looks good enough I might bronze and patina it as per Mr Whaley, if it looks crappy i'll just Granite it

Thanks Yorky, i'm glad things are all good too! Vegas will be wonderful but you know having time off for a wedding and honeymoon is going to mean i'll be missing out on hobby time it's going to be the hardest part! and is there anything modeling I can't do? yep, plenty! certain colours and techniques stump me and I still can't learn the damn rules to the actual game! but i'm always willing to have a crack at it, hence the water resin stuff i'm playing with, I get some cool ideas and just want to see them come to life, i've been watching plenty of tutorials and have decided to take bits of info from a few and turn them into my own style since they all vary from how people do running water, waterfalls, clear ponds, ripples, rapids etc. and i look at it and think I can just tweak it a bit it'll look better (hopefully).

So back to the fountain, I cut the chimera in half and test fitted how he'd look and i'm happy with that, if I feel the need I'll add some rubble to the top so it looks like he's been sculpted to be bursting from the fountain

and his left over legs will be turned into a plant....... yes, strange i know but i'm reading the old WD with the Catachan army in it and they had these really dodgy (by today's standards) guides to making scratch built death world plants like the man-eater and brain leaf!

and a little bit more on the Chaplain in Terminator armour and the Libby, just strengthening the colours and working on the black, hard to tell but the black is nearly done, another highlight and wash should do it since he's got so much extra details in the bling department to draw your eye, and the Libby i've started the metal and weathering and added a sepia tone, still loads to do but I felt I could update even if it was subtle!

Oh ..... space planes.

^ So it's not just me then Lol! expect to see a lot, I have an idea to make jungle or plants that fit in with the buildings some like a puzzle so if i want a board with overgrown ruins and random death plants i can put them on or if i want the normal ruined city I can leave them off, or if i want jungle terrain I can just use them!

I know you probably posted it already, but what colors/method did you use on the minotaurs paint colors. I'm thinking of doing something similar with my Ghar for beyond the gates of Antares.
