Alright.... so... I changed my mind on the silver...
It works wicked on the Dread.

For the 'snow' basing, I think the light dusting would work effectively.
Like someone else here said (i think) have a tundra=like base, flecks of snow here and there, sort of a spring thaw deal.

Now do you freehand the chapter marking or is it a decal? Also, did you make it up yourself or re-purpose if from somewhere?

Sorry, I had to chuckle, I could almost imagine the tone of voice there. The silver does kind of grow on you, but I agree that the Dread carries it much better than the Terminators. Probably something to do with the larger areas catching the light better I expect.

Like I said, that's probably the way I'll go if I add snow (Starting to like the idea, so it might yet happen)

Ramos Asura wrote:Now do you freehand the chapter marking or is it a decal? Also, did you make it up yourself or re-purpose if from somewhere?

It's a custom decal. I downloaded the White Panthers decals from Bolter and Chainsword then changed the colour from white to dark grey. Unfortunately I only have the decal paper that dries white, so I have to fill in some areas by hand.

Another quick update, WIP shots of the first Tactical Combat Squad for the Ice Panthers.

Just evening out the white, details like the Purity Seals text, highlights and bases to finish.

Sorry for the shoddy pics, cellphone camera again, and taken in a hurry coz I've got to head out.

The Sergeant. I was trying to get a blue tint to the face shading, but I'm not sure if it worked.

Fuzzy shot of the back to show the helmet (albeit rather badly )

Grunt reloading ( I'll be dropping a spent clip onto the base)

A pair from the AoBR box to make up the numbers.

Finally, the obligatory Group Shot ! (including the first marine worked up in these colours)

I'll take better pics when they're finished, but I thought I'd throw these in for now.

Oh, quick question for the "Snow Basing Lobbyists Club":
If I give in and dust these suckers with a little snow, what percentage of base coverage would you suggest ? Remember, I'm thinking edge of the Tundra, so I'd set a maximum of 20%, scattered randomly. Thoughts ?

Looks pretty, except those moldlines you should track down.

Like the paint-scheme. Would add a color line between shoulderpads and body armor ( black or dark blue ? ), the marines need this more than your black lines between white/blue. Maybe paint the shoulderpads 'inner' rim not ice blue but either dark blue, black or white?

Didn't notice the mold lines until after I posted the pics, but don't worry, their days are numbered.

Interesting suggestion about the colour line, I'll have to incorporate it, thanks

Is that a Dry Brush of White on the Dreadnaught, it looks like there is some white on the metallic areas, in which case I like the idea, it makes me think of frost.

I think the weathering on the troops should be that of frost. I think that would look kick ass, personally, it is something I have yet to see. It would give the feel of a very cold home-world and the feel that they have been out there for a while to accumulate frost on their armour.

But very nice, I think it looks amazing, I wish they still had Tinz Bitz for citadel paints it was great for head warp coloring on meltas and flamers.

That was just where the light caught the Mithril Silver highlighting on the metal.

I did think about a frost effect on the armour, but I thought it would come out looking too "chalky".

Oh, for the "Snow Basing Lobbyists Club", I've looked at the various snow effects and flocks, and none of them give the kind of effect I'm looking for, so I'm experimenting with a method yakface suggested in another thread, combined with my current basing style. I'll have a test pic to post later today

As promised, as test base for a contaminated snow effect (remember, my fluff has references to naturally sintered Cobalt(II) Aluminate contamination, hence the blue / blue-grey in the colours)

PVA glued fine sand over a base prepared to my normal result, basecoated with Ice Blue then drybrushed with Skull White. (followed yakface's example in another thread)

Nice chemical warfare base.

Like the outcome. Is it to be always a 50/50 mix like the example or a range of full "snow" to full "earth/stone" bases?

I'm planning to do a variety of coverages, from some with just a hint of snow to some with about 90% snow. Most will feature patches of different sizes.

To be totally honest with you Reaper6, after seeing all the actual model paint schemes and dreadnaught coloring it makes me want to make a Ice Panthers Army now lol

I think they look Bad Ass Seriously, and when you actually start to put "Detail" and "Shading" into them they will look even better.

Sounds good to me Ice Panthers on both sides of the Atlantic can only be a good thing, and besides, you've had as much to do with this project as I have, so it's only fair.

HAHAHA I may have contributed to the Color Scheme but I will give it all up to you for pulling things together and doing all the Physical Labor with the assembly and the painting. On top of sifting out all the ideas and suggestions. Yet, I am proud to say I was and still am apart of this awesome thread.

By the way the Tac squad, I have finally had a chance to look at them, they look Amazing ^__^

O H I am in the Webway...

Looks pretty good, but it looks like it could use a good blue wash imo. The colors are a bit to strong, like not shaded-like so maybe SOME kinda wash might help it.

Just a quick "word" for now, !

The next unit will be ready soon (been a little busy IRL recently), but I've finally got the first part of the fluff up for review in the Dakka Fiction forum :

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/262011.page#1058805

It's an overview of the Homeworld/system to set the scene, so to speak.

Comments and feedback are welcome, in fact I positively encourage it, (after all that's what helped get the visuals done).

I love the Colors. I have started a Chapter Called the Storm Crusaders. I think i should ask a certain question... Ah Yes thats it, My Chapter Has 5,000 Marines in total. And My Chapter Has Dark Green Armor and with black shoulder pads. Is that a good color scheme after a few battles I started thinking about different color schemes but they sound kind of bad. Any suggestions?

Ok, sorry this has taken so long, real life getting in the way.

Finally finished the test squad for the Zein/Reaper pattern, which I'm using for the second Space Marine Chapter this blog has spawned.
Still a few bits & peices to do, highlights etc, but good enough to post for now (I hope), and yes I'm still keeping the "contaminated snow bases" theme for this army as well as the Panthers.

So, for your consideration, The Ice Wolves :

Wolf Guard Pack Leader:

Grey Hunters:

Pack Shot:

The fluff has been roughed out to allow the Ice Wolves to use the Space Wolves Codex, for which I also invite feedback :

Hey, I've just read this start-finish and I LOVE the colour scheme on the infantry, I think it looks great! also love the fluff for the armies, although the chapter did seem to grow pretty damn quickly! I'd keep it short in ye ol' Space Marine stuff such as Dreads, Land raiders and termies IMHO to show the chapters youth...

Are you planning on doing something like 'Panther Riders' or the like using the Thunderwolf army section?

However tbh I dislike the wolf guard leader, I mean Russ was their teacher, not their stylist! and he does contrast massively to the rest of the squad, I think space marine sergeant appearance (lost the back-pack and wolf pelts etc.) but keep like a Space Wolfie beard and equipment to show Ultramarines roots/ancestry but Space Wolf tactics...

Anyway just my opinion and suggestions, hope they helped, I'll be keeping an eye on this...

Just Dave : Thanks for the thoughts on Armour and Dreads, I must admit I hadn't thought of that but it makes a whole lot of sense, so I'll have to work it into the fluff (although, to be fair, they are Fourth Founding Chapters, so not that young really).

At the moment I've deviated from my original plan in that the Panthers are currently a Codex Chapter, and their Wolf counterpart are a SW Codex mob, so the use of pelts and such is in the character I'm establishing for the Wolves (to keep them as close to SW as possible).

However, I'm planning a Chapter as a descendant of the combined Astartes Telariss, which WILL encompass the original plan of Ultra/Codex successors following the teachings of Russ. This thread gave me enough ideas to split the original concept and give it a more defined history with separate Chapters so I could combine the results much more fluidly (If that makes sense)

In that light, the current Wolf Guard is in character with my revised plan, and the Chapter that the Panthers and Wolves will spawn will see a much reduced presence of wolf-ish totems (As well as making use of the rapid expansion potential that Telariss gave the original Task Force ( I've even got a fluff concept for one of the Chapters to divide yet again, but I don't want to spoil the surprise )).

As for "Panther Riders", that is something I'm planning for the third Chapter (if I can find a good enough Panther model to use) so I'm hoping to make it happen.

Thanks again for your input, it's stuff like that which keeps me on my toes and helps me get creative. Anything else you think of, feel free to throw it at me and I'll see what I can do with it

DC : Thanks, dude. Simple and to the point. I Can't do much with it, but all praise is welcomed
