Apart from the Vril there are other options. They can split the factions, Italy, Japan and Germany make up the Axis and all still have their own army and walker designs. The allies are even more countries and the SSU consists of Russia and China. And then there are the neutral countries like Argentina.
So there are ways to create other factions that in the background are on the same side but that doesn't mean they always get along.
I hope that the Vril aren't the little Grey aliens. Of course, some abductees have reported tall Greys, and even some Nordic ET's that could almost pass for ordinary Earth people. And then there are also the Reptillians that David Icke is always spouting off about. (Just so where's clear, I do not endorse his beliefs. I consider the Pope and the Queen mum perfectly capable of serious world-class evil without being alien shape shifters.)
Okay, I went and did some quick research, and it seems the Vril aren't aliens after all. Oh well, hope remains.

Considering what the Hecaton looks like, I don't think we have much to worry about. "I've started HECATON project thanks to Paolo Parente, the creator of DUST. He asked me to create a subject for his fantastic world, precisely for Vrill alien robo-army." Bit old, yes, but I wouldn't honestly expect too far astray of that.

I was asking if the background was more detailed than that available in DT, not the rules

I would say there is as much background as in the AT-43 core book. So you get more fluff than in DT but it is still not an in-depth look on every faction.

The new home for a better future
Established as a beacon of communism, the city of Zverograd was once the pride the Soviet Union, but a strange discovery underneath the city changed everything. Now, the Axis and Allies barrage the city, possessed with securing whatever waits below the city for themselves. The Soviets still defend their prize, but now they march into battle with their Chinese allies as the Sino-Soviet Union.
Fight for the future with the hero of Operation “Zverograd” and her customized walker. A legendary soldier, Koshka enters battle inside “Grand’ma,” an altered KV47. She is the first hero in Dust Tactics to feature pilot skills, allowing her to pilot her walker during the battle. Deploy Koshka and lead the forces of the SSU to victory in five exciting scenarios and an optional prologue scenario!
The Operation “Zverograd” campaign expansion also includes components for a single level of the building set, exciting new rules and skills, and background information for the SSU. We’ve already looked at the rules for aircraft, and the unit cards for Koshka and “Grand’ma,” now you can prepare for the invasion by downloading the complete rules (pdf, 3.0MB).

The sole reason for a seperate book is:
That way it was much easier to focus on the two existing factions and balancing them out. SSU was still not final when the book was written and instead of rushing it, it was prefered to wait until the SSU are gold and then balancing them out with the rest. Also this gives us more space for each faction to write about.

So you can get the Zverograd book for DW for $20, but if you want the models, you gotta get the DT expansion also for $45? So, around $65 just to start playing the SSU? Or do you not need the DT expansion and you can just build your army from other models also available?

Correct me if I'm wrong but what models in question are we talking about? Every campaign expansion for DT comes with one or two exclusive minis sure but thats not a whole army.
Unless you meant the specific rules for DT in which case yes I believe you need the DT Expansion to get things like Fliers and etc

Well - you need a pdf editor, either a free one or the Adobe full version.
If FFG has blocked editing even that will not help.

FFG just announced and released a nice battlemat (24.95$ limited supply):
http://store.fantasyflightgames.com/productdetails.cfm?SKU=DTSN27
A Whole New Battlefield
Introducing the Dust Tactics Premium Playmat, Available Now
FFG, 15th June
An explosion sent rubble flying through the air. Shards of concrete ripped through sandbags and flesh. This was it. There wasn’t time to reconsider. Sgt. Johnson leveled his barrel and began to fire. He could see bullets sparking off the walker’s armor, but it wasn’t slowing down. Its every step thundered along the battlefield…
The new Dust Tactics Premium Playmat allows players to take their games of Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare to a whole new battlefield! Available now through our Dust Tactics Premium webstore, the top-quality Dust Tactics Premium Playmat allows you to maneuver your armies across a durable and attractive 33” x 22” play surface.
Advanced Reconnaissance
Every good general seeks to gain the full measure of the battlefield, so here’s more information about the newest terrain at the center of the furious combats in the alternate-reality World War II of Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare.
- This 33” x 22” x 1/8” playmat weighs twenty-seven ounces, enough to keep it from sliding around, making it a stable surface for your games.
- The dual-sided playmat features a nine-by-six grid for the board game action of Dust Tactics and an identical, gridless surface for the intense tabletop battles of Dust Warfare.
- You can combine two Dust Tactics Premium Playmats to form the same twelve-by-nine grid available from the two fold-out maps from the Revised Core Set, but on a more durable surface.
Bring Your Battles to Life
With the Dust Tactics Premium Playmat and the three-dimensional structures from the Building Accessory Pack and Operation “Cerberus,” you can more clearly envision the dramatic action and high-stakes skirmishes of Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare. Infantry and combat walkers fire at each other along the coast, between warehouses in the docks of southern England, or in the streets of Zverograd.

I also was rather sceptical with the helicopter. I got the box as a present and in real life it looks better than on the pictures. As for the 40k-vehicles, you have to ignore the soldier-vehicle-relation .
But I like the style, it fits to the rest of the army. I wanted to skip the russians as I still have a lot to paint, but now I got several boxes...
And I am happy that -at least- the SSU figures are packed in bigger plastic bags, therefore the weapons, arms etc... are not bent as the Axis and Allied figures were. I hope FFG will replace the tiny bags there aswell!

And no one is stopping anyone from modelling the game pieces - I saw a guy do Poles with wings and stuff recently. They aren't multi-part kits, but ingenuity goes a long way.

Arise, thread, arise from the fourth page!
http://new.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3412
Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of Operation “Hades” for Dust Tactics!
When invading Axis forces descended into the sewers of Stalingrad to move about the city unimpeded, the Soviets sent their own troops underground to stop them. The bitter fighting that took place there marked the beginning of the RattenKrieg, or “Rats’ War.” The confined spaces and narrow sewer tunnels became a hellish battlefield, unlike any before seen in the history of warfare. The claustrophobic environment was perfect for traps and ambushes, and every squad knew that death could be waiting for them around the next corner. The Rats’ War may have come to life in Stalingrad, but it plays an even larger and deadlier role beneath the city of Zverograd.
Scheduled to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2012, Operation “Hades” introduces new rules for subterranean warfare, superhuman soldiers, new skills, and richly detailed information about the city and battleground of Zverograd. It also brings you thirty-one tiles, a Zverograd city poster, a map of the Zverograd metro, six new scenarios, and over two dozen objectives to serve as the basis of your own scenarios. Finally, Operation “Hades” marks the arrival of Winter Child, the game’s first superhuman soldier.
War in the Underground
Operation “Hades” introduces new rules for underground fighting, as well as rules more specifically designated for scenarios fought in Zverograd’s sewers and metro.
During underground combat, troops must cope with dim lighting and confined quarters. There is very little light beneath the city of Zverograd. Units can hear enemies coming,
but they are hard to make out in the darkness. As a result, it’s not uncommon for soldiers in such tense conditions to fire blindly into the shadows ahead of them when they hear enemies approaching. The darkness of the underground grants a unit increasing levels of cover the farther it is from an attacking unit, and units cannot target foes with four or more spaces between them.
Additionally, there’s not much headroom underground. In caves or in the sewers, the ceilings are very low. It’s only slightly better in the metro. The stress and darkness may cause troops to waste ammo, firing blindly into the dark, but troops are also limited in their movements. Units cannot use the Jump skill while fighting underground.
With these rules (which we’ll explore in greater detail later), players can experience entire scenarios set in Zverograd’s sewers and metro, or they can join two or more boards together and designate locations where units can exit one map and enter the other. Altogether, the subterranean combat of Operation “Hades” opens up exciting new dimensions for the battles of Dust Tactics!
Winter Child
For years, Earth’s major powers have been working on different ways to create superhuman soldiers. Many of these research programs began long before the war, but
they received considerably more funding when it began. The SSU were years late in the discovery and practical applications of VK, but while the Axis were creating the first combat walkers, the SSU spent their time working on ways to create superhumans by enhancing the powers of the mind.
At length, their trials bore fruit, but the SSU were unable to duplicate their results. Thus, Colonel Ivan Vasiliev, the first SSU superhuman, remains a hero apart from the rest of humanity. In his magnificently crafted battle armor, Colonel Vasiliev, also known as “Winter Child,” towers above those around him, but few of them expect that their fantastic hero wears such armor not to protect himself, but to protect them from the inhuman energy he constantly radiates.
Operation “Hades” introduces new rules for superhumans, and these powerful units function like heroes, except that they cannot join other squads. Still, their tremendous abilities, defense, hit points, and attack lines are likely to make superhumans like Winter Child an exciting part of Dust Tactics as the game moves forward.
Your Dust Tactics Campaign Toolbox
Operation “Hades” comes with six pre-built scenarios that thrust you squarely into the tense action of underground fighting. However, the possibilities are all but endless when it comes to the scenarios that can be generated within the besieged city of Zverograd.
Going beyond the basic scenarios, Operation “Hades” provides you a wealth of information, which you can use to create your own custom scenarios. You can learn about the city’s layout from a poster, map, and pages of detailed information on a number of key locations. Meanwhile, key objectives are scattered throughout the city, each with its own special properties and tactical advantages, and many are linked to each other by Zverograd’s metro tunnels and sewer lines, creating unique combat situations both above and below ground.
Operation “Hades” encourages players to create their own scenarios in the war-torn city of Zverograd, and it offers numerous Gaming Notes to help spur your imagination.
Dust Tactics Premium Edition
As with all our Dust Tactics products, players will have the opportunity to pick up Operation “Zverograd” in either the unpainted Dust Tactics version or the masterfully pre-painted Dust Tactics Premium Edition version.
The Premium version of Operation “Zverograd” brings you a Winter Child professionally painted in loving detail, according to the art direction of Vincent Fontaine, the head of Dust Studio. With his fine metallic armor and the pulsing blue of his radiation beam, the Premium Winter Child is an intimidating presence on the battlefield and a stunning addition to any SSU army.
Winter Child comes unpainted in the Dust Tactics version of Operation “Hades” (left), where the Dust Tactics Dust Tactics Premium Edition version comes with one Winter Child miniature and two heads. You can choose whether to fully enclose Winter Child in his armor and helmet (center) or to remove his helmet to give him a more personal view of the battlefield (right).
War is Hell
Despite soldiers’ bravery and the inspiring leadership of an army’s greatest heroes, war claims its toll. Now, as the fighting in Zverograd moves toward the terrifying enclosures of the city’s sewers and metro, the darkness is everywhere, and the sounds of gunfire are inescapable. Is that a zombie’s guttural growl you hear through the darkness? Is that the echoing footfall of an armored soldier? Are those words of Russian real or manifestations of your fears?
Get ready for some of the tensest, deadliest, and most thrilling battles of Dust Tactics when you explore the wealth of options brought to you in Operation “Hades.”
The fifth campaign expansion for Dust Tactics, Operation “Hades” is scheduled to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2012.

As you've shown above, they're a reasonably realistic design, and the advanced tech is still pretty new, there's got to be some elements of all armies that are still coping with older vehicles.

I will actually be releasing a fan-made campaign book for historical tanks for Warfare soon. Tomorrow starts previews on Dust-War.com.

The plane is supposed to be a prototype right now; but that said it is pretty reminiscent of early jets.
At least if early jets were created by the Nazis with alien technology at their disposal as well.

Nod. It's clearly reminiscent of the ME262. Though squished up a bit for production and sales purposes (same as the Soviet choppers being chibi-ised)

Post by: Duncan_Idaho
Actually it is not the Me 262 (we even do have some working 262 flying over here from time to time).
The sources are:
Henschel 129 (weapon gondola)
Horten flying wings
Komet
and little elements from all the German VTOL experiments.

I see elements of all of those - the canopy and overall form is very 163 - but the main jet turbines are very reminiscent of the 262.

The turbines are a standard design and nearly all jet prototypes (over 100 designs) had very similar looking turbines.

The war for the fate of the world is heating up with the addition of four new expansions for Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare! Unveiled last weekend at Gen Con Indy 2012, these new units bring a range of options to all three factions. For the SSU, the IS-48 Super-Heavy Tank is an unstoppable powerhouse, while the Red Guard Assault Squad is made up of some of the world’s most inventive and cunning soldiers. To respond to this threat, the Axis fields its Heavy Antitank Grenadiers, and the Allies attack under cover of night with their British Commandos Kill Squad!
We’re pleased to announce that all four of these versatile expansions are coming in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Something for Everyone
The IS-48 Super-Heavy Tank, Karl Marx, is perhaps the most powerful ground vehicle in the world. Armed with the brand new Heavy Tesla Gun, this tank is a dire threat to infantry and vehicle units alike. Designed by the SSU, the tank’s deadly Tesla cannon ignores cover, wipes out out enemy squads in a single burst, and “explodes” for tremendous damage against enemy vehicles. When the IS-48 Super-Heavy Tank takes the battlefield it instantly becomes the centerpiece of any army.
Backing up their new armored behemoth are the SSU’s famous Red Guards Infantry Regiments, and the Red Guards Assault Squad consists of some of the best soldiers on the planet. Joining a unit of the Red Guards is an honor for any SSU soldier; it means that he has made it through the selection process and survived one of the world’s toughest training programs. With their PPSh-48, DPM MG, UGLs, and Molotov cocktails, these Guards are capable of dealing critical damage to unwary foes.
Not to be outdone, the Axis and Allies each bring significant firepower. The development of heavy body armor allowed the Axis to deploy its soldiers into the deadliest of combat zones at lightning speed, often well before they could mobilize long-range support. Axis engineers worked tirelessly to develop long-range weaponry for these elite soldiers, and the result was the Caseless PaK 7.5 cm. With this formidable weapon, the Axis Heavy Antitank Grenadiers are deadlier than ever. The Heavy Antitank Grenadiers share a single base and come with a special card with three health boxes, like on a hero card.
Meanwhile, the British Commandos Kill Squad provides players with three carefully sculpted miniatures that they can configure as either a British Commandos Kill Squad or a French Foreign Legion Kill Squad. Either of these Allied Kill Squads can rain death upon enemy infantry with its 50W Phaser Rifles. The British Commandos back up their firepower with the Scout skill while the French Foreign Legion Kill Squad can use its Assault skill to execute a vital tactical maneuver once per game.

Oh look, a walking Chimera.
It is the year 1947, and World War II continues to rage and spread to new battlefields. In the streets of Zverograd, the SSU mount a desperate defense against Allied and Axis forces. From the tops of the city’s few remaining buildings, soldiers fill the air with bullets and pave the streets with blood. Combat walkers march through the alleyways and dominate city squares. Amidst the chaos of crossfire, army commanders on all sides seek new ways to seize control of key tactical locations.
Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of the Axis Armored Transport and the SSU’s KV-3 Heavy Walker, two tough new units for Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare!
Axis Armored Transport
Axis generals respond to the ubiquitousness of enemy fire by deploying their new Axis Armored Transport. This hulking transport unit is a new sight on battlefields around the world, and its ability to shelter valuable infantry as it carries them safely past light rifle fire has granted new tactical advantages to the Axis military.
Axis engineers have developed two primary configurations for the Armored Transport, each of which features Advanced Reactive Fire, Carry Capacity: 6, and six hit points to keep troops out of harm’s way.
The first configuration, the Prinzluther marks the game’s debut of the Command Vehicle skill. Any unit with the Command Squad skill or NCO Command Squad skill that takes shelter within its plated hull can still communicate with the outside world via the Prinzluther’s modern communications arrays, antennas, and radars. Furthermore, such a squad gains additional benefit from this extensive collection of communications technology. Not only can a squad issue directives from safely within the vehicle’s interior, it may, once per round, reroll any failed die results when checking to see if it can successfully use one of its special abilities.
The success of the Prinzluther inspired the transport’s second configuration, the Sturmprinz. The Sturmprinz is becoming ever more popular among Axis officers fighting in rough terrain. Its mobility and large transport capacity has made it one of the most popularly requested vehicles among Axis battle groups worldwide. More heavily armed than the Command variant, the Sturmprinz can transport six soldiers on the inside with its Carry Capacity, and can still carry six more Tank Riders on the outside. While only those soldiers riding on the inside receive full protection, those on the outside can use their weapons and help safeguard the Sturmprinz itself.
KV-3 Heavy Walker
Meanwhile, the SSU gains traction on the battlefield with another powerful walker capable of flushing out their foes and then holding the ground they secure. Built up from the chassis of a captured Axis “Luther,” reinforced, and equipped with the SSU’s most effective armaments, the KV-3 Heavy Walker can be configured into either the Babushka, a lethal anti-infantry machine, and the Matrioshka, which provides SSU armored divisions with a solid antitank unit.
Proud heir to a long line of heavy tanks, the KV-3 M “Babushka” was designed to break up infantry assaults with its brand new rapid-fire guns. This powerful walker can level an incredible amount of firepower against troops and lightly armored targets, though it lacks reliable antitank weapons. Nonetheless, the Babushka has enough health to weather a few shots, which is all it needs to make short work of enemy infantry.
Considered by many in the SSU to be the best caliber antitank weapon ever designed, the 152mm gun, once adapated and married to the first captured “Luther” by SSU engineers, gave birth to the famed KV-152 series. Afterwards, Soviet engineers went further, adapting it to the newly developed KV-3 chassis. Thus, the model “K” was born, and it quickly proved itself to be a deadly machine. Now, the KV-3 K “Matrioshka” is now requested by nearly all SSU armored divisions. This solid antitank unit is designed to go head-to-head against enemy armor, and it does its job well.
Together, the Babushka and Matrioshka create a force that few enemies are capable of withstanding. In tandem, these two walkers rip apart troops and vehicles alike, making the KV-3 a winning addition to SSU forces engaged in the world’s deadliest war zones.
Pre-Painted Premium Miniatures March Straight to Battle
As soon as these Dust Tactics units are available at retailers near you, we’ll also have professionally pre-painted versions available on our webstore through our Dust Tactics Premium line. Each Premium Edition miniature is painstakingly detailed according to the art scheme developed by Vincent Fontaine, master painter and Dust Studio’s Art Director. These Premium Edition miniatures are as close as you can get to the world of Dust Tactics without having to seek shelter from incoming mortars and laser fire!
Whether you wish to customize your own vehicles or field any army of battle-ready, pre-painted Premium Edition units, these upcoming expansions add muscle to your army. Look for the Axis Armored Transport and KV-3 Heavy Walker to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Units available or soon available
SSU - 17
Axis - 16
Allies - 15
So not a huge difference in units, and considering the upcoming expansion is SSU vs Axis focused, it's not surprising. Patience will be rewarded, and in the meantime, Allies still have double Firedrop lists that generally wreck everything else.
oh and...
The Axis soldiers took cover as the tank approached, but to no avail. Rolling forward on its treads, the IS-48 A “Karl Marx” rounded the corner, swiveled its turret, and fired two beams of energy down the corridor that ripped through buildings and debris and metal and flesh alike. The Axis Luther exploded in a spray of shrapnel as the soldiers’ last cries were drowned by the crackle of the superheated air. The skirmish was done as soon as it had begun, and Commissar Captain Nikolaï Dimitrievich Starinov had earned yet another spotless victory.
The time has come to infuse your SSU army with a heavy dose of heroism. The SSU Hero Pack Expansion for Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare is now available at retailers everywhere and online through our webstore!
The SSU Hero Pack introduces three exceptional heroes to lead the forces of the SSU into battle. Yakov Pavlov is well known for his leadership on the battlefield, SMERSH agent Red Yana is an extraordinary fighter, and Nikolaï is a distinguished tank commander and crack shot.
Each of these extraordinary individuals greatly bolsters the strategies of the SSU forces they support. In previews, we looked at the tactics and impacts of both Yakov and Red Yana. Now, as you consider whether or not you want to deploy these heroes to the frontline, we’ll take a look at the expansion’s third hero, Commissar Captain Nikolaï Dimitrievich Starinov.
Nikolaï
While Nikolaï can theoretically join up with any SSU infantry squad with two armor to give them a little extra spine and firepower, no SSU general would dare to do so! This is because his Pilot skill makes Nikolaï far more effective behind the controls of one of the SSU’s most powerful tanks.
While piloting a tank, Nikolaï bolsters the vehicle with his Take Aim (Pilot) skill.
As an example, the IS-48 A “Karl Marx” is arguably the most powerful ground vehicle in the world, but though its Tesla weaponry can eradicate entire firing lines of troops and walkers, it can also be tricky. The tank’s Heavy Tesla Gun fires a beam of energy that tears through everything in its line up to a range of six. Still, while it functions like both a flamethrower and a laser in terms of avoiding cover, dealing massive damage, and exploding on its hits, its gunners get just two dice to make their shots count. Taking a sustained attack greatly increases your chances of success, but adding Nikolaï to the increases them even more. Furthermore, Nikolaï’s ability truly shines while firing the Karl Marx’s deadly Heavy Tesla Gun because his hits have two times as much a chance of exploding as those by any other pilot.
The SSU have labored long and hard to master the VK technology used against them by Axis forces, and as they now catch up, Nikolaï helps their forces make the most of every tank they’ve got!
Leadership You Can Use
Each of the heroes in the SSU Hero Pack Expansion possesses tremendous skills that can guide your SSU army to victory. Fielding one or more of them greatly enriches your available tactics and allows you to better customize your strategy.
The SSU Hero Pack Expansion is now available at retailers everywhere as well as online through our webstore.
Players looking to find these miniatures professionally pre-painted according to the art schemes by Vincent Fontaine, Dust Studio’s Art Director, can find them available in our Dust Premium-Edition Miniatures webstore.

As the owner of about a thousand AT-43 and Dust figures, they are pretty much exactly the same, with AT-43 having better quality sculpts from the last few releases (most notably, the Oni Super Zombies and Cog Gunmen and Hunters). Dust are a little more pliable (with the exception of the first run of AT-43 plastics, which were really bendy), which made it very easy when I converted a ton of the Laser Grenadiers into ONI Korps infantry.

Swooping in for the Kill
Paolo Parente Talks About the Aircraft of Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare
Back in May, Operation “Zverograd” and the SSU took the world of Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare by storm. The introduction of this third faction allowed players to pursue wholly new army builds. The SSU’s gritty, hard worn, and resolute armies not only featured all new infantry and combat walkers, they included the game’s first aircraft.
Now the SSU Airborne Transport swoops across battlefields, carrying troops into the thick of action. Two more helicopters are on their way, and fans of Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare who stopped by our booth at Gen Con Indy were excited to see the two Axis flyer prototypes that we showed off in our display case.
Today, we’re happy to share an interview with Paolo Parente, creator of the Dust universe, about these new Axis flyers and the future of aircraft in Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare!
Axis flyer prototypes on display at Gen Con Indy 2012
Interview with Paolo Parente, Creator of Dust
FFG: Aircraft have recently added another exciting dimension to Dust Tactics. What challenges did you face as you worked to incorporate them into the game?
PP: Luckily, Dust Tactics is a pretty straightforward game that allowed us to let air units follow most of the regular movement and shooting rules. The main challenge was to try to represent the fact that aircraft move so much faster than ground units, and this was finally solved by forcing all units targeting an aircraft to be at range of 6 or less.
FFG: What inspired you as you developed your concepts for the different aircraft?
PP: The main inspiration for all our vehicles are the late war and early post-war projects. Late war airplanes were mostly jet fighters since Germany was trying to counter the allied bombing raids over its territory, and they were looking for very fast and radar-equipped night interceptors. However, Dust Tactics does not need jet fighters; we needed to study ground-attack aircraft that could make sense on our type of battlefield.
l decided to develop VTOL aircrafts. These are totally ahead of their time, l know, but perfect for the task. VTOL are slower than jet fighters, and perfectly accomplish the role we need them to fulfill. Also, I could make their wing span shorter, making it possible to play them easily on our tables.
Their lines were inspired by two of my favorite WWII aircrafts – the Axis Horten and the Allied P38 Lightning. Their lines are so unique and different from each other that they’re perfect for the job.
Paolo Parente’s Raid Over Zverograd
FFG: I know it’s often difficult for a creator to choose from among his creations, but can you pick a favorite from among the aircraft? And what brings it closer to your heart?
PP: l really love them both, but my absolutely favorite aircraft will be released next year. It will be for the SSU.
FFG: What about Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare has surprised you the most so far?
PP: The Dust universe being appreciated by so many gamers…it’s just great.
FFG: Anything else you want to share with us today?
PP: l just want to thank the players and fans who keep enjoying our game and miniatures. Their enthusiasm and feedback are very encouraging.
Thanks, Paolo!
We’ve had a lot of fun with the beautiful miniatures from the alternate World War II of Dust Tactics, and we look forward to seeing the skies filled with SSU helicopters and these new flyers.
Meanwhile, until these prototype aircraft are finished and ready for your games of Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare, keep your eyes open for future announcements and previews.

Time to resurrect the thread again. More news on the next Dust Tactics expansion, Operation Hades
Two squads of Red Guards stood behind “The Fonvizin” as he tested the weight of his PPSh-48 and strained to see through the darkness. Everyone was on edge. They had been hunting the Axis for hours, now, through the metro tunnels, but they hadn’t expected anything like this. Lights flickered. Shadows filled the distance. Dripping water made frayed wires snap. And then they heard the slaps of footfalls coming fast from all sides. There were so many of them. The first howl echoed through the tunnels as a giant ape raced forward, smashing through two soldiers with his gauntleted fists, and shrugging off a short volley of bullets…
Recently, we announced the upcoming release of Operation “Hades,” the next campaign expansion for Dust Tactics, which introduces the deadly subterranean struggles of the “Rats’ War.”
Setting the Stage
The term “RattenKrieg” was first used to describe the bitter fighting that took place beneath the city of Stalingrad, where invading Axis forces descended into the sewer system in order to move about the city unimpeded. When the Soviets realized this, they sent their own troops underground to stop the invaders. This marked the beginning of the RattenKrieg, or “Rats’ War.” Beneath the streets, the dark, confined metro lines and narrow sewer tunnels became a hellish battlefield, unlike any before seen in the history of warfare. The claustrophobic environment was perfect for traps and ambushes, and every squad knew that death could be waiting for them around the next corner.
The RattenKrieg may have been born in Stalingrad, but this terrible new form of warfare reached its apex beneath the city of Zverograd. The Axis realized the city’s sewers and metro system provided a route into the city, along which their soldiers could find protection from enemy sniper fire and the dreaded SSU artillery barrages. But the Soviets had not forgotten the lessons they had learned in Stalingrad… and this time they were prepared.
It wasn’t long before the Allies, too, realized the strategic importance of Zverograd’s subterranean warfare. Not only were the battles for the city’s subterranean corridors ultimately impacting the control of valuable lines of movement, but the Allies’ knew their arsenal of powerful close-range weaponry—shotguns, flamethrowers, grenades—would prove extremely effective in the cramped tunnels beneath Zverograd.
The players have arrived. The stage is set. The drama can now begin.
A New Kind of Hell in Operation “Hades”
Operation “Hades” introduces new rules for underground fighting, as well as two new kinds of tiles, each of which comes with their own, specialized terrain rules. When fighting underground, forces have to deal with rules for dim lighting, low ceilings, and limited deployment.
No matter what type of terrain your soldiers contest, there is very little light beneath the city of Zverograd. Units can hear enemies coming, but they are hard to make out in the darkness. Accordingly, units gain cover from each other, depending how many spaces there are between them. When the distance between an attacking and defending unit grows too great, the darkness swallows the defending unit completely, and it simply cannot be targeted.
Meanwhile, there’s not much headroom underground. In caves or in the sewers, the ceilings are very low. It’s only slightly better in the metro. Because of the low ceilings, only soldier units can enter the underground, and units cannot use the Jump skill. Without the support of their combat walkers, soldiers in the underground have to resort to new tactics, and combats in the underground are often won not by the the squad that looks best on paper but the one that responds best to the environment’s unique demands.
As stated above, only soldier units can enter the metro and the sewers. Additionally, these units must enter the battlefield by the end of the second round of the game or risk being left behind. It is akin to suicide to get stranded in the underground, and any unit in an underground scenario that has not been deployed by the end of the second round is considered to be eliminated.
Operation “Hades” also introduces rules for metro lines and sewer tunnels that provide even more terrain-specific flavor to your games. For example, troops marching through the dark, confining labyrinth of Zverograd’s sewers know they’re treading through a deathtrap. They tend to get jittery. Accordingly, the expansion’s new sewer tiles come with rules for “Tense Combat,” wherein all squads gain the advantages of unlimited reactive fire. Unfortunately, just as this is good for you, you’re not the only troops with your fingers constantly resting on their triggers. Your enemy is also nervous and jumpy…
Added Depth
The rules for underground fighting in Operation “Hades” lead to new challenges in several of the expansion’s custom scenarios. However, they can easily apply to other situations as well, breathing new life into old scenarios. For example, a base may have been attacked several times, leaving it in darkness with its power sources completely destroyed. In the darkness, the structure would follow the rules for underground combat, forcing players to modify their tactics accordingly.
Furthermore, Operation “Hades” introduces a wealth of material intended to help players design their own scenarios, including those that combine both underground and surface maps for dynamic, multi-level combats.
Look for Operation “Hades” to add a whole new dimension to your games of Dust Tactics when it arrives.
Fear the dark.

Seize the Skies
Announcing the Upcoming Release of Operation Icarus for Dust Tactics
“Minos may control the land and sea,” said Daedalus, “but not the regions of the air. I will try that way.” So he set to work to fabricate wings for himself and his young son Icarus.
–Bullfinch’s Mythology, “Daedalus”
Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of Operation “Icarus” for Dust Tactics!
While the battle for Zverograd continues to rage, the Allies seek to gain a firmer foothold and strengthen their presence in the area by launching a daring series of raids upon Zverograd’s Axis-controlled airfield. A critical step in Allied efforts to control Zverograd – and one necessary to pave the way for vital Allied air support – Operation “Icarus” is the first thrust of a major assault.
The Allies possess the largest air fleet on the planet. In the skies, their power is currently unmatched, and they know they have to maintain this supremacy in order to achieve global victory. However, in Zverograd, SSU attack helicopters harass ground troops, and new Axis jets cruise the skies. Each bloc realizes the importance of seizing the skies, so as the Allies prepare for their raids against Zverograd’s airfield, they’re bringing their best soldiers, toughest walkers, and deadliest new aircraft.
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3635
Still, the airfield is a wide open space, and cover is limited. While Allied forces excel at close combat, their approach is destined to be deadly. Operation “Icarus” introduces new rules for minefields, the limited cover provided by the trees that line the airfield’s landing strips, and the quonset huts in which the Axis forces await the Allied assault. All these elements come together to create the dangerous new battleground that comes sharply into focus with the seven tense and ferocious scenarios of the Operation “Icarus” campaign.
New Heroes
Operation “Icarus” introduces new heroes for both the Axis and Allies.
Colonel Prince von Furstenwerth is the heir of an old Prussian family. For centuries, his ancestors have been soldiers. Today the “Panzerprinz” is one of the most famous armor commanders in the Axis army. His innovative walker tactics have become legendary, and for them, he has earned the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.
As the Allies press their attack, Axis soldiers rally around their Ace Pilot. Capable of getting his walkers to perform at levels of which most pilots can only dream, the Panzerprinz and those fighting alongside him will offer stern resistance.
In turn, the Allies will hope the stories surrounding their superhuman hero are true. They say that Sergeant Percy Washington can run faster than a horse, tear apart a Luther with his bare hands, and survive direct hits from enemy bullets. With his telekinetic strength, remarkable speed, and uncanny resistance to kinetic weapons, “Sgt. Victory” may provide the Allies just the edge they need to turn the tide of their battle for Zverograd.
At least, Allied commanders know they can count on Sgt. Victory to lend his full support. As he heads to Zverograd, this superhuman soldier seeks not only to rout the Axis, but to look for his missing brother.
Delve Deeper into a War-Torn Zverograd
The action of Operation “Icarus” doesn’t stop with the final battle of the final scenario, however, as the airfield is a vital staging ground for other battles.
Operation “Icarus” builds upon the development of the city of Zverograd begun in Operation “Hades.” Players will find loads of information about the city and its tactically vital locations. Key objectives are scattered throughout the city, each with its own special properties and tactical advantages, and many are linked to each other by Zverograd’s metro tunnels and sewer lines, creating unique combat situations both above and below ground.
Like Operation “Hades,” Operation “Icarus” encourages players to create their own scenarios in the war-torn city of Zverograd, and it offers numerous Gaming Notes to help spur your imagination.
Dust Tactics Premium Edition
As with all our Dust Tactics products, players will have the opportunity to pick up Operation “Icarus” in either the unpainted Dust Tactics version or the masterfully pre-painted Dust Tactics Premium Edition version.
The Premium version of Operation “Icarus” brings you Panzerprinz and Sgt. Victory both professionally painted according to the art direction of Vincent Fontaine, the head of Dust Studio. From the highlights that call out the expressions on their faces to the polish of their boots, each of these Premium heroes is a stunning and stylish addition to any army.

Pre-painted Premium versions of Panzerprinz (left) and Sgt. Victory (right)
When There’s No Other Road
The SSU and Axis forces have closed off the other points of entry to Zverograd. Now, as the world’s greatest militaries battle for control of the crumbling city and the skies above it, the Allies risk everything to establish a greater foothold and a base of operations for their future air strikes.
It’s an all-out offensive fought in the open, and there’s no time to spare. Get ready for fast and furious combats as the Allies seek to seize Zverograd’s airfield in Operation “Icarus.”
The sixth campaign expansion for Dust Tactics, Operation “Icarus” is scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2013.

Are there available army deals?
What is the standard points size?
Can it be compared to any other tabletop game?

Nope, but the starter set has two complete armies in them, which is a great deal. If you want a really great deal, try and track down the first starter set, mega-deal there.

combat engineer wrote:Can anyone shed some light for me on Dust Warefare/ Tactics?

Point 1
I'm hoping you're familiar with 40k models, since I'll be comparing the dust models to them
Infantry model bases are just a smidge larger than 40k infantry base sizes, while the infantry models stand about just a bit taller than a Space Marine. As for vehicles, here's a useful link to give you an idea: http://i931.photobucket.com/albums/ad155/AZNLazuli/Scale2.jpg
Point 2
Not really. Best buy is the core set, which comes with Axis and Allies. Everything else (not counting heroes) are bought individually.
Point 3
300 points, for both Tactics and Warfare.
The Revised Core Set comes with 160pts of units per side, to give you an idea. In my experience, a full game generally has about 9-11 unit choices (counting heroes as separate units in this case) per side. It can drop down to about 6-8 if you spend a third of those points on one of the Heavy Walkers though. The average game of such takes about 40min to an hour to play.
Point 4
I've heard quite a few compare Tactics to Tanhauser, which shares similar theming, but I've not played it so I can't say. I can compare the two to 40k / WFB to some degree.
Tactics
The biggest points here are the grid and card system, as well as the alternating play mechanic. The grid system serves for immediate clarity and simplicity. Being used for both movement and range, the game moves very quickly - considerably quicker than the GW wargames. Never any debates regarding LOS is a beautiful thing. The cards provide an immediate and "always out" reference to any and all rules regarding the units - what weapons they have, weapon damage, unit type, etc. They only lack explanations for special rules listed.
In regards to the alternating play mechanic, this helps provide the focused tactical play. You use one unit, have them shoot and/or move (which can't be used again until the next round), but then the enemy gets to use one of theirs to do the same before you activate one of your other units. You also roll to see who gets to choose to go first or second, at the start of each round - which when combined with the alternating system means that you can choose to take seize the advantage in one situation, while allowing another situation to fall into the advantage of the enemy. Choice is important!
Warfare
This naturally retains a lot of the mechanics of the other wargames you see - with a few notable exceptions. Importantly, there's no alternating mechanic here - a player uses their entire army, then the other player does so.
The biggest diversion, I think, would be the Reactions. Whenever one of your units moves within 12" of an enemy unit, that unit (if able) may immediately perform a reaction - either firing at your unit, or moving away. This restricts how many actions they perform come the opponents turn, and they can not react if they have reacted previously.
The other one would be the Order system. At the start of each round, you roll one dice per unit you have. The player who scores the least hits goes first. After that has been decided, the player going first issues an amount of orders equal to the amount of hits he rolled. Orders allow one units to perform a single acount outside of the main phase, though it limits them in other ways. Before the main phase starts, the other player then issues one order per hit they got (which will always be more than the first player).
In general, it means that Warfare is arguably much more fluid than other wargames, and has a lot of player interaction (ie, players both doing things in either turn).

Following the announcement of the german flyer for Dust Tactics, there's a book featuring the new units for Dust Warfare
While the war over Zverograd continues, the Allies hope to strengthen their position in the area by launching a daring series of raids upon the city’s Axis-controlled airfield. Such a move will pave the way for vital Allied air support, but can the Allies keep the pressure on against an entrenched Axis presence? And what of the SSU forces, who likewise seek to control the region? As the battle heats up, all three blocs must struggle to secure the ground, even as they look to the sky.
Not Final Cover Art
Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of Campaign Book: Icarus, a supplement for Dust Warfare! Campaign Book: Icarus introduces a host of new aerial rules, along with a focus on the airfields of Zverograd. New special abilities like Air Superiority give jets the edge in dogfighting, while new platoon upgrades and a variant battle-builder take the war to new heights!
By Ground or Air
With stats for recently announced Allied, Axis, and SSU miniatures, Campaign Book: Icarus’ 48 pages are jam-packed with useful content. The softcover supplement presents details on Zverograd’s crucial airfields, and it features rules for the fearsome new superzombies called Ubertoten, never-before-seen special abilities, and much more.
For players looking for an alternative to the core rulebook’s battle-builder, Campaign Book: Icarus features a variant system that incorporates the game’s new airfield themes. Add conditions like anti-aircraft emplacements that harry incoming enemy jets, or high winds that give helicopter pilots an extra challenge. This, along with new platoon upgrades and rules for Sgt. Victory and Panzerprinz, makes Campaign Book: Icarus a valuable addition to any Dust Warfare player’s library.
Get ready to fight for the skies above Zverograd! Campaign Book: Icarus is coming in early 2013.

Maybe someone on the thread can help me:
What's the difference between the Dust-48 and Dust-35 line? Some walkers are only available in Dust-35 but I am afraid of the scale differences if any.
Can someone give me a clear answer? Do the Dust-35 models fit in with the Dust-48 or are the 35 models meant for collections? For example, I noticed a few figures existed in the 35 collection but were listed as Resin and the exact same ones in the 48 were cheaper & resin/plastic or plastic.
Thanks!

The 35's are like 1/35 scale. and the 48's are 1/48.
The comparisons are 1/35 is like 54mm. and the 1/48 is around 25mm, and the 35's and the 48's are straight up models. 1/48 isn't EXACTLY 25-28mm. they are around the same eye to foot, but the proportionals are slightly smaller. ( Cuffs, leg girths, chest sizes, etc.)
They also have 1/6th sized guys but for around 50 bucks, those are some expensive G.I.Joe/ Action Mans.

There seems to be some similer AE WW2 guys in this game, is there a way to use those guys in the game, along with the Dust guys?
One I saw in particular was on a picture for the extra cards. She is the "German NCO/ Officer" A generic Nazi "She Wolf" figure with the gas mask, riding crop.
I have a starter set from AE WW2 for the Americans. Would they fit in the game with the rest of the faction? They are almost dead on per size and style.

Fantasyflightgames.com wrote:
The SSU infantry hurriedly rounded the corner and began positioning their huge, crackling Tesla Gun. No one spoke. The undead Axis soldiers they were fleeing were not the mindless, slavering creatures they had faced down so many times before. These things were armed, and they moved with a chilling purpose and presence of mind. Grumbling German voices could be heard just around the corner and the SSU hoped their Tesla Gun would be enough to make these Axis abominations more dead than they already were...
The battle continues for the warring factions of Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare. Fantasy Flight Games is excited to announce new units for the Axis, Allies, and the SSU! Read on to learn more about the heavily armed infantry, intelligent undead, and versatile walker coming to the world of Dust.
SSU Heavy Weapons Teams
The SSU Heavy Weapons Teams are focused on bringing some seriously big guns to the Sino-Soviet infantry. The Hailstorm and the Red Lightning units each come equipped with the newest in infantry adapted destructive power. Either of the two units in the SSU Heavy Weapons Teams box will lend an incredible amount of destructive force to the battlefield.
Four brave SSU soldiers make up the SSU Heavy Mortar Team known as Hailstorm. This team looks to pelt their enemies with a 120 mm Mortar capable of loading two different types of ammo. The 120 mm Mortar is capable of a vicious Artillery strike on tanks, or loading a type of heavy round that will easily and utterly destroy any enemy infantry at mid-range. Hailstorm is more than capable of flattening foes at any range.
The Red Lightning unit leverages new Tesla Weapon technology with extremely deadly effect. The SSU has long been working to create weapons that make direct, effective use of electricity itself on the battlefield. Inspired by the research of the brilliant Nikola Tesla, the SSU began the creation of their Tesla Weapons.
Having seen the effectiveness of these weapons when mounted on tanks, the engineers and factories of the SSU have worked feverishly to adapt these incredible pieces of machinery for their infantry. Now, the SSU Tesla Gun Team known as Red Lightning can use this powerful weapon to great advantage, using it to deal damage even in defeat, as the gun may explode and harm all surrounding units in the ensuing blast.
Axis Übertoten Assault Squad
The Axis’ experiments with VK energy resulted in the creation of their abominable Wiederbelebungsserum. When injected with this concoction, the dead rise anew to fight for the Axis, but the Untertoten it creates from corpses are more monster than man. Some soldiers of the Axis have bravely elected to undergo the injection while still living, which has yielded varying results.
The Axis Übertoten Assault Squad is one of the more successful results of these experiments on the living. Nicknamed the Braineaters, these newly augmented troops have retained their sentience, and have been equipped with some powerful weaponry. The new MG 48 and Panzerfaust 100 have been entrusted to these newly dead Axis soldiers. The MG 48 can liquidate enemy infantry in an incredible barrage of bullets, and the Panzerfaust 100 is a particularly potent antitank weapon. With their augmented, undead bodies and powerful equipment, these abominations make for an incredible addition to any Axis team.
Allies Heavy Support Walker
The Allies have been hard at work to ensure that they are ready for any threat that comes at them from the Axis and the SSU. The Allies Heavy Support Walker is their latest piece of versatile VK-powered hardware. The Heavy Support Walker has three configurations, the Long Tom II, the Mobile HQ, and the Skysweeper. Each configuration supplies the Allies with a different advantage, giving the Allies the edge in any confrontation.
Leveraging long-range fire can make or break an engagement, and the Long Tom II is a potent engine of destruction from a distance. Equipped with the Long Tom M2 artillery weapon, this walker can turn the countryside to craters in no time. The efficient design of the Long Tom M2 and the huge supply of ammo on board this walker allows this main gun to be fired without the need to reload, meaning a constant rain of explosive power. The Long Tom II needs to keep its targets at a distance, however, so make sure to hold the line for this powerhouse to be effective.
With all the action on the battlefield, keeping your command units alive and coordinating your troops is vital. To this end, the Allies have converted their newly developed Heavy Support Walker into the Mobile HQ. This command vehicle’s carry capacity of six allows Allied command squad units to hop on board and use the Mobile HQ’s equipment in order to more effectively use their abilities. The Mobile HQ is more than a transport vehicle, however, and it’s equipped with three .50 cal MGs for holding off incoming infantry and any lighter walkers. With expert targeting equipment, the Mobile HQ is also capable of reacting quickly to changes on the battlefield, and is even moderately effective against aircraft! Deploy the Mobile HQ configuration of the Allies Heavy Support Walker to take command of the battlefield.
The Allies are well aware of how quickly the tide can turn when superior air power is in play. Enter the Skysweeper configuration of the Allies Heavy Support Walker. This vehicle aims to keep the airspace above the Allies free of enemies. With its Triple 60 mm AA Gun, enemies will need a miracle if they’re trying fly by the Skysweeper. Once the air is clear, this trio of guns can set its sights on tanks and infantry for an equally deadly effect. Clear the air above the Allies with the Skysweeper!
Premium Pre-Painted Figures
As always, detailed and professionally pre-painted versions of all of these units are available in our Dust Premium Edition Miniatures line. Each of these premium figures is painted according to the detailed art schemes developed by Vincent Fontaine, the art director of Dust Studio.
Whether you choose to get the ready-for-action premium editions of these miniatures or paint your own units in custom style, every faction of the world of Dust will have something potent to bring to the battlefield of Dust Tactics or Dust Warfare!

And the reason I will be playing them as well. I never got into Flames of War. If I did there was no way I would have been able to bring myself to play the German side. Again, I know it's just a game but I just would not be able to do that.

Finally, acknowledgment that spending too much on models makes you a better person and worthy of rewards! My only concern is that the entry point is too low, allowing filthy commoners to undermine the exclusive nature of this club. I want to be certain that I'm only associating myself with people that throw out their armies after every game and buy them new again for the next one.

I really want to know what the exclusive models are.
Otherwise, I really don't see how any sane person can spend any of those price points on dust, there just isn't $2000 word of it to buy.... not like Forgeworld where a $2000 model can happen!

Agreed, I've bought a few things from them, but all put together this is less than $100, so good luck getting the 1k, which you won't hit that soon unless you buy the Premium stuff enmasse.
I'm especially taken aback by their registration fee. Some nerve they got.

Seems awfully reminescent of Call of Duty: Elite and leaves a sour taste for that alone. So they're going to be charging us for the 'privilege' of buying exclusive miniatures and discounts on DLC/mappacks?
Many hobbists and gamers don't like to be reminded that their expenditure is in the thousands.
Dust Warfare isn't even very big yet, it seems like a very, very sour idea.

Dust Chronicles issue 3 will be released on the 1st of December.
Rumor has it that boxes with multiple cards like the Medium Walkers and Gunners sets are on the agenda and so are more boxes that come with two instead of a single unit.

I wouldn't hold my breath for warfare cards. The main reason they released the card deck is because they changed their point system for tactics after the first releases.

Hades releases the new Red Platoon for the SSU, with all associated units. Also, it has Unit Upgrades, new SSU Heavy Tanks, Axis Jagdgrenadiere units (which are a new format for Soldiers), and some Allied Soldier 3 Phaser teams. Very awesome release! Dust-War.com is doing weekly articles starting soon (mine is Wednesday) all about Hades, so keep an eye there for reviews and content.

So instead of errata'ing Laser squads into something useful they add in an upgrade patch to make them even more expensive and a brand new expensive unit with the cheaper points cost they should have had in the first place. Meanwhile Allies are expected to buy the book for Red Devils with head swaps. They couldn't even bother to include the Ubertoten, Long Tom II, and USMC gunners.
I want to like Dust but FFG's post-Warfare support has been abysmal. Tracking down units on their website is a PITA, they refuse to acknowledge that they overnerfed lasers in the move from Tactics to Warfare, and errata takes the worst unit in the Allies army(Steel Rain) and continually makes it weaker.
7722
Post by: em_en_oh_pee
You sound like a butthurt Tactics player.
For one, Lasers are nasty, just not OP.
Second, you don't need the book, because the stats are available online.
And new stuff is due in the next book. They can't fit everything in the book, now can they? Also, the schedule is dictated by Dust Studios a bit for model releases.

Post by: Duncan_Idaho
Floris, your understanding of how and when miniatures stats are released is quite far from the truth.
For beginners there are no miniatures FFG does not want in its line, there are only miniatures who still have no full plastic kit, i.e. the minis from DS are resin/plastic hybrids. And astoundingly it costs quite some money to get metal forms for plastic done.
Also, books have quite a lead time, so not everything can be covered at all times.
46913
Post by: Floris
(edit 2)
In the past it has been stated by Dust Studio that not all models will be made into official releases.
I never claimed that everything can be covered at all times.
All I said was that FFG and Dust Studio have a yearly meeting where the releases are agreed upon. Pointing the finger at Dust Studio for not releasing enough from army X is wrong as it is both parties who have a say.
One of many reasons for not releasing stats in advance:
Releasing stats for models well in advance of the model release is possible (Loth) but doing so makes the book useless at the time of release and when the models are released the book will be hard to come by.

Rezzing this fether from the fourth(!) page with some upcoming releases: http://new.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3864
Emil and Ivar had just begun reloading the mortar mounted on the back of their vehicle when they heard the explosion from the front lines. A tank was obliterated, but there was movement in the rubble. An Axis zombie, eyes alive with malevolent purpose, clawed its way out of the debris, snarled something in German, and rushed the SSU platform with a mine clutched to its chest. Another deafening boom sounded, and the Ubertoten was knocked to the ground, its mine detonating in a blinding flash as an Allied bomber veered away from SSU gunfire. Ivar and Emil sat in stunned silence for a moment, then quickly snapped into action when the radio crackled to life with new target coordinates.
Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announced three new units for Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare! The three factions are each bringing something new to the battlefield. Zverograd is still a hotly contested military target, and each army is looking to find an advantage. The Allies want to secure their supremacy in the air, the Axis is fielding more Ubertoten, and the innovative SSU continue to find new ways to leverage their limited resources.
The Allies Rule the Skies
The Allies have the largest air fleet of all the factions, though they have recently been given a tough time by the Axis’ jets. The Allies have been hard at work developing a means to meet this new threat: the P-48. The P-48 Pelican is capable of taking off with a very short runway, making this light and versatile fighter very quick to deploy on any new battlefield. The Pelican is equipped with Triple Dual .50 cal machine guns that give it a serious edge against enemies in the air and quickly eats through infantry.
The P-48C Pelican configuration known as Diving Dotty
The Pelican was first put to work as a dive bomber in its P-48C configuration, affectionately known to the Allies as “Diving Dotty.” The P-48C is capable of providing great ground support against infantry while fending off enemy fliers with its heavy machine guns alone. Diving Dotty really shines when it leverages its powerful 500 kg bombs, which can wipe out tanks and troops alike in a fiery explosion. Daredevil pilots dive as low as possible for extra accuracy in using these devastating explosives.
Bellowing Bertie, the P-48X Pelican configuration
In contrast to the P-48C, the P-48X, or “Bellowing Bertie,” prefers to deal death from a distance. Bellowing Bertie makes use of the same heavy machine guns as its predecessor, but is equipped with powerful Ground Rockets that let it strike from a longer range than Diving Dotty. These devastating rockets are a reliable and powerful way to clear a path for any Allied ground forces needing to cut through enemy tanks and troops.
Either of these Pelican configurations are sure to add a great deal of firepower to your airborne Allied forces.
Seeking a Second Death
The Axis has recently deployed their powerful undead Ubertoten on the field of battle. These sentient undead soldiers were created by injecting the Wiederbelebungsserum into live subjects rather than corpses. While this process grants the soldiers greater physical gifts, some soldiers have found the burden of their abominable un-life too great to bear. These souls looking for death’s release volunteer for the Ubertoten Suicide Squad.
The explosive Ubertoten Suicide Squad
The Ubertoten Suicide Squad is armed to the teeth with Magnetic Mines designed to do damage to tanks at close range. They also wield Panzerfaust 100s which they use to soften their targets before charging in to detonate their mines. These troops have less than no regard for their safety, as they try to blow up themselves with their targets. The Ubertoten Suicide Squad are a terrifying and effective presence on the field of battle, and will work as an excellent anti-tank measure in your Axis army.
Cheap and Effective are a Great Combo
The SSU is always working to find ways to support their tremendously effective infantry with more firepower. The BR 47 Self-Propelled Weapon Platform has proven an inexpensive and potent method for bringing some anti-tank weapons to the battlefield. This light vehicle evolved from little more than a farm machine into a staple of the SSU forces.
The Red Fury version of the Self-Propelled Weapon Platform
The BR 47-100 Self-Propelled Weapon Platform configuration, known as the "Red Fury," is wielding a massive 100 mm M1946. This gun is capable of dealing damage to even the heaviest tanks and hardiest infantry. A few BR 47-100s can hold the line against much more powerful targets, dealing effective damage while the enemy attempts to close the distance.
The Red Rain configuration of the Self-Propelled Weapon Platform
If your SSU forces have another method of holding the line and a team of Observers in the field, then the BR 47-200 Self-Propelled Weapon Platform brings a cheap and effective artillery weapon to the field. Known as the "Red Rain," this vehicle carries a 200 mm Heavy Mortar. The cost-effective Red Rain can sit comfortably behind enemy lines and strike a spotter’s targets with deadly effect without ever getting in the line of fire.
Pre-Painted Premium Miniatures for all Three Factions
Each faction is bringing a variety of new forces to the field, and FFG also offers Dust Premium Edition pre-painted models for each of these units’ configurations. Get Diving Dotty in that beautiful shade of blue, see the Red Rain in vivid detail, or bring painstaking painted suicidal Ubertoten to the field. Each of our Dust Premium Edition figures is painted according to the detailed art schemes developed by Vincent Fontaine, the art director of Dust Studio.
Each of these units brings something interesting to the struggle for dominance in Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare, so plan to pick up your favorite faction’s reinforcements in the near future!

It looks like a Chibi-version of a P38 Lightning. I know it's due to the limitation of size and price for a tabletop board/wargame, but it's truly awful.
I like the zombies, though they look a bit too sentient for my taste. Loving the tractor variants.
3862
Post by: Duncan_Idaho
Still, the engine makes sense. Germans where the only ones at that time that were able to build the sleek jet-engines. Angloamerican engines were way more bulkier before they were able to observe german engines.
7375
Post by: BrookM
The Gloster Meteor would love to see you about that.
3862
Post by: Duncan_Idaho
Well... it had sleek engines but still a lot of trouble with them.... should have written quite reliable sleek engines. Some of the problems of the Gloster stemmed from its straight wings, but quite some also from its engine. And it was a radial compressor that still had a huge facing that cost a lot of fuel and speed. The engines used for german planes had axial compressors and were more efficient and smaller in direct comparisson. Only the later Glosters got engines nearly the same size.

My brother won't even touch the zombies and gorillas with a ten foot pole.
I like the Dust Warfare base game, but this policy of putting out the new units in dribs and drabs is killing it for me. What's the point in spending twenty+ dollars on a book that has only has rules for one or two units?
How much you want to bet Axis and Ally players will be expected to buy Operation Zverograd to get the rules to use the flyers in Operation Icarus?
7722
Post by: em_en_oh_pee
...or print the free fanmade cards for your units. Done.
And by releasing like this, they can at least playtest to ensure no major bs comes out that invalidates one army or creates flavor-of-the-month armies, etc.
Also, they are at the mercy of Dust Studios, so its not their fault. They do what they can to make the best of the releases. And Hades is a good example of a book you don't need, but has awesome content beyond unit listings - such as a badass campaign! Its fantastic!

You do realise that these are plastic kits and that only one other company can put out plastic kits at a higher rate?
7375
Post by: BrookM
These aren't multi-part assembly kits however.
3862
Post by: Duncan_Idaho
Actually quite some of them are such kits. They are put together at the factory or do you think they are carved out of a block of rubber?
The walkers and vehicles are sprue-kits like the stuff GW puts out.
And the minis can be compared to the FW/Finecast line of GW, though quality-wise Finecast is lacking in comparison.
7375
Post by: BrookM
Judging from the quality of some of the infantry models, wouldn't surprise me if they were carved from tires. And yes, I am aware of the until recently single-pose walkers being kits.
3862
Post by: Duncan_Idaho
Actually the walkers have quite some working articulation points and when you cut them loose from their base you can even reposition most of them easily.
Also, only a few infantry needs just some heating up with the hair dryer to bend the thin parts into shape.
38067
Post by: spaceelf
It is no secret that these do not have the detail of metal models. However, I think that it is a great product. More importantly they are positioned in a unique place in the market, between prepainted stuff like Clix and high quality kits like Infinity. The question is will the game appeal to both experienced gamers and new blood?

While I'm totally happy with my AT-43 and DUST models, I would say that the solution above is becoming more and more irritating as time wears on. I really wish they would just move to the same sort of plastic as GW, Dreamforge, etc.
No disrespect to the folks who like it, it just grates on me after awhile.
3862
Post by: Duncan_Idaho
Well, this would mean a steep increase in prices anda lower rate of infantry. Sorry, but business-side ahs to beconsidered or we end up with another dead game.
Also, there are not that many minis that need this treatment.
And be happy that they never switched to Finecast like GW did, then you really could cry Havoc.

Same here at about 150 dust infantry, It gets to be a pain after a while. I haven't had one box of infantry yet that didn't need at least one figure to be straightened.
Duncan_Idaho wrote:Well, this would mean a steep increase in prices anda lower rate of infantry. Sorry, but business-side ahs to beconsidered or we end up with another dead game.
Sorry Duncan, you usually sound like you know what you're talking about, but you're going to have to expound on that before I'm going to believe it. There are plenty of companies cranking out dirt cheap hard plastic infantry and dust puts out hard plastic vehicles, so why would switching to a harder material make the cost of infantry go up?
3862
Post by: Duncan_Idaho
Cause it is different forms being used? Cause its way less different parts for vehicles than for infantry? And some of the dirt cheap companies are already in trouble or already have problems delivering in time. And those that do better don´t get as many different infantry kits out the door as FFG or GW do.
If you are referring to Warlord, that just started and they are quite abig company now in comparison to many others. Guess why Battlefront does not have that many different plastic kits (besides from being a little bit late to the show).
Can you please give me some examples?
The infantry that goes with Dust right now is btw, much quicker to get into production than plastics would.

The infantry that goes with Dust right now is btw, much quicker to get into production than plastics would.
And none of that explains why soft plastic figures are cheaper and faster to produce than hard plastic figures. I'm honestly asking you to elaborate to someone not an expert on injection molding why can't produce hard plastic figures and retain the same profit level they have now. Is it the type of plastic, the type of mold, labor?

It´s a different molding process that uses different molds and different casting machines.
The difference between both processes can mean that you have to pay several thousand to tenthousand dollars more just to get the same pieces in hard plastic.

This is the sort of thing I was talking about in the other thread, Duncan.
Also, my plastic AT-43 and Confrontation figures are pretty soft. I think they went under for other reasons...
The main defence of soft plastic over hard that I can think of is that it results in fewer breakages of the figures (weapons, etc) when packed/in transit, as the figures are pre-assembled - which results in fewer returns, etc.

It depends very much on run numbers of course. Also worth noting that a lot (most?) of Dust figures are essentially "cut and pasted" from a selection of parts, Most Allied troops use the same 5 heads/torsos/legs. Likewise with the Axis and SSU (some head variation in some cases) so a run of Recon Boys and Special Ops Rangers use most of the same parts, as opposed to being a completely distinctive run of models.

Some standard parts are of course interchangeable as those units use standard army issue stuff. But there are always pieces in every unit that are not in the others, so you still need quite a number of different pieces.
Softer plastic also allows for smaller runs than hard plastic does. So even heros can be done in plastic and don´t need to be cast in metal. That was a problem GW had for quite a time.

Anyway, Operation Icarus can now be found on-line: http://new.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3872
The rules for the upcoming Dust Tactics expansion Operation “Icarus” are now available on our Dust Tactics support page! The siege of Zverograd continues, and the three factions are all trying to secure this vital military target. The Allies currently possess the most powerful air force on the planet, but the Axis is in control of the airfield in Soviet Zverograd. The helicopters of the SSU and the new Axis jets are beginning to close the gap in control of the skies. In order for the Allies to secure their dominance in the air, they must launch a major offensive to take control of the airfield.
Prepare for an Aerial Assault
The Allies will have to take care as they plan their approach. New rules are introduced for taking some limited cover in the few trees that line the strip, deadly and explosive minefields create an added obstacle to tactics on the ground, and the Axis’ infantry can take shelter from the Allied barrage in quonset huts. These hazards and havens will be vital to the Allied assault and will be just as crucial for any Axis or SSU defense plan.
A large array of new skills are introduced in Operation “Icarus,” offering a whole host of news ways to gain a tactical edge. A good general knows the strengths of the units he commands, so to make the best use of all these new abilities, begin planning now.
More Realism in Your Dogfights
If you hunger for a more realistic representation of airborne combat, new Optional Advanced Flying Rules (pdf, 1.5 MB) are also now available on our Dust Tactics support page. These rules were designed to give the aerial battles of Dust Tactics a greater sense of realism to the use of planes in combat.
Head to our Dust Tactics support page to download the rules (pdf, 4.2 MB) for Operation “Icarus.” and plan for the Allies’ push into Zverograd and take a look at a different way to leverage your power in the air!

So the tradition of including models only available in campaign boxes continues.
Wonder if those models will ever be boxed separately?

Panzerprins has been available forever now as a resin model on Dust-models. Lovely model, comes with another head, shipping is a bit steep, but well worth it for such a fine quality resin cast.
Might have to get the set though for the huts. Haven't played Dust in ages thanks to FFG and their crawl of releases, but them huts are a must have for me!

They are very nice, but too expensive for my tastes.

Are there any other factions planned. This game is quite tempting, but I bit more choice would be alright. I see one Japanese vehicle on the Dust website, so perhaps that might be an option. What about the actual aliens? Any chance of them coming back for their ship?

Japanese, British, Chinese, and French are already planned as subfactions within their relevant factions. Also the Vrill are planned as the fourth major faction.

Just out of curiosity Duncan, what exactly is your involvement with FFG?
You seem to be always "in the know".

Working in the gaming business as a freelancer, and being well-informed about what is going one helps me earning my money .
On the other hand, the above info is not new, it has been mentioned on the FFG/Dust Studio websites several times.

It's not the tech, it's the proportions. The walkers have "realistic" proportions. The fliers all have these kind of stubby Fisher Price proportions.
Our brains can handwave legs instead of wheels. They can't handwave too fat to fly.

Oh, I was talking about Duncan's defence of the giant engines on the Chibi-P-38 in this exchange:
Duncan_Idaho wrote:Still, the engine makes sense. Germans where the only ones at that time that were able to build the sleek jet-engines. Angloamerican engines were way more bulkier before they were able to observe german engines.
BrookM wrote:The Gloster Meteor would love to see you about that.
I'm not fond of any of their planes, quite frankly.
