What will you do come 8th Edition?
Just buy it, not that big of a deal.
I just go and read it at my GW/FLGS and write down/memorize the changes.
Stop playing until the starter set comes out (lolwut)

As 8th Edition has finally been confirmed on the definite, I've been dreading the prospect of shelling out $50-55 for a tome of which the majority I will not use. You say, just buy the starter set one, but the starter set is usually not out 'till several months later.

So, do you just go to your GW and write down/memorize the new rules, or do you shell out the $50. I was thinking to myself I'll just write it down, but $50 every 4 years or so really isn't that bad, unless your life is full of bills D:

So how about you?

I voted for option 2. I'm a cheap bastard.

Are you going to use the models from the box set? I would wait if you were, if not go ahead and buy it. I am still debating on BfSP just for the goblins. I am sure I will be able to get it pretty cheap fairly soon.

Listen...eBay, Bartertown, and likely the trading Forum here will have the mini-rulebook in the same #'s as the last starterbox. I got mine (with templates and dice) for $10 USD shipped.

No worries...

I voted just buy the book... I don't think I'll be able to wait for the starter set, since I'm wanting to go to a fantasy tournament or two in the summer.

Ill probly just by the book if the rules have changed a lot.

If not me and my buddies will all pitch in 10-15 bucks, buy it, and xerox the new stuff.

Warhammer is my hobby. I enjoy it and I buy the necessary stuff, including the rules. Most of the time a really nice book, now full colour. As I also play Skaven, I will get the starter too.

It still only feels like yesterday since the 7th was released.

Am lucky in as much as the too few games are played at home. I will be able to get by until I can see if i can get one cheap from the starter on ebay.

The downside is that I am wanting to try and start going to the GW for a bit of FB.

Why is the book so expensive- apart from the fact that it's GW

It's hard cover and big. I supose that's where they got the value from, plus all the colour pages in it as well.

Same here. I like hardcover books.

Nicer to read in bed at night.

My bad- for some reason was thinking it was £50 hardback/ £35 softback

still a lot of pennies for me but a more understandable price comparitave to art/architecture books. Though if I wanna spend that sort of cash on a book, the latter wins

Another reason i think all their stuff, in general, is so expensive is....

you buy it ONCE. once you have your models you can play as much as you want without GW making another dime. They have to make everything expensive enough to where people will still buy it, and they can turn a profit.

I'm definatly going to be buying the new rulebook when it comes out. Aside from the rumored changes, which are supposed to be plentiful, I like having the extra fluff to read. It can be a source of inspiration for painting, conversions and creating your own senarios. Besides, with several months notice it shouldn't be hard to set aside some money for it.

In that case, I'll give you $10 for the mini-book!

I'm pretty stingy and still kind of getting things together as far as my army is concerned. I'll probably just learn 8th edition with everyone else and pick up a mini-book when they show up in a couple of months. I know people will be buying multiples of whatever set comes out so books will be aplenty.

I think its funny what just happened.

I posted the pathetic outcome of this thread, and everyone flocked to this thread to post.

Loltastic.

Hm, yeah, I probably will just buy the hardcover, but I just read on the rumor thread it will be 500-550 pages long...wtf?

The large rule books that GW makes are an absolute waste of money and a complete rip off. Not only is the OP 100% in saying that most of the book is useless, but for $60 (I think the new will be more expensive), you get a book that is a major pain to carry to games, use during games, and on top of all of that, will promptly fall apart.

The boxed sets are infinitely better as you get a whole lot more for your money. Even if you don't use the minis, you can trade them for minis you do use, sell, them, use them as casualties or in scenery, etc...

have to agree Kasrkin
It is personal preference that I don't mind the little rule books. May be wrong, but from what I have seen there ain't a lot more info in the big one apart from size and pretty piccies. I can live without them.

I think i will end up getting the big one and a little one.

I have started working on a skaven army so i will want the box set, and ill trade or sell off the high elves.

Then i will grab the big rule book for the pictures and extra fluff. This is really the only hobby i spend money on except golf, so i dont mind shelling out a few extra bucks.

However about it being bulky and hard to carry, I just bought a laptop cast and keep my 3 army books and my BRB in there and its not that bad. Having the army book, the BRB + dice and everything can be, but we have extra space built into our gaming tables to accommodate this.

I am up in the air. I never did get the 7th ed one. Now I am thinking about picking up the battle for skull pass. Then I can still have 7th ed rules just in case, plus I already play dwarfs and have been thinking about starting a small all goblin army (I would only add fanatics and hoppers until the voices start talking me into buying more). As for the new one, I will wait for the starter set. IMHO it is a much better value and I could always start a HE army if the models are any good. (I only like the look of shadow warriors and white lions right now) I also have a friend that would play skaven.

Only thing with waiting for the Starter Box is that newer rumours have it being like 40K 5th: Big book in July, Box in September.

Someone at the FLGS will have one or know the rules and all my games are friendly and usually played there. Until then I found some guys that like to play Necromunda, so I will be digging out all my old gangs and getting back into what started me into this hobby in the first place.

None of the above. I'll possibly buy a spare starter rulebook if we start playing again, but anything else waits for a DoW Army Book.

If anything, I'll probably sell stuff rather than buy more.

I'll just buy the book, partially as I want to see what the hell the other two hundred odd pages are going to be.

I'll also get the box when it arrives, as someone said in another thread, by about September time my arm will be tired of lifting up that monsterous barsteward of a book and will cheer at the sight of the little one.
