A Protoss colony world

I actually finished my entry a week ago, but I just now got around to dragging out the lightbox for some beauty shots. Here are my final pics of the rescued Tyranid Broodlord:

Painting this model was very satisfying on multiple levels. As I think I said before, I picked it up from the used models bin at my FLGS, and it was in VERY rough shape. The model's tongue was broken off, and it was absolutely caked in very thick paint, and in random colors on different parts of the model too. I really wish I hadn't forgotten to take a "before" picture, as it really was dire. I stripped it in a bath of Isopropyl Alcohol and then scrubbed it with an old toothbrush, and fortunately that thick paint came right off. I was then able to source a replacement tongue from a spare Genestealer head, and while it's certainly smaller than the tongue the model is supposed to have it does the job okay. Once I gave the model a coat of Grey Seer primer it was ready to go, and the final painting results speak for themselves I think. Contrast paint is perfect for Tyranids! I'm very happy with how it turned out, and it was nice to rescue this model and give it a new lease on life. Hopefully it will bring me some success on the tabletop when it leads my Genestealers into combat.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 21 | Current main painting project: Warhammer 40k Leviathan set

Like all the scratch built stuff going on

Managed to get some work done on the jetfighter - It had some weird marks on it, just different shade of black nothing overly noticeable, I thought it might be grease or oil. Tried given it a wash it but didn't help so gave it a quick prime.

I found a youtube video with marble effect tutorial and decided I would give a try..... turned out ok for first attempt, maybe could do with a little more white though.

Very nice marble there. How hard was it to do?

It needs more teeth. But like incisors and molars like a human.

Cheers, it was fairly easy. I used those baby wipes stretched out....this was the most difficult part due to me not realizing it works 100 times better when they are dry, it's easy to stretch without ripping big holes in them

Then just airbrushed gold and white over the top with a few layers till I thought it looked ok and then finished of with aethermatic blue contrast

I think a similar finish could be achieved with a sponge that was going to be my Plan B.

Link to the tutorial I used https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-04RHY2xY0

Managed to get the other wing done this afternoon...didn't notice I missed a line with masking tape but never mind.

Ugh, I may have to change my entry. But at least the model in question has been on my scrapheap for about 10 years. Photo to come:

Huzzah, finished 2/3 of the remaining motor pool for my Black Templars. Really happy with the alternate color scheme here. Was surprisingly straightforward to accomplish.

Made some decent progress on basecoating the plaguebearers ahead of the bank holiday weekend. Using contrast paint on something that is 90% skin feels a bit like cheating but all is fair in the grim darkness of the far future, right?

I’m going to jump in with these old old AD&D dwarfs from the year I was born.

They’ve languished in the scrap heap of hobby life for long enough. Time for some paint and tabletop action.

They’re TSR 1983 skinny dwarfs with detachable weapons. Slightly wonky classically hand sculpted style with loads of character. And they’re all now painted 42 years later in time for maybe their first game ever this afternoon facing off against the Tomb Kings.

Two thirds of the month are over. Basecoats are down but real painting has yet to begin. I guess I'd better get started...

Last minute substitution since I'm still struggling on what gear to give Inquisitor Gabs:

I got this guy like a decade ago on eBay and lost his arm down the drain while stripping the old paint job. He's had the powerfist ever since but I never got around to painting him because my Brood Brother army is on hiatus. However, he makes a perfect Inquisitor henchman and that seems to be the only thing I can manage to paint that's not fantasy/medieval these days

Finished!

It feels nice to actually have some painted terrain. It was pretty easy as well with a sponging technique. I was able to slop a bunch of browns and oranges until it looked properly rusted. Pretty useful for these bigger pieces in the future. I might buy some cheaper paints though.

I'll have a proper back drop for all of my epic tabletop battles!

I'm liking the check pattern on the marine.

I pulled a bunch of models out of the alcohol, and have finished most of them, but my favorite is this guy:
