What kind of music is normally played at your local GW store?
for mine it's movie soundtracks and seasonal music.

Dunno, aint been there for a long while.
I remember back in the nineties when I got into the hobby they had only one tape and they played it over and over again every day. I hold them personally responsible for my useless ability to remember duran duran's 'hungry like the wolf' of by heart.

80's Metal.
Ugh...
Though the teams that paint at Tabletop Game and Hobby are pretty open with what you pop in the CD player, Iron Maiden is pretty much the default music for my FLGS. While I respect 80's metal, it's nothing I would really choose to listen to. So I always bring in some of my own music, and so far they've never had a problem listening to it. They enjoy it, actually. And that's always a good thing.

Personally I find music (especially loud music) while gaming to be a distraction. Why do some folks (admittedly mostly the kiddies) just have to have their flavor of music playing 24/7? Do their lives need a soundtrack or something?

Fair enough. But that's not exactly what I meant.
Let me give you an example I talked about on Portent a while back.
Back at the Dalcon game convention circa 1993 or so I played in a big multi-player 40k game. I (and to be fair most of the other players) were quite annoyed when two of the younger players (about 14 or so I would guess) produced a portable CD player and started playing some rather annoying music, I no longer remember the genre, at a pretty high volume. The kiddies in question just didn't understand why the other players called the convention staff and forced them to turn their music off. That's the sort of "have to have my music all the time" behavior I'm talking about.
Hell, I've seen some kiddies playing airsoft with their Ipods plugged into their heads! Why on earth would you want to hamper your situational awareness in a combat simulation game by restricting your hearing like that is beyond me.
Or am I just being an cranky old man here?

imo, i find it impolite when im playing with a person and he/she has earphones on. i mean, its a communication game, and if i have to repeat 2 or 3 times that im assaulting something, it gets kinda annoying.

Heavy metal. Mostly the Nordic style stuff (we had lordi for a while), some british stuff (firestarter and something which I would assume to be called cherry cola are the two things that spring to mind)
Once they went and put on ride of the valkyries for an apocalypse game. Mostly it's just background noise, and it's alright.

I remember back in about 1992 when GW was trying to shift its customer base, GW Maidstone was banned from playing anything remotely metal. Ironically, this prevented them from playing anything from GW's own record label. Anyone remember any of the old GW label music? I remember one album was even reasonably listenable!!

Several years ago when I used to goto the store a lot they would play some good techno/electronica (stuff like Crystal Method, Prodigy, etc) and that stuck with me. Now they play less good music, IMO. At least it's not gangster rap...

I hate the GW closest to me. It's so tightly squeezed and if I ever go in there I'm usually shopping with my women friends/girlfriend/sister and it's just awkward to walk into that store. It's crowded because it's small, the staff is trying to aggressively sell me crap I don't want, and all the dudes bum rush my women folk.
I try to avoid it, so I only have a small sampling of about 15 to 30 minutes twice a month. But I've never heard anything being played in there but the LoTRs soundtrack.

In the local Annapolis GW, they play soundtracks to movies most of the time at a good background music level so not to loud but something nice to listen to while painting. So mostly LOTR, Blackhawk down, Master and Commander, stuff like that.

The stores I've been to tend to be rather tight about what they play. By that I mean that they are allowed to play certain albums or what not and nothing else, so it tends to get repetative rather quickly regardless of how much I like whatever is playing.

Well, Phoenix hasn't had a local GW store for a while, but in the stores I worked in I played everything and anything I wanted to hear; It was always PG, cause Kiddies=money, and offended parents = no kiddies. However, if somebody wanted to pop in a disc, that was fine by us, untill the R&B and rap started.
The owners of both stores were different friends of mine since hish school, we all have the same taste in music, and none of them was gonna put up with the hassle of running a gamestore to be subjected to that noise (insert angry old man grumbling here).

Yeah, when I used to pop in (granted, I haven't been back since 2005) they played a lot of LOTR soundtrack, as well as other nerd soundtracks (conan, etc.). I stopped in one in NY once that played real music (alt but not in your face type stuff). That made more sense to me...
