Dakka Painting Challenge Round 105 November 2023:Wrecking Ball @ 2023/11/01 10:39:01

Post by: Nevelon

Welcome all to the 105th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month is Wrecking Ball -- Sometimes what you need is not subtle. Your entry should be an unstoppable instrument of blunt trauma. Or at least most of those things. A barbarian with a great axe is not blunt, but still a force unstoppable destruction. It doesn’t need to be a melee force of destruction. Demolisher cannons, siege engines, anything that reduces a person/place/thing to its component parts in a very unsubtle way is good to go.

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of November and will end at midnight EST on November 30th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

I'm going to paint the strongest Avenger. Thor is mighty and his hammer is pretty much the definition of blunt force trauma.

Spoiler:

Oh come on!.. th..there's such a thing?!
YES.. you are reading it right!.. or actually you are about to read it right!.. hmm!!
There apparently exists such a thing as an Orkyverse!..

What is an Orky ..verse.. you ask despite having watched way too many superhero movies..

Ha!.. its a verse in which Orky things multiply into absurd expressions..

Hey.. calm down.. we've already survived a darned time travel episode! This is way less of an enigma..

So.. having had to suffer a much upgraded Gruk Nubgruk (writer: the main character of the Nite-Ork genotype) becoming a time travel veteran Cybork... he met up with an old friend who had his own story.. They reconnected the dots to Nubgruk's past talking all night.. and then.. well..
Read on! Or you will suffer not having read one of the most amazing stories ever concieved!

So to those who haven't read the most recent addition to the Un(dead)Orky (Hold up.. I thought they were called Nite Ork??!, yeah.. not anymore!) story here's a super quick and short recap; The Un(dead)Orkies were stuck at a war-stripped concrete multi leveled appartment complex being assaulted by hungry tyranid scavengers, somehow the "hero" and protagonist of the bunch had fallen to his double death and woken up in another time reincarnated as another Ork, making his way back to the moment of his demise through corny time travel adventures..
His old friend "Oothed" the most smartest Ork in history (which makes him the dumbest of any other race were he any other race.. regardless..) otherwise having been the new leader of the UnOrky's otherwise (or in this case, as Nubgruk had come back to this verse; Nite Orks) but cheaped out of it by NubGruk's return. Holy flip are Orky things complicated!

You still following this warblgarbl of a tale?
Good, because now it actually becomes more warblgarbly!

-

Oothed, thankful that somehow Gruk Nubgruk had come back after the unbearably long time of one hour and twenty minutes now wondered wether his achievement of "thought" thinking up his own aspirations had Nubgruk stayed dead was now in vain.
He had no intentions of rebelling against a friend who was also now a CybOrk, which wasn't going to give him much of a chance in combat..
No.. Oothed wanted to try his own hand at timetravel..
"Me erd dat legens"
He had stated with a friendly tone, somewhat conveying that Nubgruks adventure had been understood and inspired him.
Then.. Oothed took his sawblade.. rested it on his skull and turned it on.
"saw lat on dat otha side"

-

Such a sad.. almost halloweeny story!.. are we reading an Orky suicide here.. well.. considering Orks always reincarnate into another Ork let's not became too melodramatic and accept that whenever Orks are unhappy in their current body they can just grow a new one. Wether their mind survives is another story, that has to first go through a new adventure and gain personality.. almost like real life reincarnation except for the mushroom biome and mutant strength I suppose.

-

Something dripped.. its kindof .. painful.. woah woah woah.. is that lava?
Boot-hed quickly came to his feet.. he had been sleeping under what oomies referred to as a lava lamp.. or so he thought it should look like ..after redecorating his cave with buckets of actual lava..

It had burnt through the clay pot "chandelier" attached to a metal bar above his bed..

He brushed his chest with his hands huffing and puffing.. "dats nub gud" 'the lava drips had seared his skin but not enough to give lasting scars..
Outside the cave the sun was just rising emitting a glow as red as the lava..

Boot-hed walked outside.. wondering how long he had lived there.. watching the sun rise every morn over and over.. and wether he should finally leave this place.
In the distance rigs and towers, metallic and shining from the ascending rays.. gave away Oomie pressence. Boot-hed had sneaked around learning from these small and weak creatures, learning their language and their ways..

He had spied on how they built things but also on how they fought, weirdly.. instead of putting in their weight smashing and klomping eachother they gave eachother interrupting jabs, used clubs and rods only on sandbags and some even wore silly gloves trying "not" to klomp eachother.. how strange.
Boot-hed looked up.. the starry skies were still there while the sun slowly faded them out..

From the south appeared some weirdly shaped vessels.. its patterned skin shifting giving Boot-hed a bit of a headache.. they were moving in on the Oomie enclave..

-

About half an hour later he had climbed down the hills and hid behind a big metal door, the enclave was heavily under attack by even flimsier creatures.. jumping around laughing, crying and sometimes even making weird faces... all this fighting made Boot-hed want to go ape.. something inside craved violently smashing things but he had bottled it all up for such a long time.. afraid that if he had taken it out on the Oomies he would only enjoy it for the short term and be alone for the remainder.. watching Oomies fight instead was a bit like how Oomies watched their monitors in turn, showing instructions satisfying the urge.

Something bumped into the door on the other side.. Boot-hed slowly curved his big head around the thing to take a look and emediately retracted..
He had looked right into the guise of one of the assailants.. a face so eerie he rubbed his eyes hoping to undo the suprise..
The creature moved around the door and emediately started to make stabbing motions toward Boot-hed who in turn easily deflected them with his giant strength.. then smashed its head and guise with a double handed slap..

It fell to the ground motionless looking even weirder than before.. its body so thin and floppy.. it could've been a living flail..
Boot-hed looked at his hands.. they were completely covered with blood..
"yug.." He remarked.. looking around for something to clean himself with..
All he could find was a big mechanical saw and a boxing glove..

"dat iz gug.. hmmm" Boot-hed smiled as he put on the boxing glove.. then attached the mechanical saw to one of the metal rods the Oomies had used to punch sandbags with..

More weird creatures with guises came running and jumping having noticed both Boot-hed and their fallen ally.. , Boot-hed was quickly overwhelmed and figured that boxing gloves weren't great at klomping.., then figured that mechanical saws were very great at klomping.

Boot-hed felt smarter after dispatching the slim things.. then wondered wether attaching something more klompy would improve the boxing glove.., then hacked his saw into the metal door to extract some scrap and attached that to the boxing glove.
"daz it"

Boot-hed knew that change had caught up with him, there was no returning to his cave nor learning from all the Oomies now dead.. all that remained was to go into the wild and klomp as many floppy creatures as possible and hopefully one day this would tell him the meaning of life.
To break with his old life he also decided to change his name so he could stay incognito, if anyone would realise he was an Ork then that could make him lose the benefit of the initiative.

Oomie-names resounded in his memories.. ..Boot-hed looked at his augmented boxing glove.. .. and manifested his new persona.. from henceforth his name would be.. "Bill bombclaw".. ~"Orky bill bombclaw" to his friends.

He turned around.. ran up the stairs while Orky music played on his mind.. and was emediately blasted into oblivion by a big Harlequin vessel hovering over the premise.

-

"GAHHH!" Angry-savage fell off his chair.. Bulk Gruoghan .. his brrrotherrr startled.. "wut da hork lat doo?!"
"..Me.. me haz dis dremz.." Savage crawled up onto his hands and knees.. bending and arcing his back squeezing out the hurt.. "Me wuz a boz of a Ork.. klomping thin oomie likez tingz"

"Harharhar" "dat nub dremz!" a mysterious figure from the back of the Ork-pub they were all in shouted loudly in "Orkish whisper"; "DAT IZ DA ORKYVERSE TELLIN LAT DA MYSTEREES"

"wuz da mysterees?" Bulk Gruoghan sighed.. "lat betta nub make savage tink weirdz"
"dat nub da weirdz boyz tink!" the mysterious figure replied.. "datz da morky tink"

"wut da morky tink lat tuup" Gruoghan stood up grabbing a chair ready to whack the mysterious figure in the skull with it..

The mysterious figure stood up aswell, also grabbing a chair.. while Savage in the middle wondered wether he also should join in, already holding the fallen chair he had sat on prior..

"ME IZ DA UNORKY TAKAH" the mysterious Ork whispered.. sporting a big black hat.. holding the chair high above him for a deathblow..
Savage came to his feet still curious about the orkyverse remark.. "iz da orkyverse gug?"

da unorky takah slowly lowered his chair.. and turned to Savage calmly.. "da orkyverse.. kan iz gug.. bud.. kan iz badz.. id iz .. all orky livez.. da orky iz.."
"RUEEGAJAT" Bulk Gruoghan yelled as he threw his chair against da unorky takah's head tearing his hat off.. (only) .. "WAAGH CHEOO BRAGHH GHANNN" da unorky takah yelled in turn dropkicking into Bulk.. while Savage crawled out of the pub back on his hands and feet..

Outside of it he rolled down into the gutter and nearly drowned in a puddle as it had started raining heavily.. "slim....things.." he reminisced.. as he came to his feet.. ..so .. there was an orkyverse.. a creation by mork that amalgamated all orky lives lived by one orky soul into one supernal memory.. but this memory.. was so fractalized.. so .. dilluted..

His brother 'Bulk' had always been jealous of him for being a bit of a weirdboy.. having visions all the time.., and would always deny or violently oppose them.. especially when others would give credence to it.. and now again this had resulted into a big fight..

Savage sighed.. he had to find out more about this.. these past lives coming back to haunt him.. if they really were some sort of gift of Mork.. or possibly Gork.. or rather.. some kind of Orky evolution.. he wanted to understand it.

"From nuw on.. me iz takingz on da title of da weirdboy offishully" Savage swore.. shielding himself from the rain with his colorful and weird poncho.. and left the area..

He was never seen again, his adventures obscured by his solitude till his natural death.. and only some folklore remained of one titled "da puncho wan" .. having sought naught but the truth of Orky origin.

-

"Lat guna chum dat?"
Father Sernil Tiel spoke in his best Orkish..

He was a pastor of a secluded chapel surrounded by the nearby towns graveyard... having had problems with the dead not staying dead.. he had employed the help of a mercenary Ork who for reasons unknown had human-interest and qualities.

"iz nub wahm"
"den pud id on da stove agin" Tiel kindly offered..

Noot-ded Jet was the mercenaries name, and he signed his contracts with the alias "da unklomp krumpah" attesting to his familiarity with taking out the undead.

Noot-ded ate his soup.. then grabbed a big ballchain and headed to the door.. "mak me more of dat for wen me getz bak"
Every night the dead would rise from their graves.. and if not dealt with stroll into town with consequence..

A belly's full of soup every single day and the fun of whacking things in the skull at nightfall was enough for Noot-ded to work this job for atleast a few years.
As expected the yard was full of em again, small rotten hands clawing their way up from the soggy soil while full skeletons already confusingly wobbled around looking for whatever to learn on.. or bite.
"UN!!" *crunch*
"UNNN!!" *choggg*
"UUU..NNN!!" *whack*
Noot-ded swung and crashed his ballchain into the necks of skeletons over and over, almost dancing while twirling around on his axle..

Lately the skeletons were raising more often and in greater number.. it seemed as if there were more skeletons raising than there had been burials even' and father Tiel had speculated wether it was being done by some dark force.. perhaps even a necromancer hiding in town..

They had been so busy dealing with the nightly increase that Tiel had not even had the chance to visit town itself to inquire and he was worried wether it was still there..

"Iz calm agin.."
Noot-ded came backinto the chapel resting his weapon, "got da chum?"

Tiel gestured to the table and as Noot-ded started on his fresh meal he decided.. "I go tu tuwn".. "luuk da tuwn ta luuk iz gug"
Noot-ded scratched his head.. "why da tuwn nub gug?, we iz keepin da unies krump'd"..
Tiel sighed.. "You may not understand what I'm saying now but.. we're short on food.."
Noot-ded looked at Tiel with a questioning frown unsure what had just been conveyed..
Tiel continued in Orky blah; "Lat.. stayz ere.. keep da unies outa da baze"
Noot-ded nodded.. "datz gunna"

In the next morning.. Noot-ded found Tiel had left.. and where Tiel's hat had hung on the wall was now a bag full of carrots and herbs.. smelling like the oh so familiar brew Tiel always boiled for him..

-

Days passed.. Tiel had not come back to the chapel.. while the skeletons were still increasing as much as the difficulty to dispatch them..
Weeks passed and Noot-ded was becoming worried.. as much as about Tiel.. the bag of carrots and herbs had lost their smell.. with the few carrots remaining shriveled dead..

Though Noot-ded managed on drinking boiled water with a few herbs he was getting hungry.. and in the third week he was conflicted over wether to leave the chapel to the undead and run off for greener pastures, new jobs and fresh food.. or look for Tiel.. who had been so kind to him..
The skeletons sometimes rose back from the ground moments after they had been knocked back into it.. and an eerie violet mist was covering the soil wherever the moonlight touched.

Waiting at the chapel was no longer an option, and on entering the fourth week Noot-ded grabbed his chainball not for the graveyard but for the long run, he had enough.
To get to the town to search for Father Sernil Tiel was his next and final mission for his client, so he equipped himself a bit more than usual.. and swung himself a way through the hordes in the yard.. then through more hordes on the road!.. and even more inland!..

-

Having reached town the sight were terrible.. the graveyard had never ended.. both the chapelgrounds, the road, the land and the entire town were.. one giant graveyard..
Everything had been turned undead.. absolutely everything..
No wonder poor father Tiel had never returned.. he could've never survived..

Perhaps he had been right about there having been a necromancer in town, killing and raising more and more while Noot-ded had been busy trying to remove but a fraction of it..
The deeper in town Noot-ded ventured.. the more he started to come to the conclusion that the reach of this infestation was without limit.. that it was quite possible that there was nowhere left to run..

Every step he took more and more grasping and clawing hands rose up all around, from every house climbed out skeletal remains, and from even the cobblestones rose up that drasted violet mist..

-
"ughhh"
"What da mork iz lat doin?!"
Nubgruk helped up Oothed..
"lat geep'd lat's hedknah" (you cut your skull)
.."iz .. blud"(there's blood)
Oothed felt around his head.. "me iz unOrky.."(I'm undead)

"YUB LAT TUUP"(yes you stupid) Nubgruk shook him around.. "lat tryz ta geep hed uf??"(you try to cut your head off??)
Oothed grabbed onto Gruk.. "tryz ta becum klompblud"(trying to become full of battle lust)
"Orgoth" (an ork lord)
"..az lat" (like you)

Nubgruk realised.. his newly aquired CybOrk state had left Oothed in the dust.. he was so amazed and impressed that he too wanted to die and time travel to attain new skills..
"wuz da do id?" (what happened after?)

.. Oothed ..somewhat wondering wether he had cut a bit too deep into his brain.. suddently remembered all the lives he had experienced.. perhaps there was something to it..

Perhaps all of it had not been brain damage induced hallicunations.. or dreams.. but the envisioning of the Orkyverse.. multiple past lives.. reunited into the memory of his current existence.. all these personalities once incorporated behind a veil.. explanatory for his character now quite vivid.

"Iz.. reddy gug..." (its fine already) Oothed smiled.. "me iz Orgoth nuw"(I'm an ork lord now)
Ah.. yes.. the Orkyverse.. it had to exist.. it had to be connected to Mork.. and now Oothed sensed it inside.. as much as all around him..
"..az lat". (like you)

-
END.

Three wrecking ball manifestations of Oothed's past lives! How tho!
Well, if you want to understand anything about this anomaly -read the spoilered story-.

So for this month I have just the guy… a Strider from Firefight! Don’t play the game but love the model, and it will be my first time painting anything ‘robotic’ as opposed to organic…

Very keen to get on with this!

Is this contest just for wargame miniatures, or are other models allowed too? I would like to enter with Apocalypse tank in 1:35 scale

Cap, more Harlies! I feel your pain. Or rather I can only imagine, having avoided such numbers of back to back harlequins for years. You are a master of dogged determination. Also, Mr Pointy Great Harlequin. I used to have him and now I don’t and I’m sad. So always lovely to see a classic on the painting challenge.

I on the other hand am doing something gifted me by my brother just last weekend.

OH NO!

The Rancor!

Pretty much anything that could be vaguely called a miniature is fair game. Scale models, busts, figurines, toy repaints. It’s all good. Just get us a start picture from an unpainted/simple base and get up and running.

Ooh, a Strider. I went all in on the first Deadzone KS, and so have a lot of walkers for all of the different factions, most of which are still bare restic. I look forward to seeing how you approach the model.

I’m genuinely excited to start this model, so different to what I have tackled before and it just has a great character! For the meantime, I am set on how I am tackling the main body and plates but undecided on the canopy color at this point… two in mind…

Old Eldar will always make me smile. And a Rancor! Neat stuff showing up already.

I am in with a literal and metaphorical wrecking ball. Razorfang, the alpha chieftain of the Razorback Growlers from VOR. Unstoppable fury, and what feels like pounds of metal covered in sharp bits. Another model I have had laying around forever getting his moment in the sun thanks to the monthly challenge.

Was originally thinking just the aggressors, but that captain is a hold over from the 8th edition starter, and now that HQs are armor locked to units they can join, I have yet another reason to get him done. And as an additional stretch goal, the original living 40k battering ram redone in modern styles and substances, the SK from the Leviathan box.

Despite their bulky armour, many Slaaneshi renegades move with the same balletic grace and swiftness as daemonettes.

Not all of them though.

I was browsing a newsagent a while back and found this one lonely issue of Imperium with a Kataphron Whatever, and thought that'd be good conversion fodder (twice over as it turned out, the head and arms are on a whole other miniature). I like to think this one used to be an Iron Warrior, but was just a little bit too insistent that they had to call it 'penetrating' the enemy's defences rather than breaching, until the other Iron Warriors complained to Inhuman Resources (of course there's HR in the Eye of Terror, where else would it be) and got them kicked out.

Yeah, I like the paint each year’s Christmas mini in November to make sure it’s done in time for Christmas, as I often don’t finish until the end of the month.

You can absolutely enter with your tank kit. Only I NEED to know what in the world that thing is and who thought it up?

It is a tank from game Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. At first I though it was a Mammoth tamk from the first game, so I made a heavy tank to accompany it on diorama and to test the painting scheme.
The model is really big so I hope I will complete it in this month.

I got one of those too!!! Damn... I won't be able to work on my this round, otherwise I would of joined you .
Btw, it is not from Red Alert 3. It is the Apocalypse Soviet Tank from Red Alert 2, the one from 3 looks different. (Not even from 2, that model is an approximation at best, There are no official RedAlert licensed kits out on the market) and I have looked, closest kits in theme to Red Alert are the Alliance and SSU from DUST tactics.
The mammoth tank you though of first is a GDI heavy tank from C&C Tiberium Sun series.

At some point I will get to the C&C themed series.
Made some terrain

And
I began work on some predator GDI tanks here

Apologies for the delay in updating the league table

Finally got it updated, been a busy time at work recently so hobby time has been limited.

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/732117.page#9481149

My idea for this month is either genius or proof ive finally lost it.

I'm going to do a Savage Ork dressed as Miley Cyrus swinging on a wrecking ball (as per the video)
Proof

I'm not familiar with her oeuvre, but are you sure "dressed" is the correct word here? Either way, this sounds like a brilliant idea.

Nah, the belief that there's nothing orks can't loot is perfectly justified.

If I'd had time to prepare, I would have picked Miley for this month, too.

After stepping away from the last couple of challenges, I think I'll go ahead and throw my hat in the ring for this one. Proof:

Deathwing Knights aren't exactly subtle in how they wage war, bringing the wrath of the Unforgiven upon the Emperor's enemies with big spiky maces. Wrecking balls indeed. This is actually the back half of a squad; the first five models are among the first models I ever painted (four of those were my first ever entry into these challenges!). I'll be doing these with Contrast paints and Army Painter Speedpaints. I need them for games anyways so now's as good a time as any to paint them, right?

Here's where I am on the first minotaur:

He's going to be a challenge to photograph due to his leaning so far forward. I'll need to rig up a second light source, I think. I'd forgotten about his tight little buns and cheeky G-string-- this could very well be a Daia T'Nara model. I'm not entirely pleased with the wounds (whip-marks? Again, Daia T). I used a fairly deep red, but it looks more like he's glowing than bleeding.

Thanks, after building the model I definitelly see it is a modern tank, with lots of electronic gadgets. Especially this remote controlled machine gun looks like something made in 21st century.
The idea with GDI tanks is awesome, now I'm playing remastered first C&C game and these vehicles are great. Maybe I'll make GDI Abrams tank at some point in the future.

The alien fish is a Cetean Upior, it's a hybrid vampire deep one critter. I did strongly consider a black xenomorph scheme for it for that very reason, but ended up with the sickly pale version. The other is a Varcolac, gypsy werewolf, which is probably more green stuff than resin now. It's one of the early casts I reckon as the scale also seems more 28 than 32 (never mind the shoddy QC and mould slippage).

Happy days! Today I unmade half of my painting progress on Thor by spilling red paint over a finished area. It's an entirely new way of drawing out a painting project. Procrastination? Hah, that's for amateurs!

Good thing there's plenty of month left to fix it. Late in the month I'd have to go with it and claim that Thor is totally meant to bathe in the blood of his enemies.

Silly stuff just keeps happening with Crisis Protocol models. Assembly mishap on Hela, painting mishap on Thor, and Skurge's paintjob isn't up to my usual standard. I should rely give finishing a Marvel model without a hiccup a try...

A bit boring for the most part, staring at a road for 11 hrs a shift for a week strait, splitting night shift with team driver from 3am to 3 pm, sleep drive sleep drive. The job is dangerous that does not forgive mistakes, and rough on the health with poor movement, sleep, and food. But it has very low entry curve, pays well in proportion to how quick and cheap education for it was, and It is quite easy, like, 90% of the job is sitting in comphortable seat, holding the wheel while watching the road, snaking, and listening to something on youtube, for me its the lectures on science, history, theism, and debates.

I have seen some furry friends! And have not hit any,,,, yet. Although, there was once a mouse running across the road at night that was cutting it pretty close. I hope Lil guy is alright.
But furry friends are not a welcomed sight at 70 mil/ hr, super sketch and dangerous for both.

Lolz, Now the job would of been much more exciting if we had to carry crossbows with blessed silver tipped arrow, and matching witch-hunter hats, to shoot off anything furry things that would attempt to chase down trucks

Progress on Ungrim

Varcolac, Romanian for werewolf, love it! You know, in Romanian folklore there isn’t really a distinction between vampires and werewolves… they are the same thing (Varcolac). This is why Stoker originally had Dracula wolfing out a great deal more…

I think it sounds like a great job…I’d do it if I was younger and had less commitments. I’m still slogging it in the building game though…

Still, anything that doesn’t involve an office is a plus in my book!

As for silver tipped arrows… you might need a few in the cab if some people are to be believed! Reason I couldn’t resist commenting is I have heard a few truck drivers tell tales of big, bipedal wolves flanking them at night. One story in particular had a truck driver swearing he had to shoot it before it got in the cab with him! Not great nighttime listening though …

Maybe wait to listen to those stories when you are back behind some solid walls! Haha

Yeah it’s mind boggling what some folk claim to witness for sure… not sure I believe any of them but for some bizarre reason people keep coming forward saying they have seen these things. Maybe boredom, maybe hallucinations, maybe attention seeking, maybe clandestine scientific abominations escaped from labs, maybe not, who knows…. maybe just good old fashioned lycanthropes… haha

Half the month has passed by and I haven't even started yet, but I voted Wrecking Ball because I wanted to paint the Gorgers from the new Warcry box so here is my entry.

I should still have enough time to paint them since they are basically one color and a few details.
Btw I forgot and added the first wash on the one that is shamefully looking away. Hope that's not a problem.

And with that, I think my Wrecking Ball entry is done:

I may add a 5th model to the mix, though I did the wee terrain piece for this too - but I like the sense of these 2 terrible women transforming into even more monstrous beings and... Coming in like a wrecking ball. Plus, the sheer amount of repair work that I had to do on these bloody models that were wrecks in the first place feels very on-brand.

Which turns into...

And

Becomes

Miley Sirens

Here are some WIP photos of the minotaurs:

This guy is mostly done, but I need to step away for a bit. Looking at these photos, I can see that his horns are too dark, and I need to lighten his hair some. The studded arm bands reminded me of Rob Halford, so I made him blonde, but all the various browns are kind of running together.

I've only done the skin and fur on this guy so far. I may go with black leather for all his belts.

Haven't worked on them that much, been extremely busy with work.

I think I'll do their bases first, its going to be a narrow finish I'm afraid.

I'm making progress at a rate of one layer of paint a day. But today is Sunday and it's even sunny. I may actually get two layers in today. My head is spinning just thinking of that breakneck pace!

That's not exactly how I wanted to paint Thor, but it is a way of finishing him. Almost there and still plenty of month left.

Oh No! The Rancor!

Calling myself done with this. (Rather than the paint job on the mini being actually done.) I’m not a big fan of larger minis if I’m honest, and there’s a bunch of bits and pieces I could tidy up but I’m bored of it and it’s fine and I don’t mind the little flaws, it looks good on the tabletop and I’m moving on to painting other things.

Thanks to this challenge it got painted at all and for that I’m very grateful to have you all to paint with. Big thanks and looking forward to seeing the rest of the entries coming in.

Ooh, big and fleshy!
So, replacements came from Tt Combat

Excitingly, they've sent the new female Varcolac sculpt. Now I'm going to have to decide whether to make rope and runes to turn it into a Moon Eater (character werewolf)... as there's SO much time left.

We still have 1/3rd of the month left. Stop making the rest of us look bad.

If you think you are done, just a friendly reminder that you can enter up to 5 related models. So go back and paint some more stuff. If you have more the 5, you can pick the best 5 to enter.

Go on, git. Go back to the paintbench and do more.

If it’s just FEC, that’s not a loss on an EPIC scale. Get hooked by the new Legions Imperialis? That’s an epic addition to the pile of shame

Edit:
The new ghouls do look nice. I never got into adding them to my Undead army back in the day. Not because they didn’t fit thematically (They were rot free, which was my benchmark) but they were metal and I would have needed a big block of them. With the way things are structured these days, I’ll just stick with my nighthaunt and soulblights.

Looking forward to seeing what you will do with them!

Soul blights are great! I see your point about the Imperialis though…lots of work there for sure

As long as I get a copy of the units I will be starting work on them by January… maybe first in next years lineup for the comp if the theme fits! I do have a lot of plastic stacking up though… my partner has started talking about the need for ‘storage solutions’

Wow! There are some AWESOME contenders finished already! Genuinely, loads of really brilliant work. I already know voting is going to be super tough…again!

I am calling this fella done. My first foray into the world of ‘robotic’ miniatures… only painted organic stuff so far. I have to admit, I had an absolute blast working on this model. Loved every second of it. In particular trying to get the weathering, dirt and battle damage onto the panels was just a lot of fun and a nice change from glazing and highlighting skin…

I will be building more mechs in the future…

Here he is… his name…. is Robert Paulson…

One Ork 100% finished and on its base, will still add some detail to the base though.
Second Ork (angry savage is his name! brotherrr) is being painted atm in the flashy pallet of legends.
Third Ork will probably still need some green stuff on his ball (NOT THAT BALL)

p.s. robert paulson will definately get one of my votes, thats a beauty.

Yeah actually did some work on Angry Savage again, using the color scheme of the wrestler he's based on (randy savage) in FLASHY rosy pink and eye-incinerating marker yellow. Also made his weapon look wooden to honor the code of arms in wrestling. (usually chairs etc)

The 3rd Ork is also being peppered, still need to do both their bannerstands to their backs but did start on them, and also need to do some lining.

Lastly will add some fluff to the bases in the form of miniature chips/leaves.

dw on robert paulson, his name shall not be forgot.

Despite delays brought about by important matters like catching every fish in NieR: Automata (haven't done it yet, but working on it), she's done.

Slaaneshi Terminator Lord Obsidia:

I'll be the first to admit that's a pretty mediocre Botticelli, but he had 2.8m of canvas and I had a shoulder pad the size of a blowfly's butt. Why is it there? Watsonian answer, I like to imagine the Emperor, for all his faults, made a point of preserving copies of humanity's great artworks in a vault somewhere so they'd survive our various self-inflicted dark ages until he got fed up and took charge personally, and the Emperor's Children would totally plaster it all over their armour at every opportunity, even once they'd gone nuts. Doylist answer, doing a warband with no uniform warband symbol because they're too egotistical and insist on all doing their own individual thing means I'm out of easy ideas for what to put on their blank shoulder pads, so the first thing in my line of sight when I'm trying to think of something wins. Come to think of it I could get quite a few squads out of the Animal Crossing art gallery.

Joining the party fashionably late.

Been playing Baldur's Gate 3 so much during the last few months, that the game has invaded my painting desk as well.
So who better to represent the "Wrecking Ball", than the "Best gal Karlach".

Got the model two days ago from a friend. Fresh from the printer.

Progress pics from last night.
First one in spoilers, as it's without the chest piece and NSFW.
Spoiler:

Test fitting the armor piece, which will be glued on after the underlying model is finished.

Ways to do before it's done, so not sure if I'm going to manage before the deadline.
No pressure though, it's done when it's done.

The 27th is the perfect time to start an extra model, right?

The critter on the left is the replacement Varcolac (gyspy werewolf) that TT sent me, however, they sent me the new female sculpt so I've converted it into a Moon Eater (addition of ropes and runes) which is an extra vicious, destructive, soul-sucking version of the beastie. The extra Agalope has also had the mouth resculpted by me and, if it turns out better than the miscast one, will replace it. Hurry hurry!

Less of a perfect fit for the theme, but I like the painting much better, so...
proof:

Hey folks, everyone's entries look awesome so far.

Just a quick couple pics for an update, I should hopefully get it finished off tomorrow.

I managed to strip it best I could, not sure if enamels where used by the previous owner, some parts seem a little melted, but might just be old paint. Lets call it metal fatigue, all those alien atmosphere's will take it's toll.

I used some sprue frame for making the railings and I managed to grab a few little bits to stick on, some barrels /dozer blade and missile and armor for the tracks (not sure if these are meant for the basilisk I had to cut some of the front artillery panel off to fit them in, maybe stuck them on wrong)

Slight gripe is the commissar's mask doesn't have one of those oxygen box things on his belt for the hose going into but never mind pretty happy with the head swap

I know we still have some month to go, but the agressors are not going to make it in time, and I don’t want to rush them and end up with minis I’m not happy with. So just the SK, which was going to be a stretch goal, but now is the main event.

But he’s plenty of wrecking ball! The original SK was billed as a living battering ram, and the new guy (despite his new plastic body) still looks the part. Pretty happy with how he turned out.

For da latz dat had nub red da story yed..

"..az lat". (like you)

-
END.

I shall, but for this month I shall have to withdraw, as my entry never got further than the proof pic stage.

Quick WIP of my entry:

2 days to go and haven't even blocked in the main armor color? Madness, right? Believe it or not, I'll probably still finish, although I may not get the bases done. I'll certainly give it the old college try.

@Nevelon, I'll probably need the traditional one day extension...

Where did you get the idea that you could just waltz in here and ask for an extension? Who put you up to it?! Oh wait, that was me.

Sure thing. Let’s see, the last day of the month is on Thursday, so we’ll push things back until the end of Friday. Or more practically Saturday morning over my second cup of coffee. December will go up Friday morning as normal.

If an extra day helps, you can have that. If not, good luck with December!

Well, I like to live dangerously, so I got 2 more minis done:

My converted Moon Eater and (slightly) converted Agalope, who replaces the previous one I'd planned to enter.
New group shot:

Miley Siren's Wrecking Crew really should crop the edges of that photo

And individual shots in the spoiler block

FINISHED!
No time to make a proper base or fix the hole-/-missing banner-/-ruined scales on the back will do the repairs later. Camera still broken, phone pictures.

Glad to be able to participate this round!
I am not a huge fan of NMM but Ungrim needed attention. Also, through the green details will fit him into the jade-slayers I did earlier.

I love "armor".

Haha yeah. The good old video game armour.

Against all odds, better known as "skipping all my chores and having multiple very long painting sessions", I managed to get Karlach done!

Truly a fun model to paint!
First larger scale mini I've painted. It was a nice change of pace compared to all the 40k models I've done over the years.

Good luck on the final stretch!

Thanks, theCrowe!

Nice work, Ezki!

All done. Razorfang, Alpha Chieftan of the Razorback Growlers. From the long-dead VOR: The Maelstrom.

Quite a beast. A wrecking ball in all regards. Nice to have finally painted him. Kudos to the monthly challenge for getting some of the models out of mothballs and on the shelf.

Great work again, everyone!

As I expected, I didn't have much time this month to paint so they are still not finished.
Here's where I am today.

The 3 in the from are finished other than 1 or 2 metallic parts. I will try to finish the other 2 today if I find some time.
And tomorrow I will take some better photos of the first 3 or maybe all 5 if I manage to finish them all.

I just managed to finish in time thankfully.

Here is my Death Korps Basilisk with head swap commissar, first tank I have painted, I think I was a little heavy handed with the weathering dust but never mind

New month is up:
https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/812278.page

For Dec I’ve just set the end date at the end of the 1st. A lot of people have New Year’s Day off, might as well use it to take pictures of the minis we were painting to kill time waiting for the year to end.

Here we go final pics up

This is a very literal interpretation of the this months Theme

An Ork Wrecking Ball complete with Morky Cyrus - This entry is a bit of fun really, I couldn't quite get the Ork to sit in the right posse but I think the effect is close enough, theres only so much Ork Buttock people can take.

Fraid I'm gonna have to bow out even with the extra day. IRL stuff came up that kind of took away all my time this evening and I'm now just too tired to paint. Oh well. Can't say I didn't try, at least.

Yesterday didn't really go as planned so they are not finished yet. No need to wait for me either.
The good thing is that they are almost finished so I'm happy about that.
Maybe I will post some photos when they are finished just to have them here.

Headache of doom, in the sauna to try and keep the symptoms away next week!

No rush for anyone else with a reason to almost intentionally cry.
Headache seems like my favourite thing of all time getting over it.

Made a mistake with the amount of flock, thats where i'm at with the basing basics right now.

Lot of amazing stuff this month.

Fun aside: I’d never actually seen/heard the infamous video/song for “Wrecking Ball” Decided to check it out to maybe link it into the vote thread. I can see why there was some controversy when it came out...

If you can get the pics up I’ll add you to the poll. I know you needed the extra day, and left it open for an extra 24 hours in addition to that, but I needed to get a move on.

You will miss out on the early votes, but will still get some points/credit for participating in the round. And people will get to see your models!

Hope you feel better.
