OK, who else has seen it? I got hold of it at FLGS last night, pleasantly suprised. A lot of things were not touched much (carnosaur went S7, kroxigors went S6 with the GW, saurus came down in points, saurus cav stayed same price but are 2+ armour save without extra gear, terradons drop rocks), while some things were touched up quite a bit (razordons are cool but not uber, salamanders are great IF you can get them within breath weapon template range, Mazdamundi is a SpChar now and he's a bad bad frog, Kroak used to be 1200-odd points and in now 600 even with different capabilities, Slann now base price 275[???] instead of 400-some). Lots more spchars now, some really good choices from what I can see. Who else has seen it?

Haven't seen it, but I'm excited that terradons get to drop rocks again! Cav might actually be useful now.

Temple guard are ws 4, and become ITP and stubborn if joined by a Slaan.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Good news about the Slann. Mega cost of hypno-toads in the past made it really difficult to include them... which is a shame because Juan Diaz's model is awesome.

I despise this move towards special characters. Rather than make a Bob Dylan reference though, I will remain in my ivory tower and seethe. Seethe!

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

Anyone got any word on the army's magical capacity? Are Slann still fail-proof, and how do skink shamen work out (and no, the answer is not "with really light weights").

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

From what I've seen, skink shaman's are getting a big boost from the engine of the gods. It raises their caster level and allows them to chose from several different bound spells every round.

Slaan are cheaper, but have a variety of powers they can use to be better. You can pick one and get more for 50 points each. They are no longer immune to miscasts.

You can get Kroxy's in skink units, and they fight over the front rank, but its a wretched thing to do, as the enemy will rack up combat res killing the skinks.

Edit: Also, RIP Nike-Saurus. The new Jaguar thingy just casts the shadow charge spell as a bound spell.

The cheese is there. You can get 4 EotG in 2000 points (12 levels) or 3 EotG and a Slann with bodyguard (13 levels and the free power dice for each cast for the Slann).

You've seen the new Steg box? This is what will sell, because that's the cheese

What about regular Skinks? I heard there was an option to take them as ranked units.

Also, Southlands. Gone, I take it? I've got a bunch of models that will be useless if so.

Many fun things in the new list.

You can only get 10 stegadons, darn. Wonder if the 3500pt 'ardboyz will be making a return?

My favorite is the magic item that lets a slann shift his first miscast to an enemy caster. "Oops, I miscast but on a 2+ your wizzie takes the hit."

I'm thinking a Slann with extra dice on each spell, regen, and MR(3) could be popular.

Going to build an army and get a game in with the new list tomorrow.

I'm going to flat out say it: 10 stegs is dumb. Are the special slot stegs appropriately weaker compared to the old rare slot stegs? Or only compared the new uber ancient ones?

Hail Toad. Is it a Codex, or Army Book? So hard to keep up these days . ..... . .

My fault there Le Grog. It is indeed an Army Book. Guess which system I really play? lol.

Toad no longer immune to miscast, but can re-roll on the misacast table or some such. The immunity to miscast has been toned done to a "high-level resistance" to miscast, I just forget the exact mechanic right now.

You ever make it to Houston? Know you were coming our way, but I think Ike derailed your plans. Not trying to be a git, just didn't know if they were rolling all the books into one name across the board. Can't wait to see how the Lizzies impact the '09 tourney circuit with all those fliers. Who will be the first to field an all airborne force? Is that possible in the new book?

I am not sure, but I believe a lizard airforce will still have a required ground component.

I've been to Houston once, after Ike. You're right, he screwed with my sked, but at least I was safe and sound. Never got a chance while there to get out much, we were behind from the storm so it was gonads-to-the-wall. I should be back eventually, but no clue when.

Oh, this sounds right fun. Do I need a FAQ ahead of time, or will the rules be apparent once I see where the punches are flying?

It involves models; painted or not; and fremented malt beverages. Guinness, preferably and intermittant Irish Car Bombs thrown in. Since the Irish Pub I hang out at is just down the road, it's 50/50 whether there will be any gaming going on. Plus the lads at the shop are a good lot, so we'll just take the whole gang down there and talk about gaming.

Blowpipes (skirmishing Skinks) and jav/shield (ranked) only.

Vengis wrote:What about regular Skinks? I heard there was an option to take them as ranked units.

Ranked, can mix with Kroxs, cannot skirmish.

If you want skirmishing you have to buy them as such and there's no option for kroxes for them.

IIRC

Stegadon - S5, T6, A4, Ld6, AS 4+, D6+1 impact hits

Ancient Stegadon - S6, T6 A3, AS 3+, D6+1 impact hits

can't remember howdah options.

Thanks for that HMV, seems to be what I remember seeing before. Bleh.

Also, poisoned steg bolter? *facepalm*

On the toad, I chuckle at the item that allows the toad to transfer one miscast onto an enemy caster on a 2+

The thing that jumped out at me was that Saurus Warriors don't lose an attack for fighting with spears in the second rank. Very nasty. They also went down a point I think.

The thing with all these Stegadons is I think they'll still go down if charged by ranked units from combat res. The only have 4 attacks and with out the impact hits I just can't see the Skinks making up enough wounds.

Skink Skirmishers now come with blowpipes as standard, you can upgrade them to javalins and shields for a point.

Regular Skinks have javalins and shields as standard and rank like normal but may add one Kroxigor for every 8 Skinks in the unit. I didn't see the option for a musican and standard bearer but I could have missed it.
The thing with putting Kroxigors with Skinks is it give the unit alot of punch on the charge and ranks of a smaller point cost.

No Skinks cannot get short bows. And yes the southlands list is dead.

Lord Kroak is indeed only 600 points and a level 4 wizard but he can only cast one spell. The spell has 5 casting levels (with the highest at 20+!!). The higher the level, the longer the range. It does dice of hits to every enemy unit in range, even those in close combat. Or you can use his power dice for the army pool, very cool.

Sacred Spawings are gone.

Terradons can drop rock on units they fly over like the way Screamers attack for I belive D3 S4 hits each but only once a game.

Mazdamundi still rides a Stegadon and has the 'Ruination of Cities' spell now.

Razordons work like Salamanders used to except they have to roll to hit.

Salamanders use the flame template at S4 but the template goes an artilery dice out. You have to roll so you can over/under shoot with it. Each Salamander works out its shot individualy.

I think Slann max out at 425 or 450 + 100 points of magic items, I can't remember.

The Carnosaur is S7 and do D3 wounds to everything. They still go frenzy when they cause a wound and never lose it.

Slann are now only large targets when they are in units.

There is no Slann spell list, they still only use the spells from the rule book and they lose the dispel magic spell.

Skink priest still must use the Heavens lore.

There are some cool new and re-worked magic items, I just can't remember them well enough to put them here. Also sorry for the rambling, thats just how my brain works.

Cheers -K

Though the rules look nice, I can't say the same for the models. The stegadon looks fat, the Terradon like a plucked Turkey, and the Kroxigers glazed. The only new good models they are releaseing are the Plastic temple gaurds.
