Welcome all to the 122nd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month the topic is: From the Scrapheap - This could be an old abandoned project, a rescue or a kitbash of oddments. Alternatively, it could be something or someone who's been literally abandoned or forgotten, ancient history or otherwise from the past.

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of April and will end at midnight EST on April 30th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Cast your minds back to September 1988, with this little snippet from the article introducing the original Land Raider kit:

...and that, so far as I've been able to determine, is the last and only time the Star Leopards chapter was ever mentioned. But from the scrapheap of history, Brother-Captain Fragman has returned, still shouting:

I decided to make it a twofer in resurrecting long-forgotten relics - since there's nothing in canon about what colours the Star Leopards wore, I'll be using one of my first edition Space Hulk Terminators as inspiration (and just ignoring the crude Dark Angels logo on the shoulder; I wasn't paying any attention to chapter colours back then, just whatever I thought would look cool).

From the scrapyard of 5/6th WHFB, and the battlefields of the New World, the dead rise again!

Going to get my old vampire counts army out of history amd back to the table. We’ll see how much I can get done in a month, I’ll pick the best 5.

This is what I'm intending to paint, an old RT/2nd edition eldar dreadnought, rescued from an ebay lot and stuck on a modern round base. It's going to be Saim Han (I think), because I'm building a 2nd edition army and Saim Han doesn't seem to be that popular online (or I can't find many pics, at least) for old school Eldar armies. Not going to go down the route of the really old RT faction schemes, with tiger stripes and polka dots and stuff, just a nice clean looking Saim Han army and lots of different aspect temples.

If I don't end up painting this dreadnought, I'll probably paint swooping hawks from the same era. I have a collection of them I bought back in the nineties, then sold in the 2000s, then rescued back from the person I sold them to recently. Hopefully that counts as being 'From the Scrapheap'.

After reading it I also was hoping for the Eldar Land Raider.

I will enter with Boomdakka Snazzwagon I was planning to build at a "surprise" competition.

I love this theme! One of the top models I was considering was this guy: https://www.warhammer.com/en-US/shop/empire-of-man-elementalist-and-familiar-2025?queryID=a2d02446bb03a9d1163bfbfc697efd5f

Since the model is very new (but comes from Old World so also "old" in the Warhammer timeline) I wasn't sure if it would be acceptable. Would this guy be okay?

Anything Old World should be fine.

A scrap heap from my scrap heap! It's taken five years, but I have one piece left. Hopefully when I'm done I can take some nice action shots.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Hi - ha - it seems like this month has the perfect theme for my orkarmy
- since everything they build is made out of things you can find on the Scrapheap.

I have several models that still need painting - I hope it is ok, if they allready have a green skinbase - I just wanted to remove them from the "gray pile of shame", so I allready painted every part of green skin with one layer....:
The Mech:

Big Mech with Snotzogga:

If that is allready too far ahead, I could also build and paint the Deff Dread - but I kind of wanted to paint something smaller this month, so I can concentrate more on details and effects

I also got the Meganobs - one with allready green skin, but there are 4 Models all in all and 3 are not even built yet...so maybe that would be fair and I would get some kind of kickstart for my hole army by adding 4 more Models...

That’s close enough to base. You are fine.

Going to have to figure out what to do for this. So many potential choices, and it allows me to break out of the bretonnian blocks of infantry and knights.

Digging through the Drawer of Abandoned Projects, I came across some Skaven:

I got these, as well as about 20 others, in a trade several years back. Whatever the original owner used to paint them has proven impervious to both isopropyl alcohol and acetone-based nail polish remover. In fact, the only thing that takes the paint off is a wire brush. I'll strip off as much paint as I can and try to get them in shape for gaming. Naturally, I'll choose the best five for my entry.

Now showing various models from the previously adandoned projects!

Painting total as of 3429/2024: 56 plus a Deva King statue
Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

Going to do some Eldar terrain out of old bit and bobs that would have been recycled or trashed.

Been looking for an opportunity to paint this gent! I was going to try an old hive tyrant but I can’t find all the bits. If I can I may swap.

A Protoss colony world

I'm entering this model that I rescued from the used models bin at my FLGS:

When I picked up this Broodlord, it was in very rough shape. It was absolutely smothered in thick paint, and the colors of said paint were pretty strange too (like a small child was handed this model and a paintbrush along with some paints and just told to go nuts). The long tongue was also broken off of the model. Sadly I didn't think to take a picture of it in this condition, but it was rough. I stripped the paint and re-primed it in Grey Seer, and will paint it to match my other Tyranids. The tongue was replaced by a (sadly much smaller) tongue from a spare Genestealer head. This is going to be a satisfying and relatively easy paintjob, at least I hope it's easy.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 21 | Current main painting project: Warhammer 40k Leviathan set

OK, as an ode to Ironhands.com (a member of Dakka) who does some of the best scratch built Eldar terrain I have ever seen.

A tower made from scraps and bits.

Not really happy with the pins in the top layer...so I may take them out and try something else (ideas welcome).
Also, if anyone has large Tropicana lids...always looking to by more.

Cheers,

CB

The upper deck needs something railing like?

The tacks en mass I think are too many. Maybe pull 3/4ths of them an connect them with rope/chain? Or sculpt a railing connecting them?

They could also use a gem/topper/flower pot of some sort.

Just ideas…

This month's theme is a good excuse to paint Chopper. He's an outdated droid model who was rescued from a crashed Y-Wing and ended up with mismatched legs.

Mostly, on my phone.

Everyone's FAVE war criminal!

Given that I'm the one who suggested it, I really should enter I might try to resurrect something from the shell of the pbc I found.

I also have some sort of primaris hover tank that the elder spawn abandoned long ago.

Plans for April are otherwise very much terrain focused. These are rescue failed prints from a mate that I plan to salvage:

A 3d printed Trench system, and a vaguely sith temple.

Side details didn't print, so that will need a bit of work. Any and all would suit.

It's been a while since I painted something and this Ogre musician has been a WIP for ages.
Still need to add some chains to the drum.
I remember having a lot of fun creating this conversion, envisioning him walking around as if he's a member of a marching band!

First 5 skellies almost there. I want to pick up a black contrast paint to hit their shields with (not that you can see from this angle) and they need to be based. Wight King needs his golds warmed up, then a dunk in the Nuln Oil. He’ll get a round of highlights after that, which the poor fooslogers don’t get.

Was rummaging through the stash looking for something else and found these fellows tucked away. An old ebay win that have been partly stripped but still need a bit of a clean up before painting. Also just realised that they're over the model count but will deal with that later.
