Welcome all to the 108th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month the topic is: Out With the Old, In With the New -- Try new techniques, or break out whatever was bought/received as holiday gifts. Alternatively, dig deep in the pile of shame or the back of the painting station and tackle something that has been waiting for while. This can be more of a technical challenge, where the focus is on how you paint (trying something new) a/o meta (painting something actually new/old) or go more literal and paint a raw recruit a/o seasoned veteran. As always take inspiration from the topic and express it in you entry.

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of February and will end at midnight EST on February 29th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

If being stuck on the same bike for 10,000 years doesn't feel old (I guess you get used to it), 25 real-world years sure does - I'm too sentimental not to have ported over a bunch of parts, but it's definitely high time for an upgrade.

I'm going to paint the Naboo royal court, very much going with the In With The New part. I've had the box for less than a week. It's freshly assembled. It's the first Shatterpoint kit I built, and will be the first one I paint if all goes well. And I guess they're all child soldiers. So you know, it doesn't get much newer than that.

I would certainly like to paint all of them. We'll see if I have the time to finish them in a month. I'll start with the handmaidens and take it from there.

Going to try to get both these guys done. Old lib is one I kitbashed, mostly from the GK kit. He’s one of the 3 oldest guys currently in the primed pile. New lib is new from the Lev box. They will be replacing my old lead RT lib, who’s faithful service is threatened by scale creep, and probably needs a nap.

Hehhhh apparently I'm not going to be the only one that is going make some -bikers-..

"did you say bikers.. hume.. we ride the wind"

..yes well.. still on jetbikes ..aren't they?

"*laser pistol charging sounds*"

..
..

From old to new lends itself perfectly to make some -retro jetbikes- *ducks laser shot* supplemented with a farseer jetbike of more recent release.

Anyways.. here's my proof pic and my first Wip from what I did with em today.

I still have one of those old bikes on sprue I should do something with someday. They were fine for the time, but the new ones are so much better.

'ackshually' ..

I really liked the more bulgy feel and thick look of these old'uns over the farseer (will probably make it a warlock though.. even though the seer's helm looks better.. not sure yet.. I mean.. warlocks are better on a bike in an actual game I read, but will I ever play one? hm) bike..

I also got some shining-spears but wanna keep them for another time as they have those pesky flags.

p.s. to those that wondered.. these bikes and bikers will be Lugganath.

Mostly, on my phone.

Right, so, I'm going to try to tackle the new MCP core, the logic being these are updated sculpts and rules so fits the theme that way.

I'll do some, and maybe pick 5.

That looks like a metal model. How can you paint it to be no longer what it is? It’s already metal?! Does not compute…

Good luck!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The black base it came with was fine, but I had these in the bit box and though it be good fit.

I am sure there is a faster/better way to do this... A bit of time and blood went into trimming off the upper "terrain" features. Ended up with a longer slot.

After much deliberation, I decided on the newest model off the printer: Raziel from the Legacy of Kain series. I was never THAT into video games, but Soul Reaver remains a solid favorite. So out with the old, (everything else I own) and in with the new!

For this month, I figure what could be better than a new and improved version of a classic Warhammer unit. So I went with a unit of Tyranid Termagants from the Leviathan box set. Proof pic:

As always when I do a larger unit like this, I'll paint all of them and pick the five best ones to be my final entry. Good luck everyone!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

I think I will enter these 5 unfinished scratch-built ork killa kans. On the first page of my blog I have an army group shot from Feb 2016 that has these guys in them. No work or progress on them since, and the waiting time has not been kind to them.

Dem kans look happy to me.
I really enjoy seeing goofy Ork builds.

Anyway, I tried to cut off one of the heads to make it look to the side of one of the retro riders and frogged up.. cutting it too high but stopped just in time when I noticed so thankfully the head still look ok,.. will no longer try that.. It now just has two cuts to the helmet on its sides.. -_-
I'll paint some rust on it I guess. (Its a cut up rider to begin with to reposition the legs because I want him to be standing next to his bike like a smug tunnel snake)

Those old jetbike riders were solid chunks with no neck. I would not have tried a headswap/position myslef. Not a trivial job.

Because my precision knife is too thin and the neck was too thick, fearing it would break I tried it with the spruecutter.. thought I had it below the ridge of the helmet but when I pressed saw some of the detail on the helmet turn white ..knowing there it was not going to end well.. I took away the cutter and saw the cut was above the ridge (don't know how that happened..) and yelled "frog" (well, not frog, but something that sounds like it but isn't site-friendly) for the first time in a year or so during hobby hours.

I put on some basecoat black and it looked good enough not to notice but ok..

Neckless people shouldn't go near spruecutters.. :/ That's the lesson of the new year.

For that kind of work you probably want a jewler’s saw, with as small a kerf as you can get. Knives and clippers can only do so much.

Lots of texture in the pewter, don't know for nmm if it is a blessing or a curse.

This month's theme fits in with my goal for this year of getting through as much of my backlog as possible, while keeping purchases at a minimum. To this end, I'll start by working on some Usagi Yojimbo miniatures sent to me by a good friend more than twenty years ago, when I first came to Japan. I'll start with Miyamoto Usagi and is frienemy Gennosuke:

Now showing The Fellowship of the Ring, along with some Dreadball Captains!

Painting total as of 4/13/2024: 31 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

Intriguing entries already.
Also looking forward to see that Mothsniper's NTripleM when it's done!

As my entry this month, I'll try to paint a Bust of Triss Merigold from the Witcher universe, sculpted by the H3llcreator.

How it fits the theme then?
Well, first of all this is my very first bust, so it covers the "In With the New" part.
As for the "Out With the Old", those who are familiar with the story of the Witcher games (and/or made certain choices) might get it.

Apologies for the first layer of skin that I have already airbrushed.
Got too excited and forgot to take the picture before spraying. Hopefully it's fine, as it's only a single base coat

Toptip to self and everyone that feels adressed by the words -iyanden yellow-

Never paint yellow on black basecoating. I had to redo all parts I wanted to coat yellow with slightly pink dipped grey before --still having to make 4-5 layers of-- yellow painting it. eeeeeyyghghh1!!! *jumps into wall*

Now I still need to figure out how to make a proper tape-cut stencil to make a checkered pattern on it (after protective coating the parts ofcourse) because last time I did that with just a brush and the steadiness of a cat at a percussion competition I wasn't satisfied with the result.

Yellow is infamous for not covering well. Definitely worth putting down a white/off white base if you prime black.

I’ve done hazard stripes with painter’s tape, but never checks. Good luck.
