Easy, silver base, then wash black, then wash agrax use silver to add scratchy bits then wash sepia and black in recesses. adjust washes and scratching to suit.

So the dodgy greenstuff worked enough and the statue looks pretty good, well, good enough for the board and then as a scatter terrain piece I cut some foam board for the jagged rocks and roughly greened (or rather, brownstuffed) a different snout and some ears and hooves and used Ghaz Thraka's horns left over from when I built him up!
Then I gave him two coats of granite coat, which I may add does actually dry a lot smaller than originally applied and didn't exactly hide the details as much as I thought it would once dried I primed it and painted it with no real plan, I just went for stone appearance and weathered as I saw fit to hide the ugly parts the next step is the water effects if there's nothing else needed for the main fountain? I did consider continuing the mossy lichen into tendrils of Ivy wrapped around parts? or adding small flowers in the mossy base? but I don't want to be too ott
WIP Pics.
and after a bit of work today, this is where it stands, i did indeed use some clump foliage wixed with wash to make the lichen/moss
and I primed and brushed over the balcony too, it looks pretty much like plain Balsa again but it's not, and is textured which I tried to show in the pics, I also stuck some balsa strips on top of the railing and across the bottom which will offset the pale stone once it's varnished a dark stain.

Really nice work bud, don't be so down on the sculpt, looks pretty great to me.
I may be late, so sorry, but may I suggest some staining from the pipes prior to the water effects. Just a very loose wash to add the effect of water damage over the millennia.

Post by: nerdfest09
The Armies on parade is in October but I want to complete them in advance since I'm going away, still the Nurgle board to do but I think that will take some Damo-esque thinking to get a good balance of gross and believable with a hint of cool! :-)
Cam, I will have a look at that as i'm pouring the resin tonight for the first layer in the bottom, just gotta find some fishing line to run the resin down for the spouts. and then I should probably paint the actual army!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also I need to buy Yvraine to paint, does anyone out there either know of a cheap box or someone who doesn't need her? Now the question is this, is the yellow painted with too much contrast? the tabard should be yellow because he's a librarian but my style looks a bit stark on him compared to Asterion?
cheers guys, lets see what you think! I also got word I'll have another FW Titan to paint this week! Only a Warhound though....

I think the tabard looks great, Damo. The contrast is stark, but it fits with the rest of the model.

Post by: nerdfest09
I think I might do it black and the raised detail in yellow? it's almost too bright for the overall look I feel? because once the armour is painted it's very gritty and dark, this might just be a bit much, I might shade it a bit first though and see what it looks like :-)

So just got my FW book with the updated sheets in it and i'm really peeved on one thing :-( Ivanus Enkomi used to be able to have a jump pack and sword with his fist which is how I modeled him to boost the assault squad, so I need to change the model up a bit now and change his head and sword i'm guessing (i'm not sure what a normal Chaplain should have or can have)? and then build another Enkomi as a standard one with a fist and crozius? looks like my Mino's are going to be Chaplain heavy.

Yes, they did do that - but this is a wholesale change to their Terms of Service.
Basically, unless you open up a pay account with them, you will not be linking to other sites from Photobucket anymore.
I see people listing Imgur as an alternative, but I thought they didn't play nice with linking too?

I'm in the process of moving all of my blog's photos (5 years here, 7 years on wordpress) to both Imgur and Wordpress, both of which are really easy to use. Photobucket can go feth itself with this dick move. I expect that they'll back off somewhat from a backlash, but trust is broken and bridges are burned. Damo, you can still access all your old pics, and even if you've not got the energy to repair your years of blogging here, I'd still recommend that you spend an afternoon downloading them all so you've at least got them yourself.

and while this isn't overly exciting it's still progress on RiTides massive fleet! all the larger ships are now base coated with the bone colour, i'm going to use my finger method to play around on these when wiping the wash off the top which then leaves the base as the highlight to work on before I weather them.

I finished mt Chaplain! started my Minotaurs and found a new way to paint faces! pretty decent day I'd say so let's start with Mr Hatred.
I found a way to paint faces with only washes and while I was skeptical about it at first I'm really pleased with the result and the speed and ease of it! there;s a few steps to do it but it's not hard.
Liquid GS some rough hair on a bald head then prime and paint a light flesh colour.
a watery bloodletter glaze in the eye sockets and ears.
a purple/blue wash watered down and placed in eyes, hair and jawline.
watered down agrax over everything.
skin tone and black wash mixed together to do stubble.
paint hair dark grey.
mix agrax and seraphim sepia and wash over everything.
do metal and black details and done!
So firstly I'll show you my normal way I do the faces on a marine you've seen before.
and the new way.
And the beginning of the Minotaurs painting! I thought i'd better start them since I was washing stuff and base coating ships and they provided a nice distraction so far they have been washed in Nuln Oil and then the reds were painted and everything was all washed in Agrax

Nice start on the Minotaurs there, and the Chappy looks great. I believe I saw the same YouTube video just a couple of days ago, as well. It certainly gives a good effect from what seems like a dubious series of steps, doesn't it?

Post by: Paradigm
I've been using a similar method on and off for a while now it's main advantage is it keeps the actual number of layers of paint really low, which helps for faces were the detail is a little shallow (like Greyfax, for instance. Very small face with hardly any defined features). I think for larger, more defined heads like most SM models, the more traditional method is superior, but it's a good one to have in the arsenal for sure.
Minos are shaping up nicely!
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Yeah I actually really like how it looks! great for more gritty marines and in some cases a better looking face for the model, I think it'll serve the Mino's well and certainly means I can do a heap at once! :-) maybe even tomorrow!? but first thing in the morning i've got to move the Nerd lair around for better feng shui and light for this time of the year! then get cracking on priming the last of RiTides ships and getting some more done with the bone layer on the hulls!

Thanks Az! i've got most of the good ones from my 2nd PB account but i'm yet to go back to my first NF09 account and get grabbing! i'll hopefully get some time tonight. but until I do do you want to see some updates?
I started a few of the bare heads I needed to paint in the new style, I will go back to them all and add some more highlights and do a few more Damo-ish work on them but to get them all to this stage so damn fast is brilliant! and they look fine as they are when popped into some armour! so I strongly suggest those who hate painting them to try this way it's a doorway to a better life
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xk7cLxTAtJ8
and I washed some more of the Minotaurs Terminators, they are looking more bronze now and I added Asterion into some pics as a comparison. I went back in and added some scratches and then washed them with Sepia, next i'll go back to add black into the recesses and to bring some detail out and then do a final silver highlight, are they looking suitably Minotaurs? and do they hold up colour wise with asterion?
I reckon they all will look like a great and brutal force done like this! only a couple of months until they need to be finished ..... nah! i'll get them done easy! just need to finish RiTides fleet! which I may add i've been busily painting bone on the hulls again today and also priming the last 8 ships, I thought they'd be slightly easier task than what they have been so far very repetitive and fiddly painting on multiple models is hard until you get to the fun stuff like highlighting, edging and weathering! then they'll be worth showing you.

Thanks Cam, I like the dirtier look to them too :-) it's believable enough for the bronze and it looks worn which I think appeals to their fluff being hyper aggressive marines and the plus side it's also fast to do! once the reds get some love and the faces finished they'll really pop I hope, I hope the red bolter casing on the tac marines will be enough of a spot colour along with their lenses to make them stand out.

Awesome gits, that'd be good if you can I used Pallid Wych flesh as my highlight which is very light and i'd us a red/brown with the flesh colour for the lower lip also a fine argax wash just to define details if needed. and that's about it on top of that method. go for gold and post your experiment up for us

Hey guys, I have some more work in progress stuff today! I'll start by mentioning that I am indeed still working somewhat feverishly on RiTides fleet of ships but they are quite fiddly and when you have about 50+ of the buggers it can take a while for not much visual progression, so far they have been primed, silver and washed Nuln Oil, then i've used Dheneb Stone on all the bone areas of the main hulls and now i'm working through them with a grey wash over the bone parts to give a subtle shade and to help the colour look better since the stone is quite a chalky finish, once that's done on all of them I'll use the Dheneb again to start the edging and some of the subtle damage then work up to a bone white and then damage the heck out of them with oodles of great ways!
But for today you get stuck with my Minotaurs again, I did the red on them yesterday and touched up today before work, like i mentioned earlier it's great how such a simple scheme and style can pop with the addition of only one other colour! there's not much more on them to do really, the lenses and completing the faces as well as a yellow bolter stripe sarge's finery and basing still, I really hope they still look good enough and cool enough to have people say "hey, they're cool"
And the rather belligerent Hekaton Aikios is coming along as well
What are your thoughts on them all together? with Asterion as a comparison ?
and my arm arrived for Ivanus Enkomi! now his pose is right!

Boy do I have good news for you! The paints do the work for you now. Put it on thick and it dries into the cracked earth look. Which is why I suggested he paint the base with something other than black first.
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Texture-Martian-Ironcrust-24ML
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Texture-Martian-Ironearth-24ML
And then he stuck some of this fancy self adhesive grass on there.
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Mordheim-Turf

Correct me if that's off Damo. Figured I'd save some linking action for you.

Those face look amazing . I will be forever grateful if I can get that formula to work for me.
Does he use both texture paints on the bases?
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
Looks like just the first. It is a bit thicker, so makes bigger cracks in the earth. Pretty sure they are actually the same paint, the second just has more water in it. If you thin down the thick one when you use it, it makes smaller cracks.

Go brown or a different shade of red/orange.
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
You can even still prime black, but I'd put a layer of brown or rust red down or whatever you want the color that will show through to be before the texture paint. Alternatively (or additionally), you can paint on top of it if you wanted a different color scheme since GW only offers it in the martian red color.

Lol thanks guys, the bases are painted Charandon Granite before the Martian Ironearth technical paint so while it's not black showing through it does look pretty dark (sorry Whaley i'll do better next time) and then I washed them with Agrax Earthshade and added some grass clumps from The Army Painter. the heads really don't look that bad but I'm guessing the final pic the angle is not great for looking good but good for showing the face with that new technique! :-)
I also wish FW still made the decals :-( i'd sell my left nut for some to put on them, I did try adding some stripes to break it up but I couldn't for the life of me get straight edges no matter what I tried, so red it is until I can find something.

You're SM worries are reasonable. I doubt we will get many new kits that aren't Primarus Marines in the near future. You are forgetting one important thing though, and that is Horus and his heresy. At the very least, you will see FW continue to put out models for that in the traditional Marine scale. And with both box sets from GW proper selling very well, don't be surprised if they do more. It will just take a minute for the hype to calm itself.

Damage on space fleet looks awesome . My only question was on the overall brightness / color of the hull, are these darker than the test model or is it just the pic (or do they brighten up in the final step)? Great work

This is true. Expect no respite from Forge World's Horus Heresy line - and frankly all of the new marines we've had in the last few years have been either from FW or FW-based via the boxed sets, so it's all good.

Hey guys, i'm gonna leave the talking up to you this post I've just got home from work at 2am I was going to update if I had a chance during my shift but the work computers block the postimage site
So here's a couple of quick pics of my Minotaurs casualty/pbjective marker, not the best paint on the details but meh! he's in pretty grave condition and I still hope he's cool I like the head swap from the original skull to a similar scratched visage as his chest.
and for some more Mino love here's the armour done on the first Tac squad! great technique for a quick main colour scheme and I love it!
So now it's your turn for words! speak up and keep me inspired!

Hey dudes I got my Tac squad for the Mino's finished this morning! a nice little squad if I do say so! still some more squads to do before I have enough for my Armies on Parade board with them but i'm well on my way.
I also found some foam for the rear wall of the display board so i'm currently waiting for it to dry after I sealed it with a weird mix of wholemeal flour, water and white glue then i'll work out the doors and details, texture and then paint it up and that will finish the board all except some light weathering then I can test fit some models and see how it looks!
I'm still keen on using them to nail some of those stupid Primaris marines! I hope FW give the Mino's some decent usable traits!

So am I Moltar, taking on 3 is a decent challenge this year even though i've planned them to be fairly easy to build if something goes wrong then i'm going to struggle to finish in time! I had another look at the Mino board and now I want to add some pennants or banners which is another layer of interest to the board but I'm not 100% on how best to do them yet, i'm sure i'll work it out though :-)
and I know this is really a random thought but with the new edition of 40k it seems that the majority of angst is being caused by the implementation of the new Primaris models and the way the rules don't align well over the two sub factions in regards to wargear and traits etc. This is only my opinion from reading the threads frequented by the gamers who actually play (not me just whinging about my mini marines) so would 8th be better if they hadn't tried to add the new models into the mix? 'cos it seems even more confused now than before!

Now that's a good question! Kolinsky Sable usually but any brush that has a firm set of bristles that ends in a good point will do, usually #0 up to a size #1 but I have been known to use even the most munted of brushes with bent tips as long as I know how they behave in my hand, for my eye lenses I have an old brush that's got a mean curve but it makes it easy to paint the blends with it's shape (I should shock you with some brush images! )

Cheers guys! Ramos I gotta admit I did laugh when you mentioned the top brush as my face brush! :-) made me want to try it and see how i go!? ....... (you know I will now)
Moltar, thank you too sir! I quite like these ships even though they are quite repetitive as a whole I think the hard chipping actually suits them and once I get them on a black background they'll look proper :-)
Today was once again adding the line highlights to plenty of ships, so not much to show but I also made some progress on the rear wall on the Mino board, i started again using proper foam this time and it's much better, I glued the doors on and gave it all a coat of plaster filler which i'm waiting to dry before I say if it indeed has worked! wish me luck!

Post by: RiTides
The damaged fleet is looking so awesome! I think it contrasts the high tech look of the models themselves really well, and like Ramos said, no one seems to do it so it's a really unique look for the force
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Well I'm glad you like them RiTides! since they are your fleet of spacey flighty death pew! I'll get them all chipped and then some smokey burn marks and some gouges in a few then i'll be happy as the hard part will be done then.
I have some wip on my AoP boards again, I've started work on the rear wall of the Mino board and I'm pretty happy so far with it, I wanted to do something pretty basic with a little detail that would accent the army on the board and I think the two gold circles will be the little touch (when they get finished) I was a little peeved that I noticed some pillars had moved after I glued them probably due to a rampaging sausage banging into the models hopefully it's not detrimental to the board though.
and I started the basis of the Nurgle board, first time using expanding foam and i've got the main shape all done!
what's your thoughts guys.

LOL good advice I'll certainly take on board next time!
The rocks are really easy! it was a small can of expanding foam (about $8) and shaped with a steak knife, i'll go over the lot with a watery plaster filler mix which will seal them for priming and then that's all apart from paint if you wanted to make your own rocky barricades or anything similar.

Thanks Cam, the space fleet of floating angry space cars is still chugging along, I think it's stressing me because it does take time to do the same effect on every one and it feels like i'm not moving fast! once I shade and do the blue pods they will pop a bit more and i'll feel more confident with them, my main concern is doing a job that isn't 'Nerdy' enough, I may not be a professional painter but I really enjoy doing things for others and when they entrust me to do a good looking job in good time I try my best to bring their dreams to life so they can play with a force they really enjoy looking at!

I have nearly finished the Mino board as well, i've added some propaganda posters and attached the back board, i'll dust some powders over it and call it done after I do the banners
I popped the finished models on just to get a feel of how it will look, I'll definitely need at least another Tac squad and perhaps the other 5 Termies? or perhaps Assault marines? it all comes down to timing before I go away!
and while there's no pics, I have finished the chipping on the dark sky star avoiding flying phallic rockets.

The only thing that detracts from the display is that their bases don't match. Might be something to keep in mind for next year, especially if you do a force specifically for the display.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Well, thank you captain negative :-( they have obviously just kicked in the door waving the 44 and still have sizable clumps of outdoors on their feet! duh! you didn't realise this?
I didn't match them as I wasn't planning on doing them outside on the board but my overall theme with them is that basing style, I wanted to make a more indoor structure but next year I'll do something cool, I think I learn more each time and find new things to try with them, perhaps if I didn't set myself the goal of 3 boards I could do a really cool board with one! imagine a Harlequin army set up in a webway lit with perspex and leds?!
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
Always gotta throw something in so it just isn't oohhs and awwws
I think the trick would be making the bases and the board at the same time. It would take a ton of planning, but some of the most impressive AoP displays I've seen have had it. Might be better to make temporary bases even, and switch them to play bases that fit the rest of the army later. Just something to think about next year.

Post by: nerdfest09
I am already thinking of next years board and I think I want to do a fully enclosed board that is an Eldar webway that's lit from various points and made of different light reflecting and transparent surfaces but you look at it through an eyepiece like the old 80's View Master and you see inside this diorama display of Harlequins dancing around wisps of ether. I think it will take a lot of clear resin, cellophane, leds, ghost tint and clear acrylic and a small warband of Harlies
perhaps you can help me with some reference material? and images you guys know of that convey that side of the eldar? or webways?
I got a fair way through the gravity defying pew pew sides and roaring flame pushers today! got every one of them shaded with black wash/ink so now I'm feeling much better about them all, i'll do the highlights on the metals and then just the engine panel things and then we'll see where or how many to do further damage on
and I started washing Tac squad number 2 for my Mino's and primed the Nurgle board.

I'm happy to have a practice Russ, he's meant to be done to a fairly good TT standard so I'll be able to have a play around with him and colours, yours would be much darker and more iron like. the Duel would be an amazing model to paint up and I think I'd go full sick on it!

Minos banners are a little rough, yes, but I think that works to them being battered and weathered. Makes them less of a focal point as well, so that everyone is focussed on the beautiful models!

Looks like I may have to leave my Ork board for next year, I had a good look at what models I can legitimately put on it for display and because I use a lot of SpellCrow parts I don't think I am going to have enough GW to tip the balance in favor but the bonus means I have 2 boards to enter and they're done! so I can focus on other things to get finished up! it may give me time enough to add some more models for the Mino board!

They use lower tier paint jobs so it seems more realistically reachable for novice painters. Guess you'll have to try it out when you paint them up.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
It takes away from how potentially good something is imo, if the paint doesn't draw me into a model then I tend to skim it over and not bother, or at least they can include an unpainted version next to it. these aren't kids toys they are gaming and modeling pieces for mature collectors! I think it's something unique to the Forge World/Specialist Games department, you can see the same on some of the FW Blood Bowl bits. It's an interesting style, I quite like the almost impressionist look and it probably requires a fair bit of artistic flair to pull off (definitely seems more complex than it looks at first glance), but it really doesn't show off the models all that well. It'd be fine as a display piece, but to have it as the standard marketing pics would be like showing off new Space Marines but with all the metals in Sky-Earth NMM, it's technically impressive but so far removed from what 99% of painters will be doing with their minis that it's not the best way to advertise. Actually, looking again, something really weird is going on. The style is consistent, but there's a massive difference in terms of quality between the autogun Escher (pretty basic) and the pistol one (much better technically speaking, leaving the style aside)... Odd! Still, can't wait to see what you do with them, I look forward to... ahem.... drawing inspiration from them... Back to your own work though, I really like what you've done with those ships. I'm getting a real Mass Effect/Halo hard sci-fi vibe from them which is great.

Russ' armor is gorgeous, and the glow on the tip of his sword makes me think of ice, which fits their wolf concept. If I were a dog I'd be humping his leg for sure

Post by: nerdfest09
Firstly i'd like to welcome Sigur back to the fold glad to finally see you on here again!
and everyone else, thanks as always, Russ I agree would benefit from a better beardy face or stubble but it was all glued together so I didn't have as much freedom as i'd liked with him. If I were to do him again i'd still follow a similar scheme but give his armour a more 'paint over metal' look and really bring the details up by doing more on his belt, cloak banding on the armour. This version is a table top sort of level so he looks good but the small stuff doesn't get as much love
I'm still working on my Mino's Predator and assembling Gits Crawlers so I can get into them soon.
so not much to show at the moment but gimme a week and i'll give you an update!

The reds look much better now, but I can't unsee what Whaley pointed out - just how heavily battered the bronze of the tank is while the red still looks perfect. I think a bit of weathering on it as you did with the AdMech stuff a little while ago would bring it all together and unify the paintjob really nicely. Wouldn't need to be nearly as heavy as on the bronze, but a bit would even out the two elements.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
True, true but I haven't got to that part yet :-) there will be some light scratches on the reds but I needed to get the main part done first before I go back in.

Post by: Azazelx
Of course, and now that you've said you're going to scratch it up I'm much more relaxed.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
And I think I may give some scratches another sepia wash and tone them down a bit, on the top of the hull seems to be a little too damaged now I look at it some more :-)

Great work Damo. The scratches on the red unify the whole thing nicely - and toning down the damage was also a good call.

Post by: nerdfest09
Thanks Az, I'm much more happy with it now too, it needed toning down slightly and just a small amount of scratches on the red is all it needed, nothing too in your face but it ties together much better, makes me look forward to a nice meaty land raider :-)

Thank you Cam, Graven, Gits, I'm definitely going to add to the vehicle pool in the future and maybe even get a biker squadron? are they any good? I've never enjoyed painting the SM bikes but I feel I could tackle them with this paint style without getting annoyed and it would give me an excuse to do some bike bases as if they are banking etc which would be fun :-)
I'll be doing some more on my Mino's soon and also i'll be able to post up some finished 'tabletop' Warhound pictures! I say tt only because i've painted the two main areas, being the armour and the metal underneath so I haven't picked out details like pipes and cables and kept the palette simple but damn it looks cool :-)

Do jet bikes instead, if you need some conversions just ask bud. That way they can fit in your cool display and battle on the table.
Looking forward to seeing a properly painted WH.

I miss a few days of checking in on Nerdy and he has all sorts of great work going on. Russ is outstanding, a bit of stubble is not such a big problem he probably shaved just before purging all those T sons.

O.k here's something a bit different from me today! I attempted to record and edit a video for youtube showing how I do my Minotaurs armour it's my first video I've done so don't judge too harshly, it's about 20 mins on purpose since it's real time for how I do them, if I was doing a squad it would not take much longer as they would each dry as I worked on the next one.
Hope it's o.k and gives some people something to try!

Thanks Moltar, The Mino's are great for me! fast to paint and still look effective and brutal which means I can grow the force in the future if I so choose! and the Hound was really fast to paint too if I hadn't faffed around and left it so long, I originally primed it and washed it with the acrylic wash but wasn't sure how to proceed so I left it in the shed for weeks until I HAD to finish it, but once I got back itno it it took 2 days so I could have had it done a long time ago!

Thanks Knightley, I toned down my usual lingo for the video in case I alienated anyone, maybe I should just let it flow? I thought it a good place to start since my mantra has always been to find and use techniques that are really easy and anyone can use to their benefit and my brushes are indeed pretty much all munted but they're family so I love them.

Crawlers are looking sharp- cant wait to see them on the tabletop come Adepticon
And that base is PERFECT! You really chose your colors well on that, and as always the execution is superb. Good touch with that little tuft of grass stuffed in the crack- really makes the base come alive.

First individual termi needs part of an imperial guardsman under that metal piece like he's stomping it shut on the dudes head. The forth termi needs a Titan foot coming down on him because he looks like he's about to get stomped . It is an amazing white you pulled off.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Cheers boys! I have to say the palette cleanser Red Butchers are indeed a nice change but they are very detailed with chains and spikes and the white really does take a while, it's a colour I've not really worked on much over the years and I have always preferred a dirtier white so I thought i'd give it a go I also wanted to give them a brutal feel with the blood and dirt without going over the top on them which I also think I did right on the more advanced guy.
and thanks for the compliments on that base too! I found the broken resin friezes in my bits box and thought they looked sorta old, what better way to use them than a Mino base! shame I couldn't use it for Aikios since he was already done and pinned so I got another one just for the base and I did also add a couple of small bits of the frieze to Aikios base to tie them together.
So really now I only have the World Eaters to play with and my Mino terminators, dread and command to finish up and I can just wait until I get Alpharius' models or work on my own stuff more

The armour had to be white, but it had to be weathered and grimy, not dirty and decrepit like Death Guard but still battered and serviceable keeping in mind these guys don't ever leave it, and they just get hung up in the bowels of a ship frothing and straining to be unleashed again on the field of battle.
I also wanted to get his face to show the snarl and strain of the single mindedness he endures along with reddening around the chains in his head. the pose I like angled like this as if he's moving at speed through the debris using the terrain to force himself off towards you.
so here's a few pics of the first finished guy!

Loving the progress since I last stopped by. The Dunecrawlers are top shelf and I love the purple weathering on the end of the guns.
Your Minotaur armour colour is really nice. Although personally I feel a little too much silver is showing through on the terminators. The Contemptor is looking beautiful already.
The World Eaters are really cool. I have been toying with an idea of doing a Bezerker army as a World Eater warband that is so bloodied they appear red over the original white armour. I think you have almost achieved what I am looking for with these guys. But I plan to coat them head to foot with only a little bit of the original colours showing through. Keen to see them finished to see if I can steal your work.....

Post by: nerdfest09
Theo I think the claws will end up o.k the plan is light at the tips and really dark at the base so it won't be as obvious as if they're sporting weaponized Eggplants. (Omg! Vegan Marines!!)
now with my hobby progress I mentioned I was up to date with my work for others and I am so I'm slowly relaxing and compartmentalizing what i'm going to do next, obviously my own Minotaurs army will feature until they're done and I have to buy more models!
I also sold my gaming board and have a blank table in the garage, I also threw in my terrain (a lot of it) to sweeten the sale, so I now need to build and paint more gaming terrain and another table! my idea for the table layout is using cork tiles in a 4x4 to add cracks and distressed features with only a light coat of filler over them, this will enable me to still place buildings level and form a solid base for any Necromunda shenanigans if they happen :-) also one day in the future I plan on owning a FW Zone Mortalis set so the 4x4 section will also let me place the tiles on there nicely.
So, what have you got to look forward from me?
*My own Minotaurs army
*Alpharius' Alpha Legion army
*gaming table build and detail
*terrain from Deadzone and scratch built
*3 Characters for RiTides
*4 Kastelan for Whaley that have languished far too long.

You know Nerdy, I really love the way the brownish "older" metal works with the stark silver scratches and highlights. Really nice job on that. Purple claws are cool too... love me some purple! I do think the pristine red is a big incongruous when compared with the heavily damaged metals... but that's your call. It certainly does make them look striking and points out the quality of your blending capability.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Thanks Gits, I know the reds probably need some damage but I kinda just like the look of the contrast :-) plus I like to think the armour isn't 'beat up' per-se but sort of showing light dings and imperfections that they've just buffed over and kept as a badge of honor. plus did I mention the red looks good against the metal? :-)

The Minos command and Contemptor look great, but I have to agree with the others. Just the smallest amount of scratches would bring the shoulders together and unify them with the rest of the squad's armour. Similar to what you did with the Predator, essentially.

Post by: nerdfest09
So I have bought a couple of the Deadzone terrain building kits over the last few weeks and just started mucking around with them good kits for the price, pretty basic assembly and not as detailed or flush fitting as GW but I can certainly let that slide since I'll be weathering and dirtying them up for a combined 40K/Necromunda style of building so any imperfections are not going to bother me rather than the overarching image they provide.
Although basic to build and work with a set of instructions even basic would have helped me organise my parts, it seems I've used a railing part as a half floor on one part and i'm not 100% on what's floor or wall or how to set it up for ladders in a design, but again for the price i'm happy to just make this up as I go along but if anyone can help me identify what's a wall/floor/railing/ladder hole?
The plan is to get a basic collection of square buildings built, one two and three level structures with areas I can then add walkways to connect them for Necromunda play and also have them placed normally as 40K terrain. I will be making my own walkways for the majority when i get to that part, but this point i'm just seeing what i can make.
Colour scheme is quite possibly a ochre yellow this I believe will look good done over the terrain and lend itself to weathering really well (I mean just look at Dave's stuff!) also since my Minotaurs are a dark metal and the board base will have a red dust element I think this colour will offset the models rally well!
I'll try and get enough badly built terrain to show you tomorrow I have plans that means you won't really notice I hope when it's finished.

Yeah I can be a perfectionist but if I let that lapse then I seem to just go the other way completely i'm like 'it's not really straight and it doesn't look quite right..... nahhhh she'll be right with some paint!..... hmmm about those sprue points I forgot..... ahhh what the hell it's character building!'

Hello there NerdFest, your Minos are just fantastic, the weathering on the bronze armour looks fantastic.
But this guy.....I have a huge softspot for Pre-Heresy World Eaters. You have brought him to life, when I read a Horus Heresy book with World Eaters in it this is how I picture them. Great model and great painting. I would love to see more of these guys.

Thanks guys, so we're thinking at this stage, either the Greek head (it'll be painted properly) or the Tech bionic head so far? I was thinking the Rebreather head for the same reason Whaley looks a bit more techmarine. but then the Greek head gives him that calm confidence that I think the Mino's have in spades
I'll try and do some more on the tanks this arvo, it'd be nice to have them done as well, it means if I paint some Assualt marines I can have a game in my holiday time! after I build a game board that is but that'll only take me a day.
