With the puppies' codex looming, I've had a hankering to fiddle with colours and build a new chapter ( Huh ? Yes, heresy for a dedicated Smurf nut ! )

That said, I didn't want to actually do the Wolves, so had to come up with something slightly different. Hence the Ice Panthers.

Fluff wise, the colour is explained away by the natural habitat of their title creature which, on their homeworld, prowls a tundra environment contanimated by traces of Cobalt(II) Aluminate, giving their pelt a blue-grey shade.
The chapter itself is to be of Ultramarines genestock, but follow the organisation and fighting style of the Space Wolves, venerating Guilliman as their "Father" and Russ as their "Teacher"

So, with that in mind, I threw this poor sod together ( bear in mind, it's just a rough workup ) and thought I'd ask you guys for opinions (on colourscheme and fluff, both of which may be subject to change once I lay my mitts on the codex)

(I know, I know, yet another blue-grey SM !)
Excuse the poor images and shoddy lighting, it's early AM in UK, and I'm still using a cellphone camera !

For the sake of breaking up the colours without resorting to yellow or gold, I tagged him as Fourth Company, First Tactical Squad.

So, opinions ?

Before I add or comment or interject any kind of opinion on the paint scheme I need to know one thing, and it is fluff wise. What is the Planets Color, I know you say tundra, but this is space, snow on a distant planet could be red because of some thing in the Moister lmao

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.

While I like the "Ice Panther" concept, I think the color choice should be further removed from an almost typical Space Wolf.

And I'm not a fan of the green trim. How about Ultramarines blue, instead? Or you could use white for the large armor pieces with UM blue for specific areas (shoulder pads) and then wash the white with the Space Wolf Grey ?

Just throwing ideas out for you ... kudos to you for doing something I can't seem to do these days ... Paint !!

I agree with myrthe the green trim doesn't fit with the rest of the model perhaps blue

Tundra isn't necessarily arctic in appearance.

Bleak, yes, but you can get vegetation and marshland. I'd say the green trim is too vibrant for such an atmosphere, dull it down a bit, camo green/rotting flesh would fit a bit better. Otherwise, very nice

ZeinEizoku : The fluff is still just an early draft, but as I said in my opening post, the habitat of the panther is tainted with traces of Cobalt(II) Aluminate (better known as Cobalt Blue). Of course, being only at Trace level limits the impact of both toxicity and pigmentation upon the native panthers. I haven't yet considered the climate or geology of the remainder of the planet as yet.

slann : Thanks

Dez : Once I get the kinks ironed out, snow basing is certainly an option. I only did the base on this mini to give it a more finished look.

Myrthe & smeezilla : The company colour isn't set in stone, so the green is certainly up for replacement. Perhaps blue, as you both suggest, but in what shade ? Ultra blue would certainly help tie in with the chapter's genetic heritage and would still make it a Battle Company (5th) .The SW grey base colour was intended to represent both the tainted snow and provide a visible link to the SW fighting style, but I'm considering making it a little more pale (possibly a 75% white to 25% SW grey mix) but I do want some grey element to the main colour.

ALL : Thanks guys, some good points to consider Anyone else ?

Marushi : Sorry, I was typing my reply when you posted. The tundra environment I'm shooting for is right on the edge of the ice-cap, but I agree that such environments are more bleak than snowy, so I'll bear that in mind when I make a final choice re:basing for sure. Camo green trim ? Nice idea, certainly worth a go. Thanks

Well if may suggest a little for the scheme you can take it as you will.

I would do something like a White Head, arms and lower Legs and Knees.

I would paint the thighs and the chest and the Shoulder pads with maybe an Ice Blue or a 50:50 Ice Blue/ skull white... something like that...

Then on the Thighs and Shoulder Pads, make a type of "Hatch Mark" Camo of a ice blue with maybe white.

For the Trim you could go with a Silver, trying to play on the shimmer of ice and what not from the lighting on the planet.

You could give Space Wolf Grey Helmets to the Sergeants and the Veterans.

I am not sure if my comment is understandable but I tried.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Hope this Helps

I could not make the Camouflage pattern that I was talking about but it would be used to break up the harshness of the Bright Ice blue color on the Thighs, Chest, Abdomen, Shoulder Pads, and Cod Piece. lol Think Tiger Camouflage... if that helps.

ZeinEizoku : I figured it out eventually . Not a bad scheme, might draft it as a Veteran or Terminator layout to make them stand out from the rank & file. Thanks .

I gotta say, I'm getting a few good ideas here ( much needed coz I've been painting Ultras way too long !) Thanks guys

O H I am in the Webway...

Yeah it looks a bit to Space Wolfish.

I might get more of a metallic cobalt feel goin.

So maybe something like this http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/White_Panthers

except the black is a metallic blue and you can hit it with a matt varnish after to dull down the metal and make it less shiny.

Throw a comment in the Nuts & Bolts forum, the mods will advise or adjust it for you. Mine changed every week (I'm using a 3mobile dongle) till they sorted it out.

ZeinEizoku : Nice ! Definately considering that for the Terminators.

EzeKK : I considered metallic blue (I still have an OOP Polished Blue) but I use that for Ultramarines Honour Guard and Characters, so it would look too similar if I combined forces for Apoc games.

Edit: Black spots should be ignored, couldn't figure out how to get rid of em in photty shop.

Marushi : Yup, definately a decent Scout colourscheme . (Got to get some more damned scouts now .) I'll certainly make use of that, if you don't mind.

Thanks guys, your input is proving most useful (eyestrain appreciated Marushi) and I'll be doing another couple of workups to post in the next couple of days (hat-tips will be included )

Some chapters use camo, that's why GW thought up the "For The Colours" special rule.

Nice colour scheme, Marushi. i agree something like that would be cool and fit Reaper6's fluff. Yay for camo marines!

Reaper6, I also agree with other posters that your original scheme is just too similar to Space Wolves - doesn't seem right to me UNLESS you want an SW successor chapter. (I'm not sure why you don't want to do actual SW - just to be different?)

Hmm, can anyone who's seen the new codex confirm whether there are now any official SW successor chapters?

Salted Diamond : Go with the urge ! I've been painting so long that this concept chapter is a breath of fresh air

Clang wrote:I'm not sure why you don't want to do actual SW - just to be different?

OK, ya got me, I just want to be an awkward old git ! That plus the fact that I wanted to blend an successor with the Wolves fighting style, just to see if I could mix two different backgrounds and get away with it. As for doing a Wolves successor, I did consider it, but decided to try a chapter that followed the teachings and honoured Russ but without a genetic link. I'm having fun working out a valid explanation of why they'd deviate from Guilliman's codex in favour of Russ's organisation (Might even post it in fiction if I can work out the kinks)
