Welcome all to the 122nd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This month the topic is: From the Scrapheap - This could be an old abandoned project, a rescue or a kitbash of oddments. Alternatively, it could be something or someone who's been literally abandoned or forgotten, ancient history or otherwise from the past.
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of April and will end at midnight EST on April 30th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Cast your minds back to September 1988, with this little snippet from the article introducing the original Land Raider kit:
...and that, so far as I've been able to determine, is the last and only time the Star Leopards chapter was ever mentioned. But from the scrapheap of history, Brother-Captain Fragman has returned, still shouting:
I decided to make it a twofer in resurrecting long-forgotten relics - since there's nothing in canon about what colours the Star Leopards wore, I'll be using one of my first edition Space Hulk Terminators as inspiration (and just ignoring the crude Dark Angels logo on the shoulder; I wasn't paying any attention to chapter colours back then, just whatever I thought would look cool).

This is what I'm intending to paint, an old RT/2nd edition eldar dreadnought, rescued from an ebay lot and stuck on a modern round base. It's going to be Saim Han (I think), because I'm building a 2nd edition army and Saim Han doesn't seem to be that popular online (or I can't find many pics, at least) for old school Eldar armies. Not going to go down the route of the really old RT faction schemes, with tiger stripes and polka dots and stuff, just a nice clean looking Saim Han army and lots of different aspect temples.
If I don't end up painting this dreadnought, I'll probably paint swooping hawks from the same era. I have a collection of them I bought back in the nineties, then sold in the 2000s, then rescued back from the person I sold them to recently. Hopefully that counts as being 'From the Scrapheap'.

I love this theme! One of the top models I was considering was this guy: https://www.warhammer.com/en-US/shop/empire-of-man-elementalist-and-familiar-2025?queryID=a2d02446bb03a9d1163bfbfc697efd5f
Since the model is very new (but comes from Old World so also "old" in the Warhammer timeline) I wasn't sure if it would be acceptable. Would this guy be okay?

Hi - ha - it seems like this month has the perfect theme for my orkarmy
- since everything they build is made out of things you can find on the Scrapheap.
I have several models that still need painting - I hope it is ok, if they allready have a green skinbase - I just wanted to remove them from the "gray pile of shame", so I allready painted every part of green skin with one layer....:
The Mech:
Big Mech with Snotzogga:
If that is allready too far ahead, I could also build and paint the Deff Dread - but I kind of wanted to paint something smaller this month, so I can concentrate more on details and effects
I also got the Meganobs - one with allready green skin, but there are 4 Models all in all and 3 are not even built yet...so maybe that would be fair and I would get some kind of kickstart for my hole army by adding 4 more Models...

Digging through the Drawer of Abandoned Projects, I came across some Skaven:
I got these, as well as about 20 others, in a trade several years back. Whatever the original owner used to paint them has proven impervious to both isopropyl alcohol and acetone-based nail polish remover. In fact, the only thing that takes the paint off is a wire brush. I'll strip off as much paint as I can and try to get them in shape for gaming. Naturally, I'll choose the best five for my entry.

I'm entering this model that I rescued from the used models bin at my FLGS:
When I picked up this Broodlord, it was in very rough shape. It was absolutely smothered in thick paint, and the colors of said paint were pretty strange too (like a small child was handed this model and a paintbrush along with some paints and just told to go nuts). The long tongue was also broken off of the model. Sadly I didn't think to take a picture of it in this condition, but it was rough. I stripped the paint and re-primed it in Grey Seer, and will paint it to match my other Tyranids. The tongue was replaced by a (sadly much smaller) tongue from a spare Genestealer head. This is going to be a satisfying and relatively easy paintjob, at least I hope it's easy.

Given that I'm the one who suggested it, I really should enter I might try to resurrect something from the shell of the pbc I found.
I also have some sort of primaris hover tank that the elder spawn abandoned long ago.
Plans for April are otherwise very much terrain focused. These are rescue failed prints from a mate that I plan to salvage:
A 3d printed Trench system, and a vaguely sith temple.
Side details didn't print, so that will need a bit of work. Any and all would suit.

I'm in with this lad. I feel like with the theme "From da Scrapheap" that as an ork player I should be taking on something more ambitious, but RL has been sapping my hobby time and motivation in a major way lately. So finishing one mini a month and getting this next squad of kommandos done slowly but surely is the priority these days. Ork rokkit launchas always look cobbled together from scrap to me so I figure he fits the theme at least.

Perhaps using either a vine/Ivy or some tufts or similar to add pops of color? My Iyanden have black templar contrast bases, drybrushed a lighter grey (which pops against the yellow and blue of Iyanden) but I added fuscia pink tufts and suddenly the whole model pops more. You could literally use green stuff and just dry brush it when done (rough idea, haven't done it that way before but it is already green...)

Gladiator turret progress too - I finished the turret as it's all black so I went ahead and just did the highlighting same as the Redemptor. Took more time to work on the heat effect on the melta gun and lascannons. Turret by itself then on the tank.

Still need to get some base work on these guys, but making gangbuster progress. Ignore the vampire, she got a couple days of a head start and is not for the comp. Next up is to get the bland and blood knights done. Half a month to go, but the blood knights need to go one at a time on the monster handle, and knights in general take a lot more time then footsloggers.
Top 5 will make the final cut.

I haven't actually painted anything on my painting station in many years-- every square cm is covered with paints, supplies, or WIP models. I do all my hobby work on the dining room table.
WIP of the ogre:
You can see another copy of the same model in the background. I painted him with TMM, and will use him as reference for the lighting on the newer model. Also, my go-to NMM steel recipe is really close to the blue skin, so I'll probably start over with bronze.

I actually finished my entry a week ago, but I just now got around to dragging out the lightbox for some beauty shots. Here are my final pics of the rescued Tyranid Broodlord:
Painting this model was very satisfying on multiple levels. As I think I said before, I picked it up from the used models bin at my FLGS, and it was in VERY rough shape. The model's tongue was broken off, and it was absolutely caked in very thick paint, and in random colors on different parts of the model too. I really wish I hadn't forgotten to take a "before" picture, as it really was dire. I stripped it in a bath of Isopropyl Alcohol and then scrubbed it with an old toothbrush, and fortunately that thick paint came right off. I was then able to source a replacement tongue from a spare Genestealer head, and while it's certainly smaller than the tongue the model is supposed to have it does the job okay. Once I gave the model a coat of Grey Seer primer it was ready to go, and the final painting results speak for themselves I think. Contrast paint is perfect for Tyranids! I'm very happy with how it turned out, and it was nice to rescue this model and give it a new lease on life. Hopefully it will bring me some success on the tabletop when it leads my Genestealers into combat.

I think a similar finish could be achieved with a sponge that was going to be my Plan B.

In Austria the 1st of may is free of work and I really couldn`t get a lot done this month so far - I still need to do all the light effects...

So here is the pick-5 of what I’ve been up to this month. Crazy productive month. Way back in the day I had an Undead army. Before the split to Vampire Counts and Tomb Kings. I’ve dabbled a little in painting newer models, mostly from the AoS Soul Wars box. Nighthaunt are cool, but my preferred flavor of death is dusty bones and vampiric blood. So from the scrapyard of history, they rise once more. Tattered banners and rusted armor, marching again to war eternal.
Here is the lot of what I’ve managed. The Vampire on foot got a couple day head start on the month, but included here for completeness.
Next up will be the Soulblight launch box, starting with some grave guard. We’ll see how much ends up in the comp. But some of it I want to fast-track to get to the table, and none fits next month, so we’ll see...

Loving the snotling pump wagon.
For this challenge I knew I would be pushed for time as I'm mainly focused on my house extension at the moment so I thought I would raid the scrapheap that can be ebay and found quite a suitable model that I could work with
Proof
Which has now turned into this Ork Scrap Tank, I wanted to go for a very rusty look to suit the scrap theme. I link the results and was happy I managed to get it painted to a decent level and finished Photos on time for once .
Good Luck everyone

We Blood Axes is da best clan. 'Cause we trade wiv da uvver clans, so we gets all da best scrap orky know wotz has to offer. Take dese rokkits for example. If I wants ta hit somefin' dead 'ard wiv no mukkin' about, I use dis Goff rokkit. If da target is extra fast and might dodge my shot, I hit 'em wiv dis red one from da Sunz. If ya might miss, and ya gotsta get real lucky, use da blue rokkit from da Skullz. And if you want yer shot ta be real flash and show 'em who's boss, den dis 'ere Bad Moonz rokkit is da one fer da job.
From da Scrapheap, I present Patches, a Blood Axe Kommando Rokkit Boy:
I even made it in under the deadline (for us West Coasters, at least). Great entries so far, and good luck to all who are still trying to finish!

Not going to enter anything this month. I've been struggling with a general malaise, both for painting, and in general for everything going on in the world at the moment. I'll vote as normal, of course. Good luck everyone!

@Pursuit of Happiness: Dumb question, but how did you get the red tint on the canopy? It looks really cool!

ZergSmasher - I used AK 3rd gen clear red, two or three coats. I was going to try blood angels contrast paint if the AK stuff didn't work I think it might have the same effect if you have any.
