The two Realm of Battle boards the FLGS got when they first came out are still sitting in the store. One of them is technically still on reserve I think, but the guy's never gotten around to actually paying for it. With the holiday season coming up, the store's putting them on a big discount. I heard they were going to be letting them go for something like $150-175 each. At the time these were first coming out, I remember thinking that that kind of price tag would make one a good investment. All this time later, all the derision of the product makes me wonder if I even want one anymore however, even though most of those complaints are from the ridiculously high price tag. What are all your thoughts? Do you want one of these tables at all or what price are you willing to pay for one?

If I wasn't planning on building my own themed table from the ground up for my Guard army...

I'd probably already have a ROB. The few I've actually seen made me think that, while sorta pricy, it'd be worth it just for the convenience.

I wouldn't.

The Realm of Lack of Imagination limits what you can do in a game because it is a moulded board. Those hills will always be those hills, and those skull pits will always be those skull pits.

I'd rather a completely flat surface that I can put my own terrain on rather than a surface with the terrain already there.

QFT - That said, I would probably pick one up for that price, as It would be a step up from my 'Realm of the Ugly TableCloth'!

I've got a GW green mat. Not the one on the paper backing, but the proper felt and flocked green mat. It's 6X4. The right green colour, completely flat and if you spill something on it you can put that thing in the washing machine.

It's a tiny fraction of the cost, and I get to pick what terrain goes on it.

Seen the battlemat, looked like a great product.

My problem is Id like to base my table in dark grey/rubble as I predominantly play cityfight (and all my bases are done that way).

Hmm...

$150 USD.

Asking more, is IMHO, swindling on GW's part.

I may eventually buy one, but that's highly unlikely.

And there are places that make mats for that as well, either pre-printed ones, or ones you can paint/flock/whatever yourself. Even making your own grey/rubble board isn't as expensive as the ROB. Friend of mine has an 8X6 table that splits in two, and is has very course sand all over it, sprayed black and drybrushed grey. Looks great, is completely flat for your own terrain, was cheap to do, and the only downside is that it's heavy!!!.

For $50 I might actually buy one. They make a good rigid table and pack down easily, which makes them very useful for traveling.

The problem is all the piles of skulls make them look simply ridiculous and the current cost is just totally absurd. It's really a product for people with more money than sense.

You can't fix stupid.

$175 and no more. Which is funnily enough what GW originally priced the thing, but then they got greedy.

I wouldn't buy one now anyway because, like it was said, the price turned me off at first and I've ended up disliking the board more and more since, for reasons that HBMC listed. Of course the board I'm working on right now also has hills built into some of the sections, I think I have enough extra sections left over that I can play on either a flat surface, a surface with hills on one side, or hills on both sides plus whatever terrain I make to go on it.

$150.

Maybe $200 with flatter hills and no ridiculous skull pits.

I was ready to buy it for $200 when it first was solicited. After the multiple price increases before its release date caused me to not order one.

I guess over $200 was my breaking point.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Some guy did a nice tutorial about how to cover up the skull pits. I'm sure it was featured on Dakka somewhere. Does anyone remember?

If you can get hold of a set cheap, it solves the skull problem.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Nothing. It is inferior to anything I could make for a quarter of the cost.

Well i got a new job recently with a shiny wage which ate all my spare time so i've just cracked and bought one plus the two extenders, and despite the price tag i'm genuinely impressed with it, far sturdier and easier to store than anything i could make in the meagre excuse for free time i have left after work and the other half

I was able to get my wife to agree to 200 and could probably have even gone to 225 - they just pushed it right out of my price point. I have been tempted to get 6 of the flat boards though.

I think it's a good buy if you don't know about Zuzzy mats and other competing systems, and you don't have the skills or time to make your own modular boards.

$150-$175, if there were other squares available.

Modular molded plastic sounded exactly like what I was looking for, but its current price, and lack of any follow on squares (due to lack of sales), and no sale to me.

This would have been awesome with trench, river, city etc tiles available for say, $25 each.

I'd buy a mat, really. Maybe that Sabol product (even with that ad printing on the edge) or something similar. Not the basic green, though. AFAIK, the GW grass mat isn't a bad product, machine washability is a boon.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

I would happily pay $150 for a RoB. What would be even better is if you could buy any of the tiles seperately for $25.

That seems like a fair price to me.
