There is some blatantly bad stuff out there...
Here the folks are mostly coherent, polite for the most part, (remember S.....?)

The absolute truthiness of this statement is staggering. If you don't report it, odds are we're not going to see it.

Interesting that.
How do you decide if a thread should be reported?
The Space Wolf Rumour thread was a prime example of lots of users behaving like a prat.
A prime example of idiocy at work, just because someone wanted to "chat" about something they didn't like.
It took me ages to post something that was even "remotely" polite.
And reporting it would probably have been a waste of time IMO.
To the OP, read through the forums first on a subject you want to discuss and see what the tone of those threads is like.
If it makes you twitch, don't post anything.

It's certainly not my word, it was used back in the usenet days, when "people that used the internet" was a very specific and separate demographic.

My rule of thumb is that if a post makes me annoyed enough to consider flaming back, I report it instead. Everybody has a different threshold, but I've never seen a mod ask or even imply that people should report fewer threads. So, any time a post makes viscerally annoyed, I report it.

Something I rarely do on here
Moderation in action
Certain things are obvious Alert bait, such as racism, blatant rudeness, and thread necromancy, duplication and wrong forum. Other things are harder to call, but I like the idea that something which provokes an angry response is probably worth an alert.
I would rather people report things that annoy them, than just simmer quietly and hate the forum. Of course, not all alerts are actionable.
I sometimes take an alert, review the case and PM the complainer that the offence isn't really serious and they should simply ignore the post (and poster.) On other occasions I will forward a complaint for a group opinion.

I used to worry that I reported too much, but I'm glad that the mods actually take the time to seriously check the tickets and the threads in question. I've also had some mod feedback on reporting, which is great as well.

I also alert stuff on the basis that just because one post might not be over the line, if a member receives multiple alerts about a series of posts, it might lead to more preventative measures.
I used to work as a retail manager, and like most businesses I'd rather have more negative feedback from customers early than have angry former customers later. Very rarely are the words "I wish I had less information" uttered by people making decisions.
