Just to complement the American stereotypes thread. (Sorry if I'm stealing someone's thread)
In my defense I don't drink tea, hardly ever. My teeth are good, no fillings, not crocked. I'm not homosexual, though I did go to boarding school, but didn't see any homosexuality there. I do sound a bit posh, but not that posh.
Scottish people: Drink fight etc. Chip on shoulder
Ireland: ummm... drink fight? Chip on shoulder
Welsh: ummm... drink fight... sheep? Chip on shoulder
Meh I admit it English people also have a chip on their shoulder. Plus English people are work-shy and wet.

Not exactly a stereotype but, English tv is really overrated especially by English people. Don't get me wrong, there are some classics like monty python, black adder etc, but the fast show etc more recent but v pop on gw forums stuff - is not that great. I hate English cop dramas/ whoddunits, hospital shows.

Hmmm. Lets see. How to sum up Blighty?
Ah! Viz to the rescue!
'A Pint and a Fight, Great British Night'
Unless you live in Sarf East Engerland, in which case most people inexplicably drink Lager Top. So not only are they drinking softy booze, but because 'they don't like the taste' they have lemonade added.
There is a word for that you know. It's not a Lager Top. It's a Shandy. A girls drink for big girls blouses. If you are the designated driver, just stick to coke or summat. Watering down alcohol is just a mugs game.
Scotland - Deep seated pride.
Wales - Land of song.
Northern Ireland - Hmm. Yeah. Not quite sure.
England? Depends on region. Essentially anywhere not a Home County, and the people are pretty normal. Enter the Home Counties, and you'll meet a bunch of uncaring, arrogant arseholes who religiously vote Tory, simply because they consider themselves posh. There are of course exceptions. But not terribly many.

Being English, but moving to America, I guess I screw up all the stereotypes :p
Originally from Oxfordshire in the dreaded 'Home Counties' but not remotely posh. I've never voted Tory in my life. (Lib Dem for MEP, Referendum party for MP)
I do drink vast quantities of tea, so that one I own up to. MY teeth are a little rough, but no fillings etc, and in my American vanity, I'm saving up to get them fixed so that they look decent. No boarding school. Not homosexual (I feel limiting to one gender is a little restrictive)
I drink Scotch, Bourbon or Beer (and if you can see through it, it's not beer). I'm told I have a posh accent by Americans and a really common as muck accent by the English.

Well, my teeth are solid as a rock and nice and straight. They're clean but not artificially dazzling white.
From Oxfordshire. Lots of posh people there, yes, the real home counties set, and in my experience they're invariably genuinely pleasant people to be around. It's only when you hit London or the Midlands that you get the social climbers who all seem to be snobby and arrogant and downright nasty. A soldier tried to fight me once because he thought I sounded posh. I'm well spoken of course- pretty RP.
I don't drink tea, although EVERYONE else does, so that's ok.
I've never seen a bowler hat worn except in films.
I haven't really heard of any other stereotypes, though, but I do have trouble watching American shows when they have British themed episodes because they are so cringeworthy. And by have trouble I mean I leave the room.
The Scots- English hatin' penny pinchers. Hugely proud.
The Welsh- I don't know any stereotypes about the Welsh beyond sheep and hating the English. I lived in Wales too long, it shattered all the preconceived ideas I had. I never even came across a sheep.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.

We laughed - knowing that better men would come,

He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags. |

I've never been outside of the US, have awful teeth and am drinking a bottle of green tea with citrus right now. I also like the mixed green tea with black tea, which is not quite as sweet. I really like British stand-up comics if I can understand what they're talking about, which is about 75% of the time. I once heard an interesting line. "The British are the only people who can insult you to your face in such a way that you thank them for the privilege." I don't know if that's true, but I do believe that quite a few rather catty posts on Dakka have gone over my head.

I don't think it's worse than the US, as it's not really fueld by political standings. It's more of a cultural thing.
Stereotypicaly Southerners are poncy arogant folk who dislike smiling and treat everything in life as if it were a nuisance invented to annoy them in between the time they wake up and go to sleep. And northerners are simple minded folk who live for the crack and talk in inaudible accents.
That's the view held by either side at least, I'd say in general most of it is untrue but in my opinion you do get (in the south east at least) a much colder and less friendly atitude from people than you do up north.

I'm not simple minded. Bit of a cack generalisation that. I'd say northerners are deceptively complex. Any simple mindedness is simply a disguise. We invented the term "blackmail" you know.

I would say something derogatory about the north of England. But I've never been there, whats up there anyway? Unemployment and race riots? ;P (I'm kidding I'm sure it's lovely - but I have never been. Been to Japan, Africa etc etc, but no further north than Milton Keynes , and Scotland only very briefly.)

I think it's a stereotype that Southerners think Northerners are simple minded.
Generally in the South we don't think of the North at all
The chip on the shoulder thing isn't a stereotype I've heard of but it should be at least. The Scots, Welsh and Irish seem to have one about the English and the northern English seem to have one about the southern English, and the southern English have one about people richer than them- possibly. Not really sure we acually have one, but richer people tend to annoy everyone.
