Welcome all to the 66th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favourite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.
This month, the theme is Mastermind: Intellect is a deadly weapon, whether put to work forging a masterful strategy, developing peerless technology or bent towards the study of supernatural and magical forces. Your entry should feature models famed for their mental prowess.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to five models as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of August and will end at midnight UK time on the 31st of August. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

still no sign of baby, so I'm going to put up magnus, and erebus. and we'll just see which one if any gets finished.
Forgot to photo Erebus head before I'd got a base layer and a wash for his tattoos, all done today. Hope that's still alright

This is going to be a tough one unless I get another miniature to fit the theme better.
Right now, following my theme of Eldar Phoenix Lords either Feugan or Bahrroth was next up...or both...or with a Farseer. Three heads are better than one.
Cheers,
CB
PS: Added Farseer build.

Uh, Nev, unless more members of the forum have access to time machines than I'd anticipated you might want to revise the dates for the challenge
After rooting through my box of stuff I've found an old metal skink shaman. Not the skink I was hoping to paint this month, but close. I'll post a pic later once I finish prepping.

Time travel is the sign of a sophisticated mastermind. Anything else is just the base scheming of savages.
Fun Fact: While I’m not sure what hour Para posts these in his part of the world (I assume GMT) but here in New York, they pop up first thing in the morning, while I’ve having breakfast and my first cup of coffee. Which is my I tend to be the first entrant, as I’m surfing Dakka at that time. It also means that due to my undercaffinated state, I can’t be held responsible for any of my actions. It’s like Dr. Heckle and Mr. Hyde, but the monster is just a lethargic mess staggering around mashing buttons while waiting for the elixer to kick in.
I left the end time as midnight GMT. If Para want to come in and close it then, he can. It’s still his show and I’m just doing the busywork for him. But as timezone math makes my brain hurt, I’ll probably close it down Tuesday morning Eastern time, which should give everyone a few more hours. Extensions are of course, still an option, and as that’s a work day, there is no chance the vote is going up until later that afternoon anyway.

Haven't entered the comp for a few years but since I was back painting 40K stuff any way I thought I might throw my ring into the hat. I have to admit that I have already done some repairs to the back of this "fine"cast monstrosity, it was given to me by someone who couldn't face the remedial work to get it to usable standard. I hope that is allowed in the spirit of the competition.

If you are talking about repairs to the mini, that’s fine. This is a painting comp. Any build/green stuff/sculpting/repair can happen before the month starts. As long as you’ve not put more than a basecoat of paint on his back, you are all set.

Updated Proof- I have kitbashed him together. (in the spoiler)
Built a jump-pack out of two LR lights, two missile "enginges" and an exhaust part from an unknown origin.
The body is a bash of a former assault marine, and various SW bits. I made the crozius arcanum out of a thunder hammer, and a IG skull wing thing that looked appropriate. Looking forward to painting him.

I'm trying to make an on-foot version of the jetbike-riding inquisitor I made last year. Of course, I optimized the character to be easy to model riding a jetbike. I've never attempted a kitbash this ambitious before. We'll see how it goes.
Inquisitor Parris examines the dismembered remains of... himself!

My entry, should I actually finish it this month, will be this Sister of the Order Dialogus:
I figure she's gotta be fairly knowledgeable since a Dialogus has to read a lot (even some things that are normally forbidden to others in the Imperium). The new model is such an improvement over the old goggle-eyed one (who looked like Velma from Scooby-Doo!), it'll be a joy to paint. With all the other things on my plate currently we'll see if I find time to finish...

Disappointed, but I don't think I'm going to have time to enter this month. I was going to do Eldrad, or potentially some farseers/warlocks, but I'm losing the first third of the month to family commitments, then house-sitting for the second third. I don't think a third of a month will be enough to come up with something I'd be happy enough to submit, so, yeah, that's probably me out. :/
I guess Eldrad is mainly black paint, so perhaps he wouldn't be too complicated. I'll see when I have some free time. Otherwise, good luck to everyone! Can't wait to see what you all come up with.

Great looking work from everyone so far. I especially like the darker look Fuegan by CB.
Here is Mr Grimm so far;
Still lots to do, and I'm not sure that I am going to be able to pull off the effect I'm going for. The details aren't deep enough for me to be able to create realistic shadows to offset the brighter highlights on the other side, but I'll keep going and hope I can pull it off.

@Captain Brown: A nice moody rendition of Fuegan there.
@ Mothsniper: That's a cool red squiggly thingy. Plastic effect parts are common in gunpla kits, but aside from the necron's glowy rods I've rarely seen them used in miniatures.

WIP of my entry.
(actually a little further along, but Slug Boy is still asleep in the workroom, so I can’t grab a new pic)
It’s been a bit hot where I am as well. Unfortunately, my workspace is the most poorly ventilated room in my apartment. One small window, no AC. They way my place is set up it’s impossible to get a cross draft. Best I can do is open the small window, and turn the fan/ AC units on in the other rooms and hope for the positive pressure to keep the air moving. But that means I’m either air conditioning the great outdoors, or just running fans. It does tend to keep me from long sessions painting.
OP should be updated to this point.

Behind every good villain sits a great enforcer. For Necrons, this can be more true than most, with that enforcer being the real power behind an increasingly addled and eccentric throne...
P.S. Hope it's OK to enter this month - turns out my camera ate the proof picture I took earlier in the month.

Sgt.Sunshine, nice looking colour scheme!
JoshInJapan, great models and I like that lantern!
Captain Brown, your speed and efficiency to get some great models painted is awesome!
ZenBadger, Creed is looking great!
QAR, great work on the apostle, really like how you've gone down the NMM route.
SmallChanges, really like that dark metal and regal purple combo

Running out of month people! Time to get those brushes moving. Finished with the Seer, Librarian still needs a bit of work. (and other background non-competition projects need to get done by the end of the month) OP should be updated to this point.

Making steady progress here but going to need to get a rush on to have time for everything i have planned. Face nearly done and red nearly done, everything else needs highlights and i still need to base the captains sword.
As always feedback is very much welcome and appreciated.

Having similar issues; I got Ahriman about 60% done in the first two days. It’s taken the rest of the month to get him to about 80% and looks like I’ll be scraping under the wire at the weekend (again!) @Freya: That's hell of a sculpting work, especially for something that's "out of your comfort zone"
@Maxwin: The face is looking really great!
@Tyranid Horde: Glad to see you take part once again mate! Looking good so far.
@qar: The freehand is top notch! And the NMM fits the model perfectly.
A bit late to the party, but I'll hop in at the last minute.
Started working on these about a week ago, but did not get around posting the proof pic as I've been quite busy.
Plus I was not sure if I could make it, so did not want to take part with unfinished models.
Here's the proof pic.
Gang leaders for my Helot Cultist gang and for my girlfriend's Escher gang.
Masterminds in their own right, using their limited resources and deceptive tactics to steal the territories from one another.
Here's a WIP pic from last weekend. It's really really poor quick shot, but that'll have to do for now.
I will realistically be able to finish the Escher leader, but hopefully get some paint on the Chaos leader as well.

Awesome work, everybody!
Here's my proof pic - Mollog, the "mastermind" behind Mollog's Mob, a group of cave squigs and barely-sentient mushrooms. I like the idea of the mastermind actually being a rather dumb troll. But compared to the mushrooms, he's super-smart.
I took that about a week ago, and have started painting him inbetween wrangling my bored kid, outbreaks of frenetic housework, bouts of existential dread, and periods of blankly playing World of Warcraft. Here's a very blurry WIP pic of where I am so far.
The skin is getting there, although it looks pretty crappy in that pic, annoyingly. The pink and blue mushrooms are finished. Everything else is barely started. Loads still to do.

I had a "blank" female head that was 3d printed. I added the neck cowl and hair on the head then the pony tails are from the original models head so I just glued them on my sculpted one. I'm not hardly so good as that.
EDIT:
Might change the photos to ones taken with a real camera and not my phone for once if I can get the card reader to work with my computer. We'll see. If not then these first ones will be the thing

Speed paint a grot. Keep whatever forward momentum you can muster. But it would be great if you could get something done. We have faith!

Heh, that’s been my M.O. since the start of this. Kicking out table-top quality entries, but every month. I think my best entry might have broken into the top 3rd of the pack, and still well shy of the podium.
Speaking of entries, finished with mine.
There is a shadow in the warp coming, and the seers from my armies can sense it. The need to band together, or my new quarentine tyranid army is going to devour them and claim their shelf space.
I’m not unhappy with the way they turned out, but they don’t really excite me. But they get to move from the primed pile to the YTD shelf, so that’s a victory against the Pile of Shame.

Just started painting a couple of days ago. I've scaled myself all the way back from Eldrad to a couple of warlocks (now probably just a single warlock). But hey, I might at least have something to submit.

I think we all have hobby (and life) up and down times. If it's all starting to feel like a chore, maybe just do something that makes you happy, even if it's completely not part of the plan. I find I get much more out of converting models than painting them (seriously, my pile of converted figures waiting to see a little colour is getting silly, even without buying more stuff in a while), but occasionally I make a model I'm so happy with that I can ride that energy through a couple of evenings of painting, and put it away pretty close to how I'd imagined. That said, even when I do get motivation for painting, it doesn't always last, and the scheme doesn't always go as intended. Recently mucked up a new Deathwatch venerable dreadnought with some really bad Abaddon black (too thin to cover, yet somehow drying in ridges) which threw me out for a while, until I decided to park it and do something else. I suppose what I'm saying is much like Nevelon says - do what you want to do, at your pace, and don't beat yourself up about it.

A very late proof photo, taken tonight... I mean this morning. If I can pull this off-- no promises-- it will be pretty much a one-sitting paint job, as I also need to launch the next round of the LoER Terrain Contest this weekend. If anyone can do it, the Inquisition can.

Stunning work popping up, great work guys!
Finished mine. As suspected, I was able to finish only one of the leaders. The chaos leader is still badly WIP.
So, here's the Escher leader:
It was fun painting something a bit brighter and colorful than rusty ork vehicles or rugged kriegers, which feel more familiar to me.
Goals for this model were to practice painting the skin and highlighting black.
Had to rush a few things and the cloak is a bit messy here and there, but all in all I'm actually quite happy with it.
Especially the skin: even though it could be a lot better, painting it was really out of my comfort zone. After this, I feel a bit more confident about painting faces and bare skin, so a milestone achieved there!
Edit: Updated the pictures

Here's my entry, then. Considering I banged it out in only a few days, I'm pretty happy with it. At least I've got something to enter this month. It's the first time I've used this technique for the sword - could have been a lot neater (especially on the reverse), but considering I was almost speed painting, it's not too bad.
Proof pic first (obviously). Only managed to get the warlock on the left done.

Woosh. Slipping this in right under the wire again. Combination of losing the first half of the month to the tail end of the MBA (but I'm done, finally!) and then the stress of job-hunting and my father's health issues has sort of undermined my motivation to paint this month.
I tried something a little more ambitious with this piece in terms of dramatic lighting. Didn't quite pull it off, but it was a good learning experience and fun to experiment with. I'm also getting better at this photography thing!

Some incredible work across the board here. It amazes me how the field gets stronger and stronger every month, everyone's bringing their A game these last few rounds and it shows.
Despite the odds, I've technically managed to throw together and entry this month, but I shall have to request the pics amnesty for a bit, hoping to get them done tomorrow morning. It's definitely not a good entry, but until yesterday I didn't think I was going to be in at all, between my eyes still on the blink (pun very much intended) and the 3d printer failing to complete the model I was going to throw in (first world problem, I know )... At the very least, the streak goes on.

Turns out I did get the pics done tonight, so here's one messy wizard. Caleb Widogast from Critical Role's second campaign. I remember being somewhat disappointed by the CR minis from Steamforged and on the whole I stand by that, but to be fair Caleb was among the better ones in the set and as a wizard with maxed out Intelligence and the Keen Mind feat giving him a perfect memory, he fits the theme nicely. Nothing fancy about the paintjob, as right now just keeping it within the lines is a win for me (I was wearing pinhole glasses to focus while painting, not something I'd recommend but at the mo, sadly necessary.) Still, and entry is an entry, and honestly it's better than I thought it would be.

Lots of nice last minute stuff guys!
Remember, one perk of me running this is that I’m in the Eastern time zone. At the time of me writing this, you still have a couple hours to go. And honestly, I’m too old to stay up till midnight just to close it, so you have until breakfast tomorrow.
If anyone needs a little more time than that, just chime in. But barring that, I’ll put up September’s in the morning, close this one, and then start compiling the vote.
But still time to squeak in under the wire.

Just be sure you post like you did letting me know they were updated. I do occasionally update the OP with new entries/finished pics, so if I already did that, and you sneak in new pics, I might not notice.
Generally the best way to get pics is to upload them to somewhere (preferably Dakka) and post them. That way I can just quote your post, copy the links, and post them in the OP/vote thread. If you just attach them to the post I need to go through a couple extra steps.
And I think we are going to call this one closed. Please join us for next month, The Long War.
