I posted this on Boot Camp, and the results surprised me. Now, I'm asking the 40k community of Dakka.

Seems I'm the only vote so far.

I voted middle, mainly because I don't believe they'll screw it up (they have new model kits to sell, after all), but I can't see it being a lightning bolt to the hobby.

It'll just be another run-of-the-mill pendulum swing, but now with added Generic Special Characters.

I say they probably will. They are pretty consistent at it. There will be some horribly overpowering combination that will crush most people, and will be such a no brainer there will be no other Force Types.

My guess is the IG will get more powerful, possibly to the point of being broken.

This will however be only a few power-builds, and a lot of stuff will be left behind.

There will significantly less options than before, and the few options that remain will be tied into special characters that are so good that everyone will take at least one in every army.

I'm hoping for a decently-playable army.

I'm expecting a decent army, some interesting choices, and a balanced 'dex. I'm also expecting to get flamed for thinking that, and to hear endless whining about this 'dex before, during, and after it's release, followed in a few months/years with more whining about needing a new 'dex.

A typical GW release in other words.

It depends who's writing it I suppose. I'll hold my vote for the moment.

If dakka were a pokemon it would use its whiny conjecture attack to lesson the fighting strength of whatever its opponent was.

Guard have a bunch of apocalypse items/deals and a lot of potential models so I'm hoping for something good. Also so I can make my krieg counts-as kroot into a full army because I'm stupid and buy $7 IG models.

So, would it be ironic to vote "GW :rolleyes:" or "YES IT'LL BE AWESOME!" because I'm at a loss.

I said porbably because you know its GW . The IG aren't hurrr.

I just hope its an Army. Not just some tanks and a character but a versatile fun army. Almost wish they'd inject some ork style humor into the Dex. I said, Almost.

Voted middle. They will throw a bone to the tank enthusiasts because they have revealed there will be new tank models/variants. The unknown side of the equation is what will happen to the true core of any IG army ( infantry ). How will they handle Comissars, Psykers, Ogryns, Veterans, Kill Points et etc ?

Id like to see more variety in the IG units. i.e. the mostly need to be at least partially competitive, so we see them. I love the fluff behind ogryns, sanctioned psykers & stormtroopers, but I rarely see them on the table.

Im kind of leaning towards the opinion of orkeosaurus. I think the guard will become competitive but there will only be a couple of competitive builds that we end up seeing all the time.

oh well, I guess only time will tell.

Good to see my cynicism still beats yours HBMC. I voted IG are doomed. The current codex could be easily tweeked to make it the best out there. Instead we will have 1) pablum; 2) non Tier One Pablum. I dare GW to prove me wrong. Please GW prove me wrong.

I'm hoping hat GW proves us all wrong, but my feelings are rather pessimistic considering how, as someone mentioned earlier, Guard are not HURRR. Also, our last two 'dexes have been, IMO, lackluster.

I am holding some optimism, so i voted "probably".

My worries are that kill points will not get resolved and that "basic guard infantry" will be marginalized in favor of flashy units :\

They will be twisted into an entirely new sort of insane mess that will inspire endless wars on Dakka and Warseer.

I bet the first thing commented on will be the codexes format. It will inevitably cause a 20% grade drop in whatever methodology is used to grade the codex.

You speak like there's something wrong with a Wargear section that doesn't contain any rules, just links back to other pages, thereby defeating the purpose of having a wargear section in the first place, or that it's some sort of Codex faux pas to have the rules for a single unit stretched out over 4 unrelated pages in the Codex?

You say can see the future? Man, that type of Codex is the future! Get with the times lest you be left behind with your 'logical page structure'...

Let's hope the comments will be positive because GW went *back* to the 3E format.

Hell, I'd settle for GW to go back to the 2E format.

But most likely GW will push forward with the slowed 5E format that they used in the SM Codex. Holy crap, the 5E SM Codex is laid out so badly, it annoys me just to think about it.

GW has been doing Codices for nearly 20 years now. You'd think they could simply use the format that works, rather than changing things for the sake of changing them...

Well we can all agree, that no matter how it goes, we will have plenty to talk (read: shout) about.

I'm pretty much with HBMC. Take the JJ codex, tweak the points values and options, throw in the requisite special characters and you'll pretty much have it. It'll be fine and completely playable but lacking in the excitement factor.

I went for "it's GW after all". They 'll do a nice enough codex, things start looking nice and when you start to try out lists and fantastic combinations of armies you go all

As much as I hope they don't, the IG army since '98 has almost intentionally been designed to be mediocre. Now that could change, I'd really like it to, the Ork codex fills me with hope. That said the CSM codex does not.

How can they screw the guard? They are pretty bad as it is, my bet is that Guard will get better but will still not be able to compete with top lists.

EDIT: wow, the vote distribution on this poll so far is scary. 1:2:3:2:1 at the moment.

My Vote:

"Probably will. It's Games Workshop."

I figure the new dex will have new toys and units but will not address the 3 biggest issues with IG (and that;s how they will screw IG), no fixes for:

Kill points imbalance
Assault impotency
Mini line incompleteness

I bet it will be all flash and little serious content. GW has no consistent editorial control it would seem for codex paradigm, this will be no different, buckets of different for no practical reasons...

Time will tell.
