Incubi armour: basecoat of Shining Gold (not sure what the new name is, but it's the darker of the golds) [I actually had to do a couple of layers to get a nice flat base], then two washes of Gryphs Sepia (only one for the helm), then three or four washes o Badab Black, letting each layer dry before putting the next one on. Can't remember how many layers it was, but you'll see for yourself if you give it a go.
Then a drybrush of Shining Gold and that's pretty much it : )

more work done on the Bonesinger today - I've been a painting machine! (accompanied by thunderstorms - so cool)

All of the yellow done - I redid the under-robe too as I wasn't happy with it. Started on the armour highlighting - nice thin washes of Scab Red. Most of it done, just parts of the back, helm and the antler/wing thigies to do. Then I'll go in and do a further highlight of Blood red.
Sash done in Charadon Granite and then with a red wash - not wholly convinced yet, but I'll wait until the highlights start to go on; it's going to be a fairly strong red (I think...).

Bonesinger done! (Although, obviously, now that I've taken the shots, I can see bits that I'd like to go back and redo!)
Not too bad considering my sore back and it was a fairly quick job.
As requested, there's a group shot as well - and lurking in the background is the Wraithseer, which I started again on today - I restarted the blade, giving it a basecoat of Skink Blue (yes, I know it's a drybrush pigment, but it's a beautiful colour, and when you water it down lots, it works fine as a 'normal' paint), then doing the white, and then layering back to the darker shades with Temple Guard Blue, Hawks Turquoise and a bit of Necron Abyss. It works much better and with less pain than starting from Necron Abyss and just going through the light shades to white.
(also, with the 'seer in the background, I realise what a beast of a model he is!)
As ever, thank you very much for the kind words and feedback
enjoy!

glad you're liking it : ) I just figured that the wraithbone on their armour had been shaped to look like literal bone, but the raw stuff the 'singer was shaping could be a bit different... and the obvious choice was blue what with colour theory and all. ... okay, so what I should be doing is focusing on either another Golden Demon entry, or something for the Store painting competition. What I'm actually doing is feeling the Eldar love and starting three Warlocks to go with my Farseer. I should feel guilty, I know I should. But I don't ; )

I'll be following the style of my Craftworld colours and do them in yellow and black/dark red. I think at the moment, because they're 'ard Warlocks, they'll mostly be back, with yellow trimmings/accents, but we'll see how I go - I generally don't plan out my miniatures out in advance but kind of go with the flow and see what happens instead - believe it or not, that's what happened with the Wardancer's tattoos, I didn't have anything planned and just made it up as I went along. Seems to work fairly well as a planning technique lol

Forewarned is forearmed as we say at work.

On the upside of dealing with badly warped Falcons, I got really good as smooting out plastics with fine sandpaper and reshaping contours with a sharp hobby blade. Those skills would have gone untrained without those kits...

Much like if it weren't for horribly miscast Wracks many hobbyists would be getting hardly any opportunity to practice with Green stuff or shaped needle files. It's supposed to take 12 hours to prep a model for assembly right?

Post by: finnan

I too hate the mold lines on Eldar, there's no escaping them and they're pretty unforgiving if they're ignored. Needle file is the best thing I've used, but even my patience has its limits lol
Never actually tackled a Falcon, so haven't come across warping there myself, but it'll have to be done eventually... as for Finecast cleaning up, I've done my best to avoid that horror too, but liquid greenstuff is amazing! : )

Excellent. Keep the visual treats incoming my good sir.

As for the Liquid GS, I bought a pot on the weekend and will be trying it on some Grotesques now that they're mostly done. Any tips?

Eldar (mostly) WIP - Tonight Pinky, we take over the world!! @ 2012/04/18 16:36:42

Post by: finnan

Liquid Greenstuff - it's pretty thick and gloopy straight out of the pot, so I wouldn't really try using it like that, I put a blob on a palette and water it down a little so it's more manageable. and then paint it onto where it's needed. Seems to dry pretty quick, but if you're filling bigger gaps/holes there can be some shrinkage so multiple layers might be needed.
I think it's great, much more manageable for filling/repairs than solid GS, but I can see that both products fill their purposes : )

How...

Just how...

How do you keep it all so smooth finnan? I'm really struggling with purples lately, my models always seem so rough - lack a lack of definition? Paints are watered down 1:1, always. I'd gladly appreciate some tips!

Eldar (mostly) WIP - Tonight Pinky, we take over the world!! @ 2012/04/18 17:27:45

Post by: finnan

I generally water my paints down at least 1:3 paint:water, and do lots and lots and lots of thin layers. It takes a while, but it does give really nice smooth, intense colour. It's just quite hard to get nice smooth finishes with any paint really in just one go - to get good coverage and colour, you have a use it thick, but that might hide any sculpted detail, and as soon as you water it down, the pigment is more spread out and you won't get the coverage.

Reds and purples are a bit tricky really - you'd think that they give good coverage, but I've always found red to be a fairly 'thin' pigment, in whatever kind of paints that I've used, the same with purple... I guess it also depends on the basecoat - if it's quite dark, it'll be an even harder/longer job to get it up to the brightness that you want.

I now not everyone has the patience or time to paint using the techniques that I use, but they do give good results as long as you don't go bonkers after layer 30... ; ) lol

Eldar (mostly) WIP - Tonight Pinky, we take over the world!! @ 2012/04/18 17:47:34

Post by: Eiríkr

I understand the process in using incredibly thin paints and multiple layers, I guess I've just never considered actually going further than 1:1 // 2:1 mixtures.

Would you recommend any particular procedure for purple? I'm currently priming in black, then basing in hormagaunt purple and then applying two layers of thinned purple-mix. Sadly, I still don't get the crisp and punchy effect I'm after. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and try incredibly thin layers, I have all evening.

[Sorry for hijacking, if you consider this so! I love your painting so eh, makes sense to ask for advice right?]

Eldar (mostly) WIP - Tonight Pinky, we take over the world!! @ 2012/04/18 18:54:02

Post by: finnan

it's not a problem at all : )
Is this for your Chaos stuff, or for something else?

crisp purple... kinda tricky as it's a fairly dark colour, but I guess that the way to get around that is to start with a dark basecoat, and then you'll have the contrast between the base and the Hormagaunt.
You've got a couple of options (in my crazed head anyway lol):
1) you could treat the black undercoat as your BASEcoat, and then go straight in with thinned Hormagaut as your main colour/highlight, leaving the black as the shadows, and then a further (lighter shade) highlight to make the Hormagaunt pop.
2) Undercoat with Charadon Granite (my favourite, I know, but it does give a great base), wash the whole lot with purple wash, then straight in with Hormagaunt purple as your first highlight. The bonus to this method is that you're getting your deep shadows with the Charadon and the wash, and a second hit of purple with the Hormagaunt.
3) Undercoat white so you're already starting with a lighter base, so that the paints will simply be brighter because of that. Basecoat with the darkest purple you have or even a really dark blue like Necron Abyss, and then start highlighting with Hormagaunts.

I think I've talked to Hangfire about this, but not sure I have on my main blog: one of the reasons my stuff looks so bright is that I highlight using colour rather than just adding white in the GW style. Adding white just makes it go a bit pastelly and washed out. By using colour, things tend to be brighter. For example, use a base of dark blue or purple, which will give you depth (rather than just black), then highlight in a brighter shade of purple, and then a final highlight of even brighter purple... Take my Eldar: I base with orange, then highlight with yellow rather than orange + white, this makes both colours stronger... I don't think I'm explaining myself very well there, hope that makes sense!

Thank you so very much finnan.

Yes, it is for the Emperor's Children link in my signature. After three months of toying with various hues and applications of purples, I am still being defeated! I think much of it lies in misapplication and technique, rather than colour choice. I'm aiming for a very royal purple, something lordly that will pop nicely with bronze and gold trim, as well as green for the contrast. I've been using my own mix of vallejo purples, although I now wonder why since they run their own shade named Royal Purple. /facepalm

Since writing to you a couple of hours back, I've grabbed a spare Marine and primed black then applied four very thin layers of said colour. Looks OK thus far! Would you recommend a wash over the top? You mention "leaving the black as the shadows", I assume you're suggesting leaving a minute line of undercoat in the shadows, as opposed to applying any form of wash?

Eldar (mostly) WIP - Tonight Pinky, we take over the world!! @ 2012/04/18 19:51:58

Post by: finnan

I'm trying to shy away from washes at the moment, just because they tend to be a bit blobby when they dry and I end up spending time tidying it up... having said that, I am a fan of the technique to add colour. If you were going to highlight first then wash, I'd say to highlight in a lighter/brighter colour first, because the wash will knock the colour back somewhat.

... also, if you're going for rich/royal, maybe go for redder purples rather than bluer purples, but don't mix them, as that might make the combination of paints a bit duller.
Yeah, if you're undercoating black and then using that as your basecoat as well, I wouldn't cover it entirely, leave some of the black exposed as the darkest shadows.

another technique you might want to try is: undercoat white, then do a black wash to give yourself some shadows and then once that's dry, do a thin-ish, even coat of a strong purple over the top, so you can still see the black wash underneath, and then all you need to is to a fairly small highlight over the top : )

hey Krell
Skin - I actually wasn't amazingly happy with the skin, I thought it should be a bit lighter, but I was rushing it a bit to get it done.

I just followed the GW recipe (which seems a bit overdone really): basecoat of Dark Flesh, a washo or Ogryn Flesh, then a first highlight (major) of Dwarf flesh, leaving a bit of the Dark Flesh showing as shadows, and then a final highlight of Elf Flesh. I think I should have done a heavier Elf Flesh highlight...

I might try just a base of Dwarf, then a wash of Ogryn's, rehighlight with Dwarf and then Elf next time...

Warlock progress, from last night and tonight.
... to be honest, I thought that they'd be looking a bit better than they do now! (but perhaps that's slightly high expectations of myself. I thought that the yellow would be easier and quicker to go on... why I thought this I have no idea, considering the amount of yellow onto orange I've been doing lately. Maybe I'm just blanking it from my memory!)
I've only started on the robes on the 'lock on the right, and I want them to be brighter than that, so I'll do some more tomorrow and do a further highlight to make it stand out. The plan is to have double stripes (like on the Wraithseer) on hems and sleeves, and the rest of the robes to be black. It might be that the yellow isn't standing out too well against the white.
I've also re-undercoated the topknot on the middle one - I did some drybrushing on it and that just reminded me why I don't like drybrushing - it looked clumpy and dry, so I'll try again with it...
Also the lenses done, and that's about it... I feel as if I should have achieved more!

doing the red on the Charadon is pretty quick to do - the Scab Red goes on really well, even when it's thinned down. The yellow seemed to take ages this time (but probably no quicker/longer than usual!).
Blending god? Not sure about that ; )
Like I said at the top of the page, I SHOULD be going my last entry for the Store Competition next week... but I'm just having fun with the Eldar at the moment... so I've decided to cheat somewhat and enter a model that I've mostly already done rather than do one from scratch, simply because I think I'll run out of time otherwise

Grimdark, yes, but with an element of hope...
My crazed backround fluff has these guys hailing form Craftworld Saertha-Fael, which means 'Phoenix-Rising' (and is a contraction of "firebird rising" in Welsh). They recognise the darkness of the current situation for the Eldar, but hope that the ember of their race can be rekindled and their strength return, tempered by the discipline of the Path system.

I've been thinking about the grav tanks, but haven't come up with a definitive design yet. The Guardians I think are going to be: black/red base with yellow faceplate, shoulder pads, chest, forearms and kneepads : )

I also now reek of Dettol as I stripped a Wraithlord, the WraithWalker and a Vyper today - all three were in various states of incompletion, so they've been stripped and are now ready for the craftworld colours (I fancy having multiple, go-faster stripes on the WraithWalker lol). I also may have purchased the Eldar Army box on Ebay... oops...

@Vitruvian: well, you know, I thought it was time to get an avatar, and I was jealous of all you guys ; )
(although I was momentarily confused at your comment... "I've already painted the Avatar last year" went through my head... d'oh!)

@Coyote: thank you very much, although from my point of view, until I hold a Golden Demon in my grubby, paint-stained hands, I will always think that my stuff's not quite good enough yet! ; )

I love the scheme you've got going with your Eldar. Bright contrasts, great blends and how solid the colours are. They'll definately stand out at a GD. Are the warlocks and farseer going to be a squad entry?

I'll have to add the progressive glazing to the list of things i want to try. I'm finding it hard to pick a model i like the most from you... Which is your favourite?

I was chatting to The Beloved yesterday about the possibility of them being a squad for Golden Demon... Are they a proper, legal squad? I'm a bit hesitant to enter them as a squad because there's no champion or standard bearer, and that's what the look for in squads... The plan was for the Farseer to be my 40k single miniature.

My favourite... hmm, tough one. I think it'd have to be between my Avatar (which I finally fixed the other day), the Wraithseer or the Farseer... Avater because it was such a big job and he turned out so well. Wraithseer because it's a conversion on top of a solid paint job, and the Farseer just rocks and has some freehand on him too...
I'm going to go for the Farseer : )

Thank you all for looking at my blog, and I hope you're enjoying what you read and see.

I did some work on Warlock 2 last night, and even though it felt like I was working on him for ages, I got remarkably little done. He's okay, but not great, but I'll see what he's like when everything's finished.

Second Warlock finished. He's okay, but not great - I was rushing him towards the end and didn't really put as much attention into him as I did on the first 'lock.
As I said, the Army Box arrived today, and I've already started to put together the Autarch (and convert him slightly), so I'll put shots of him up when he's all together.

If you want to enter them as a squad, the game legal is Farseer and 3-10 Warlocks IIRC

It's the limited edition army box, so yes, there was an Autarch in there. He's now got a fusion gun and I replaced the banner poles as I don't like the banners he comes with. I'll be using Wood Elf banners as the replacements. Slightly traumatic getting the arms stuck on (super glue is rubbish!), so he's being left to dry today.

A little bit of work done on Warlock 3 tonight, just his robes gone over with the first highlight of Scab Red... not too sure how they'll come out in the shot, I suspect a little dark [yeah, they are - you can just about see the highlight... you get the idea].
And: here's the Autarch : )
Banner poles aren't the strongest join in the world, so I anticipate transport issues, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. WElf banners aren't looking too bad, and certainly better than the stiff-as-a-board banners he had before. There's still a bit of cleaning up to do on him (I can see it a bit clearer now that he's undercoated, another reason I prefer to undercoat in white rather than black), but then it'll be onwards with the yellows : )
I'm thinking at the moment: yellow faceplate, topknot, cloak, sash and top banners. Dark red/Charadon for the rest. Not too sure about weapons as yet.

@DijnsK - thought I'd get to the blade tonight, but not quite there. Rather than just write up the recipe for the sword blades, I thought I'd take shots of what I do at each stage so that it makes more sense, so apologies for that, but I'll get it all up on here either tomorrow or Sunday.
All three of my entries for the GW Store painting competition have been packed up and are ready to go for tomorrow... and I'm strangely nervous about it, perhaps because of my experience with Golden Demon last year perhaps, not sure. The plan is to drop off the miniatures at the store first thing tomorrow morning and then go back for the judging/announcement at 1:30/2:00pm, so i'll let you know how I do! (part of me thinks that if I can't even place in a store competition, I don't have very much hope with Golden Demon...)

I don't think you've got anything to worry about unless there is some serious other talent at your local store =)

One thing with warlock number 2.... i think the robe highlights on his right knee could do with being a little brighter. If you look at your group pic, and compare him to the Farseer.... You could also paint the pouch on his belt orange. Maybe that would balance orange to black more with the other 2.

Also the eyes from warlock 1 and 2 are pretty drastically different. Not sure if this was the aim or not.

Are the bases finished? Are you going to add a bit more to them, or some pigments or such? For me they dont quite add up to the effort you have put into the actual models, which is ALOT. Not trying to pick holes... just sharing my view (which is aimed to be helpful) =D

I agree that the eyes on Warlock 1 do rock, especially compared to the other two. I wanted to have different colours on each of them, but I don't think it works too well. I can certainly go and change them, that's a fairly quick job.

Yeah, the bases are finished, but they do show poorly in the shots. They're better when you can see more of them, but again, maybe I should think about another option for them... : )

On the other hand, the 'locks are just a fun little project at the moment - I know that I'm not putting in anywhere near as much time into them as the Farseer, so I should be thankful that they don't look as if I've painted them with a blunt stick! lol As I said a few posts ago, I SHOULD be concentrating on another Golden Demon entry... but I'm not and I'm fine with that : ) lol

Automatically Appended Next Post:
eyes changed on Warlocks 2 and 3 : ) Not quite as bright as on 'lock 1, but they're significantly smaller too, so they do lack some punch because of that. Gold hilt and the gems done on 'lock3s sword too, so I'm ready to start doing the blade, so tutorial to come!
However, it's also time to head into town (and maybe have a cooked breakfast... lol) with my entries for the competition!

...and the results are in:
I won the Lord of the Rings category with my Cirdan and the 40k category with the Bonesinger - yey me!
I put my entries in at about 10am, and when I went back at 1:30pm, there was a grand total of four entries - somewhat anti-climactic, but there you go. Another two entries were added at the last minute from someone who was playing a game with them, and they got the Fantasy prize (even though my Wardancer was better lol).
All in all, I'm pleased with the result; the models are still in the store so they can be on display for a while, so I'll probably collect them next week. : )

Right - I'll chuck in a dvd and get on with this sword, so updates later

Sword recipe:
basecoat of Skink Blue - yes it's a drybrush paint, but thin it down and it's a lovely general paint, nice and bright. It might take a couple of layers depending on how much water was added, but it's fairly quick.

Highlighting with white: I used Ceramite here, but I can't really tell that much difference between it and Skull White to be honest. I thinned it down at least 1:5 paint:water. To get it to the stage in the photo, it took 35 layers. Now, before you have a heart attack, to do 35 layers took 5 minutes. Because the paint's so thin and because I put it on in thin layers, it dries almost immediately so it doesn't take long to build up all those layers : )
I started the white half way up the blade and did a stroke towards the tip where the white was going to be the most solid.

Next I added some Temple Guard Blue to just deepen the blue up a bit. You could probably skip this step as there's not a huge difference between the Temple Guard and the Skink, but it just helps keep a smooth transition going. I did the Temple Guard in the last quarter of the blade, again aiming towards where I wanted the blue to be strongest.

Last in was a couple of layers of Hawks Turquoise (Sotek Blue in the new paints) right at the tip to again deepen the colour up, and that's it : )

Hope that helps. The shots aren't great, but you can see the change in each one.

All three Warlocks done - yey : )
I'm really quite pleased at how they've come out, especially considering how quickly I've done them, and how they fit into my Craftworld colour scheme. Absolutely awful shot of them with the Farseer - the joys of Macro setting... I'll see if I can't get a better shot of them tomorrow.
Already made a start on the Autarch with some blocking in of orange on the fabric areas + a wash of yellow to really give it some grunt. Also now starting to think of Rangers (and having them blending into the bases somehow... ) and of Harlequins...

Wow, I know you have a slow method for painting Finnan, but it's absolutely justified when I see this calibre of miniatures grace Dakka, you have such an interesting style that is both subtle yet makes a really big impact when you take the time to 'really' look at what you've achieved, as said probably a hundred times in your thread, but your blending is phenomenal! your colour choices are spot on and different to the normal craft worlds/chapters/etc.. every update brings something fresh to our tables!

thank you.

Eldar (mostly) WIP - Tonight Pinky, we take over the world!! @ 2012/04/29 18:23:53

Post by: finnan

thank you very much for your kind words nerfest : ) I think it's a perception issue more than anything else - I tend to assume, with my painting and my drawing, that everyone else can do what I do. As much as I say it's a matter of practice, I also know it's to do with talent, something which I just don't think about very much, but which I am very grateful for, and I think I should probably be aware of that a little more than I am.

Anyway, enough self reflection! Today's offering, and a little bit of a break from all that orange and yellow, the first of my Rangers. A bit of fun as well as a test-model really, and, as you know *really* quick for me. He's come out okay, if not great. I wanted his cloak to be blending in with the rocky base, and I did a bit of drybrushing on it - as always, I'm not a huge fan of it, so I think next time I'll stick to blending the highlights instead.
I figured that the Craftworld red for his armour might stick out a little too much if they're trying to be stealthy, so I went for green instead. Usual thinning and blending of Dark Angels Green over my usual Charadon base. The a highlight of Scorpion Green on top of that - I think I could probably do a stronger highlight that I have.
I stuck with the Craftworld faceplate, what of it is on show, and basic Burnished Gold with a couple of washes of black for the rifle (which I think I'll do differently next time). so all in all, okay for a quick job : ) enjoy

Post by: Moltar

Ranger looks good, but I actually think he would look great in the deep red that you have done the previous robes in. Maybe lose the orange trim on the robes for a little more "stealth." I don't know. Obviously my opinion is personal taste and shouldn't sway your hand, I just don't think that green and grey will compliment the rest of your Eldar as well as another scheme could. He does look good for a test mini, though and I do like the little orange helm peaking out.

Eldar (mostly) WIP - Tonight Pinky, we take over the world!! @ 2012/04/29 21:02:31

Post by: finnan

i'm kind of figuring that the Rangers have to be a bit more independent of the Craftworld in order to do what they do, so it doesn't matter quite so much that they're not in complete Craftworld colours... the red and the gold would certainly work well together (I'm thinking gold for shooty weaponry on whatever warriors I do...?). I could certainly give the red a try.
The great debate is on! Stick to the red or go with the green?

I also ordered some .5mm masking tape the other day, thinking that I could use it to mask off some diamonds on the Harlequins - tried it on the 54mm Ranger today, and even .5mm looked massively chunky! So either I do a diamond pattern by hand (not something that I relish doing), or go for Plan B, which is to try and make the Harlequins look as if they're wearing iridescent fabric and armour... here's a hint: I'm leaning towards Plan B lol

Personally I think the green.

As the rangers are a stealthy squad I imagine them to be hiding in undergrowth, bushes ect...
Plus the way you have done your paintwork, this could be futuristic camouflage, sort of chameleon/ predator like.

And you have the faceplate to unify it with your craftworld.

I vote green.

P.S love the paintwork!!

okay, so not the best photos in the world, so try clicking on them to get the bigger versions up. A little work done on the Autarch last night, but not enough to take shots of, and I just based and undercoated the next Ranger. What I did work on was a Harlequin. I was aiming for iridescence, and I've kinda done it, but in another way from the one I was intending!

I wanted a bright, shiny blue by going from a dark to light blue quite quickly. What I did instead was get something more like a magpie's wing, by going from dark purple, to dark blue to turquoise to light green. The shots really don't do it justice - the colours are stronger than they appear. I'm actually quite pleased with it, even if it is quite subtle. I plan on doing the areas I left white in shades of bright blue, so I anticipate that the iridescence will drop out quite a lot. I'll have to give the brighter version a go on the next Harlequin. I've just done the kneepad and thigh so far, and I did the rest of his torso and limbs in the purple tonight.

definitely rubbish shots - click on them and zoom in to get a better look.

yeah, the iridescence is subtle, so I'm a bit concerned about it dropping out with the brighter colours, but I'll just have to see what happens with it. The plan is to do a squad; i received a box of Harlequins today, so I've got them and the old ones I already had. Got my eye on a Shadowseer on Ebay and that'll round them out nicely. I still have in my head that when in battle the Harlequins will be dark, shadowy ninja-type Eldar, and won't be over the top colourful. We'll see what I come up with : )

Finnan i'm really impressed with how much you've done since i checked this blog last, the quality here is always astounding. I really wanted to thank you for putting up that harlequin picture though. I have been trying really hard to get that exact magpie effect, (oddly i've been coming up with something that sounds like what you were aiming for with the shiney blue.) Do you have any tips as to how you got it? I will be following your description, but any extra tips would be great.

thank you J-paint : )
i did some more work on the Harlequin last night (but not much!), and I think what I need to do is overshoot on the highlighting - do more purple so that when I go over it with the blue, there's more left showing, and the same with the blue so that all the colours have room to be seen, otherwise the areas that you have to paint is just too small to work with.

some more work done on the Harlequin, and I'm pretty pleased with him, although the shots are rubbish and you can't really see the highlighting - I suspect it's because it's pretty minimal and dark highlighting more than anything else though. I redid his lapels - I used Skink blue as a bas to start off with, but it was too bright and a cold blue rather than a warm blue, so I did it darker and it's working much better.
Still to do: gold buckles need highlighting, just based and washed at the moment. Then it's belt and crotch, backpack and gear - I think I'm just going to give them a highlight of dark-ish blue as I don't really want them standing out too much. That'd leave the belt gem and weapons left to do. I should (hopefully!) be able to get that all done today : )

Harlequin (first of many with any luck!) done, although I can see where I need to do a bit of tidying up on his sword.
Onto the next ranger before back to the Autarch I think.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Red Ranger almost done, and he's looking pretty slick and bad-@$$ lol I'm surprised at how well it works, so maybe the rest of the squad can be a mix of the green and red suits...

finished red ranger and progress on the Autarch. I was fairly happy with him this morning, but from the shots, i'm going to go back and beef up the yellow on his cloak, it's too orange at the moment. I think I'll probably go back to the ranger and wash his rifle with some black as well.

Red Ranger, Green Ranger........... Just blue, yellow and pink to go and you could make the power rangers!!

I'm always amazed when I come to your thread with the quality of painting.

A quick question about your paints, do you use citadel paints or another brand or a mixture for your first layer??
I'm just starting out painting and was wondering if you used a base paint first before you do the layering after you have primed the models??
I'm just practising base paints on a few models just now till I'm confident to try layering and was wondering how you did it.

Cheers

A black wash for the ranger's rifle seems like the best thing for it. The red robes are nice (perfectly painted, as normal) but the green seems to fit the scheme of the rangers better. The autarch is awesome, simply put. More yellow in the robes would be nice, but I think it's fine as it is.

Are you going to go over the gun of the red ranger with some wash or shadowing?

Eldar (mostly) WIP - Tonight Pinky, we take over the world!! @ 2012/05/08 05:22:44

Post by: finnan

Red ranger gun - definitely needs a black wash. I thought that the Green Ranger gun was too dark, but in comparison is just right, so I'll go back and do that, hopefully tonight.
lol I was thinking about the whole Power Ranger thing with the colours, but can't bring myself to do a pink ranger ; )

Coyote: I just use Citadel paints; I have go a couple of paints from other ranges, but I rarely use them. I've always been really happy with Citadel paints, even using them in various graphics projects at Uni when I hadn't touched a miniature in years : )
I generally always water them down though, although when basing, it's usually only 1:1 paint:water, just to get a nice smooth coat.

The Autarch has had more yellow on him and more highlights, so he's cool now, and I blocked in most of the Charadon Granite, although I did also manage to drop him and one of his banner poles fell off, so a bit of emergency gluing was needed there ; )

what I've been up to:
A little work done on the Autarch - the Charadon Granite (more on than shortly) has been blocked in and washed with black, so he's ready to go for red highlighting.

Death Jester: I'd already started this guy a long time ago it seems now, so I stripped him to start again. I kind of enjoy stripping miniatures, it's therapeutic lol However, there's always little bits of paint that you can't quite get out, so some definition is lost, and there's a bit of that going on with him. Nothing too serious, but I can tell (and it bugs me lol). The bone areas have been washed with some Gryph's Sepia, and then the rest given an undercoat of Charadon and washed with black. I've started to highlight it all up with red - one of the new ones, Mephiston Red, which is darker than Blood red, so I'll go in with that as the next highlight after it's all done. I went with Mephiston because I wanted him to look a little different to my Craftworld guys.

Harlequin 2: no tricky iridescence on this one (yet)...

I wanted to use Kabalite as the base for his coat, then Sybarite as a main highlight and then Hellion as the final highlight. Nothing could be simpler, right? After all, they're the new GW products, and they're designed to work with each other. Piece of cake.
Wrong.
I haven't had to work as hard with some highlighting in a long time, and what highlighting I got was pasty and washed out. I've said before that the GW aesthetic is to just add white to everything and that's their highlighting, and these paints prove my point. It didn't look terrible, but it certainly didn't look up to my standard, nor did it look like my usual work. I'm still a fan of the paints, I think used well, they give you good results, but I think using them in the Step 1, Step 2, Step 3 way GW obviously want everyone to will not give great results.
So, seeing the horror that was the highlighting, I decided to stop and go back to how I'd usually do things. My mid-level highlight was Scorpion Green, and once that layer was on, it immediately looked better. Top highlight was 1:1 Scorpion Green and Sunburst Yellow.
The grey...

I love Charadon Granite, you know I do, but I realise that it doesn't exist anymore, so I'll move on. I bought one of the new greys this morning. I'm not even going to say which one because it's rubbish.
Okay, maybe it's not rubbish, but Charadon it is not. Not a very warm tone and it went on in a very patchy way. Not impressed. Looks okay, but not as dark with a wash of black.
I've promptly ordered two pots of Charadon from an online shop.
So... crappy grey base, black wash. For the Mohawk I drybrushed Liche Purple, then Necron Abyss, then Hawks Turquoise and then a bit of Scorpion Green.
i still haven't quite decided what I'm going to do on the rest of him. I'm considering a nice bright reddy-purple for one of the sashes, perhaps the face one, just for some contrast... not sure.

Second Harlequin finished and a little bit of progress done on the Death Jester. Not been feeling terribly great lately, so I haven't really been in the mood for painting, but I wanted to get this one done. I feel as if I dropped the ball a bit on the green 'quin, I just didn't take the time to highlight as well as I could, and I think it shows when he's next to the blue one. But there you go, some are going to be better than others. I'd also like to blame an old curse of mine: I just can't do greens very well. Don't know why, but I've always found them quite tricky to do. Blues, yellows and reds I can do in my sleep, but greens, no. more practice needed, clearly.
I was obviously feeling in a Hunger Games mood when working on the Jester - trying to make his coat burn a little ; )

time to get back on the Golden Demon pony as well I think - doing these guys has been fun, but isn't helping me get more entries done. I undercoated my 54mm ranger today, so I'll start working on him for the over-sized category. I'm thinking more iridescent cloth...

Im digging the green harlequin and the blue, and the jester. in fact all your work on this blog. Very inspiring to starters just like me!!

How do you get all you cloth/cloaks looking so natural without any layering/highlighting lines?? Is it just lots of layers with very thin paint??

Eldar (mostly) WIP - Tonight Pinky, we take over the world!! @ 2012/05/20 20:24:29

yeah, lots and lots of thin layers does the trick - I generally thin my paint down a lot, 1:4 or 1:5 paint:water.

I did some more work on the 54 ranger tonight - I'll try and get a shot up tomorrow.

I haven't even started doing the face yet really! lol That's just a white undercoat and a couple of layers of Gryph's Sepia. I'll highlight it up to white to have it nice, stark, polished bone... that's the plan anyway! ; )

a bit of work done on the ranger last night and tonight. Same as with the blue Harlequin, the colours don't show up on the shots as well as they do in the flesh, not really sure why.
Only the back of his coat really started, and his sash basecoated and washed, ready for highlighting up to yellow; I need to do a bit of tidying up with Charadon before I start the yellow.
His coat: Charadon basecoat, and then a wash of black. Then Liche purple, Necron Abyss, Hawks turquiose and Scorpion green, all in thin layers and covering less and less in area with each colour.

Maybe try using a long exposure time or getting a light-box for the pictures? That should help delicate effects like this one be more visible on pictures, I think. Lovely magpie look you've got going there, really special .

Lightbox would probably help - I'll have to 'borrow' one from work ; )

... so I'm seeing a pattern forming: periods of fairly intense painting followed by a time of nothing at all from me lol Even I recognise that I need to a bit more regular with my postings, so apologies for that.

It's half term, so with any luck I should be able to get some decent painting done. Not a whole lot done in the last week or so as I've been absolutely shattered from work. I know I always say that, but it does take its toll.

So, what's on the workbench?
Foolishly I've started Irillyth (and some Spectres), and in my head, this is going to be my 40k squad entry, but I'm already wondering if I'll have time to do them all (to the standard I want) in time. They're beautiful models, but damn they're tricky to paint! I think I'd rather take my time on all of them and have something I'm happy with than rush to get them done for Golden Demon (still haven't bought my Games Day ticket yet... ). I have three entries already: The Farseer, the Wraithseer, and my finished Cirdan, so it's not as if I won't be flying the flag.
The plan is to have his armour white - you can see that I've made a start on his foot. His sashes/ribbons I want to be white as well, but a different white lol. The gold is so I can have some gold bands/stripes along the bottom to tie them into my craftworld scheme. I need to go in and retouch the gold on his shoulders and chest. He's going to be a bit of a mission! I also learned my lesson with the Farseer and the Autarch and I'm painting him unassembled - there'd be no way I could get into all those nooks and crannies if I'd fully assembled him.

Next up: the Autarch. A little bit of work on him this morning to get me warmed up. I've just started on his armour, so a long way to go yet, and I spotted some bits that need retouching (already!!).

Finally, the Ranger. I did this a few days ago actually, but couldn't get decent shots of it. His coat's done (looks better in the flesh, you can see the darker tones more clearly), his loincloth is done and I've made a start on his robe. Again, I can see a couple of spots where I want to go and smooth things out a bit.
I've also started his armour - that's just Mephiston Red over the Charadon base, and it's a bit brighter than usual, which I like. I put a glaze of Bloodletter in the bottom centre part just to see what would happen and it's made it go a bit shiny, so I'll go and knock that back with some more Mephiston later.
I was having my doubts about the Ranger, but now I have a bit more energy in me, I'm liking him again - he does look a bit flat at the moment due to all the black/Charadon. Hopefully that'll go when I get more areas done.

enjoy : )

A bit of work done on Irillyth - slowly working my way up his legs. I'm liking how he's going so far, although the tricky thing with white is that you can never quite tell when you've gotten to WHITE, so it can be quite slow, especially on the smaller areas, but I'll get there : )

@DijnsK - the Ranger is part of the Inquisition range form GW, you should be able to find him in the Specialist Games section of their website. Irillyth is from Forgeworld.

@Hang - the triangles I did another horizontal line and then did Vs going up... horrendously explained there... yeah, just freehand basically and lots of judging distance!

only a little update really as I've spent most of the day watching the Glee Project... yes, I know, my Have A Life Factor was fairly low to start off with and basically plummeted with that admission, but what the hell ; )

Irillyth's three main sashes tidied up and basecoated ready to be highlighted up to white. This is my new favourite: Skink Blue. I needed to retouch some of the gold, so I'll have to carefully do some washes to deepen the colour.
After doing the triangles on the front sash, I didn't really want to do them on the other two as I think it would have been a bit too much, but it looked a bit odd with them, and I was tempted to paint them out, but after a bit of thought I decided to do more instead, so a swift rendition of the Shadow Spectres icon was added, and I'm liking it : ) I'm kind of tempted to do some more patterning above the icon, but I think this is a good time to stop, just in case I cock it up! (I can also see where I need to go and tidy up the triangles a bit too)

Subscribed and Exalted!!! Really beautiful orange on the autarch, absolutely mouth-watering. And the blue eyes too. And the armour on the Exarch. Argg!!! its all so good!!! As a tip I think you should make the gold on the Exarch's cape a little more coherent, as it really stands out and looks a bit odd but that might be the desired effect. that cloak is tricky on the Autarch - because the folds are quite deep, there's more orange left, especially when compared to the Farseer, which is a lot yellower because it's flatter... just one f those things I think. Autarch done - yey! He's looking fairly good I suppose, but I think he suffers from not having any of the light Skink Blue on him, like the Warlocks and Farseer, but there you go, live and learn. I redid his gems last night too - I originally did them reds and yellows, but it was too flat, so some contrasting blues and greens works much better.
And there we have my craftworld combat leadership. I suppose I should crack on with the Ranger now, but I'm kind of in the mood to knock out a unit to go with these guys now...

He's very nice, but seems a bit plain compared to the rest? The wraithbone and blades of of the warlocks add interesting spot colours - which he seems to lack entirely. Probably just doing elements of the armour a different colour would have helped? Or the weapons? The dark robes on the warlocks makes sense, but on his armour it just seems to be hiding the detail? Maybe just the gem settings in wraithbone would be enough? I would have commented earlier - but I didn't realise you were this close to finished!

I agree - it was just one of those things that happened during the painting process unfortunately. I did want him to be very simple, but I think he's a bit too simple. The problem with the Autarchs that I looked at is that they can very easily become too busy and distracting. It's a fine line, and I don't think I got it with this one. It's also a trickier model than I realised - the cloak covers a lot of detail, and makes some really deep recesses... whinge, moan, excuse after excuse... ; )
Luckily he was just for fun and me being a completionist in terms of army/models, so he's good enough! At least he fits in with the aesthetic, and doesn't look as if he's been painted by a five year old!
Onwards and upwards, and try better next time!

I was thinking about putting something on the back of his cloak, but again, the folds are so deep, it'd look pretty distorted... I'm thinking about changing some of the colours on belts and straps, and maybe change some of the armour to yellow...

Might I suggest that you paint up a guardian, in the same colours (maybe not to the same high standard) and use it as a test model for the yellows or bone colours, that way you can experiment without porentially ruining your amazing paintjob if it is doesnt fit with the unit?

good suggestion there... I've already thought about the colour scheme for the Guardians, and they do have more yellow on them already to get that balance (everything black/red apart from faceplate, chest, shoulder pads, forearms and kneepads).

The tricky thing with this version of the Autarch is that quite a lot of his armour is missing or obscured by the cloak, sash and straps. A (admittedly small!) part of me is almost tempted to strip him and start again from scratch, but I know that would be going over the top.

How my thoughts are running: if I do the shoulder pads yellow, they'd stick out and look a bit odd, so the logical thing would be to make the chest yellow too - like the Guardians... but then there'd be only a little black separating the yellow chest and the sash and it might be too much.
If I did a yellow kneepad, same sort of issues with the cloak and the pad running together.
Yellow arms perhaps, but that might look a bit odd, leading to yellow shoulder pads, then chest... over balanced.
Yellow forearms - simple, easy, but might look a bit odd and out of place.
I'd be tempted to have black undersuit and yellow armour, but you can't see much of the undersuit, and that would break up the strong shape of him.
I could do the cloak black instead of yellow, but that would break with how the craftworld aesthetic is developing.

See my issues? lol (this is where stripping him and starting again comes into play)

I am happy with him (less happy now though!), and I did want him to be fairly dark and deadly... To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the Autarch models generally - I think they're very busy and technically hard to paint because of the folds/recesses and placement of things, and it's very easy for them to get out of control with details and have too many colour on them. I'd rather have him too simple than go the other way. Maybe I'll revisit him at a later date, who knows?

Okay, to keep him dark and brooding?

where the hair meets the elm (topknot) do it dark gold, I think I saw a gem at 90 degrees to the one painted you could do it, dark green as a change from the blue, but it still fits in with the others in the unit.

You also have gems on theshoulders and on on the chest, plus a small bandana on the upper thigh with a gem in it., You could ignore those on the shoulders.

Dark gold bandana with blue gem, possibly also do the melta in the fark gold too to make it look ornate and break up the darker colours a bit, or if you have fire dragons don, match it to theirs maybe??

Possibly the same to the other weapon, some blues nd gold to tie it visually to the others in the unit.... or use yellow for striping/kill markings?

By focussing on th weapons, not the model itself you can bring it more in line with the others without making the main body of the model, overly busy.

Just my thoughts, but it is an awesome model

Don't do it, Finnan!

What about just adding a few bone details? (I feel like this might have come up already, but I couldn't find it)

In all of my MSPaint glory, I give you my ideas:

Still dark and brooding, but not so monotonous...

Anyway: eat the meat, throw out the bone.

hey, I'm liking those bone details - see, many heads think better than one! It always amazes me what people think up that I would NEVER, in a million years have thought of doing - gotta love design collectives!
I'm kinda tempted to do them in yellow for cohesiveness, but I'm liking the bone better I think.

@DijnsK: I'd strip him by soaking him in Dettol (a disinfectant/cleaning fluid - do you have that brand in Holland?), and the paint comes right off - I was really surprised at how well it works the first time I tried it. You just leave the mini to soak for a while and then scrub the paint off with an old toothbrush.

Against what you've been saying, I've loved the Autarch/squad. If you were going to do some different highlights/details, I'd make it that 'ice' blue you're using; I really love the fire/ice clashing awesomeness. I wouldn't use the bone though, (no disrespect to Rawson) as I just think it looks abit dumb...

I do agree with the ice/crystal blue though, but it never actually occurred to me that the tertiary colour was the bone - it's on all the others, as well as the crystal blue. In a way I kinda wish he had a normal power sword, not the chainsword, then I could have done some of the blue...

this is my next dilemma... I have three entries for Golden Demon - do I push on and go for Fantasy single miniature, or a vehicle, or a squad (I honestly don't think I'd get a squad done in time that was up to scratch)... or do I call it a day for this year and crack on with more Eldar? I have more than enough Eldar to get on with and I'm really liking how things are shaping up at the moment. I'd like to get the Harlequins finished as a squad before I go onto anything else, plus there's Irillyth to finish.

Still painting, but I'm taking a little Golden Demon break and just doing stuff for fun at the moment - started the Wraithlord and WraithWalker that have been on my desk for FAR too long, and am doing them in my craftworld colours, so we'll see how they turn out. Already cocked up one of the heads (three hours of work down the drain), but I blame that mostly on how I've been feeling of late. Photos to come shortly : )

okay, modest progress on the Wraithlord and WraithWalker. The plan is to try and keep them at similar stages, so I'll do one leg on one, then the other, an arm on one, then the other and so on. Two legs done so far (well, the base yellow anyway), so highlights to come. As usual, it appears a bit darker in the shots, but they don't have a highlight on the, so they'll brighten up.

Woah, there's a blast from the past. (The past being page 2)

I'm always amazed at what elements of the model you decide to use for the highlight colour. I'd like to quiz your thought process, or is it more of a "what feels right"

For example on the legs of the wraith lord you've gone with the knee and top calf and then the.... heel? How come?

Eldar (mostly) WIP - Tonight Pinky, we take over the world!! @ 2012/07/05 05:20:58

Post by: finnan

... hopefully that's amazed in a semi-good way? >looks worried< ; )

Thought Process of The Finn:
I wanted them in the craftworld colours, so yellow and black was going to feature heavily, and I wanted a balance and a contrast. In my head, I had a couple of choices: mainly yellow with a little black. Mainly black with a little yellow. Or pretty much half and half.
So far, the emphasis has been on mainly black with little bits of yellow, so I decided to stick with that... nothing to do with the sheer pain of having to highlight that much yellow... ; )

I also wanted to do them in a different configurations from the Wraithseer, just to mix it up. So the 'lord's legs are pretty much the opposite of the 'seer's. That doesn't give too much yellow, so I decided to put a sneaky touch - and to balance it somewhat - by doing the heel yellow too, the issue being that if I hadn't, it'd possibly be a bit too dull and boring down there without it. I know I didn't do that on the 'seer, but I wanted the eye to be led up on him - with the 'lord, I want him really solid and grounded. He's in a classic Megatron pose, and he's actually quite top-heavy when the missile launchers go on, so a little touch of yellow will help to balance him visually.

With the WraithWalker, again, I'm almost going for a direct opposite from the 'seer, especially on the arms. His legs are obviously very different in form, so I'm highlighting that by having them *really* stand out. I'm also planning on doing a couple more stripes than usual on his thighs, because everyone knows things go faster with stripes... ; )

Hope that made sense!

Post by: finnan

it seems to dry with a slight grainy texture to it, is *slightly* gloss and while it does get into the nooks and crannies, it doesn't do so well on flatter surfaces (which, let's face it, Eldar tend to have a lot of!).
It sounds silly, as this has probably been said in other blogs/sites, but it's a completely different product to the old washes. Badab Black gave nice shadows and good general coverage, and darkened up things a treat. Nuln oil seems to do well in the recesses, but isn't designed for darkening flatter areas. I know I could have done a couple of layers, but Badab gave me the results I wanted in one coat...

Little bits of progress on the 'Walker - most of the yellow done, just got his head to do, and then whatever weapons are going on his shoulder mounts (although I'm kind of tempted to leave off on the weapons so he looks nice and speedy. Thoughts?). I've also started blocking in the grey and doing some detailing. I'm almost out of Badab Black, so I want to wait until the replacements arrive before I do some serious blocking in with the Charadon.

Also the first Guardian is done - who needs a weapons platform when you have this guy? : )

Wraithlord and WraithWalker: pretty much whatever is white now will be black, and some of the orange too - that was me being over-zealous with the basecoat for the yellow.
The orange darker? Hmmm... hadn't considered that. It's actually darker in the shots than in the flesh, and I haven't put the highlight yellow on yet, so it's going to be lighter in the end.

(the holo-fins on the 'Walker are going to be mostly black - only the tips are going to be yellow)

finnan, I remember you telling me just how thin your layers of paint are. May I ask; how do you avoid any water marks occurring between layers? I've been applying the same technique of very, very watery layers of pain however I sometimes find watermarks. Is this due to too much being applied?

Cheers!

That would be my guess, Eiríkr. Keep a bit of paper towel or tissue nearby and after loading your brush, use it to very lightly draw any excess paint away. Learning how to mix your paints to consistency is step one, loading your brush properly is step two.

finnan, I've been following your blog since you started and am so impressed at your work. The vibrant colors and dark tones you use is an excellent example of contrast! I'm looking forward to seeing this project finished and it's inspiration for completing my own armies.

Post by: finnan

@Eirikr: pretty much what Gavin said. I use a pretty small brush (usually a 000 for general work, 0000 for details), and I certainly don't overload it with paint. When I put a stroke on the mini, if I've got it right, the paint should dry within a second or two of it going on because of the water:paint ratio and because it's such a thin layer. If I have a bit too much on there, I might spread it out more so it's more even (if there's room to do that), or quickly dry my brush and then let the brush suck back up the excess paint.
I think it was on the little demo I did for the swords a few pages back; it took about 30 layers to get the white nice and crisp from the base blue - sounds horrendous, but because the paint dries so fast, it only took about five minutes. Usually I work on a few areas at ones, so I paint area 1, then 2, then 3, and by that time, area 1 is dry and I can go back and add another layer and just cycle around those areas until they're done - it's not as if I'm sitting there waiting for the paint to dry.

@Gavin: thank you : ) Good luck with you army - one day I hope to have a completed army myself! lol

most of the grey blocked in on the 'Walker and a few repairs done where I wasn't quite so steady with the brush!
Now that my supplies of Badab Black have arrived, I can give it a wash later on, and then it'll be lots of yellow highlighting on the 'Lord so I can get him up to the same stage.

That thing is looking awesome. Decapitated Wraithlord, excellent!

And no you can't have a squad of wraithlords, each wraithlord takes up a Heavy Support slot, so you can have have multiples.

only a mini update - most of the grey blocked in on the wraithlord - still have the back and missile launchers to do, but that won't take too long. Also second heavy weapons guardian under way too.
Only three more days of term left, and then the plan is to get some quality painting done before I go away, and then more painting when I get back... must buy Games Day ticket!

after seeing the glaring gaps in my painting ability from the shots, just done some retouching, and blocked in the grey on the 'lord's back.
Note to self: don't try and do any steady freehanding when you're knackered. The wobbly lines that are produced only make more work as they need to be corrected!

Progress:
I've given the 'lord and the 'Walker washes of black, and then tidied up those spots where I wasn't too careful and the black wash went on some yellow areas. Now started to do the red highlighting, starting with the legs.

Second heavy weapons Guardian also done, so it'll be on with the rest of the squad soon.

Finally, a shot of the growing Team Eldar : )

My plan to keep the 'lord and the 'Walker at the same stages lasted longer than I thought it would lol However, I pushed ahead with the WraithWalker and he's done. Not too bad, if I do say so myself, but I think he suffers in the same way that the Autarch does/did in that there isn't any of the bone on him. Not that that matters too much, but it's something to bear in mind for the future.

I'm bound to notice something I've missed once I see the shots...

So, onwards and upwards - the 'lord to finish off, and I have another guardian and another ranger to finish off. Really need to grit my teeth and finish the Death Jester too.

Yeah, a stripe may not be subtle enough. I'm sure you've seen the faces some people do, but that's pretty far out of your design scheme, so maybe not. Perhaps just a geometric pattern, like a spiral or something. If you blended it in, and it was subtle enough, you could probably get away with it.

I wasn't thinking subtle stripe, more like a honkin' big block of black/yellow respectively... it's either that or the craftworld icon

That's some great painting how are you doing the blending?

However It looks a bit clean for something that is a war host, with the black kinda showing up the crispness of those big space of brightness, though it's sure a billion times better than what I can do.

That'll teach me to be lazy. That job would have been so much easier before I stuck the heads on!

Stripe on the 'lord because I couldn't really get to the right hand side because of his raised arm, and it was tricky enough doing the icon on the 'Walker. They're just roughed in at the moment - highlighting, cleanup and retouching to do tomorrow (including the bloody sword!)

wear it with pride my friend, wear it with pride!

@Nemesor - sorry, I kinda forgot to answer your question. Blending: thin down the paint A LOT, and then lots and lots and lots of thin layers, building up to the bright yellow. It's on an orange basecoat, so it doesn't take too much work to get up to the solid yellow. Same for the red over the black - lots of thin layers (it's actually a lot quicker to do the red than it is the yellow)

Not too much difference from the last shots, but tidy versions of the Wraithlord and WraithWalker, heads complete and mistakes gotten rid of!
Also next on the workbench: Harlequin Troupe Master. Not too much done so far as I only started him yesterday. Yes, more yellow, but I thought it'd be a nice nod to the craftworld colours as the Troupe is fighting with them. I aimed for some diamonds on his coat, but totally failed even getting them drawn out neatly, so I guess I'm not ready for them yet!
I'm off on holiday tomorrow, so a bit of a painting break, but more when I get back (hopefully bronzed!)

I now paint waaayyy to much red but I enjoy the look so I keep painting! the troupe master looks good so far and having the 'splash' of yellow will tie him in without obviously being from the craftworld imo, it's your execution of the darker colours that amazes me, the blending with the blues and dark reds are so lovely and refreshing from the normally seen painting styles, keep it up!

Post by: finnan

Okay, as requested by Nemesor and Urien, here's (hopefully) and in-depth walkthrough/tutorial on how I do my blending.

So, I guess starting at the beginning would be a good place to start.
I undercoat in white - I understand that you can get brighter colours form this - as opposed to undercoating in black - but I have to admit that the main reason I undercoat in white is because I can see what I'm doing! I tried undercoating in black, and I just couldn't see a thing! Having said that, the thought of trying to get a bright yellow on a black undercoat sends shivers down my spine. So, Lesson No.1: think about your colours. If you want brights, trying to get them bright from the start on a black base is going to be HARD, so go white.

I know what you're going to say - a lot of my shading these days is on the dark grey basecoat. Yes, they are, but they're never going to be as bright as they would be if they were on white. I've noticed with Hawks Turquoise in particular that its a very dark colour going on the black, but nice and bright on white - use this to your advantage and save yourself some work! Lesson No.2: have at least a little plan in your head about what your going to do and make things easy for yourself! It also helps to know your materials. I know that sounds stupid, and I guess it's taken me a while to build up this knowledge, but I know that reds and yellows are fairly translucent (see through) paints, while blues tend to be more opaque (not see through). Getting a nice crisp yellow is much harder work than getting a crisp blue because of the materials, not because of your technique.

Lesson No.3: Brushes. I use small brushes - not the GW Fine Detail brush; I use that for my basing. I buy mine from an Art store, and I go for general/Watercolour brushes - quite a small amount of bristles and a sharp point. I use 000 (triple zero) for most of my stuff, and a 0000 for fine freehanding. I use synthetic brushes, I've never been a fan of sable (like the GW brushes), I just find them too soft, and they do tend to suck up more paint than I actually want. The synthetics are just easier to use in my experience, and are easier to control the paint with. There's nothing wrong with the GW brushes, they're just a bit too chunky for my liking.

Lesson No.4: Basecoating. I don't seem to be using washes much these days - it's just a bit too random in how it dries and I don't think I'm a fan of the new ones. Because of that, instead of doing a basecoat in a mid-tone and then giving it a wash to get the shadows, I basecoat in my darkest tone, and just highlight up from there. It takes longer, I know, and would be a pain in the neck if you're after a quick painting technique, but there you go.
To put it in terms of the Inquisition Ranger and my craftworld Eldar, I basecoated in Charadon Granite, and then gave it an even wash to darken it up a bit - it's NOT black as a result, it's still dark grey. I do this instead of just painting it black because it gives it a bit of softness.
For the craftworld colours, for the yellow, I basecoat the whole of the areas I want yellow in orange.

Lesson No.5: Blending.
I thin my paints down A LOT. I do this a) because it makes them easier to control and b) it makes them last a lot longer and I'm quite cheap ; )
By a lot, I mean 1:3 paint:water as a minimum. If I want a really smooth blend, I'll thin it further. Why do this? By thinning the paint down, it spreads the pigment out - it's still the same colour/brightness, but it's just spread out over a greater area, so you need more of it to build up a solid block of that colour. This means that if you go wrong and it goes somewhere you don't want it, it's unlikely it'll show up, and it's not a disaster. It also allows you to build up lots of thin layers of colour, and get a really smooth gradient from one colour to another. The current GW painting technique is basically an optical illusion. By having a base tone, a mid tone and a highlight, basically your eye is tricked into seeing a blend. If you look closely, a lot of the time, you can see where one colour starts and another begins. By thinning your paints down and doing lots of thin layers, you're doing the same trick, but you're having a lot more transitions so it looks smoother as a result.
When I start blending, I generally can't see any results, it takes a couple of layers to see the colours - it takes a little while, but it's worth it. Once I can see the colour building up, I can start covering less and less area in it, so the transition starts to build up. In terms of the Ranger, my first highlight colour on his coat is Warlock Purple, and for the craftworld, Scab Red - you can't even really see it in the shot or in the flesh because it's so dark, but the eye does register it, and it helps to blend the colours that go on top of it. GW painting is kind of easy - the lower the part of the model, the darker it needs to be. The higher or further out from the model's core, the lighter it needs to be (generally!). For fabric, this means that the higher parts of the folds are going to be lighter. GW painting is a forced perspective - TECHNICALLY, we should be able to paint our models with one colour and the natural shadows do the work for us, but we don't do that, we push it by actively painting on deeper and lighter tones. So, I start my brush stroke where I want it to be darkest and finish where I want it lightest - I do this because there's more pigment at the end of the stroke than at the start, so with the ranger, I'd start in the folds and end up at the highest points. After that, it's just a matter of being patient and taking your time while the layers build up. I've said earlier in the blog that when I do the swords for my Eldar, it takes about 30+ layers to go from the blue to the white - sounds like a stupid number, but because the paint is watered down and so thin, it's quicker to dry, so 30 layers on a sword only takes about 5 minutes. The thinner the paint, the smoother the transition so it's really up to you how much time you want to invest in your models and the result you want to get.
After that, it's just a matter of working your way up through the colours to your highlight. Hopefully Hangfire won't mind me mention him here. He and I talked about painting a while ago and I kind of surprised him when I said about how I highlight. I do it with COLOUR, not by TINTING.

Lesson No.6: Colour Theory.
Shade = colour (red, green, blue etc).
Tone = more black in that colour.
Tint = more white in that colour.
GW highlights by adding white to their mid shades - they're creating a tint. (Pink is a tint of red. It's red with white in it. Pink's the only tint with it's own name... other tints are just called light blue, or light green). Technically black and white don't exist - black is just the darkest tone of a shade, and white is just the lightest tint. Black paints/pigments are usually just a really dark green, blue or brown - they just LOOK black. Nothing wrong with just adding white to lighten up a colour, but it does create a light, pastel aesthetic. I don't do that, I shade and highlight with colour.
In my Craftworld colours, I don't highlight the orange basecoat by adding white to the orange, I use yellow, the next colour in the spectrum. That means that if I want red, I'd basecoat in a dark red or even purple, have red as my mid shade and highlight with orange or even yellow. There's no white in there so it comes out a lot stronger and brighter. For blues, I'd basecoat in a dark blue or purple, have blue as the mid shade and go for a lighter SHADE as the highlight, or mix in some green.
I think this is one of the reasons some of my models look quite different - it's just that I use a different method/aesthetic to the GW one.

I suppose it all boils down to that I achieve my blending by using a small brush, thin layers and working with the properties of the paint to create an optical illusion. It's not hugely skilful but rather than a willingness to be patient and have good wrist strength and control. So no Nemesor, I don't use an airbrush lol. Urien - I used to think that I couldn't do Harlequins justice (and to a certain extent I still can't as I can't do the diamonds as neatly as I would like), but that doesn't mean that if I was VERY careful, I COULD do it - don't do yourself a disservice!

I hope that makes sense, and actually helps! If it doesn't, I'll give it another go!

just a teeny-tiny update really, I did a bit of painting yesterday and went into work today as it was results day (although I only managed about 10 minutes worth of 'work' and spent the rest of the time chatting!). I promise to get my painting act together!
Strange as it sounds, I don't have a tv, so I don't watch too much, and only if I know the show, or it's been recommended to me. However, I did have a tv in my hotel room last week, so I binged on rubbish tv - hurrah! On one show about overhauling cars or something, they did ghost stripes - stripes in a colour pretty close to the main colour block, and I thought that that would be a cool idea to steal for my Eldar : )
So I've given it a go on my Troupe Master - fairly strong still as I get the hand of it. I wanted a bit of a kick on his coat, so double stripes like on some of the Warlocks and the Farseer, in orange for the lining of his coat, and then a contrasting colour on the back. They've come out not too bad I think, although I wouldn't say no to making the stripes on the back a bit more noticeably orange/yellow on the highlight. The red stripes don't show up too well in the shot (hence wanting to orange them up a bit)

Now that's a bit different isn't it! :-) and it works really well! it's great to see a technique that is essentially subtle make such a big impact on the mini, I am impressed! and it's funny because you were the inspiration for me when I wanted to do something special on my DC dreadnought :-) so I actually tried some freehand (it's not finished yet, only w.i.p pics) and it's a 'similar' thing to what you've done lol a grey design on black washed down to nearly black and then highlighted up, I wanted a sort of wallpaper or curtain style look to it? after seeing this latest offering from you I am eager to try other colours now! perhaps on my termie captain I can muck around with some red designs? who knows? but as long as you keep showing us inspiring and original artwork i'll always be thinking about what's next! :-)

Glad you like : ) - it's odd how there's stuff we don't even consider and then it suddenly pops up!
I don't think I've quite got the colours right yet, but it'll take some practice. I think the trick will be to have the colours REALLY close to each other so they look more delicate.

Agreed! I think it will also have an effect as to what colours you are using the technique on? I think it will look quite striking on turquoise or even browns and of course the orange you are playing with currently, I would be interested to see this done on the inside of a wood elf cloak except make the design into a floral/vine type image, almost like a rather strikimg satin shirt with embossed feathers I own (pictures on demand )

it'd be a matter of doing it on a model that has enough flat space to do it on I suppose...
I like the idea of the feathers... /demands pictures ; )

How about we both have an attempt even roughly to see how it 'could' look on different colours? it'd give me something to work on in between spamming your thread with images of me in my brown satin embossed shirt and brown skin tight flares... oooooh yeah

don't know what I'd even attempt it on really. I do have a Falcon that's semi-started, but I'd have to think about how to do it and still have it fit into my craftworld scheme... maybe on a Ranger? They've got some flat spaces... Research needed I think. I need to have a look at the Thor stuff again.

Skin tight AND flared - ooh, yeah baby! If they were polyester, that might push me over the edge
... I now have an image of a totally pimped-out nerdfest... it burns!!
; )

Never one to back down from a challenge, I decided to go with a Ranger because of the flatness offered by his coat. Not 100% in line with my craftworld aesthetic, but that's not such a huge issue for the purposes of the experiment.
I've drawn the design on with pencil first, because trying to just doing with no guidelines would be too messy I think.
The next step is to think about colours...
I could go for my usual Charadon base for the coat, and then go darker for the stripes. The potential problem with that would be that I might not be able to get much depth on the overlapping of the pattern.
I could go dark for the coat and lighter for the stripes, but still in greys.

I just think that I'd have to do the stripes first (and separately) from the background of the coat, just so I've got them done and defined... this is already making my head hurt.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
okay... not a total failure, but I think to do this technique the trick will have to be to start with quite a light basecoat colour and have the ghosting a shade or two darker. With the greys I'm trying on the Ranger, it's just all too dark, and the definition is going... I can't help thinking that it'd be easier to do in yellows, oranges and reds.
I've also just done the stripes flat, and have started the base colour flat - I have no idea how I'm going to do the highlighting neatly... I think it would probably be best to do the coat flat, so all the shading and highlighting and then do the ghosting over the top in really thin layers so that the highlighting shows through - that means translucent paints rather than opaque... are the greys just too heavy and opaque?

pics of the experiment... I don't mind the front too much, but the back's a mess. I know it's unfinished and the white it very distracting, but I don't think it's working.

Never trust an experiment until it's complete, you never know what happy accidents can happen along the way.

So far, the pattern as drawn in pencil looked really good and had just the right mix of simplicity and intermingling of lines. Granted the white is distracting but I think that if you push through, once you add adding more colour in there, the whole composition will really come together, quite possibly in a way that you hadn't planned. In short, keep on it

Thanks Dark_Gear : )
I just can't help feeling that I'm using the wrong technique, and that it might have been a mistake to have the stripes overlapping as that adds more complexity...

Not to bad Finnan?!?!?! Its F@(king beautiful! Love the dark red ghost stripes, they look great! As for that tutorial, it was great too. The thing about how tints dont really work was really useful, but unfortunatelly for my shading, it requires patience. If only I could grow a patience tree... Ill give it a go anyway! Well done and thanks

A semi-busy day it seems as good progress has been made - but bugger me it's been hot! I generally don't like painting when it's hot because it makes the paint dry that much quicker, and that can lead to streaks and thicker paint, but I coped ; )

More work on the Troupe Master - legs are done and attached, and weapons are in progress. I want to do a few more coats of Gryphs Sepia on them, and maybe a wash of black too, then I can start highlighting back up to a nice bright gold. Then it's just the blade and the hair left to do.
I have to admit, he's looking fairly cool at the moment, I just hope i don't cock it up!

Also, attempt no.2 at the ghost striping experiment, and this one has gone much, much better. I think it's gone better because:
I did the base of the coat before I even attempted the stripes, and this gave me a guide to where the light and shade was going to go.
I also limited my palette to two shades of grey and black. This worked MUCH better than trying to work with Charadon as well. I think one of the problems yesterday was that I was working with cool AND warm greys, and it just looked messy as a result. Today I was just using cool greys, and they worked much better with each other.
No overlapping shading on the stripes - simple is better; a simpler pattern for the stripes too.
I still haven't cracked this, but progress has certainly been made : )
