I finally find some time to post my WIP Army which is about 2500 pts worth of infantry and vehicles. I am setting the goal of getting this army done by end of next spring '08, with a vehicle and squad being completed about every 2 weeks, which I think is a pretty acceptable pace for being in school full-time. I have pretty much everything built except for 2 special weapons squads, which I hope I can kit bash catachans and cadians to create as I like the bare arms the catachan sprues provide. I'm also going to try to convert my vehicles with some extra bits such as extra armor on my chimera turrets made from plasticard, and gratuitous amounts of extra tracks bolted to the bodies.

For the painting scheme, I wanted something mostly inorganic but with an urban feel that can be painted quickly to tabletop standard but still look pleasing. I first decided on an easy catachan/camo green scheme from the codex (I think it was called the 89th Xenobane or something like that) but remembered a nice unique color/camo pattern from the first BG article.

This is the pattern I have tried to replicate on my vehicles, and the same colors that I'm painting my vehicles in the same pattern and infantry in the same colors (about) :

Fire Wastes Scheme

Here is the WIP Chimera that I have done in the above pattern:

first update of sorts, its been a while, but I finally got that first squad done, and am beginning work on my commander now. Here are the pictures of the squad I've just completed. there pretty much rank and file troops so I wanted to try and get em done as quick as possible. It was my first time trying to apply a Plasma/energy type glow to a model also, and am wondering how you guys think it turned out.

C&C always welcome!

Cool color scheme, I like the highlighted gray around the edges on the chimera, but I don't seem to see it repeated on the infantry.

I have been experimenting with dipping my Guard in an effort to accelerate them to completion, but it is harder going than I though. Discipline is a key ingredient in getting a large project done like this! I apologize for the darkness on the pics I'm trying to still figure out how to take good photos of my minis.

Anyways here is my 2nd squad more or less finished. I'd like to get the command squad for the platoon done, sometime by next year (I hope! j/k).

Part of the reason I've been slacking is because I've started a second army when CSM came out. I have been trying to get my force together and after waffling back and forth between my theme and legion, I decided on the Claws of Lorek. It sounds and looks cool.

I've purchased and assembled (for the most part, still trying to nail out my conversions) a small army:

Khorne Lord
Terminator Lord
5 Terminators
10 Possessed
20 Rubric Marines
Thousand Sons Squad
2 Obliterators
and a converted Havoc Squad

I'm not sure what else to grab but I was thinking of 3 bikes and a couple of rhinos, and maybe a land raider.

Anyways here's My Terminator Lord almost ready for priming

Mabey the pistol holster could be a dark color? Model looks great, then you're slapped in the face with that white; kinda looks out of place.

I like the striping on the armor. It looks good. Is that holster going to stay pink? There could be better ways to say he's a manly man with a secret fetish for Slaanesh.

I also like the wall section on the heavy weapons team from earlier.

Mind explaining how you did the striping? I did some similar on my "Claws of Badab" and I quite like yours. And I agree, the holster would look better a brown/grey/black instead of white.

Ahh, you caught me!

The holster isn't quite finished.

@Le Grognard & Meohistoles1 - I was trying to go for a bolt holster made out of fresh flayed skin, I've got the Slannesh part down, but I'm not sure how to create it for for an undivided/mixed army theme kitsch. The Ac head should be finished later today along with the backpack, so I will replace these with the completed model. Thanks for the comments also!

@brado - Sure, I used a Connoisseur 0 Red Pony Round bamboo brush (I think). The paint was Vallejo Game color 51, Black. I just thinned it with water to a skim milk consistency and did several test strokes before trying to shoulder first. I did all of the marks one direction first and went from bottom to top of the shoulder pad, and then from top to bottom in the other direction randomly. The shoulder was probably the hardest as it is an odd shape so I had to be mindful of equal pressure on the brush all of the surface. I just used a light flicking motion where the tip of the brush was the only part that contacted the surface.

Ah! Great chaos scheme, striping on the leg armor is groovy and adds a nice flavor. Solid painting throughout all your stuff, surprised I missed this before ...

But sweet CSM, look forward to more.

So here is an update of sorts. I've got my first rank and file squad still going and I've shifted gears a bit trying to get my lord finished. I did the unique legion marking of the claw stripes already, but then decided to tackle the head. I'm going to have this done later today I hope if my painting goes alright. This was also my first time at trying to paint a difficult light illuminating from below. It probably could use better light green highlights on the bottom of the face.

I'm really in love with these new inks. Combine them with drybrushing or layering and the reds I get are super rich and luscious when combined with the blue and black inks. I do find however though that the old inks mixed with Future Floor Wax and then dabbed up with a tissue are great for creating colored values in very small places such as eye sockets.

*edit* Also it's a better (and better lit) view of his skull pile!

Is there any way to show the green lights coming out of his suit? I'm guessing you're doing the "Horus Under glow". Which does like once you know where it comes from.

Take that green and put it in the skull pile if you can.

Metals look nice and silky. Very good.

That's what it's called! I knew there was a name for it

I had the same thought about the base as well, I think the stumbling block for me is what color to paint the stone. Maybe a deep rich, red/brown, like lava rock?

If your minis have a a good amount of red in them then I might think about something else that would contrast it, like a cool color. Otherwise it's too much of the same, which dilutes the power of the figure colors. You just want highlights here and there that have elements of the colors you used, but not a lot of the same.

Here's an update on my Termie lord.

The Terminator Lord is pretty much done except a few details on the face and legs. Also I have been thinking of the cool color base idea and will probably go with a Hawk Turquoise/Asurmen Blue ink for the stone and then just some citadel washes on the skulls. I'd like to do a green under-glow from below the stone, but to get an overall even tone I'd have to remove all the skulls. I still might do that, but they're glued in place I'll have to see what I tricks I can pull.

I'm still working on getting my photo setup done. I think I need to use thinner paper than what I am using on my lightbox as it blocks too much sunlight, causing me to use a shop lamp w/ a 60W bulb to illuminate my subjects.

Comments and Criticism please.

What things can I do to become a better painter? What can I do to make a more accurate and realistic underglow on the lord's face much like the one of Horus before the Emporer?

Thanks!

DAMN Verm, just seeing your fisty AC again got me all hot and bothered, but that lord .....

Totally impressive, and with nothing close to critique to throw at you I'll just fawn about some, if you don't mind

How do you get such nice metals? Boltgun with ink over it, then touch ups I suppose? And then whatever the brass is.

Hey Salvage, it's pretty easy. All of the lighter silver pieces are straight GW Mithril Silver with the a heavy Badab Black ink wash over it. All of the metals are the same except I think for copper I used one of the Reaper pro paints (not sure of the exact one as the label is painted over), Tin Bitz, Burnished Gold, and Vallejo Game color Boltgun for the dark silver.

*edit* I think once I have this guy finished I'm going to start on my Slannesh DP.

A smallish update tonight. I finally started sculpting work on my Demon Prince, it's not much but it's a start. I'm not sure if I'm going to use the standard metal torso from the kit, as the model would be quite top heavy due to weight and the pose I'm trying to modify it into. I'm having trouble coming up with a sort of support for the propelling left foot. I've figured I could just use a spare skull I have under the foot being crushed. How does the angle of the toe portion of the foot look though? does it need to be projected upwards and in as it would be flexing? Also, what are your thoughts on the sculpting of the back of the knee? Any critiques would be very helpful!

I might use the new Chaos Spawn torso as a replacement and just sculpt detail into that. I am going to go with a Slannesh/Tzeentch sorcerer DP with wings.

The next is a little update to the rest of my rubric marine squad for the Claws. It's not much, but all I have to do is get their trim and belt packs/accessories painted up.

Ack sorry for the lack of a reply Onno, I figured this thread of mine was lost in the warp.

Thank you Arran, I'm trying to get some more finished to add to my collection of painted minis.

A little update before I have to pack for my departure tomorrow.

This is the mini I would have submitted for the last Dakka Painting competition.

I wasn't sure what to do with his base so I just nabbed one from an old BT marshal I was going to finish. It is a bit shiny because I used a spray fixative instead of a matte varnish, hoping it would turn out matte colored, but it didn't.

anyways here is the Tallarn Lieutenant I did.

It's been a while since an actual update to any of my stuff but I am slowly forcing myself to progress.

First up is the Terminator Lord with Lightning Claws for my CSM army, Claws of Lorek. It was also my first attempt at LSS (Light Source Shading), and there can be some massive improvements, but overall I think it's a pretty nice job. I think I should have gone for more of a chaos powered look on the actualy claw portion of the LC, but I'll just do that for the rest of the terminator squad. he's pretty much done just for a few little details.

I started a Sorcerer. I remember seeing a post somewhere, I think in the P&M forum where a poster used Lucius' the Eternal for a Sorc conversion, but I couldn't locate that post at all. so if you know who you are, credit goes to you.

I would rather use a different backpack, but I've been trying running him with wings, and I might end up just adding those or even magnetizing them. I'd like to add a bit more detail tot he force staff, and power cabling as well. Still unsure though about the wings.

These are the most complete members I have of the rubric squad. Just a couple details to finish up and they're ready for matting. I also tried to do the LSS technique on their eyes. For the ML marine I really didn't think about how obscured his face would be, whoops. Oh well, I might go in and touch up the area around the face on the weapon sight and hands to give off that glowing effect.

As always, let me know what you like, don't like and/or can improve on.
