did I just waste 600 dollars? I bought a ton of necrons and then came to this board and all Im really hearing is that they suck against most armies, and I should just give up if I face IG. Did I really waste my money? Are crons that bad?

Make the call. Are necrons worth bothering with?

Do YOU think this is a competitive/cheese list, or a casual list?

Necron codex are abit out dated , but they arnt weak.

And whether you wasted $600 or not should be factored in by the army content. Because you can sell it after all right?

If you are a WAAC OMFG TOURNAMENTS!!!!!!!!! Trend Gamer who must have the shiniest new thing, then yes, you just wasted a bucketload of cash.

If you are someone who wants to play for general enjoyment, likes the fluff behind Necrons and don't mind using a slightly underpowered army, then no, you didn't. Playing a "poor" army is fun because when you do win, it's all the sweeter. In any case, at least you won't be waiting 10+ years for an Update for them, unlike some people have for their Dark Eldar and Space Wolves (grumbles about how I played Dark Eldar and Space Wolves for the last 10 years). Necrons will get a new codex in 2 years or so.

A) YMDC is for rules questions, so I'm going to move the thread.
B) As noted, Necrons perform a bit under par in a pure-competition environment, but if you're playing against friends who use less-than-perfectly honed lists, you should do fine.
C) Even in a really competitive format, you can still do well using Monoliths, a C'Tan, Immortals, and a bit of the other stuff (Destroyers and Scarabs are decent). You need to be careful with your Warriors, and not spend too many points on them/take too many of them. Putting them in Reserve, using them to grab objectives and stay alive, and letting your killy stuff (above) do most of the heavy lifting during the game is often a good approach.

I would say if you like the Necrons, and enjoy fighting as a bunch of Arnold like terminators, then yes they are worth playing with. Don't get too caught up in what "everybody" says is good. Necrons can be loads of fun to play. They can also be a very strong army.

Limey says it all right there. EVERYONE sucks when they first start. It doesn't matter if you have the latest codex or an old one like the Necrons. If you like them and stick with it - you will start to win. I.E. You see alot of people say how bad Tau are, but I have my best win record with them.

Well considering you spent $600 on plastic toy soldiers what do you think? Why did you buy them in the first place? How come you bought what you bought?

As long as you enjoy it and have fun, nobody can tell you over spent. Look at a someone who dosn't know GW or care for it, they will say yes you spent $600 on plastic toy soldiers, even spending a ONE dollar would be over spending. So as long as you enjoy what you bought, it is worth it.

As Gwar has said, unless you are out to win everygame, then you made a good purchase.

BTW what did you buy?

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

More or less. Necrons are rather boring and outdated.

But if they're what you really, really wanted, then no, not really.

Spending that much money without doing research on the product you're buying is always going to end badly. Lesson learned I guess.

I actually was going to start necrons a few years ago after I sold my CSM army but I didn't like the limited amount of different models and basically even fewer models that are actually competitive to use.

There is some good news in all of this. Necrons are slated to get a redone codex soon(sometime early next year or late this one if things really go well). So by the time you get done modelling/painting everything and honing your list you should have some new rules to make your army even better.

In the embrace of the great Nurgle, I am no longer afraid, for with His pestilential favour I have become that which I once most feared: Death.

Nothing wrong with buying the necrons, seeing that they will probably get updated soon, unless they are the new Dark Eldars =p

I won't bother.

Well, I'm going to be honest. They're incredibly boring to play as and against, and they can't perform for crap. Not to mention that they just look so... boring...

Yeah, playing outdated armies is interesting and presents a nice challenge. I am going to start Necrons after I get my Dwarfs up and running. However, my first army is Dark Angels. Everyone tells me to run something different, yet I don't. As people have said, unless you need to win, play wht you want.

I have never lost a game with my necrons in 4th or 5th edition, and we have good competition around these here parts.

They do not play like any other army though, and there's a certain finesse in deploying and using your troops that's kinda unlike any other army that I play.

My last necron victory was over a Biel-Tan army where the strength of necron assaults all but ensured the win. Iggy, if you want any advice on playing or anything, toss me a PM, I'll do what I can to help.

If you like the look and style of necrons then no. When they are updated you'll have a force ready for them. If your only interested in having an unstoppable army then maybe. Though when used right necrons can hold their own very well and remind people why they are feared.

Luckily, the models are pretty nice still. That's one thing a few waiting armies cannot say.

The army is a bit under the power curve of 5th edition books, but should be updated within a year. I'm assuming without a major overhaul of the miniatures - so that means your investment was sound and should hold up.

Anyway, a while back I went on eBay (plus a few online stores) and bought 8000 points worth of Necrons.

I don't regret it, whatever their rules. They're not 'boring'. And they'll get a new Codex sooner rather than later.

Necrons are a fantastic army, steel warriors inexorably marching towards you, each one capable of returning to the battle and of causing glancing damage with their front line weapons. I think their only down side is the One choice for troops. The boring thing about them I reckon is the lack of attention. Necrons now are as Boring as the first edition of Tau, before they updated it. (Thank the Japanese sales for that marketing choice.) But there has to be something said about dropping three Monoliths o=in your opponents deployment zone before unleashing an army of just Warriors and two lords with ress orbs.

Use Nightbringer for "Bring out you Avatar" fun.

This isnt a dig by the way but I am genuinely curious to know how many people on this thread have a Necron army?

Deepstriking Monoliths make IG sad?

It all comes down to what you want in the end. Like Gwar said only the WAAC guys care about stuff like that, them and their warehouses of Melta weapons. Because vehicles are everywhere in every game

I don't think you really need to worry about mech lists ruining your day. I've never actually seen a mech army in real life, ever.

600 bucks in one go for models is a bit much espeically if their codex is out dated.
I'd just try them out for a while..unpainted. If you end up not liking them there is always ebay....

Cron's are awesome fluffwise, and appearance wise, but I've shelved mine for the moment.

They were my first army, and are just on hold till we got a new codex.

I wouldn't say it's a wasted investment, just give it a year, and they will probably be dominating the scene with their new codex

EDIT: horrible spelling.

Real question, will you have fun with them? It doesn't matter if someone says you can't win, or do this, if you find a way all the more luck to you. But in the end the only person to say wether they enjoyed it or not is you. Also its never a waste, even though that is a lot of money, you can always find ways of making it back, this game is like trading stocks or bananas someone is always going to want one.

Wot?

They're still one of the top tier armies, easily. Your friends are likely afraid of having to fight them.
