I know it's not much of a milestone by the standards around here, but i won't be leaving the 4 digits for a while. Wanted to record some thoughts about the topic.

1. First off, I'm glad I came. Better to have seen it and swam in it myself. Dakka provides a service to the online 40k community.

2. Dakka does NOT "tell it like it is, warts and all." I believe that was a sig I saw, quote attributed to Nyarly (I think). Dakka subjects itself to the same basic rules of behavior that all other forums worth a gak do. It has to, otherwise the forum falls apart in flames. Don't believe me, go check out an unmoderated sports forum. You'll want those minutes back. But I would like to see this "Hardass" attitude change, because that's all I see of it, is attitude. What else I see is the same hand wringing you see other places. Which is not an entirely bad thing; you become enough of a bad boy and you find yourself an outlaw. Not that I am saying dakka should become soft and plushy, by no means. I'm sayign that it's just not near as hard ass as it would have you believe.

3. I enjoy the tailorability of the forum. Ignore gets a somewhat bad rap, (what was it? "Holding ones hands over ones eyes and saying LALALALALA I can't hear you"). I think the LALALA argument has some merit, but only in direct proportion to how seriously you take the forum in the first place. For some of us, it's a cursory experience that benefits from just breezing past ignored user notices. I seriously don't see most of them, someone had to point one out to me. For all of you in my ignore bin, thanks for making idakka a better place by showing your true colors and revealing yourselves to be absolutely of no merit or consequence to me as early on as possible. May you half dozen serve as an example.

4. Information. Dakka seems to be a little behind the times on information. Most of the new information about 40k coming in is from other forums. Little of it seems to originate here. However, it seems to all make its WAY here. That is one of the major uses this site has for me. It does not SEEM to be the font of information that other sites are, but all of it sure accumulates here. For all you dakkaites who brave the warmth of the kiddie pool to bring us back tasty treats (mental image THAT one if you dare!) to sip, thanks.

5. New members: Quit coming in all apologizing and humble. Get in here, and be who you are. Show your steel. places like this breed internet rifraf; it is only by being strong that you can keep the lowly ones in check from themselves. Remember, in this community you have teeth too. Use them if you have to.

6. Cheese. Comes in many flavors, tastes great with chili and makes cornbread go from good to great.

7. Entertainment. I work offshore and use dakka most over a satellite connection. Sometimes we are extremely busy, other times we are so inactive that we become desperate for things to do. You can tell when those times are because my rate of post ing blows through the roof. Like now. Thanks for the information and entertainment dakka.

I guess that about wraps it up. Thanks to the mods who work here. I don't agree with a lot of the things you do, and how things are run; but overall the site runs and operates. Considering it is free to us, that is more than enough. Take care, y'all.

I have learned from Dakka basically all of my tactics and army building strategy. Unfortunately I seem to be stuck in a 3rd edition mindset.

You know, I wasn't aware that we needed to do these Nth post things. I guess I'll do my 5k and we'll see where things go from there... Anyhow, glad to see you hung in there.

2. I think Dakka tells it like it is, but "telling it like it is" doesn't preclude basic decency. The other thing is that the definition of "is" varies by person - my "is" isn't your "is". And the Mods here are generally good at allowing a variety of viewpoints to be expressed, unlike some other forums which shut down viewpoints "just because".

3. I don't think there's any problem with the ignore function at all - I think it's a great tool to reduce unnecessary friction between clashing personalities. Though it amuses me greatly to see the histrionics that certain overly self-important individuals take towards being ignored.

4. Dakka is a fantastic aggregator - BoLS is a fantastic news site.

5. I'd love to see more new blood establish themselves here. Especially if they can help raise the level of civility in this place.

6. I like good cheese for its own sake, but paired nicely or as a featured ingredient, I'm good there, too.

Thanks again!

I've learnt that sometimes you've just got keep ya' God-damned mouth shut. I've also learnt that some people haven't learnt that.

And I've learnt that while it's ok to be a spade*, you can't point out that someone's a spade.

I've also learnt how easy it is to contradict one's self in the space of a single post (check my first line ).

Dakka's never been a news source, we've traditionally been an aggregator. We do encourage people to link to their news sources too, as we like to see people get the credit and traffic they deserve.

Not everyone on here is a hardass. Some of the best players that post here are very polite and typically rather quiet, comparatively. Any Yakface is as tolerant and understanding as they come.

Dakka is definitely growing. I mean, damn.

From Dakka I learned that...

  1. I love painting the figs. If I didn't paint, then I wouldn't be here. And if I was never here, I may have never learned to paint (or at least I would have taken a longer time getting to this point).
  2. Army profiles are great fun to put together.
  3. There are other games beyond 40k. Although eventually I would have learned about them from the Internet or something, for the longest time GW was the only company on my radar.
  4. It's okay to love the models and not care much for the game.
  5. There's more than one type of TFG.

There's probably more, but it's kind of early in the morning.

While my overall post counts is pretty measly, I have been around on Dakka for a long time, and at least 3 different servers.

My thoughts on Dakkadakka are:

For GW gaming, especially 40K, Dakkadakka is the best moderated forum , bar none. (rgmw is the most entertaining forum but it is lawless and unmoderated so the signal-to-noise ratio is poor)

Dakka to me has a bias more towards the tournament style of play, in that many of the posters here are involved in GT's and that the site as a whole seems to have a synergy with Adepticon, as best illustrated by Dakka's head honcho, the elusive yakface being the compiler of the INAT FAQ (Or the DakkFaqqa as I like to call it). I like this bias, as it means that most of the things suggested in Tactics & Army List forums have been tried and tested at what is currently the highest competitive level of the hobby. I'm more of a casual gamer myself, but I like to glean insight from those wiht more experience than I. It's also made the various tournaments sound like a lot of fun to attend, and if my finances and family allow, I'll be making the road trip to adepticon 2010 at the very least.

This bias towards tournament gamers means that the YMDC forum, as well as being bloody contentious, usually is able t come to a consensus that makes sense, and gives me an idea on what to expect in pick-up games when weird issues arise (something again aided by the INAT FAQ)

As others have said, Dakka is more of an aggregator for news & rumors than a news site, but I like having all my info in one place. Plus if I want to, everything links to Warseer or BOLS where needed.

As a painter & modeller, I suck out loud, but I enjoy seeing what people come up with in the P&M Blog section and every once in a while there's a technique I can swipe and manage not to screw up.

The biggest negative of Dakka for me is that it introduced me to Warmachine & FoW, so my wallet hates me more than it ever did before.

Just. fething. Barely.

Seriously, I've enjoyed some of your posting CG. I remember thinking some of it was a waste of my time as well, but that's to be expected. Don't worry, if and when you or anyone else "crosses the line", you will be deleted from my idakka. One song gone, many more to choose from to keep the music truckin on.
