One of the guys I play with (who also happens to work for me, lol) has a custom chapter based off of the Black Templar. I don't remember the name but he said that in his fluff for them they were no longer accepted by the Templars because they would ally with armies that the chapter disapproved of (eldar, tau, ect.) under the condition that it was to fight against some greater evil like chaos.

A few of them.

First startet a custom (DIY) chapter 1998.Used nato-colors (mid-europe scheme) for them.
Build up to a little more than Battle-company size.
My Second was a newfound chapter from traits (2004).Used white, purple and grey for them.
Build about 1500 pts.
Everything else I have at SM is from first-founding legions and their respective lists.

The Branded

My chapter is called The Branded. It is a rather small chapter at that, probably about the size of two or so companies, and each sect of the chapter is devised based on the individual marine. To name a few, there are The Neglected, The Fugitives, The Judged, and The Penitent, and they basically represent the Tactical squads, the Assault squads, the Devastator squads, and the Command squads, respectively. The background is still rough around the edges, but I am just itching to get the chapter started (once I finish my current endeavors, of course).

Each marine bears a brand somewhere on his body, and the location of the brand is more or less unanimous amongst the sects.

As I said before, it's a very rough concept... I'm excited to get it going though.

Catch me if you can.

I used to have a diy chapter.

They where the Purple Dragons Chapter .The Right side of the armour was purple and the left yellow withg the helmet opposite. Weapons where red or black.

++Background++

They come from the black temps. and i usued there codex. they are fleet based to, they have 3 companies consisting of 100 brothers. With extra personel and vehicle, scouts etc.

I sadly stopped playing this army when someone destroyed my chapter master.

Though i am playing Blood Ravens now which have a little background but can b classed as semi DIY as there is a lot of mystery about them.

I'm making a chapter once the new codex comes out. I'm calling them the Holy Purgers.

They're a fanatical chapter organized similarly to an order of Medieval Christian monks. They're lead by an abbot (Counts as a Chaplain), and each company is lead by a lesser abbot.
They recruit large numbers from the masses of pilgrims that travel to their homeworld of Cethos in the Ultima Segmentum, then use them as fodder in large engagements (I'll represent this in Apocalypse with IG conscripts). The survivors are then further whittled down through trials to test their faith and physical prowness. Of the pilgrim masses, most are ill, weak, or old. The few strong faithful are taken for consideration. The trials harsh and the recruits must test their faith as shields for the Marines in large battles where the recruits are deployed before they move onto demanding trials of character and strength. Some batches of recruits are wiped out entirely. For this reason, the Holy Purgers are only able to maintain three companies of Space Marines.
The Holy Purgers choose to wear golden yellow armor with white shoulder pads and silver detailing. Some however find this open display of opulence and finery haughty and maybe blasphemous, possibly heretical. This sect of the Holy Purgers choose instead to wear sackcloth and thick earth tone robes over their bright, shiny armor. This most fanactical group makes up the first company.
The Chapter expects absolute loyalty from all Imperial subjects encountered. Even the slightest slip against Imperial doctrine in their eyes warrants death. They commonly wage war against Inquisitors branded Radical. They have no tolerance for any form of psychic powers, outside of astropaths and navigators, as the Holy Purgers recognize them as a necessary evil.

right behind you...

Scorpion Knights
dark green with blue shoulder pads, tops of backpacs, and kneepads; then white trim (or silver, the more important/high ranking the marine, the more the white is replaced by silver) and finally there is black etching along the divets on the armour, and on the whole bottom half of the helm.

Once my fluff is matured to that point, they will be a legion of approx. 6000, organized into 10 Commands of 600 or so Marines. The First Command are the elites, Second are the "Marked" this is assumed to be the direct result of being trapped inside a warp "bubble" along the Eye of Terror (the same reason there are 6000 marines and no pissed off inquisitors after them, they defend the whole Scorpinox system from a constant stream of CSM, Daemons, DE, and crons (yea, there is a tomb world slowly waking up, it is the outermost planet in the Scorpinox system) the mark makes them extremely close to a berserker, in that they relish in clse combat, so much so that they have adapted their armour to have a fore-arm mounted blade housing that can deploy an oversized combat knife for use in cc. The The 3rd Command is focused towards use of vehicles, and specially trains its members to fight from their specially adapted Scarab Heavy Troop Transports (I will convert one of these in the future). 4th command is assault (drop pod and jump pack) based, as opposed to the death watch style second command, this command is not veiwed as expendable, which the second is (veiwed as expendalbe). the 5th through 9th commands are all standard in organization and layout. the 10 is the ctraining command.

... damn, now I wanna work on my fluff more

Beast of Nurgle

God's own city of Glasgow

(I realise that this post has been about loyalist *spits* chapters, but hope you don't mind me posting mine - they once were loyalists before being freed from slavery to the Corpse God. All Hail Papa Nurgle )

The Brotherhood of the Fly represents that which the Inquisition find most abhorrent and most terrifying – Adeptus Astartes who have turned from the Emperor’s Grace to the worship of the Dark Powers of Chaos.

As loyalists, the Brotherhood was known as the Helix Marines, a Chapter famous for its skills in the healing arts. The Chapter had produced more Apothecary recruits than any other and was at the forefront of designing cures and treatments to be used by the populace of the Imperium.

Despite their skill, the Helix Marines were never given the accolades they deserved. Brother Marines viewed their focus on the arts of healing with disgust, with some Chapters, such as the Black Templars, going as far as to ridicule them and consign them to rearguard duties (most notably with Castellan Rodrigues during the Corall crusade). At the same time, members of the Inquisition were suspicious of their openness to ‘science’, which they viewed as little more than trafficking with daemons. Coupled with the Chapter’s notable lack of regard for the Imperial Cult, the conditions were ripe for its enemies to move against it.

The High Command of the Helix Marines was summoned, under threat of force, to meet with the Inquisition. Inquisitor Gryn, a long time critic of the Chapter, had finally marshalled enough support to be able to organise the subjugation of the Helix Marines, having enlisted the support of another old foe, Castellan Rodrigues. Upon arrival, they were arrested and charged with heresy, excommunicate in the eyes of the Imperial authorities. All of the High Command was sentenced to death, whilst efforts were made to hunt down the remainder of the Chapter.

One small force, under the command of Brother-Surgeon Allix Tollan, was engaged in an operation in the Hyrid system. What happened there is not known, but it is believed that whilst working with a highly contagious virus, Tollan and his brother Marines were infected. Whilst the Imperial Guard troops fighting in the war died in their droves, the Helix Marines were unaffected, the virus increasing their skills and endurance beyond its already superhuman levels. The resentments which the Marines had been feeling towards the Imperium during its long persecution of them erupted, as they witnessed the weakness of those who would dare to mock them. Marines who had spent their years of service creating vaccines and cures gave into the anger within them, revelling in the deaths of the pitiful humans of the Guard. Events reached a crescendo when the leaders of the uprising, who turned out to be Plague Marines of Nurgle, teleported into the centre of the main Imperial Outpost. Falling to one knee, the leader of the Plague Marines, Lloigor the Blighted, offered his blade to Tollan as a sign of fealty, having recognised him as truly blessed by Grandfather Nurgle.

Tollan and his brother Marines had never experienced the sort of awe and respect which the Plague Marines were showing them, and it swayed their last reserves of loyalty to an Imperium which had given them nothing. As they battled with thoughts of apostasy, word reached them of the betrayal of Gryn and the sentencing of the High Command. Bellowing in rage and despair, Tollan took up the blade, and declared that the Helix Marines were dead – in their place arose the Brotherhood of the Fly.

Gathering his forces, Tollan led them in a surprise attack against the Inquisition fortress on Thyphinx. Catching them unawares, the Brotherhood smashed through the Storm troopers guarding the fortress, slaughtering them with blade and bullet and disease. Tollan was the most talented Apothecary his Chapter had ever produced, and had always been fascinated with viruses and plagues. In his new form, he proved to be able to shape viruses at will, producing super weapons able to slaughter his foes. He utilised this skill to create a plague which he released against the Black Templars guarding the Inner Sanctum of the fortress. Space Marines were used to being immune to infection, their superhuman constitutions resisting any disease they encountered. However, Tollan’s creation overwhelmed the Templars, their bodies wracked with disease as they died excruciating deaths. Most satisfying for Tollan was the death of Castellan Rodrigues, his fanatical faith shown clearly for the foolishness it was. Rodrigues died in pain and despair, his faith of no use to him as the virus ate through his body. The despair was delicious for the Brotherhood, a worthy offering to Nurgle.

Entering the Inner Sanctum, Tollan found that he was too late. Inquisitor Gryn had gone through with the execution of the Helix Marines’ High Command, and had left their bodies as a grim welcome for Tollan and his men. Meanwhile, Gryn was trying to make his way to his shuttle in order to escape their retribution.

His escape was not to be. Tollan caught up with him, a bolter round smashing through the Inquisitor’s knee as he tried to reach the shuttle, his retinue being slaughtered around him. Gryn waited for the killing blow, but it didn’t come. Hoisting him up, Tollan explained that his end would not be so easy. Rather, his very consciousness would be trapped in a virus which Tollan would create. He would be aware as this virus swept through Imperial worlds, killing all who came into contact with it. His final release would only come after the death of billions.

The release of the Gryn virus devastated four Imperial systems, killing tens of billions before it ran its course. The ingenious nature of the virus firmly established Nurgle’s patronage of the Brotherhood, and he rewarded Tollan with Daemonhood. Casting off his former name, Tollan was reborn as Excretos Bile, Daemon Prince of Nurgle. He continues to lead the Brotherhood of the Fly as they spread pestilence and death throughout Imperial space. The Marines who had escaped the elimination of their Chapter settled a new base of operations in the Margra System on the edge of Imperial space. There, the Brotherhood creates new diseases, ready for release into the population of the Imperium of Man.

I've got a fictional Chapter (which is actually mentioned in fluff somewhere) called the Galaxy Leigon. As with Burning Star IV's The Branded, they're quite small, with three Companies. The three masters are Aeries, Master of the Watch, Kallien, Master of the Fleet and Verexus, Chapter Master. I'm currently constructing the 3rd Company, commanded by Kallien. Aeries' Company is the Veteran Company. The Galaxy Leigon's organisation is rather different, each Company having two Terminator squads, two Devastator squads, two Assault Marine squads and four Tactical squads. Thier gene-seed is highly psychic, and so they have many Librarians. Each Company Captain is a Librarian, and occasionally Librarians will take to battle with a dedicated squad under thier command. These squads are known as the Star Guard (I use a Librarian Command Squad to represent them).
They have Stellar Knights as Chaplains. These take thier usual duties, as well as maintaining the Galaxy Leigon's Fortress-monastry, which is a huge ship by the name of the Emperor's Herald. Thier home world of Osiris XIV was destroyed in a Chaos orbital bombardment.
Thier colour scheme is midnight blue all over, with the squad Sergeants having white helmets. Chaplains are painted Midnight Blue also, but with silver/white specks all over, like stars.
I can't get pictures right now because my camera's in repair, but I can get you a virtual representation.
Hope you like!

I've got the Kriegmarines, who are mostly black with white shoulders and knees and company-specific shoulder trim, in my case red and with the new additions yellow. I'd post a picture, but they aren't appreciated round these parts, as their theme is essentially WW2 Panzer Division. They are a mechanized army, with every unit in a Razorback, and they are all very heavily converted, down to the last infantryman. Their fluff is that they come from the planet Krieg, where the Death Korp recruit from, but have a different historical record regarding how their planet because a radioactive crapsack. They've been on a five hundred year long crusade to restore their world's honour, to reveal the true perpetrators (the Mechanicus) and in the very long term, restore the Space Marines to legion status.

Mine is the Das Imperium chapter. The terminator armour is black and the armour of the chaplains is liche purple, everyone else has ultramarines blue armour.
The rims of the shoulder pads are used to display branch of service, each service having a different colour.

Red - chapter command and tech marines
Enchanted blue - Librarians
Liche purple - chaplains
very light blue - apothecaries
White - ground troops (tactical and devastators)
Golden yellow - airborne fast attack (assault and speeder crews)
Tin Bitz - ground fast attack (bikes)
Pink - tank crews
light blue - tansport crews
light green - scouts
codex grey - reserves (all full marines attached to the 10th company)

Fluffwise I've assumed that the Mortifactors are a second founding chapter being founded sometime in 014/M31. Angered at being forced out of the Legion, Captain Vextus sets about putting his own stamp on his new chapter including adding the barbarous rites of the natives of Posul to the chapter's culture, including taking the Posul name of Tezuka.
It's too much for many of the marines who still considered themselves Ultramarines for the most part and a tear develops within the new chapter. Tezuka embarks on a programme of creating as many marines as possible to tip the balance of opinion in his favour regarding the new customs. The chapter quickly becomes bloated and the Lords of Terra and also Guilliman get involved.
Eventually the malcontents are exiled from the chapter, but there are enough of them to form their own chapter which they do with the personal blessing of their primarch. It is from this short time of being associated with the Mortifactors that the black terminator suits occur, though the Das Imperium ones are solid black with no bone.
The fluff I've got is more detailed than what's above but I'm still working on it.
Technically they are a third founding chapter though obviously they're almost as old as the second founding ones.

So I have a question along these lines. From everyone's experience, when it comes to Space Marine armies, what is the percentage breakdown between the following:
UltraMarines
Other codex'ed chapters like Black templars
Other existing chapters like Raven guard
Custom chapters?
I just started playing and am trying to decide whether to go with the ultramarines or create my own custom chapter.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The only benefit of choosing ultramarines is the special characters. The downside is being yet another player of the army that everyone else is getting tired of hearing about.

My chapter is a sucessor of the Imperial Fists, called the Face Punchers. They make extensive use of power fists, and also plasma weapons and jump packs because they are cool and manly.

My Chapter is called the Night Eaters. They were cut off from the Imperium for 300 years and recently recontacted.

They have a more blase attitude to using xeno tech than is normally permitted (there's is a mineral poor world and they had to use what was left on the battlefield.

They are also barbaric, decorating themselves in furs and skulls.

They have an cult within them called the Astra Imperia which came from a movement that looked forward to the return of the Imperium.

With the Recontact, the Cult mostly faded away, its job complete. However, some of the Cult believe that the Emperor himself was meant to come to their planet. This being not possible (or very unlikely!) they continue to exist.

The Chapter is meant to be on a knife edge of going over to Chaos as it feels resentful that it has been criticised for using xeno weaponry, the existence of the cult and the over watchful eyes of Imperial Inquisitors checking for taint.

My second 40k army was DIY marines called the 'Hawks of Carillon'

They were dark green with grey cuisses (thigh armour) and arms (although the shoulder pauldrons were dark green, too). Vets had grey helmets. Chapter badge was a white wing.

The idea for them was that they came from a forest world which worshipped bird spirits and told legends about 'iron birds'. The world was an ancient human colony cut off for thousands of years and was recontacted when Raptor marines fought off a tau incursion with help from the natives.

Because of their legends, any affinity for jump packs or piloting Land Speeders and Thunderhawks is highly prized (plus the fact that their homeworld has very few areas where they can train with ground vehicles due to vegetation).
As such they have very few tanks or transports and are mainly footsloggers backed up by the elite 'flight' units.

It was a nice armour before I had to flog it to pay the bills.

Ho-hum. With the new codex I'm thinking about starting agin with marines. Although I'll probably go for an existing chapter. The one I like the look of at the moment is 'Dark Sons' - a quartered green and white scheme from the list at the back of the 'how to paint space marines' book.

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Have you thought about the Axis of Evil pension scheme?

Columbus, Oh

I have a DIY adapted Marine force I am calling the Omega Corps..

Colors are black armour with purple shoulderpads and highlighting in certain areas..

This is a fluffy army, but NOT within the 40k canon.. my take on it comes out of the Phule's Company books by Robert Asprin.. whose colors are black with purple trim.

See, the way I wanted it was like this.. every so often you get a Marine who is an "outside the box" thinker.. and while Marines value initiative, radicals are not too well tolerated. Or.. you have the Marine who bobbled the grenade, and blew up something accidentally, or dropped the flamer canister and cooked the Captain's dog or something..

SO, these "poor performers" get shuffled off to a chapter designed to take goof-ups and "rehabilitate" them back into the Marine Mindset, but these guys just really shine with the rest of the misfits..

so.. we have a group of Marines who totally justify my dice rolling skills..

thats my story, and I am sticking to it..

Adolescent Youth on Ultramar

Louisiana

I've started on one with an idea I got from the new SM Codex. I was partial to a black and gold or black and silver paint scheme and this one fell into it...

The Black Consuls, secondary founding chapter of the Ultramarines. The BCs are listed as being wiped out at the Siege of Goddeth Hive, but "Current Status Unknown." I have made up the Third Company, that didn't make it to the fight due to transport problems.

Due to the rest of the unit being wiped out, the Third Company has become the First by virtue of being the ONLY remaining company. Rebuilding has been in process for a while and unit is unp to say 65-80% strength. That will fall nicely into my being a newbie and not having a big force anyway.

I am looking at using a far out planet of Ultramar (since the BCs are a secondary from them), but am still looking at names (maybe Espandor).

Or would it be better to just make up a brand new one and say it it an offshoot of the BCs? Or how do i do this and be "legal"?

Comments, suggestions, ideas?

wait wait wait wait... huh..?

The Angles Malignant are a penitent chapter, who believe that only by understanding, and subsequently destroying, the enemies of the emperor, can they understand , and subsequently destroy their inner demons.

This philosophy was gained on the streets of Plathrias, their Former home world. At that time they were a new chapter, Their first company only 50 years old, when the hives were attacked. Darkness covered their home, and for days flares of drop pods fell from the sky, as the night lords fell upon them. The first weeks were a massacre, the local PDF forces were savaged by heresy, desertion, and the unrelenting guerrilla raids by the night lords. after several months of brutal fighting, even the Fortress Monastery, still under construction, was burning. But the Angels malignant did not tire, their senses became keener, and they learned how to infiltrate deep into enemy positions, their bright armor doing nothing to hinder them. They learned to move with speed through the crowded hives, leaving behind bikes, which had difficuly maneuvering, and Landspeeders, which could neither climb, nor capture key targets, in favor of jump packs. Using stealth, guerrilla raids, they began to push back their enemies. After 12 long years of hunting, they finally removed the last of the vestiges of chaos from their planet. But the cost was great, their world lay in ruins around them, and trillions were dead. So, to a man, they left Plathrias, taking what was left of the populations in great ships, and began their wandering.

Now, 300 years later, they have regained their full strength, and have earned many laurels. They are able to employ, not only specialist space marine companies, but vast regiments of Imperial guard, who share many of the specialist qualities that the Angles malignant hold so dear. Often, these guard regiments will fight alongside the companies of the space marines, or individual squads will serve alongside their allies, complementing the fury of the Angels Malignant, with the proud guns of the Shadow of Plathrias.

In their battles, Commanders lead from the fore, commanding elite squads of assault marines in order to quickly respond to any situation. In addition, though the Angels malignant do not utilize tanks as much as other armies, (though maybe more than the Blood Ravens) Techmarines also are a common sight amongst the assault marines of the Angels. They attempt to gain first hand knowledge about alien artifices, so that new, more effective weapons may be forged. This has put them at odds with the Adeptus Mechanus on many occasions, but the aid of the Angles Malignant in gaining several precious tech templates has served to somewhat smooth the tension. The Angles' philosophies have also set them at odds with the Ordo herectus, who have tried on many occasions to organize support for their extermination. However, The strong alliances that the Angels' enjoy with both the Ordo Malleus, and the ordo Xenos has served to defeat this threat to their sovereignty. Indeed, The grey knights have a permanent station aboard the Choir of Angels the fortress ship of their chapter, and the Angels also boast a high number of permanently acquisition instructors amongst the Ordo Xenos.

The Angels Malignant are host to a huge variety of specialist, and though they are almost chapters unto themselves, they are able to fight with cohesion, whether the red and gold of the assault marines sect, the red and black of the heavy support sects, or the red and white of the tactical sects, all of the Angels Malignant work towards one goal: the extermination of the corruption in the hearts and minds of men.

I really like the idea, the whole almost destroyed story adds to the coolness factor.

I think that you should say that they live on ships, as that adds to the whole "cast adrift" feel.

I recall reading that chapters get disbanded if they get reduced to three or less companies. Maybe you could put something about how they survived being disbanded such as being a famous second founding chapter, or nobody knew any survivors were left until they started getting to larger numbers etc.
Also second founding chapters were offshoots of the original chapter. The Ultramarines were the largest legion before the heresy and they suffered the least deaths during it. After the heresey they were sent all over the galaxy to keep the peace and protect the Imperium from aliens and the like. Your chapter could be anywhere so you don't have to limit it to Ultramar.
Thinking about it, Ultramar is the Ultramarines domain and even though the Black Consuls are related, I don't think they'd want another chapter in their area.
If you want them to be an offshoot, then say the survivors were disbanded, but they were used as the core of a new chapter and so obviously they brought a lot of the old traditions with them but some of those traditions were replaced as the cultures of the new marines were incorporated into the chapter.
