Great photos for a start. However, the Ork general should be fired for getting into a fight with IG with such an open killing field

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

That is more terrain than a lot of the tables at my FLGS wear at any given time. But yes, it will indeed be a killing field. Looking forward to the next post.

Since it appears to be in a military airport, the terrain is adequate and plays to that scenario IMO.

Aside from that, thats a lot of Autocannons (not that its a bad thing)

I dread to think...

Only 1 tank? in IG 1500pts?!?!? that's MAD!! i would take at least 3. And at least one of them would be a Basilisk.

But otherwise awesome.

Why do people still like the Basilisk? It's surpassed in the new Codex by all the other artillery pretty much.

The IG did have a basilisk...sort of. They had the Master of Ordnance with line of sight to most of the board. Had we gone to 2000 points, The IG could have brought some more armor, but since the Ork Horde didn't have any armor at all, we still outclassed them in that department. Hope that Da Big Boss gets our battle report up soon. You guys are gonna love it I hope.

EDIT Just realized that you can't see the whole second platoon in the deployment pics. They are behind the Orky hangars moving on the Ork Air Tower objective while 1st platoon holds the IG objective. Apparently, the Orks missed this as well, because they didn't take a casualty until they were within 12 inches or so of the objective.

I have been playing orks since the beginning of 40k almost. I have the nob bikers and a very fast speed freak army, but I find that a lot of times it makes for a quick game and not much fun for the opposing player.... not that my gaming buddy doesn't do well, but I wanted a challenge and I wanted to try out a mob army with a few interesting things, such as the deffkoptas and my new stormboyz with Zag. I also stuck my weirdboy in with a mob of 28 or 30 slugga boyz. That is always a blast....no pun intended(You will get it once i finish the battle report.)

To answer the terrain comments.... i just finished this terrain not to long ago. I posted some great photos of it and my entire army. Check it out here:

While the open terrain looks to play to the IG strengths, the forces just do not look that far apart. With the Deff Koptas and the Stormboys I am thinking the guard do not get much of a chance to shoot.

Plus with the wierdboy in with the 30 Sluggas I am guessing that the orks either got an early charge on the waaagh or deepstruck close enough to blast the IG to ribbons. Ork shooting is always underestimated.

I always strive to have themed terrain - a small air-strip is a great idea for a playing field - but the key to making themed terrain and making good themed terrain is to ensure that the theme doesn't impact the game too heavily.

An open field like that impacts the game too heavily.

Sure, it may look good, but when you've created a table with a fantastic river that dominates the table, or have a city square that you slap in the middle of the table, these sort of things can determine the outcome of a game before deployment is even over. It won't be the case all the time, but it's better to set up a table that can be fought over rather than fought against.

Battle Report Time!

It was a Pitched Battle with Capture and Control. As you can see on the earlier post the two objectives were an Crate full of Ammo that da orks wanted reeely badd, and the other objective was the Ork air tower. The Imperial Guard knew if they could take out that tower, then the Orks air superiority would somehow cease.... (or something cool like that.) :-)

Ork Turn 1 Photo:

(A story like report is coming soon to a post near you!)

Here it is.....

Weirdboy Snikshak Dakazod had been having troubles with excessive pain in his cranium, but today it seemed unbearable. The boyz had been up all night excited about the upcoming fight and the psychic energy being generated was more than he had ever experienced. He knew the huumies were coming, Mork had told him in a dream, but he could also smell them, but at this point it did not matter, they had already began their advance.

Things couldn’t be worse. Zagstruk and is Vulcha boyz were out looking for the Mekboy who flew off in one of his newest contraptions and Snikshak hasn’t seen the Kommandos for two days, of course he figured the sneaky Boss Snikrot was adding to his dog chain collection somewhere behind the enemy lines. The pain in his head was becoming unbearable. While gripping his head, Snikshak grabed the nearest grot and screams, “Wer is dat dum Zagstruk? He shood be her bi now. Da huumies ar cummin dis way fast and we dunt have much aer supart. Dos dum deff piluts are crazee gits and whel wrekk befur dey killa enyding. Arrrrrggggg!"

The Deffkoptas hovered for just a few moments and then sped across the airstrip to engage the Lemun Russ. Their twin-linked rokkits leaving flaming trails of smoke as they twist and turn in circular motions. Only two connected and both just bounced off the thick front armor.

The shoota boyz had already taken off across the battlefield, shootas blazing and yelling, “Waaargh!” Their two bigshootas connected and shredded several huumies manning the Autocannons. The hail of rounds coming from the mass of green skins caused the Imperial Guardsmen manning the heavy weapons to panic and fallback in fear.

The Slugga boyz with Snikshak took off across the airstrip towards the enemy. Their numbers bolstered the psychic energy of the Eadbanger and helped protect him from being shot to quickly. Each kept one eye on Snikshak just out of curiosity, because they never knew what Gork or Mork was going to do through him or to him. Even though he was a younger Weirdboy he was still a Warphead, allowing him to have some control of his powers. Energy surged from him and blasted three guardsmen leaving nothing but smoking boots. The boyz all yelled enthusiastically at the display of power.

The other mob of Slugga boyz and Gretchin stayed back to guard the tower. They were not pleased with this menial task, but they could see the huumies coming towards them and knew they would soon see blood.

Agreed. A plane/flyer or two or a couple of service vehicles on the runway would have broken up the kill zone in the middle and still maintained the theme...

So, after posting the army list for the IG, I noticed I did my math wrong on game day. I thought I had 1487, but was actually at 1387. I could have added my veteran squad with a missile launcher to help bolster my lines. Probably would have made a big difference with the fight being this close. That's what I get for not making the list the night before instead of doing it the day of. Ooops.

Imperial Guard Turn 1:

(Captain Antonius wrote this narration of the first turn)

Major Stryker and Easy Company had been dropped from the regiments' valkyries a half day's march from the Ork airfield. Divisions' orders had been clear: take the airfield and hold it until relieved. Once they were reinforced, the army group would move in thunderbolt fighters and heavy artillery and make it a proper Imperial outpost. His scouts had reported that the airfield was almost abandoned, held only by a few mobs. Stryker wasn't impressed. He had faced the Ork menace more than once and he knew if there was a few that they could see, there were alot more just over the next hill that they couldn't.

As E company moved into position ready to strike, the vox lit up with hails from a lone leman russ battle tank. The Cadian 10th Armored had spread its units throughout the battle zone and the 1st company commander, Captain Lucius Drom had been assigned to them to help them take the airfield. Stryker had him move Iron Death into position on his right flank to provide a strong anchor point.

Suddenly, the Orks came screaming over the hill opposite the runway. Quickly scanning the field, he noticed that these Orks were mostly footslogging boyz and they had no armor. A wry smile crossed his face as he knew that they held the upper hand. The Orks would have to cross his killing field to get to him, thining thier ranks with every inch. The flying machines that the Orks did possess, would be a problem, but they were running right at his newly reinforced right flank. If the Leman Russ withstood the Orks primitive firepower, they would be crushed under its heavy iron treads.

Muzzle flashes and thunder filled the air momentarily drowning out the raucous cries of the Orks. Both 1st and 2nd platoon's autocannon squads took several casualties and began to withdraw, leaving thier guns behind. A few rokkits hit the leman russ, but its blessed armor held. Stryker scowled and roared his defiance to his fleeing troops, "Get back in the fight you cowards or I'll have you shot! Get those guns on the Orks or we'll all die!" Both squads stopped dead in thier tracks, snapped a quick salute, and sprinted back to thier guns. The battle hardened Major turned to his vox operator, "Get me Lt. Lopez, 2nd Platoon". The veteran guardsman handed him the microphone "Lopez, here sir." "Lopez, the Orks are focusing on us. Use this distraction to move on the tower. They will be some in cover over there, but you can root them out. Get a move on, son, we don't have much time here for this to work." "We're on our way, sir. Lopez out."

Stryker turned to his Ordnance liason, "Turn those Orks to green mush, Lieutenant." "Love to Major." The lieutenant brought his magnoculars to his eyes, and spoke into his vox bead. A far off THUMP and then a screaming shell passed overhead. A moment later, a huge fireball exploded near the Orks, blowing a few to smithereens. Smiling, Stryker turned and faced his men. "Fire at will! Destroy them all!"

The Leman Russ bucked as its battlecannon blasted away at the deff copters sending a couple to the ground. Its lascannon and heavy bolters chewed up what was left while Captain Drom blazed away with the heavy stubber. 2nd squad, 1st platoon moved up and shot with thier lasguns. Scary, but ineffective against the tough coptas. The remaining autocannon teams blazed away, thining the numbers streaming across the field. Frag Missiles streaked out from the 1st platoons anti armor team, further reducing the Ork horde.

While the Orks weren't stopped, they were definatley fewer. Stryker braced himself for what would be more heavy fire from the Orks as they reloaded and closed on the brave Cadians.

Ork Turn 2:

As the guardsmen began firing at the oncoming greenskins Boss Snikrot and his Kommondos snuck into position behind the unsuspecting human lines. “Burnas in da frunt,” whispered Boss Snikrot. He was anxious to cut a few throats with his massive blades known as Mork’s Teeth, but he knew they would be dripping with blood soon enough. As they low crawled into position, Snikrot confidently and quietly said, “toste em boyz.” The two Burna Boyz were more than willing to oblige, they quickly jumped to their feet and ignited their weapons. A massive wash of flames engulfed the entire human line. Flailing arms and screams could be heard over the inferno. By the time the screams had ceased and the flames had receded, the entire 3rd squad of 1st platoon was nothing but charred remains. The reflection of the flames reflected on Snikrot’s large teeth as he chuckled under his breath and said, “Dident leeve me any did ya boyz?” Before he could say another word one of his kommandos yelled, “Get dooowwn boss!” He turned just in time to see a spinning and twisting Rokkit ricochet off the Lemun Russ and shoot directly towards him. Stairing the rokkit directly in the roughly painted eyes and smile he quickly jumped to the ground to avoid being struck. While standing to his feet he quickly turned his gaze towards the culprit of his near death, the last remaining deffkopta flying in an uncontrollable fashion towards the Lemun Russ.

With both rokkits missing their mark, the pilot flipped the switch to turn on the buzzsaw and pulled back on the controls to bring his flying contraption around to the rear of the Lemun Russ. Revving the Buzzsaw he laughed uncontrollably as he began to saw into the metal beasts innards. With a large snap the spinning blade cut through into the engine compartment igniting the fuel and creating a massive explosion that killed the crew and two unsuspecting guardsmen that were too close to escape the blast. When the debris settled the Kopta continued to fly. The crazy ork pilot looked over his shoulder and winked at Snikrot who was choking from the smoke and dust that was being kicked up by the spinning rotors that wobbled and spun above the kopta.

Weirdboy Snikshak heard a massive explosion on the left side of the human lines, but was unable to look that way for his eyes were closed in pain from the massive surge of power that was emanating around him. He grunted as a flash of green light surrounded him and the mob of orks with him and they disappeared and quickly reappeared across the battlefield just meters away from the frontline of the humans. The guardsmen were caught of guard as the flash of green light ignited with fire from the boyz sluggas. The guardsmen were torn apart by the slugga rounds that engulfed their position. The only human left standing was a defiant 1st squad 1st platoon sergeant who obviously was a veteran who did not cower easily. Even though the blood of his squad was splattered all over him, he pulled his chainsword out and flipped the activation switch.

IG turn 2

3rd Squad's deaths shook Major Stryker to the core. He had not expected the Orks from his flank and the Master of the Fleet accompanying his squad had looked dumbfounded when Stryker's steely gaze pierced him. Now, with the Leman Russ destroyed, and Orks in his lines, the right flank was about to fall. Only his battle hardened Kasrkin squad could stem the tide. He quickly ordered them to engage the flanking Orks and secure the perimeter.

An urgent vox from Lt. Jorgenson of 1st platoon signaled another immediate threat on the line's center. "Major! I've lost 1st squad! Orks just appeared out of nowhere...like they were teleported or something. I'm moving to engage them, but I need all the big gun support I can get! There's like 30 of em! If we can't get em to turn tail, we'll loose the center!"

"Understood, Lieutenant. Engage and destroy them. We've got Orks in our lines. 3rd Squad is gone, and 2nd squad is falling back. We've lost our armor support. Its up to the men to rally and take the Orks on at their own game."

An ominous pause came from the vox as the young lieutenant mulled over the loss of his platoon. But his reply was all that was needed. "I'm on it, sir."

The major turned to his Kasrkin sergeant, "Go get those damned Orks!" The Kasrkin nodded and his men pulled thier pistols and as they poured off the hill. Fire rolled out of the leading Kasrkin's flamer and a frag grenade hurtled out of the grenade launcher. The combined fire from the Major's command squad and the Kasrkin reduced the infiltrating orks to just a few roaring fighters. 2nd squad, as they fell back, flamed and shot the remaining deff copta, causing its remaining rokkits to detonate in a black and red fireball. A cheer came from thier lips as they turned to face the other oncoming orks.

The Master of Ordnance called down another fire mission in support of 2nd platoon moving on the Ork objective, slaughtering 7 of the cursed xenos. The remaining autocannons and missile launchers fired on the teleporting Ork mob, causing horrific causualties. 13 of the green beasties exploded into hunks of putrid, stinking flesh. The mass of firepower poured upon them, caused them to turn tail and run, once again securing the middle of the Imperial line. The lone sergeant of 1st Squad sprinted after the Orks firing his laspistol as he went, never giving an inch of ground. His bravery, or insanity, stirred the souls of those Cadians who could see the blood spattered soldier.

The Kasrkin tossed thier frag grenades as they fell upon the stunned Orks. The sergeant's powersword sliced through the biggest of the Orks like a hot knife through butter. His look of stunned appreciation caused the now blood spattered sergeant to give him a smile as he kicked his detached head into the smoking crater where the Leman Russ had been. The Kasrkin consolidated into the crater to bolster the right flank where the Leman Russ had been.

Things were beginning to look up for the Cadians. They had held. If they could begin to make a push on the now severly depleted Ork flank, they may cause the Orks to withdraw from thier objective and give up the airfield. Many of his troopers had died or were severly wounded and out of the fight. The Orks would come again, shooting as they came. If they could hold once more, the day would be thiers.

No. I believe that a table should have a balance of terrain in order to avoid handing an easy win to any style of play. I also believe that it is possible to create a highly themed board without that theme deciding the game.

But I think you knew that already and were just trying to have a dig. But I'll let that slide.

I love themed terrain for battles and besides do you really think the orks care about the open terrain.... thats why they have mobs of 30. The only ork that wouldn't would be Snikrot and his Kommandos. But as a general I would much prefer more terrain, but a little challenge keeps you fresh and on your toes, but normally we have more terrain. More reports coming soon.

Isn't a Lemann Russ AV14 all around? A Deffkopta can't scratch it then--even with a buzzsaw. It's S7 on the charge.

14/13/10 ( Demolisher variants 14/13/11 ) and Close Combat attacks vs vehicles( not counting Dreadnoughts ) are resolved against the rear armor.

o.k. for some reason I thought it had armor similar to a LR. My bad!
