Well basically my Xbox keeps breaking discs, i havent moved the thing since i bought it and it keeps snapping discs, not completely though, its like a tear in between layers of the CD its rather odd, i just wondered if anyone else had experienced it?

thanks Malfred i read that and it said it was the older xboxs i got my current xbox in May 2007 so its not a first gen one (as far as i know anyway)

my xbox so far has claimed:
Pro Evo 6
Pro Evo 2008
Halo 3 Limited Collectors Ed

its rather an odd thing i will try to get pictures but taking a picture of a disc it doesnt show up to well its never odd its like the disc has snapped between layers and it renders the disc completely unusable

yeah,
Back during the initial release I bought a imported Xbox from the EU. the UK had sold out.
Within the first week it had destroyed two discs, circle scratchs.

I called them up and they collected it and replaced both games. No questions.
It took about 2 weeks till I got it back. since then its been as good as gold.

I have two xbox360s. one for home one for work...
the second one has been perfect since I bought it.

You just gotta send it to microsoft. and wait it out...

As an aside note I've recently bought a PS3 and it's been perfect from the start...

yeh, i am going to have to sort it out after Christmas as going home from uni i am really going to need it, after that i will see what Microsoft say,

i agree with you Panic entirely a mate of mine has been through 3 360s and just decided to get a PS3 instead, he's not had a problem with it so far, but that's Sony for you they build decent consoles, my PS2 was bought on the day of release and it still works to this day, if i had the money i would swap back to Sony again, i mean the only game i can't play on a PS3 is Gears of War but one play through and quick blast on Co-Op and i'm bored again so i may have to stay faithful to Sony, Final Fantasy was always better on the playstation anyway..

yeah,
What I was saying is, there are bad units out there, but once you get a good one you'll be Ok. you just have to contact Microsoft and get yours sorted.

I've been playing both those 360s for years now with no issues. So many games and countless hours of gaming.
the one i have at work is always moved in and out of my locker and it takes quite the bashing but has never damaged a disk.

360s are awesome.

Panic...

oh i know they are awesome i love my 360.

Its just with all the scares of RROD etc makes you doubt a lil, still hopefully microsoft will resolve the issue, i said about getting a playstation as i have always had one till the 360 came out, i got most of the decent games i had missed on the original xbox (halo 1 + 2, fable etc) and i love it, i was deciding whether to have both consoles but with both of them not having many exclusive games it seems like a bit of a waste of money, saying that i do want to play MGS4 but the price of the console cannot reflect me buying it solely to play 1 game.

Thanks for the info i was concerned about this as i had never heard of the disc eating fault either until it happened to me.

BTW just as an aside, you have gaming console at work !?!

yeah,
Cool I wish you luck with it!

I'm a shift engineer, during shifts between 6am and midnight I'm on call... lots of down time to paint and game.

OT:
MGS4 is amazing! totally worth making effort to play.
the other three games i've played have been ok.

I prefer the Xbox controller, the joystick is in a much better position and the triggers feel more responsive. nice shape everything about the xbox controller is better...
Classic design is one thing but I think Sony are arrogent in their belief that they nailed comfortable joypad ergonomics on their first run what 12 years ago...

Graphically i don't think there's much in it, but I've heard that games designers have yet to proper learn/push the hardware...

thanks well problem solved whine at microsoft, hopefully they are as useful as GW's mail order (the only GW thing i will not b**** about as lets face it, its pretty good)

in regards to controllers i agree in all aspects, the old playstation controllers have not taken to triggers well sometimes my finger slips of the R2 L2 buttons when i am playing pro evo at my mates house, seriously hampers my ability to play, when i first saw the PS3 i remember them being shown with controllers that looked like a 360 controller it just fits more snugly in your hands

aye MGS4 does seem like the only game so far that has pushed the software even a little, i think if you compare games like Gears to MGS4 it wins hands down, however it doesnt explain the PS3's terrible lack of draw distance on Fallout 3, it was bit disheartening, i suppose you can take into account that it had Xbox and PC design in mind, as Oblivion came out on the PS3 alot later and they didnt really make any improvements to it IIRC

still i'm hoping that Final Fantasy 13 pushes the PS3's hardware abit more than the current stock of games, as SquareEnix always do a decent job in the graphical department, Infinte Undiscovery and Last Remnant do look stunning on the 360 from what i have seen so far

still thanks again guys for the advice on why my xbox hates xbox 360 games!

Here's a reccomendation for 360 care: keep the top covered when you aren't using it to prevent dust from getting in, which could melt the motherboard. Never, ever move the 360 while playing a game. Keep your 360 elevated to air it out and keep it cool. As for broken games, here's a disk repairing thing http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8814526&type=product&id=1206749396320.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

My PS2 has been chock-full of dust since 2002, and still works fine. One second...

...

Yep, just fine.

Motherboards DO NOT melt under the temperatures they are exposed to. It's a figure of speech that people always take too seriously. Heat can cause damage to certain components, but you don't have to worry about anything leaking out onto the floor.

Whats interesting from those links posted by malfred is the class action lawsuit info, is that still going ahead?

Regarding the problem, my original 360 (brought a few months after the release of the machine) damaged three of my games before it suffered the RRD. Oddly I was advised by a Microsoft employee to put it on its side when I mentioned them being damaged while sorting the RRD repair. After the repair from the RRD it stayed on its side and I never had another disc read error until it died this summer with a VGI issue.

I have a new machine now and so far *touches the wood desk* its doing well. Although that might be a side effect of it not being used as a DVD player anymore, I brought a seperate player at the end of last year so the kids DVD's where not constantly being used on the 360.

Are you using your XBOX vertically or horizontally. I had heard rumors that the balancing wasn't entirely correct when using the XBOX vertically and was thus causing scratched discs... I wonder in an extreme case if it would actually break a disc.

As cool as all the faceplates out there are, they all assume your XBOX will sit vertically

Well in my case all the damages occured Vertically, and as I said a microsoft fella advised me to put it on his side. I was also told not to have it near a speaker as the sound waves might cause vibration that might cause damage, especially when vertical.
Oddly on a phonecall later while having my VGI problem about two yrs later, a diff advisor insisted that no microsoft personel would have told me to lay it on its side while I was chatting with him over previous problems with my machine, which I thought was odd.

But aye, I'd be interested to see what the answer of the OP is on that as well.

This is an example of someone breaking the second rule of tech-support professionalism - making an excuse. He was also insulting your ability to recall, by the sound of it!

The other guy you spoke to broke the first rule - don't imply that the product has a design flaw!

The type of crack you're talking about sounds like how my copy of Fable 2 came when it was given to me.

On the inner circle of the disc where the drive spins it there is a crack on the top layer of plastic. The lower half is still in one piece, but the top has split like a cracked nail.

It still works in the drive ok. And I've saved it to the HD so it doesn't need to read it so much. But worrying none the less.

I had that as well several months ago. As cruddy as it is that that happens, I will give Microsoft kudos for telling me it could take 10-12 weeks and returning in just under 4

It was funny when I brought into UPS as the girl at the counter looked at the Microsoft issued box and asked, "That's a 360 isn't it?"

Yeah mines been in Microsofts hands for a week and they said it could take 2 to 3 weeks to get mine fixed and returned, so "fingers crossed" heres hoping it will only take 2 weeks so I can play COD5 if I get it for xmas because to the best of my knowledge Blockbuster doesnt rent out consoles anymore.

I second the point that IN ANY EVENT, DO NOT KNOCK OVER YOUR CONSOLE WHILE THE DISC IS A'SPIN!

You get a skin crawling sound, and a messed up disc. Thank God that trading in Call of Duty 4 has got a good price at CEX...

You traded it in after messing it up?! Naughty

After my Elite went three red lights I had to do the usual send it off to UPS (in a box of my own mind you, they didn't send one).

UPS then promptly lost it and it took 2 months before I got a replacement. Not Microsoft's fault and they were pretty good on the phone, despite the call centre being in another country it was all handled very well.

Ah, the old "Oh yeah, let's ship it to FRANKFURT TO GET IT FIXED." job by Microsoft.

Thankfully, next time mine breaks (and I know it will...), I get Microsoft's bonus 'Sorry' -- something like a year of Live, apparently.

I have mine since february if I'm not mistaken and until now I didn't have any problems besides 2 or 3 crashes.
Mine stands vertical because it looks much better and I need the sheld space for my Wii too.

The only odd thig I usually notice is a rather loud sound while reading the disc, but I think that's the standart. I usually goes away when I install the game on my hard drive.

yeh that very loud sound tendsto happen all the time when putting a disc in, sadly i don't have the new live experience thing, is it possible to install games with the origional xbox dashboard? I doubt it somehow but i was just curious considering the amount of time i imagine i will spend on Fable 2 and Infinite Undiscovery i can imagine it would be easier to install the game onto the hard drive
