If I see a thread degrading into a flame war I generally avoid posting as you can guarantee they won't appriciate you sticking your nose in their arguement. Its a sure fire way to get yourself flamed.

If its me that accidently started a heated arguement then I try to end it amicably. But for some dakkaties its far to hard to let something drop and you often see threads filled with pages of posts from just a handful of people repeating the exact same info over and over again as if it will magically change.

My favourite quote from new dakkaties who get flamed badly is "fine, I thought dakka was a nice place so I'm cancelling my account and never comming" ... Why anyone thinks that gets them anywhere is beyond me, you just know that no-one can resist a "don't let the door hit you on the way out" comment and the guy will always 9 out of 10 post later on anyway, usually in the same thread.
(though I have to say thats usually when they haven't followed the forum rules or post something highly inflamatory and don't expect people to get upset over it)

I think I'll avoid the OT forum from now on. I can see how it's become a bubbling mass of... stuff.

Honestly, serious topics descend into either 'hurr durr zombie apocalypse fap fap fap' or 'hurr durr Obama is a commie' whenever I go in there. Not generalising or anything of course...

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I completely agree with the very first post in this thread. I've seen new posters blasted by SEVERAL older posters for not putting a question mark in a rumor title. Like, that is going to bring about the end of the world. A friendly remark, or reminder, would take care of any mistake. Instead, you have to go through sixteen posts about how terrible it is that someone forgot to put a question mark in a thread title. Why would a new user ever try to post again? After their warm reception, I would be surpised if they even returned to the site.

Secondly, I am sick and tired of the "I HATE GW" rants that dominate this site. I do not spend any time on this site because of it. I tried to make constructive comments about this once, but was personally blasted for my efforts. So, I just went to another site for my 40K and Fantasy fill.

Games Workshop is a business. The purpose of a business is to make money. I'm sorry if you do not agree with that. I'm sorry if you do not approve of every price hike, business choice, or crazy marketing campaign that GW employs. Companies all over the world do this every day, and no one gets more heat than Games Workshop.

The bottom line is...if you don't like GW/40K/FB...then DON'T BASH THEM. Leave the forums for the people that love these games and settings, so that we can share our love of the hobby. No one wants to have to go through 18 posts about "I hate GW" before they read 1 post about "I thought it was kind of cool..."

I have not even signed into this website for months because of this. However, when I saw the title of this thread, I wanted to add my thoughts to the fire. I know that they will not reach the individuals that need to hear them the most. But, I had to try...

Now, on with your flame wars and nerd rage about free speach and poster bashing and "I hate GW"... I'm going to go visit my other sites, where people actually respect each other, and still like the hobby...

I can still remember when a box of 30 Space Marines was $30.00. Now THAT'S old school! In fact, I started playing in the Rogue Trader days...yes, I am that old. Played Warhammer Fantasy for years before Rogue Trader even came out...

Loken:

while i have seen this being done, i havent done it yet, allthough it is somewhat annoying at times when people post in the rumors about something.

I hate GW threads make dakka go round, it happens, people have likes and dislikes, you dont have to read them.

To end this on a pretty basic sentance: If you take such a dislike that you are willing to leave, then why even have the internet?

Now, im not trying to be an ass about it, but it happens on the net, people will troll and sadly others will follow them, its just a case of ignoring such people, or flame them in return (make sure its witty rather than offensive as it would break rules)

Sigh. You're clearly not new to the internet, or, if you are, you need to learn some things. Online communities are just like any other community: we have rules and structure, as well as taboos. When I see, for example, a thread that says "Vendetta Plastic Sprue," I get excited. When I find out it's some guy asking if we know anything, I become upset. Is it the end of the world? No. Is it a little understandable why people would post some hostility after that? I think a little bit.

Secondly, I am sick and tired of the "I HATE GW" rants that dominate this site. I do not spend any time on this site because of it. I tried to make constructive comments about this once, but was personally blasted for my efforts. So, I just went to another site for my 40K and Fantasy fill.

That's a personal choice. I've found that well reasoned arguments in behalf of GW tend to do well. Rants telling us how sick you are of our whining somehow fail to rally us around the old flag. I can't imagine why not. ..

Games Workshop is a business. The purpose of a business is to make money. I'm sorry if you do not agree with that. I'm sorry if you do not approve of every price hike, business choice, or crazy marketing campaign that GW employs. Well, except microsoft. And the Oil Companies. And haliburton. And even Whole Foods.....

Look, I'm as tired of the unrelenting negativity as anybody else, but if the other option is shrill moralistic preaching, than I'll take my cynicism. I hate to break this to you, but GW does things that make my life more difficult, cost me more money, and waste my time. Yes they produce the hobby I love, but after $50 and 6 hours spent re-basing IG heavy weapon teams, I was upset at GW.

I have not even signed into this website for months because of this. However, when I saw the title of this thread, I wanted to add my thoughts to the fire. I know that they will not reach the individuals that need to hear them the most. But, I had to try...

This was a little better than your previous soap boxes, but you can't possible expect a group of people known for being cynical and hostile to respond well to a scolding.

Now, on with your flame wars and nerd rage about free speach and poster bashing and "I hate GW"... I'm going to go visit my other sites, where people actually respect each other, and still like the hobby...

First off, I've never seen an open internet community where people actually respect each other. There are places with Super-max level moderation teams, and there are smaller, often pay sites that tend to get along pretty well. But if you're found 'em, congrats.

Reading this post, and a few of your previous rants on this topic, it seems to me that what you've lost is all sense of nuance. You seem to see dakka as this Thunderdome where the weak are flayed alive and nothing is discussed but our hatred for GW. Even in the most negative threads, the comments tend to run towards specific problems people have with GW. I know, it's easy up on your pedestal to judge all of us, but I think you're being overly harsh towards our flaws and overly dismissive of our strengths.

It seems this thread has become rather popular...and that alot of people have different views on the "hostility of forums" and many say that theres no answere to it except for hitler style mods picking out the "bad un's" before they spread, but wouldnt it be easier if people just grew up a little bit...?

I don't like it when people kneejerk react to innocent, yet improperly formatted questions either. However I am a realist, and i know that there is that small percentage of people that can't resist the urge to drop a kneejerk responce in a terrets sort of way. This site is a surprisingly well behaved place overall.

I also have a hard time believing that any other GW fan site doesn't have it's share of GW hate. It's quite disengenious of you to imply that DAKKA is the only site that had GW bashing going on.

Dakka is host to a huge range of different poeple of all ages, sexes, religons, ethics and moral backgrounds. People will always have different view or a different interpretation of a rule or similar. You get the exact same in real life with the only difference is that people on the internet are generally bolder in their statements and tone. If you can't hack that then the answer is simple, don't post.

Its why we have the MOD's, to manage the content and try to make sure inappropriate comments, pictures, etc are acted upon.

(post is a general statement and not specifically aimed at a person in particular)

I like it because it makes it easy to verify that someone is indeed a j-hole.

I also love the guys who drift into a thread to point out that a MOD should moderate something. If you have an issue with something hit the report button and shut your face instead of climbing on a high horse and acting like a douche bag. Worst form of trolling imho...

I say if you know another site where anything resembling a voice of dissent is immediately silenced and dealt with so as not to interrupt your "I love GW" circle-jerk, then by all means, spend all your time there. The way I understood it, Dakka wasn't a GW website, you don't have to be a GW fanboy or even play their games to post here. I'm allowed to post my opinion, whether positive or negative, and if you don't like that then you're the one who can remove themselves.

I understand the frustration with what looks like pointless, incessant whining, and in some cases I think people do nag on GW a little unfairly, but if you're going to go as far as spewing bs like "If you don't have anything nice to say then STFU" in response, then please spare me.

I've been on a fair few forums now, my post counts are an iffy way to judge my attendance as I'm a lurking Barsteward.

My join dates are pretty consistant though 03-04, (well apart from here on Dakka with the restart and everything and Seer because I lost my original login details via a email address change) and aye you see a lot of hostility where ever you go. Folks have said already its the old Gung Ho sitting behind the illusion of the keyboard/screen that does it.
Plus the added fact many of us are what many would consider intelligent people, ie we're never bloody wrong, which obviously causes some arguements.

Created threads/chatted on Warseer, Heresy, B&C, Neoseeker, Druchii.net, Black Library, Old GW forums, several that didn't last more than six months, and I lurk on several more. I think you generally see it everywhere, although the best thing to do is not let it get under your skin. I've even done Mod work on a couple of sites, and what a thankless task that is I tell ya. Probably why up until know I haven't been banned anywhere, if I respect anyone its the Mods/admins of these places.

On a side note I do find I have more fun on Dakka than anywhere else, I laugh at way more posts here, and even though I have gone to other boards mainly from time to time, this would be my GW forum home board that I always return to. Yes perhaps Dakka has a rep for being a little sarcastic towards GW at times, but seeing the forums around the net few are different. Hell in Neoseeker's case I've watched it change from a heavily policed board, to one where often Mods seem to be swearing more than the trolls. (Although to be fair I rarely go to Neo these days so I maybe unfair with that one.)

Tbh I'd be gutted if Dakka ever changed.

Honestly I come on here mainly when I'm at work, at work I am very very bored, so the "conflicts" between members serve as a source of amusement.

Also it seems that here, or anywhere on the net, I am alot like how I am in real life. I will berate someone for errors, then turn around and make the same one. Jump into defend someone when I think they've been wronged, or stand by and watch because that's easier.

I do what I personally feel is right at the time, and if what is right at the time is to endlessly berate someone for leaving out a question mark, which I'm not sure I've done, then I will, because that's who I am a person with a really fluid set of morals and beliefs. The only things Im not likely to double back on are friends, but even they can bear the brunt of an attack.

Not sure any of this applies, but deal with it.

Most likely it is not an 'old fogey' who's done the shouting, but another newb who's got a higher post count or /friended some of the more noticeable personas on the board. Some of the elder statesmen on the board occasionally take potshots over the writing and spelling, I've done it when the sentances don't even make coherent sense. But the 'HEY donkey-cave YOOS CAPITALZ' brigade jumping on someone for a missed comma or capital letter somewhere are usually overweening in an attempt to curry favour with the percieved old guard. They are usually the one that ends up looking like an ass.

I've noticed that it can be anyone who rips into new members, from the "Old Guard" to people who've only been members for a short time. It seems like while the latter is more common, the former gets put into the memory easier. Really who cares that another noobie is yelling at you, they are new too, but when a member that's been active and is known around these parts says something then it sits in. Particularly if you see one yelling at you for doing something and not at someone else for doing the same thing.

Plus our perception of the Old Guard is all different, to some people a year is a long time to be active some where so people will look to them.
