LoER Terrain Contest: Round 29 "Food for thought!" Results! @ 2019/05/08 19:58:14

Post by: Camkierhi

Welcome to the 29th instalment of the League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain Competition!

This is a terrain building competition, hopefully that's self-evident from the title...

The League's aim is to encourage our fellow gamers and model-makers to up their game while building terrain for their tabletop, be it for wargames, board games or dioramas. We encourage participants to use this thread to trade ideas, inspiration, encouragement and feedback.
Everyone is a winner in a League competition. Because, in the end, your entry is also your prize.

The first place winner, however, will win another great prize. They will be named a member of the League of Extraordinary Riveters, a group of dedicated artists and modellers who put great effort into having their work be extremely detailed (like being willing to glue on thousands of rivets).
The first place winner will also pick the theme for the next round, and become judge for that round. The winner of each round hosts the next round, and the cycle continues.
Each round has a “theme” or other defining attribute(s) that must in some way be applied to your terrain project, to compete with other modellers.
The competition is open to everyone registered on Dakka Dakka, all are welcome to enter regardless of skill, experience, ability, age or any other attribute someone might use to divide hobbyists up
The theme, limitations, rules, judging and prizes are all the responsibility of the host, although he or she can get help from others for some of those things...
For those who are returning once again to compete a most sincere and heartfelt welcome back! And to anyone competing for the first time, awesome! And welcome!
If you haven't taken part before, check out the previous rounds below. These are full of interesting, intriguing, entertaining and just downright awesome builds and ideas, a great source of inspiration. The judge for each round was , as should be clear from above, the winner of the previous round, with the exception of the first, set by one of the League's founders dsteinglass.

Contest # Round 27 "Sweet like chocolate" (monkeytroll)
Contest # Round 28 "Name of the game" (Maniac_nmt)

Theme: Food for thought!
The challenge for contest #29 is to find something you can use to make a piece of terrain/scatter terrain that is based around food. This could be something made from a food product, or a setting for food like a dinner hall, or bundles of food. The "food" part must be obviously visible, but does not have to look like or represent its original form.
Please post your key starting material and WIP pictures to this thread. WIP is the spice of life for a modeller, and your work will help inspire others, spawn discussions, or teach new techniques. Additionally I enjoy seeing them.

All scales and all game systems are welcome. The size of your piece doesn't matter and big vs small will be judged equally. The League wants you to push yourself to the next level in artistic ability and creativity, not size.

One very important thing to do, is post lots of "work in progress" pictures on this thread. This will let everyone enjoy the process of what you are creating. The members of LoER, participants in these contests, and the Dakka community as a whole love to help each other and give advice. A huge part of these competitions are to help you improve as an artist. Let people enjoy your WIPs and give suggestions to make it even more amazing. Constant updates from all of us will also keep this contest easier to find, which will allow more people to come and enjoy everyone's work, and get more people excited about joining in. (If more people join, you'll be even more proud if you win against 20 competitors rather than 2).

Do not post your finished work on this thread They should be PMed to me for judging, but you can still feel free post your finished work on your own P&M blog if you have one (just not here).

Try to take good pictures, if no one can see how good your piece is, how will we know? After all the work you put into your piece, don't slack on the pictures. Use this as a good excuse to improve your picture taking - if in doubt, ask for help, there's guides and articles here on dakka, in the wider wargaming community, and people here are generally willing to give advice - if we help others take better pictures, we can better see what they're producing in their work Lighting, focus, and cropping - 3 things to think on.

Guidelnes:

1. Talk about the competition. Make as many people know as you can. If you have a P&M blog, it's great to mention it there. I think it's a good idea to post you WIPs in your P&M blog as well as here, it gets your post count up faster, and will encourage the visitors of your blog to check out this competition. The more the merrier, and the flow of ideas, critiques and general banter increases exponentially as the number of entrants increases.

One of the best things you can do, is put the League terrain competition banner in your signature:
HTML code for the banner:
{url=https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/775200.page]{img]http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/11/8/429237_md-.jpg{/img]{/url]
change all the "{" to "["
It should look and work like this one:

2. Deadline for the contest will be July 30th 2019 at 23:59pm GMT.

3. Scratch-builds, heavy conversions and their like are the order of the day

4. Your model should be a piece of terrain, or a diorama that includes a piece of terrain, suitable for gaming. It should not be a playable model in itself (a crashed tank must stay crashed), but removable models (people) are fine.

5. Any scale, any setting, any game system or board game is welcome. Likewise, it could be for a non-existent game, just so long as rule 4 is accounted for. Also any size for the actual piece you're making is great as long as you can photograph it clearly.

6. Final Entry: Six or more photos of your final entry, showing top, front, both sides, back and all the important parts - not to be posted in this thread. PM me with links to your galleries, albums, P&M blogs, or just the straight up pictures, etc. As said above, please take the time to take the best photos that you can. I would also like to know what part(s) are used for the theme - where and what is the packaging? A sentence or two on what your piece represents should be included.

7. AMBITION: Push yourself. Try something new! Always wanted to use LEDs? Go for it! Fancied weathering powders? Here's your chance! I'll be looking at your galleries for previous work, entries etc. I want everyone to feel that their best has a fair shot at this. The spirit of these competitions has always been about learning, expanding, discovering.

8. Not so much a rule, but it wouldn't be the League of Extraordinary Riveters if there are no rivets. This also means similar small details are highly valued (rivets are the best example of this level of detailing).

9. THE RULE OF COOL trumps all.

Overview I will be judging based on how well I feel the entry captured the spirit of the contest this time around. No special points or fixed criteria for victory.

The Prize
Membership to the League of Extraordinary Riveters as top prize. You will be allowed to fly the League's banner and be recognized as a modeler devoted to impressive detail (or Rivets).
The warm fuzzy feelings inside and the bragging rights that your peers love and are impressed with your work. And as is league tradition, I will also mail you a small modelling/war game based prize as well. This will include various bits that you will hopefully find usefully in your modeling future.

Additionally, the winner of the popular vote, if different form the winner I select, will receive a similar goody bag.

I haven't had the energy to start yet, but I have come up with an idea I'd like to pursue. I can't resist going with a pun for this contest. With the contest called "Food for Thought" what popped into my head was Illithid Mind Flayers from Dungeons and dragons, They are monsters that feed on the brains of humanoids. So I'm planning to make a diorama of a Mind Flayer running a market stall selling brains to eat Hence "Food for Thought/ Thought for food" I hope it's not too corny

All are welcome.

And KT yes that would be fine, it has a food reference. Would be nice and in keeping if the part is recognisable as food related.

Oh, man... this is the one I've been waiting for. I haven't done one yet, but I am totally in if y'all will have me. My second (and last, whew!) child stopped nursing a few months ago, and I have all the breast milk pumping gear, storage bottles, and assorted fiddly bits. I was the dishwasher-in-chief for all those months, and all I could think about up to my elbows in a hot soapy sink was what good terrain it would make someday. It's on!

Right, here we go - for the last few years I always get a Cadbury's Creme Egg (diabetes in tinfoil, if you're not from the UK and not familiar) and every year I look at the plastic and think "that could be... something before it eventually goes in the recycling.

So this year, it's going to be something.

So I'm going simple and ( fairly) small, building a launcher for ultimate dreadball:

MVP for scale. I'm using a smartie tube - although I'll need another one, for its lid, to get the \_/ detail symmetrical - and the footprint cannot be bigger than a gameboard hex. And, obviously, chaos bits, repurposed into a multi-ball launcher and cameras, as the central pillar also acts as the ref in Ultimate. Yes, that means I'm using kit bits for a LoeR contest, but I'm repurposing them, and in the end, I just like the idea.
My main concern is stability and weight. In retrospect, I should maybe have put a couple of coins or washers inside the tube to keep it steady. I may still attach it to a Dreadball base to give it a bit more heft, we'll see how steady it is once built.

Cheers. Not that I/we don't love great big grand builds, but sometimes it's nice to work on something more... focused I guess?
Maybe not in the top, but along the upper rim, I could, as that's got to get covered over on one side with another lid's edge. Good shout

Hmmm...should I commit to making something this round? I've been so busy, but I feel I need a deadline to focus my hobby energy.

Neither of my two current terrain build ideas (Modular swamp board for Relicblade, and a spaceport facility demo/display board for Maelsrom's Edge) fit the theme at all though, and I hate to derail them to force this one (just off the top of my head, an Underhive food truck/vendor serving 'food' from a questionable/unconventional origin).

One last idea that might be a stretch...3 funnel-web terrain markers and 3 matching deathmark spiders...the food in this instance being the heroes that may wander too close to them in-game (also for Relicblade).

Any advice from the peanut gallery you fine fellows?

But I do love the spider idea, nice twist on a theme.

Looking good so far. I hope that keg was emptied before starting the project.

Here's some WIP crossposted from my P&M blog

I don't normally post WIP photos, but I guess doing so is SOP for LoER competitions. Here's the fire pit all built:

I put down a layer of sand/gravel on the base, built a ring out of slightly larger gravel, filled that in with slightly smaller gravel, and then added some wood I cut from scrap balsa. I soaked the whole thing in watered-down PVA to keep it all together.

Then I painted it. It came out a lot better than I thought it would. Next, I have to chop up the giraffe and get it ready for the spit.

(crossposted from my P&M blog)

Thanks for all the kind words, every one. They really fan the flames of creativity.

I've had to slow down a lot in the last month or so. My wife (quite correctly) as pointed out that I have too much hobby stuff, and need to thin out the Closet of Shame. I don't really have time day to day for that sort of thing, so it will have to wait until summer break. Until then, I'm trying to keep a lower hobby profile in order to maintain domestic tranquility. I added the posts to the fire pit, chopped up the giraffe and added the spit. I can see the finish line from here-- about three more painting sessions should do it.

Well if you insist...

I'm currently thinking advertising signage along the empty four sides. Turns out it's really hard to find good vertical sci-fi food ads on t'internet On a separate note, we used it in a test game on Monday there and it was pretty stable (only knocked over by general carelessness) and sturdy, as well as being visually useful for play purposes (stops anything moving through its hex, apart from anything else. So that's encouraging.

WIP update: I decided I wasn't going to use the caps to the bottles for any part of the project, so I mounted them on a wooden stake and made a sort of jig to facilitate painting. So far, so good-- I got the rusty red-brown primer down with no fingerprints. Next I'll mess around with Ryza Rust and maybe some other colors for added depth before the somewhat intimidating next step.

More pics on my P&M blog here: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/210/686009.page#10462980

In acknowledging Rule #7 (ambition), I'm going to try my hand at salt weathering on these tanks. I've watched videos demoing a few different techniques... with/without hairspray, with/without a clear coat between the rust and the color, etc. Does anyone here have a preferred technique or recommended tutorial? Also, I need to pick a color. I'm leaning toward yellow; I've seen it done well, and the high contrast really makes the rust stand out. Alternatives are Administratum blue-gray or Mechanicus red, both of which would be both more subdued and more forgiving than yellow. Thoughts?

Looking great, I have found the layer of protection over your base layer is a very good idea. And go for the yellow, or maybe a Military green, it will bring home the effect better.

I am sure you can pull this off, no worries. And it is a great technique to have.

Snazzy Illithid!

Started adding various bits of scrap plastic to the DBU launcher:

More stable now. Nearly there.

Turns out this means I've also started thinking about other Pitch Upgrades, so I've been playing with ideas for Subs Benches:

Just to sit at the side of the pitch. You really need 4 slots - subs, and 1/2/3 turns of Injury.
Clockwise from the Top, they would be:
1) Painted into quarters
2) Barrier to indicate Sub/Injury side
3) Other/different floor material
Fairly large, but standard based, Dreadball figure for scale purposes.

As previously mentioned, Smarties lids are identical in size to DB bases, so could maybe do something with that.

Thoughts?

Ok. I'm going to officially toss my hat into the ring here. I've got an ambitious terrain project idea for a modular ruined swamp tower.

My tenuous link to the theme is the base of my tower is going to resemble an 8" round layer cake...but with swamp mud, gnarly trees, and rubble strewn about.

I've already done some concept sketches and purchased some materials....I'll start posting to my project blog in the next few days and comment here when they are up.

Swamp layer cake? That sounds...interesting.

Here's where I am on the camp fire:

I painted the carcass in browns-- that's what most of the GIS results for "roast whole cow" looked like. I added some OSL to the bottom of the carcass (you can barely see it in this photo), as well as some on the rocks (slightly more visible). The whole thing feels almost finished, but I'm not wholly certain what it's missing. Ideas?

@inmygravenimage: Thanks graven, the tower is looking better and better. I like the addition of the textured strips on the side, it really break up the smooth surface and adds to it.

@Fango: Glad to hear you'll be joining us.

@JoshInJapan: Wow, Josh, I'm not used to a piece of plastic making me hungry. You did a really great job making that giraffe look like a golden brown cooked piece of meat. Nice job on the OSL too, I've never been able to do that.

The back of the announcers' booth also has the dreadball logo on it, so this version uses that too.

Cam & Graven: Thanks for the insights on salt weathering. I took your advice and added a clear coat today. Once I find the paint I want, it'll be go time... couldn't find a color I liked in a matte finish. I think yellow still leads the pack. Krylon makes little mini craft-sized rattle cans of matte spray in a lot of bold colors, I just need to find a local source.

The Dreadball pylon is looking good; nice finds in the bits box for that extra texture!

Josh, excellent paint on that fire pit... you nailed the high-temperature glow of the coals.

I'm very interested in Fango's design... sounds like a good fit for my home table, so I can't wait to see the techniques chosen.

As for mine, I got some paint down on the main pieces, and I'll probably start fabricating and painting the trim tomorrow. I'll snap a photo when the riveting starts.

Also, I've been checking out some of your P&M threads... really spectacular stuff, both in terms of vision and craftsmanship. Thanks for the inspiration and insights, everyone!

All the basic pieces have paint on them now, so the look is starting to come together. On the upper platform is window screen, sprayed silver and cut to fit. It will be held in place by the riveted trim, which I've also basecoated in Leadbelcher. Next steps: the ramp (I got some diamond plate styrene!), the magnets between sections, and the trim. I'll try to add a few more photos to my P&M blog later tonight.

Indeed! And further progress on the tower.

To make the angles solid I'm using Deadzone corner struts, such as the one in front. It amuses me enormously that I'm using nicely detailed bits on the interior in a way that will never be seen (though it's perfectly possible that some will also appear in the exterior detailing process).

Reduced the height, and did a test toss. Worked well... so well, that only 2 of the 5 dice thrown stayed in the tray

And just checking Elmer and Dodds for size. They'll remain removable, so it works as a piece of 40k/Gaslands terrain also.

In order to raise my own game somewhat, I'm going to try to do something a bit extra with the launcher: I have raided the wife's old cake supplies (Food for Thought indeed ) and found a balloon light LED plus casing, and also scavenged 3 tiny tiny tiny lr41 batteries from a broken robopet. Had to clean the old leaked batteries out, but seems to be working ok.

Oh man, what an awesome round of updates!

Fango, your sketches are impresive! I've watched your foam building in your P&M thread, and this looks like an awesome build. The organic shapes are super cool and I love the inside-out design.

Skinflint, nice detail work with the little bits... looks super tedious. I've been pushing straight pins through plasticard, so I think I can relate.

Graven, excellent work with the electrics. I've shopped online for this kind of stuff, but never tried it. Super cool finished look and a great fit for the context.

Here's what I've got for the weekend: rivets! I got just the two sides of the upper deck done and haven't painted it yet, but I at least worked out the technique. I also discovered that I had way under-estimated on materials, so there's more angle stock on the way and the cost of the undertaking has gone up again. Hopefully I can pick up the pace on output. What do y'all think of adding a green stuff "weld" to the corner? More progress pics in the P&M blog here: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/210/686009.page#10473072

@Graven excellent work, all looking great and well done on the lighting.

@ MacPhail, excellent bud, that really looks fantastic. As an idea for the corner "welding", have you ever seen this.

But to be honest if it was me, I would use a soldering iron or some form of heat. Even a paperclip heated over candle would work, and be quite gentle.

That's awesome, easy but not obvious. I think I might try freehand with green stuff, since there's not much to do. I think a lot of the illusion can be done with paint to show heat distress, but that's going to take some experimentation.

Well, I think the different components are now done, and primed as well:

Some zenithal priming on the building also. Not something I often do. I added a couple of extra jeejaws to it, the lightsaber handles as funnel-pipe things, just for a bit of extra variation. Chopped up some mantic barriers and recombined them to add rails. I've also made a couple of sin bins/injury benches for Dreadball, as I was on a roll (sadly not a buttered roll, as that would be more edible). They're not really part of the contest entry per se just part of the "set" of upgrading my Dreadball stuff to make it more kid-friendly (they find the lack of injury benches printed on the Ultimate mat really confusing). So now that painting proper can commence, these are my final WIP pics. See you at the other end of the contest gang!

Good progress everyone.

Welds:
Putty will do fine.

I'm impressed with the strength of the friction weld though.

Something else that can be used for this is a 3D printing pen. Can be as smooth or rough as you like, and as it's also melting plastic it'll be almost as strong as that friction weld. The tip of the thing is hot enough to melt polystyrene just enough to weld without adding the filament.

Have you moved the end date out, or is it still July 19? I know I said I would skip, but while working on my Greeks, I came across this from Sarissa precision. I think I could knock something similar up in balsa.

It wouldn't be much of a distraction, and I'd add some water channels to it from a central well/fountain.

Got the basing done and the wood painted. Now to paint up the well. I think I'm going to try some hot glue to make the water spouting out into the channels, and mod podge for the water.

Then I found this at the craft store, the balls are pretty tiny and I think I will try and make some grapes with it to hang off the vine.

Final update pics for my entry. The faux foliage paints up pretty good after a layer of glue is brushed on. Then an exacto knife later and there are little bunches of grapes (i.e. 'rivets') for the trellis.

I've put a few on to see how it looks, and I'm pleased with the results so far.

I have a ways to go to get the trellis fully covered, and then add the water, but it should be pretty straight forward.

Holy Carp, Summer got busy for me! No surprise there I guess...my wife has been putting on the pressure for me to get some of these home improvement projects completed, and so much of my hobby time has gone that direction.

I have made very little progress, so the deadline push actually means I'm not completely out of the realm of possibly squeaking in with at least a partially completed submission...I am notorious for

1. Biting off way more than I can chew.
2. Having absolutely no sense of how much time it will realistically take me to complete anything. (Experts say people with ADHD are temporally challenged)
3. Ultimately not finishing things and drowning in unfinished projects (Take a look at the first post in my PLog for a glimpse at the horror show I've created for myself)

SO. Lets be realistic here...my new goal is to complete just ONE corner of my crazy layered cake tower for this contest (personal bonus points for TWO)....then you guys can root for me to complete the other sections in my project log after it's over.

Great work all around everyone! I particularly love the hanging grape vines...as I live in Wine Country in California and my wife works at a winery!

I'll post some actual progress this weekend, I promise!

Okay, now I'm panicking... when is the adjusted deadline? I thought I had a while yet, but when you say "racing to finish" it freaks me out a little. What's the final due date?

Whew, that's a nice relief! Still, I better hustle. Here's a final WIP before I head for the finish line: pre-assembly of base plates (magnetized at the corners for versatility) and upper deck complete, trimmed in styrene, straight pin "rivets" and green stuff "welds" prepped with Leadbelcher. Tanks and other trim are being painted separately, so it's time to start weathering and assembling everything. I'm hoping it moves quickly from here now that the fiddly work of trim details and magnets is done. Wish me luck, and check out more details in my P&M blog if you like: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/240/686009.page#10513309

I'm going to make it-- barely, and without some of the flourishes I'd hoped for, but solid enough (I hope). The deadline is Tuesday the 30th before midnight, right?

I finished my piece almost a month ago, thanks to my inability to remember dates.

Yikes! I just realized that midnight GMT is 6pm here... I haven't even taken photos yet! Time to hustle...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Okay, I'm all submitted (link in PMs) and I think I beat the GMT deadline by a couple of hours. Whew! I had an awesome time, learned some stuff, messed some stuff up, and I've got a cool new terrain piece (that will get a proper in-game debut tomorrow). I've learned from watching you all work too. Thanks to everyone-- especially Cam for organizing-- and good luck!

Excellent work, everyone! Such cool finished products... I'd play a game on any of those tables.

Any thought we should point out the food in each? A couple are obviously made to BE food, but others are made FROM food... just a thought.

Great work all, and again, many thanks to Cam!

The food connection in our case was the Easter egg packaging the whole thing is built from- been meaning to do something with that for ages! Nice to finally have the excuse :-)

The results are in and a winner chosen!

It is always very hard going through the entries, and as usual the quality of work on display here is so very high. Every piece could be sold as professional work and would look fantastic on anyone's table. I will shortly put up a critique post, not that I have anything negative to say about anyone's work here, it is all amazing and close to flawless.

Well the winner......in the end this came down to how much I have seen this persons work improve, always looking to go a bit further and always taking our critique to heart and using it. Apart from every time we mention "smaller"!!!!!

KernelTerror

This piece has depth and scale beyond the physical size. With the OSL in the windows he gives a glimpse of the wonders happening inside. It embodies perfectly the Chaos spirit we have seen in all his builds, but with those subtle improvements we have advised, he has taken his work to the next level a bit at a time. I believe it is time he got his badge as a member of the League of Extraordinary Riveters.

This is also a great piece for game play, easily an objective as a strategic point, height for troops to gain advantage, size to give large units cover and line of sight blocking. My imagination runs riot when I see pieces like this, so many scenarios that could revolve around just it. I would love to see a shot of his table, all his pieces together.

And also Kudos and glory to MacPhail, you won the vote on the popularity contest. Well done sir.

Honestly all your work was truly amazing folks. And all easily as good as each other, so much brilliance and so much creativity. Please come back and dazzle us some more.

Well as I say I will go over my notes carefully and produce a critique, and I would ask anyone else to do likewise. By all means, I don't think anyone would object to it, but if you do please speak up.

So another one over for me, seriously thinking of retiring. That's 6 of these I have run, takes a toll. However, it is now over to you KernelTerror to run the next competition and give us all something to think about.

Wow really ? I mean TZEENTCH Be praised, ahahahaha !

Seriously though, thanks a lot Cam, I did try to to learn from these past four times I entered, from other entries, and from quality reviews. Your approval truly means a lot. Now I have to find a topic cool enough to prevent you from retiring do I ? Kidding, take the deserved time off and come back stronger.

Congrat on the public vote result McPhail, that is a well deserved win, that choice of material was probably one of the best I ever saw ^^ ! But really, all entries were tremendously fun to follow, and turned out beautifully !

I'll consult the history and come up with an hopefully motivating topic for the next round. I promise it will not be "Anything at least 2 square meters and over 10 kilos". Probably.

And,

Actually so would I, and that is the perfect excuse to do so, hopefully the camera's flash does'nt reveal any flaw that will make you regret your call. Here is the chaos city from the "Hold The Line", "Sweet like Chocolate", "The Name of the Game" and "Food for Thought" editions :

More here.

Thanks again folks, round 30 should start in a few days !

Congratulations KernelTerror! Great work! And thanks for the group shot, I love how well all your pieces work together, my entries are all over the place in theme. But in four contests you've built what could work as a beautiful table all on it's own.

Cheers to Kernal on the win... the scale is impressive and the light effects in those tower windows is really three-dimensional, plus the whole table hangs together nicely around it. Tip of the hat to Josh too for the tight finish in the popular vote! Every single thing here impressed me in more ways than one... nice job everyone. I'll be watching for the next one to kick off!
