Fierce Foe-Render

I played a 7700 point Apoc Game last night with 6 friends. My team consisted of Dark Angels (Fallen), Thousand Sons, Dark Eldar, and Traitor Guard vs. a khorne Tank company???, Orks, and Traitor Iron Hands chapter (Chaos).
One right board (number2 ) The Khorne Land Raiders (5 in all, also had a baneblade) came on in a flank march behind some trees and rubble. I dropped 3 drop pods with 2x10 man meltagun squads and a Hellfire Dred to block the two routes out of this mess. I also brought in a crusader and a Multi-melta Speeder. After one turn of fire, 2 Landraiders were gone, one immobilised with no line of sight, and the other was stunned.
On the left (board 1), a Green tide came in behind our Guard and wiped 3 squads out. he was spread way out due to mass numbers and terrain. On turn two, I brought in Azrael, Ezekiel, Interrogator Chaplain and 5 termies (2 LC, 1 TH, 1 PF/SB, 1 AssCan/PF) and I swept into the left flank of the mob. By the end of Turn 6, only 16 boyz were left with a warboss. Azrael took 2 wounds, Ezekiel took 0, and The Chaplain took 2 after 10 close combat rounds. My opponent was ticked. My allies took out 7 orks (5 by Dark Eldar and 2 by Thousand Sons), my termies took out 6 in the first two rounds before they were all dead to failed armour saves. I averaged 7 dead Orks a player turn with my characters. The highest was 11 (Azrael 5, Ezekiel 4, and Chappy 2) and the lowest was 3 on one turn.

I played 18000 versus my mate last month, and it was incredible. The best moment was when I summoned daemons from the warp rift. He had tried to move troops onto it in order to kill them all due to not being able to be placed, but my scatters were all perfect, and they were all but 4 allowed to come onto the board. He was about to give up!

3 Kharns rush out of a land raider first turn and assault a baneblade. 18 gorechild attaks later and the tank goes critical, wipping out 4 (of 8) eversors hiding behind it. The Kharns remain unscathed, though eat a variety of SoB weaponry and eversors in the following turn. They are only partially revenged by their 5 brothers, who were gunning to take down a warlord in assault but it had to go home early ... - Salvage

Dropping well over 500 points worth of spore mines (42 small ones and 5 large - although two of the larger stayed in the air for the flyers) in one turn on a game that was probably 15k per side. It did not take as long as I would have thought to resolve, but blew so many holes in people's lines that it was a work of art.
afterwards the resulting target priority and barrage rolls made it even that much more satisfaying.
wonderful that t7 carnifex is actually immune to the str3 bioacid too.
(although in the luck13s I had a single volley from 3 biovores kill 14 Tau - that was nice too)

We have been playing a lot of Apocalypse at the LGS, and have had many great moments. Probably the best one was when I tossed a vortex grenade on a biotitan to take knock the last 6 wounds off of it, then marched a scratch built hive tyrant special character into the vortex with the lash of slaanesh... best string of expletives I've heard in a long time.

A few spring to mind.
Having my Inquisitor Lord with the Blade of Phaedron face down a massive Daemon Prince (using the Balrog model) in close combat. The whole plot for the game centred around the Inquisitor coming to stop the Daemon Prince, so them meeting one another was great fun.
The Inquisitor died, of course, but did cause a wound first!
The other was rushing forward with 6 Chimeras loaded with Inquisitorial Storm Troopers, unloading with their guns, and then rushing into combat. This, again, failed miserably, but it was awesome fun! I did manage to have one squad, led by a Commissar, run their way through two full squads of Emperor's Children before they got flamed by a Defiler.
Another is something that happens quite often - it's when I get to unleash my full arty company - 4 Basilisks, 3 Manticores, 2 Griffons and a Bombard.
The carnage is spectacular!

My Warhound spending the entire game being continually swamped in Genestealers, but it manged to keep on stomping, going four turns, before Ravenors and Warriors were brought into the fray, and finally being brought low.
Also, same game when the 'nid player did the mandatory consolidate, and moved all of his squads in _front_ of the Warhound. One Vulcan mega-bolter and rapidfired Plasma blastgun (it involved essentially dropping plasma templates on the Warhound's own toes, but scatter was small enough that it only took half strength hits from its own attacks) later, and nearly the entire assaulting swarm was dead. At least until the turn 3 reserves showed up and immobilized it.

Probably my best moment was Cannoness Chamomile the Mild droping a baneblade with one shot from her inferno pistol. The resulting apocalyptic explosion (oh yea!) wiped out a mess of terrain, my entire Repentia squad and blew the weapons off a few enemy tanks. Chamomile made her invulnerable save, slowly looked around the massive (19" or so) crater she was now standing in, looked at her pistol, and then was prompty vaporized by the Mega Gargant slightly to her right.

In a 6k battle the center of the Necron line was anchored by the Nightbringer and his bff, the Deceiver. In a display of tactical idiocy never to be equaled our foes drove their grey knights + grey knight terminators right up to the Star Gods.
Team Necron starts up our celebratory dance, and the enemy starts their shooting phase. They manage to inflict 10 wounds on the pair of C'tan...so we've got 10 4+ invul saves to make. We failed all 10. So, both C'tan dropped dead. Their explosions mangled a pair of Immortal units and the whole center collapsed. Worst first turn ever.
Another amusing occurrence in this battle was the Green Tide formation suddenly hopping out of reserve and charging a 5 man devastator squad in a building...we calculated them as swinging something like 300 times.
|
All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

12000 pt game, 4e:
Knowing I had an Endless Swarm of 'nids, my opponents bid poorly for deployment expecting to get first turn and choose sides. My partner and I had bid one single minute. We promptly strung Carnifexes along the deployment line and chose the side the Marines wanted. Hoping to eliminate the Carnies quickly, they deployed EVERYTHING, packing themselves into a corner. Turn two, we Flank Marched 150 odd gaunts and hormagaunts with 40 stealers. For four whole turns Broodlord Bob and retinue fought to the death with Shrike's Wing (which he expected to be his end-all unit). By Turn Six, all but the most unfortunate were one with the Hive Mind, praise be Her name.

And this is why we banned Flank March. Anyone using it (and an assaulty army) can make a mockery of the deployment rules by just planning to deploy nothing, bidding a minute, and then getting the jump on the enemy.

There's a reason there was always some one on either side that brought nothing but cheap infantry and lined the board edges of their deployment zones every game. We decided it was easier just to ban taking it(you could still have it by being granted it by a formation, but was on our "Not Allowed" list with Jammers and that online Chaos Formation where every Character counts as a Disruptor Beacon) than having one player spend points to basically not play the game.
