Hello Dakka!

I finally got a chance to put the Kans together! , so here we goooo!

After building the Deff Dread, I noticed a lot of similar and duplicate parts. It'll keep the models looking cohesive, for sure. The main body of the Kan is 6 pieces; the front plate (you get 3 unique fronts), two side pieces each with arm sockets and round nubs for the legs to go on, a rear piece, an rounded undercarriage piece, and the top plate (3 different ones again). Pretty simple to slot them all together; undercarriage slots into the front plate, then the sides, then the back, then the top. The power plants are the same two-piece engine-block looking bits from the Dread, one to each Kan.

Here's shots of the bitz, assembled and cleaned. First, the legs. I was losing it trying to find all the pieces to make three sets of the straight piston legs of old, until I checked the pic on the GW site and saw that only one Kan has the old-school legs, the other two have new-style legs with articulated knees.

Here's the Shootin' and Slashin' bitz:

The Grotzooka is the only two-part gun arm, the upper part with the ball-end slots into the back of the gun assembly so you can have the main gun straight up and down on the fininshed model, since it's got the open-topped "ammo" hopper on it.

And here's the extra bitz, shoulder pads, front detail bitz, etc.

On to the main assembly. First, I put all of them on legs and on their bases. I was under the initial impression that the legs would be fully articulated at the hips, since it's a ball-socket joint. That is not the case; the joint fits together fully, and the only play you get is to swing the legs forward or backward. The ball ends on the body are also angled backward, so you can only get a bit of motion before the legs start looking wonky. The feet are fully articulated and reminded me of XV8 Crisis Suit feet, though I have no fear of the ankles breaking on these things! At this point I realized that, standing amongst such newfangled Kans as ones with articulated legs, the old-model straight-piston leg Kan looked a little out-of-place. I originally had him posed standing up straight, but I pried him apart again and put him in a walking pose to try and eke a little more motion out.

Finally the arms and the rest of the bitz went on. Like the Dread, all the CC arms are fully articulated at the shoulders and wrists, all the gunz except the Grotzooka are all articulated only at the shoulder. The gun arms are molded with articulation, so they have elbows even though they can't be moved. Here's the thing: It's a pretty radical departure from the standard Kan with the one swinging killy-Klaw arm, and the Shootin' bit basically bolted on the other side. I had all the Deff Dread bits out while I was building these, and we can all rest easy that you can migrate gunz from the Dread to the Kanz, and the gun assembly from the Dread, when used on a Kan, looks a lot more like the classic model. Also, I got the feeling that I was supposed to match the shoulderpads up, which struck me as arbitrarily symmetrical and decidedly un-Orky, so I intentionally mis-matched them as much as possible.

On the subject of weapon mounts, I would say that between a pair of Deff Dreads and a couple boxes of Kans, you should have enough rokkits, big shootas, mega blastas, and scorchas to arm each 3-Kan squadron the same, using any of the above options. Though If you want triple Grotzooka you'll need to convert or get three boxes of Kans. I agonized for a minute or two over how to arm them; I was tempted to go 3x Big Shoota, or possibly 1x Rokkit and 2x Kustom Mega-blasta, but then I remembered that this is a post to preview the new models, not my personal Ork blog, so I went with Grotzooka, Big Shoota, and Rokkit, all from the Kan kit. I'm going to get at least two more boxes of Kans and another Dread or two when they come out anyway, so it's not like I won't be able to build my evil Kan army of doom then!

And here's some size comparison shots, first next to a Big Mek:

Then next to the Deff Dread:

One thing to note with this kit is that there really aren't any extra gubbinz. Everything on the frames is going to end up on the model with the exception of two little detail bitz and whichever gun and stabby bit you don't use. I get it; there's a lot to these models and there are three of them in a $45 box, so I wasn't expecting a treasure trove of extras, but a few spare spikes or glyph plates would have been nice.

Overall, I'm happy with the kit, though I have to say I'm not as elated as I was with the Deff Dread. Maybe it's just that these were three little packages of 'more of the same' after building the Dread, or maybe the stylistic departure from the classic 'garbage can on legs' is bugging me somehow. I'm pretty sure it's the latter of those two. No, I'm totally sure of it. I am going to build my next three Kans using the Deff Dread gun arms for comparison, to see if that makes me feel better. Don't take me wrong; I'm totally stoked to build a full-blown KanWall, and the models were a blast to build and pose, in addition to being easy, which counts for quite a lot given how bad the metal models could be during assembly. It's just that my forward-thinking, bright-and-sunny-future-of-cheap-and-easy-and-awesome-looking-Killa-Kan-plastic-kits side is tugging gently at the elbow of my purist side, who is moving ahead with just the tiniest smidge of reluctance.

Anyway, thanks for reading!

Oh wow those look excellent. I remember you were talking about the bottom jaw of one of the deff dread bitz, do you htink the bottom fangs from the killa kans box would fit with the deff dread?

Nothing currently, got out of the hobby, maybe getting back in?

Cheers once again for the sprue and assembly pics and preview. All of us Ork players (and non-Ork players) are excited by these new plastic kits (least most of us are). Good to see the deff dread and killa kan weapons are interchangeable.

It might... You'd just need to cut off the mounting posts from the back of the Kan tusked jaw and shape it to the front of the Deff Dread a bit...

Genius. This is why I love this forum; I might never have thought of that, now I'll be trying it on my next build!

Thanks for the images.

Myself I miss the old look as well. I think when I'll get mine I'll try to assemble them as much old-schooly as possible...

The hatches on top... do they open or are they molded to the top as a single piece?

^ Like the Deff Dread, the hatches are molded onto the top plate, they have no articulation and would need some time with a hot-knife to come open.

Honestly, I'm fine with it. After building all of the models, I'm happy for one less piece to worry about.

Great looking models.

I do know how you feel about that the kans look a little bit 'un-orky' Like.

Show us more of the deff dread soon.

Ta for the review - I'm assembling my FLGS's kans this weekend. I have the sprues and they do look great - particularly good that GW have apparently designed the kan and dredd kits to be compatible, as I'll eventually be making a '2 dredds and 9 kans' army and want as much bits choice as possible to make them all look individual.

No, I mean an Ork. Why would a gretchin need to poke his head out of the top in order to see?

Why would an Ork need to stick his head out the top of a Deff Dread in order to see? There's plenty of room in one of those.

I just got done assembling the Kanz last night and they looks awesome. I should have some painted pics up this weekend.

Future tip the arms are perfect for magnetizing. All the arms from all have the same ball socket so you could very easily be able to swap out what ever arms you wanted.

They look awesome! I can't wait till they come out!

I am a bit annoyed about the fact there's only one grotzooka but the bazooka bit looks quite similar to a SM missile launcher so i'm sure i'll figure something out. Does a grotzooka come with the dread?

It's a little disappointing that they're not more customisable, but realistically, how many people are going to build more than 3 of them...

The brilliant little models. It would seem that after a decade of people building their own out of whatever they had on hand, GW have pulled out all the stops to make slightly more interesting Kan models. Certainly lifts the bar a little for the scratch-builders...

Ummm... from the sprues one can see the large weapon is grotzooka (it uses scrap instead of ammo, exactly as described in codex), and there is no mega blasta indeed :(
