This is an abreviated Retro Review. Most of WD214 it taken up by Epic 40k and Gorkamorka, two games I have absolutely nothing to say about.

But that being said there is a great bit of Gorkamorka art.

And a cute back cover.

But the real reason I was looking at is there is a great gallery of 2nd edition IG models.

Some tanks

Some infantry

I think this is one of the first time we saw African skin tones on a GW model.

And finally some armies

Love the Ogryn in a great coat.

For a long time in the 90s WD did not show much in the way of fan armies or conversions so this issue was a real breath of fresh air. It's also neat to see people in WD doing the stuff that real players did, like putting 10 HK missiles on a tank or mixing regiments.

I loved the Supa Grippo Tires ad on the back.

*sigh*

Things like this really show how much has changed in WD.

Probably the painter seemed to like the 'gang fighter' look more than 'rambo wanna-be'.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Anybody else notice the multi-melta coming out of the driver's hatch on the first Chimera?

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

I have fond memories of this issue, it was my first real experience with the Imperial Guard, though I would only start collecting them almost 10 years later. The sheer amount of metal in those armies is staggering, tho.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

haha thats awesome i have that issue lying around somewhere, i remember buying those cadian shock troopers thou........no idea where they are now though.....

Someone in a high position can look to see what those under him think, but he shouldn't change himself for them. Just do as you like, and if no one follows you then that just means you weren't good enough for them. - Bleach.

Thanks. I was in college when this arrived. I remember how we were all excited over the new IG, especially the Catachans.

Fond memories. I especially loved how the Orks were handled in 2nd edition. They may be brutal, they may end up blowing themselves up. Either way, fun times.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Wow how old are the IG tanks? Are they older than 2nd edition?

This confused me as well. I'm pretty sure this tank was shown in the old 3rd Ed. Guard Codex, since I know I've seen it before and I've never looked at this WD. I've also never seen an explanation for that MM.

Today I didn't even have to use my hot-shot las; I gotta say it was a good day.

Only for Nick Davis. The other guys only have like a few squads worth of metal guys.

All of the tanks date back to 2nd ed (post '92), iirc. I can vaguely remember when they were 'new' (I was never a guard player).

SoL is no help as they only have one 1992 catalog (mainly fantasy and epic) and one 1993 catalog (not helpful).

There can be blue plants... in space!

Also, that Supa Grippo Tyres ad is the greatest.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

2nd edition had a optional vehicle modification system where you could swap an existing weapon for another, like a heavy bolter for a multimelta.

Unfortunately I never go around to building my land raider with 2 TL assault cannons (9-27 S8 shots).

Anyway I forgot to note that this issue is from October 1997, anyone who wasn't born then speak up. And if anyone does, the rest of us should take a shot.

What do you mean, WD hasn't changed! Remember that WD with the ad for the battlewagon that came out recently? The one that didn't obviously have "BUY THE BATTLEWAGON" written all over it and was made purely for the sake of humor? "One brootal owna", ah ha ha ha ha!

...ha...

A good article in an otherwise vague issue; props for putting it up. Anthony Bath's Tallarns still look the tits, in my opinion.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

My boys were born that summer, so my buttertroll first wife monopolized my time. 40K was dead to me for a while.

I took the Dark Millennium system and modded my Land Raider. I ditched the TL HB's on top and built an assault cannon turret to replace them. I made the TL LC's on the side into single LC's and the Land Raider ended up costing less than a stock LR, but it was deadly to vehicles and troops.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

That old Trukk actually looks pretty good on the cover. Must be the extra Orkiness.

The Tallarns by Anthony Bath are still my favorite to this day. The yellow is awesome. I remember the Vanquisher from the last IG book, that was so sweet.

Well, if something is tits, that's bad.
