Progress on the Mk 5 helmet squad:

I realise in retrospect that Din is not in the original primed shot, because he's technically part of the Certified Guild set. I'll leave him out if need be.

This is the way.

That’s fine.

It’s all good. If you say he was primed at the start of the month, I’ll trust you.

Primed and in fact painted on the first of the month. I got overexcited. But he could do with a few touch ups still.

For those who are new to the challenge, we do have a protest group who likes to paint Eldar every year. We’ve not been able to stamp them out, so just need to accept them.

I can’t officially condone them, but if you don’t have marines to paint, and want to join the revolutionary faction, just be prepared to have to sing rebel anthems while you paint your space elfs.

I would mention that the term Space Marine covers more than just the Adeptus Astartes. Any futuristic warrior could work-- Colonial Marines from Aliens, Enforcers from Deadzone, any number of Infinity models. I even entered some Martians from Mars Attacks a couple of years ago.

Now showing various models from the previously adandoned projects!

Painting total as of 3429/2024: 56 plus a Deva King statue
Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

I did try to cover that in the opening post:
I wrote: This month the topic is: Space Marine. Our annual start of the competition. They come in many sizes and types. Loyal, traitor, colorful or camoflaged, clean or weathered, dead or alive. And not just GW’s take. Any future soldier that does the job across the galaxy from LV-426 to Klendathu. Check your gear and get ready to drop, it’s time to exterminate species!

But yes, anything space-y and/or marine-y is fair game. As with most topics, they are guidelines to inspire, not straight jackets to restrict. If you think it will cover your entry, it probably will. But try to get vaguely aligned with the topic.

This month is a little different as we have an established protest sub-category. Which if people were not aware pf they would wonder what was going on.

Another blue boy is joining the party.

This guy has been laying around for a while now, think it's time to give him a lick of paint.

Captain Uriel Ventris

I bought this on ebay at some point last year, it didn't have original head but looking at the mini on GW site it only came with one head with no helm.

I think I will forgo attempting to paint another face at the moment and luckily found a decent looking safety hat that's suitable for a Captain, it's got a brush on top

I did browse through the little Eldar box of mini's that needs a little TLC and looking at the Autarch.... he doesn't need anything fixed....tempting

I did better than I expected. Only part I'm unhappy with in the back of the wings. I got the wings from a bug toy I bought at hobby lobby, and the back is untextured, so I had to freehand the veins, and I'm not good at freehanding.

Making some progress. I still haven’t found my ideal Ultramarines painting recipe, but I’ve wrestled these into the right color to proceed.

The wings look pretty good. You might want to go over the veins with a thinner, lighter, more opaque line in the middle to help match them to the other side.

Looking good peeps.

Nice plague marine Jademin, I'll need to grab some of that Typhus corrosion for trying out now.

Misclicking Orc: Looks good, I can't freehand either...maybe one day If I give up coffee, if your not happy with the veins maybe hazard chevrons would be more forgiving, but it might not fit the look your going for.

I’ll try that. Will post later.

POH, I can do hazard stripes, and hazard stripes on bug wings does sound funny, even if it’s not what I’m going for

Maybe I should paint some Eldar in your stead, then?
I've got a load of RT/2nd edition Fire Dragons I've been meaning to paint for ages, that I actually almost completed a couple of test models for last month. One of the schemes is in the style of (or a poor imitation of) Hendarion's old Fire Dragons, and I'm pretty pleased with it, even if it's not up to his standard.

It is not just pointy eared degenerates in our ranks...anything you want to paint other than Marines is fine, just understand that you will only get a couple of votes.
BTW Nevelon, I have run out of elves to paint, to I present the barricades!

Ok,

at first I thought:"Ok - Space Marines - not my cup of tea - still got arround 1000 points of Orkarmy to paint and time is not expanding like the universe does....", but somehow I got an idea how I could squeeze in a Space Marine or two, without ruining my time table =)

So here are the starting pictures - Plan is to take those two perfect, but red S+Ms and kitbash them to one final ...."Surprise"... =)

P.S.: Hope it`s ok, that the two are no longer in service - seems the criteria for becoming a space marine have changed a bit over the years and they wouldn`t match the standards anymore size wise at least...

The topic is “space marine” not exclusively GW modern ones. Old OOP ones are fine. Heck, that’s some people’s entries every month!

Haven't fulled painted a model in over 2 years. Gonna work on Dante and see if I can get him done by the end of the month.

Mostly, on my phone.

As we're halfway through the month, is it OK to fling out suggestions?
Off the top of my head:

From the Scrapheap: this could be an old abandoned project, a rescue or a kitbash of oddments. Alternatively, it could be something or someone who's been literally abandoned or forgotten, ancient history or otherwise from the past.

Slowly making progress

His Dark Angel mate gave him a hoodie which I think i prefer, its cold in space, it will help keep his ears warm.

Attempted to make his sword a little fancier last night with nice transition from dark blue to light blue but it wasn't happening , so I'm just keeping it neat and simple.

It’s always OK to toss out ideas at any time, but I do try to remember to ask around the middle of the month.

I've been having really bad luck with my entries for the past few Dakka Challenges. It's like when I paint something that's not for a challenge, it looks significantly better.

I wanted to jump in this year with a protest model:

He's, um, not looking so good...

I know the model is still in the "ugly phase" with a lot of colors not highlighted yet. But it's still not giving me much encouragement...

Meanwhile, stuff for my Big Fantasy Epic comic comes out like this:

Maybe I'll be more encouraged after the next painting session with the Squat...

I feel you. I can't say I've been terribly unlucky with my challenge entries, not the least because it's pretty much all I paint these days, but I certainly get stuck in the ugly phase all too frequently. My Rhinos have been sitting at the finished basecoat stage for a week now:

I really have to get painting if I want to finish all five by the end of the month. Kind of not feeling it at the moment, though...
