What was your experience with the opening round of 'Ard boyz? I'll start with me:

I brought a Doublewing DA army with lots of terminators. Not the most competitive army, but it was an army that I thought I least had a chance to win with. The only downside was that I only got to play 2 practice games with them.

My 1st game was against a Space Marine army. I made some minor screw ups and lost a close game 14-8.

My 2nd game was against a Guard army. The mission and deployment really hurt his army and I won 23-0.

My 3rd game was against an annoying Necron army. I played pretty badly, but managed to come out with only a 13-7 loss.

I ended up getting 5th place out of 12 people. Not bad, but I really wanted to make top 3. Top 3 went 'Nids, Orks, and Necrons. Overall I liked the missions and I had a good time. All of my opponents were relatively nice and the store ran a tight schedule.

I also thought the missions were pretty good. I didn't play in the first 'Ard boyz, but I heard those missions were garbage.

So how was your 'Ard boyz and what did you think of the tournament?

Alright I'll Bite,

I Brought a BA army with Dante/Brotha C So lots of CC synergy there.
My first was against an ultramarine army that every squad was in a rhino obviously not the best match up for me but close nonetheless, 14-8 (minor loss)

The next was against Duel lash Chaos (total gayness)
Draw (12-12)

Last was against a Death wing army by the end of turn 4I killed his entire army, 24-0 (massacre)

so at the end of the day i had 44pts and came in 3rd.

Didn't think I was going to make it, made a list and got everything together in an hour.
I brought a Speed Freak-ish ork list, with some trukks and battlewagon, lootas for support, deffkoptas, etc.
First game against Witchhunters- minor win.
Second game against Tau- major win.
Third game against nids- draw.
Ended up 4th by a point. Top and second spot went to Orks, third to Nids. Fifth was nids too.
Sorry, but I can't remember the points right now. Hope everyone else had fun- I had a great time.

I played at Game Empire Pasadena and there were 20 players. I played my Orks.

Round 3 Dark Angels (massacre)

I won the RTT with 62 points.

Minor Victory in the first round against a Dark Angel Hoard army. He had too many separate units to target that I couldn't kill em all to keep him from contesting objectives. Got 2 bonus points.

Tied against Deathwing in the second round. I too terribly under estimated a couple of key distances and was getting charged on turn two, then spent the rest of the game fleeing for my unlife. Thankfully my Scarabs really pulled their weight eating a Pred Annihilator and Land Raider.in back to back turns. Scored another two bonus points.

Massacred a generic Marine army in the third round. Not much over special to mention with this one. Claimed all four bonus points.

I Tied for first overall with 51 points. Guy running it decided to defer me to first place as:
a.) I scored two wins and a tie, where as the other guy had two wins and a loss.
b.) I scored more bonus points than the other guy during the rounds.
c.) The other guy was the guy I myself beat in the first round.
Guy who came in third was the Deathwing player I faced in the second round, with 50 points. This put is Necrons first, Dark Angels second, and Dark Angels third. There was an eight point spread between the top five places.

I'm looking forward to the next round, because despite it's larger nature, and us being one of only two stores in the entire state hosting this, not a single person from out of town showed up, so I only played people I had played before. Looking forward to fighting new opponents in the next round.

Played at Valhallas Game Center here in Colorado. 14 people showed up. Brought with me a dual-lash list (sorcerers), 3x 8 PMs with meltas and rhinos, 3x 8 NMs, sonic blasters and blastmaster and rhinos, 6 oblits, 5 combiplas termies. Took first place overall with 59 points, 2nd and third had 58.

First round pulled a friend of mine with a decent Ork list. Ghazghul and his nob squad sucked up a lot of fire power turn 2, and some rolls went his way that might have turned the game. To be fair, some went my way as well - Zagstruk and 20 Stormboyz scattered 12" into a forest, then rolled a 1,2 for difficult terrain to charge and failed, to be subsequently wiped to a man for no loss. Ended up with a draw, 12-11 his favor, with less than 20 models on the board between us. He did massacre his next two games though and is also going on.

2nd round was against an armored company list. The deployment screwed him, as well as ridiculous cover saves from smoke/terrain on my part for the rhinos. It was over turn two when I blew up 6/7 of his battle tanks; the rest was mop up. He didn't have a fun game, which disappointed me, but I'll take my 24 points.

3rd round was against an Ultramarines list, whose main big thing was two squads of 10 Terminators, dual-asscannon. Closer game than the last, but my superior shooting eventually brought him down. Highlights were 20 wounds from plasma cannons on a termi unit that just deepstruck, and one of my sorcerers force-weaponing his Librarian. Again, tabled, and 24 points for me!

Overall a good time, and some tough games. I don't think the lists I played against were optimized to be as nasty as they could be, by any means, but list optimization is only one part of the equation. Surprisingly, no one played infantry guard, or Nids of any kind, and my friend had the only Ork army; there was also only one tau and one eldar. Most were Marines, a few BA, one DA, and two Necrons.

lots of people showed up to mine, over 20.

I got 3 massacres
1st against dark eldar scenario 1.
4 obj controlled 1 contested by troop MANZ and ghaz

round 2 against necron, scenario 2
won massacre when he phased out in turn 4

round 3 against orks, scenario 3
won massacre because my opponent was DQ'd in the 2nd turn for having 3 HQ choices

I have no idea how that got past the organizer

but by the 3rd game I already had move than a 10 point lead on the guy in 2nd.

in the end 72 points!

2nd place was at 55 - necrons that I beat
3rd place was 51 -mech eldar

not a lot of marines which was surprising.

NaZ

lots of good games, very tough fight with the necrons. ghazghkull pretty much won it for me w hen I was able to charge everything but 2 monoliths on the 2nd turn thanks to full 6" waaaagh moves

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

I played at Gamers Inn in Mesa, AZ. I played my GT list with a lot of grey knights thrown in. The lists I played against were not optimized either.

Game #1 I played against Deathwing/Ravenwing (Massacre)

Game #2 I played against Black Templars (Massacre)

Game #3 I played against Eldar (Minor win). All I needed for the win was a tie, so I played it pretty close to the vest. If I wanted to, I think I could have gotten the massacre.

I ended up winning overall.

First Match: Dark Angels tied.
it seem i had a good match but he made a last assault move and reach one objective to make a draw. it kinda sucks going first in this scenario. playing on a 6x4 table made hard for my units to reach his objectives. i should have ran my termies instead of shooting each turn.

Second Match: Eldar loss
i deployed up to the middle which was bad because he seized initiative and got to shoot me down. really didnt get to do much. he outmaunevered me. my assaults killed but took too long going against his charging harlies. he would kill then i would kill a little. plus i forgot to deep strike my reg termies so that didnt help. they were hiding on another table.

Third Match: Space Marines Win
He had three five man plasma cannon tacs and 3 terminator squad. i assaulted on turn two to kill troops. two of his termies mishap and got accident. so he was bummed and had a bad time comming back. i learned that you can assault vindicators with powerfist sergeant and destroy them. he had two blown up.

out of measly eight people i placed third with a 1-1-1. i was disappointed but ill see how i do in the next round. oh yeah witch hunters won this one. necrons placed second.

I played at Coliseum of Comics in Kissimmee, FL.

Minor win on the first game. Hello to my opponent, know your army and play faster. That way, I could have massacred you in four turns instead of only completing three in 2.5 hours. It wasn't guard vs orks, it was necrons vs jumping flesh tearers. Fun spot of the game, making his deceiver blow up due to multi-combat fearless wounds.

My second game saw me get stuck into an Iayanden tarpit. I hate dire avengers; 5 points for a 5++ for the entire unit in cc? t6 on the wraith guard didn't help. It ended in a draw. If I'd just killed one more unit... That game was also slow.

Third game saw all five turns, sm mech vs my jumpy. Bloodly, bloody bloody. 6 rounds of combat saw his dread stand tall vs my power fist. If I killed that SOB, I'd have had a massacre. But that's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.

Killed 7 out of 10 Wraithguard and Farseer turn 1. Doom/Fortune combo never used against me.

Held three objectives, but 2 Wave Serpents raced in and contested two of my objectives and I couldn't kill them in assault.

Minor Win 16 points

Game 2 vs. Black Legion

-highlights-
In turn 1, he used a Rhino with Searchlight on my Nob bikers. Then utelized lash and with 2 Defiler shots killed the entire squad (650 point unit, but only worth 1 kill point as they were a troop choice)
In turn 2, I kill one Lash Prince w/ Shooting and the 2nd Lash Prince in assault. His army gave up a lot more kill points than mine.

Minor win- 14 points

Game 3 vs. Farsight Enclave Tau
(This was a bit weird as I had 2 wins, but minors and my opponent was 1-1, but had a massacre and a minor loss, so we were about tied for points).

Basically, he got tabled by turn 4.

Massacre-23 points.

As crazy as it was, I tied for 3rd (but I think our judge miscalculated and I actually came in 4th, but I deferred the chance at the semi finals to the other guy).

First place-Mech Sisters
Second place- Mech/Drop Pod Blood Angels
Third place- Dark Eldar, Orks (me, possibly 4th?)

All in all, very good games and I learned just how good Nobz are. Mad Dok w/ Ard Boyz was no slouch either.

I brought 200 Ork models. I took 2nd place with 3 minor victories.

My first match was against a highly mechanized Blood Angels force. I spent most of the game getting unit after unit destroyed by a small group of lightning claw terminators. We also started 30 mins late, but managed to get through 3 turns.

My second match was against Imperial guard. I won deployment and forced his troops into a 6" deployment zone. Snikrot's mob came into that zone in turn 2, and managed to cause enough havoc for me to kill enough to win. It was an extremely difficult match. Through good luck on cover saves, my trusty grots and KFF, I managed to keep any units but Snikrot's from dying.

My third match was against Space Marines. This opponent hadn't had very good luck in the tournament, and was playing for the draw. So I got to storm the castle, a building loaded with 2500 points of marines. Snikrot backfired spectacularly while killing a whirlwind. The resulting explosion knocked out 6 kommandoes.

This was the first time I'd played at such high points levels. I am definitely planning to make some sort of movement tray for my grot skirmish line before I go to the next round. Moving that many models is just too time consuming.

1st Round - Double Lash List (Tie)
2nd Round - Nids (tie)
3rd Round Blood Angels (loss)

My list was:

HQ
Lemartes
Termie Chap

Elite:
10x DC
5x Termies with CCW (3x LC and 2TH)
Ven DC Furioso

Troop:
10 Man Tact, Rhino, Fist, LC, Flamer
10 Man Tact, Rhino, Fist, ML, Flamer
10 Man Assault, Fist, Combat Shield
5 Man Tact, Rhino, Melta, Fist
5 Man Tact, Melta, Pweapon

This was my first tournament with the "dont be nice, do what you can to win" type tournament. I guess I am not cut out for them seeing as how I Allowed the nids some rerolls after he forgot stuff, and the third game the kid hadn't even read 5th edition rules yet, and was using his tech priest as a apothocary and his fist (6 of them) were using base 3 attacks, amongst other things.

Lessons learned:
-I hate dawn of war as blood angels. It is absolutely ridiculous that DC are not an honor guard for a chaplain choice. This forced me to either have a unit that would be just giving up 2 kill points (no chappy) or stick them in a corner with the chappy after the enemy deploys on the other side
-Nids do not like flamers, but you should kill any synapse creatures that are keeping a 32 man hormogaunt squad from bogging down your CC Dread. I got into combat turn 2 and was stuck until end of 5 (we ended there) killing 4-6-4-2-4-3 each time but they are fearless and just stayed there
-Double Lash lists are not hard, but mixed with Noise marines is vicious

How long were your rounds? I guess what I am asking is did you play a horde army and not prepare?

I mean after doing this and other friendly tournaments around my area, that is the complaint I hear the most from horde army players. Do you bring enough bricks of dice for a 30 man mob to charge? I mean if I were to play guard/orks/nids, you bet your bottom I would have 4-5 bricks of dice ready to go, divided out into squad sized piles, removing dice instead of adding them.

Don't assume I was the slow arse. The rounds were 2.5 hours. Game 2 I had to spend at least 30 minutes on pointless rules arguments with my opponent who had neither a rulebook nor a codex for his army. In all games the deployments ate a considerable chunk of the 2.5 hours. Perhaps you were allowed to to deploy with the clock stopped.

Tied for first. 57pts

Game 1: Vs CSM: Major victory
abaddon really riding in a landraider with 4 of his best friends nearly took the draw as I could not slow him down. He finally took a wound from his deamon weapon, popped out of combat with his buddy and got a lash to the face then was PINNED!!!! since his "retinue" was not fearless. Snatched out the win.

Game 2: Vs. Deamons: Massacre
9 lascannons on the bloodthirster, DEAD. turn 2 9 lascannons on the deamon prince DEAD. Meanwhile I was lashing the huge squads of deamonettes back. Took the army appart pretty handily. Was something like 17 kp to 3.

Game 3: Vs. Battlewaggon Spam...
Basically a draw. We had ZERO reason to TRY to destroy each other as we were handily in first. PUt the objectives in the middle of the table and went for them. Anyone not haveing to play against 6+battlewagons really have not seen anything yet. That list has a hard time losing.

In the end, the ork player and myself tied for first with 57pts.

Second went to a Nid army.

It was fun... I think there were about 16 people there. I took my orks and had a pretty competitive list. Hamma 'n Anvil with a dred, 5 kanz, two mobs of 30 boyz as the anvil, and a killkannon BW full of burnas, a Deffrolla BW full of Meganobz and Ghazzie, and two squads of trukkboyz as the anvil, with Deff Koptas outflanking.

First Round I played a plague marine heavy chaos army with three deepstriking units of terminators. Two Daemon princes and a greater daemon... Not much got destroyed, I lost nothing and my opponent lost a squad of raptors, the greater daemon and a daemon prince. He had a deepstrike mishap and i got to make him deep strike his terminators in the far back corner of his deployment zone. There were three objectives in the center, one on my side and one on his side, I swamped the middle and the game ended with me taking three objectives and the middle objective being contested by a squad of his terminators.
Major Victory 17-7

Second round was against my friend who I play against all of the time, but he was using his Tau army which was new and I had never played against before. This was a complete massacre. Ghazzie called his Waaaagh and I got stuck in quick, the meganobz rampaged through firewarriors and crisis suits, took the brunt of his shooting and kept on coming. The deff koptas came in and blew up a hammer head... by the end of the game all he had left was two hammerheads without their railguns, and I had only lost the deff koptas.
Massacre: 23-0

Third round I went in with 40 battle points, and the leader had 44 and nobody else was even close. We played each other in the last round. We were both playing orks and our armies were almost a mirror of each other. I put my anvil in the middle of the table with the hamma to my right figuring the kanz and dred (he had no kanz, but two nobz mobz instead, and an extra giant mob of boyz.) Of course the objectives were on our respective table edges. To start, both of us were unwilling to commit so on turn one nothing of consequence happend. My killa kanz advanced onto the table and ran as far as they could, and all of my big shootas took shots at one of his big squads. He rolled poorly for all of his vision tests so he didn't really shoot anything back. Turn 2 I shot again and waited for my kanz to catch up, advanced my kill kannon wagon and tried to take a shot but came up short. His kommandos came in behind my kill kannon wagon and blew it up, and my other battlewagon got assaulted and blown up by a klaw. The meganobz got dumped out but on the next turn proceded to destroy HIS killkannon wagon on the next turn, while my burna boyz wiped his kommandos and my trukk boyz wiped two of the big ork mobz by themselves on my Ghazzie's WAAAAAGH (rolled excellently). However, the meganobz took a lot of damage from his burna boyz squad, and I lost 5. The remaining five and ghazzie rolled horribly and couldn't finish the burna boyz on his turn, which winded up costing me the game and the tournament. By this time his nobz mob with painboy and his ghazghkull were rampaging through my anvil. I must have done enough unsaved wounds to kill his nobz mob three or four times over but his feel no pain rolls were absolutely ridiculous. To cap it off, on the very last turn his regular warboss rolled 3 out of 3 for his cybork body saves denying me his 3 killpoints. He claimed both objectives and had more killpoints me, which is a massacre (though the battle really was a lot closer than "massacre" sounds). I lost 23-0 and failed to place with my 40 points.

Had it only been a major victory, I would have placed 2nd. Really disappointing, considering how well I played. But I did have a lot of fun and was really satisfied how my games worked out.

Round 1 vs. Abbadabbadon chaos, massacre
Round 2 vs. Battlewagon orks, massacre
Round 3 vs. Dual lash, 2 x 20 PM, 3 x 3 oblit chaos, minor loss

3rd : Zilla nids

Lot of bitching and moaning at this tournament. We had ~20 people and I think three people would say they had a fun time overall. The gap between the fun game and the competitive game seems to be widening.

Took my super-sized Stealer Shock (50 scuttling extended-carapce flesh-hook stealers, 2 stranglerfexes, 2 gunfexes, zoanthropes, walking tyrant /w guard, flyrants). Ended up in a tie for second. First was 4-LRC Black Templars, the other 2nd-tie was Orks. Pics to come.

Game 1 - Orks
Finished the game...although it did end after five. 8 mega-armor nobs + ghazgul are deucedly tough to kill. Had some ridiculously poor rolling throughout (and one turn of really good rolling) but on average, my dice abandoned me. (my genestealers forgot how to roll rends in the latter half of the game, and couldn't fleet to save their lives). Ended up in a tie (which is kind of prophetic, since we both ended up tying for 2nd in the end).

Game 2 - Dark Eldar
Dark Eldar Raider Spam, designed to table opponents. Absolutely filled-out force org chart. And we only got to turn 4. Outflanked with everything I could, and held everything else in reserve. Managed to actually seize the initiative (which prevented him from attempting to block off one of the short edges as he was planning to do). Proceeded to march my big boys on and dominate one short end of the table. When my outflankers arrived, they proceeded to demonstrate several formulas:

#1 - 10 Genestealers > Full-size Reaver Jetbikes squads
#2 - 10 Genestealers > 5-man Wyche squads
#3 - 10 Genestealers < Raiders

4 of five genestealer squads and the spinegaunts outflanked into his elites/fast attacks, and wiped them out over two turns. Almost got one of his HQs as well, but Formula #3 bit me in the ass.

My heavies had knocked down most of the troop raiders and some of the ravagers, and my final genestealer squad came on to support them. Worked the assault movement rules to set up a charge that hit two warrior squads about 6-8" apart with a single squad. Ended up in an argument because the DE player simply could not believe the rules let me do such a thing (despite me running him step-by-step through the rules on how to move into assault.) Anyway, formula #4 - 10 genestealers > warriors.

22 kill points for me, 8 kill points for him.

Game 3 was against dual-lash, 9-oblit noise marine spam. long, grinding game...pretty much no way for me to close the distance quick enough, and my opponent wasn't stupid enough to move towards my side until the genestealers had been wiped out. So he had no way to get scoring units to my objective in time. Had one unit that threatened to get close enough, but zoanthropes spammed warp blasts for three turns to wipe them out on turn 5 (when they were a turn away from my objective.

Had one round of simply miraculous shooting - 6 of 7 blast markers landed on target. Ended up using my opponents scatter die for the rest of the game...and still had scatters do well (after that, started to scatter off target...but consistently rolled 3-5 for scatter distance - before subtracting BS.

Game ended after turn 5, legitimately. He killed all my genestealers, my flyrant, and a gunfex. I killed 3 noise marine squads, 1 oblit squad, and both sorcerers. Minor victory by one kill point.

It wasn't bad at all.

First Game-Minor Victory but with 3 Bonuses (16)
Second Game-Draw plus 1 (Stupid Guard and kill point scenarios)
Third Game-Major Victory w/3 Bonuses

47 points and 4th place with DH, not bad out of 16 people. But i must say that i only lost out on 3 because the guy who got 2nd place was a tank company and pulled a guy first round who didn't hide at least a squad/model to force the draw (they were playing a poorly mech sisters list). Oh well, maybe one of them won't be able to make it to the semi's...hehe

This was the weirdest tournament experience I've ever had. I played at my flgs A street Games here in Idaho Falls.

Game 1: My opponent never showed up (the organizer gave me a minor win)

Game 2: despite screwing up my 1st turn by not bringing on everything and losing an 11 strong wraithguard squad to multiple ordnance shots (also on turn 1) I managed to pull of a tie with an extra point because my opponent didn't have any FA.

Game 3: against space marines. On turn two after I was in position to assault his assault marines with FC (15+ of them) with my banshees and scorpions and blew up his land raider by ramming it with a weaponless wave serpent he conceded. So I filled out my result sheet with my battle point like this: 24? and his like this: 0? I've never had someone concede to me in a tournament before I guess it's good there was no sportsmanship scores

The massacre pushed me over the top because everyone else seemed to be having really close games and I took first. second place was daemons and third was IG.

I brought Deathwing to my Ard boyz

1st - Orcs
2nd - Tyranids
3rd - forgot

Game 1 - Tau
We only get to turn 4 because of slow moves/decisions by my opponent.
I got 3 objects and he had 1, with 1 contested. Major victory for me.

Game 2 - Orcs
We only got 3 turns due to slow moves/decisions by my opponent (see a trend here)
Things are going good and he is losing units, I've lost my speed bump units.
Basically I mess some stuff up on the last turn (3) and he pulls out a major victory.
If this game had went the full 5+ turns it probably would have been a draw.

Game 3 - Tyranids
I just don't have enough firepower to deal with this army and get tabled.

It was a fun time but some people need to learn to play faster. My turns averaged about 5-10 minutes if that. Where my opponents took 20+ minutes and then complained about how we ran out of time.

Also, the tyranid player at the end. (the one with the most models out of the 3 armies I played) we completed the game, all 5 turns.
So it can be done.

My Chaos had a good time-the missions played out much better than I had expected.

Round 1 vs. Space Wolves: Majory victory for me, 18-4 split. An HQ Dreadnaught that would not die despite being whacked by 2 powerfists for several turns denied me the Massacre, but I still ended up with a 2-0 edge in objectives.

Round 2 vs. 13th Company: I tabled his army and lost only 1 troops unit. It ended up being a 24-1 split because I brought no heavy support choices.

Round 3 vs. Khorne Chaos: He conceded at the bottom of turn 4 after I avoided making a mistake that might have let him limit me to a Minor Victory. 24-0 split

End result: 66 points, 1st place. I am sure GW appreciated me using the prize credit to buy some Fantasy product.

Even with no sports in effect, all of my opponents were quite pleasant, so no problems there. The almost complete lack of any need to reference the printed rules between three different opponents, and having two of three games completed in 1.5 hours or less at 2500 points is quite a testament to 5E and the tourney setup.

We had just 10 players at our FLGS in Charlottesville, VA.

I was running AC with Inq/Mystics and Sisters.

Game 1 vs. Ultramarines - Massacre as he didn't have enough AT to stop me. Only lost a Demolisher. 24-0

Game 2 vs. Aspect Eldar - another massacre with no armor losses 20-1....giving him a point as I had no FA choices

Game 3 vs. Nidzilla with a list close to Centurion99's. This was the top game. I got the choice to go first and set up right in the middle to force him to his back line. On turn 1, I drove back 12" to gain some space for shooting. Turn 2 dropped the flyrant and spread some wounds around on the rest of the TMCs. Like a dope...and being the 3rd game I've played... I didn't move any tanks and he was able to assault 2 Russes w/ genestealers and knocked them out. And it all went downhill from there. The game went into Kill Points and he had enough to get a minor victory. 14-7 in favor of him.

#1 Nidzilla with 57 points
#2 AC with 57 points
#3 my AC with 51 points.
