Breathtaking, no matter how far I zoom in I just can't find a flaw. The eyes are beautifully done. such a smooth gradient. The subtle but meaningful variation in tone from one metal to the next. Those beautiful touches of blue and purple on the guns. The whole thing is just a testament to the indisputable fact that you are one of the best. Amazing work Nerdy.

Wow the yellow is stellar. And where are the heads from?
9594
Post by: RiTides
The heads are from Anvil Industries (they don't sell them separately but you get 2 extra heads per set). I'm going to use the actual models they're from as Adsecularis which nerdfest will work on when the final wave happens
The familiar is from Blind Beggar Miniatures, and they've got some other cute robo critters, too
Whalemusic, that's a great point, although I'm just running these as Mechanicus and borrowing IW colors . There will be striping on the big models but straight yellow on the little guys.

Well thanks guys I'm glad I didn't disappoint anyone too much! they were all a blast to paint up and wave 3 will be suitably epic as well! I really love that metal finish too so much so that I might be using it on my own army this year and did anyone see the secret addition? I thought you'd be all over it by now!
The basic rundown on my metals is depending on the grime I want. black undercoat with a metal primer over the top then it's just washes washes washes.....and paint I start with Agrax, then Black then I add scratches and discoloration then I use Sepia, darken recesses with black again then scratch again and wash sparingly with Agrax again, I use thinned orange paint as a wash for rusts and for the Thanatar gun I used P3 Beaten purple in a few watered layers followed by a royal blue to get the burned look. then I washed it all with purple wash and highlighted
can't wait to see what the year brings us all and where the hobby goes, interesting times ahead I think (especially Cadia)
and in regards to the Annual Nerdcademy awards, you are correct, it is indeed nearly time for another one! I just need to find some models boxed for 2nd place and get another trophy printed! anyone want to donate

So, since I had a couple of days where I could have a break from painting I naturally started painting again this time I've begun a model for my Imperial Fists army Brother constantine, Contemptor Dreadnought! I tried a different way of weathering so far, I see a lot of painted on cracks and chips so I thought i'd try it properly on him and see how i go, doesn't look too bad when paired with my usual way
I'm waiting on another fist to arrive for him and i'm trying to find a plain contemptor head online but can't find one yet (I lost mine) so I'll paint what i can until then.
What do you think so far?

Also, since I'm pretty up to date with my models i'm free if anyone wants me to paint anything for them I feel like doing pretty much anything so send me a message if you need me!

There's actually two of these! You can see the last several pics have the front leg raised (and the clear rod nerdfest added to support the body is much taller than on the first). I'm guessing both didn't fit in the photo booth together though, they're rather massive!
I'm super happy with them and think they match the aesthetic (especially the Vultarax) really well! These are my long range fire support, and nerdfest added a barrel to the chin gun since the one that came in the kit was truescale and tiny (it blends in a bit on the black background but obvious if you look for it).
Fantastic work nerdfest, and thanks for sneaking in the moment to post pics

Where is the main gun? Under the chin? If so it's a bit underwhelming compared to the original. The model is very cool though and I'd be happy to blow them up!

Post by: JustaerinAtTheWall
These are some cool-lookin' models with some excellent paint-work, well done Nerdy! Where did RiTides get these minis again?
9594
Post by: RiTides
Solar, you're right about the gun, but it's partly because these models are just so big! Nerdfest never takes group shots so I'll take an army pic when I have them all together. But here's a WIP that he sent me of just the legs with the Thanatar and Vultarax:
I had thought about laser cutting a base for them at first, but that's obviously not possible given how far their legs stick out . Also, while they're bigger than the original tanks, it should be a disadvantage if anything - they're just bigger targets! So hopefully my opponents won't mind
Justaerin - These are from Industria Mechanika, they're getting more back in stock in a month or so, too!
27147
Post by: Solar_lion
Wow. they are massive.
No I wasn't worrying about Model for Advantage, but just in general scale. As for the gun it equally doesn't matter as long as it has a gun that you can determine range and firing arcs.
Yeah.. forgo the base.. very cool collection.

I don't comment much (my apologies for that) but whatever that thing was (and now meant to be) is truly spectacular. You should be very happy with how it has turned out.

Hey Archer! Thanks mate, but honestly the technique used on them was pretty basic for the most part, it just takes a bit of personal taste and patience the rough idea behind it is to give the weathering some depth by adding layers of weathering using just washes and Vallejo metal air silver. start with a full silver base coat whether it's a metal primer or a base of paint then wash with Agrax Earthshade, Nuln Oil then add some patches of metal by both fine detail brushing scratches and also using a slightly more watered paint and sort of blotching some parts on and wiping off to get an effect you like. then follow up with a liberal wash of sepia with the final scratches done with a fine brush. you can also go back with black and darker certain areas in shadow and use different inks for certain parts.
hope that helps you have a crack at it? like I said the theory is basic but it's a personal taste effect and you'll get a finish you like by playing around with that method if you try it please chuck up some pics here for us to see!

I am not, sadly :( I have an exam/lecture to give the first day, and all the dissertation writing to do afterwards. I think next year is going to be my year for Adepticon, as I should already have the job market poop pinched off, the book written, and can plan classes around it a little farther in advance. Unless we have another kid. Then I might just hide in RiTides' luggage forever As it stands now, I -might- be able to sneak out to Chicago with RiTides' the end of April for a Makerfair. I miss seeing people :(

So I mentioned that I've some more little projects coming up but I'd like the guys involved to chime in and let these people know what they each are getting me to do! So many cool different things such as salamander and robots and big robot leaders. That way it's twofold so I get a list to check on lol and you guys can give me some ideas of what you would like to see or how to paint them . It's going to be awesomeness especially since I've got an idea already for Gits Kastelan robots but I thinkit will be RiTides models again that are the most esoteric and whales transport models are going to look like green flowers of righteous death

No no, I just know you're " 40k'ed out" . However, these are for 30k... so it's totally different!
But seriously, I'm only partially joking, it seems a lot more balanced and everyone who I've seen playing it has been pretty cool!
nerdfest09 wrote:So I mentioned that I've some more little projects coming up but I'd like the guys involved to chime in and let these people know what they each are getting me to do!
I think I might've posted these a little way back, but the final wave for nerdy from me is: 4 Scyllax with flamers, 10 Adsecularis bots, 3 Myrmidons and 1 Armored Conveyor. You guys have seen the models for the Scyllax and Adsecularis already as nerdfest has done some, but the new stuff is here:
Only bummer is the transport (from the same company the big walkers are from) might be coming in stock later than they originally thought. It was supposed to be this week, but might be delayed up to 6 weeks since it was coming from China and CNY just happened... should've just had nerdfest go and pick it up for me rather than fly it across the world and back, right
So, not sure if he'll do the infantry separately or wait for the transport. Only thing I'm nervous about is the skin - hoping for a really dark skin, as there's no other exposed flesh in the whole army!
And I say last, but it will be really, really tempting to pick up some Adeptus Titanicus to match this army when that releases... I'm pretty sure all of us will be tempted, hopefully it will be popular as I could see myself playing that even more than 30k

Here's their site Alpharius, just to make the tempting easier

They've got some weird stuff on there! The things I'm using are from the "Mecha" and "Land" tabs.
Whalemusic, if the transport is delayed the full time or anything close to it, it probably can't be ready by AdeptiCon, so that's a good question. I can run a list without these infantry but it will be better with them

Thanks everyone! the Sallies are really getting there and should be done by weeks end! they look kinda meh until I start the actual highlighting of each colour and it spurs me on for the next one, I've just done the silver metals highlights on everything except the pods and next i'll do the golds and armour, after that it's all downhill from there with details and other spot colours :-)
I'll also try and get the rest of the reaver primed and start work on her in earnest, the plates I'll leave as is since there's so much more of her to love! and I don't want to do anything to them to ruin them, they'll be a nice contrast to the main body :-)

Most of them are from Lead Adventurer's new Astropolis line, highly recommended (that's a link to the Kickstarter but you can jump to their shop from there)
The first one however is from Blind Beggar Miniatures' Outlanders line. I love this little mini but in general the sculpting on the Astropolis models is better.
Astropolis is doing another campaign for more minis soon, and I can't say enough good things about how they fulfilled the first one! I'll post it up when they do as these make some great "civilians" too, something you rarely find for 30k - 40k.

Pretty much what happened to me too! the doors are too heavy and if they open too fast or at an angle they snap the hinge covering and then there's no room to pin or secure back together. I was forced to use GS and make a fairly unsightly solid mound to hold them on but hopefully it won't be too noticeable on the table.

Awesome. That's a whole lotta drop pods.

The dread pods are cool, but poorly designed for sure. The doors weigh a ton, and the resin holding them in place is very thin. They are also out of production now.

Mine Dread DP will not work without a total rebuild of the doors.
What Nerd has done for you should be a decent HH army. Part of the issue is getting things to where they need to go to be effective.

Thanks guys, she's coming along now I know there's a lot of fluff on how they should look with houses etc. but I wanted to do something really different and intricate, so the swirls got the nod the main body will be a darker metal with some usual glazes and detailing and more weathering on the lower parts of the legs but not too much, I may play around with powders but i'll decide on that later.
all I know for sure is this: I am going to either need to make my own wash from paint or buy a cubic foot of washes in various shades to finish this beauty no airbrush either, just a Nerd, a room a brush and a lot of music to get me through..... Man, Blackadder ought to commission you to paint up his Titan.
Also, on the pistons, you ought to put in a little oil-streaking. Bare, matte metal like that would rust super easily, so, especially on moving parts, they'd have annointed it with a layer of holy oils to prevent the degredations of time.
14392

Good times for the Mechanicum ahead, here on Nerdy's blog. Really astounded by the consistency with which you paint the swirls, truly a mighty feat!
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Those swirls were originally a lot finer but when I forgot a layer it made them nearly disappear so I had to go over them all again and needed to make them a bit bigger to make sure i covered them all. They do look really cool though :-) and today I based the rest of the parts that are having the white swirls on them so I can work on them.
really there's only a few more things to do if I break it down into parts.
*paint all the metal banding with brown/gold mix and wash with black
*add swirlies to the white panels
*paint crew and head interior
*start washing entire mechanical model under the panels.
*paint guns
I know that's seems really short but that's the stage I need to get to before I actually start to make it something special! so from here on I will need to add weathering and shades to different metals, scratches and chips and do the burns on the weapon arms, also all the banding needs to be done in gold highlighted up to silver in parts. then it's detailing with lenses and cables, dirt and verdigris or rusts, may use powders for the first time but i'm not sure yet?

Thank you so much guys she's a beauty for sure, if I could work out how to get a video onto the computer I would show you some of the updates I sent Gits to see through Messenger if anyone knows please tell me and I'll do it! as for first dance, as much as i'd love that honor I want her to rest in her rightful place among Gits forces, smiting down the heretic the traitor and the alien! what I want to see is her first blooding in a battle report with lots of pics!
I haven't done much more as far as details go, but I've been slogging through the metal banding going over them with gold, then I'll go with a gold/silver and highlight with silver on every one, so while it's a long game it is totally worth it in the end i've quartered the left knee and have a mechanicus logo to add on there but i'm not sure what spot colour to go with? at the moment it's dark grey which is a nice contrast but we'll work it out as we go, strangely the part i'm looking forward to is doing all the rivets and highlighting them then adding a little bit of water run discoloration on bits.
when she's finished I will see if i can get her together enough for a full body photo shoot but in reality she'll probably be fully assembled when she's in her new home with Gits so I can wrap and ship her safely in a box the size of a bedroom so you'll have to settle for many individual pics from me

Cheers guys, Greyfax was a real joy to paint up, females are a different feel to space marines and guard and to give her a feminine quality without her looking too armoured, I think the metals being softer hued do that? her face was a nice challenge and it's been ages since i've done a bare head so I literally had to remember how I did it Lol!

Now before anyone gets shirty and cries "Not again Damo!" just hear me out..........
O.K I'm going to move on from the Imperial Fists as a playable army, I am going to sell what I have and what i've painted to fund my Minotaurs army I love the Fists but with work and life at the moment they are taking too long to paint and i'm losing my mojo for working on them, the sad part is I really really want an army that I can finally play games with and I think i've nailed the army and the inspiration thanks to RiTides and Whaley in part. the Minotaurs scheme is Oh so similar to the effect on RiTides Admech stuff and I LOVE the look of that worn metal, I know I can do it fairly fast and I can do a squad or two while i'm painting for other people and still progress at a pace that will enable me to have a game later this year.
So, if you want to buy the Fists or know someone who needs a good fisting then shoot me an offer i'll probably take pics and pop them in the swap shop tomorrow.
But what I want you all to REALLY do is get me pumped with ideas and conversions, squads and ideas for the Minotaurs please!
So sorry to jerk you around again on the SM front but this time I will sign a contract in my own blood or paint that I will produce a large playable Minotaurs army full of great ideas, conversions, heads and models!

Cool idea . I have a Minotaur terminator libby for our deathwatch campain, and gave him a round shield and a spear for a force weapon(phalanx-style). It immediately adds a lot of 'greek' feel to it. Helmets with crests would also be a nice touch.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
I'm thinking of following Az and using some Temistokle heads among them, and some round shields and crests as well as maybe some Greek-esque facial tattoos? probably crests on sergeants. I know it doesn't 'really' matter but am I given reign to mix mks of armour in a Minotaurs force? fluff says they're highly loaded with all the good gear so would they technically have dudes running amok in Mk3 etc?

Excellent work! The rust is a beautiful contrast to the pale green of their skin. Good times are ahead here for nurgle, DG ftw!

Great stuff Nerdy. I like the Maulerfiend of Nurgle in particular . Looks suitably gribbly without making people have to guess what it is on the tabletop.
Will you be getting any of the new shiny Death Guard plastics? (Cult Terminators, Nurgle cultists, new plastic DG tactical squad)

Awesome stuff as well.
I thik the Minotaurs are great. Though as a Lamenter player don't look for any support for our chapter.
I suggest you become an official Warder and get out to Adepticon.

Nurgle is certainly fun to do, i've plenty of things I want to incorporate into the job for him even though he's only after a standard sorta job i'll do some things I think will look suitably creepy I'm not sure as yet if he'll look to get any new stuff when it's launched but I'd safely say he will
Solar, I'd love to be a Warden I also have every intention of coming along one year soon!

So if I were to have these models, what would you do/add to make them a good little force against other marines?
* Asterion Moloc
* 10 man tac squad
* 10 man tac squad
* 10 man assault squad j/pack
* 2 Rhino transports
* 5 Sniper scouts
* Predator tank lascannon bolters.
* 5 Lightning claw termies
* Command squad
* Dev squad w/5/Missile

I think Moloc and the LC Termies or Command Squad needs a suitably beefy transport, something like a LR Crusader/Redeemer or even a Spartan which would fit the theme perfectly.

Thanks Cheese! I saw that conversion online and thought I want to paint that so I was lucky the mate I sold my Nurgle too wanted the same

Yes Az, I am, I work full time shift work all over the place where I work and in my down time I pretty much just paint to unwind, i've got a pretty good routine going with each of my schemes and colours so I organise myself like that

Cheers Para, you inspired me with some of your grittier works since I tend to lean towards clean I wanted inspiration and found it in your blog the models were assembled when they got to me, I work sooooo much faster that way

Thank you so much for the kind words and comments! I really try to get a certain 'feel' to what I paint, and I always make sure the way I paint them is easily replicated or learnt by others, so if there's any certain thing I can help you out with just ask me! it's all just learning a certain way to layer the colours

Thank you, the rust just gives that little spot of colour and lifts the green doesn't it!

Whoah! top bananas!! that is HIGH praise indeed lol! Thanks Jan, they do look frickin sweet all together. Automatically Appended Next Post: So FW don't make any Minotaurs transfers anymore :-( I can't pop off pads on a tac squad to replace them. what options do I have? could I potentially just paint the pad red with a lamda on it or something or will that look odd mixed in?

Arrroooooooooooo!!! the sky warriors of Fenris have landed! just finished up a bunch of my Tabletop/Character level guys for a local player who I hope to have a game against one day this year! You'll see I've focused on a few main areas, namely a nice highlight to the armour and a more shaded look to the faces for contrast which gives more reason for me to keep the extra details in similar darker colours heavily shaded I think they look pretty nice all grouped together and will hopefully lead their wolf brethren into many sagas to come.
My two personal favourites are the old school original Njal Stormcaller model it just has a great balance to it with posing and presence on the table bringing down the storm onto his foes! and I also really like the new Ulrik the Slayer model, I did something a little different with him by keeping him nearly all dark and black/grey to help emphasise his role within the chapter his armour and cloak only subtly highlighted and his face and extra details used to bring him to life.
all in all I'm pretty happy for the look on these guys at this level and I hope they will be used plenty!
Smile, group shot!
Old school Logan Grimnar
Iron Priest
Wolf Lord on puppy
New version of Njal StormCaller
Wolf Pelt Banner Bearer
Arjac Rockfist
Old Njal looking hella tough!
Ulrik the Slayer
There you go guys hope you like them too!
