Must admit not a fan of the 5 o'clock shadow marines, i have marines down as shave 3 times a day kinda guys. Most probably Ancient greek style; with pig fat and a sharp knife.
Oh and as i said in the 'Show yourself' thread Regarding your Portrait:

Thanks Perkustin, I wouldn't say pro painted but at least they're neat! and i love how they look on my table!

what! how can you not love 5o'clock marines! I made them deliberatley look a bit rougher and unshaven due to the fluff for the Flesh Eaters chapter, they're kinda like the flesh tearers but more unstable so I figured they'd be more interested tearing foes limb from bloody limb!
Oh and as i said in the 'Show yourself' thread Regarding your Portrait:
'Are you Linkin Park?'
lol No not Linkin park dude, but I am a fan, think i'm more of a mini truckin guy without a mini truck

Thanks again GD1, I'm getting into the groove of churning them out pretty quickly now! especially as the basing is just blended cork but it looks good with the colour of them and is cheap and easy! (like me!)

Post by: nerdfest09
Hello my friends, it is I again update time, again not a massive one but just a teaser to see where i'm at, I changed the order of where i wanted the bare heads in which bodies to get a dynamic looking squad, the other thing I did was something i have NEVER done before! I painted a white marine I had to work out a method for painting it that matched the rest of the army as this guy's my apothecary/sang priest, i am very happy with how he turned out so far, he's still very much a work in progress but the armour is done.
First up is honor guard squad member 'Mr choppy'
Here's the banner bearer, minus banner at the moment i may get it painted professionally.
Here's screaming guy with the head i was originally using for the apothecary.
Here's the W.I.P of the Apothecary with a new head that i feel looks better on him, I love the look of the armour but wouldn't want to paint a whole lot of it
And now the whole honor squad together! these boys gonna cause a whole lot 'o' pain!
And this is the start of a project i'm doing for a good friend of mine who is one of the best painters i've ever seen, but sadly due to his workload has asked me to paint 20 Salamanders tac marines for him which i happily (although nervously) accepted
Well, that's it! I'll finish the apothecary tomorrow and i want to work on the honor guard and also I will highlight the armour on at least 5 sallies, so look out for an update tomorrow or sat!
Brush on brothers, brush on!

Sweet update, Damo. Squad is looking good, especially the apothecary. Love that white PA. Sallies are looking good, too. Can I ask why you're hesitant to paint the banner yourself? You do stunning work everywhere else, why do you doubt your skills when it comes to the banner?

Post by: nerdfest09
Thanks guys, I'm just about to sit down and paint today so i thought i'd see if anyone saw the latest :-) Umm Moltar, I have tried a while ago but i can't get it right imo and it's the sort of item if i muck it up it will most probably bring the whole look of my army down and I don't want to lose interest in them because of 1 item, I might still do it but i can't work out a design either....
In fact how about I put it out there on Dakka? can any artistically minded Dakkites design me a banner? I am open to pretty much anything but i am thinking a skeleton of some description and I'd like a scroll to say 'We are you're last breath' and to make it more fun I'll put up a model I painted as a prize :-) I'm thinking Sallie dread or Ork Warboss pictured previously! get your art heads on Wurzel Gummidge!
Nerdfest09 Automatically Appended Next Post: I'm guessing everyone's trying to work out a banner design for me to try then eh! meanwhile, I got highlighting on the Sallies, managed to get 10 done so far, the highlights look a little stark at the moment but i'm trying to get them to at least blend in with the rest of the army they're going to, once the cheagles and eyes have been done I think they'll look really nice, anyway here's a quick update for yo all.
catch you soon.

As for the BA minis I have to say the way you paint faces is amongst the best I have ever seen. Up there with those snooty fwench golden deamon painters and their face paint techniques.

I got a quiet evening for a little while at work and managed to work on getting the chest eagles and skulls on the first Tac salamander squad done, i was trying to make them fit in with his army without trying to do nmm or anything too crazy and he was after a darker slightly gothic feel, I think i've done alright but I'll wait and see what Pyriel thinks
When i put them all together I'm very pleased with the look of them, and I'm now even keener to get more done on them, just the seals, lenses and bolters as I believe Pyriel will be doing his own shoulder pads on them? then i might assemble the 2 attack bikes i'm doing for him as well and then do them and the other squad at the same time!
anyway here are some quick shots.

Sure Gits, it's really easy dude, snakebite leather base coat, then wash with devlan mud, highlight with snakebite then add a small amount of bleached bone, just highlight not as much, add more bleached bone, shorten the highlight again, then on the very edges just pure bleached bone, and Voila! ;-) 45 minutes to do them (although not all were wings some were just the little skull)

Now that´s what I meant by "gothic" looking marines. All colours are toned down to a darker more menacing hue. Hate that GW crap with those bright alarm colours, anyone seen the GW studio salamanders they make me wanna puke.
Good job on the chest eagles, I must say I never used snakebite and bleech bone myself, I always add in golden yellow into the mix but they look very good so I will try out your colour recipe myself.
If you are uncomfortable painting honour marks on various pieces of the armours then leave that to me, those will be used as my primary tacs with the new drake themed shoulderpads I sculpted that are soon to be released and I´ll paint up those lava crystal bases for these dudes.

Thanks guys! the sallies aren't for me though GD1 i'm painting them up for Pyriel while he busily sculpts more goodies for us! My BA successors are going nicely, I've hit on a method and scheme i really like and I even have a teeny tiny bit of fluff about them from waaaay back in the RT days, and even 2 pictures! egad!
And Pyriel, I'm really glad you like them so far, i thought I did alright on keeping them gothic feeling and trying to keep the chests similar to yours, I should have the whole lot done in a week or two for you, I'm doing the lenses on the first 10 this friday and starting on the highlighting on the others, once i'm done I may attempt some honor marks on a couple of them and see how i go :-) they've been fun to paint too, and once they're done it's just the 2 attack bikes for you, thank you for trusting in me and having enough confidence that i can do something you like! lets hope they reach your expectations!
Also worked more on the honor guard for my own Flesh Eaters army, i blocked the right shoulder pad in brown ready for some gold paint to distinguish them from normal marines and laid down the first blood red highlights on them as well as finishing 'Mr Choppy' he's waiting to be bases and have his purity seals painted then it's on the shelf of angry red marines balancing on the edge of sanity while they protect a fragile Imperium... Phew!

Happy Friday my friends! I wanted to make some progress on the Salamanders i'm doing for my friend Tom! and i did indeed, I got the second Tac squad highlighted and the chest eagles done as well, they all look pretty nice, now i need to paint just the bolters and lenses and purity seals and finish the backpacks and I can send them on the way to him!
I also made a very small start on my bare head tute, I just prepped the heads and drilled them so i can paint them easier, then i primed black and gave them a coat of Tallarn flesh foundation paint, and i gave them one wash with Ogryn flesh wash, but you can see them below as well
I like the middle head on second pic the best so far, it's going to be a remake of one of my favorite one's I did on my Raven guard land speeder it's a space wolf head from the blood claws with the massive mohawk and braid shaved off him.
hope you like so far.

Thanks guys, :-) I personally think the lenses are the defining feature of them too! but i'm quite happy with them overall and I'm proud of painting the 2 squads in pretty good time. I have a few things on the burner modeling wise and my brain is churning through how to tackle them all! I'm just about to buy a Realm of Battle game board and paint it to match my bases as well as build and paint and weather an imperial sector box, then there was the bits box raid I did and managed to strip and re assemble enough parts to make a 5 man tac termie squad (apart from 2 power fists and 2 storm bolter arms) and a plasma cannon armed dev squad, so i've definitely got enough to keep me amused in the coming weeks :-) this week was slow as I had to pull everything out of my shed and re assemble it to make room for my board and subsequent painting, but i should be back to painting my Flesh eaters this Friday!
thanks for checking in! see you soon as i can!

Righto, update time, I had fun today painting my honor guard, got them about 95% finished and also experimented with some methods of texturing my board, I found some builders sand in the shed and pva glue so i did a little bit to see how they looked, i'd like to know your opinions on which 'look' is better?
firstly I put the glue down and then sprinkled the sand over the top and pressed it down to adhere, it ended up looking like this:
the next bit I added glue on the board and then rubbed the sand into it and smeared it around to get an effect, this way uses much more sand as it clumps when you rub it but i have heaps so it won't matter:
here they are side by side:
Now i added some blended cork board as some rougher texture to see how it looked, first the sprinkled and pressed one:
and the blended and rubbed one:
Next up is the Flesh Eaters honor guard I nearly finished them all now! I really like how they turned out together, tomorrow I'll do the bare heads and try and do up a tute for those that would like to know how i do it!
here's the squad, I can imagine them bursting forth from a Razorback transport, eyes wide with wild savagery as they disembowel their enemies before suckling on their flesh!
Thanks for looking, i'm keen to see what you think

Try adding the sand to the paint, then rolling it on with a wall-roller. It'll spread nicely and look like concrete. You'll likeley ruin the roller, but they are cheap enough to be disposable.

Salaies look fantastic NF09 and the Flesh Tearers are coming along nicely too. Looks like you're a pro at the lens painting - it's usually one of the hardest parts to paint on a SM imo. Keep churning out the great stuff!
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Thank you everyone for your replies! which shoulder guard detracts? the chapter badge or the gold one? I did one gold to differentiate them as Honor guard marines otherwise all my marines will look the same and i don't want to bore anyone! :-) and on the plus it'll be easier to see who's who quickly, originally I tried painting on a laurel but stuffed it up and painted over it using gold as I believe the blood angels honor guard have golden helms?
And I think i'll go with the rubbed sand texture, it looks more natural and i have lots of supplies for it :-) but i need to find a better primer, the one i grabbed 2 cans of is gloss!
18980
Post by: Arakasi
The right gold(?) coloured shoulder pads - just can't live up to the awesomeness of the red...
I should add - it's not that they shouldn't be gold, it's just your red is done so well it is "outshining" them so to speak
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Ah thanks for the clarification Arakasi :-) I know what you all mean though, the gold is a bit plain compared with the reds, perhaps I should blend the highlights up to mithril on the top? at the moment it's snakebite/gold then gold washed with devlan and re highlighted with gold. or should I just leave them as is? I've also just started on a Dev squad that I had for my sallies and stripped down to re paint :-)

I am so happy with what I've been mucking around with this week! I painted up 9 bare heads and started on a backdrop for my mini's to just experiment and see how the terrain stuff i got works and looks
so, firstly, what do you usually do when you get a remote control car? throw away the packaging right! not if you're a Nerd you don't a guy from security bought one and had it at work in the box and was going to throw the packaging out but i rescued it seeing potential straight away!
here's the plastic insert the car came on in the box:
I then grabbed some scissors and cut the two long edges off to make a shallow rocky mountain ridge like this:
I then cut some plywood to form a low backdrop which can be painted to resemble a horizon and anything i want to convey the skies of Evandalus Prime and then I used some pre mixed polyfilla or spackle to glue them on, it's still drying so i'm not sure how it'll actually hold them onto the board? I'm going to use more filler to create explosion craters where the models wheels used to sit:
And I tried my hand at making some cheap broken concrete, worked o.k I thin too, it's just plaster mixed with some black paint so when it breaks you don't get the white telltale showing!
Now, onto the head painting! I really tried hard to get work in progress shots but I couldn't get really good pictures so i'll just write as much or as clearly as i can to go with the couple of shots i did manage
firstly I undercoated them black and painted a slightly thinned coat of Tallarn Flesh on them all:
then i washed them quite heavily with Ogryn Flesh wash, this toned the skin and shaded the recesses so I can see where to highlight them next:
Next step was to create the first highlight we work with, it's roughly equally mix of shadow grey, dwarf flesh, bleached bone.
then I did the first highlight, don't worry if it appears quite rough, subsiquent highlights will fix it nicely and in the end we should have quite nice tabletop ready heads!
Next add some more bleached bone to the mix and water it a touch more so it blends better.
Next I added some more bleached bone, it's a really subtle method and as these pics show you shouldn't be able to see a really sharp change in colour, Once i'd done with the highlighting i added some black to the flesh mix and painted his shaved head and a little stubble.
I also added a small amount of Mechrite red to the same flesh mix and watered it down and painted the bottom lips on them all and the bared teeth on those that had them on show:
then lastly I just painted another wash of Ogryn Flesh over the skin on the face and did the neck seals metal and any bionics.
finally, here is how they all look when finished, i'd love to see which ones you all like and what you think of them? I have a good collection of different ones now!
Now, what troops should each one go on? who'd look best in Termie armour/assault marine/ tac troops?
hope you liked todays update i enjoyed it immensely
until next week, and i'm working on something I haven't done before....

Well, not trying to blow my own trumpet, but thanks to Styrofoam04 I went back and checked all my pages from the start to check the images and thankfully they all worked for me, I hope next time Styro you have a look and they work for you! :-) I seem to have actually improved quite significantly in the past year or so! my painting I feel is a lot cleaner and my blending is smoother imo, i'm very pleased with the direction i'm taking now and I hope I get more hints off everyone to help me improve further! if anyone has trouble seeing any pics i'm in photobucket under the same title and you can browse the pics in there, mind you there's a couple of other random shots in there as well lol

I figured out why i cant see some of these images, there a problem with your code you have [/img] in the front instead of [img] you have to remove the "/" from the first one. The "/" signifies closing of the code I dont mean to be picky but I found it hard to get through it because of the lost images, but I copied the link and pasted it in the address bar so I can see what you were talking about. I enjoy your work and I really want to plow through your blog to see your progression, but your OP might deter new readers. you probably read it but Gitsplitta wrote and excellent post on his Blog about bloging and fixing his OP. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/8130/289929.page#4026806 I just started page two and I love your lenses for the eyes, I really like how you explain your painting process as well. I was going to ask how you did that battle damage on the dread. but you answer that on page 2 with your Land Raider. Great work so far. Its a shame I'm supposed to be working.

Yeah, I explained to Damo how to post them up shortly after that post. It's just extra code (iirc, which I might not), not missing/broken pics.

Ahhh, now it makes sense, yes thanks to WM360 I was taught how to put the pics in properly as I wasn't very computer literate back then :-) don't fret, you haven't missed anything all the pics are there I just haven't thought to clean up the attempts that failed in the beginning of the thread, so feel safe in the knowledge that it's all as it should be thanks to Whalemusic! :-)

Deep in the Nerd lair on a stormy day in Australia, the steady sound of rain drowns out the mutterings and continuous 'tink' of brush on water glass as Nerdfest tends to his ever growing band of battle hardened brothers of the FleshEaters!
today I began working on my standard bearer and also managed to finish a running Tac marine and my devastator sarge! not a bad days work, first up the marine and the Dev sarge:
Now, something new! I needed to do a banner bearer for my command squad, now i don't think i'm a bad painter and always have been artistically inclined but the thought of free handing a banner was a bit beyond what i thought I could do, so a researching i did go! I saw someone use printed banners and I watched amazed as others totally freehanded designs onto the banner, then i saw someone mix the two methods to produce an excellent result that was still individual and involved using painting skills, so I put the word out there on Dakka land to help me design a banner for my army command squad, and someone came to my rescue! yes I need to put a big massive shout out of THANKS to Tib (or Tim as his family probably call him!) who offered to re size a pic I found on the web, well, not only did this re sized pic turn up in my inbox but he had also whipped up some other designs that i could choose from to use! one of which i liked more than the one i found and decided to go with it! so if you need something special done or designed then take the jump and ask him i'm sure he'll work something out with you, you won't be disapointed, anyway, I digress, once i had found my chosen picture I then asked my father to print it out in colour, i then cut it to fit my plastic banner and stuck it on using a liberal coat back and front of slightly watered PVA glue, once it dried I used the pic as a template to paint it on and to match the colours
here are the designs I got from Tib:
and the one i chose all glued down:
and here it is after some w.i.p paint, it's still not finished but i like the fact it looks good and painted
test fit with the bearer! what do you think?
And here's a sketch I did today, I want to do a pic for another friend of mine and wanted to do a rough idea of how it will work:
Well, that's it, I'll finish the banner tomorrow and get working on the 4 Plasma cannon Dev squad

Wow, that banner is awesome. This hybrid method might work for my low-level free hand skill. Do you print it on normal papers?

WOW! Your sketching is outstanding! Is that just ink over graphite?

That banner looks awesome man, is it just printed onto paper and then glued straight onto the banner? I may have to try that, as I have two banner men and no idea of what to paint... Very cool. And that sketch is amazing, very cool also, lucky friend!
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
My thanks everyone, firstly the banner, yes it's only printed on normal printer paper and then cut and glued on, then I just painted over it the same i would any mini using it as a guide
My sketch was just a quick pencil outline then shaded roughly with black drawing ink and when dry i just outlined and strengthened parts if it with a black .05 fine marker, it's a plan I want to draw again properly for jirc to have with his space wolves
Now, I finished my Standard bearer today
That's it for today, I spent most of the morning shooting at storm trooper targets with my air rifle

Ha the banner turned out great! Entirely not what I expected. (actually I'm surprised how well that banner fits on there, since I made it to the dimensions of a back banner rather than a company standard)
Are you planning on doing something with the two empty 'flaps' on the banner?
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Cheers everyone! by all means try this technique, it's easy and gives imo good results that still match your army and painting level, I am stoked with how it turned out!
I forwarded them to my dad, Tib and he re sized them to fit the bigger banner :-) but i love the design I used, you outdid yourself! not sure if i will add anything to the flaps yet in case i make a mistake lol

LOL yes i do move from project to project rather quickly Styro! I tend to get inspired by other things and jump in head first into a new army!
I loved the DE but they just didn't feel right for me I so badly wanted to play with them as i really loved the sound of their rules and speed! but if you don't connect with an army it loses it's fun!
Salamanders were beautiful imo, I was so happy with them and they looked so crisp and clean and with the lava additions it was different and drew your eye to the colours nicely, only problem was they each took so long to paint each one! I spent ages on blending each marine and speeder and when I realised it would have taken me another year or two to finish at the rate I was painting I put them on the display shelf until i gave them to a good friend of mine!
Now, my Marines Exemplar, they were obviously my starter army, the one that kick started me back into the hobby and i still think their colour scheme is my favorite, i wish I had the knowledge I have now when i was painting them and i probably wouldn't have sold them but they will 'sort of' make a return, my current Flesh Eaters army is a successor to the Blood Angels and as such need a Death company, so I think if the idea gets a positive review paint my Death Company up in my old Exemplar scheme? what do you think? still DC enough?
Righto i'm off to paint my Dev squad and update the ol blog later today!
catch you all soon!

Ah! the good 'ol fascist tapestries! can't go wrong!
I think the amount of red on the dread and marines is ok for dc, but the amount on something like the land raider is to much IMO.
I take it you're talking about me using the same scheme of my Exemplars as stand in DC? I've sold the old army so I'll be doing them anew for what i need, I think with the red arms and black body with black crosses on the pauldrons it'll suit the DC and also be a trip down memory lane with them i'll be only using a raider for my termies and the DC will have jump packs.
I've nearly finished my dev squad too just need to finish the lenses and seals and joins in the armour and they're done!
and i'm also helping my mate with his storm raven, he wants a heavily weathered white medic carrier for his army and I'm weathering it and starting the main painting so he can give it his own personalization

Update time! and boy i've had a good start this week, a bit of a bits raid and some diligent planning saw me get some mini's painted
well, firstly I had a knock on the door friday and opened it to see a short lady struggling with this!;
What on earth could it be?..... oh looky here its.....
A bag, with a battleboard in it! finally after all these years of wanting one!
And what do you do when you get a battleboard? Oh, you know, you go and re read Terraformers blogs and get some serious inspiration and tips! I've also had a great browse through Dsteingass's blog and also madmarty! I tell you those boys can build! Now In a small tribute to Terraformer and his patience with my questions I needed to start the build with this to honor him I mean they do need a wash don't they!!:......
After a good wash and dry (me and the board) I went on a trip to the shed and brought out the dry builders sand and a bottle of pva glue, after I squirted some glue over the board and sprinkling the sand over it i added more glue and proceeded to use my hands to rub the sand over it trying to get a realistic texture that would work with the boards in any configuration:
Now, when attempting your first terrain piece you tend to learn by your mistakes you wanna know what I learnt when doing this? I learnt that when the sand dries on the surface and you need to brush off the higher bits to enable your marines to stand it dries like rough sandpaper! and it's not a good idea to use your hands to do this o.k! whoops!
wear gloves dudes!
Kitbash time! I have decided to re create a character I kinda miss from my last army! yes that's right my friends it's the re birth of Librarian Tomas! and this time he is geared up with some new armour to tackle the foes of the emperor!
I also managed to start painting him too, just a couple hours but he's coming along nicely, i also managed to add a small tribute to the goblinburg hive he was recruited on all those years ago....
Still a fair bit of blending left to do but the base colours are down as a guide on his power weapon!
Also scrounged a Terminator chaplain as well he's still in planning mode, need to wait for some bits ordered to finish him off and tidy him up, but this is the basis of him.
And I think lastly i also managed in my busy day to nearly finish these 3 bad boys! just a few touch ups and some seals and crux work and they're done, but this is where i'm at with them.
Cool, sorry I haven't been regular with my updates I've had that thing called life get in the way! but it's all good now and hopefully I can give you more progress soon! let me know what you think as usual

The color doesn't matter, it's colored by manufacturer methinks, blue, pink, as long as it carves, and is not the kind that shreds into little balls, it's all the same stuff. It's also only sold in 8x10' sheets, but in 1/2" up to 2" thick sheets.
Weathering powder is great stuff, but I don't think it is the ultimate answer- sometimes, less weathering gives a greater effect, you know what I mean?

I hear you about less is more! I mean look at the pic of me in the bath! less is definitely more there!
I can scrounge the styrene that's made of balls easily and perhaps coat it with some watered down filler and glue to seal it but the other good stuff (in any colour) is being troublesome to say the least but I'm nothing if not persistent so i shall keep my eyes peeled and continue enquiring around my town (and hey no small town jokes from you Pyriel!)

I've found that mixing sand into paint and rolling it on creates an almost concrete-like texture on ball foam, but it still chips pretty easily if the edges aren't covered with some other kind of skin. I actually do have a rubber ducky collection. That's not weird, right? The story behind them is that every marching band season, the band support staff give you a rubber duck and usually a little candy bar or something every time you fold and hang your marching uniform correctly. Once you get the hang of hanging the uniforms ( lol), and with a performance or two every week, you start to accumulate ducks...and they don't ever seem to go away. Here's five of 'em that I could find...without getting up from my computer. They are literally everywhere. Anyways, enjoy that shower cap

Here's a point, the MOD's haven't taken it down for being non wargaming related.... I wonder if you should take that as a compliment lol.

Lol, thanks Kitch and you would be mistaken as it is in fact wargaming related pic! yes i am seen scrubbing a panel of the Realm of Battle game board that classes as gaming in my books! although lets just boost the ego and say thye mods enjoy some Nerd nudity...... Nerdity?
You want to know how i do my reds eh! no probs at all, it's easy and imo looks good too
paints are:
the army painter dragon red primer
Blood red
blazing orange
vomit brown
devlan mud
Baal red
All i do is prime the model with dragon red then wash with devlan mud, once dry i then start to highlight by layering over blood red, then i jjst do a 1:1 mix of blood red/blazing orange and continue highlighting closer to the edges, then it's pure blazing orange again smaller highlights, after that it's 1:1 blazing orange/vomit brown and lastly pure vomit brown on the extreme edges and high points, once dry I wash the entire model with Baal red and then paint the details as you can see I kept the technique fairly smple and easy to mix the colours again and again as i do my force, I think I did a step by step on my first experiment i did for them ages ago but if you want me to do one for you i can certainly send something through
Cheers!

Update day early this week! As these are my first ever 2 terrain peices i've ever worked on I got inspired in a big way with my battle board and i got out of bed early and went to work on it, after I added the sand and blended cork to texture it, it then received a coat of black undercoat so i could see how it was coming along (nicely imo) I also noticed that the cliff faces were now too smooth and needed some fine details on them, I grabbed the 'ol trusty white glue and added some water and then painted it on where I wanted some texture, then it was simply sprinkling over some plaster powder and once dry another quick coat of black
I let it all dry for a good while and then went to the next step which was using the army painter coloured primer can to lay on the base coat I used 1.5 cans of Leather brown to do the whole board and it turned out really good! I neglected to snap a pic of the brown on the board sorry guys again, after a drying time, i cranked up the 'ol noise polluter and pulled out the airbrush to paint the cliff faces and broken plates of earth, for this i used Vallejo air paints, Dark yellow, middle stone and light grey green mixed with small amount of black,
at this stage I feel it's really coming along nicely and very quickly! for it's appearance now onto the start of detailing, dheneb stone overbrush on the skull pits and wash with gryphonne sepia and then lightly dry brushed on the edges of the cracks in the rocks etc, and that's where my board ends for the day!
Love to see what you all think!
As i had the airbrush out and itching for action I started working on my imperial city, I've got one building assembled and not based yet but I gave it some undercoat and used the same paint I used on the board to tie the colours together across the whole terrain, starting with the middle shade I sprayed the whole structure and then used the lighter stone colour to add some feathered highlights, after that i used the darker shade to add some shadows and gave it a burst from underneath for more shadow.
I plan on basing the buildings to match the board, and adding the details with golds and bronze as well as weathering,
Feedback and thoughts on all this is very welcome, i want to make sure i'm heading in the right direction!
talk soon!.............. Damo

Hey Nerd, you do realize it ain't real terrain unless it draws blood, right? wounds aside, it's awesome to see you working on your RoB finally, and I really appreciate the kind words and especially the homage to our little RoB project. Your texture and color scheme look great, I would just add that from the close pic I saw so far, it could just use a little dark wash into the crevices and at the base of the cliffs and under rubble, followed by some more edge highlights. I saw you mention you were doing that but didn't see a close up yet :p
I anxiously await to see how this project looks in the end, you got some super spiffy figures and it looks like they'll have a fitting table to fight on.

Really coming along nicely. Weirdly enough I've also never seen bronze-ish CoD yet, looks awesome (and goed well with the table). Nice warm tones.
Say, that balcony looks like it could use a few banners hanging down from it .

Righto then, Terraformer wanted me to 'wash my crevasse' so I did, well, i started to do it but due to the board being on my floor at the mo it kinda hurt my elbows after a good hour or so, so I've got a few progress shots for you all, it makes the areas pop a bit more with some shading, i used heavily watered down black drawing ink for it and it gave the cracks a nice soft blend where i wanted it but was still very opaque in the deeper parts, i still need to touch up areas but it's looking better each day
I did also manage to start adding some water effects to my skull pools too, i'm not sure how i'll finish it off but the first 2 layers are done so I can still see the submerged skulls, I want it to look like a stagnant pool as opposed to a toxic sludge.
Started painting my termie chappie too nice looking guy, can hold his own in a fight but loves hanging with my squad armed with claws!
Got some paint on 3 more marines too, 2 tacs and a termie
And lastly, I've nearly finished Librarian Tomas! probably one more session and he'll be finished but here's his 90% shots.
Phew! what a day in the Nerd cave! now I put my psychic shower cap back on and prepare for the feedback!

Thanks for the compliment dude, I can't wait to throw librarian Tomas into the thick of the action! and yep, the chappie helm is from Chapterhouse studio, it's meant for power armour but I really wanted it in that armour so i did a bit of 'persuasion'
Skull-soup terrain?

Yes, Skull soup, I believe it's pea and ham? heh! flour on my board, it's just a foodies dream in my blog at the moment!
I don't know what colour to do the pentagram yet, tbh I didn't even think about it until then, what do you suggest I use?

I would say something contrasting that will be visible like lightning blue or lightning purplish.

I just finished your thread what a roller coaster ride, thats all i can say it all looks great! i really liked how your marines exmplar looked i would have never thought of that going to give it a whirl on my dark eldar. but first they need a bath in simple green. you make this look too easy. Like how the game board is turniong out can't wait to see more of that. and thanks for all the tuts thats loads of help. i am actually looking forward to this friday for an update to see if i can not glean any more knowledge from you. lol.

G'day alabamaheretic good to have you on board the Nerd ship! it can get quite choppy at times! I can get kind of disenchanted with my work and hence jump from force to force with reckless abandon! finally (as you may have noticed) I have settled on my Flesh Eaters space marines, I've worked out a quick way of painting them i love the look of and the only problem to date is taking pics of red is a pita! I am going to paint my death co. in the same scheme as my marines exemplar as i really liked the colours but as my skills progressed I saw re doing them as too much of a drag!
if you want any more info or advice on anything i've done just shoot me a PM i'm only too glad to help if i can and my main goal for starting the blog was to learn things myself from everyone here on Dakka, and if I learnt something or figured it out myself then i wanted others to look and go 'hey! I can do that too!'
My battle board is great! I love it, I am only sad i never bought it years ago! I have 2 weeks off work in about 14 days and i'd planned to paint it then as it's a big job, but I started the basics and 3 days later she's nearly battle ready! i'm also working on a ruined building and base from the imperial sector, so keep your eyes peeled for progress on that too, if i do a good enough job then I think i may try my hand at some more terrain work, there are heaps of excellent Dakkaites who are mega inspirational (i'll link them later) and I've jumped in feet first because of them!
well, i'm looking forward to friday myself, my bff is coming over and i'm helping him work on his storm raven medic gunship he's working on (so far i've done all the work!) it's gonna be a Nerd cave full of Nerdness and we'll drink Gweneth Paltrows until we get it all painted! then i'll update and we'll s where i'm at!
sorry for the endless dribble there everyone..... it's 5:34am down here and work's been slow

Yea been recovering with my painting time from the flood in my house and I have been consumed on commissions and my new Warmachine battlegroup I have been working on when I get a chance. My 40k stuff been on the back burner and it is a good break for the time untill 6th ed comes out and we all know what chapter is in the limelight for that!! (Finally props to the 1st Chapter!! ) That will be motivation for me to paint more 40k.
I will update my thread tonight with what I have been working on. Keep up the amazing work Damo and can't wait to see your board completed.

All right stop
Collaborate and listen
Nerd is back with my brand new invention
Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Then I flow that a model daily and nightly
Will it ever stop?
Yo, I don't know
Turn off the lights and I'll glow!
Update-a-rama! quite a few little bits today, nothing too huge but interesting none the less
lets start off with the battle board, I had a little trouble with it the other day when using my water effects, due to the weather and temperature and quite possibly the thickness I applied, it dried on the surface but some small parts in the deeper bits stayed white-ish, I managed to fix it though with a little ingenious thinking, I applied a wash of thraka green over it and then when it was dry I washed over it with Gryphone sepia, it dried really matte but another coat of water effects brought it back up to shiny and wet!
here's a few shots of the work in progress:
As you can see, the skulls are still visable but the water looks nice and brackish but the surface is matte, I now gave it another coat of water and this is how it looks, it's not dry in the shots as it takes 12 hours to cure properly.
I was settling into a terrain day and was inspired to work on the base of my ruined building, I cut some foamcore board into tiles and attached them to a board with some filler, I sort of pushed and pulled the tiles in different direction to look like an explosion had gone off! then I added some cork and rubble and sand.
I'll have to do a shot later of the base in it's original form as it's on my other camera. but next I wanted a marble effect on the tiles so I found one on the Terragenesis website, it's really great for techniques and ideas, this tute was by a guy called Abaroth and it worked nicely except I think I made the veins too busy and close together so it doesn't look natural, so I'll re prime it and do it again later, but here's the first attempt at it.
MARINE TIME!
here's a couple of shots of my finished marine and also my chaplain I completed:
Here's my Chaplain all done, I named him 'Edwardo' after my dad I'm really pleased with him, I wanted to paint some different styles of bone on him, I tried to make his shoulders a warm bone and the other parts a nice cool bone shade, I can't wait to play with him!
And another legend of the chapter, a stalwart veteran of countless battles, terminator armour worn with pride for the last 60 years! here he is breaching a room and laying down fire!
I raided my bits box again too, and I am re building my Chapter master! I I'm going to use the same pose and weapons, but I have a new head arriving soon and I used a pair of heresy era running legs to make him more ornate.
and another character I am converting in my cut and paste style is my counts as Mephiston I used the chapter master old body and put it on the DA robed legs to give him the 'look'
I'm waiting on some pads and a head for him too, the one that's there isn't what I'm using.
Did a little bit more on my Sang priest/apothecary, just blocked in some red areas as he was looking too white
Remember way back at the top of this post when I said i was in a terrain mood? yeah well, I started putting together an objective marker for my board, i wanted something epic to fight over and i'm thinking the last data slate holo table would be pretty important to tactical genius, a room I can incorporate in my buildings to represent the command centre for planning an invasion, I need to diffuse the light somehow but I'm pleased as punch with this start
and here's a scale shot with a sarge:
I got the screens from Terragenesis and had my dad print them on acetate sheets, I have a heap more different ones i'll be using throughout my terrain!
please let me know what you all think and I'll get back to painting!

Post by: Eggroll
Nice idea on the holo table! I agree it needs to be diffused and more even throughout. Maybe just stick a sheet of parchment/baking paper between the light and transparent sheet?
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Thanks fella's I'm glad you like it so far! I'll try and put something between the light and screen to diffuse it, maybe some baking paper or cellophane?
I'll re do the marble this week and see how I can improve it? I have a feeling that treating the entire slab as one large piece will make it look better but I'm not sure how real it would appear? i'm not an expert in marble floors :-)
I have a heap more bitz arriving this week so i'll assemble and show you what else I've got soon!
so, what's everyone else been up to lately? I only have one more week of work then 2 very welcome weeks off for painting and modeling!

Thanks Giraffex and Dave! you are totally right, TG kicks ass! I'm always referring back to it for ideas and techniques it's a veritable gold mine! I'm now looking forward to trying the marble effect again on that floor. I'll see if i can incorporate the two other methods Giraffe showed me very good effects, I'll probably go somewhere in between the one i tried and the more detailes slab effect, so thanks heaps dude
hey, any ideas on how i can 'finish off' my holo table? I mean to make it blend in with the grimdarkness and look effective? I'm currently toying around with cutting some cardstock into a strip with arches along its length and wrapping it around the table, then adding rivets or stuff to identify it as 40k terrain? what sort of texture should i aim for? metallic? concrete? wood?
c'mon ideas men, thinking hats on!

Now, my pretties how do i make rivets?... I have heard on the evil mastermind website some are very good at it!
39666
Post by: GiraffeX
Ah the holo table, I had a thought about that. What you could do is have two bulbs one on each side one normal and one flashing (blinking) so its gives the effect that one side is on its way out.
If you are using bulbs with plastic um clear bits then you can diffuse them by lightly filing round the bulb, that's what I did to defuse the LED's in my tanks.

Really awesome stuff here! Cant believe i let this one under my radar for so long!
The faces stand out as particularly breathtaking.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Hi Vitruvian, glad you found something you like! :-) lets hope i can keep you entrenched in my sticky web of tomfoolery and madness?
I was never a fan of bare heads on marines, mainly as i couldn't paint them, but i found a good method and i like how it looked so much I decided to have a whole gamut of bare heads throughout my new force! i've just ordered the 6 TW bare heads to use as well and i got a Lord Zuphor bare head i'm using for my re-do of my chapter master counts as Seth :-)
the next problem i have is a sternguard squad, i want to keep them looking mainly the same as my troops but i want a small differentiating factor to make them stand out as such, any ideas?
15358
Post by: Vitruvian XVII
Hmmm dunno. Uber guns? Awesome shoulder pads. Ancient marks of armour. Bionics?
50028
Post by: leohart
I would go for the robed marines in the DA veteran box, but I might be a bit biased. :-)
Another idea is to have Gold Helmet.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Would just the addition of scoped and perhaps a gold knee be too little? that's sort of the direction i was thinking?...
14070
Post by: SagesStone
Some sort of badge, trophy or maybe a stripe on their helmet? I like how the Chaplain seems sort of creepy, in a good way of course. Mainly how the head works with that sort of piercing gaze it has.
50028
Post by: leohart
I think scoped and gold knee is too little especially on the table top. You can also do stripe pattern on should pads. Or scuplt a cloak. Or just paint them all WHITE. That would totally stand out.
Okay, might be that is a bit too much. How about doing split black and red?
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
I'm using black and red for my DC, basically using the Marines Exemplar scheme to represent them :-)
Oooh, how about 2 gold knees? lol
I think i'll need to runs some test models eh!

Post by: dsteingass
Personally, I prefer the sliced styrene rod rivet method, because it is quick, and I have a CHop-it... but everyone has their favorite method.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
I don't have a chop-it i'm afraid if i try and slice the styrene rod with a blade it will compress one side and I'll end up with kinda squashed rivets? are there any other ways i can either make the rivets or chop the styrene rod? or maybe someone sells bag-o-rivets in different sizes? :-)
48594
Post by: dsteingass
If you use a good, sharp blade there should be no compression, you just basically plant the tip of the knife into your mat and chop down. For the few you need this will work, but for mass quantities, a $20 Chop-it is best Of course you can buy Grandt line rivets, but they are expensive.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
This may sound silly, but what is a chop-it? is it actually called a chop-it or am I searching for the chop-it by? I don't want to scour the web looking for chop-it's and getting chop-recipes or chop-suey's

t's just a miter rig for a standard razor blade
You just clamp down a fence at whatever thickness you want and chop and feed as many as you want. Automatically Appended Next Post: A good leather punch cna also make nice rivets out of thin plasticard too- It's just always a bitch to get the rivets unjammed out of the tool for me.

"We are not all artisans like our cousins! some of us still prefer to prove our worth to the emperor by washing our face and slicking our hair with the blood of our enemies!"
Chapter master Lord Naimad of the Flesh Eaters chapter.
I now present to you the new improved Chapter master of the Flesh eaters (counts as Seth with blood reaver) much better paint and face! using Vallejo paints and new GW shades he's a bit darker but looks great imo
I also finished my counts as Mephiston too! I wanted him to still 'look' like meph but have my own Nerdish spin on him, so I used DA robed legs (good start) and the old chapter master torso and re painted him up a bit darker, especially the robes i wanted them to sort of resemble blood red velvet? really dark in the recesses and nice highlights on the folds! I also tried to paint the handle of his sword to sort of look like bone segments, i'd love to know what you all think of these two? i'm pleased with them and can't wait to play a game
Started some more work today on my Landraider and my Rhino's, same method as my marines, shortening highlights until the final one in pure brown followed by a wash, I don't like painting tanks but I'm excited to keep going with these now i like how they are progressing
Here's the raider:
and the rhino's with the base coat and shading done.
Well, enough talking from me! I need to get my brush moist again and get crackin' all comments and advice greatly appreciated

lol Don't worry Tom, I haven't forgotten to eat my shower cap! thank you for allowing me some salt to flavor it, very generous of you! I'm going to try and get a heap done on your bikes soon, I've just been a bit carried away with my other marines the last few days! the Chapterhouse parts on the raider are brilliant, they fit so nicely and are really nice to paint too, clear sculpting and defined lines, I love 'em, update pics of them below too!
What! stuff arrived from Nick! WooHoo! that's great news I can't wait to see what turns up in the 'ol stage coach! you are a LEGEND! I shall inter another iteration of my chapter master in terminator armour with your claws too!
@Mr Merlin: never fear dude, I'll be drilling barrels soon, I haven't forgotten about that point of interest!
Now, onto my update, here's some more landraider work from today, the colours are quite rich with the new shades, a bit dark for my marines but will be fine for vehicles etc...
I also assembled and primed some more troops to unleash righteous death, firstly my next Terminator squad
Next up is my start on my Death Co. CH packs and weapons in front of them.
And this big boy! Honored Brother Adamus!
Did a bit of fiddling around with my Holo Table, I made a frame out of L plastic to cover the edges and keep the screen in place, now I'm figuring out how to seal and texture the deatails on the sides? more on this project later today....
Thanks again for dropping by! I do enjoy a good chat and a cup of Gweneth!

Somehow you manage to make such a simple colour scheme look absolutely fantastic. Everything in your army just pops.
I love that LR. The lenses on the hatch are incredibly well done and those Chapterhouse doors look amazing. Also your weathering is top notch. That death company chaplain is looking really good so far, so is his squad. And that holo table is ingenious. Those joins are a little sloppy as you say, but nothing a little Greenstuff (in both liquid and solid form) can't fix, right? Just next time I think you could incorporate some of the Cities Of Death fences.
Something like this...
Only a few dollars for some of the fence sections if you buy from bits stores.

The pegiun is nice man, really liking your take on the death company. again landraider is still looking flawless.
I do have a question for your terrain piece, is it supposed to be new looking or is it going to have that worn feeling like most 40k stuff has. Personally i think the light is a tad bright but I am not sure on how to fix it. Will digest this some more and see if i come up with any thing.

Cheers guys thanks for the feedback, Flying Pooo, I'll have a hunt around for some of the fence parts, I may re do the top section of the table using them to add more detail? it's only that part i'm struggling with, it's not as smooth as I'd like it to be and in parts looks 'built' but it's a first attempt so learning curve is steep
Yeah, I gotta say i'm happy with the landraider the colour is really nice even if it's a touch darker than the marines, and those Chapterhouse parts are seriously some of the best aftermarket bits I've ever bought they fit well and the details are so clean, and i've bought bits from a bucket load of people over the years and I'm happy to crow about CH any time of the day! i've never had one problem with any parts from them at all! not to mention they make some awesome looking stuff too!
Thanks Alabama! the Holo table will be weathered in the end as if it's been in a building that's exploded and it's still just got the power of the machine god surging through with one last glimmer of information! the light does look bright in the pics and it probably is a bit too bright irl but I've used a few sheets of wax paper etc to diffuse the glow from the l.e.d other than that i'm not sure what else to do with it?
Hi lipsdapips! where have you been hiding dude? you like what i'm playing with then that's geat! i'll have to swing by and check your stuff again too, see if you've been busy!
Feedback from the 4 year old birthday boy too! His mum said Penguin cake for the win! he didn't want to cut it up lol

Your painting is just extraordinary nerdfest... never ceases to amaze. Love that LR and the work on the white wings with the shading is really impressive.

Thank you Gits, much appreciated! I think i'm so happy with the raider because i loathe painting large flat panels like tanks! and this one looks pretty acceptable to me for once! the bone parts are done easily too, I used leather brown as a base (from army painter line) wash with devlan then highlight up using bleached bone and leather brown and finally a little bit of white, it matches the method i use for my troops nicely.
I'm looking forward to finishing my DC and working on the dreadnought too, that'll be this weeks work I hope :-)

Thank you all so much! I was going to reply individually but there was a tad too many but really thank you very much for your positive and kind words! it's a great feeling when something you believe you did a good job on gets that sort of response from others in the same hobby! it really spurs me on to push myself and try to really do something others enjoy looking at as much as i do!
with the raider, I painted parts of it like the turret/assault cannon/sponsons in the same method as my marines using the same paints so they's be brighter and blend in with the army while the main hull was done in a different method, using different paint and turned out slightly darker, I tried to make the weapons have that kind of heat stained look inspired by the raider done by redscorps ages ago.
@Finnan, thanks mate from you that's quite a compliment! your work is beautiful and really shows what can be achieved with patience and skill, and you do show us such great step by step through your models so we can attempt it ourselves!
@Gits, Ah, Nerdification! I like it lol, maybe i can trademark the name! perhaps you could use Gitification?
@Arakasi, thanks very much! I am pretty pleased with this one! only problem is now I need to do all my models as nice!
again, thanks to everyone for taking the time to browse my blog, I love conversing with you all and using your many talents to teach myself how to learn new things when it comes to painting, I think the biggest thing i've changed with this force is actually taking time on each model and not skimping on any parts like i was wont to do! and now for once in my illustrious tenure in the hobby I finally have an army I'm 100% pleased with, I can actually see these guys and this blog stretching away into the future much like Gits' blog as i expand it!
Next up is the death Co. and the dreadnought over the next couple of days so stay tuned!

@Gits, Feel free to try anything you like mate! :-) I usually don't like edge highlights but as I worked on it it just turned out like that and I liked it, just the same as my marines, only 3 colours and a wash, nice and simple! Automatically Appended Next Post: teaser!

Post by: nerdfest09
Thanks Dave! :-) it's totally not Gweneth then if it's TITS! it IS easy though, kind of zenithal but not really, just prime black, then squirt some white from above each model, then wash black a couple of times, then fortress grey highlight then wash with asurmen blue then again a couple times with badab black then highlight finely again with fortress grey and she's apples!

@Dave! yeah, table top passable :-) some of the blending on the skin isn't real smooth and i don't paint the eyes I just shade them because i think in battle with those facial expressions you wouldn't really see them anyway? most of those badass heads are space wolf ones, the first really beardy ones are from the TW cavalry and the others are just from the normal boxes, you can pick up all 18 on ebay for about $6- I like to shave bits off like mohawks and stuff to make them individual :-)

Everything was well executed, good fun and done in the best spirit. I don't need to say how much I love the miniatures, that's obvious but I'll highlight how much I enjoyed the other little gems i encountered along the way. The cake, the comic, the board, the photographs and of course your beautiful dogs all added to the enjoyment. I have to admit that those things made this the best Dakka blog I've read to date.

Cheers boys! hey, do you want to see a dreadnought in 4 hours? yeah of course you do right I haven't done anything since that last shot of him up a couple of posts but my mate finally organised a game with me! for today and yesterday i went on the RSPCA million paws walk with the kids (hairy kids) and got home late arvo so i needed to really rush and get him painted for today, and I did it! phew! I like him but i'll spend more time next one i do and be a tad neater, but venerable brother Adamus is now ready to stalk the battlefield and unleash his fury!.... bring it!
speaking of battle, I am pretty darn excited to be playing my first game (and still learning) with my Flesh Eaters! my mate Adam is playing BA so we're both using the same codex at just under 2000 points, and i managed to include all my models named and designed after my friends and family we have Chaplain Edwardo (named after my dad with normal armour and jp) librarian Tomas who always gets stuck in with no thought for personal safety then there's Venerable brother Adamus (dreadnought) and sergeant Luke (my red haired and brutish friend and trainer in Muay Thai) and lastly Chapter master Naimad (named after ... me it's just my name backwards... nice eh!)
we'll be writing a battle report and taking pics so hopefully I can show you all tomorrow how it went should i just post it in here so you know it's here?
enough rambling from the Nerdfest, here's the quickly painted dreadnought the highlights are similar to the ones on the raider but it was dark when I used my *ahem* photography skills!

The only problem with trying to make marines dynamic , is half the time they look like theyre dancing. To my strange little brain at least. I find it takes away from the seriousness of it all, especially against these list players.
You could try to claim an extra save for Sergeant Luke because hes doing a jig.

Here it is, my first game with my Flesh eaters marines! man did we have some fun! both of us were fielding fairly small forces at about or fractionally under 2000 points and as we both aren't overly experienced with the rules we took our time and played it as best we could, so i apologise if we make any errors with the rules
there's a lot of pics here taken during the game and i'll do my best to make it interesting and good reading well, lets get started eh!
Flesh Eaters space marines VS Blood Angels
Flesh Eaters force:
Chapter master Naimad
Terminator librarian Tomas
Chaplain Edwardo
Tac squad Incisal led by Sergeant Luke
Tac squad Alveolar led by Sergeant Janus
2x Rhino transports
Devastator squad w/plasma cannons led by Sergeant Erinus
Death Co. (led by chaplain Edwardo)
Terminator squad CC all with lightning claws
Furioso Dreadnought Adamus with Blood talons
Landraider Redeemer Optimus.
Blood Angels force:
Commander Dante
Sanguinary guard
Death Co.
Chaplain
Landraider
Terminator squad w/sang priest hammers and lightning claws
Terminator Epistolary
DC dreadnought
Storm Raven (not pictured)
The chapter master of the Flesh eaters Commander Naimad was seated at his pulpit in orbit, a muscle in his jaw bunched and he read and re read the data slate, a world where they kept a chapter keep and used it's inhabitants for recruiting initiates to their dying chapter was apparently being scouted by chaos forces, red armoured marines brighter than the plate worn by the Flesh eaters had been spotted through the swirling storms of dust that blanketed the planet, any attempt to make contact to confirm their identity was foiled by the dampening effect the dust had on their equipment, assuming Word bearers or even the dread chaos army of Khorne were below them, Naimad felt the felt the welcome and familiar lust of battle building through his augmented body! surging to his feet the veins in his bald head visibly throbbing he called throughout his battle barge the speaker reaching every section "Brothers of the Flesh eaters, we prepare for battle! once again we gain a chance to prove ourselves loyal to the emperor and not degenerates as some think! all squads assemble in launch bay 3 in 45 minutes"
Commander Dante strode through the hissing doors to his personal chamber to stand before his polished armour plate assembled and being prepared for his wearing on the planet below, A successor chapter from their own gene stock the Flesh eaters always known and watched for their tendency to fall into blood lust quicker than most of their lineage were tracked to the world of Evandalus Prime by his scout squads, his mission and duty to the chapter was to attempt to contact their current master Naimad and attempt to coerce the chapter back into the fold of the more regulated Blood Angels successors, the reputation of the force below was great enough that Dante himself thought it necessary to be here in person to try and talk reason with a commander more prone to asking questions of himself after the war was over and he had slaked his hunger on the flesh of his enemies, not a prospect Dante was looking forward to as they would be a far greater asset to the battle raging through the galaxy and a formidable enemy should they turn on his forces.
Set up: Evandalus prime, a planet on the far edge of sector 333 below the belt of primus, a world choked by viscous dust storms and home to hardy imperial citizens who while kept far away from constant watching by the imperial politicians still held an unwavering loyalty to the god emperor and worked hard to maintain the planets underground nutrient facilities.
on the east side of the planet closest to the second sun was a training ground of ruined buildings and abandoned outposts this was where the Flesh eaters were to land and begin to unravel who was on their planet.....
As the Blood Angel force was solely deepstriking from orbit my Flesh eaters deployed first, the DC led by chaplain Edwardo took up behind ruins to the right of the board while in the center my Redeemer and a rhino containing Tac squad Incisal supported by furioso Adamus set down, on the far left my dev squad took up a position behind a multi story ruin hoping to move up for a commanding view of the battle, feeling confident as near them was Librarian Tomas and Chapter master Naimad and further behind them near the rear was rhino containing Tac squad Alveolar.
Turn one:
Flesh Eaters: Redeemer,Rhino and Furioso all move forward 6inches while the Dev squad move into the upper levels of the ruins to obtain a better firing arc and attempt to pierce the storms and flickering light of the war zone.
BA: nothing but an eerie silence pervades......
Turn two:
BA: rolls to deepstrike Dante and Sang guard but a glitch in the co-ordinates makes them fail to appear, re setting the dials ensures the DC with chaplain appear near the building occupied by the Flesh eater Dev squad also in close proximity to Tomas and Naimad! High above them the thunderhawk carrying the BA landraider made a pass but also failed to drop it's cargo on the ground due to large blast of wind carrying rocks dangerous to the mighty machines engines, luckily the storm raven was already below the brief wind storm and appeared through the haze on the right side of the board carrying it's cargo of a DC dreadnought hovering in sight of the Flesh eaters Redeemer.
BA storm Raven gets it's target acquired and locks on firing 4 Bloodstrike missiles directly at the Redeemer Optimus! missiles 1+2 hit the toughened front armour and glanced off arcing back into the sky before detonating harmlessly, it's 3rd missile corkscrewed away wildly chasing a large flying native to the planet exploding in it's warm flesh and showering the ground with it's blood like red rain a fitting picture for the Eaters of Flesh to fight under, the last missile fired from the storm raven it's gunner making sure all targets were locked and systems active, the Bloodstrike missile leapt towards the redeemers armoured front glacis next to the assault cannon where it promptly sputtered and died! falling harmlessly to be ground under it's mighty tracks! the Redeemer's driver then opened the hatch leaning out and gave the SR a armoured middle finger hurling abuse! in frustration the SR gunner then thumbed the activation rune on the assault cannon raking the Flesh eaters Dc with large caliber bullets hitting 4 of them and wounding with all shots but the fury and passion they posses made them shrug off the injuries as if they never happened and they stood tall.
On the left side of the battle the BA DC launched themselves into librarian Tomas firing madly with bolt pistols hitting him 6 times and wounding him with 4 shots only one shot luckily finding purchase in his neck between the terminator armour's seal with one wound left Tomas is them targeted by a Dc with an infernus pistol, being a warrior of great renown and many centuries of battle he turned aside just as the shot hit home and it failed to wound him!
The Flesh eaters hurried to action rhino carrying Tac squad Alveolar moving 12 inches away from the BA DC. the Redeemer moves forward 6inches while Tac squad Incisal rushes to cover and disembarks Sergeant Luke and his marines, Furioso Adamus follows the Redeemer and the Flesh eaters DC. jump over to gain cover 12inches forward.
Librarian Tomas turns his inner eye to channel the powers of the warp preparing to cast smite on the DC. assailing him but the wound in his neck has drained him of energy and he fails his test! pulling his bolt pistol in fluid motion he rains a barrage of shots into the DC. hitting two with 1 wound which he saved in their desperate attempt to clash with him, while squad Incisal prepared to help their mighty Librarian by firing a volley of bolter rounds into them the self propelled shells hitting 3 of them and wounding with each explosive round! unluckily though the DC. were in such a fever of battle they again didn't even register they'd been hit and shrugged off the injuries! frustrated by the lack of wounds Sergeant Luke ordered his missile launcher marine to open fire hitting two DC, when the smoke cleared his enhanced vision saw two DC. lying prone on the earth, smiling in triumph sergeant Luke turned to commend his squad when one of his battle brothers shouted to him, Luke turned to see the two DC. marines pick themselves up and dust the rocks from their armour joining their brothers racing around the corner at Tomas!
The Flesh Eaters Redeemer gunner dropped down in his hatch again activating his firing stud on the Assault cannon a blazing hail of shots at the SR hitting it 4 times with no damage caused, in frustration he then fired his Flamestorm cannon at it realising it wouldn't do any damage but hoped it would prove a deterrent for them coming closer!
Feeling his blood trickling from the wound in his neck and his energy failing him, Tomas decides he can't get away from the BA DC. and decides to go out swinging! he assaults the DC. hitting one and then proceeded to roll a 1 doing nothing to them! this provides them the opportunity to retaliate which they do with all the fury they possess hitting him 4 times and finding purchase in his his mighty armour 3 times laying him low as his his life fades from him in a pool of blood Nooooooo!
Turn Three:
BA move: Adam rolls again to deepstrike his Landraider which he fails! he then tried again to launch Dante and Sang guard into battle and fails again! lastly he tries for his terminator squad to arrive and gets lucky landing them near Tactical squad Incisal!
this is then followed up by the BA DC. launching themselves into the building occupied by the Flesh eaters Dev squad led by Sergeant Erinus and the SR flying over the field to hover behind the Flesh Eaters Dc. dropping it's payload of the DC. dreadnought along the flight path!
No shooting from the BA so expectant are they on getting to grips with the enemy that they now assault, both sides are still not entirely clear on who they are fighting as the storms keep interfering with their communication devices and whether they are friend or foe it's too late for both armies as already blood has been spilled! The BA DC. dreadnought Neilio assaults the Flesh eaters DC. a flurry of blows connecting twice with two wounds taken, Chaplain Edwardo saves one blow but another brother wasn't as lucky and was promptly cleaved in twain by the mighty war machines Blood talons, as one marine fell the DC. Dread was taken by battle lust and swung again at Chaplain Edwardo punching through his armour and causing damage which he duly ignored by chanting hymnals from the chapters history stirring his warriors onto greater feats of valor! Edwardo's Squad now launch their own assault against the edifice of metal in front of them, 5 hits against the dreadnought from power weapons do nothing and don't even scratch his paint but in the moment they still crave the fight, pushing through their brothers is the Ex chapter master of the Flesh eaters who succumbed to the Black rage sporting a Power fist and another brother with a thunder hammer hoping to penetrate the war machine now disoriented by the flurry of obnoxious power weapon attacks, the thunder hammer marine hits squarely on the DC dreadnought the ring of metal even loud through the helmets of the surrounding warriors but his blow fails to penetrate the sarcophagus, moving into an advantageous position the Ex chapter master swings his fist in rage his centuries of experience and battle skill focused now on the one enemy in front of him the crackling energies from his power fist spark and dance around his fingers as he plunges his entire arm up to his elbow into the dreadnoughts body, with fluids leaking and motors dying the dreadnought sparks internally causing a massive explosion ripping him apart and killing one DC to the right of him, as his blood talon shears off in the blast it punctured the brothers helmet dropping him instantly, sweating and crazy eyed with battle lust the Ex master now Dc. looks expectantly for more combat!
On the other side of the battle bloody carnage ensues as the BA DC. assault Dev squad in the upper echelons of the ruins, with frantic dice rolls they score 11 hits and then 10 wounds utterly decimating the entire squad before they even got to fire a shot!
Deciding to move for advantage in the battle and bring the fight closer the Flesh eaters Redeemer moves forward towards the BA terminators followed by the furioso Adamus, while the Dc. attempt to close the distance to the BA DC., Tac squad Incisal take cover behind their rhino and Chapter Master Naimad moves away from the BA DC.
The Redeemer now fires it's mighty flamestorm cannons at the BA termies hitting and wounding 4 who's armour blessedly held up against the searing heat, switching to assault cannon he opens fire, the close range providing nowhere to hide as the terminators were hit 3 times and wounded 2 times with one mighty hero falling with his helmet lense now a bloody hole from which his brain leaked.
The rhino carrying squad Alveolar fires it's pintle mounted storm bolter at the BA DC. hitting and wounding one marine who made his save as expected and continued to stand firm, adding a pot shot Chapter Master naimad fires a bolt round into the BA DC. hoping for a lucky mark but while he managed to hit one as his training and standing should expect he failed to wound the DC.
Turn Four:
Adam rolls to deepstrike Dante again with his Sanguinary guard successfully landing within sight of Chapter master Naimad, while his dice rolls were hot his Landraider also appeared on the side of the board in between the two tactical squads one still embarked in their rhino transport.
BA Terminator squad bunch up around the redeemer while the bloodthirsty BA DC. move towards the rhino containing Tac squad Alveolar, a screaming pitch from the skies above heralded the Storm Raven flying towards the Flesh eaters DC. and Furioso Adamus.
Sensing the battle turning in their favor the BA push the advantage firing the landraider's twin linked Lascannon into the rhino with squad Alveolar on board but fails to destroy it, switching methods he now fires his multi melta at the same target hitting penetrating and destroying the pintle mounted storm bolter. using power of the machine spirit the other lascannon fires at the empty Rhino shaking the crew, adding fire support to the venerable tank the BA DC. fire into the rhino closest to them penetrating but causing no harm.
while battle raged intensely around the ruins, nearest the abandoned outpost the storm raven opened fire with it's Hurricane Bolters into the Flesh Eaters DC. hitting two but the skills they posses kept them from harm, as they moved to protect themselves the Storm raven opened up with a hail of bullets from the Assault Cannon hitting and wounding 4 marines who suffered no fatalities thanks to the fires raging within their hearts!
Furioso Adamus turned to face the threat and was hit squarely by a multi melta shot that penetrated his mighty frame exploding him with force and scattering his parts over the surrounding field.
moving now to assault the Redeemer the BA Terminators hit the huge war engine with thunder hammers but the thick armour stops any damage from them.
In the Ruins the BA DC. assault the rhino carrying squad Alveolar, with such fury and battle lust they strike and hit the transport 7 times with 4 hits penetrating the sides causing the rhino to explode in a massive fireball the sides blossoming outwards like a metal flower, picking themselves from the burning wreck only 5 of the ten man squad survive pulling weapons to bear on the assailants.
seeing the leader of the Blood Angels commander Dante land in a flurry of regal wings and brightly polished golden armour, Chapter Master Naimad rushes towards this worthy opponent as the Flesh eaters terminators disembark the Redeemer to battle the BA termies in their midst, close by the Tactical squad led by Luke move away to gain a better line of sight.
His face splitting in a feral grin Naimad still running towards Dante and his surrounding Sanguinary guard he fires his bolt pistol on the move neatly sending a bolt round through the throat of one Sanguinary guard his spurting blood and armoured form crashing into his brothers as he died,
Tactical squad Incisal fires at the BA DC. but fails to score any hits from their distance while the 5 remaining marines from Tac squad Alveolar hit the BA DC. with 3 hits causing one wound that was easily saved!
The Redeemer fires again at the BA termies causing a total of 3 wounds all saved by the thick battle suit they wore, changing tack the assault cannon roars to life again scoring 4 hits and 4 wounds, the close proximity proving deadly for one BA terminator who was blown asunder.
Tactical squad Alveolar sensing imminent death decide to assault the BA DC. as there was no chance of escape but the BA DC. were ready and with higher initiative struck first decisively killing 4 of the 5 marines instantly while sergeant Janus was bought low by a well place thunder hammer strike to his midriff crushing his organs and cracking his armour like a crustacean's shell.
The two terminator squads crash into each other the fury of the assault like a thunderclap, lightning claws spitting incandescent sparks while humming thunder hammers crashed against pauldrons, with 12 hits the Flesh Eaters bring wounds to 6 of the the BA but retaliating before they die they struck back with the last vestiges of strength hitting and wounding one Flesh Eater who saved the wound easily while another Flesh Eater was run through by a well place strike from a power sword, at the rear of the BA termies the Librarian channeled the warp energies smiting one Flesh Eater into the dust easily then bringing another crashing down dead next to his brother with his power weapon, both parties warily encircle one another, their martial prowess on both sides making them cautious to say the least!
Turn Five:
BA movement, Dante detaches from his Guard rushing headlong at the Master of the Flesh eaters, his wings whistling as he sprinted to engage, even over the roar of battle and the screeching abrasions of the dust on the surrounding buildings and vehicles Dante could still hear Naimad's undulating battle cry and sense the fury in the oncoming fight!
Overhead the Storm raven flies over the chapter masters towards the boards center, now free from their chapter master, the Sanguinary guard launch their packs to close on the Flesh Eaters DC. before they can cause damage to their liege!
The BA DC. move cautiously towards the hunkered down Tac squad led by Sergeant Luke and the BA Landraider chases down the empty Rhino.
Both sides sensing the battle closing to an end as few troops from either side remain, the BA Landraider shoots at the Rhino it chases glancing and destroying the Storm bolter, shooting again it aimed it's melta at the rear and failed to penetrate as the rhino skewed around to prevent the shot hitting, firing assault cannon into Tac squad Alveolar one shot blows a hapless marine from his feet his arm disintegrating in a shower of ceramite and bone.
Now within range and screaming prayers from his vox caster the BA DC. assault Tac squad Alveolar over the barricade, still reeling from the shots fired from the Landraider they were ill prepared for the animal fury of the DC. and the black clad marines made short and bloody work of every marine leaving none alive to fight again!
The Sanguinary Guard (with red thirst) clashes noisily into the Flesh eaters DC. who pass their leadership test and bring the fight to their foe up close and personal, the Sang Guard attack first killing all but Chaplain Edwardo truly a legend of the chapter, Edwardo retaliates embedding his crozius in the golden helm of one guard taking pleasure in seeing the life lights fade from the green lenses, turning to wrench the crozius from his kill Edwardo realises that it's stuck fast in the helmet and cannot pull it free in time to deflect a shattering blow from a Sanguinary guard with mighty powerfist, Edwardo continues to scream litany as he goes down.
with the battle noise a muted sound in the background, the two mighty Chapter masters continued their charge into combat the only thing they were focused on was each other, their own breathing and familiar feel of their battle plate readying themselves for what would not be an easy or structured fight!
Dante leaps the last few metres to Naimad his weapons ringing heavy against his armour luckily for Naimad his attacks cause no damage but in the opening strikes Dante rolls a one leaving himself open to Naimad pressing his advantage and with a brutal and swift kick of his power armoured boot he connected squarely in Dantes big golden balls, the shining chapter masters eyes nearly popped through his lenses at the sheer force of the blow in his groin causing him to falter and lose a wound still confident at kicking Dante in the gonads Naimad hits him 3 times causing 3 wounds still struggling to get his breath Dante loses another 2 wounds bringing him down to 1 left! (probably the best part of the whole game was kicking Dante's nuts )
Turn six:
No new movement or assaults or shooting, with so few on the board we decided to focus on the battle between the two mighty heroes to determine the victor, Adam had slightly more troops on board at this stage so whoever came out on top shall be victorious!
Dante still reeling from the savagery shown by Naimad, the Flesh Eater was a brutal combatant who with centuries of experience wasted no opening and pressed the attack like none other Dante had seen before, but the legendary Chapter Master of the Blood Angels hadn't held his position of power by sheer luck and countered next with a flurry of blows so fast and with such power that Naimad stumbled under the onslaught being hit 3 times and suffering 2 wounds, both warriors down to Dante with 1 wound remaining and Naimad with only 2 left the next round by Naimad was to be important and he unleashed those power claws into a dance of strikes and parries with a fervor that would have been awe inspiring had they been fighting together and not against one another, wounding Dante 2 times Naimad hoped to bleed him out and walk away to re group his chapter but Dante's armour saved him luckily and he lunged twice at the Flesh eater master his blade piercing Naimad's armour in the weaker section of his abdomen and armpit causing 2 wounds himself, Naimad roared in anger and pain swinging his claws in a backhanded stroke that would have seen him cleave Dantes helmet in two but the Blood Angels Chapter master still had his blade lodged in Naimads side, his twisting swing causing the blade to bite deeper and through his organs, with no saves Naimad fell to the ground his armour bent and rendered by the battle, still his eyes shone with battle lust and spittle foamed at the corners of his ruined mouth, "we are still loyal he coughed, the blood of Sangiunius can't be taken from our bodies or our hearts" Dante looked down as Naimad faded into unconsciousness battling within himself now to expunge the Flesh eaters as an enemy of the imperium or to keep careful watch on them to see what moves they played? the bond of shared blood caused Dante to turn and gingerly call together his troops to leave this planet, the Blood angels barely victorious especially when faced with brothers of their father primarch.
Vowing to keep tabs on the Flesh Eaters, Dante ordered his scouts to assemble and implant monitoring devices throughout the north side of the planet where the heavy dust storms abated and signals could still be transmitted, he hoped the Eaters were honest and still on the side of good, but if they faltered in any way he would be here again and next time he would wipe any trace of them from the records!
Well, that's my first proper battle and report! sorry it's so long but i just got into the swing of it what a bloody great fight too, Adams BA all deepstriking caused me a problem with no one to shoot at and a few lucky dice rolls saw his DC. in the best spot to chase down a bunch of my warriors, but we hit back and it evened out getting really intense with the close combat giving him a scare or two! even though I lost I don't consider it a bad one, it was so close and it could have gone either way, now i just need to figure out why we fight again and again
I hope you enjoyed it everyone i sure did!

An excellent BatRep Damo. You should post it in the Battle Reports section of dakka. There are a lot of folks who frequent that who might not otherwise see it & who I'm sure would enjoy it greatly.

Too much awesomeness. Can we have a close up pix of that beautifully painted flamer template?

I took your suggestion and popped the Bat Rep in the Bat Rep forum as well so it might get a bit more viewing pleasure :-)
seriously I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed writing that up, the game was long and tedious with lots of page flicking and head scratching on my behalf! but it also had a heap of laughable moments and smack talk between us, we're now eager to have another game against each other doing the same sort of thing although i'll try and get some more dramatic shots during the game :-)
I'll also do a close up shot of the template soon for you, it was easy to do using Vallejo paints with the dropper bottle. I just washed the template with water and dropped some yellow ink onto it and pulled it around to cover, then a drop of orange in the centre and some fire red towards the end, I then just pulled and pushed the colours together and blotted them with a tissue to get the effect as it dried, give it a go it took about 5 minutes!
cheers talk soon!

Interested? I demand a full blown step by step picture-in-picture video-with-voice-over commentary and an extra DVD for extra contents by the director. :-D
In short: yes please.

Consider it done Leo! I'll even add directors commentary and special features if you like? perhaps a nice clip of me eating that showercap i promised Pyriel overlaid with some nice hip hop tunes?

Hey guys, can i ask a hopefully simple sort of question of you? I have bouncing around in my brain the idea of making a 5 man sternguard squad from parts i have already with minimum of cost involved, only 'problem' is that I only have ferrox umbra bolters to use for them (box cartridge/scope) I have seen that nearly everyone uses them (sternguard) with combi weapons as if this is a necesity for them to be useful? can i have them as a viable little squad just with them using the special ammo they can come with? or do i need to have melta etc?...
I have an idea of them podding or in a razorback using the special ammo to deny cover or bring down tyranids?
cool, that's all i wanted to ask before i go home to bed
catch you soon...

No, definitely not necessary. But for 5 points, it's one of the best point-for-value items the marines get... and the combi-weapons give them dimensions they don't have without them. The melta especially. In my unit, on some of them I just took little pieces of small tubing, painted it red and stuck it under the barrel and called it a melta nozzle. Everybody knows what it is when they see it so I've never heard any negative comments.

I've had some success in simulating combi-weapons by shaving off the muzzle of a bolter and replacing it with the barrel of a melta gun or inferno pistol. I've also made combi-flamers with the same method, as inspired by the forgeworld combi-flamer, here. It works out pretty good, and no one has complained about it so far, so

You can totally use them naked just fine. They aren't as hyper-competitive as they can be, but its always good to have options, and you can always make more later, right?
Best sternguard config I've ever run, 5 combi-meltas and 5 combiplasma in a drop pod. Drop on turn one, combat squad into the 5 man groups of each weapon (you can combat squad out of a pod). 5 meltas slag a land raider, 5 plasmas kill off 4 of the termis inside. They got pretty well messed up the next turn, but made up points and then some, plus took most of the fire away from other targets.

I thought I've seen pretty definitive proof somewhere in a FAQ that you can't combat squad out of a drop pod...

No book handy, but Im pretty sure DP have the rule that they can do this. You can't put 1 combat squad in the pod and the other in reserves. per the faq.

Thanks for all the responses guys! I'll make up a 5man sternguard squad and use them naked, they're still going to give me some more scope and a bit more kick when I use them even like that! then i don't need to worry about parts and stuff and i can use what i already have hiding in the Nerd cave ;-)
@Vent: you need to learn how to play man! I've been 'into' 40k now for about 18 years but this was probably my 4th game i've ever played! the rules i find hard to grasp as there are so many variable factors, but thinking of the game like an action movie i wanted to play out helped me along, hence the style of batrep i did, makes me want to play more, that's also why i'm asking about different squads and stuff to make me more competitive, i'm even thinking about putting 3 dreadnoughts in my 3 drop pods just for a laugh! :-)

hey damo,
thought i would add my two cent in on the sternguard. personally one of my favorite units can do a little bit of everything i usally run my little five man with two combi plas and two meltas but that is just me. awesome bat rep sounded very intense man. can't wait to read your next report. but if you want uber onpetiveness do what whalemusic said ten dudes in a pod with 5 combi melta and 5 combi plasma. (even combi weapons get rapid fire...please correct me if i am wrong though gents.)

Run them like that nerd. I run my squad with a HF and combi-melta. It's not the most competitive but it's fun and can tackle a number of units that way. Just go with what looks cool! It's the best way.

Thanks Imperial monkey, I am all about the fun aspect of this hobby and a bit of positive reinforcement goes a long way with me! :-) I just waded through my bits box to make sure I have all the parts to make the squad up and turns out I do! so when my ferrox umbra bolters turn up I'm set to lock and load those bad boys! I know they won't be really competitive but at least they will be something different and yet still quite capable of putting on some hurt! unlike other squads where you are nearly forced into certain loadouts to make them even remotely useful! I'm looking forward to having them in my arsenal.
speaking of looking forward to things :-) guess what i did? I just placed an order with an English company that makes fine resin miniatures! mostly I bought a gift for my best mate to cheer him up, today he came over and was quite vocal about how much he loves tartaros terminators so i thought i'd suprise him with a squad as i was planning on buying some small stuff anyway :-) and now i can look forward to his face when I give them to him as well as my bits i need!
and lastly, more w.i.p updates from me tomorrow, I've been working on drop pods and speeders and a couple more marines from Tac squad 3 that are nearly finished, nothing too exciting but at least you'll know i'm still working on my Flesh Eaters! :-)

your buddy is gonna be shocked and amazed i hope he likes em. oh cool ammo for the sternguard if your not gonna give em combis is the one that treat it like its plasma bolt gets hot and everything has the range of suck though (18 in) i might be off but i really am looking forward to your take on sternguard.

Oh my lordy lord! I was tidying up my pics folders and I came across a bunch of old models i painted when i was getting back into the hobby about 4 years ago so to keep you interested while i continue painting my Flesh Eaters I thought it would be kind of cool to see how far i've come with the help of all the amazing Dakkaites with their skills in painting and modeling as well as rules and prep work! it's really strange how you don't realise how many things you learn as you go, i'd probably say mold lines and thinning the paint were two the biggest things that have helped me progress so far, as well as the subtle nudges when I cut corners and others picked up on it and gently put me on a better painting track, lastly the honesty and willingness of everyone on dakka to make me feel like I belonged even though my painting skills were far from brilliant kept me enthralled and wanting to learn everything I could.
So thanks Dakka, and to all the individuals (you know who you are) I couldn't have done it without your help! you all get an internet fist bump!
Well, to start off these were the first models i did when i got back into 40k the Exorcists, I liked the fluff and thought they'd be cool to do, but as you can see my reds were quite flat and I neglected a few details in order to 'finish' them off.
Next I tried my hand at my favorite chapter the space wolves this was where I discovered the joy of drybrushing and overbrushing, as you can see they turned out quite chalky but it expanded my repertoire and I eventually learnt how to use it sparingly and in unison with other techniques to produce nice looking stuff.
after realising that it was going to take me many years to get an army I was happy with I wanted a new force, something I could paint fast and still look good, I always loved the pic of the Raven guard in the back of the codex so i researched black, they were really fast to paint but not very spectacular as a model and i have since really adjusted the method to suit me and look much better (like my current 2 chaplains) these Raven Guard were probably painted 3 years ago?
first chaplain i ever painted:
And i'm guessing some you realise i don't enjoy painting tanks and vehicles right here's a couple of my first attempts! terrible terrible jobs,
and for a brief moment I was nearly lured to the dark side early on! thought Nurgle could be pretty fun!
well, I think i've improved a bit and it's nice to see some old work I did and now i'm inspired to go and work on my other stuff which i'm going to do right now.....
hope you enjoyed that brief trip down memory lane!

Really nice job on those executioners Damo. The one with the free-hand skull on his pad is especially nice, as is the termie before him.

Post by: nerdfest09
Hey Gits, thanks mate, all I can see when i look at them now is mold lines, brush strokes and bad paint! :-) but they were a good starting point for me, the skull was a decal i painted over to try and do the chapter symbol. Automatically Appended Next Post: It's time to hijack my own thread again did some w.i.p on my 3 drop pods i'm doing at once! I was a bit torn on how to paint them up, I wanted them to be weathered as they hurtle through the atmosphere but I also wanted them to fit with my fairly clean look of the army so i've taken some artistic license so far, anyway here's where they're at.
to start i primed them all in plate metal, then used liquid mask sparingly before I used Dragon red primer on the red parts.
then i used the airbrush and shaded the pod doors and fins with a dark red mixed with black, then added more black and just feathered all the lower parts to begin the scorch marks, with the interior metal, i actually experimented a bit as i was running out of my last pot of Badab Black so I used Badab black mixed with a few drops of vallejo black paint and thinners through the airbrush, this I applied heavily to flood the parts, it then naturally separated from the edges and really darkened the metal parts, hopefully i can bring it up a touch with some dry brushing and details later on, I think i may have gone a tad overboard with the chipping in my opinion but it's too late now and i'll just have to work with it and hope once the details are done it will fit in with my army.
I also finished 2 more marines i did my heavy bolter guy and my melta guy for my 3rd Tac squad.
well, that's it for today, I also have been working on 2 attack bikes for pyriel but hit a snag or two which has put me behind with them, i had a mate assemble them and he stuck a few bits together that I had to prise off as well as attack some mold lines! but they're getting there, i just need to get some energy drink into me and a few good days off!

As usual, thanks guys :-) I'll keep going with my plan on the pods if everyone thinks they're o.k so far, next I might finish all the metal parts and work on the edge highlights lastly next week.
I also figured out what else i need to have enough for a good mix of tactics, so i'll also be doing a jump pack and termie Sang priest soon, as well as a couple of Baal's, speeders and a bucket of assault marines (of course) might even do a DC dred just for laughs.... evil laughs...... Mwahahahahahahaah!

Yeah the pods are looking very nice NF09, I like how much battle damage you've done. Really does look like they have come down through the atmosphere quite a few times in their lives.

Thanks giraffex! the more i look at the pods the more i like them :-) which is good considering they're mine eh! and when I put them next to my other models they look pretty cool even though the colours are slightly different, I'm going to try and get some work done on them but my work roster for the next 2-3 weeks is really nasty :-(
