Picked up Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky on steam since it was half off and looked vaguely interesting. I guess it was big in Japan or something, but this is the first time it's been in english. Some kind of J/RPG updated for the PC. So far it's been pretty bland but a lot of them start out that way, hopefully picks up soon.

One thing I'll say for i t though, it plays really well on the tablet. After discovering RMB is equivalent to back or cancel, the only thing I've found that you may want the keyboard for is scrolling the camera around to check for treasure or monsters somewhat out of view. Probably still want to keep the keyboard within reach, but certainly the game seems playable while my Chi is off it's dock. Of course, being a game, the computer burns itself at both ends to run the thing and it sucks the battery down meaning I'll be tethered by the power supply fairly often. But that's just how it goes, FFT:WOTL destroys my phone's battery in a couple-three hours when I could listen to pandora on it all day.

Aside from still playing FO4, I've been playing FO: Shelter.... And I'm noticing one extremely annoying trait that my people seem to have.

Whenever there's an attack, infestation, etc. They all bunch up in their room, making it impossible for me to heal ONE fething person, so that If I have the Objective of "Clear X with no casualties" I basically can't do it

Still playing Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. I'm still waiting for the ball to drop. Or the other shoe. Or something. Anything. I dunno if I've ever had an RPG run this, i dunno, mundane for so long. I mean normally you start in the little small town and then some kind of crap hits the fan and suddenly you're part of the army/resistance, or everything is on fire because dragons, or some damn thing has gone awry. I mean, I know I'm still only 6ish hours in, or maybe 8..I forget.. but all I've really done is some pedestrian quests for my Guild of people that help people for money. I mean it's the guild that handles Justice, diplomatic relations, bodyguarding, and running errands. They do everything. The most exciting thing so far is tracking down some thieves from a robbery. I'm still waiting for an army to invade or some ancient evil to awaken... or hell some kind of machine to send me to another continent...something.

I mean... it may almost be refreshing if the plot builds more slowly yet still escalates, but without something so grandiose as usually happens. I know something is coming, it has to be, but until then it's a little slow.

That it runs well on the tabtop while it's just the top tablet half helps quite a bit.

Played as Denmark against the soviet union in Wargame: Red Dragon. Lost a bunch of times and when I finally did win (not sure if the difficulty was still on very hard) the game crashes. I guesses even when Denmark wins in the games the computer refuses to accept the improbability of Denmark beating the soviet union. Jeez as if it wasn't hard enough playing against a decent army as Denmark in that game. It was only the Red Forces starter deck but it was still reasonably hard.

I did find out a new awesome tactic though. Stun the enemy with artillery or anything and then hit them with cluster bomb aircraft. It's not the best thing true but it did snag a ton of kills. I just wish I could've seen some of those kill streaks to admire my work and see how well everything really did.

So, Final Fantasy. So far I've travelled around a lot, killed a lot of animals, done the usual lazy NPC "I need you to take these five crates of rocks I just bought and deliver them to the next town over" BS, done some investigative work and I've learned how to do a Riverdance by a band of pirates:

Spoiler:

I think afterwards one of the pirates had the everliving gak flogged out of him for stealing booze.

Right now I'm working towards getting a Chocobo of my own, a room at our guild house and a fat hatchling pet.

I got bored of Banished not because it wasn't fun, but because it's a game where you don't win, you just delay losing. I felt that the only way I would ever 'win' the game is if I stopped playing when I reached a point that I was happy with how my settlement was. I've no reason to go back to it.

Pure city builders? I suppose not.
Like, Civ has the whole 'conquer the world' thing for it.

But then, 'the sims' type games don't have a win state either.

They're usually a lot harder to completely screw up by accident. Something like Cities: Skyline doesn't have a 'win' state, but you almost have to be actively trying to screw yourself over in order to reach a point where you can't recover, and there are many points where you have a 'successful' city that will not fail. Banished tends to be rather heavy-handed when it comes to punishing mistakes, and they're not usually things you can rectify without starting again or loading up a previous save. Add in the fact that sheer luck can ruin your settlements because the game felt like it, and it feels much more like you're fighting an inevitable loss, whereas a game like Cities feels much more like you're capable of creating a stable, self-sufficient city.

One other negative about Banished is that you will eventually run out of stone, metal, and coal. Unlike trees, stone and metal don't replenish in the open (for obvious reasons). And mines and quarries only have a limited quantity of material.

Fallout 4
Subnautica
Banished
NHL 16, surprisingly.

I'm having a bit of problems with progressing on Subnautica. I can't find the materials I'm looking for, but a quick Google search will fix that, I'm sure. I am pleased to note that it isn't permadeath, like I assumed it'd be.

Having a hand at the Elder Scrolls Online. I'm trying to get some particular crafting ingredients which only drop in group dungeons. I ran through the same dungeon four times as a Tank no bother, but damn, the fifth...

In EOS when group finding you mark down your expertise: DPS/ Healer/ Tank, but can chose more than one at a time. I'm a Tank, and just a Tank. Someone else however was a DPS/ Tank. OK, no problem, that guy just switches to DPS. ...At least you'd think that. Instead its the painful situation of two tanks having bosses drawn back and forth between each other - with the bonus being that the party doesn't have the DPS to kill the bosses quickly. This went on for almost an hour in a dungeon which should only take twenty minutes (in a game where only the group leader can kick other players).

Hah, at which point I translate the chat logs and find out the other guy was swearing at me in German the whole time. XD

Well, I'm undergoing some Clash of Drama. To spare the details, I'm in Clan A, and Clan B is having a very bad run with Clan Wars. Both clans feature close friends, so that's why I care, mind you. Clan B had a mass migration to Clan A, only to slowly head back, one by one, or to join the newly formed Clan C. Overall, the movement was pointless, as everyone is going back to the original clans, and will still have the same problems, so nothing got solved.

I know, high school life is so hard. /sarcasm.

Unless you join a group outside a dungeon they level to V16. All players levels to that as well, but without champion points/ skill morphs/ armour set bonuses. What that means is that someone with veteran ranks will be superior to someone without. Whilst in the regular dungeons this may not be so much of a liability, I wouldn't recommend queuing for Veteran dungeons until you have some veteran ranks. ...And even then, for the sake of having decent DPS, only if you have maybe a dozen ranks.

Whilst DPS is the big concern, secondary comes the odd instance where players go into dungeons without soul gems. Lower leveled players are useful for resurrecting the higher level ones to free up the others, but I guess many don't use the auction house much to pick up cheap gems. Though this seems to be an issue at all levels, which is a real pain when you're the guy who's the only one ressing people. The alternative however is having people resurrect themselves at a wayshrine, which is a terrible idea it takes them back to the start of the dungeon (a dumb mechanic). ...Try doing that when you're at the top of the Imperial Palace when the shrine's all the back in the sewers. :(

As for PVP. Yuck. Good when you're in a large group, but you're screwed all to quickly once you're singled out. There's not much you can do when you're a Vet 12 going up against a Vet 16 as the leveling isn't flat. Its better than it was with Champion Points at least (where's that video of one guy soloing Molag Bal - a 10+ Vet Boss), but you can still put the points in to have silly multipliers and crit chances (which make putting points into resistance a bit moot given their DPS).

Yeah, I really like Chivalry. Something about the combination of the almost Monty Python-esque violence and a surprisingly complex combat system I find very fun. That said, I only downloaded the offline demo, not the online money, so it didn't cost me anything... I might pay the £12 or so it's going for on Xbox, but I wouldn't pay a full game price for it.

Prepping another army for my second attack... I'm hoping for 2 stars on this one... I'll be using my iPad instead of my iPhone this time... not sure why I didn't think of that for the first attack.

Fallout 4 after recovering from having my 670 card melt down.

Concentrating on making Sanctuary a bigger settlement than Diamond City and making Mirelurk's heads explode with my non-legendary 50 Cal silenced recon sniper rifle.

Must plant more Mutfuit, make more adhesive, and work on giving my settlers more recreational activities. My pool table only has one cue, the cue ball, 2 ball, and 8 ball. I think I'm missing some!

Going to re-arrange my home in Sanctuary - "Twopenny Tower" - so that all the beds for the settlers are not on the ground floor [I have two empty floors after all] and adding the lounge area to the floor with the pool table will enable me to get around another 40 beds in. That will give me a capacity for 80 settlers in the one building, with the possibility of putting up another 2 similar buildings on the site providing I don't run out of ground to grow food in.

Then I might actually give in to Preston's whining and go take back the Castle to use as my military base in the area.

I love the ME3 multiplayer personally. Maybe it's my preference of co-op over PVP, but I love how anyone can wind up being the hero of the match, simply because the person had that one medkit, or managed to survive the wave that everyone died in. I'd play Drell Vanguard and abuse biotic charge to rapidly get to a fallen team member's position.

Yeah, it's something that EA actually got right with multiplayer. - The multiplayer DLC has always been free. They must have made enough money from people buying the random upgrade packs that it was worth their effort providing more content (and therefore more things for people to buy).

My main character was an infiltrator, I was just checking the game, seems I've prestiged the class 9 times. I've got an adept, soldier and engineer at 5 times as well.

Truth be told, I wouldn't mind getting in to playing it again, it was fun.

Grinding my way through WoW on my Orc warrior. I'm going to try to leave my Alts alone until I get this one a garrison... Only 31 more levels to go.

I should actually probably still buy that while there's still a steam sale.

Keep in mind that its pretty glitchy.

So far seems fine. Oddly enough I haven't had the interest to play it consistently. I'm going between 'shadowrun returns: hong kong', Wargame: Red Dragon and maybe xenonauts.

Really at this point I'm waiting for xcom 2. Sadly it releases when I have to go away on a trip to see my archie bunker-esque father (think an offensive and mean old timey father/grandfather), bossy sister and said sister's metrosexual and submissive boyfriend (he's submissive to her at least). Can't even believe i'll be spending 200 dollars to do this. It's his 80th birthday though (yeah he's super old) so I gotta celebrate as we don't know how long he'll be around.

Anyway point being is I'd much rather be playing xcom 2 when I'm on that trip. I could barely stand all 3 of them at once with me for a week or two last time. I seriously wish there was something I could take that just elevates my mood a lot while with them but I'm guessing it'd be illegal.

Pretty close to finishing shadow run Hong Kong at this point. Would love a big budget shadow run rpg with more branching paths an exploration.

By glitchy what I mean is sometimes conversations back in the main hub reset. For me there was a point where a girl I had been talking to before a mission acted like she never spoke to me before so there was an introduction to her again that was different to the first one. It was quite frustrating. Same thing happened with the three guys who talk about dreams.

I'm still getting used to the re-vamped matrix. My god it's so weird now. Memorizing patterns for going through those stupid observer/spotter IC though if you get seen by one everything stops till the next turn so you can just walk out of the areas they can spot you in and walk through the maze of guard IC. It takes a move or two to do but it's very much worth it and you can still kill the original spotter IC without it alerting more.

I don't think it was glitchy. I think at least when you're introduced to the main city hub all the people that notice you won't talk to you because you're an outsider or foreigner until the Asian boss lady gives the go ahead.

Of all the games I could play xcom 2 is super high on the list. Wishing I could play fallout 4 as well but for the moment xcom 2 is much higher on the list.

So, I keep rolling new alts every now and then, but it's difficult to make them last. It feels like I've played everything.

Everything that's worth playing, anyway. Alliance go home.

If it wasn't for RP I'd have quit WoW long ago.

As it is? Worth staying even in the WoD content drought. Aside from my eternal DK main, my PvP mage has also received some attention.

Just finished my most recent run through of FFT, this time playing it on android as FFT:WoTL. Nice port/update, the story was a bit easier to comprehend in its better translated/localized format, and some of the new stuff was neat. Basically made a bee-line for the end after unlocking Dark Knight for the MC Ramza, and then leveling back down to the appropriate level for the next mission. The new special character Balthier (sky pirate from ff...12? set in the same setting but much different time) is immensely over powered but even without him the game is only so challenging. Fun times though.

I was also excited to see that all of the multiplayer arena/rendezvous/whatever items you could only get on the PSP version by playing with a friend... were all awarded to me posthumously(so what if it's not exactly the proper usage ) for beating the game. Now I can just walk into the poachers den on... I believe *any* save I have for the game, so long as it's at chapter 3 to have poachers dens unlocked... and I can pick up all of the horrendously overpowered goodies they gave people as rewards for multiplayer and so on. There are still a couple of items without multiplayer analogs I could get from the deep dungeon (think they renamed that...) but anyway, neat stuff. Fiendishly overpowered, but then again any well-built party is already that, even before powerful gear is added.

Good stuff. Adds even more replay value to something that I was already pretty keen to replay. Now it's just a matter of do I max out my current party while collecting every little side quest I bypassed on my rush for the exit (cloud, human form reis, big dungeon, etc) or start over and play with the special npcs instead of my generics...

Also, Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is still being fun. Still working marvelously on my tablet, I don't even bring the keyboard along any more.. most of the time. Still very... mundane. I guess I'm just used to a lot of world shattering events in my RPGs but so far there's been a lot of errands, skirmishes with bandits, run ins with prejudiced military commanders, orphan pick pockets, staying at several hotels and inns, and otherwise touring the countryside as the two main characters attempt to become promoted from junior to senior Bracers (goody goody slash mercenary guild). Still, entertaining, though I wish they'd let me keep four party members all the time rather than dumping me back to two occasionally. Two can run into logistical problems like... being outnumbered and unable to keep up with healing

Playing waaaaaay too much Fallout 4.

I'm doing the same thing I did in Skyrim, which is start completing side dungeons until I realize I can't complete them til I get a side quest from somewhere I haven't been yet cause I haven't really touched the main storyline.

Being sneaky seems less effective then I remember.

@Toasteroven yeah I kind of like it myself. It almost feels like... I dunno... like something more along the lines of Pokemon than final fantasy/breath of fire/whatever else. Without monster farming... just like... the nature of the jobs and interactions. It makes the name Legend of Heroes a little misleading (that kind of name makes me think more along the lines of epic high fantasy anime type stuff), but it's still a solid and fun little game.

This is one of the reasons why Summoners are appreciated in groups in FFXIV. They're the only dps job that has a raise spell (which is because they share their base class - Arcanist - with Scholar, which *is* a healing job). Couple that with the "your next spell is insta-cast" ability that Thaumaturges loan out to other classes and jobs, and you can get someone back up on their feet pretty quickly.

Did a Civ match with friends before trying out CS:GO. To be honest, it isn't really my type of game. The shooting seems to be more based on luck with who can get a head shot sooner. That, with a pretty poor community make me believe I won't be playing much of it, if at all.

Yeah, the main point of fetch quests is that they're usually generic filler quests that serve no visible point at all.

Go find X and give him a package. Come back with it when you're done. What was the package for? Who knows, certainly nothing to advance even a sub-plot.

TW3 had a few quests where you did fetching, but as far I can remember the ones I did all had a point, and actually went towards something tangible. The lack of fetch quests compared with every other RPG out there is one of the better points in TW3's favour.

For anyone experienced in building PCs...

Installing a new CPU fan in my pc. Unfortunately I was a bit clumsy and put fingerprints over the thermal paste covering the fan heatsink (not the CPU itself of). Will it be ok , or is it now contaminated and need to be cleaned?

Also... I started panicking thinking I bought a fan designed only for Intel sockets (which doesn't fit my motherboard)...then turned the instruction sheet over and realised its supposed to fit onto the stock amd brackets that came with the motherboard...which I'd just removed.

Heh, never mind. Damn thing fell over and picked up a load of dirt from my bed so I'm cleaning it anyway. Damn, I'm not off to a good start...

You know what, there's probably a good premise for a web comedy series.

"PC building with neebs".

Wish me luck.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Uh. This thermal paste is making me nauseus.

Unfortunately the only possible orientation for my fan is to point it direct!y down at the GPU, or directly up at the lid of the case (one inch away). Will that be sufficient? I can't point it directly at the exhaust fan.

They always pan out in two ways, either some person lost their backpack while picking flowers or need you to find some obcene amount of flowers OR its go kill x amount of wolves, spiders, skeletons. there are extremly few quests in the Witcher 3 that actualy requiers any amount of real effort from the player.

I honestly dont either. Unless you are calling every quest where you are required to travel from one place to another a fetch quest then I cannot see how you think every quest is a fetch quest in the Witcher. Unless you think every quest in RPG's that isn't a main story quest is a fetch quest in which case I think we have very different definitions of the word.

Well there already appears to be some confusion... It was claimed that all quests were fetch quests and then claimed that you had to either gather a crap load of X or kill a slew of Y... Obviously kill quests are fetch quests. And so are the ones where you have to kill something for its drops. Though I'd call that a drop quest.

I haven't played the game but I'm assuming if you've ever been asked to kill something, certainly the game is not solely fetch quests.

Not to be jumping on the hate train but it just seems really unlikely.

I personally tend to expand Fetch Quests to include any basic, "Go to X to fetch Y and bring it back to me" style quests.

Generally there's no further story to the quest, no complications or diversions, or plot hooks of any time.

EG: Most of Skyrim and Fallout 3-4's content runs entirely off of these. - "Oh no, raiders stole my locket and are hiding a case, go get it back and I'll pay you money."

Or, "Go to Hardware town and retrieve the Flux Sensor."

The Fetch Quest would also tend to overlap with the traditional definition of "Macguffin."

"In fiction, a MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin or maguffin) is a plot device in the form of some goal, desired object, or other motivator that the protagonist pursues, often with little or no narrative explanation. The specific nature of a MacGuffin is typically unimportant to the overall plot."

So an example of a not-a-fetch-quest in, say, Skyrim would be "There's Bandits at Halted Stream Camp- kill their leader"- right? Because you're not actually getting anything from the bandits, and could even just sneak in, slit the leader's throat in the night and sneak out without taking anything, and still succeed in the quest. But then, you have to go back to the Jarl to get your payment and complete the quest....

But in general, I'd put that in the same exact category as the "fetch quest" because it literally has no bearing on the story and is there purely to give me XP and bore me

It depends, it's all up to personal definitions. But yeah, I guess yup, that'd be fair to say it's not a fetch quest.

Still doesn't make it an interesting quest of course.

On another note, I've been watching some people play a game tonight, "That Dragon, Cancer."
When I say words cannot express it, they honestly can't.

If there's ever a debate about how games are important, or if they have meaning, or if they have no artism, it just blows it out of the water.

I dunno, if you aren't fetching anything I don't see how it could be called a fetch quest.

If you wanted to call it a filler quest, or a plotless quest, or something... I guess I could follow the reasoning... but to me fetch quest really stops after they ask you to do anything but go and get something and return it to them.

Are you sure you're not hating the game because you want to hate it, rather than for what it is?

Most quests, no matter how minor, have some interesting stories or things happening in them.

No, seeing how the two other Witcher games are some of my all time favoritt games. Its a mixture of the utter mindless quests and lack of a immersive story for me at least.

Looking to take a break from WoW tonight... the level 80 starting area... the underwater one... has got me kind of soured from wanting to play any of it tonight. Surely, if Cataclysm's class changes hadn't encouraged me to take a break... going through these last 4 levels surely would have... there is something clumsy about the underwater area... even right from the get go the quest that takes you there seems kind of awkward. I abandoned the quest and restarted it multiple times thinking it had bugged on me... I finally checked wowhead.com and read up on the quest... turns out its a sort of timed thing. You just have to sit through listening to voiced dialogue between some background npcs... then wait in silence for a minute or two... then this boat that you're supposed to ride eventually shows up. This is one of the examples... I ended up having to go to wowhead.com some more times as I got through certain parts of the underwater area... in fact, one of the system requirements for this expansion should have been 'Bookmark wowhead.com and run game in windowed mode because you're going to be referring a lot to this website'.

Anyway... tonight it will be all about starting a Monk for Diablo III Season 5.

Vash was the weakest area in Cataclysm in my opinion. All my characters level in Mount Hyjal, then move on to Deepholm until 85. Doesn't really take all that long with Heirlooms. Without them, Hyjal>Deepholm>Twilight Highlands might be the better bet.

That's probably what I'll do next character I level up from scratch. For the meantime, maybe I'll stick my heirlooms back on again to speed things up as they are now. I stopped using them at about 78 because I got bored with the look of the stuff... also I kind of wanted to slow things down a bit to enjoy the Cataclysm stuff since I never went through it.

Vash's experience for me was ruined further when the day after I killed the rare seahorse mob, a patch was implemented that made a mount of itself a guaranteed drop from it.

This came close to being one of the most irritating moments of the game, surpassed only by hunting down the Time-Lost Proto Drake in the Storm Peaks of Northrend and being ninja'd to to the tag by the same player twice in a row. You can't even pick the mount up if you already own it. There is literally no other point to killing it twice than to just be a dick to everyone else. I haven't bothered with it since.

Vash gets even more annoying because there's a bug in the final (possibly Alliance version only) quest that causes it to bug out during the long trip at the end of the quest. Last I'd heard, Blizzard never bothered to fix it, because by the time the bug popped up (it wasn't there originally), the content was "old".

I liked the zone when I ran it. It has a much better storyline than Hyjal, imo, and it has some neat stuff going on in the zone. But the three-dimensional stuff just gets stupidly annoying at times. And then there are the occasional moments when you find yourself sitting there wondering, "Okay, where am I supposed to go now?"

Still playing Battlefront a lot on PS4. Still have a lot of fun with it.

Pre ordering Deserts of Kharak this week which will give me some massive RTS games to play through. I've realised I never finished the last mission in Homeworld (at the time my PC couldn't keep up with the massive amount of ships), and I never got very far into Homeworld 2 (I could never get my head around the difficulty scaling, because I didn't realise how it worked). Hopefully Deserts keeps me occupied until they fix formations in Homeworld, then I can move onto that and keep going through the games.

Also picked my Vita back up. After hearing that Odin Sphere is getting a remastered release on Vita, I'm continuing on my way through Muramasa and Dragons Crown in anticipation.

Is it one of those ones with the funny conditions like 'do not get hit at all' or 'sabotage X guys before attacking'? That could be why,

On an unrelated note, has anyone here played the game Dragon's Dogma? I'm looking up picking it up as I like the look of the combat and class system, and the boss battles look nice and epic, just wondering if anyone can recommend (or otherwise) the game? It seems to be almost too good to be true, with the combat style of Dark Souls without the hair-tearing difficulty of Dark Souls, with an awesomely variable class system on top and the classic, party-based combat that seems a bit more actiony than Dragon Age.

Started playing Dragon Age: Origins. It's been a lot of fun, and I'm excited to get further into it. However, I'm having a little bit of trouble with the Tower of Ishal. (I know, it's so early in the game) It's mostly because my party refuses to do their right job, IE mage tries to tank, Alistair is sitting in the corner crying wolf, etc. I suppose I should fiddle with their tactic settings or something, to fix it, but for now I'm stumped.

I also just got Town of Salem and TT Simulator, so I'm excited to try those out.

Nah, that's the weird thing, it's 'just' a standard 4 round challenge. Albeit, a rather difficult one.

But I've done difficult challenges before, quite often rather successfully, this one is just kicking my butt, however. I can quite regularly get through Rounds 1 and 2 without getting any hits, Round 3 maybe a quarter of a time I manage to take no damage.

Round 4 just blats me every time. - 2 stun sticks, 2 rifles, 2 medics, 2 shields, 2 knifes, 2 normal dudes and 2 brutes.
It just slaughters me.

I'm starting to think Robin is just a little bit rubbish...

Since Panau is known for being one of the largest world maps in video game history, I thought I'd take a road trip with the mod installed, so I can look at the lovely sights and idly drive around while the world burns around me.

Nerfed Hunters? I played a retribution paladin from BC through Cataclysm. Is there a class that's been nerfed to uselessness for no reason any more than retribution paladins? The only patch I enjoyed playing was one in WotLK where we became absolute beasts, and the forums overflowed with mages and death knights raging and demanding nerfs. In typical paladin style the nerfs were quick to come and swiftly put us back down to 'worst of the worst' where we apparently belonged.

I eventually got sick of Blizzard's adhd approach to retri paladin balance and abandoned it.

Blizzard's "radically reinvent half of the classes" approach for each expansion does get a bit tedious. I've been running a Mistweaver Monk as my main (though mostly doing solo stuff with it). And it's an overly complicated moving parts class (you have to use certain abilities to generate chi so that you can use certain other abilities to spend chi so that you'll have enough stacks of mana tea when you start to run out of mana in the middle of a long fight...) whose primary reward is the ability to fistweave (i.e. heal your party by beating up mobs).

So Blizzard nerfed fistweaving in WoD, and is apparently completely removing it in the upcoming expansion.

There were a number of other changes introduced during the lead-up to WoD (my favorite was suddenly struggling to heal with my monk - which I was leveling up when the pre-WoD patch went live that heavily nerfed healing, and being told by WoD beta participants that everything was fine because our role now revolved around the "multi-strike" stat - which, of course, could not be found on any of the gear that I was using to level up because it didn't exist until WoD; oh, and I also enjoyed the bit when I noticed that the same patch gave me an ability that tweaked healing spheres at a level before mistweavers actually started generating healing spheres - yes, the Blizzard devs know *exactly* what they're doing...), but fist-weaving was a "mist-weaver" exclusive thing (none of the other healing jobs are exclusively melee-focused for damage generation) so the changes to it got the most attention.

Speaking of things WoD nerfed, Atonement healing on Disc priests. I loved running my 'loomed up Disc priest through LFG as she levelled, simultaneously topping both the healing and DPS charts, and some successful raid guilds used it as a valid healing tactic.

The removal of Atonement's 'smart heal' that could keep tanks alive and implementation as a random heal that wouldn't care about healing the most damaged player in range really killed the idea. It was a perfectly valid way of separating Discipline and Holy, and really gave a Discipline a reason for existing as well as a playstyle that wasn't "spam healing spells until the group kills itself and vote-kicks you".

I eventually got sick of Blizzard's adhd approach to retri paladin balance and abandoned it.

Hunters just as I left were to get their pet at level 1, so from then on they never learned to kite properly. Just send in the pet to tank, whether it was suitable or not, and range attack like a less effective caster. Ammo bags were basically made worthless as all a hunter had to carry was a single arrow/shot and got infinite uses out of it, annoying everyone who took Engineering or Leatherwork as a skill because no-one wanted crafted shot any more and no-one wanted shot bags or quivers any more. Lost a lot of the strategy of playing a hunter right there.

Before I left you could tell a true hunter from a Huntard in the newbie areas as the true hunters would ensure they were at max range by walking forward and back until they had got a clean shot at the edge of range, would turn around and run away as soon as they had shot, then jumped, turned in mid-air to shoot again, and repeated the process - or would fire through a tree and run around the same tree to keep the creatures from getting to them firing as they could.

The Huntards, however, walked up to the mob, fired once, then had to revert to getting out their little axe and beating it on the head until it died. A hunter could complete the entire area without taking damage, the huntards had to heal several times.

Now however, almost every hunter just send out the pet and stays at range. When they first encounter a mob [or boss] that can take out the pet and still have enough to take out the hunter after, they don't know what to do. [unless you went through the entire process pre-nerf and already had the knowledge.]

But yes, I agree that blizzard's response to complaints is as twisted as the complaints themselves. "That character class is making way more money than me, I demand you reduce their earnings to a level lower than mine!" rather than "That class is showing that my class is at a disadvantage, can you please make my class more equal." and they carry out a nerf campaign. Try that with the boss at work and see where it gets you!

Wow, elitist much dude? That kind of attitude is a good reason to not discuss things with people who play WoW habitually....

The more casual gamers end up playing the game, the more they cater to them. Why wouldn't they? Blizzard is a business. Not to mention the fact that there *are* new people starting up the game and what kind of donkey-cave do you have to be to judge someone who just started playing the game (as a hunter, or anything) against your own elitist standards?

As the expansions have piled on and the levels have gotten ever higher, little esoteric bits of classes have been clipped off to keep things streamlined and sensible to play. I've played the alternative, where everything was left how it lay. Everquest was *not* friendly to new players, and it was *not* fun trying to figure out WTF to do. Spending hard earned money on an entire line of effectively useless spells because they were nerfed and then forgotten, without so much as a change in tooltip... Sure hunters lost ammo bags, big flippin deal. And the whole 'get to range and wiggle back and forth thing', really? Seriously, that's how you mark a good player? Because if you're so good and awesome would you really need to do the wiggling to know you were at the right range? I shudder how long it might take you to go about your day with all of that wasted time.

Besides the fact that hunters had melee abilities for a reason, hell it's even becoming a spec in Legion. I may come back just to try it out.

I'll give you that hunters were always in a weird place, having a somewhat higher skill cap than some other classes usually meant that the best players could do stupid things with them as the devs had to keep the class good enough for less experienced handlers... but man that's some hardcore complaining.

I, for one, love the streamlining of everything. I leveled my hunter and warrior 85-100 after a long break recently and I had as much fun with them as I ever did. The warrior especially. Stance dancing was an art, and when I had more time to play it was...acceptable... but I can tell you that I did not miss it a single bit catching up to 100.

I finished the last of the 'Arkham Episodes' tonight in Arkham Knight.

It's kinda sad really. They're a really neat concept and could have genuinely worked as an idea - A little like how Bioware do their dlc's.

Instead, only one, "Batgirl: A Matter of Family" is a decent length (I completed it in just over 2 hours). If they had made that one 30 minutes to an hour longer and actually fleshed out the other ones, it would have been something impressive. I still have most of 'A season of Infamy' to go though. - Despite those missions being rather short, at least there's a bunch of them to play.

I dunno, I should love Arkham Knight, I'm even one of the fortunate few that never had any problems with it on PC. And yet, everything in it has this tinge of disappointment and being a little bit poo.

I've always found the "They're a business, why shouldn't they cater to the most people that play?" argument to be interesting.

It makes perfect sense, and is perfectly defensible. But at the same time, what about the argument that games are a form of art, and should be considered something to be crafted to as high a standard as possible.

Movies took that turn, as did cars and a lot of other consumer products- Some of the people who made those objects decided that they should be 'more' than just their base components, that the companies should stand for more (even if it's just a marketing ploy)- what about video games?

Well isn't WoW still on top of the market as far as those things go? Not to mention the ridiculously awesome progression in how immersive and downright fun their quests have gotten. Come WoD, no longer am I going to town, finding a quest, running out to the field to kill some wolves, coming back...rinse repeat all the way to cap when you replace wolves with dragon people or..whatever... oh no.. No no.. I get to follow thrall and basically the whole Justice League of Alliance and Horde VIPS smashing through battle lines, blowing up the dark portal and doing espionage behind enemy lines. Hell, I think back in Pandaria even there was a sweet quest series that involved gunning down a bunch of enemies on a heavy aircraft gun before rappelling into their midst to dispatch even more.

Just because WoW is easier for new players to play now, that doesn't mean it's lost *anything* in terms of production value or innovation. The points we were discussing that were lost before were more akin to outdated legacy/relics from previous MMOs before they learned to do things in a way that I would argue is better. If some minor loss of nuance and largely superfluous items/slots/abilities brings the way for streamlined gameplay with a larger player base (because more accessible/user friendly/easier to play)...I won't be complaining. Or well, I dunno if the player base is really larger per se, but I think it's larger for the changes than it would be without them.

Granted, this perspective is how I feel now. If you asked me several years ago back in college when I could play a lot (and still was playing, really didn't stick it out long this last time at all) to talk about the same stuff.. dunno, could have given you a different answer.

The point of "art" isn't to show how your tastes are superior or more refined than those of everyone else. The point of art is to create something that speaks to people about the human condition. And there's nothing that says that's incompatible with mass appeal.

I don't see why you wouldn't pick the third best model in the game over an anorexic atrocity that never should have gone past the drawing board (which is only increased by the prevalence of 2D armour and plate bikinis, the former of which makes some of the overly bulky male models look more sensible). Unless you are a roleplayer, or something.

People usually tell me they pick them 'because they want a nice butt to look at when they play'. Go to hell, I say.

On the topic of hunters, they always felt strong to me, actually. Kiting is easy to them, they don't have mana or interruptability or anything like what casters have - they are basically melee with 40yd range on their attacks!

I wasn't trying to be elitist, just explaining why I left the game. I played WoW from the first days of vanilla. My early hunters were huntards themselves. Then I was shown the tactical advantages that kiting brought by a more experienced player. He showed me how to basically take a starting toon and as a hunter go through the entire starting area without taking a hit unless I had been surprised by a mob spawn, or was otherwise not paying attention. He even gave me a couple of gold to buy the best equipment I could afford.

And when I had reached a high enough level, I did the same in turn. Making the hunters I met stronger and increasing my enjoyment of the game whilst making them more likely to be taken up by a guild or doing better in a PUG.

The fact that Blizzard took that part of the game away from me - did I have the correct ammo, both in type and amount, do I take an ammo bag which will allow me to carry more ammo but won't allow me to put other items inside it, or do I go for a smaller bag that I can put loot in - was a let-down for me. I preferred the tactical advantages that a well run hunter could bring to the table. I was a ranged DPS that could have a tank so I could run alone when I wanted to.

Then Blizzard changed the game. Any skinner/leatherworker characters lost out on the income from expensive high capacity bags. Gnome or dwarf miner/engineer characters no longer had to craft shot for others to use, all they had to do was buy a single piece of shot and it lasted forever.

That is why I left the game. if you stayed and still enjoyed it, wonderful, it was an amazing game.

I now play a very similar character in Fallout 4. A guy whose philosophy is basically kill the enemy at as long a range as possible so that they don't have a chance to hurt me. I run around with my own crafted armour, a 50 Cal sniper rifle capable of removing a supermutant's head in one shot, and a dog for a companion.

Yes, I still have to get into close quarters at times, but I still feel as though I have failed when that happens

Just went to the Arsenal page... turns out that is really his name

Fair enough Conrad, sorry if I got snippy. Probably one of those days. I totally understand learning to get good at something and how that can be rewarding.

Honestly have trouble playing anything that isn't a troll because I'm tall and lanky and usually laid back like that. WoW Trolls are my spirit animal? Or whatever the kids are saying these days

I never picked a race/gender based on who had the cutest butt, but I do tend to review the different animations for all of them before going with something, unless the racial is just that important to me this time. Femdead, for instance, do some kind of back/front flip every time they do a one handed special move. Awesome if that's your thing, really really obnoxious if it isn't. Same with the Nelf front flips and Belf twirls. I could probably have lived with a Belf Warrior. But not a caster. Two of my friends ended up playing Belf Paladins and all I can think while I'm sitting back with the healers is how glad my "casting a big spell" animation more closely resembled a kamehameha than it did tickling a giant's balls like the Belf. Shudder. Then I made a Belf priest just because of how stupid that animation was

And I thought I liked Tauren, until I played a tauren warrior for a year or two... feels like you're slogging through freaking molasses the first time you get snared by anything, any percentage, even 20 or 30. Had to switch that to a goblin...

But yeah still done with wow, even after a brief month and a half spat. I think I'm rapidly running out of Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky but I'm not gonna slow down playing just because of that.

Almost finished Saint's Row 4. I try to set aside at least 3 - 4 hours whenever I tackle the finale to a game (having to stop midway would ruin the experience for me), so hopefully it will be finished soon.

On a side note, I swear the Mass Effect voice acting is getting to me. I was walking by a classroom that was watching a documentary that I swear was narrated by Keith Davids, and the first thing that came to mind was, "Oh my god, Captain Anderson is teaching history!"

Better not play Fallout 4 then, as the guy who did the voice of Garrus also voices way too many NPC's using that very same voice.

The difference is, of course, in Saints Row IV, Keith David is playing as... Keith David.

Plus you have the awesomely badass Laura Bailey playing The (Female) President of the USA.

I do love how they take the mickey out of Mass Effect with the 'romance' options in Saints Row.

Honestly, if you've never played Saints Row 3 and 4, you should make the effort (assuming you don't like non 'serious' games). They're basically love letters to the 80's and 90's.

I can never be bothered giving reasons for character race/gender choices; I find that most people are part of one of two camps: they'll either not give a crap, or they'll bug you about it regardless. I choose X race of Y gender because I want to, and anyone who has issues with that can get fethed.

The ones I hate from that second camp, regardless of game, are the ones who always try and say things like "ohh, the male of [x] class is so much better than the female version. They're [insert stat description here] than them in combat"

Good for you. Play what you want man and screw everybody else who challenges it (unless it's really, really harmful then maybe you should stop).

-----

I've been playing 'Wargame: Red Dragon'. Marder 2's are such a fun west german transport. It's like a medium tank with a freaking 50mm cannon that blows through apc's and the like and can even challenge tanks and just disgorges infantry where you want. It's so beautiful I might cry. The cost is pretty high though. American transports feel pretty garbage in comparison even if they have some decent helo transports.

I still think most soviet factions are more powerful than the Nato factions with the exception of maybe north korea and china. Oddly enough blue dragons (south korea and japan) are surprisingly potent military forces. As far as Nato goes I'd say japan, south korea, west Germany, france and the UK all are good or decent. All Scandinavian factions (Sweden, Denmark and Norway) are ok when combined but aren't that hot separately. Denmark or Australia by itself is garbage and Canada is only just above them. Once again my opinion but there's no clue how much of each unit each nation had (infantry, helo, plane, tank, vehicle, navy).

As has been stated by in-game friends soviet helo forces are almost always better with the exception being the apache type helos and their equivalents for other nations. The usa also has some ok helos but nothing too hot.

Most countries have various strengths and weaknesses. The ownership of the helicopter lanes seems firmly in soviet hands though and they may even quickly take the skies given their AA abilities. I'd fear for Nato if the war ever did happen. We might just need all the many Nato countries just to handle the few potent soviet countries.

But yeah, SR4 is a brilliant homage and parody of Mass Effect (Hey Kinzie? You wanna feth? *sucker-punches you* "Let's do this!)", the Matrix, Transformers, THEY LIVE and the like. Exalted and quoted for truth.

As I have a habit of playing the games I like many, many times, I always end up with an army of characters, and the split is generally 50:50 for games like Fallout 4or Mass Effect where you only get the choice of gender [How I would love the next fallout to let you play as a Ghoul, but it probably won't happen as they would have a hard time having feral ghouls attack non-ghoul players but leave ghoul players alone.] WoW I split my characters fairly evenly across race and gender, not even restraining myself to alliance or horde. Although my favourites were my male gnome hunter and my female Belf mage.

I don't understand why some people get so worked up on whether you are playing your own gender in a computer game - especially when your not even playing your own species!

Yeah seriously I find it more a problem people are playing WoW at all than what character they're playing ;P. I mean it's like being hooked on a crappy drug that's insanely addictive. I dunno to each their own but I never got the love. Warhammer fantasy was superior (at least as far as my tastes go) until GW killed the game. I find it funny people think warhammer fantasy is just not popular considering warcraft (a game considered to be a copy of it) is now about to get it's own freaking movie. Don't sell me bull as I could go to GW for that and pay 5 times more than it should cost to get it.

A ghoul in fallout would be awesome to play. I just fear for how 'romance' scenes would work out. Oh god that's a horrifying prospect! You're all thinking it now thanks to me ;P.

--------

I just want to play Xcom 2 already. Until then i'll settle for playing more 'Wargame: Red Dragon'. Ugh this feels like crap to play in comparison even if it's a good game.

Oooh ouch. Is it from steam? If so, are you sure you just aren't syncing right with steam cloud? I thought I lost 25 hours worth of Legend of Heroes because the game would crash every time I tried to load anything. DL/installed the game on my other rig and the saves were all right there... so I uninstalled it from my tabtop and when I reinstalled it updated properly and all of my saves were in place.

Supposedly just restarting steam so it could resync to the cloud should have been enough but it wasn't working for me.

Destiny being a pretty poor game without it, but the Taken King stories addressed the vast majority of the issues people had about the original game.

More Dragon's Dogma today, I've recovered from the corrupted save, just about managed to complete my first proper quest (after many, many attempts), spent most of the afternoon trying to kill a Chimera before giving up after about the 10th attempt and sneaking past it, and pretty much got my class/playstyle sorted now (a mix of sword, daggers and bow for the most part, went for a hybrid Fighter/Rogue class rather than straight Rogue for the slightly better armour and the option to go sword'n'board when the situation requires it).

Really enjoying the game, the mechanics are very solid and the gameplay very satisfying.

Oh, right. The Firaxis humble bundle is still up, yeah? I like the idea of getting the xcom expansions for less than it would cost normally, though I'm a bit reticent as I haven't played xcom in a good while. What about the Civ games and other included items, stuff that's worth picking up? I've played some RTS ala old warcrafts and starcraft, but that's about it for RTS, not really sure how the Civ games run.

I'd definitely recommend it as you can get it very cheap these days (I paid £7.99 for the version with the Dark Arisen expansion as well). The combat is more action-orientated than something like Skyrim, it has a nice party mechanic and some very, very cool skills and spells, and the boss/monster fights are great; everything has strengths and weaknesses, various ways of approaching it ect.

It's a little light on character and setting, and is hard in places (though nothing like Dark Souls, you can actually get somewhere with this unless you do what I did and spend a couple of hours banging my head against a wall made of monsters a much higher level than I had any business taking on...) and it has a very nice 'classic RPG' feel to it but with modern mechanics. It seems to have a lot of parallels with Dragon Age (the next game on my 'buy it cheap' list) if you've ever played that.

Now Dragon Age is more of an isometric game with more camera angles, a lot of auto attacks and cooldowns halfway between an ISO and MMO... sort of like Neverwinter nights and stuff.

So is this game more like that or more like a 1st/3rd party action game? I may just have to look it up. Your initial description had me thinking similar to Heroes of Might and Magic, whereas comparing it to Dragon Age makes it something entirely different

Ah, I was just going off what I'd seen of Dragon Age, having not played it I might be totally off the mark. Party-based combat with a lot of reliance of synergy and stuff, but thinking about it, the combat is probably more hack'n'slash kind of stuff (though still quite deep). You're probably best off just looking some stuff up, aside from Skyrim fantasy RPG games are not something I have a huge amount of experience with, so I'm probably of very little help there.

Trying to complete the story mode of Mortal Kombat 9. Since I usually take a glass cannon strategy to fighting games (pressure the opponent and focus heavily on offense with little regard to defence) it's pretty tough. Also, I swear those 1 vs 2 matches are just plain unfair.

The Civ games are a lot of fun. They're turn-based instead of RTS, but it does involve quite a bit of strategy. I remember spending a ton of hours on those, especially Civ 4 and 5. Of course, the AI is a bit... strange (if you've heard of the infamous Ghandi nuclear war joke, this is where it came from and this is what will happen), but it's still pretty cool if you want to run a multi-city empire. I think there's quite the modding community behind it too (I think Civ 5 supports mods from Steam Workshop)

The Elder Scrolls Online. The way the game's raids work is that you can enter them at level 10 minimum, but on average most are leveled for 50. Everyone however has their base stats (health, stamina, magick, damage, etc) leveled to the highest level upon entering however.

My beef? Spending almost two hours on an easy dungeon which usually is a half hour. Why? Because I was grouped with 3 level 11s. How is that bad? Well, a level 11 has barely any skills, only one weapon set, isn't able to resurrect other players and ...well, is just a bit crap really.

I only started doing raids after I hit level 50 (even then I gave it a few levels), because I knew I would still only be barely passing the bar. I don't get why level 10s are trying to do the same dungeons. The joke is that there's a <Level 50 version of the dungeon available which gives the same rewards. Heh, so I'm kind of at the point where if I see someone of that level I'll just tell them to group into the right version of the Raids and kick them. ;

Warhammer online did something like that with PvP. Now... PvP pretty much was the entire game (though there were quests and group events too)so it made sense to include everyone but... I forget the exact level ranges but it was something like lvl 4-9 all did one bracket, and then 10-19.. or something like that. And yes, they boosted you to the top level or just below it, and the skills boosted to the appropriate level... but you didn't gain any skills you hadn't yet learned, and you wouldn't have any PvP survival gear either. You could certainly contribute...but mostly you would just be contributing points to the enemy team =/

ESO boosts people's stats, but doesn't boost their armour, give them new skills, provide them with the ability to resurrect or give them their second bar. I.e. someone without all that is useless in one of the hard dungeons apart from being a damage soak (and only if they were already a low level tank).

I'm a Dunmer Dragonknight Tank in the Ebonheart Pact. Population's all right. There's enough content there till you reach the high levels then you'll move onto Raids and PVP. I'd level up sooner rather than later, as whilst there;s a large number of low level players playing the DLC is a bit silly until you get to a high level as the loot scales.

Something else re: ESO Raids. Having spent an hour and a half trying to beat the easiest boss in the White Gold Tower dungeon I'll say: do not attempt the second hardest dungeon in the game if you don't know what the hell you're doing. At one point a min-maxing DPS joined who had barely any health, then complained they were being one-shotted by stuff that barely damages me. Again, I'm blaming this on the players, not the dungeon. There's a non-hard mode version of the dungeon out there that people can do, yet they join the veteran one without knowing what they're supposed to be doing :(

I think I'll go back to playing with toy soldiers...

In ESO when someone dies it costs one Soul Gem to resurrect themselves, or they go back to the last checkpoint. Against regular trash mobs a player can resurrect at any time as long as they have a Soul Gem, however against bosses you can only come back if resurrected by another player. FYI dying also damages armour, so if you keep dying you're losing damage mitigation, meaning you'll die more. You can repair armour with easy to acquire armour repair kits (daily crafting quests always give at least one, and you can do handful of these a day). A pity then nobody carries those either.

Typically the way this works with a boss is that when someone dies a DPS (parties are usually 1 Tank, 1 Healer, 2 DPS) resurrects them. If both DPS are down then the Tank takes all the aggro and the Healer resses. This whole sequence is screwed though when one of those in the chain doesn't bother to res. You can sacrifice DPS for a few seconds, but if you start losing healing then that's bad. Its even worse when the Tank starts having to resurrect people as they then have to deal with being attacked, sans their damage mitigation.

...Though the above goes both for guys who can't resurrect people because their too cheap (you can buy Soul Gems for nothing) and those who on a high horse. I don't get DPS who continue to attack a boss as someone lays next to them dead.

Its a game where you can Solo a non-Veteran dungeon if you wanted to. Make it to a Veteran version of the same run and then you can make up for a couple of crutches. In Hard Mode though its impossible to make it through unless everyone's pulling their weight and knows the boss mechanics. Voice Chat would help in the latter's case, but if you have people that actually know what they're doing you can speed run them in public regardless. ...Actually meeting such folk outside of a guild is rare though, which is odd then why so many people attempt the daily Hard Mode Raids only to be wiped over and over (a guy can hope though).

Anyhow, I've decided to shelf the game till the next DLC comes out in February. In the mean time I've a ton of models backlogged. Notably though, a few based on the Elder Scrolls Online. XD

Yeah dying and coming back over and over has always been one of the things in MMOs that I've had trouble suspending my disbelief over. The fact that the game design allows (encourages?) you to do this during dungeons is... meh. Glad I never went past the beta. Thanks for the information though

No problem. Admitedly when playing the regular game myself when I got bored of grinding through locations to reach quest givers I'd do just that. I'd sprint through the place up until a roadblock like a door, ignoring all the mobs, and let myself die when I got there. When I resurrected in the same spot, make it past the roadblock and repeat.

Of course that's just when you're lazy. As a Tank I don't have amazing DPS, but mitigated that by being over leveled most of the time. In dungeons you can do the same thing, but need to kill the bosses. If you're any good though you shouldn't be dying. Dying comes down to someone screwing up.

As a Tank I die either: because I didn't see the obvious tell for an attack and didn't block it. I stepped in glowing red "don't stand here" AOE. I had to do someone else's job on top of pulling all the aggro. Even with avoiding all the nasty attacks, I ran out of magicka/stamina to heal myself and the healer didn't then step in and heal me. The latter at least can be covered by using my invulnerable ability.

...But yes, that's all under the assumption that everything goes well and people know what they're doing. In public groups expect to die over and over. Which at least from a plot standpoint is justified in that you're a warrior who doesn't have a soul, so uses other's to bring them back from the Daedric planes (or, if you complete the main quest, the champion of a god(s)).

EDIT:

Tried out Talisman on a whim... it was pretty fun... might have been even more fun if I played with more players (I just did a 1 v 1 game against AI). Got schooled by a Priest (I chose sorceress).

I've been playing Blade and Soul. It's not as grindy (at least, not yet) as typical Asian f2p fare. Just running quests seems to do a decent job of leveling you up.

The grind aspect that I've seen so far revolves around equipment. The best equipment in the game is the "Hongmoon" gear that you get very early on. But there's a catch. In order for your gear to remain competitive, you have to level it up by sacrificing similar pieces of gear. And after every five levels of gear upgrades, you have to "evolve" the item using a specific piece of gear. The grind aspect revolves around the RNG element needed to obtain some of the items. For instance, to evolve your weapon, you might need a weapon of the same type that you can only obtain by spinning a Wheel of Fortune (yes, these exist in the game). And you get between 2-5 spins (depending on how much damage you did) every time you kill a frequently respawning boss mob. If you're lucky, then the spin will give you a locked weapon chest (there are a number of other items of varying value that might result). If you're really lucky, then when you use a key to unlock the chest, you'll get the weapon you need, and not a weapon for another class. Keys are frequently provided by quests within the game, can be purchased from merchants, and can be crafted by players. So you're not going to spend yourself into debt trying to level up your character (at least, not that I've seen so far).

About half of the gear appears to be vanity-only. You have a weapon, a ring, a necklace, and an earring that all boost stats. Your clothing-slot is purely cosmetic, and there are a few other slots that I believe are also cosmetic-only (though I don't know for sure). There's open world faction-based PvP (and everyone has to eventually join one of two factions - you can either do it early on, or later in the story). But if you're not interested in open world PvP, then you simply don't equip the outfit for one of the PvP factions.

Combat is purely action-paced, somewhat similar to Tera. Strike blows, block enemy attacks, and string a sequence of moves along to form a combo and do something special (for instance, block a move by an opponent, which allows you to knock them back, which dazes them, allowing you to kick them up into the air, follow them into the air while punching them, and then slam them into the ground).

The gold-spammers are *really* bad, though. They appear to be organized, which makes things even worse. When I was online the other day, faction chat (which you can't join until you join a faction, which requires you to at least play through the opening sequence) was hit by what appeared to be five characters, all spamming for the same website. Then a little while later, there were five more spammers, all spamming for the same web site. Then five more. Then five more. Then five more. What was happening was that as each set of five spammers disappeared (and presumably got dealt with by the GMs), five *new* characters would start spamming the chat channel. Given that you can't just automatically spam the Faction chat channel a couple of minutes after creating a character, this implies that one of the RMT websites had created dozens of characters beforehand in anticipation of spamming the faction chat channel in question. The end result was that every few minutes, the chat channel in question was rendered unusable.

Personally, I'd like to tar and feather every individual who has ever used an RMT service. They deserve it for encouraging the RMT scourge.

The rolls seem to taunt me, but I do think it's just comfirmation bias. (Is that the right term?)

Yes, my guys seem to miss at the worst possible moments, but I also had an archer get cornered by one of the sister types, and then survive a bunch of rounds as she swung and missed at him over and over. So it's not just me getting all the bad rolls.

It just seems like it.

Ever have one of those sessions where you can literally perceive the ebb and flow of your own luck? I notice it more with tabletop games that directly use dice, but sometimes with games.

I'll start out all crits and max damages, and then it slowly winds down to where I'm rolling all ones, and then back and forth for awhile.

Shooters are much more predictable, almost always infinitely better for the first round or two and then I slowly get worse as I burn off whatever accumulated 'good at shooters' magic that slowly builds over time. I always seemed to to do better my first map or two after being away for a couple of weeks. But always worse after a few rounds. That's not luck so much as barely perceptible fatigue setting in though, I guess.

My luck seems to work based on how much I've planned something. If I've got a move lined up just right, it's got a high percentage of success, and may make or break me? Yeah, that'll fail.

It's the times that I'm not paying attention to what I'm doing, when things don't matter... Those are the times my luck comes back.

Ahh yeah. I'll take x-com for instance. Say I always make sure I've got 100% chance to hit so I'm good to go, that one time I need to hit at 70% in order to save someone or whatever... boom miss. Every time. Next time I take a wild <50% chance to hit that isn't important... that'll go through

I experience this to an extent myself, particularly when playing the Batman combat maps. In "Arkham City" there was a map (now duplicated in Arkham Knight), where there were basically infinite bad guys. Still, you got a medal if you reached 100,000 points. - This, as you can guess, was a high number and something very difficult to pull off. - Infinite badguys, very finite health...
What I found was, I could get very, very near the goal - 92,000 to 98,000 points the first couple of times I tried it in a day. However, the more and more I tried it in a session, the worse I did, until eventually I was struggling to reach 50,000 points.

I eventually decided that the problem was adrenaline. - The more I tried, the more Bats died, the more excited I got. In this case, it wasn't a matter of practice being perfect, it was practice was making me sloppy! I did (after literally years), eventually reach this gold medal score and it was a words of a certain, shall we say, muppet, that helped me achieve it....

Master Yoda of course!

Yeah, frustration plays a factor too, but I find for twitchy games my control and precision fade preeeety quick. For hard levels like that, I usually leave them for a week and come back and that's the first thing I do. Doesn't always work..but sometimes.

Just found out today that I never got the 'Slingshot' DLC for X-com... bought it since it was on sale and reinstalled X-com. I'll probably start another campaign tonight after some hobby work.

Mainly on tabletop for me, but my luck with anything in general is pretty piss-poor. A lot of the time there isn't even a downward spiral, it'll just be "okay, everything turns to gak now, have fun" for no apparent reason other than because it can. I have witnesses.

Did some DnD type campaigns using 40k models on TT Simulator. I only had luck with Kroot, and everything else got slaughtered to a man. Meanwhile, I had lucky enough rolls to get two knarlocs out of the deal (had to roll several 20's on a D20 for those)

Other than that, I restarted on Mount and Blade Warband. Relearning to fear mass crossbow volleys, and also laughing at Khergit without their horses. They cannot keep a castle for the life of them. And for the record, I'm not using the hilariously OP nords as my faction either.

Wait. Tabletop Simulator can do that? I thought it was only limited to the classic board games like chess.

Yeah, the steam workshop, among other places, allows lots of different pieces to be integrated. I even saw a fallout themed monopoly you could play on there. You can still play chess if it suits you, but there's a lot more to it.

I just bought and downloaded the complete edition of Civilization V on Steam, since it was 75% off. I'm a big fan of the Civ series, so I've been waiting for an excuse to get this. Probably gonna be playing it for a while as my go-to game.

Installing Path of Exile to give it a try and because my friend is talking about trying it out for game nights.

Also installing ZMR because why not.

I've still never finished MnB to my satisfaction. I mean technically native is sandbox with no win condition... But I could have theoretically beaten it. And I think prophesy of pendor actually could be beaten... Alas I always get bored before I game over the country.

Path of Exile was interesting... feels... classic. I think I'll stick with Diablo III though.

Still need to try ZMR

Fighting dragons in Skyrim. Good times, mostly.

The thing is, the AI gets a bit confused by multiple threats, don't they? Here I am in a bandit camp, a blood dragon coming straight at me. One of the bandits shouts "Slay the dragon!"

And then she shoots me in the face.

SupCom 2
Its ok. Not as good as the first one though.
They got rid of a few neat mechanics, like using power stations to make factories more efficient.

I used to have part 1 but never got around to playing it before I lost the discs. If I haven't really played part 1 is the missing mechanic noticeable with playing Part 2? Its not like some game breaker right?

I don't recall it even being missing.

The mechanic in question is, I believe, where if you surround a production facility [mass extractor, land factory, etc] with power production, it enhances the efficiency of the production facility a bit.

How much depended on the tech level of the power production, the tech level of the production facility, and how much was in contact with the production facility.

But my memory, which may be wrong, it telling me that it was in 2, but maybe didn't have the visual connections between the power production and the factory.

If you never played 1, it's not a big deal to not have it in 2, but it was an extra tactic that you could use [and possibly still can. Might try a quick round tonight to double check, but that's only because this has piqued my interest - I have too much settlement building in Fallout 4 to be away from that for too long.

Diablo and Path Of Excile are two widely different games, but both are good in their own way. Except for Diablo 3 witch was horrid

It doesn't break the game, but Adjacency Bonuses did open up new strategies, and added a bit of depth.
They also changed how building works; before you can start construction at any time, and it would slowly drain your resources by a certain amount, meaning that you had to balance income and usage.
In supcom 2 that doesn't happen; it only constructs when you have the required resources, you can never go in the red. I thought the old system was more interesting.
You can no longer assist in building structures either, which sucks.

There's no tier either; everything has been simplified with a blanket research system.
The research system is ok I guess, but I felt more confortable with the tiers; you do some pretty insane stuff with Tier 3 extractors and high tier shield generators.

Overall, the scale feels smaller to me, which is not how supcom should be.

SupCom2 lost me by turning the Illuminate into a faction with ridiculously-named units. I didn't even bother installing the game after reading the manual and seeing it; it was simply an instant, irreparable turn-off.

Oh, and 'Cybranosaurus Rex'? Fething really?!

Yeah, that too.
Everything felt wrong. Like they tried designing it for a younger audience or something.

I don't want to say they dumbed it down, as that phrase is used way too often concerning changes to mechanics...but they dumbed it down.

I was playing Borderlands 2, which I enjoyed until I got to the Bunker bot in "Where angels fear to tread". Whomever thought that was appropriate for a single level 24 player should be fired and never given a job anywhere again.

Can you elaborate? Maybe I just haven't gone further enough into the game to see the differences?

Gave Sunless Sea a go on the free weekend at the suggestion of a friend of mine. Very interesting roguelike so far and might pick it up if it goes on sale for less.

Also tried giving Deus Ex a go, but the game's incredibly dark. Like, literally dark. I can't really see a thing that's going on.

Personally he was just being terrible.

PoE and Diablo, on the surface play similarly: top down, 3rd person hack/slash type game with skills....

From there, EVERYTHING is different. If you've played both, you undoubtedly know the leveling systems are vastly different, and in PoE your skills are largely determined by socketed gems. This opens up significant variations in play style between classes, etc.

Personally, I think Diablo 3 is a good game. While I don't really "like" the season/drop system they've gone with, it works for them. Unless there's some expansion for PoE that I don't know about, I personally felt that the game was a bit too short.
