That implies I am an awesome painter, for which I thankyou, though that is a lie I suspect also it would be yet another time consuming distraction. Cos my gks aren't that, honest.
Just caught back up on your blog , some lovely work and very nice painting going here mate ,sorry not to see more mentor legion guys , but the new stuff is very nice too , especially like your nurgle food images made me lol the weeping angels look very nice and i have always like the idea of miniatures as Elgin like marble statues tbh , The mini dioramas you have on the bases are very nice too, all in all great stuff all round , sorry to have missed so much .
@neil - no need to apologise! Glad you like what you've seen.
So decision made, in part thanks to #2 clImbing my workstation and trashing stuff: Mentors to stay as Mentors. I need to give em a bit of love: so much work went into their inception, not just by me but by others also, they deserve to no longer remain a sea of primer. So, this evening first wash went down on a scout w hb, 3 scout bikers, the techmarine dread, termie specials, a couple of assault marines, 4 vanguard, and some other termies too. There will be more. Oh my yes.
Oh my, you are making speedy progress. I'm feeling an urge for a burst of sudden painting coming on soon myself.
Especially since I got ALL the Extinction Angels out and put them on shelves (and for my shame discovered 5 MORE Chaos Terminators on sprue o.o).
I reckon once the money (finally) gets put on the Credit Card I may have a proper binge of painting. And maybe a FW treat. Maybe some Berserkers to start my 8th Company.
@dss: there's always something else on a sprue, or on a box, that distracts, isn't there?
Objective achieved, anyway: remaining primed mentors all washed - that's a squad each of tac, scout and assault. Not too bad. Tomorrow I may swing by gw or flgs for more grey primer, though cold weather means spraying may be off for a while. Want at least remaining TAGK primed and ready (they need a quick once over).
Progress feels awesome and am more generally feeling sanity return. That or it's the tasty paint talking.
Now I promise there will be pics tomorrow, but bear with me. All termies given next layer of white, green added to 2. I really think this will work wife's off to see breaking dawn tomorrow night *sigh* so if kids settle, I'm aiming to paint some more, though the plan is to attend to gms stuff.
See, it's really nice to be doing a splash o paint, but I need to make sure I stay both on task and interested. I mustn't get bored with mentors which, when block painting is the risk. I actually want to start of the gks with corpses but feel I should at least get the gms projects done!
On another tack, a mighty trade from catharsix means a unit of blood letters for my pagk to maul AND... A defiler! So after much consideration, as the title suggests, I'm going to orkify it. Yes, empire would be cool, but the idea of CowBoyz an Enjins is just too good to miss. I had this crazy, crazy idea that I'd use only gw parts, but Black Hat do 28mm cowboy hats and Kromlech do both Orks bodies in greatcoats (works for me as dusters) and confederate ork heads too. It's, like, a sign.
This inevitably leads to more of graven's shameless scrounging (wow, blog tagline is a dead giveaway this week) - just really for anything you lot think would be useful to this bizarre idea. Naturally, I shall as always reciprocate as best I am able.
Later,

And a couple of termies with a test of the green scheme on them:
Adios!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Gms guys done pics to follow
I hope these are for the GMS and yor going to stick to the Mentors? For the Orks take a look at Ramshackle Games they've got a great orky defiler and also a crde traction engine which might fit the theme.
@ gits: thanks matey. Crusty I like that. I'm kind of embracing a painting style that works for me, just now at least. Also, I just have to have weathered soldiers. It's the rules @ arakasi: good-o
@ knightley: do it! Do it now!
@ dss
Didn't get much done last night; had to build a Lego Bank and stage a robbery. In retrospect, a skylight in a gold vault is not a good idea. Still, Motf dread, half a scout squad, Chapter Master and 2 Teleport Homers, all whited. Nothing tonight, Rpg-ing for a change, Banks's Culture off Mongoose Traveller. Should be fun.
Well,
Mongoose Traveller Culture mash-up was great fun, other half of that to play in January - nice to be rpging, nice not to be running a game for a change. Still, back to Trek in Feb.
Couple of bits done in the last few days, but Thanksgiving yesterday means nowt done (apart from taking pictures of a Justin Beiber cake done for a 7 year old... yeesh). Still, proof of where I'm up to:
And a slightly more detailed view:
Nice view of counts as Lugft and count as Nova Marine termie bloke there. What makes me happy is more than half the shelf on top of the writing desk is now at stage 3 (prime>wash>white) which is major progress. I'll try to sneak a few more in after work...
Rest of shelf above is now done! So, all primed me tots are at stage 3. Now, back to the gks and corpses! Aim is for all bgm to be done this weekend on paladins, dreads etc. Maybe even SR ...
^ Thanks bud. Yeah, they don't seem to get much love; they really take me back to when I first started the hobby (WD with adverts for other companies! Shock horror!)
I just started making a list of possible Ork stuff to loot for my Death Skulls and I pondered on a defiler as well, I was thinking on using the base and legs and putting a battlewagon front with an opened up back with the possessing daemon in a cage. So you kind of get the impression a weird boy has excommunicated it from the defiler.
I say go for it it looks cool, no idea where its from though.
@giraffex: fools seldom differ It's a question of what parts I can scavenge, tbh. I worry that the defiler simply wouldn't look big enough for a battlewagon; you got a pic Briancj?
Certainly mega dread seems logical. I'm thinking use the defiler body as spider head and bits to make a rear engine section, where the defiler body would go.
Ok, been a bit out of the loop what with one thing and other (life... Don't talk to me about life) but got some stuff done thus far this week. Pics, plus any further progress, will appear over the weekend:
Wednesday was productive, after not getting my Sunday fix (ikea - ugh) and wife in bakeasaurus mode. Added bgm to all remaining primed gks - 3 dreads, NDK, dozen termies, LR, Rhino and SR. Also did tracks on =][= chimera, some terrain work (Sanctum Sororitas is finally staying in base thanks to polyfilla (spackle to you colonials)), and added a cowboy hat to a grot as part of my misguided wild wild west Orks side project (conclusion - buy Lego cowboy hats for orks). Oh, and seem to have scored a small SoB force...
Forthcoming plans:
1. Acquire Gnoblars. Especially from scrap launcher; they will look good as western grots (thoughts about night goblins, but they're just too... Gobliny)
Anyone? Willing to part with bits/£$€¥/offspring...
2. More GMS work. Another weeping beakie, and the weeping serg as well. If I get half an hour I can get a lot of the wash layering done.
3. Work our what to do with the SoBs. At least one cannoness is getting turned into a statue for the Sanctum.
4. Build the defiler's leg section. This will give me the chance to play about with different uppers. The plan is to leave the lower half basically as is, minus chaos stars. Keep or snip the spikes?
5. Really ambitious one: block paint the white for the paladins. Hey, a guy can dream.
6. Pack an army up for a game on Tuesday, which may or may not be happening.
Fun times!

Start painting csms! Which is, priority wise, actually #1!
Too true amigo. I got done some stuff - can't find wife's camera anywhere though, and mine's on the blink (3 guesses what we're getting each other this year). Weeping angels' stone colour is done so now it's just details, weapons, etc; realised there were no blood drops on the beakie, so now he has Dante's jumppack and suddenly seems even more lethal.
Defiler conversion ongoing - it has a head - still need to do engine assembly. Got some paint down on the RoB, too.
Next stage: photos, engine for defiler, paint on corpses. Oh, and do have a game on Tuesday night so will attempt pics and batrep.
@gits: glad you got him - I await orky joy! @dss: cheers bro. I've installed the app and we'll see in a sec if that's an even better solution. @miss dee: glad you approve. Got boxes today but haven't had a chance to open them yet! Had to take kids - and wife - and in-laws - to see a very shiny Xmas house, just back. @knightley: Mega Dread. Kill Claws, big shootaz, Kannon. Works for me! Might even have a source of Gnoblars for riggers. Got to do the Mek though, Dr Morkwelito Legless.
Ok, test pic 2 - set up from outstanding game I had last night with my mate Dougie. Batrep to follow; I *just* won. Whoops, forgot the spoiler tag
Automatically Appended Next Post: Success! Dougie's Solar Griffons on the left, the Cydonian 9th on the right. Take&Hold/pitched battle, 2k. And yes, that's a Baneblade.
+Terms of Engagement: take and hold key position from Renegades.+
... Advisory - Supplemental: enemy role to be fulfilled by Cydonian 9th. Do not repeat do not underestimate...
Lists (bit rough, sorry)
IG CCS with lascannon 2x Chimera w 10 vets (carapace, 3 meltas) 1x Chimera w 10 vets (carapace, 3 plasma) 1x Vendetta w 10 vets (carapace, 3 plasma) Baneblade Bane Wolf LR Executioner LRBT Guardsman Marbo
SM Captain with pf, jump pack, melta bomb Tactical squad w RL Tactical squad w HB 2 LR w multi-melta 2x 5 termies w assault cannon Assault squad Whirlwind Dread with Assault Cannon
Setup Dougie won the toss and elected to go first, keeping the termies in reserve. LRs with marines in the centre, with a view to rush and hold, & dread to cover, assault marines on one flank, whirlwind on the other. I kept back both squads of melta vets, with the aim of using baneblade as a bloody great target and vendetta to crack the LRs, and plasma vets/russes to take out the passengers.
First turn the SM advanced, and despite many shots fired managed to just shake the chimera. The IG had a bit more success: the bane wolf took out half the Assault Marines, the Venetta disabled a crusader, and the baneblade stopped the other LR dead in the water.
Turn 2 the assault marines take out the bane wolf, the raiders immobilise the chimera and the dread and newly-disgorged tactical marines take pot shots ineffectually.
The executioner takes the assault marines down to 1 man plus captain, baneblade downs all bar 3 members of first tac squad (interesting rules question: do you get a cover save from blast weapons? I always thought not, but apparently you do?!) and the Vendetta trashes a LR entirely, whilst its passengers whittle down tac marines to 4, who promptly get finished off by other 3 plasma guys and ridiculously lucky bloke with a glorified flashlight from the chimera.
So, end of turn 2, all looking good for the IG, right? SM have only 3 troops left, we've still got 40, right?
And then. The reserves.
Actually, the termies are more a nuisance then anything else. They pop in, and start trying to crack open tanks (chimera duly opened loke a tin of spam) but more importantly they form an effective screen around the SMs holed up in terrain. The captain with his fist of doom single handedly (sorry) takes out the executioner - most impressive and advances on the baneblade. The stationary LR finally takes down the Vendetta, and the dread tears up a vet squad, leaving alive 2 plasmas only.
And for the IG... No reinforcements.
Dang. So much for Marbo distracting folk.
The baneblade doesn't do much, kills off a couple of termies, shuts down the remaining LR. I forget to use the demolisher cannon in an act of gross stupidity. The 2 plas survivors take down the dread on rapid fire, and the other squad take down one of the last 3 tacticals - but that means no LOS to the others.
Turn 4, the captain wallops the baneblade.
Bang.
Nuff said. The termies destroy the vets, and the largely useless CCS bar the CO.
Finally, I get reserves. I stick down the 2 chimeras and Marbo by the captain; Marbo manages to pin him from afar. One squad of vets becomes a meat shield, and the plasmas take out the last 2 tac marines.
Dougie takes the bait. The termies go for Marbo Assault Cannon style: So then they lay in with SBs and kill him. The whirlwind takes out some vets, justifying its existence.
In my final turn, the undamaged squad of vets run in to claim the building, scoring a victory for the Cydonian 9th!
Well, we both agree it was a great game in which we both made some glaring errors. For me, I didn't use my russes well and need to look at a more effective HQ for the list. The Baneblade was fun, lethal, but certainly not unstoppable. I was impressed how well the 9th coped against SM, generally. For Dougie, it was about focusing on mission objectives and not getting sidelined.
A great game, as I say. We had an observer on hand too, and even he enjoyed the full thing (handy to have a rules arbiter, too). Nice to get a run of my guard again, at least once a year.

Gruesome? As it's my 2000th post, I choose to take that as a compliment! It's a mega dread. Chaos stars will be going, naturally, probably evil sun logos if I can get them (Sunz of da Saaf).
Ha! I feel I've finally arrived - my blog has rambled sideways...
Ok, I need opinions on whether this Photobucketing of quick pics is worthwhile. With that in mind, I felt a wee burst of activity tonight (aka - I'm out of glue, better paint some):
I have some stuff to paint...
Bit of work on my first NDK, on a whim
Some ink layers on Karamazov, to be much like the weeping angels:
Adding wash layers to test termies:
Testing wings on the vanguard, and gms angel sergeant.

Adding some nice thin dark green to the Mentors:
Onwards, methinks. Blue Bloods Season 2 is a productive master.

@ dss: cool. Really enjoying your flesh tearer blog btw. Like the Libby @ llamahead: yeah, blackhand's heads are amazing on the sanguinaries. I have another 6 to finish, mind you...
Actually, whilst on continuing frenzy of random activity, did some work on =][= retinue, partly inspired by llamahead's highly creative use of Confrontation minis: Mystic and acolyte, potentially. Warmachine cephalyx and Something Gryphony from conf.
Ook.
Death cult assassins, provenance unknown.
Solomon Lok and toilet roll servitor, from bits.
=][= Heth Fenrix for Warone, for his Sterling gms fiction work. Confrontation, again.
Callidus. 3 seconds later #2 son broke it fixable though. Also a couple of mentors and *sigh* Karamazov who will need a new pointy finger (because fine cast is in fact ice cream).
Corteaz and his cyber owl. Toowhoo.
And some gks...
I'm seriously considering using Sisters as Warrior acolytes and crusaders. Thoughts?
I love the observations on Finecast being like ice cream.
Though I was shocked on Thursday - I picked up my DE Hydra I had ordered over a month ago (having words with the guy in charge of the store as this is NOT acceptable) and found the thing to be in perfect condition!
Got a bit of time today - was looking after vomitus #2 son but got occasional non-exorcist moments - and made progress on odds and ends. No photos (sorry) for chaos rhino for SR base, vindicator or razorback, and the following are still phone pics BUT still...
Gms beakie:
Basically done; a better pic tomorrow, hopefully, for the gallery.
Some work on my Wild Wild West mech:
More armless than Legless but still. He's designed to be removable from the tank so playable in his own right. Kromlech greatcoat and commando head, black cat topper, IG pads for epaulets (fringing tbd) and old stubber barrel as exhaust on hat (so it's, like, an actual stovepipe hat...) I have no idea what, if anything, to arm him with.
And in situ, on the mega dreadfiler.
This too is largely done. Needs orky glyph plates over the chaos stars on leg joints. Nevertheless, rather happy, especially the gratuitously large exhaust. Wonder whether the kill Kannon needs to be a bit more... Killy? That's all though really, bar the addition of a fist full of Gnoblars.
Ok, sons are asleep, wife is asleep, I'm going to take the hint.
... Dang! Good catch guys. You know, it's really obvious to me now, yet throughout I just didn't see it. It had been removed and punished for its heresy.

In other news, I have been also poked by Farmboy, and fellow lurker Uncle Truth has requested the lords of decay. @DSS: Glad you like him! I wanted to try to echo the pad logo in his design. I'm really pleased with the lower half, which is a bit of a plastic skeleton.
Not much progress to report: some work on gk razorback builds, that's about it. Hopefully, post Xmas, will pick up pace again.
Pah. We have a Lego police boat that floats, now )
I notice in the photo of the mek the arm with the gs sleeve (which needs smoothed, I grant you) looks disproportionate, which is odd as it doesn't in reality. Quite want a pointing arm for the other and to modify the shoota a bit with gubbinz.
Also, wife got me a ridiculously shiny new camera for Xmas, so might even get half decent pics from me. Or not
Tomorrow is a quiet day in the house. Perhaps optimistically, I hope to do some painting. Aye, right.
So, a happy and prosperous - and p&m filled - 2012 to all.
I have had a great 2011 on dakka, all in all.
Too many folk to thank and mention - hats off to all of you who've helped with the corpses of chaos, which are getting exclusive attention in the new year - but a couple that I must:
Gitsplitta - if only for the legend of his wife's spare thanksgiving turkey (for sandwiches).
Yggdrasil & BashTheBosh - for obligingly not getting blown up.
Monkeytroll - truly demented convertion inspiration and supply.
Miss (or should that be Mrs?) Dee - for being an inspiration on a more personal level.
Knightley - for making me raise my game.
So many others I could, and should mention, but I am drinking beer and ignoring family!
But, some pics.
First, GMS-s:

Automatically Appended Next Post: Sorry about the lack of posts/progress; various family stuff involving my folks has preoccupied the new year season and will continue to do so, I suspect.
I have tidied my man-cave and got my paints into a single accessible form so hopefully paint progress is more likely.
On the build front, I modified my vendetta - wing-art envy:
I've ordered some nail-art transfers as well, as part of ongoing plan to vamp up my IG.
Love that base. Have you thought of giving it battle damage consistent with some of the big guns on the nose of that monstrosity?? As if the Storm Raven had flown up, strafed it (wrecked it) and was now passing over... you might even be able to add some smoke coming out of the hatch in order to disguise the pedestal a bit more.
Nice stetson on the grot - WestWind? I have a couple of 54mm 'cowboy hats' that seem to work well on orks, hadn't thought of grots. Mek is coming along very nicely as well.
Loving that base too, great idea to have the support coming out of the hatch.

Cheers bud. Yup, I've not damaged up the rhino yet - it's not glued in, it's designed to slide off for painting. I've also yet to add a Solar Griffon marine into its jaws. Ooh, good idea on the 54mm for orks; tried Lego, far too big. Those on the grots are from Black Cat Bases; great for really random accessories, too. Defil-ork still needs cables, but I found 4 sprues of (I think) baneblade wheels so they've been cut from struts and will go on over the chaos icons soon as.

Really happy with how it looks, yeah. Felt sacrilegious cutting the bottom out a mk1, but there we are, no point being precious.
So, as you may know, very stormy weather here in Scotland; my folks have lost a chunk of their roof, so they're staying with us, which is pretty stressful. I'll get back to geek work soon as I'm able.

You might look at the artificial "wool" they use in stuffed animals and such. I've used it for smoke plumes pretty successfully. Takes paint well, is pretty durable and as formable as anything else you might imagine. Think I got mine from a box store (Walmart or some such) in the sewing or crafts section.

I haven't used it on a model, but I have used it to make a light-up smoke plume to put on exploded vehicles (using a little battery powered tea light).
I swore I took some pics of it or at least used it in a battle report, but I can't find anything in my gallery, I'll try and take care of it tonight.
Right,
So my folks are away. It was actually surprisingly ok, but not an experience I would like to repeat regularly. Still, my kids enjoyed the attention and I got to go to the cinema with the wife. We squee'd at dark knight rises on IMAX
I hope to get back on the painting wagon soon. I have so little £ that I need to just man up and embrace the liquid aspect of the hobby in full. I have some building stuff I can distract myself with if necessary. Also been making pâté, which isn't exactly hobby related (grot parfait?), but is tasty.
A couple of odds and ends, however.
Baneblade drive wheels attached to defil-ork over And da mek done bought hisself a new power klaw:
2 quick WIPs for others, a weeping angel vet for Knightley:
And special order for Miss Dee, a former Astral Claw/Night Lord Apothecary (some gs to follow, but principle is sound)
I also added urban rubble to my remaining pagk, a unit of Sob and some retainers - dull but a necessary step forward. To the spray booth!
Lastly, I got a couple of gorgeous gms models from Solar_Lion, but I'll wait to snap them with the shiny new camera rather than apple-ing them.
Thanks mate. I also got my GKLRC done tonight (well, bar one hatch, but I have to go into the depths of my bits box to find ravenwing sensor doohickeys for that). I've reached the decision that as 2011 was the year of building, 2012 shall be.. the year of painting.
Stop laughing at the back there. Whilst I might build stuff, the focus has to be paint this year - wish me luck!
Hey folks,
Apols for the lack of updates. Stuff happened:
1) spray explosion. Not good. Messed up minis, messed up garage. Cross with Army Painter.
2) wife is in baking overdrive.
3) kids are not sleeping. Nuff said.
4) auditioned for, and got part in, a show. Long story short: used to do a lot of musical theatre, and haven't for years (since kids) - gently easing back in. This will impact a bit on gaming time, though not on P&M time. I suspect I'll not get a game till the summer of 6th.
Still, bought a new toy, having sold off my Cryx to filbert (pirates still available though...):
This is for both cakes and figs. A great buy - yay eBay!
Lastly, a build conundrum:
I'm going to make the IA10 Exorcist character for theglassninja for his birthday at the end of the month. He's described as being a giant even by marine standards, Ogrun sized. I'm thinking SM torso on termie legs, maybe using Ork arms? Anyone with ts experience care to share? Or thoughts in general?
Adios, graven
I'd suggest having a look at some of the true-scale projects floating around, I'd point you in the right direction, but I can't recall any of them atm.
I had a light box just like that one! It works great graven, just a matter of getting your camera set up properly to match the lighting. I passed mine on to Solar_lion when I got my new ('uge) one. I think he's using it to excellent effect now.
Congrats on the part! Master thespians awake!!!
Um.... not me of course... but all-y'all out there. You know who you are.
Front, back and a scale ref; naff camera phone pics, sorry. I'm concerned normal arms might look too skinny - termie arms with beefed up SM pads maybe? And then there's the head - helm or no?
In the fluff he's rune covered - I'm debating liquid gs'ing and going a bit crazy...
Very good start graven. Like the way you've handled the waist and legs. Some termie pads and you'll be all set.
Typically, I like helmeted marines if they're supposed to be "in action" fighting, but then there are those occasional heads that are just so expressive that they're worth a little suspension of disbelief.
Not easier, just... Different  it's less sticky and cures faster than green, and takes a hard edge better, IMO. However, it less malleable, generally.
Works for me so far I'd say you're on the right track with termie arms (do the new arms still have wiring/tubing on, I'd shave that off if so?) and pimped out pads.
Like Gits, I prefer a helmet, but bare heads work well in certain contexts.
Anywhere that stocks GF9's hobby range; I recommend my FLGS Static (a1comics.com / 0141 552 9785), is very good
Automatically Appended Next Post: Right, well, spent the evening invaded by Texans - honesty, I felt like Mexico in the 19th Century - which was very pleasant, and then #2 took so long to settle that wife & #1 gave up and crashed out.
Hence, some sanity and winding down time for me, which = a bit of ts progress:
Not 100% on the techie head but it's bulkier than average and quite characterful. Went with termie arms - still need a lot of work - and bulkier ba pads for height. More purity seals and scrollwork aplenty needed. C&C etc, as ever,
Yours truly,
Your humble and obedient servant,
graven
Funnily, idea came from a local redshirt. I actually popped I for ideas from them about bodies initially, and they persuaded me not to spend any money. Weird but true.
@RM2020: in fairness, they're very tolerant of me rambling at them. @gits: well IA10 specifies wicked spikey 2-h mace so your reaction is encouraging @Knightley: judging arm proportion is very tricky. I added a little ball of gs under the head - he now stands just taller than a termie, which fits the bigger than an ogrun criterion - but arms are a pain. That may be because of the gk termie arms, not sure. I blame monkeytroll regardless... I wonder about using gs to create some metalwork detailing, in the style of this chappie: Here is current version, regardless: (snip - see next post) Thoughts? And so, to bed, Graven
Morning, Been really unwell this week with the man-flu and completely rammed at work - end of Jan is nearly as bad as Nov in teaching - but managed to get a couple of odds and ends done. A little work on the Exorcist (bit "white" this, sorrry):
And I gained, from the mighty Chowderhead, a looted vindicator (amongst other things), which I've set about preparing for theglassninja for a quick repair/spray job: It had no back door, hence the "adventures in bits box" version.
I also pimped a couple of empire battle wizards up, an idea which I've had in my brain for a while: This can run as ecclesiarchy or plasma troopers for =][=. Need to get me another body to make a 3rd, though.
Further spray experiments: using humbrol grey, which I've not done in a while as it's a bit pricey and the coverage is a bit uneven, as a base for the sisters and other =][= retinue types, and I've also done a smoke experiment which hopefully I'll snap pics of over the weekend. I've also been offloading stuff furiously which means that, whilst I'm not spending any money, I will still have more toys to play with. Yay!
Who know, I might even pick up a brush at some point
I actually wanted to use another wolf scout head, but couldn't find one in my rummaging. Cheers for well-wishing, wasn't as bad as it could've been - had swine flu a couple of years back and that felt like being hit by a bus.
Knightley wrote:Loving the looted vindicator mate! interesting use of the dreadnaught sarcophagus bits on the rear parts.
Well, further pics to follow momentarily. I confess I love that rear hatch and will be attempting to replicate it!
Solar_lion wrote:Like the staff on the exorcist. Might have to copy that!
SL
Llamahead wrote:Really liking the tech head power weapon on the Lamenter how was it made? The plasma gunners are looking great as well.
Thanks chaps. It's made from 2x nemesis warding staves. I cut the =][= skulls out of the middle, took the spiked head off staff 1 altogether and simply slotted it into the gap at 90 degrees. Quick easy and pretty damn funky!
Slight panic as we're going early to nephew's birthday as we're now going this weekend. Oh wait, it's Friday :censored:
So, tank rescue:
And blocked colours on Exorcist, with ink still wet:
He, clearly, still needs work, but you get the gist.
I've restricted myself deliberately to gw paints, as that's what he has access too, and he can base the dude himself. I gave him my flock already, so let's hope it's not been eaten by dog, siblings or teenage bedroom.
Nice tank recovery, and the exorcist is looking sweet.
Tek-Masta 'Stumpy' finally left this morning - he was whinging about going up to Scotland, saying it was too cold up there. I pointed out that he was going to a home with better heating than here, and without a huge great heat-sink 6 inches below the floor. That and a hint that there were plenty of red-heads north of the border and he fair sealed himself inside his transmogrifier.
@ gits - so long as it's not a reference to that Disney rabbit...
So some actual, final pics; playing with new camera and settings etc. Not happy with how the scarified armour turned out but it's better than when it was gold.
Vindicator: The Rescue!
Having done these, I realised that is forgotten to add text to the scrollwork. Nuts.
And what does everybody need for their 40k birthday?
It's theglassninja's birthday tomorrow, so he got an exorcist themed gift set at the weekend there (that lot plus rogue trader Rpg). I'm like the cool/nerd uncle, y'know?
No news as such just to say that sweet zombie jesus postage to the USA is insane over 2kgs! Also, I sent out a whole bunch of stuff to everyone expecting goodies, FYI.
Incoming I have metal gks, which are like to make me squee...
Your close-up was closer than mine - and now I see more stuff I should have done
I'm certainly no expert, but the pics look a bit bright/over-exposed. I had similar issues when I first used my lightbox, found I needed to close some curtains in daylight, or fit the front screen when under daylight bulbs.
Thanks, good to know. I shall experiment further in the coming days.
Little update. Generally things have been a bit of a mess lately, and I've decided I can't sustain this and doing a show at the same time - so, I've chucked the musical. Not been seeing my mates, not seeing enough of family, and just too damned stressed. Work is full-on enough, I need my hobby to be a release, not a chore.
So last night, I prepped (ink wash + flesh tones) ten SoBs, a weeping angel for Knightley, 2 =][=, half a dozen assorted retinue, and chaos apothecary for Miss Dee. Felt good spotted flaws that needs fixed, tidied a Weeping Angel that's for someone - honestly can't remember who though. Weeping Angel serg with pre-heresy gear? Who choose you?
Obviously no pics is tedious; I will go back to pic updates soon as.
Also had a brainwave: Markillius08 had a great idea for kitbashing death cult from eldar/Deldar bits which intrigued. I'm considering using daemonette heads, mix'n'match eldar / deldar torsos&legs and Deldar swords. Thoughts, folks? I know it's tricky without a mock-up, I'm just thinking of the witch kitbashes that were flying around.
As noted by gits, the old avatar's back, and I feed I'm trying to get back to the old me in many ways. So, I'm building, cos it makes me cheery
Came by some old school metal pagk. Fun to build with a minimum of fiddling:
Although I imagine I'll add some =][= brass etch or other gk detail bits to them.
As for the rest:
NDH kitbashed from stave and ba th bits. Halberd's just a termie one. Both will get some gs, seals and =][=ing.
Oh, and I need psilencers. But my spare pagk ones got turned into noise marine toys. So, couple of termie ones, and some messing about=
On the subject of =][=, been playing with an idea for Valerya:
I'd like to do the other hand holding the hyperstone cube, but having trouble finding a good, open, female hand. Any ideas troops?
And continuing in that vein (and that I've become slightly distracted - yet again - by building retinue), some crusaders. I started with my kitbash Lok:
Hopefully you can see the logic! Obviously, again, further =][= details to follow.
So a certain fabulous gent threw me some Dark Age minis, and it struck me that they'd make interesting death cult with some minor modifications. I'd certainly like to hear your views on these before I add brass etch and, possibly, gs masks. Classic death cult Left, dark age chicks Right:
And playing with other bits, I started to play with some assassin ideas:
C&C very much sought, I'm really just fiddling at present,
Later,
Graven
Thanks chaps. I concur about the assassin; even with the daemonette head, she's very DE. This doesn't especially bother me - assassins ALL look very Deldar; I think the key will be adding a mask and some =][= etch. I have no idea how to do the pistol, I'm considering using dire avenger bits cut down. Any other ideas?
The Dark Age girls certainly have the Death Cult feel to them and fit nicely with the original GW models.
The assassin looks too DE to me. I think it's because it's still got all the spiky, DE style armour. If you were to trim that down a bit and soften it up with some scrolls it might look a bit more unique?
inmygravenimage wrote:As noted by gits, the old avatar's back, and I feed I'm trying to get back to the old me in many ways. So, I'm building, cos it makes me cheery
Spoiler:
Hopefully you can see the logic! Obviously, again, further =][= details to follow.
C&C appreciated as ever,
graven
Models are pretty darn awesome, loving it. I've subbed.
Just curious where did the arms from the middle guy come from? I really need those in my life.
Thanks mate. Iirc, the pointing arm is from the assault marine sprue, the sword from da vets. The shoulder detailing is gk brass etch. I have been working on some odds and ends; will try to update properly over the next couple o' days.

Assassin WIPs -
Next, for the GMS, as part of the side-project for Vent, helping him get his groove back after being burgled (head over to the thread for my details) - a weeping angel captain:
And to ensure the sky falls on our heads, evidence of paint on models! Light layering on =][=, retinue, SoB and MissDee's traitor apothecary:
And a whole lot o shiny gks:
Today I was weak and bought the 25th anniversary model - lovely, and in no way am I considering moulding that head - and Finecast sword brethren, either to gk or plow back in to my Mentor Legion. Thoughts?
Also, I have a (delayed) game on 13th against a mate's Khorne horde. When you sit and look at it, Chaos is an idiotically difficult match-up for GKs *sigh*. At 1.5k, list is shaping up like this:
Gk 1.5k v daemons
Corteaz 140
Strike 260 (10+2Psilencer, halberds,ndh)
Strike 260 (ditto)
Interceptors (5+ndh+psilencer) 140
Chimera 55
Banisher 15
Jokaerox2 70
Warrior with bolter x4 20
SR with Hurricane, mm 235
NDK (psilencer, psycannon, jump) 280
1475
Leaves me a few points tweak, too. C&C appreciated all round, mes amis -

@MajorTom11: most kind! I made legs for a Vindicare using a very bent one from a DE. Then it got eaten by one of cat, sofa, child or bitz box. Bit more work on the Everesor and Culexus:
The assassins are looking great. Making plastic versions of them all is something I've got on my "to do" list.
I know what you mean about the 25th anniversary model. I picked one up this morning as well and wish I had two as I feel bad butchering it... it's a very nice model (and not one bubble in sight!)
LMAO - and yelling:" Oi, you laughing at my hat? You think it's funny? Come here and say that!" I have some black cat beer bottles I picked up for my old west orks, tempted to give him one
Thanks guys. I'm pretty happy but mainly concerned that green is too strong a colour against both blues and reds. I like the individual elements, just not sure it's a cohesive whole.
Well, for me... it's the red helm wings (if anything) that are a bit out of synch. Blue and green have similar values (for lack of a better term) so compliment each other reasonably well. The red on the wings is the part that feels unsettled.
I'm totally into those assasins you're building! very well done! especially the Eversor? (dude with the big head that's not Gits ) I can't wait to see them painted up, as well as the impatient Padawan's Night Lords apothecary!
Possibly... Appreciated. Difficulty with that is that he's supposed to be Night Lord-y, hence the red. But, I absolutely take your point. Would it be better with a massively corroded axe instead?
Automatically Appended Next Post: @NF09: comedy hat is Culexus. Eversor is the guy with the big old claw. Cheers though - joy, painting black...
I think the corroded axe might fit the colour scheme more effectively.
Your other alternative is to darken the green so that it looks more like obsidian. A few washes of black over the blade would achieve that and should leave you with a greenish hue around the edges
Hmm, tough call. I like the obsidian idea. I'll leave it up to miss dee *looks pointedly*.
Last assassin - tidied my bits box a bit and found the missing legs:
Thoughts? Still need a head, thinking of using SM scout with visor - course I'll need to find/thieve/beg one...
No p&m tonight, playing LotR lcg and trying not to get pulled into a =][= campaign.
Toying with doing a fw order, btw, if anyone uk is interested, lmk.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Followed endtransmission's suggestion, black washes:
Thoughts?
At last, decent photos using the lightbox (thanks for tips) and, of all things, a cake stand (thanks to mrs graven):
There are more pics but camera went bang from taking too many cake pics (creme eggs baked into cupcakes: my wife's trying to kill me with involuntary diabetes...)
Fairly happy with this and, more importantly I guess, Miss Dee likes him. Thanks for input on axe in particular folks.
Build wise, not much more done, although I am starting the process of cutting up BT sword brethren for the other half of my insanely converted Interceptor squad. Onwards, eh? Next plan is some brass etch from FW, methinks.
Thanks mate - intense is, I think, a compliment here?!
Got a box of glorious bitz from MeanGreenStompa on the post today, which could mean further distraction as I can now theoretically assemble my gringork's gargantuan squiggoth... Though I really need to sort my gks!
I like the depth of colour on the helm too, thanks giraffex.
Blue wash? Yeah, it's a bit pale, now you mention that. I'll deepen that down. Fair comment. As always, the C&C much appreciated.
Not got much done tonight just be chilling and catching up on telly with mrs, after an outstanding curry and the muppets, which rocked my world. Did a wee bit on black Templar > gk conversions:
It's a direction, eh? Rubbish pic, hey ho, back to old ways
It turns out building a chaos apothecary has been a sure fire means I've had 3 weeks of plague and got bugger all to show for it except novel colours of face goo. Wife and kids have likewise been sticky, so fun all round.
Still.
Wife has been busy with caking, too:
Rarrrrrr, etc. We're giving it to my mother-in-law
I on the other hand am pootling about doing not very much. It has occured to me that I probably don't need a 3rd squad of strikes with halberds and am thus considering switching them out to interceptors, as my extant interceptor squad are all plain swords. Thoughts?
On the subject of my interceptors - who are still the only painted unit I have in sodding army - I've done a little more on BT conversions:
First dude, better pic
Finecast's ice-creamy tendencies lend themselves so well to a scrape-down it's quite unreal.
#2:
I can just hear him saying there can be only one!
#3
Very much inspired by an =][= model lodged somewhere in the old noodle.
And #4:
Debating plain ol pointy finger o doom or another with book. Also not 100% on his big Zurg face (I swear, give him a psilencer and a hood and the look would be complete!)
So, C&C appreciated as ever. A busy weekend, but going to get my game face back on soon as!
Later mes amis!
I think it should read " Never hold the weapon in one hand" Serious injury could occur thus voiding any Mfg said warranties" Mfg is not responsible for poor die rolling when using this weapon inappropriately.
and as a man he won't read the instructions ( thus modelled )
Thou shalt count to threeeee, and three is the number thou shalt count... (etc. etc.)
I'm so lucky to have been born at a time when PBS in Chicago showed Monty Python every Sunday night. I think most kids now-a-days have no clue. When I was in grade school, you didn't dare come to school the following Monday unless you'd seen both MPFC and Saturday Night Live the weekend before.
Thanks guys, they're proving fun to do. Meantime, a quick pic update, nothing special just blocking in colours on Stern - key thing being I was able to do a bit of focused painting in a relatively short space of time.
The key point here is not so much the paint as the fact I got it done - focused use of a minimal time slot. Despite the vast array of figs facing me I think this may be the way forward, at least for now. If I can do this on a regular basis then there's a light ahead that may not be the southbound train.
Pah. Stern, Draigo, PotAYto, poTAHto... Good catch mate! Draigo it is. Glad the red looks rich enough, it's the one colour that's had multiple layers (VJ terracotta> GC purple shading>VJ terracotta>GC bright red wet blended on raised sections). Btw, your weeper is not forgotten, he got ink washed last night but I'm not happy with the effect do might require a major rethink.
And lo, the mega update. I got so into doing Draigo I dragged out a whole bunch of half finished termies. Here's the results, hope y'all like what you see.
So, here he is: Draigo. I'm really happy with the skull in the blade, though I'm not sure how well the pic shows it.
This is actually a ghost knight, not a Paladin. I know, not exactly ghostly. It's more the loadout (sword/shield), which pulls double time for ghost and regular termies. This one, the justicar, was briefly also count-as Draigo. Hence his place at the daddy table today.
On the subject of Justicars, the Paladin Justicar. In retrospect, I should've gouged a chunk out the KoS head and made a gs impression of the =][= logo (so I've done that elsewhere now). Love the pose though.
Paladin Incinerator. I really want to call this guy Bernie...
Because I'm an obsessive, I have to do Psilencers too. I still have no idea where that base skull originates.
Aaaaand finishing the big guns
Paladin Apothecary; I can't escape the fact that, at some point, I'll need to make one with a Warding Stave, too. This was particularly useful for deciding how to paint the unit of Bloodletters I have dismembered on PAGK bases...
Standard Bearer, along with a string of detail shots to show gratuitous base corpse! Again, fun playing with contrasting paint techniques.
A "regular" Paladin, this time. Well, got to have some, I guess. Biker legs rule for SM/CSM corpses...
And another, who I *think* was actually the very first built. And that's a Mentor Legion helm in the Chaos Sorceror's hand
And finally a unit shot, including the test model I did wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy back at the start (2nd row, on the right):
I have painted a unit. Hand on heart, I'm pretty sure that's a first.
Thanks gang! The C&C are what help sustain this, and my remaining sanity.
@ gits - ha! Funny guy. I do have some touch ups on a LRR, NDK and a =][= dude to do, will try my utmost. I want me a tank pool!
@ albinoork - muchas gracias, I'm a big fan of your work as you know. The white is black prime, white heavy drybrush, sepia wash, white drybrush, sepia wash, and then 2 thin layers of white followed by a final touch up.
@rm2020 - I lurve VJ Dark green
@s_l - coming from you I am humbled. At the end of the day, I know they're not the best painted, but a coherent serviceable and distinctive look is what I'm after! Achievement unlocked!
Like the darker, kinda gritty color scheme (more interesting than the shiny silver standard scheme, IMO). But I especially like the scenic bases, with CSM and Daemons felled by your dudes.
@ catharsix: cheers bud. The idea came from one of my very first visits to a gw store when I was about 10, and saw a whole pile of figs just drybrushed bgm - clearly, it lodged in my brain. As for the corpses o'chaos, there's more to come
But, for now, some touch ups on old figs, and a rebase of a gms (g=I=s?) from HowardATreesong:
Me and my awkward d-style bases...
The land raider crusader, finally with a multimelta turret (that's a FW razorback turret, if y'all were wondering)
@dss: indeed, though he does also have arm and leg plates off a dread on the baby carrier to beef him up a bit. That tabard of Karamazov is a beaut, however.
@miss dee: yup. Ta!
@gitsplitta: yeah, it's cracking, isn't it? Had to saw the bottom off very carefully! Btw, at your recommendation I've invested in a set of small fw eagles to finish off the assassins.
What next for the Bloggit? Well let's ask mrs graven...
Imperial bastion, apparently. *shrug* she's the boss and, hey, I like the variety.
inmygravenimage wrote:Funnily enough I got roped into one of those dancing things.. But that's another story eh?
I'm being a little unfair, they did put up with my general geekness for some years I just think they assumed I'd grow out of it. Thing is, getting older just means you can afford to buy the toys you want yourself.
Anyway, a mini update, or rather a mini-me update: #1 son did some painting of his grot tank. I primed it for him (he chose all the parts from my bitzbox, I just did the gluing), and painted the gobbo green, he did the rest: he chose the yellow, drybrushed it, want to use a sponge for shiny bits (note chipping on dozer blade), muddied it (sepia wash) and then cleaned it yellow again (drybrushed highlights). Not bad for a 3 1/2 year old, eh?
Not that I'm a pushy parent or anything...
3 AND A HALF!!!!!!!!
*Sit's in corner crying*
I can't paint like that after 5 years of the hobby !!
Mate, I honestly think he's better than me - don't sweat it! He's not actually done any painting in ages, though he did find a pile of tanky bits and built another lunatic jalopy the other day; holidays coming up, gonna get some quality nerd time with my boy.
Drybrushing and washing's an easy way to teach kids, it's what I've done with my nephews too. To be fair, it's my style of painting (ie easy/lazy) so maybe that's why I favour it...
inmygravenimage wrote:@ catharsix: cheers bud. The idea came from one of my very first visits to a gw store when I was about 10, and saw a whole pile of figs just drybrushed bgm - clearly, it lodged in my brain. As for the corpses o'chaos, there's more to come
I've been spending a bunch of time making scenic bases with skulls, wreckage, artifacts, debris, casualties, etc. I probably spend as much time on converting the bases as I do the troops!
Well, I better get back to the wife and the wee bairn. Keep up the good work!
@gits: when i first got back into 40k I recycled my urban war figs as ig. The chamfered bases stuck as a look I like, I guess.
@C6: indeedy, and most talented you are. I hear you when it comes to bases!
Just a wee note from me to explain the hiatus after the flurry of activity at the start of the week: end of term, generally crazy, and now my folks are a-visiting. I have a day completely to myself Weds, so you can hopefully expect a decent update then. I'm trying to cobble together another Vindicare in rare spare moments for the GMS; if I can do his arns and rest of head I'll post tomorrow.
@Miss Dee: I mean post on dakka, not post via royal mail.
@llamahead: that one is dark eldar raider legs, Deldar torso back, eldar torso front, Deldar arms, scout sniper rifle, wolf scout head. Wip of one using eldar legs:
I might have the bits to build another if you want one.
Actually picked up a set of the classic four on ebay. I've even managed to pick up Kassalis Venin to use as a Venenum assassin. Now if you've got any ideas on how to do a Vanus hacker assassin I'm all ears......I need some ideas to consider stealing. Infinity's my most likely port of call I reckon.......
Hey gang,
Just a quick heads up: massive update heading your way, possibly even tonight or certainly tomorrow. Should be WIPs of assassins, Sanctum Sororitas, death kult and other members of the =][= posse, and of course the big honoured imperium sm dude who's been turned into a GK statue. If I get any requests for what you want to see first, I'll get them up pronto.
Later?
graven
Love the look on the grey knights, especially like what you did on the sword . Just when you think you've see it all someone comes up with a new cool look. Kudo's.
No thanks I have a specific idea. I'm going for a far more academic restrained look than the rest. I want a Cyborg librarian style thing.......Although to make it even more awkward not in the Dirz style.
@ llamahead: maybe the dkok quartermaster's retinue bot?
@ S_L: thanks mate that means a lot. Given that tomorrow's main focus will be painting GKs, especially so! You should I hope be a happy bunny/Lion by end of day
So I got a little bit of further modification done to my Sanctum Sororitas, including a door and tapestries:
That's an =][= icon that the camera's helpfullly glinting off at the top Whilst I doubt this'll get done tomorrow, that's it properly blinged up now. Pimp my chapel, etc. I have to paint the statue first (wife rules, and all that) and the pagk horde are a priority.
On a side note - and I know I'm late to this party - I went and had a look at the new paints today. If I don't track down more gryphone sepia I shall probably cry. The powdery drybrush paints are interesting, but I'd really worry about adhesion, the washes are unconvincing - red which is "best" is emphatically violet - and new base coats colours seem sludgy at best. I'd like to try the new black undercoat - it looks very gloss, almost Vj model color black.
Hmm. On the other hand, I was highly tempted by a full set of Vj game color paints in my flgs today. Suddenly £120 doesn't seem so much.
If your thinking about Vallejo have a look on here http://www.paint4models.com/index.html for the comparison to what you need. I'm gradually switching over as I go 30pish less a pot adds up over time....
So at the missus' behest, the aforementioned verdigris job on the statue. Very happy with how this turned out:
I've tidied that blob of dwarf bronze subsequently. Bloomin' close-up photos.
Left some of the joins un-gs'd: it's a cast statue, innit?
Hmm. gs on the book looks a bit blobby. Nuts.
Tis gw. I added much fw brass etch and a kitbashed wrist mounted storm bolter.
In other news I bought expanding spray insulation foam today. Any guesses what for?
I haven't checked here in a while. Seems like I'm missing some really cool stuff.
I'm really liking that weaping Angel and the Home made Assassins.
And the Statue is just plain Awesome.
@wm360: nope. Gaming related. Guess again @s_l: thank ye kindly sir. I thought about using Vj verdigris glaze also but am dissuaded.
@flyingpooo: many thanks - weepers are fun to do. Half wish I done all my marines that way *shrug* dunno what I'll do without gryphone sepia though. Assassins are just cos I'm easily distracted and cheap!
The foam is for creating smoke plumes, btw. I've done some test plumes and walls of smoke. Now, for bombed out rhino...
Automatically Appended Next Post: Mwa-ha-ha-haaaa!
I'd like to see that painted, now it just looks like a black sludge monster is eating the Rhino. It could just be lighting though. That would look awesome painted in a dark grey.
Or, you could paint it a sickly green and it would be the biggest Nurgly growth ever.
You're right on the money. I got over-excited and took a pic while it was still wet. I'm going for some thing between diesel smoke and daemonic being. Here's some wip pics:
I'm considering some khornate limbs emerging from the smoke.
Looks a bit odd from the front as you can't actually see the rhino very well, so it looks like the vehicle is encased in some odd kind of stone. Painting might solve that though.
Diesel smoke? I had to google it and I found a great reference pic.
Spoiler:
If you painted it something that with some glowing red Khornate energies swirling within the smoke and Khornate limbs flying everywhere the effect would just be spectacular.
Thanks guys. Comments all valued mightily.
@gits: fair point; I actually don't necessarily want it to be immediately obvious that there's a tank there, as I think it distracts from the SR itself, whilst from the back you can appreciate the rhino itself. The aim was to make smoke directional, as if blown by the down draft of the SR.
@ RM2020: thanks bud! Good to hear from you again!
@ Flying Pooo: funny, that was exactly the reference pic I used. I agree, hopefully the addition of evil yness will sort.
I've been adding bits of red and green to it, once I've added other block colours I'll stick a proper pic up.

I've tidied that blob of dwarf bronze subsequently. Bloomin' close-up photos.
Left some of the joins un-gs'd: it's a cast statue, innit?
Hmm. gs on the book looks a bit blobby. Nuts.
Well, I like him
Next up - Storm Raven. Lordy.
Adios,

Could you possibly explain your technique or give a mini-tuitorial on the Verdigris?
I have two of these statues in need of this effect and yours looks excellent.
Thanks very much! Sure, but I use some pretty random paints, and don't know the new gw ones *hiss* I can, however approximate.
1. Prime black
2. Drybrush codex grey
3. Db dwarf bronze or equivalent
4. Heavy Db military dark green - 50/50 catachan and bestial brown should do it
5. Light Db bestial brown.
6. Db pale blue - 50/50 shadow grey & ultramarine
7. Paint above thinned about 2:1 into shadows, creases, cracks, under rivets - wherever water would run into.
8. Db dwarf bronze again.
9. Lightly Db fortress grey.
Much less hassle than it sounds, it's very quick as it's so much Db work!

Looking good but the statue needs some "bird" poo IMHO (just saying.... probably because it would give a focus point to the statue, also big bronze statues and birds...)
