Welcome all to the 121st round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This month the topic is: Space Marine. Our annual start of the competition. They come in many sizes and types. Loyal, traitor, colorful or camoflaged, clean or weathered, dead or alive. And not just GW’s take. Any future soldier that does the job across the galaxy from LV-426 to Klendathu. Check your gear and get ready to drop, it’s time to exterminate species!
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of March and will end at midnight EST on March 31st. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
I've been meaning to see how I feel about assembling and painting Epic sized models for a while. I don't have a set goal beyond that. Hopefully I'll end up with five painted Rhinos by the end of the month, but I'll settle for less if I'm not thrilled painting super tiny stuff.
I have a couple of ideas. The first is Generations:
going from the earlist RT days up to the Space Marine Heroes blind box. My other idea has to wait until I have time to pull stuff from the Closet of Shame.
Because while every other chapter had to wait until the 2010s or whatever to fly the friendly skies, the Mentor Legion had had these in their garage so long they'd already made stained glass window art of them in the Rogue Trader days:
Not an exact match of course, but good enough; despite the visible wings between the fuselage and engines I've decided it's a Stormtalon because I think it looks cooler and I want to use the modelled cockpit. Consequently, unlike most models which I glue together completely and leave trying to get my paintbrush into the difficult-to-reach bits as a problem for future me, this one's being done in sub-assemblies - partly so I can get at the cockpit and pilot, partly so I can spray the main fuselage and cockpit module separately because I don't want to be trying to paint smooth white over dark green.
Not much conversion this time, although the pilot's got Primaris shoulder pads since the rest of the body's going to be mostly obscured anyway, and I've used a bare head so I can try that facepaint look Nisk Ran-Thawll's rocking.
Because while every other chapter had to wait until the 2010s or whatever to fly the friendly skies, the Mentor Legion had had these in their garage so long they'd already made stained glass window art of them in the Rogue Trader
They were known for testing out experimental gear, so it tracks that they were using them early.

No worries. We can have our own little mini-comp.
You guys are making it real hard not to scrap my plans and dig into the pile of shame. I know I’ve got more RTB01s, and plenty of 2nd bolter huggers. Probably a whole 3rd marine loose in the bits box and some 7th tacs, HH Mk 4 and 6 on spure, plus some intercessors. But by the time I excavate the PoS and get them built and primed, it would be some time in April.

Hey, don't be shy. Everyone is welcome in our little mini-comp! Besides, digging though the PoS is one of the most enjoyable parts of the hobby for old guys like us!
I was trying to decide what Marines to paint when I happened to be going through my Blackstone Fortress box and realised I need to paint the Plague Marines:

I'll go ahead and enter these guys:
These will help with my goal of finishing the Leviathan box set models, and they shouldn't be super difficult to paint. Contrast paint ftw!

Basic gunmetal metallic, Typhus corrosion technical and then dry brush with a bright orange. And yes, I’m very pleased with how such a simple method gives such a great result!
"Brother-Techmarine, how can it be that flight prep for our chapter's mighty Stormtalon requires this two-by-four to be shoved up my freckle?"
"It is not for us to question the wisdom of the Omnissiah, Brother-pilot."
Although I am out of dead Marines to place on bases...no more Eldar, Orks, Sisters, or Imperial Guard to paint.
So terrain it is. A second kit of three containers with crates and barrels.
Do you hear the painters sing?
Singing the song of angry artists
It is the music of the painters
Who will not paint marines again!
When the tapping of your brush
Echoes the beating of the jars
There is art about to start
When tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond those Space Marines
Are there other models you long to see?

Maybe I should paint some Eldar in your stead, then?
I've got a load of RT/2nd edition Fire Dragons I've been meaning to paint for ages, that I actually almost completed a couple of test models for last month. One of the schemes is in the style of (or a poor imitation of) Hendarion's old Fire Dragons, and I'm pretty pleased with it, even if it's not up to his standard.
Then again, I've still got a ton of Raven Guard yet to paint...
For those who are new to the challenge, we do have a protest group who likes to paint Eldar every year. We’ve not been able to stamp them out, so just need to accept them.
I can’t officially condone them, but if you don’t have marines to paint, and want to join the revolutionary faction, just be prepared to have to sing rebel anthems while you paint your space elfs.
I realise in retrospect that Din is not in the original primed shot, because he's technically part of the Certified Guild set. I'll leave him out if need be.

This is the way.
It’s all good. If you say he was primed at the start of the month, I’ll trust you.

I would mention that the term Space Marine covers more than just the Adeptus Astartes. Any futuristic warrior could work-- Colonial Marines from Aliens, Enforcers from Deadzone, any number of Infinity models. I even entered some Martians from Mars Attacks a couple of years ago.

I did try to cover that in the opening post:

But yes, anything space-y and/or marine-y is fair game. As with most topics, they are guidelines to inspire, not straight jackets to restrict. If you think it will cover your entry, it probably will. But try to get vaguely aligned with the topic.
This month is a little different as we have an established protest sub-category. Which if people were not aware pf they would wonder what was going on.
This guy has been laying around for a while now, think it's time to give him a lick of paint.
Captain Uriel Ventris
I bought this on ebay at some point last year, it didn't have original head but looking at the mini on GW site it only came with one head with no helm.
I think I will forgo attempting to paint another face at the moment and luckily found a decent looking safety hat that's suitable for a Captain, it's got a brush on top
I did browse through the little Eldar box of mini's that needs a little TLC and looking at the Autarch.... he doesn't need anything fixed....tempting
I did better than I expected. Only part I'm unhappy with in the back of the wings. I got the wings from a bug toy I bought at hobby lobby, and the back is untextured, so I had to freehand the veins, and I'm not good at freehanding.

The wings look pretty good. You might want to go over the veins with a thinner, lighter, more opaque line in the middle to help match them to the other side.
Nice plague marine Jademin, I'll need to grab some of that Typhus corrosion for trying out now.
Misclicking Orc: Looks good, I can't freehand either...maybe one day If I give up coffee, if your not happy with the veins maybe hazard chevrons would be more forgiving, but it might not fit the look your going for.

I’ll try that. Will post later.
POH, I can do hazard stripes, and hazard stripes on bug wings does sound funny, even if it’s not what I’m going for

at first I thought:"Ok - Space Marines - not my cup of tea - still got arround 1000 points of Orkarmy to paint and time is not expanding like the universe does....", but somehow I got an idea how I could squeeze in a Space Marine or two, without ruining my time table =)
So here are the starting pictures - Plan is to take those two perfect, but red S+Ms and kitbash them to one final ...."Surprise"... =)
P.S.: Hope it`s ok, that the two are no longer in service - seems the criteria for becoming a space marine have changed a bit over the years and they wouldn`t match the standards anymore size wise at least...
As we're halfway through the month, is it OK to fling out suggestions?
Off the top of my head:
From the Scrapheap: this could be an old abandoned project, a rescue or a kitbash of oddments. Alternatively, it could be something or someone who's been literally abandoned or forgotten, ancient history or otherwise from the past.
His Dark Angel mate gave him a hoodie which I think i prefer, its cold in space, it will help keep his ears warm.
Attempted to make his sword a little fancier last night with nice transition from dark blue to light blue but it wasn't happening , so I'm just keeping it neat and simple.
Great work everyone! Month is half over, keep it up.

It’s always OK to toss out ideas at any time, but I do try to remember to ask around the middle of the month.
I've been having really bad luck with my entries for the past few Dakka Challenges. It's like when I paint something that's not for a challenge, it looks significantly better.
I wanted to jump in this year with a protest model:
He's, um, not looking so good...
I know the model is still in the "ugly phase" with a lot of colors not highlighted yet. But it's still not giving me much encouragement...
Meanwhile, stuff for my Big Fantasy Epic comic comes out like this:
Maybe I'll be more encouraged after the next painting session with the Squat...
I feel you. I can't say I've been terribly unlucky with my challenge entries, not the least because it's pretty much all I paint these days, but I certainly get stuck in the ugly phase all too frequently. My Rhinos have been sitting at the finished basecoat stage for a week now:
I really have to get painting if I want to finish all five by the end of the month. Kind of not feeling it at the moment, though...
That reminds me, I have a draw full of rogue trader squats I was going to paint...
I think it looks great! I especially like your colour choices, very appropriate to the early 90s rogue trader/2nd edition aesthetic! I also like the additions you've made to the model, they work well. Love the old squats, I really must get round to painting them...
Here are all the Space Marines I painted this month. In the next day or two, I will pare it down and post my final entry photos. In the meantime, feel free to head over to my P&M blog for more photos.
It's been quite a while since I entered but I am trying to get back into the hobby...marriage fallen apart and single-parenting three kids but trying to find some time for myself!
Back in the 90s when I got into the hobby, the most 'Space Marine' image that lingers in my degrading memory is the OG Space Hulk.
The Blood Angels Terminators in tight, enclosed corridors still really push those nostalgia buttons...
..So, I am going to paint this guy (from Leviathan)....as my first entry in a long time. Look forward to seeing everyone's work!
My mini is still in the model cupboard, still wearing nothing but a coat of primer.
I’ve just not got it in me this month, I seem to have lost my ‘mojo’ a little for some reason. I think I just need a bit of a break. I’ll be here to vote for you all.

Would an extra day help? I can give you an extension.
It’s only a marine. You can speed-paint one drunk in a couple hours. Grab a brush and shake off those blahs!
Or not. Whatever you need to do to be happy. Cheers!
Uuugh, why do I struggle so much with lighting?! It also doesn't help that the model is black and white. It's a thin line between under and overexposure. My brother is hoping to start an Iron Hands army with ties to the Ademch, so I thought I'd paint up an IH marine with some martian colours. And I framed so he can hang it on his wall.
Speaking of procrastinating... I guess I'll enter this thing sooner or later.
Ship-based combatant? Check.
Trained to fight on land or at sea? Check.
Unhealthy obsession with his standard issue Ka-Bar knife? Check.
In Spaaaaaace? Check!

and here's a WIP:
He's basecoated by now, but there's still a whole lot of details, highlighting, and shading to be done in the next few days (plus the base!)
Nice entries so far everyone, and good luck to all like me who are still scrambling to get something across the finish line.

Kommandos are always a great choice, but I hope you can paint quickly. I'm curious to see what the base will look. Some kind of ship interior would sell the whole marines in space vibe.
Monochrome harlis are cool. And the only way I’d personally be able to paint them. I tried some different schemes back in the day, none worked well. Maybe someday I’ll try again.
Almost there!
Bases and decals left to do, but everyone is off the handles.
I had to downsize my entry due to many and varied commitments in the latter half of the month. On the bright side, as soon as I was no longer batch painting, I felt a whole lot better about it. Guess mass battle games aren't really for me.

Thanks for the offer Nev. I reckon it’s passed that point for me. Even if I did some slap chop approach I’d still probably not finish it up now. I’ll sit this one out and enjoy seeing the results and votes come in!
I've fully painted a grand total of one Fire Dragon. Four more aren't far behind, but I may have left it a bit late to get everything done on them (unless I go ham on them in the next couple of days). Still, I at least have one little guy that I'm very happy with, so he'll be entered whatever happens.
I had so many cool tempting ideasto paint for Space Marines this month, but I've been so busy and tired that nothing has even been started. I'll see if I can bang out this single head swapped Dark Angels sargent, this weekend.
Hi all, I'm away with work tomorrow so will get final pics up on the evening of the 1st April if that's ok.
Busy time with the house extension taking most of my focus atm. For this month I went for a minor conversion for a custom chapter Honour Guard, I've hidden most of the larger Ultramarines sigils but cant get rid of them all.
Knights Sanguine Space Marines Honour Guard
Just got to finish up the bases, swords, banner and gold highlights when I'm in the hotel tomorrow night
Tada - allmost finished - but that has to suffice - I don`t have time left...sry.
Here is my Space Ma...-wait a second. He has got to be somewhere arround here.
I swear I left him standing there for a second - primed, based, shadows with contrast paints, highlights and all.
Thought about joining the revolution with something from my two space elf armies (Eldar and Dark Eldar), but ended up painting a Pan Oceania Fusilier from the Infinity miniature game.
They are soldiers and they fight on various planets, therefore also in space. And I guess they could be marines as well. So I guess she's somewhat fitting for Space Marine!
Proof
I wanted to go with an alternate take on this one.
As the gamers among you might recognize, the color scheme is very much inspired by D'va from Overwatch, even though I took a lot of liberties (such as the pink metro camo).
I've never actually played the game nor know much about it, but I liked the colors of the character.
I wanted to portray this miniature as two different characters: a cosplayer from our day, cosplaying an alternate and dystopian version of D'va as a regular soldier from another universe.
The shading is done mostly by stippling, as I wanted to produce a bit rougher texture. This might represent foam / worbla or any other similar material from which the armour and weapon could have been made.
Also wanted to break the very smooth look of most Infinity models I've seen, even though it looks very fitting and cool most of the time!
Currently the base just a round display plinth. I'm thinking of creating a larger display base for it, but I'm not sure how to do it yet. Likely something representing a cosplay contest stage.
Anyway, I'm calling it done for now, as the idea needs a lot of refining. Plus I kinda like the clean look of the plinth!
Finished pictures.
I think I'm calling this "From another world".
A bonus scale comparison picture. A friend of mine suggested that I should start doing these every now and then.
I ended up having a lot less time than I thought this month but I managed to get in under the wire with this Titus! I had a blast painting this guy, and probably would have been too scared to attempt it without the challenge, so I'm glad I tried. I also got to practice a few techniques I've been afraid to attempt in the past like facial hair and freehand chapter symbols/letters, thanks in no small part to how obnoxious Ultramarine decals are on rounded shoulderpads.
Good luck to everyone else in the home stretch, the submissions I've seen so far are looking great!
P.s. I hope I uploaded the images correctly, last time I did them I was advised to upload them to my gallery and link them here, so please let me know if I should do something differently!
Small edit: I saw the deadline was extended slightly and I found some more time today, so I got a chance to fix a few of the things I wasn't super jazzed about and added a little weathering.
Congrats to everyone - a lot of really great work!
Anyhow, here is my terminator - straight-forward Blood Angel that reminds me of the original Space Hulk that got me into the hobby oh-so-many years ago. I forgot how much the photos 'wash out' the shading - I'll have to try be much more aggressive with it next month!
It feels good to have finished.
Good luck everyone!
From left to right: LE2 Imperial Space Marine (1985), Plastic 2nd Edition Marine (1993), 3rd Edition Tactical Squad (1998), Space Marine Heroes Series 1 (2017), Horus Heresy MKVI Marine (2023)
Heres my final pics, overall middle happy with how they turned out, I didn't want to/couldn't grind all the U symbols off the models so managed to cover the larger ones best I could, painting is ok could do with a few mnore details in areas and would have lights to spend more time on the blending the weapons, I tried marble effect on the base quite was again ok but not perfect. Just happy I got something done during a busy time in RL.
Didn't have as much time as I thought I would, so just got this marine up to tabletop standard for this month. Really must start these challenges earlier in the month
Paint scheme inspired by Hendarion (with slight alterations). I was only able to get two of the squad done, though I've got another eight in the same scheme pretty close to completion. Unfortunately, some of them are probably going to end up on ebay in the not too distant future, what with money being very tight at the moment...
Not the chap on the left, though. He's staying with me.
Well this is awkward. I've got my final pics but Dakka's gallery isn't cooperating for me to upload them at the moment. I don't know if the admins need to get out the big hammer and perform some percussive maintenance on the servers or what, but I have so far been unable to get my pics to upload.

I trust you finished on time. If you can’t get them up on Dakka we can work something out to get them online.
Everyone else in? Let’s call this closed. Get scrapping on April!
Okay, guess the site's working again, because here are the final pics of my Deathwing Terminators from the Leviathan box set:
Nothing like finishing at the last minute, eh, or having site issues nearly block one's upload. But I got them done, and I'm pretty happy with how they turned out overall, although they aren't super special. I had more fun working on these than some of my other recent entries, so I guess I'm getting some of my mojo back.

I’ve not forgotten it, just busy. Hopefully get it up tonight or Friday. If not sat.
