Welcome all to the 107th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This month, keep an eye out for what comes From the Shadows -- A knife in the dark, camouflaged sniper, or any blow that your opponent will never see coming. Subtlety and deception should be the order of the day. Or go metaphysical; things live in the shadows... Frightening things. In the places between the lights is another world full of horrors and danger. Sometimes all of the above, as the warped cultist slinks out of the shadows to slip a knife in with the 3rd hand he shouldn’t naturally have.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of January and will end at midnight EST on January 31st. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
I have a few assassins and bushwhackers to pick from. I'll see what I feel like working on the most. Currently Rebel snipers for Legion and Hawkeye for Crisis Protocol are at the top of my shortlist.
Well I figure one of this lot came from the shadows.
I saw gobert’s painted cluedo set on here and remembered that I had intended to do this at some point, so here goes. Mrs White has already been started but then I can’t enter more than 5 anyway.
Hmm, first thought for this month was some old Necromunda Delaque gangers, but appropriately enough, I can't find the sneaky little buggers. So instead I might paint some of these elves and skaven
Hello! I am a hobbiest painter looking to improve my socialization in the miniature painting community and try my hand at some friendly online compititions.
I am certianly a fourm noob, so my advanced apologies for any mistakes.
My entry for "From the Shadows" will be this Banshee bust from Loot Studios. Im thinking of trying out OSL and an airbrush to help fit the theme
I was actually at a bit of a loss for this one, since my Slaaneshis do it with the lights on and insist on their enemies seeing them coming - but moving swiftly on from that mental image, then I remembered I'd picked up that Battle For Eternia game a while back with all its expansions, including the perfect candidate, Shadow Weaver:
...and the Horde Wraiths, because I've got a couple weeks off this January so just one mini feels a bit lazy.
I literally have no idea whatsoever to do for this round…
Well, at the top of my list is the new Flesh Eater Courts box set. However, I am still very undecided on how to tackle the skin, and this gives me pause as I really want to do a nice job on them. Soooo… even though it fits perfectly, no can do…
That leaves, um, well got some deadwalker zombies I could build up and they might make good practice for FEC skintones. Failing that, could tackle the Vargskyr or maybe the Lictor I bought on a whim a couple of weeks back.

I’m feeling a bit lost
Zombies to test skintones sounds good. Lictors are also very on-brand for the month. Do both, and see what you like best to enter.
I’m going to try to get the combi weapon LT and the VR leapers from the leviathan box done.

Yeah I think you’re right… doing say 10 zombies should give me a good canvas to try out skintones for the ghouls. I think I’ll go with that. Cheers for the final push, I was having trouble committing there!
Look forward to seeing those VR Leapers… they’re great models! I’ll save my Lictor for another month I think… unless I get ahead of schedule!
From the shadow of space mine came the space dwarves (who are technically humans) - Votann warriors for my Sagitaur I made in the previous month . I know there are only five models allowed, I will choose the best ones from the squad for the competition.
Well, I got this fella for Xmas in my nerds' secret santa, and I primed him with half a mind to do him last month before I actually stuck to my guns and finished what I'd previously started:
The Black Spectre is a literal being of living shadow, torn apart and reassembled by the energies of the apocalyptic Rent of the world of Carnevale.
Base was done and basecoated, kitbash done (as best I can sculpting the openings with greenstuff I'm not that good at but whatev) to make the carpace look the way I wanted it (and yes I first looked if it would fit with the gun yes).
Started a bit with the bottom layer green. Gonna be groovy.

I've painted that miniature before! The full model is pretty cool but a little small for detail work. I'm looking forward to this one.
I did it again... I started painting a model on a whim, almost finished it, realized it would have actually fit this month's theme... and I don't have a proof photo
KidCthulhu wrote: I did it again... I started painting a model on a whim, almost finished it, realized it would have actually fit this month's theme... and I don't have a proof photo
Get in the habit of taking start pictures of everything. You have an older build pic you can use as proof? The pic itself doesn’t need to be from the first of the month, just to show where you started on the mini. There is a lot of trust here. The reason for proof pics is less about keeping people honest about doing everything in the month (although it does that job) but to help give people ideas, crossfire inspiration, and build community.
XvArcanevX wrote: Out of curiosity…and so I know in time for next months submission.
I know you can submit your entry photo assembled and primed, but does that include zenithal priming?
I will be doing a zenithal for next months so thought I’d ask rather than hazard a guess and get shot down in flames….
Yah, that’s fine. Nobody said your prime job needs to be uniform. Mine are often spotty as heck, but not in any controlled, intentional way.
Haha! Thanks for the heads up! Talking priming, I have used chaos black from a can and going to zenithal with mechanicus standard grey can over that tomorrow. Hopefully I don’t get too bad a ‘mottled’ effect as people seem to mention but my theory goes, if that happens, I can tidy it up with a dry brush of grey anyway…
Let’s see just how spectacularly wrong I am this time…lol
I'll be most likely painting Shadowheart from Baldur's Gate. NomNom Minis released their version two weeks ago and I had to have it. I'll post a proof picture when I get the model from a friend who is printing it.
Been lining up half a dozen prints for him and somehow more and more are emerging to the queue
Ugh, I started painting something (was smart enough to get a "before" photo this time) and made really good progress, but it doesn't really fit this month's theme
One of the most dangerous creatures of the shadows is of course an alley gambling dwarf.

Man, they really are!
Especially the new sculpts are fire. I got the drunk dwarfs too. One gripe is that the "black" or dark gray series plastic for the new models is similarly rubbery to bones white plastic, and thus similarly difficult to remove mold lines cleanly. Will try to throw them in freezer for an hr or so next time before de-mold-lineing, maybe that will help.
I'm giving Ahsoka another try. She's been sitting basecoated on my desk for the last half year and I've been feeling good about Legion models lately. Fits the theme well that she's coordinating a terrorist network.
Kind of a weird model. I get why the designers want sculpted recesses on her head. It probably helps the average painter get the markings right. But somehow they didn't do any on her third lekku. No idea what the thinking there was.
So, I'm done with indecision now. If I happen to finish her early, I may even throw in a Rebel sniper or two as a bonus.
KidCthulhu wrote:While I prefer the original sculpt of the Black Spectre, you did a really great paintjob!
Thanks mate, very kind of you. Here's the finished article:
The Black Spectre, an unholy fusion of father and son, fuelled by rage, resentment and the arcane energies of the Rent.
A being of living shadow with its victims caught in it ethereal form.
I really enjoyed doing the mask(s)
The model is usual shown with hands that are made from shadow, but I wanted a different look, for colour variation as much as anything else.
Loved doing this. All came together in the end, once I figured out my colours.
Here they all are but will post the best five later for ‘official’ entries. I still have an awful lot of time left this month. Hmmm…. do I do the final 10 zombies or something else….
My Votann warriors are ready, this month it was fast . I painted them mostly with the Speedpaint paints, except the heads which are shaded with artistic oil paint. Great thing in the Votann kits is that the heads are connected to the sprue only on the neck, it is easy to paint them before glueing to the model. I especially like the lady with the rocked launcher, this head makes her look a little like Vasquez from Aliens .
The Thin Man and his Black Eyed Children are finished:
For some reason, my phone camera wouldn't focus on the Children's faces, which I guess is appropriate. I'll see if I can't take better photos, and replace these if I am able.
Seems that there are a lot of finished entries already this month; cold weather is good painting motivation. I’ve finished mine too and realized that if I pull my burna out of my kommandos squad, I’ll need another kommando to replace him so I kitbashed up a slasha boy with some arms from the old ork boys kit. In case I get him done in time too, I’ll enter both and here’s the proof pic:
Well, I just finished . . . kitbashing.
So I’ll start painting soon, just have to prime it all. It’s -7 F degrees here right now, that’s -21 C for everyone else in the world who uses a system of measurement that actually makes sense.
But in the meantime here’s the proof pic. A crisis commander I converted into Commander Shadowsun. Perhaps a bit on the nose, but her name has the word shadow in it.

-21F?! And I thought it got cold here...
That's a fun, dynamic model. Where is the head from?
-21 C. Still cold, but not quite that bad.
The head is from Broken Anvil Miniatures. The guns are almost comically large, but it seems fun. I took a crisis commander and put some dollar store parts together.
After New Year's Eve, we had a full week of -20C to -32C. The current -7 feels almost like you don't even need a jacket haha.
But yeah, I'm not a fan of the cold either. I start to swear when the temperature gets below 10C. Sometimes I think I'm adopted from a far warmer country.
Anyway, Shadowheart fresh from the printer. Even her name comes From the shadows
Some progress as well. Blocking out the colors and trying to get a feel for the metallics.
I did not realize how many metallic parts and details this model has. Much more than Karlach had.
So I might have bit more than I can chew haha.
Well, I'll post her anyway by the end of the month. Finished or not.
Good thing the month is only half over because after I finally settled on a model I promptly got sick and couldn't paint for a few days. Just might luck.
Two weeks should be fine, though, at least if not much else gets in the way. I started work on Ahsoka and have a good feeling about it.
This piece has lots of shadows, but I am taking photos from different angles to show the details instead.
If you look carefully, you will even see some garbage in the corners on the ground level, chains hanging from a bulk head, some identity markings on plates, etc.
Nevelon wrote:Just a friendly reminder that we are running out of month, so get cracking!
Also, any ideas for next month to wrap of this cycle of the comp? Almost time to put up the poll thread.
How about...
Teamwork makes the dream work
or
Winter is Coming
Looks outside at the 6” of snow and sub-freezing temps. I think winter is already here. Not a bad call for a wintery theme though. Not sure if I could stomach putting one of those corp-speak buzz phrases on the poll. We’ll see. (Those kind of saying get tossed around a lot at my office)
Well, the winter theme was likewise in mind mind given the weather. As for the other one, I thought that it could be open to interpretation in lots of interesting ways - including a mean gang of corporate shills!
inmygravenimage wrote: Well, the winter theme was likewise in mind mind given the weather. As for the other one, I thought that it could be open to interpretation in lots of interesting ways - including a mean gang of corporate shills!
It’s a good idea. You could do things like artillery spotters, master/blaster combos, wizards and familers, or just a cohesive squad of minis for any system. KT teams would be an easy fix.
So open enough for interpretation, but focused enough to to leverage brainstorms in a fast-fail synergistic environment to maximize gains!
It’s not looking good for my cluedo set. Entirely down to my sudden obsession with drawing a Burrows and Badgers graphic novel! I just don’t Care to do anything else right now, even my latest Tonks bat rep is stalling over this thing. Can’t write, can’t paint, it’s just draw draw draw.
For next month's theme, how about "Let's Finish This"? Soldiers prepped for the big battle, two arch-enemies in a duel, a sniper ready for that one, perfect shot. In meta terms, we could tackle something we have been meaning to get around to, or else those last few models from a starter box.
Thought I should post some Proofs up since we are 2/3rds of the way though the month
I went for something new and different, some Scouts on horses from a very recent Kickstarter (Victoria Miniatures) that I'm going to paint up in Tanith/Gaunts Ghosts Colours, I wanted to do something sneaky to add to the Tanith models I have but as a have a lot nomral troops already though id go past the lore and have something they might us (horses instead of a big loud vehicle for stealth work)
Also as a bonus I moved my models to a new display cabinet as I'd filled up the old one! Click on the images to see a bigger version if you want to know what's on each shelf.
I'm coming to this quite late, but I just remember to check the Dakka monthly painting challenge and feel inspired by the theme. I'll see if I can build, sculpt details, and paint my idea in 10 days.
I'd thought I wouldn't enter this because I didn't have anything shadowy. I was thinking assassins and weirdos that sort of thing. But then I realised Dwarves live in shadows all the time. Particularly these lovely space dwarf miners.
Ye proofe pictures from a year agone. (Had to put two pictures because I didn't put the same 5 together)
And the completed 5, looking suitably shadowy. These are my Hernkyn Miners.
I was halfway through base coating my 2nd lad for this month and I wanted him to look a bit more “Freebootery”, and since he has bangles on both arms, I figured some big hoop earrings would help pull his whole ensemble together neatly:
Making jump rings and getting them to fit just right was way more challenging than I anticipated.
My completed model this month - I am very blown away and inspired by the submissions so far. Happy to join the group! I will definitely need to pick up my game

I have definitely seen a lot of improvement in my painting since joining these Challenges. Onward and upward!

Same here, whenever I look at even the paints I did a year ago I have jumped in quality tenfold and I know I owe it to this thread. (take that as advertisement to join, people who haven't yet!)
@Xyabis: Looking great! I will join the chorus with the others: these challenges certainly push me to try new things and to step outside my comfort zone.
Speaking of stepping out of the comfort zone:
Some progress with Shadowheart. Decided to stick with NMM on the armor, which takes a long long time.
Especially when I'm not very confident when it comes to placing the reflections etc.
Starting to look more and more like I'm not getting her finished by the end of the month.
Trying my best though
Got a bit more painting time in this week and although I'm cutting it closer than I should, I'm confident I'll finish on time. Only a few layers of highlights left to go.
I might even procrastinate a little. I have a new paint in the mail that I may want to use, but the rail workers began a strike on the same day my order was dispatched. It's not vitally important, but if I have the time I'll wait. Otherwise I guess I'll mix something for the last highlight.
Almost done with my Leapers, still need to base them. Not sure if the LT is going to make it across the line. We’ll see how productive this weekend is.
It doesn't bode well that I haven't finished building and sculpting the details yet, but here's a little progress. I'm making my very first Alpha Legion mini because it felt too perfect for the theme.
Nothing fancy, but I did get my entry for this month done (actually finished the models over a week ago, just didn't feel like dragging out the lightbox until last night and then I couldn't get on Dakka for some reason to upload the photos). Here are the final pics of my Xenomorphs from Aliens: Another Glorious Day In The Corps:
Like I said, nothing fancy really. I tried to get a bluish tint on the models as they are often seen in bluish light in the movie (I think, it's been a hot minute since the last time I watched it), and I gave them a good all-over gloss coat as they always look shiny. I'm pretty happy with them for sure. Plenty of other neat entries coming in too, so it should be a good month as always for voting.
I didn't get the slasha boy finished (and won't) in time, but from the shadows comes another kommando burna. I've had this theory that less is more lately, and ran with it on this guy. The thought is he should be all business and covered in ash, so I didn't stray too far from grayscale for most of his gear. I also switched up my usual photography style a bit to better match the theme. Hope you like him, final pics:
Decal Detail in my usual photography style:
Good luck to all still trying to complete an entry, there's still some January left!

Thanks for the shout out! I messed around for a good while with that yellow dress! It was practically green at one point! I’m pleased with how they turned out though..
Your work looks stellar and I’m really impressed with you tackling the nmm on your projects. It’s definitely a mind bender and a demanding process getting the required effect. I want to tackle it in due time. Lovely work though… looking forward to seeing the final pics…
Can't wait till thursday to start on my new challenge entry heh..
Gonna have to cut up some legs to position differently but I think I'll be fine there.
Didn't have any spare legs other than whats in the newly opened box.. -_-
Proof pic for the first model I started painting this month, a Raven Guard consul for my 30k army. I painted most of this model really quickly, then got totally sidetracked by another model... the second model also fits the theme pretty much, so I might enter that one as well. I'll post another proof for that one if I do get it done in time.
I've still got to do some highlighting on this one and also eye lenses and finishing the base. Plus I'm having a go at some freehanding on the cloak... wish me luck...

Good luck! Raven Guard fits this theme perfectly, I like your choice.
I have finally finished building/sculpting my Alpha Legionary. I think that only means one day to try to paint it.

OK, let’s see where we are at the end of Thursday. We don’t want to be painting on Groundhog Day. That will just lead to touching up the same part of the model over and over again...
I didn't get the Skaven done that I was planning - I got as far as building them but didn't have the motivation to paint them. When I finally forced myself to start I noticed I hadn't filled in some joins which completely killed what little inspiration I had, so they went back to the pile of shame, replaced by some quick night goblins at the last minute
@Maharg, those are some really great last minute goblins!
I've finished my Raven Guard model apart from the base, so as soon as I've done that I'll get photos done. Haven't finished my second model, so if people don't mind I'll take the extension of a day, too, to see if I can get her done...
@Ezki: Thanks so much Ezki To be honest, I'm jealous of your amazing painting skills.
The one day extension will be nice, that way I don't have to lose any sleep to finish. I've primed and gotten a base coat and layer down on the armor. I'm trying some new things, but it's not turning out too well. I'll still try to finish it up tomorrow.

Got back from a work trip late last night so photos will be up this evening
I got off to a decent start this month but caught a slight eye infection, didn't think I would get any more painting done and was about to throw the towel in but It's almost cleared up so gave painting up my entry this month another try again yesterday and today, depth perception was a wee bit off to say the least when I tried to paint last week. Hopefully I can tidy this guy up "a bit " and get him based today and photo's taken.
Syro_ wrote:@Ezki: Thanks so much Ezki To be honest, I'm jealous of your amazing painting skills.
Oh you're too kind.
Thanks for the extension Nev!
Managed to get Shadowheart somewhat done. There are a few things that I might return to later (like the base and hands), but for now I'm calling her done.
The main goal for this project was to practice NMM. I have done it dozen or so times for swords and such, but never to this extent. It was an intimidating and interesting challenge for sure.
Tried my very best and was about to lose my sanity here and there, but I had a lot of fun and that's the most important thing!
Luckily there were quite a few reference pictures of this character
Final pictures:
"Yes I'm a Gatekeeper and a Hater. I'm Also God's Favorite Princess and the Most Interesting Girl in the World" -Shadowheart.
Just managed to get the one guy painted up sadly, eyeballs need a rest
Lots of cool entries this month sweet terrain Captain Brown, like seeing homemade stuff, like your zombies XvArcanevX, hope I look that good when I'm dead, KidCthulhu
your cartoon strip always brings a smile to my face, cheers. To name a few.
Here are my final guys and as far as I got, still missing a few highlights and also very annoying lost one of the riders arms, no idea where it is as I've been traveling around with work a lot this month brining my stuff with me.
Some Tanith Scouts on Horses for Stealth operation rather than big loud vehicles, made sense to me.
I forgot how irritating my camo nid pattern is to actually execute. It’s the same contrast paints, but diluted with water and intestinally applied for a pathcy/mottled/marbled look. Which is a lot more work than the bang one coat on straight from the pot. And touchups require more effort.
This should be the last camo phobos Ultra for a while. I think I’ve got a spare one on sprue, but no space in a squad for him, so he can sit. I do have 10 of the new scouts incoming, the question is if they join the snow force, or stick with the woodland camo of the rest of their older brothers. But that’s a decision for later.
Just spent the whole day finishing one model and I'm only just finished. I'm too knackered mentally to set up my camera and take pics, is it okay if I do that tomorrow?
Proof of second model and proof of completed painting attached.

If the painting is done, we can forgive a little extra time for pics.
Heheh, yep, I'm probably going to be finding excuses to enter exodites for the next year or so! Either that or Raven Guard...
@Syro_ Superb work getting that painted up so quickly! Alpha Legion are my second 30k army after Raven Guard
Here's my entry, I ended up rushing a bit with Kelsya, didn't paint the gems or do the basing quite as well as I wanted, but overall I'm pretty happy with both. They're both converted models, Korvin much more extensively as Kelsya is basically just a headswap with an added knife. Korvin has bits from all sorts of different kits.
Edit: damn it, one of the images is wrong, let me fix it...
@Syro_ Superb work getting that painted up so quickly! Alpha Legion are my second 30k army after Raven Guard
Both great choices, Raven Guard and Alpha Legion are two of my favorites in the novels. That's my first on only Alpha, so I don't know if I can call him Alpha "Legion"
