It seems on this forum and others like it simple mistakes can cause people to be subjected to harsh and unfair treatment...i myself have experienced this and was considering moving to a different forum.I aks why? why do this to new users if they make a mistake or to regular users who slip-up.Forums are community based and to be scorned in your community can leave someone not wanting to be part of it.Dakka does have a reputation.

So i ask peoples opinion on this matter?

It happens alot on dakka , but its not limited to dakka only.
The mob mentality goes for everywhere , not sure if there are any possible ways to avoid it unless the mods are very strict or keep quiet about personal opinions.

I have made some comments on counterfeiting / recasting threads to be immoral , and wow some people actually are trolling me for been "good".

What happend that you wanted to leave o_o...

You slipped up get you scurvy dog!!

Its important to remember:
1. The ignore key for people you don't like
2. report posts that violate Dakka Rule #1: be polite
3. The "mob" only has power if you give it power.

To quote the oft-used phrase: welcome to the Internet. I believe you need to first learn a very important lesson about how the Internet works. You will find this is the case no matter where you look.

Its far easier to type aggressively or in rude manner on web forum, chat rooms etc as you are not in an environment where that person is able to knock your block off had you said the same face to face. Also its worth mentioning that conveying emotions and tone in a written format is very difficult, hence the use of things called emoticons like --> which are used in messages when people type a rude message and use them to show that the message is actually meant in jest or humourous sarcasm. Or to convey comedy or something you find amusing, the list goes on, just look to your left when you post reply and you'll see all the ones available to you on dakka. "Note the quick reply at the bottom does not show them"

Best bet is to either lurk more than post as you get a feel for things or use the ignore button for those that are unable to post helpfully. Most people on dakka are friendly, and even if they do gripe at you for asking what is considered common knowledge, most will still point you in the right direction.

This and all other forums are mixing pots of people from across the world, age, gender and social/political outlook. You will say and post things that will anger others, you can't help that, other people will irritate and anger you. Collision on the interwebs, where social graces are switched off due to anonimity, are inevitable. You won't find 'peace' on another forum and I think this is the best for things being resolved without either mollycoddling protectiveness or freeforall fight clubbing.

I would advise you to stay here and further to remember that conflict is inevitable, just be measured by the way you resolve it. The moral highground is a great place to defend from.

When I was all for quitting an mmo, a friend of mine gave me some advice that's a good rule, is your friends list bigger than your ignore list, if it is, you're doing something right, if it isn't, make more friends.

Good point, forgot to mention.

Avoid Politics and Religon at all costs, these topics are the highest culprits of flame wars. So if you enter a thread debating either of these two then tread VERY carefully

Mean green has a point. The precieved anonimity of the net makes being a douche somewhat easier psychologically, even though in reality the net is a lot less anonymous than it used to be ( I've met many people in RL that I met online but are right here in my local community, and we've all heard stories about people who didn't get jobs or got canned because of something they said on facebook).

Someone also mentioned that the internet feels safe, therefore people will say things they woudn't face to face, or even over a phone. Contrary to what cynics say, I think that the vast majority of people are more or less nice, and don't want to even hurt people's feelings, let alone risk physical conflict. The internet takes all of those verbal and physical social cues away. Reading a forum is just text, like a book, and it gives all the positive feelings from insulting someone with none of the negative cues that make people feel guilty.

I think a lot of it is when someone new to the forums starts posting while demonstrating that they clearly didn't bother to read the forum rules. Ie. 1337 speaking, poor grammar/spelling (though there's always more leeway with this point if the poster isn't a US or UK native), generally being an arse. Usually these are very enthusiastic young teens (stereotype, but not untrue) and lots of the regulars don't really like dealing with it. Take a look at the posts in this thread, for example - all of us are regulars and all of us are expressing our points pretty clearly.

Another issue is when someone (and even regulars make this mistake) brings up a very commonly recurring topic that a simple browse through the forums could've probably answered ("How do I strip plastic minis???!?" is a good example).

Just like in most things in life, it's a bit frustrating to deal with "new guys" mostly because the regulars are used to things running a certain way. When someone new shows up and clearly hasn't really read through or absorbed the rules, it kind of puts a stick in the spokes, so to speak, on the forum. Could the regulars be a bit nicer? Probably, though to be fair, these instances aren't terribly uncommon so a loss of patience is somewhat understandable.

But as Elric also points out - it's a large aspect of internet culture. If you can't take your licks, then yes, you should probably move on to another forum. But if you've got thicker skin than that, and learn to obey forum rules and understand the flow of the site, you'll notice the hostility go down significantly.

All in all, Dakka isn't so bad (although OT and the You Make Da Calls can be pretty hectic). The thing I appreciate most about Dakka is that people for the most part write intelligibly here. And that goes a LONG way to making a website better than others.

Ahhh The Modquisition....Trolling with one hand, Maintaining Dakka with the other.

Humor aside, forums can be hostile if people decide to throw grammar out the window, or just do something that may seem cool to one person, but is just blatant trolling to others.

The internet is great for the Jackasses of the world to come together and be jackasses. Sure, they're not the best guys to hang around, but it's the internet, where the laws of the world apply to about 20% of it.

I feel the same way about the hostile mob mentality as an already answered rules question. It's just like a little annoying parrot that repeats what has already been said and I usually skip over it...unless someone has a witty insult

unfortunately more often than not it isn't. They're generally participating until someone points that fact out, then it's warnings all around!

Like touched upon earlier the internet seemingly brings about the inner douche in everyone although a lot of it can be attributed to miscommunication and/or trolling.

Because of these reasons some people commit suicide over whats written to/about them on the internet; but then again if you haven't developed a thick hide the internet is not for you nor is life unfortunately. Especially sucks for the likes of politicians but many have it coming like Dan Quayle's infamous 'potatoe' incident.

Hell, one of the first photoshopped images that floated around forums went something like: "Arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics. If you win you're still _______." Yes I'm being relatively PC - not sure how George Carlin-esque I can be around these parts.

The topic of anonymous flaming online is pretty well hashed. Keep in mind a few rules I've tried to live by:

1) Everybody assumes they're posts are coherent, well reasoned, easy to understand and correct.
1a) Most posts aren't.

2) Intent is impossible to read, and the social graces that cause to go give benefit of the doubt to people IRL are absent.

3) Getting replies to posts is the only way to know people are reading, and thus paying attention. For posters that crave attention, they need feedback, and negative is easier to get than positive. The more attention they need/want, their posts increase in both quantity and flammability.

4) Savvy netizens are aware of these rules, and will operate in such a way as to appear to be merely misinterpreted if called out for trolling, when they actually know what they are doing. In many ways the most annoying posters, they take a long time to detect. The best way to deal with them? Simply take everything they say with a grain of salt.

5) Finally, the net is simply full of jerks. And not fun, witty jerks. Just emotionally stunted boys(and they tend to be male) that lay into others because they don't have the ability or the desire to do so IRL. Have fun!
