WW2 technology, particularly tanks and vehicles, has long been a passion of mine. I played FoW until the crowd dried up at my LGS and since then I've been itching to play with a vehicle based army again. The PanzerLehrDivision was one of my favorite armies to play in FoW so I wanted to carry it over into 40k, whic has always been my primary game. Given that much of the lore and icons of the 40k universe are based upon historical figures I thought that much of the conversions would be pretty simple. While none of my vehicles look extremely similar to German WW2 vehicles, the similarity is there, which is good enough for me. The vehicles are all converted to look something like a German WW2 tank:
Command Chimera (Panzer IV)
WIP Medusa (Wespe)
Vendetta (in Luftwaffe paint scheme)
More to come.
Also, I posted this on another board frequented by gamers in my region. A debate over the responsibility of using a force associated with the German Army of WW2 arose that became quite ugly. I don't want to repeat that here, so please keep comments about the conversions or paint job. Thank you!

Like the color scheme of you chimera. Kross looks a little misplaced when its on the side of the hull insted of the turret. Maybe its because its to little for the side of the hull or its placement.
I know your going with the ww2 theme but have you tried painting on the modern german cross on some tank instead of the ww2?
Its almost identicall to the old on exept its a little rounded at the edges. http://www.heliport.de/fileadmin/templates/_img/galerie/airday-2006/ch53_airday06_26.jpg
I think it would look better, and to offset the "boxynes" of the IG tanks.

Vendetta is fine, but the chimera needs either a bigger army symbol ( cross ) or a different one , maybe an imperial eagle for 40k-ness?
Like the paint job, waiting for pics to come.

With the Crosses you might just want to do just the white parts of the crosses... that was later on in the war( due to the shortage of paint but It will give it the subdude (sp) look of Lehr and you need to add foilage( heavy camo on them).. But its a great theme and paint job on all of them .You could make the medusa, into baby StuG If you know what i mean...
Are you going to have any Leman Russ's in the army?? are those going too be Tigers?? or TigersII, or Panthers??

Since these pics were taken I've switched to water slide decals from WW2 models kits. They're slightly larger and look much better than my shaky freehand attempts. Surprisingly enough I had a difficult time finding the standard cross. I like the idea to update the cross to the current form and if I can find them I may do just that.

So would people get up set if they did as japanese WW2 theme army?? I mean the Japanese were just as nasty as the germans were, to other asians and worst to POW... I mean its Just a theme army.....
I can Say the Same for a Russian theme Army too, they were horrible too the germans and too the jews too, but since they help win the war with the americans, that part of history was swept under the door...
Winner write the history of the world while the looser are just victoms... im not pro Nazi or Commie but its true .
Plus hes not doing a SS unit hes doing a panzer lehr Unit which is basicly the newest equipment the germans had at the time . Its kinda like the the blue angels of there time ( there a show unit of combat veterns on new equipment coming out.)

he (or anyone) can pick whatever theme to do that they want. but i also have freedom to to think it's not cool. he's clearly a talented modeler/painter. i just don't like the german theme.

If it clears up confusion I'd have no qualms with replacing the straight, WW2 era cross with the more modern curved cross. Simply put, my idea was to bring an army from FoW, a game that I enjoyed but has since died in my area, to 40k, a game that I have many opportunities to play.
Again, please keep any comments about issues other than the conversions or paint scheme outside of this post. If you'd like to discuss these issues, I ask that you do so outside of this thread. I ask this not because I'm afraid of, or want to avoid, such a discussion but because it can quickly overwhelm the thread, leaving it a muddled mess.

Please don't spam the forum with +1 type posts. They will get deleted and your post count goes down again.
We've had a couple of threads from people making armies with a strong Nazi theme, usually disguised by altering the swastika to a different shape or some such ruse, but using a lot of Nazi iconography such as red, black and white, and Nazi style propaganda posters.
The difference in this case is that the army is a non-Nazi, WW2 German themed army. This is in some sense non-historic, since the Luftwaffe always had the swastika on the tailplane, which the Valkyrie here doesn't.
I personally don't find this army theme objectionable like I did the Nazi themed armies. Maybe it is because there is no pretence about the theme, and especially due to the absence of Nazi or faux-Nazi regalia.
For what it's worth, the modern German army still uses the black cross as its main symbol and no-one finds that objectionable. It is a Prussian/German symbol centuries old, and was used by the Teutonic Knights.

Awesome painting. I have always thought a WW2 'Panzer' themed army would be awesome for 40k. It's just an fact that the Germans had the coolest uniforms and gear (and the Italians probably had the goofiest). I am looking forward to seeing how this comes out.
Personally I would have liked to see half track Chimeras but I just loved the SdKfz.

I did a WW2 German themed army once and no one complained. 11th panzer for a large Sparhead game Kursk 43.
Almost anyone who has done some historic gaming or has studied WW2 (watching history channel does not count) will not have a problem with your paint scheme. Anyone who does likely falls into any number of unsavory catagories ie: ignorant, uptight, stoopid.
Its almost like saying WW2 modeling is ok as long as you only do allied models. Hell I wanted to do Mordians in all black. Steel Legion got in the way and after that in need to paint my Praetorians.
Just my 2 Drachma's worth.

this isn't historic gaming Ted. and i don't fall into you listed categories.
we were asked to give an opinion on his "conversions or paint scheme". he's a wonderful painter. i like the colors and the conversion on his Bassy is aces. i just don't like the German scheme. please don't get me wrong. it's my opinion. he doesn't have to stop because of me. and i'm not calling him a four lettered "N" word for doing it. i don't like mixing my futuristic game with historic armies. if i wanted to play historic games, i'd play FOW.

It looks good, although I'd go with Imperializing the German WWII iconography - it's out of place when 40k is full of neo-fascist alternatives.
I particularly like what you've done with the Chimera. Where did you get the extra armour on the track units?

Well painted, especially the glass on the view-port and spotlight. Did you use an airbrush for the camo? It's very smooth.
As for the trolling that's gone on here, I must apologise. It's obvious that you've chosen this theme out of nostaligia for FoW and a passion for history; good on you for keeping it up despite the criticism some would level on you. I only hope a few ignorant comments won't discourage you from staying here at Dakka.

I appreciate the comments of those who may disagree with the theme of my army. I may not agree with them, but I certainly respect that AlarmingRick and others are entitled to their opinions.
Now to answer some of the questions/comments. I thought about making the Chimeras half-tracks. I even considered using strait 1:35 or 1:42 (i think that's the scale) scale WW2 models, but the amount of conversion work would have been overwhelming, especially since I work full-time, am a part-time college student and a Volunteer FF/EMT. I'm all for subtle/simple conversions that have a profound effect. In terms of using WW2 models, the proportions never looked quite right, no matter what scale I looked at. Plus I wanted to limit confusion for my opponent and didn't want to constantly be answering questions like "What does that King Tiger represent again?".
The camo pattern is indeed done with an airbrush.
The extra armor is thick plasticard cut after I studied some pictures of the shurzen commonly found on the side of the Panzer IV H.
Here are a few additional WIP shots I snapped tonight. Sorry for the poor lighting. I'll snap better pics once they're finished.
I'm going to have to do something about that annoying line on the Medusa barrel.

@OP: For an alternative take on how to incorporate WW2 design themes, you might want to check out my IG blog (clik the link in my sig). Personally, I'm sidestepping away from emulating any of the historical Nazi-era forces in paint scheme or direct detailing. I'm only keeping the design ethos and Eisenkruze.
Your Command Chimera isn't bad, but the lasguns are still silly. Worse, your side skirts prevent their use. Remove the skirts, and it'll be better.
The skirts look good and make sense on the Hellhound, due to it having higher side AV.

Would keep the side-skirts.
